Wilt Chamberlain... The "Loser".......2003-03-06
I feel that this book truly portrays the life of an African-American superstar in the 60's and 70's. He is a bit egotistical at times, but is always truthful (except for the part about all the women). All through his career, he is called a loser because of what his team is accomplishing and not him. In his first several years, his teams consistently played the Celtics in the playoffs, and instead of the Warriors vs. the Celtics, it became Bill Russel vs. Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt would consistently beat out Russel in every category, yet his team would still lose. When this happened, Wilt was called the loser. He was told that Russel schooled him time and time again, when really, it was the other way around.
This book accurately portrays what it would be like to face the "Loser" label your whole life. It wasn't fair at all, but Wilt successfully had a good season after another. I definately reccomend this book to anyone who likes success stories or if you like sports biographies. In fact, I recommend it to anybody
Wilt Can Write.......2001-08-10
Over twenty-five years ago, Wilt Chamberlain took the belief that professional athletes are dumb and flushed it like a loose stool. In this book, he shares truths about his groundbreaking NBA salaries, his views on dating, and other famous basketball personalities. His sense of humor entertains his readers, while his intelligence, clearly evidenced by his vocabulary, constantly enlightens. For everyone old enough to vote, this book will be a wonderful experience.

Who Becomes A Terrorist and Why.......2003-03-23
I found this book to be incredibly insightful. This book not only explores al-queda, but several other terrorist organizations around the world. This book is based on numerous studies, spanned over 3-4 decades, and gives psychological, sociological, economical, and educational profiles of people who choose this lifestyle. The Appendix of the book lists many major terrorist groups, their leaders, and what each particular groups ideals and goals are.
I do not suggest buying this book if you find reports or statistics boring, as this book has plenty of them. (This was a report published by the U.S. government in 1999) However, if you are very interested in psycholog and what it entails, it is still worth a read as the percentages and stats are relevant to the information in the book.
This book also includes an excellent study on female terrorists, which I found to be particularly startling. I was quite unaware of the number of female terrorists formerly or currently involved with these groups, as the most known terrorists in the Western world are male.
Some of the statistics in this book were quite surprising to me, such as the education level of these people. This book shows the growing trends in terrorism, and shows how terrorism has evolved over many decades. This book was very helpful in understanding why people commit acts of terrorism and how it may be possible in the future to deal with such people.
Knowledge is Power.......2002-07-31
Anyone who wants to get a glimpse of just how much is "knowable" should read this book.
Though many will find the academic style of this book somewhat daunting, it provides an incredible vantage on just how much our government discovered about international terrorism BEFORE September 11th. If you read this book bearing in mind that its contents are not classified, you can begin to imagine how much specific intelligence the FBI, CIA, and NSA must have -- and now we're creating an Office of Homeland Security?
This book will convince you wholly and completely that tragedies like 9/11 are avoidable -- it's not the information that's the problem, it's wether or not that information informs policy. I sure hope this is required reading for our Congress.

Book Description
David Aikman profiles six extraordinary people who have changed the century by modeling essential, undeniable virtues. With amazing insight, respected journalist David Aikman examines the lives of Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, Billy Graham, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Pope John Paul II and Elie Wiesel in this book about greatness for a generation without heroes.

I'm biased, but this is great........2002-08-29
It was truly wonderful to read David's biographies of these great souls. There is quite a warts-and-all documentary style to this, but I really felt that I got into the lives of the people. For instance, I felt like I got a better picture of Billy Graham from the one chapter on him here than I did from the whole of Graham's autobiography.
Full disclosure: I know David a little, we go to church together. But it's STILL a great book. I hope you can still find it around.
Great writing from a great man........2000-09-15
What a wonderful book! I have the privilege of knowing the author, and I can say that Dr. Aikman has not only unveiled six great souls for our benefit, but has exposed the greatness of his own.
A word of gratitude to the author........1999-09-20
I really want to thank Mr. Aikman for this book. It illustrates the way a pure soul can be used by God to accomplish things beyond anyone's expectations. The author masterfully weaves anecdotes, interviews and biographical information to connect us in a unique way to these great people. I came away inspired to try and carry away remnants of each of these wonderful people. Thank you for such a masterful work. It is profound in so many ways.

Biographies of Six Spiritual Leaders.......1999-02-15
Great Souls: Six Who Changed the Century is undoubtedly one of the best collections of biographies I have read in years. In an era where celebrities are designated "heroes" and fifty or so men in New Orleans are called "Saints", it is refreshing - no it's inspiring - to read about five men and a woman whose attitudes and actions had a profound and positive effect on this century. David Aikman, a talented foreign correspondent for Time Magazine turned writer, has done a superb job capturing, in a few pages, the extraordinary lives and accomplishments of Billy Graham, Mother Teresa, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Pope John Paul II, Elie Wiesel and Nelson Mandela. If you are looking for perfect people, you won't find them in Aikman's book. What you will find, however, are six individuals who again and again, rose above their times and circumstances to change, if only for a brief time, the course of human events. Aikman's astute observations into the worldly and spiritual lives of these great souls hold important lessons for all of us today. Mother Teresa's inexhaustible compassion for the poorest of the poor, Nelson Mandela's amazing capacity to forgive, Billy Graham's urgent quest for salvation for the human soul, Solzhenitsyn's implacable pursuit of the truth, Pope John Paul's passion for human dignity and Eli Wiesel's constant reminders of the profound wickedness that lurks in the hearts of men, these are some of the lessons in store for those who read this enjoyable and inspirational book. Perhaps the best chapter is the last. Here Aikman uses Eli Wiesel's compelling and tragic story to inquire into the nature of evil. Was Adolph Hitler a charismatic but misguided despot or Satan incarnate? Was the Holocaust "a mutation on a cosmic scale" or "merely the natural shoots watered by Europe's longtime subterranean lake of anti-Semitism"? As we move from this millennium to the next, hopefully the brilliant lights of these great souls will illuminate the answers to these questions and be a lamp unto the uncertain path that lies before us.

Author Skip Press has assembled an eminently useful one-stop compendium of agent and producer listings (directors are subsumed in the producer section) for neophyte screen scribes. It includes fairly informative essays ("Maybe You Should Write a Book" as a faster way to break in), up-to-date stuff on the Internet, and listservs of interest to wordslingers. This is a good place to start for a screenwriting overview before deciding whether to proceed to more specialized volumes--or straight to a film career.

Customer Reviews:
Incompetent author.......2004-10-30
It is my habit to keep silent when I read a very bad book--- I prefer letting the book speak for itself. As a writer myself, I dislike "lay" readers' criticism (though I seek and accept informed, knowledgable criticism). I was asked to read this book and give my opinion, based upon my dozen years writing and selling manuscripts.
Here is my opinion: IGNORE THIS BOOK. It was obsolete when it was published, and the "advice" within it is very poor. A writer who follows the advice is not, in my opinion, likely to sell much, if anything.
For example, publishers *LOATHE* writers who send them manuscripts unsolicited; they *DETEST* writers who telephone them without given leave to do so. When I was co-editor of a popular nature recreation magazine for nine months, it was common practice to put the senders of unsolicited material on the "ignore this person" list--- we do not have time, nor the inclination, to read every manuscript sent. As a writer, I learned a decade ago that sending unsolicited material will put the writer in the trash can, unread.
Publishers expect, and most demand, query letters these days.
My advice, as a successful and well-published author: reject this book, and run and and purchase a copy of "Writer's Market." Read the first five chapters--- it will tell you exactly what you need to know about breaking into the fields. "Writer's Market" costs $30 and is updated every year: it will give you an excellent idea on who is buying, what is selling, and how to join that market successfully. "Skip Press'" book does not.
Invaluable tool for anyone wanting to break into Hollywood!.......2002-03-23
Skip's book, The Writer's Guide, has become the book that I carry around with me! I refer to it for everything, including lessons on etiquette when contacting agents or production companies. The response I have received for all of my scripts after heeding his advice in this book is overwhelming. Eight out of ten production companies have requested my screenplays, and I am certain this would have never happened without his book! He tailors each agent or producers needs specifically, so a writer can pin-point exactly who is right for a particular project. Anyone who wants to make contacts in this industry should not only read this book, but keep it with them throughout their career!
This Book Is Outdated.......2000-08-05
...
There are plenty of other books on Amazon that are muchmore useful than this one (and they're written by someone who has actually sold a screenplay). Pass on this paper weight book.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK-IT'S OLD.......2000-07-19
I queried several of the agencies and companies listed in this book, and guess what? The post office returned many of the letters because the addresses were either wrong, outdated, or the recipient was no longer there. AMAZON SHOULD TAKE THIS BOOK OFF THE SITE; IT IS A RIP-OFF!
This book Really HELPED me 100%.......2000-04-11
I'm from South America, and when I went to Los Angeles to try to find an agent for my project to be able to sell it, I decided to buy this book "just for the attracting cover", but then it became the best book I could ever bought for finding that agent. I didn't know where to start, and after reading almost half of it in one night, I wake up next day knowing exactly which 20 agents (my personal choose, on his recommendations)I had to visit, and what kind of letters to take them. I finally visited 14, and left my project info in all of them. I got calls from 4 of them, and finally signed up with CAA. You can't believed it?, Well it's true, and (thank you very much, Skip), you can check it out directly with him, 'cause after returning to my country, I finally got in touch with him, and he even help me more by email. Actually he became a friend. Thanks. P.S. Anyway, it also help a lot to have a good project to sell, isn't it.. ;-)

Terrific portrayal of Joe D.......2001-08-23
Unlike the Cramer book, this book relies heavily on firsthand anecdotes offered by people who knew Dimaggio. And it pretty much covers every aspect of his adult life. I loved it, and it allowed me to get to know the Yankee Clipper pretty well without author conjecture and hyperbole.

It is increasingly difficult, these days, to get an editor to look at an "unagented" manuscript. The right agent can provide entrée to the right editors, and Writer's Digest's annual Guide to Literary Agents will help you determine just who those right agents are. Though some of the top literary agencies go missing here, this annual tome is still the most comprehensive of its kind. The 550 agencies listed are divided by type and cross-referenced by specialty, location, and "openness to submissions." While this guide's primary value is in its listings, the articles are worth noting, as well. Aside from the usual pieces on queries, rights, and agents from hell, this year's edition features a discussion with two agents about the effect of the conglomeration of the publishing business on writers.
For the best insight into an agency, check out the "Tips" section at the end of its listing. While one recommends you "sell yourself like a product" (Bart Andrews & Associates), another "will ignore the adjectives you may choose to describe your own work" (Jabberwocky Literary Agency). The Linda Roghaar Literary Agency advises unappetizingly that "the process of finding the right agent is like eating an elephant--you do it one bite at a time." And agent Malaga Baldi once again provides the best description of the many roles an agent may play in a writer's life. "To one author I may serve as a nudge," she says, "to another a confidante, and to many simply as a supportive friend. I am also a critic, researcher, legal expert, messenger, diplomat, listener, counselor and source of publishing information and gossip." --Jane Steinberg
Customer Reviews:
Indispensable for authors with a finished manuscript in hand.......2000-11-21
I got the 1999 copy of this incredible guide from a friend who is currently writing her own non-fiction book. It is an incredible resource for both the aspiring and the accomplished writer. Of course, the listings of agents will change from year to year, but what is most useful about this guide is its articles on agents and the publishing industry. The authors have also done a very good job of including a list of helpful resources and organizations for writers of all stripes.
However, this book is most useful to those have a finished manuscript in hand, and want to get it in print. Aspiring writers like myself do learn from this volume how not to get taken by unscrupulous literary agents. We also learn what role(s) the agent plays, and we also learn what gets the agent's attention.
"Forewarned is fore-armed", said a wise man a long time ago. This guide and its later volumes can teach intrepid writers a lot. For the aspiring author, two other books along these lines that are worthwhile reads are Michael Larsen's How to Write a Book Proposal and Guide to Literary Agents.
INFORMER.......2000-01-26
I found the review to be good. But, I seek information on name, address and e-mails of the LITERARY AGENTS OF ART MOVIES(FEATURE FILMS) IN USA for my forthcoming film.
Sincerely yours
Apurba Chakraborty
indispensable - and entertaining.......1999-04-09
An indispensable book for anyone unfortunate enough to be looking for an agent. No other guide to agents is as well laid-out, as comprehensive, or as up to date. There's also entertainment value in comparing the arrogant posturing of so many agents, who act like they'll only accept the Great American Novel (and even then only if the manuscript is double-spaced!), with the kind of discount-table fodder they've succeeded in foisting onto publishers. But as long as publishers are too lazy to do their own reading, aspiring writers will need agents - and this superb guide to them.
the standard directory of literary agents.......1999-02-04
This is the 1999 version of the standard guide to literary agents. It has the same strengths and same weaknesses as the 1998 and earlier editions of this same work. Aside from the usual additions and subtractions in the listing pages, the only major difference from last year's book is the new introductory articles. Most of these articles are reprints from previous issues of Writers Digest magazine, but they're generally well worth reading. (Of course, this book is kinda like Playboy Magazine in that no one buys it for the articles, excellent though they may be in some cases.)
The listings are useful, but incomplete. Many important agencies have been left out for one reason or another.
Happily, fee-charging agencies are strictly segregated from the non-fee-charging agencies (which are the only ones you want to do business with.) Even if you are foolish enough to go with a fee-charging agency, you can at least assume that the agencies in this book do occasionally actually sell books to publishers.
(I might add that the editor of the 1999 edition, Donya Dickerson, is my second cousin's ex-wife. I've never even met the woman, and the generally positive nature of my review is not due to this rather attenuated family tie.)

A tribute to his legacy as a golfer and as a human being.......2001-02-17
Payne Stewart was a gifted professional golfer, a loving father, devoted husband, loyal friend, and a man of faith. On October 25, 1999, a plane on its way to Texas and carrying five people, crashed in a pasture in a remote area of South Dakota. The pilot and all of the passengers, including Payne Stewart, died. When he died, Stewart was enjoying his greatest year as a professional golfer as current defender of the U.S. Open, a member of the Ryder Cup Championship team, and the winner of the AT&T Celebrity Pro-Am in Pebble Beach. His silky golf swing and his knickers with a tam-o-shanter perched upon his head were all familiar trademarks of his colorful golfing persona. I Remember Payne Stewart is a tribute to his legacy as a golfer and as a human being through the comments, memories and anecdotes offered by relatives, college buddies, fellow golfers, sports reporters, and more. I Remember Payne Stewart is a striking and memorable collection of personal memories by those who knew him best and a "must read" for all Stewart fans who followed his golf course accomplishments with great enthusiasm for the man and the game.

Very superficial. Not nearly the depth of the authorized biography.
Outstanding treatment of Stewart.......2000-05-23
Fantastic treatment of this golf icon. And so timely. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

Book Description
What are we to make of the space between our visions and our realities? This collection of the three keynote addresses from the 1999 Norte Dame Center for Pastoral Liturgy Conference offers some great insight. Peter Phan examines the relationship between our life as members of God's good creation and our worship. He asks us to consider how the liturgy of life is the source and summit of the church's liturgy. Melissa Musick Nussbaum ask: For infants and young children, how is the table of the home reflected in the altar table of the Church? Where do the two tables meet? How can the table of the home and the table for the church reflect one another? Finally, Richard Vosko looks at the envirnment needed to be done before our worship and outlines some of the work that yet needs to be done before our worship spaces reflect our understanding of who and why.
