5 out of 5 stars A Lifelong Resource.......2007-02-23

This book was published just after I took the course with the same title with the author in the 1980's. I am now a professor myself at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Pa. I have used this book as a resource to teach as well as to write and create presentations for workshops. It is an excellent resources, well written, comprehensive, and as pertinent today as the day it was published. It is a 'must' for any teacher involved with art, art history, women students, or women's studies. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in women's history.

2 out of 5 stars Slatkin's book.......2003-05-22

Another reviewer here wrote that this would be an appropriate book for a beginning art history class. Well, take it from me, an art history teacher, that the students were bored with this book. The only complaint for my Women in Art (no prerequisite required) course was that this book needed to be replaced with something more in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro Book.......2002-05-20

An excellent starting point for anyone looking for the basic information about women artists throughout the history, their lives, and their impact on the evolution of the Western art. It presents just a brief introduction to the most significant artists, but will make you want to learn more about every one of them.

1 out of 5 stars The book is a simple introduction to the subject........1998-06-20

Wendy Slatkin has produced an introduction to a subject which deserves a more indepth study. She offers a outline of women artists and their work that is, however, suitable for a beginning class of Art History students. It crys out for a broader scope and more detailed research, particularily in the area of 20th Century artists. It is, in this sense, an inspirational 'textbook'.

5 out of 5 stars Tut is in Town.......2007-05-07

The Tut exhibit is in town this summer and I wanted to be able to provide some information to my seven year old before we went. This book was absolutely the right amount of information for the 7-10 year old age group. We enjoyed it so much that we have purchased additional books in the series and are racing through those as well. I highly recommend the series as a great introduction to biographies!

    Book Description

Since it was first published in Hebrew in 2000, this provocative book has been garnering acclaim and stirring controversy for its bold reinterpretation of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity in the Middle Ages, especially in medieval Europe. Looking at a remarkably wide array of source material, Israel Jacob Yuval argues that the inter-religious polemic between Judaism and Christianity served as a substantial component in the mutual formation of each of the two religions. He investigates ancient Jewish Passover rituals; Jewish martyrs in the Rhineland who in 1096 killed their own children; Christian perceptions of those ritual killings; and events of the year 1240, when Jews in northern France and Germany expected the Messiah to arrive. Looking below the surface of these key moments, Yuval finds that, among other things, the impact of Christianity on Talmudic and medieval Judaism was much stronger than previously assumed and that a "rejection of Christianity" became a focal point of early Jewish identity. Two Nations in Your Womb will reshape our understanding of Jewish and Christian life in late antiquity and over the centuries.

    Book Description

Small and frail, Tutankhamen was an all but ignored member of the royal family of the great Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III. At the school of the menoi, or tutors, he did not excel at physical activities with the other royal princes. Keeping to himself, he observed and admired the work of his father's craftsmen, who built glorious temples to Egypt's many gods. Someday he too would find a gift for those gods.

Then Amenhotep III died and the unpopular reign of Tutankhamen's brother ended in mystery. Who now would be pharaoh? Could it be a boy of only ten?

As he did with the life of Saint Valentine (Atheneum, 1992), Robert Sabuda combines simple text with artwork true to the historical period in which Tutankhamen lived.

    5 out of 5 stars Tutankhamen's Gift Book.......2007-07-05

No one does a "pop - up book" better than Robert Sabuda.
An Egyptian fan for a long time, this book was a perfect gift
for myself. Spent literally hours with it !

    1 out of 5 stars Appallingly inaccurate!.......2007-03-24

If I could give this book zero stars I would. This book came highly recommended as a great way to introduce Egyptian History to children. I was stunned to read the book only to find it was horridly inaccurate! While I realize this is supposed to be historical fiction, at least some attempt at historical accuracy should have been attempted. Not every parent has an interest or knowledge of Egyptian History so many wouldn't notice, but since this book is reccomended by at least two homeschool curricula, and parents expect the authors of those curricula to have at least passing knowledge of the history they are teaching, I think fair warning is needed.

According to this book, Tutankhamen was the son of Amenhotep III.
Amenhotep III was actually Tutankhamen's grandfather. Tutankhamen was the son of Amenhotep IV, Akhenaten. Not Amenhotep IV's younger brother as portrayed in the book. Also, Akhenaten didn't die after a short time as Pharaoh, he ruled for at least 17 years. About the only thing the book got correct was that Akhenaten did change the religion from poly-theism to mono-theism and that Egypt was returned to poly-theism after Tutankhamen became Pharaoh.

If you are looking to teach your children Egyptian History, and want accurate Egyptian History, skip this one.

    2 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2007-01-12

I love Robert Sabuda but this boring story and equally boring pop ups are not worthy of his usual high-quality items. It appears to me that this was done to make a quick buck for the holiday seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Egyptian Art.......2006-02-13

I love Robert Sabuda's work and this is no exception! The problem with trying to interest young children in ancient history is that little is written in biographical fashion for young readers. Apart from encyclopedia or fact books, there are few good books on the ancient civilisations. It is therefore refreshing that Sabuda has put together this story about a boy king. It is made even more gorgeous by the artwork which painstakingly recreates the art of that great civilisation on papyrus-like backgrounds. Check out also Saint Valentine by the same author.

As to a reviewer's comment that Amazon should make it clear that this is not a pop-up book, I would have thought that the price tag (at 6.99) and the fact that it is a paperback book should have made this self-evident! That's not reason enough to bring down this book's rating!

    1 out of 5 stars Tutankhamen's Gift.......2006-02-01

I was disappointed that this book was not a pop-up as Robert Sabuda books are usually. The book was too old for a 5 year old but would have been fine if it was a pop-up. The seller's need to make that clear that is not a pop-up.

5 out of 5 stars Who constructed them and why?.......2006-08-14

Everyone has heard of the famous site at Stonehenge,Newgrange B and Carnac;but there are literally thousands of these types of 'stone sites' scattered throughout Western Europe and the British Isles. It seems they were constructed ,probably by the Celts as long ago 4,000 years and even 6,or 7,000 years B.C. . Ancient history is generally thought to go back to 4,000 years B.C. These 'Stones of Memory' predate that by several milleniums into Antiquity. The more that is understood about them, the more we see that man was much more developed, knowledgeable and societies much more structured than often believed or imagined.
This is a rather small book but packs a great deal in it.It tries to cover this subject and does it very well with an easily understood text and over 200 color photographs, many double page, drawings, maps, and black and white photographs and etchings from the earliest times when Archaeologists tried to determine who constructed them and to make some sense of their purpose.
The book does not pretend to cover everything; but it is certainly a very ood summary for anyone who wants to learn more about the subject. The author is French;the book was translated from French and is definitely slanted to sites in France. This does not distract from its value, though.
There is a good Glossary of terms which apply to the subject,a detailed list of locations of all photos. There is a fairly good list of books for further reading, though many are French.Other books for further reading should not be a problem; as they exist in the hundreds and probably the thousands.
I have a book "The Modern Anntiquarian" by Julian Cope which is a wonderful book on over 300 sites. It includes over 600 photographs, explanations of each site. The author visited each site . Maps and illustrations are included so that they could be found and visited if desired. There are also over 50 poems included. It is a beautiful book and comes in a fine slipcase

4 out of 5 stars Has an Incredible Amount of Information.......2000-08-14

To me, the graphics accompanying the text convey an incredible amount of information. I do not agree that this book doesn't include info about the religious background of these megaliths.

If the book has a weakness it is that it focuses on the French sites. The author is a Frenchman and he favors what he knows the most about, I guess. I would say that half of the sites here are French. And there is no mention that I see of Baalbek or a stone circle discovered in the Golan Heights.

3 out of 5 stars A general overview of the subject.......2000-04-09

This Discoveries volume, like the rest, was written with the beginner audience in mind, and for that audience it may well fulfill its goal. However, for a 176-page book it offers an amazingly obvious lack of information, perhaps because there are simply far too many graphics which do not support the text but merely illustrate the megaliths in question from various vantage points. There is little to be found on the subject of the stones' religious background, as well as anything about the culture of the people who erected them. At best, this book may be useful in acquiring the basic knowledge of the subject.

      3 out of 5 stars Megaliths.......2000-03-26

For anyone who already has a background in prehistory, this is probably a little too general. For someone just learning about the subject, it would be a good book to start with as it is heavily illustrated, covers the history of and personalities involved in the study of these early stone structures, and includes a very nice bibliography of the subject. The latter includes several, in fact mostly, books and articles in French which would require at least a reading knowledge of that language, although this volume is itself in English.

      Book Description

Now more than ever, digging into the land of the Bible is a weapon as two rival nations seek to prove their claims to its treasures. The most recent casualty in this tug-of-war is Albert Glock, a prominent American archaeologist. Fox investigates Glocks murder and its background in the explosive cultural politics of archaeology in the Holy Land.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Local complexity of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.......2006-12-27

How important can archeology be today? Unbelievably crucial. In this part of the world it is the justification for worldview, religion, the meaning of life. It seems all of the parties involved come off are charlatans, awful human beings, and trying to justify their own criminality via archeology. This poor Dr Glock gets ineptly kmixed up in it and gets himself killed.
No matter how complex the issues of Palestine/Israel appear, they are clearly more complicated. And they are international, national, and LOCAL.
The book is clearly written and fun to read. Do not expect an answer.
I would have liked even more archeology.

4 out of 5 stars Digging Up Conflict, Fascinating and Biased.......2006-10-05

The phenomenon that catalyzes - and paralyzes -- the Israeli-Palestinian conflict seems to be the riddle of our age. By reopening this 1992 murder investigation, journalist Fox reveals how much wider a puzzle it is. Why has this patch of earth attracted so much political, cultural, and religious investment?

Investigating the murder of Dr. Albert Glock, director of the Palestinian Institute of Archaeology, Fox uncovers the key role Biblical archaeology, an opportunistic subdiscipline founded on the idea that the Bible is a true chronicle of history, has played in Palestine's tumultuous history.

Since the age of the Holy Roman Emperor Constantine, the field has been replete with religious charlatans and swashbuckling adventurers, generals and statesmen, all mining Palestine for biblical wonders to advance their own causes. Fox calls this "negative cosmopolitanism", meaning the identification of many people with one place -- the region's most insoluble problem.

Making the landscape fit the map has served the modern state of Israel, Fox claims, yet soon enough he admits his bias, writing that he "took to rooting for the Palestinian underdog."

Regarding the Hague Convention's 1954 prohibition of excavation in occupied territories, the author gleefully reports Professor Glock's circumventions, while reminding us "all respectable archaeologists" refrained from excavating, "except the Israelis."

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and compelling!.......2005-08-11

A well-written, compelling account of the politics and various agendas of two centuries of archaeology in Palestine and Israel, as well as as a troubling and eye-opening study of social, political, and crime issues in Israel and the Occupied Territories in the '90s.

      4 out of 5 stars Good..........2003-06-28

All I have to say is-

I've read it, and it's good, but I recommend this book's original version- Palestine Twilight. For some reason, the title was changed when it came to America, and some elements were edited out.

1 out of 5 stars Author should have stuck to the Archaeology.......2003-04-25

      Caveat Emptor.

The fascinating world of Albert Glock is wasted in this wretched display of "yellow" journalism. The first 25 pages tempt the reader with Glock's difficult and languid childhood. After chapter 3, the author loses perspective of his topic, instead providing us with a hackneyed description of Glock's revolutionary methods to find the Palestinian's common ancestors.

Part two of "Sacred" squanders what could have been a fascinating study into the mind of the radical archaeologist. Instead we are presented with Fox's opinionated and, at times, churlish investigation of Glock's murder.

If Fox remembered the Birzeit professor's suggestion that the "answer lies in the archaeology", than perhaps he would have foraged deeper into the cultural and intellectual historical influences that formed his eccentric archeological methods.

Graham helps you see the difficulty and cost, both financial and personal, that this kind of obsession creates, making Maudslay's work that much more compelling. The only downside (smile) to reading this book is that you may be forced (forced!) as I was, to find a decent and expensive copy of the Maudslay archaeology volumes of Biologia Centrali-Americana, which becomes a must-have, once you've read Graham.

5 out of 5 stars A portrait of Alfred Maudslay.......2003-03-02

A long overdue biography of the great mayanist traveller, explorer and early archaeologist. Graham does a good job of weaving together information from personal interviews, letters, journals and notes. I found it a highly readable and informative account of his life and accomplishments. It lends a human touch to a name which comes up over and over in reading on the ancient Maya. It also provides a fascinating early travelogue of central america 50 years after Stephens and Catherwood. Graham has a keen appreciation of the challenges Maudslay faced in his self appointed task of recording as many mayan monuments and inscriptions as he could, a career path which indeed echoes his own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Child and Parent.......2006-11-14

This is an excellent book on Egyptology. It has a more personal narration then most books on Egypt--partly due to the authors use of first person narrative and partly due to his passion and enthusiasm on the subject. The effect is the reader takes more then just a factual view of data surrounding stories of Curses in Egypt but rather a personalized look at Archaeology. This is an excellent book for any school aged child weather he is interested or not in Archeology.
This book starts out with and introduction about Zahi Hawass and some of the sites he has worked on including the tombs of the pyramid builders. He then goes into talking about Tutankhamun and how the rumors of a curse began. He then describes some of the information known about ancient grave robbers as well as his own experiences with the curse.
The Appendix in this book is amazing. It has 5 parts:
*Tips for becoming and Archaeologist - This is a good guide for children who dream of following in Dr. Hawass's footsteps.
*Tracing Egypt's glorious past--One of the best brief Chronologys of the periods and kingdoms of Ancent Egypt.
*How mummies were made--this was one of the few spots that was a bit dry.
*Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt--While this section is not compleate (there were I think thousands of different Gods and Goddesses) it does provide a brief description on 17 of the major ones.
*Glossary--Basic glossary of terms used in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Curse of the Pharoahs.......2005-09-06

Excellent book. Informative for adults and children. Our 8 and 10 year old sons read this book in preparation for viewing the King Tut exhibit. It was a great introduction to Egypt, the pharaohs, and archaeology. The author was a speaker on the audiotape and featured in the end of the exhibit. Highly recommended.

Well written and easy to read. Would be a good book to get children interested in the pharoahs. Wonderful pictures.
