5 out of 5 stars Dive Book 2 The Deep.......2007-02-26

I read Dive Book 2 The Deep by Gordon Korman. I think the most annoying this is when you're going on to the next book in a series and the author explains all the events that happened. Gordon Korman doesn't do that. He sort of starts a new chapter as if it was from book 1. This story takes places in Poseidon Saint Luc, a tiny city in the Caribbean. Kaz, Dante, Adriana, and Star found strange artifacts in their diving site. They figure out that the artifacts came from a Spanish Galleon, Nuestra Senora de las luz.

The four divers are going to stay in the Poseidon underwater self-contained habitat or PUSH. PUSH is located 65 feet beneath the surface. The four divers go on dives to look for nothing but artifacts. They find a dagger, silverware, and plates, and a bell. Adriana spends an hour scrubbing the coral off the bell to see if there's any writing. She figures out that the bell is from Toledo, a Spanish city where there is most metalwork. It doesn't seem like that much but it's worth 1.2 billion dollars.

Before the end of their stay, Dante finds a trench. He knew that artifacts would go down there. The four divers and a specialist will go on a deep water scout which looks like a giant bubble. At 700 feet down, they see danger.

I would recommend this book to people who like suspenseful mysteries. I couldn't really connect to this because this is a rare moment.

This first book was very exciting and had you at the edge at all times. This book a bit boring, and I could tell it was just filler for the end of book three. Because of that it was a disapointment to me.

Book Description

Stephen O'Meara's new and exciting observing guide spotlights an original selection of 109 deep-sky objects that will appeal to sky-watchers worldwide. His 'hidden treasures' include a wonderful assortment of galaxies, open clusters, planetary nebulae and more, all of which have been carefully chosen based on their popularity and ease of observing. None of these objects are included in either the Messier or the Caldwell catalogs, and all are visible in a 4-inch telescope under dark skies. Stunning photographs and beautiful drawings accompany detailed visual descriptions of the objects, which include their rich histories and astrophysical significance. The author's original finder charts are designed to help observers get to their targets fast and efficiently.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-09-03

O'Meara has put together another great book. Here he takes us off the beaten path somewhat in search of deep sky treasure that many observers may neglect. In addition to the NGC and IC catalogues, he also ventures into lesser known catalogues such as Melotte, Trumpler, and Collinder as well as one of his own objects. As with previous volumes in the Deep Sky Companions series, each object is given a photo, drawing, and a finder chart as well as complete historical information. In addition to observations made with his trusty Tele Vue Genesis 4" refractor, observations from other observers using larger scopes are also included. All done in a writing style that is one of the most enjoyable today. Highly recommended for the deep sky observer!

5 out of 5 stars After Messier, this is the one catalog you need!.......2007-08-07

Amateur astronomers surely agree that Messier and Caldwell catalogs missed many wonderful objects in the sky (north and south). Why not just ask a REAL deepsky observer to build a list of the missing gems? Well, that is exactly what this book offers. The 109 objects listed were observed by the author in a moderately small refractor telescope under dark skies. I have only observed a sample of objects in the entire list but do believe that the remainder are worth a try. Every object is introduced with such passion and in such an enthusiastic way that you really feel like going outside and give it a try.
5 stars!

An excellent volume/ If there is any problwem, it is that it is too extensive. It thus serves ,more as a reference than an "easy reading'.

The full horror as the mighty Central American, a ship carrying almost 600 people and a wealth of gold, sank in a "perfect hurricane" in 1857 is brilliantly re-created in the audio version of Ship of Gold. Gary Kinder's book cries out for audio interpretation due to its abundance of dramatic descriptions from that hellish night. "The hoarse screams of 500 men rose as she began a slow watery spin--the water turning faster and faster and faster until the swirling vortex sucked the men into a suffocating darkness with the once majestic steamer." Bruce Davison delivers Kinder's rich, descriptive narrative with appropriate drama and flair. It is truly a delight to hear this incredible story read out loud. The chilling testimonies of passengers and crew are also convincingly re-enacted by Davison, who assumes the voices of frightened young women, exhausted crew men, and the steadfast voice of the brave Captain Herndon as he fights to keep his ship afloat. Davison is rather soft spoken, which makes for a pleasant listening experience, especially because the tapes run for five hours.

It really is impossible not to become fully engrossed in this fascinating story of a ship's demise, and the subsequent operation to recover her treasure some 130 years later. (Running time: five hours, four cassettes) --Naomi Gesinger

Read by Bruce Davison

"The Central America was as sensational a shipwreck in its century as the Titanic was in ours."
--The Washington Post

Bestselling author Gary Kinder tells, for the first time, an extraordinary tale of history, maritime drama, heroic rescue, scientific ingenuity, and individual courage.   Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea is the riveting true account of death, danger, and discovery on the high seas in the dramatic search for America's greatest lost treasure.

In September 1857, the side-wheel streamer S.S. Central America, carrying five hundred passengers and tons of gold from the mountains of California, sank in a hurricane off the Carolina coast.  Lost in legend for more than a century, the tragic story resurfaced in 1989, when Tommy Thompson, a brilliant ocean engineer, sailed into Norfolk harbor with more than ten tons of pioneer old.  Using a combination of oceanography, computer science, and information theory to sift through historical records and penetrate the deep sea, Thompson's team had recovered the mint-state coins, antique bars, and sparkling gold dust from 8,000 feet below the surface of the sea - proving wrong everyone who said it couldn't be done and establishing mankind's first read working presence on the deep ocean floor.  It was, as Life magazine proclaimed "The greatest treasure ever found," and its dollar value has currently been estimated in the hundreds of millions.

This AudioBook is a copiously historical record of the disaster, rendered in chilling detail with diaries from the survivors and eyewitness accounts, as well as newspaper reports from the worst peacetime at-sea disaster in American history.  It is a chronicle of the technological breakthrough in which deep-sea robots were developed to perform complex work.  Ant it is an incredibly exciting adventure story of how a team of scientists and engineers, the Columbus-America Discovery Group, battled massive storms, technological challenges, and intrusive salvages on the open seas to find the lost treasure.

It is a fascinating story both of the power of the human will to succeed and of technological triumph.

4 out of 5 stars What an Adventure !.......2007-09-21

This is an appealing book on many levels. 19th century sea adventure, heroes, tradegies, great survival stories, heart stopping excitement, 20th century high tech recovery adventures, interlopers and bottom feeding lawyers and insurance companies, it's got it all. Why 4 stars rather than 5 ? I found it a tad long after they found the boat and began that part of the story. But, that is a small point. Well worth the reader's time.

3 out of 5 stars Ship of Gold is a good story with excellent details about the recovery of the gold........2007-08-28

Ship of Gold is a good story with excellent details about the recovery of the gold.
In my next recovery book I will look for more diving experience. The ROV's do not have the same adventure value as the human diving experience we have on the North Sea but then again the North Sea is maximum 40 meters deep. We don't need ROV's at these depths.
I liked the sonar specialist story and the systematical scanning of the area's with the best values in the probability matrix.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down one of the best book ever! .......2007-08-20

This is by far the best book ever. I have purchased more copies then I can count and I have given it to all of my family members and most of my friends. All of them loved it. Even my mom told it was one of the best books she had ever read. Being she reads a book every two weeks that's a pretty good compliment.

This is a short book, but it takes a long time to read. It's not that it's a hard read; it's just that it's so good you will take your time to read it. Almost like savoring a great wine.

I don't recommend many books, but this one should be on the top of your reading pile. Once you read it you will understand why and I'm willing to bet you will recommend it to all of your friends.

4 out of 5 stars Good modern day treasure hunt.......2007-07-04

I liked the way the author took the reader back and forth from the past to the present. It was interesting to see how much planning and inguenuity it took to accomplish the recovery of the gold. Once the treasure was found, I have to admit to having a mild case of 'gold fever' due to the vivid descriptions provided by G. Kinder. The only reason I didn't give it the full 5 is because of the Tommy (the technical mastermind of the recovery) praising!!!! Alright already, he certainly must walk on water, and if he doesn't, he'll surely invent a way to. Inspite of the Tommy factor, this is a good book.
Also recommended: In the Heart of the Sea

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Nonfiction.......2006-12-28

When the Central America sank in 1857 she took 21 tons of gold and more than 400 souls to the bottom of the sea, including one of my ancestors. Kinder's incredible book weaves the tale of the shipwreck together with the story of the thrilling recovery more than 130 years later.

Ship of Gold is a fantastic book from historic and scientific perspectives. If you read this book, you will gain new insights about the Gold Rush and 19th-century sea travel; better yet, you will be amazed by the technological and biological advancements which were a direct consequence of Tommy Thompson's recovery.

I read Ship of Gold to fill in the details of an old family legend. I was pleased to discover a truly amazing work of nonfiction.

Perfect book for a Dora lover. Pictures are inserted wtihin the sentences so your child can read along and particpate with you!

5 out of 5 stars 3 year old daughter loves it.......2007-03-27

My daughter and I love to read this book together. It is nice and short. My daughter is also learning to spell because of the simple and repetitive words in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Dora Book.......2006-11-30

My two daughters (ages 2 and 4) request this book be read--at least once a day (along with all the other "Ready-to-Read" books we bought for them). They especially get excited when it's time to go under the sea with Dora. I think this book is probably geared toward the preschool/beginning grade school set. It has big words and colorful pictures. The stories are simple and not too long.
Certain words have little "pictographs" with the word that it's for directly underneath it in smaller print. I suppose this is to help the child learn to read these certain words. Since my daughters are still pretty young (the oldest is now just learning the sounds different letters make; she already can recognize all the letters), we haven't really tried to use these little pictures in that way. Although, we've read this story so many times to them that they "read along" by reciting from memory certain parts of the story. All Dora the Explorer books are great fun for the kids because it involves them in the story much like the TV show does.
I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulously fun for my 2-year old.......2006-03-26

My son absolutely loves this book and so does his 2-year old cousin. He enjoys looking at the pictures to "guess" the word and it makes him feel like he's really reading the book. This is his favorite book and wants to read it every day.

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Dora Adventure - a review of "Dora in the Deep Sea".......2005-12-14

We like "Dora in the Deep Sea". My children like it because it has a pretty good story and because it is about Dora, Boots and Pirate Piggy. I like it because it is a good read-aloud, has lots to point out and talk about, and because it allows for a different sorts of interactivity depending on age.

In that regards, Amazon suggests this book for the 4 to 8 age range, but I think it is much more versatile than that. For example, for babies you can read the story and talk about what animals are in the picture and what color they are. [There are seagulls, a variety of silly fish, octopuses, sea anemones, eels, crab, starfish, clams, stingrays, turtles, lobsters, whale, squid, frog, snail, fox (Swiper) and sea horses. There are a great many colors to discuss as well.]

For older toddlers and preschoolers you can `enhance' the story experience by moving your finger over the text, stopping at the `icons' with the intent of letting them fill in the blanks. My children get excited by this because it gives them the sense that they are beginning to feel apart of the `reading'. And if our experience is any indication, they learn that text flows from left to right and top to bottom.

Advanced preschoolers and kindergarteners on up can then begin to use the book for its stated purpose. They can begin to read it themselves. Most words are small: I, am, this, sad, will, the, and help. Although there are harder words for sure: Hooray, swipe, friend, something, clownfish, pirate, and pinch.

Four stars. A pretty good story (see previous reviewers fine summary) about the popular characters from the "Dora the Explorer" TV show. It can be used for babies to beginning readers. It engages children in the flow and process of reading, i.e. how it is done.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars And now, "A Treasure Deep", by Alton Gansky........2005-07-27

Well, I picked up this with some anticipation, and in an anxious manner, both good and bad. Gansky is an incredible author, that's not to be debated. But the last book I read by him, I wasn't too impressed. His 3rd J.D. Stanton novel, "Out of Time" wasn't my favorite. But I was really hoping that this would redeem the Senior Pastor and author, and indeed he showed us once again what makes him great.

This is the beginning of Perry Sachs, an engineer, and his adventures. Well, if you are looking for a page turner, this is worth it! Just imagine a secret! Yeah, one of those, "You aren't qualified to know" type deals, ok? So suppose this effort attracts the Mayor's attention. Could be trouble, right? It might even attract some negative attention. It could get action packed, and it may get bloody at times. Oh yes, this is a treasure, one that you'll share with friends and family, because you don't just keep something this good to yourself!

In saying that, there are some good messages in this. One is to those who have ever blamed God for something. It gives you a certain amount of humility to realize that you shouldn't blame Him, although a lot of us do, myself included. There is nothing He can't handle, and nothing He can't forgive. Anne Fitzgerald found that out, and she also found that God's grace is so sweet.

This is just the first of a 3 book series, and I'm hoping that the other 2 pack a punch like this one did!

4 out of 5 stars Good suspense! Imaginative concept!.......2005-05-21

I won't rehash the details of the other reviews, so I'll just say I found the concept of the treasure and its location quite imaginative. I think one thing that happens in the end is sad, but makes a strong point. The characters are varied and interesting with the antagonists and their ruthlessness being ultimately counterproductive to their goal. After the story ended I thought to myself, "Why didn't they just ask?" What exactly am I talking about? To find that out you'll have to ride Mr. Gansky's freight train of suspense and action. From the special savant, Joseph, to the incredibly powerful Alex Olek, you will enjoy this book. The changing relationship between Perry Sachs and the mayor is just one of the interesting character relationships in the book. Give this one a read -- you won't be sorry. I leave you with -- Perry...uhh! :)

5 out of 5 stars Think you've got it figured out? You don't!.......2004-03-16

This is the type of novel that keeps me coming back to Alton Gansky's work. When you think you finally see where this is going (ala Kevin Bowen's "Wil's Bones" or Paul Maier's "Skeleton in God's Closet"), you're wrong! The storyline keeps a fairly consistent pace throughout. You'll come up with a dozen theories as to what the "Treasure" in the title is, but by the end you'll realize you weren't even close. I highly recommend this novel as an example of what Mr. Gansky can do when he's "on". If this is your first experience with his work, then follow it up with "The Prodigy" or "Vanished".

4 out of 5 stars A Treasure Deep by Alton L. Gansky.......2003-07-30

I found A Treasure Deep, by Alton L. Gansky, to be a real page-turner. The concept was fresh, the story captivating, and it was truly hard to put down. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fast-paced novel.

5 out of 5 stars Stories of Ships, How they Sank, and Diving to Them.......2005-03-22

Although the sub-title of this book implies that it is about diving, I find that this book is more about the ships themselves, and how they sank than about diving on them. And there seem to be so many books like this one on sunken ships that you have to kind of have to be surprised to see that there are any ships still afloat.

This book pretty much covers the world. It has sunken Roman ships in the Med. Spanish treasure ships bring back gold and silver from the Ne World. Ships from various wars seem to litter the ground in places like Scapa Flow. There is much more coverage of the Atlantic areas than of the Pacific.

Mr. Fine clearly loves the ocean and its collenction of sunken ships. It is clear that he has carefully researched the ships he is writing about. I found the book hard to put down.

5 out of 5 stars Showcases the most exciting of his discoveries.......2005-02-07

Blend an award-winning photojournalist with a scuba diving expertise and you have the elements of an intriguing story in Lost On The Ocean Floor: Diving The World's Ghost Ships. Fine has explored and documented not just a few but many of the sunken fleets of the world for most of his adult life, so Lost On The Ocean Floor showcases the most exciting of his discoveries, not just a few. Science blends with archaeology and drama to create a title which will appeal to general interest readers as much as ocean archaeologists and fellow discoverers.

1 out of 5 stars LOST ON THE OCEAN FLOOR : DIVING THE WORLD'S GHOST SHIPS.......2005-01-05

I was really disatified with this book. I just can`t really find much good to say about it. The pictures, the few that was in book were more about cannonballs and jewelry that were found on some ships. The author wrote alot about how some ships were built but didn't tell how some of the ship even looked under water or the damage they had taken to sink.In my opinion the sunken ships in the pacific ocean were not covered enough. If you are interested in sunken ships I would avoid this book at all costs.

4 out of 5 stars Good Florida coast read.......2002-01-26

If you like the type of main character found in James Lee Burke novels (ex-Viet Nam, military, tough guy sort), I recommend this book. Good plot, pretty good character development and lots of mood found in the north coast of Florida environs. These guys that live in old mossy big mansions on the canals and waterways of Florida have got it made! They seem to have the money to spend plenty of time fishing and watching great flaming sunsets over the gulf... and they always have the time to help out a friend who is in trouble. It's what I would call a good "airport read"... You will probably have to search the used book stores for this one. His books are hard to find.

2 out of 5 stars Edge-of-the-chair reading.......2007-05-13

I thoroughly enjoyed it! The author's character development is very good which is of utmost importance to me when reading fiction. The message was clear and not preachy. The action scenes were breathtaking, and made me want to hurry up to the next sequence. Good reading for those who like good thrillers without all the sex and language that usually accompany them.

4 out of 5 stars I dove into this with great expectations!.......2006-04-28

It ended up being a good read instead, and that's no loss for me. Tom Morrisey is an author I'll continue to support in the future. Naturally when I first saw the title, it easily looked very similar to "Yucatan Deep", and I knew that diving had to be involved! To say the least, I thought Morrisey composed this together a lot better than "Yucatan", but for me the expectations couldn't have been higher.

This is the first introduction to Beck Easton. And almost immediately we run into Jennifer Cassidy. Some treasure hunting is in order, and it gets a little complex. When it comes down to it, you have 2 schools of thought between Beck and Jennifer, and as they say, opposites attract, amen? But Beck Easton has done a lot, he holds a 5th degree black belt in karate, and the man knows about diving! He also has an awesome faith in Christ, and he knows about grace, as well as a little mercy. Jennifer Cassidy, on the other hand, knows her history. You impressed? Nah, I'm not saying too much more. You'll have to read it to find out the really good stuff!

I suppose I was expecting a little bit more from this. But that's what "Dark Fathom" is for. I walk away satisfied from this adventure! Thanks, Tom!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2005-08-29

I just finished this great book by Tom Morrisey and will anxiously be looking forward to the next one of his books I can come across. I have been an avid fan of Alton Gansky and am so pleased to find another Christian fiction writer that can keep me as captivated. I found myself anxiously looking forward to what the next page would bring. Being a woman I especially enjoyed the part of a tough, ex-marine not being ashamed to show how important his faith and Christian beliefs were to him. All I can say is, Well Done, Tom Morrisey, Well Done. I can't wait for the next book of the Beck Easton's series.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting Adventure.......2005-07-21

Jennifer Cassidy is a university graduate assistant who has been hired for a summer job researching the history of Cecilia Sinclair. In researching the former Civil War widow, Jennifer comes across information that leads her to a diving spring in Florida. Enlisting the help of Beck Easton, a former marine diver, Jennifer is determined to discover the secret that Cecilia had hidden there.

In the spring, Beck recovers a 140 year-old clue from the spring that convinces Jennifer to begin a treasure hunt all over America to uncover the mystery surrounding a concealed secret. Unknown to either, is that there is someone else interested in what Beck and Jennifer have found who is watching their every move.

Deep Blue by Tom Morrisey was an excellent novel that I enjoyed reading. The plot has historical accuracy, which was greatly appreciated as it showed obvious research of facts. I found the characters of Beck and Jennifer real instead of unbelievable. Sometimes the terminology got a little hard to understand but not enough to take away from the story. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2005-07-20

As a prolific reader and a "tough sell" when it comes to this kind of fiction, I can't say enough about Deep Blue. I've been drawn in and pulled under and will watch for more of Tom Morrissey's great writing.
