Both the early use of artificial lighting and current manufacturing methods concerning incandescent and fluorescent lamps are covered in this book. The protocols for manufacture of fluorescent lamp phosphors and those used in cathode ray tubes are also treated in some detail. This text surveys the amazing, vast array of artificial lighting devices known to date in terms of how they arose and are, or have been used by mankind.
A complete description of the formulations and methodology for manufacturing all known phosphors is given. The book will serve as a repository of such phosphor manufacturing methods, including that of cathode ray tube phosphors. Methods of manufacture of
lamp parts
are also presented, including that of tungsten wire. The original approaches used are described as well as improvements in technology. These will serve as comparative methods for present day manufacture of these components. A history of the lamp industry is presented. Several methods are given which may serve as a source for further work in the lamp industry. Some of the earliest work has been applied in the laser industry to develop new types of discharge lasers. These include nitrogen-gas lasers and the rare gas (excimer) lasers. Previous work on lamps may also be applied in the development of new types of lasers.

The holiday is marked by an abundance of lights displayed in homes and businesses.

I really am pleased how it approaches its subject matter. Most children's books about international holidays are too technical and long to be used as a read aloud. This book can be useful and provide useful information. If a student wants more they can read a more complex book later. It also helps include an ESOL child's holiday in class, even young kids.

This is the third book by Catherine Thuro on the subject of kerosene oil lighting and lamps. This book is as informative and useful as were her other two books. As an avid collector of whale oil and Kerosene oil antique lamps and lighting, I feel her books are one of the best reference sources available. I highly recommend this book to anyone who embraces the passion of collecting antique lighting!

Well worth having in your collection. A good introduction to the art of lighting theatre productions, with good explanations and examples of the design process. Simple information on control systems and basic patching processes but quite useful colour theory chapter. Also covers luminaires and effects projection techniques. All in all a good text.

Made planning some good lighting ideas for a new construction house a whole lot easier. Clearly explains some needed basic principles and considerations. I was able to communicate with our electrical contractor on a more informed level than I ever would have been without first going through another winner from the BH&G lineup of home related books.

This manual has been designed to help traffic accident investigators and reconstructionists meet the high standard of performance and expertise necessary to determine vehicle lamp status for “on” and “off” conditions at the time of a vehicle collision. Each chapter provides clear definitions of and statements about the topics it contains, with graduated commentary arranged so as to present a natural development and understanding of the chapter subject matter. A number of working hypotheses using examples and photographs are provided to assist the examining technician or analyst in the interpretation of items of evidence that might be presented. The text discusses examining the vehicle for exhibits, the precautions that must be taken in collecting and preserving evidence, lamp identification and analysis, hot and cold shock analysis, packaging and transferring exhibits to the forensic science laboratory, and the mistakes that are inherent in investigations and how to avoid them. In addition, the application of physics and vehicle behavior in relation to lamp damages is thoroughly discussed. The book has been written in a clear and concise style that is further enhanced by the liberal use of illustrations. It has been designed not only for use as a handy reference manual but also to be of assistance as a training manual for use in police training schools that include lamp examination as part of their curriculum. Traffic Accident Investigatior Lamp Manual .......2007-01-08
A very good book to understand the different failure modes when incandescent lightsource are used in a car, excellent pictures and examples, the procedures description are in use now, on the other hand a revision must be made to update with new lightsources used in the market; like HID (High Intensive Discharge) & the use of LED in traffic accidents, color pictures are neccesary to understand some failure modes, will be nice to add in the next edition.

A nice book to have to briefly educate yourself on many styles of late 19th and early 20th century lamps. Not so much a reference book as it is a book of education.
Terrific photos but pretty skimpy on reference features.......2005-01-14
This book provides a good overview of vintage lamps (including both oil and electric) and some excellent photos of an assortment of these lamps. If you like lamps, it is a pleasant book to read because of the excellent photography and the fairly broad array of lamp styles found in the book. I was, however, disappointed that the author falls short in the basic research that collectors really need. The title says it is a guide for antique lamp buyers, but the book has not been particularly helpful to me when I have looked at buying different lamps. For example, look up Bradley & Hubbard's electric lamps in the index and it directs you to photos of a sconce made by B&H - no electric lamps. It tells you little about the company history, their identifying marks, the quality of their product, and which styles tend to be preferred. Despite these critical comments, this still is probably the best book on the market today. So, I would recommend this book to beginning collectors and people who just like to look at good pictures of lamps. For the more serious collector, you might want to wait until Nadja Maril or another author publishes a new and improved version.

What a great book. Full of history, photos, examples, tips for the search of these lamps as well as proper care and restoration. I can't wait until the author writes another one! I highly recommend it to anyone.
The Best Book on the Subject.......2002-04-15
If you need accurate and practial information about old lamps and light fixtures, this is the best book on the market. I refer to it all the time! The pictures are of excellent quality and the writing is clear and concise.
A "Must Own" For Your Library.......1999-10-03
If you are looking for a book which has both an overview of different kinds of late 19th century and early 20th century American lighting and some practical advice on both buying and restoration; this is the book for you. It doesn't have everything; but a lot of good information, beautiful pictures and a price guide are included in its 142 pages. I like the way she has both original catalogue pictures and photographs. It's the best single book on the subject I've been able to find!
