5 out of 5 stars Good resource to start important discussions..........2006-06-04

It's been awhile since I've done any diabetes-related reading. My son has had type 1 for over 10 years, and I wondered if it was time to revisit some of my patterns I've developed in dealing with him and the condition. I found a number of helpful tips and aids in the book The Secrets of Living and Loving with Diabetes: Three Experts Answer Questions You've Always Wanted to Ask by Janis Roszler, William H. Polonsky, and Steven V. Edelman.

Contents: Hey, Who Invited You?; Even Robin Needed His Merry Men; Diabetes Police and Diabetes Criminals; Like a Pebble in a Pond; Don't Be A Diabetes Couch Potato; Is It Time to Panic?; Testing, Testing, and More Testing!; Does the Checkout Lady Need to Know?; Mind Your P's and Q's; Sex and Other Fun Stuff; Suggested Resources; Index

This isn't a long read (around 180 pages), and the payback for your time is pretty high. The book is written for both those who have the disease and those who live with someone who has it. After covering the material related to the chapter, they end the chapter with two sections. The first is titled "What A Person With Diabetes May Want His Or Friends To Know", and the second one is "What A Loved One May Want The Person With Diabetes To Know". These sections have a small handful of bullet points that relate feelings and emotions that each side would like the other to understand and recognize. If the whole subject of diabetes is one that you have a hard time talking about, these can serve as discussion points with your partner and will help focus the discussion into some productive areas. I realized that I've probably gone too far in one direction in terms of identifying Ian with the disease ("Does the Checkout Lady Need to Know"). I need to step back and understand that some people need to know and others don't. There's also a number of things I'd like Ian to read here, but we all know how hard it can be to get 19 year olds to read something *you* want them to read... :)

I would definitely recommend this book, especially to someone with type 2 diabetes. This can be something that is not taken as seriously as it should be, and having the discussions this book can produce could make all the difference.

The intimate issues that people need to know about diabetes are revealed with humor, personal anecdotes, soul-searching questionnaires, expert advice, current medical information, easily understood research data, and skill-building exercises with respect to the importance of living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In addition to those with diabetes, The Secrets To Living And Loving With Diabetes is also very strongly recommended reading for their loved friends, loved ones, and family members as well.

Book Description

In the normal course of relationships, we all depend on others to affirm our sense of who we are. There are some people, however, who are incapable of this fundamental form of give-and-take. Spend enough time around these narcissists and anyone can start to feel invisible. In this groundbreaking book -- the first popular book on narcissism in more than a decade -- clinical social worker and psychotherapist Sandy Hotchkiss shows how to cope with such controlling, egotistical people and offers healthy strategies for rebuilding self-esteem.

Why Is It Always About You? explores the dynamics of the narcissistic personality -- how such individuals come to have this shortcoming, why you get drawn into their perilous orbit, and what you can do to break free. There is a touch of narcissism that lives in all of us, and some of it is even normal. Before you can disentangle yourself from the "web" of someone else's unhealthy narcissism, you will have to examine your own foibles and vulnerabilities and come to terms with that most uncomfortable of feelings, shame.

Beginning with an explanation of what has become one of the foremost personality types of our time, Sandy Hotchkiss describes what she calls the "Seven Deadly Sins of Narcissism" -- Shamelessness, Magical Thinking, Arrogance, Envy, Entitlement, Exploitation, and Bad Boundaries -- and where they come from. You will learn to recognize the hallmarks of unhealthy narcissism in its many guises and to understand the roles that parenting and culture play in its creation.

Whether the narcissist in question is a co-worker, spouse, parent, or child, Why Is It Always About You? provides abundant practical advice and strategies for survival for anyone struggling to break narcissism's insidious spread from one generation to the next and for all those who encounter narcissists in their everyday life.

4 out of 5 stars If you can't "run for the hills".......2007-09-20

Great advice to run from a narcissist, especially when the person is someone you CAN leave. But there are relationships where it might not be possible to run (or running may have consequences you don't want to take on):

-- The narcissist is your graduate school advisor or department chair; running would mean you lose or postpone your degree;
-- The narcissist is a family member -- maybe your only surviving parent or sibling;
-- The narcissist is your CHILD (how does a mother or father run from their child?);
-- Your heritage and cultural background does not support you running from extended family members (like in-laws, parents, siblings), but really expects you to continue supporting them, even at your own expense.

I'm sure there are other situations where running isn't advisable or acceptable to the person dealing with a narcissist. This book is helpful for those people to first understand the monster, and more importantly to get a handle on their own boundaries.

3 out of 5 stars Why is it always about you?.......2007-09-14

"Why is it always about you" is about recognizing the narcissism in yourself and coping with the narcissism in others. The book is not just about Narcissistic Personality Disorder which, the author says, is rare, but rather about that fact that we all have varying degrees of narcissism ranging from healthy tendencies to malignant mental illness.

I am unconvinced by the author's psychoanalytic theories regarding child development but some of the more practical advice on coping may be helpful. The last section, "Only you can prevent narcissism" is about how moral relativism, the misguided self-esteem movement, and certain parental attitudes have largely contributed to the raging feelings of entitlement so pervasive in this narcissistic society in which we live. This section alone is worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver!.......2007-08-23

I bought this book to help me with issues with my father and sister. What a lifesaver! I'm really not crazy! That's what narcissistic people can make you feel when they are "shame dumping." It gives me a sense of peace and empowerment having put a label on their behavior. I feel like I now have the tools and knowledge to protect myself. I'm recommending the book to many people I know!

3 out of 5 stars Echoing the concerns of other reviewers..........2007-08-14

In my humble opinion, as someone who has done a good deal of reading on NPD and psychology in general, this book:

Is not a good jumping-off point for anyone interested in NPD, as it does not establish how to differentiate between a person high in self-interest and a truly disordered personality.
Is a little light on citations of scientific studies and instead reads more like pop-psych.
Includes a referendum on Western culture which is not truly constructive or educational.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT book, especially for anyone going into Social Work.......2007-08-11

This book was excellent. Informative, well-organized, easy to read, and thorough in it's presentation of Narcissicism at various levels, including narcissisim in teens, the elderly, parents, and in the work place. It also discusses societal implications and how the U.S. perpetuates narcissistic qualities. I highly recommend this book for anyone going into the social work field, particularly those who specialize in addiction. This book will not only help you to recognize the signs of Narcissistic Personality Disorder in clients, but it will give you the tools needed to cope with narcissistic behavior in your personal life. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Read On The Topic of God's Love For Me.......2007-08-14

I've enjoyed a meaningful relationship with God for 37 years, and have read extensively on the topic of God's love for individual people. This is definitely the best, most specific, and down-to-earth book I've read on this topic. It has impacted my life and how I view God. It's very freeing indeed.

5 out of 5 stars He Loves Me! The Relationship God Has Always Wanted with You.......2005-09-21

This book has made a huge difference in my life, and as a result I have not only purchased it for another person, but recommended it to several other people.

5 out of 5 stars Do Yourself a Favor and Read This Book.......2000-07-07

Excellent insight. A logical, biblical foundation for a new framework for understanding God's intended relationship with His children. Love, rather than fear. Even if you don't consider your relationship with God to be based on fear or "appeasement" (I didn't either), this book will challenge you to reassess many of the traditions and approaches that dominate many in the Evangelical Christian Church. However, the book is not written from a critical point of view. A freeing book. Approach with an open mind. This book is having a strong, positive impact on my life. I have recommended it highly to several friends.

Book Description

An expert in father-daughter relationships shows daughters how to forge a new path to communication with their fathers

Psychologist Linda Nielsen shows readers how every daughter can transform her relationship with her father--if she is willing to be the adult who does the emotional embracing rather than the angry, hurt little girl waiting for Daddy to embrace her. Based on her popular Fathers and Daughters course--the first in the country devoted to exploring father-daughter relationships--Nielsen shows every woman how to:

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teacher's book.......2007-09-18

The book is addressed to daughters who miss their fathers, physically, emotionally etc. But I gained a lot of insights on what daughters really expect and miss from fathers. Dr.Nielson takes the reader through a human development cycle on how much daughters can give their fathers in terms of love and opportunities to learn, grow and become better human beings, and contribute to family solidarity through empathy. Dr.Nielson advocates a "voluntarist" conception of love. A great departure from screaming "what's in it for me?" That is not to say that she discounts reciprocity in relationships.

The context addressed is set in the US culture of the post 1960 decades. However, the basic motivations are applicable universally. I have lived in the US among young people for over 12 years as a student and as a Univ Faculty. Now, in India I perceive the same problems and the message that parents have even more to learn through interaction with their children. The emphasis on daughters adds more emotional content and nuances to the discourse. I would observe that most of the problems and solutions discussed in the book apply equally well to sons.

There is an elemental message that runs through the book. It urges parents to come out of their pre-conceived roles, inhibitions and relate directly one to one with their children. It echoes TSElliot's view that a cultural role is only a formal outcome of fundamental motivations and rationale`. We will be better off looking for those fundamental rationale` instead of assuming roles and be mere consumers.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2007-08-20

The author understands the intricacies of modern, father-daughter relationships and helps a daughter to understand, and emotionally embrace, this person people call "father". The author takes a woman, who is desiring to have a relationship with her father, through an enlightening journey of discovery of her own feelings and thoughts, and those of her father. It is obvious that the author understands her subject matter and basic human nature. The insights that the author leads us to are nothing short of amazing! If you read this book and are unchanged, demand your money back and check with the morgue to see if you're still breathing.

5 out of 5 stars excellent with real data to back it up.......2004-06-06

This book is the most insightful, rewarding book I have read in years. Dr. Nielsen unfolds and unlocks real information in a format that you can grasp and apply. It should be a required read for every female, even if she has a good relationship with her father or her father has passed. Pure unlightenment and understanding ~ that is what you walk away with after reading this book. It was very, very helpful to understand more completely the demeaning and demoralizing of divorced fathers. I believe this is a real issue in today's world and she addresses it head on. I would love to see a book by this title from Dr. Nielsen. What a gift to the world that book would be! I hope to see Dr. Nielsen on Oprah and Dr. Phil promoting her book very soon.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Awesome.......2004-05-28

Taking time out to read this book has been a blessing to my life and so many of my sisters. We are single mothers who have been divorced and raising girls on our own. The importance of relationships with our daughters and their fathers is essential and Dr. Nielsen did a wonderful job making the interactions realistic and meaningful. I would recommend this book to all of my african american sisters who often times need alittle help from the fathers of their daughters. Thank you Dr. Neilsen for your caring enough to give us sisters a hand at mending and reintiating father-daughter relationships. I can't wait to read more!

5 out of 5 stars It's Never Too Late.......2004-05-18

A wonderful relationship with your father is truly one of life's greatest joys. But how can we find this if we don't already have it? Dr. Nielsen's book provides many practical and creative suggestions for doing just this. We did not choose our father or the life we had as a child. However, we can choose to change the way we interact with our dad once we are adults. Dr. Nielsen uses a variety of interesting techniques: short questionnairss to focus on specific problems; "Eye Opener" research summaries to provide perspective; and sample dialogues to help us get started talking with our dad. Dr. Nielsen's academic credentials give her the credibility to write this ground-breaking book. And her warm, encouraging voice and helpful ideas give us the courage to actually try to reconnect with our dad. I am recommending this book to all of my friends who are puzzled, angry, or disappointed with their father. It's never too early, or too late, to start.

An excellent addition to my growing Richard Whiteley collection, this book does not disappoint! I have used Mr. Whiteley?s strategies/thinking from his previous works to effectively shape my company?s customer experience model. While the principles in this new book have certainly helped me personally become more motivated/productive, I have begun to use the principles in LTWYW to shape a more positive internal employee culture, thus extending our productivity and enhancing our customer service experience. An excellent book with a clear purpose and applicability!

Life at the human resources salt mines has been transformed since reading Richard Whiteley's excellent motivational guide. He found new zest and enthusiasm in his career and so did I and his personal testimony is genuinely moving. "Watching the contestants actually getting excited being on my show used to give me a kick, but it soon palled. Slopping up this pre-primetime pap day-in-day-out was quite frankly doing my nut in and, though it may not have seemed that way, my ability to engage in on-screen anodyne banter was affected. I was in a rut. Career worries spilled out into my private life, and I wince when I think of all the drunken I-could-have-been-a-contender speeches I made to all those anonymous barflies. I'll be honest with you - I wanted Call My Bluff, and yes, I did once say that I wanted Robertson whacked." But Whiteley pulled himself back and the rest is history.

5 out of 5 stars Improve your current work situation.......2001-06-13

"Love the Work You're With" is about what you can do to improve your current work situation...no matter who you are or what your job is. It makes a strong case that virtually anyone who works can find more fulfillment in their current job situation than they are currently experiencing. The message isn't about not changing jobs. Rather it is about auditing your situation and finding out what you can do to improve it before you take such a step. The book has self-assessment diagnostics to help the reader determine where he/she stands on vital issues and also offers many exercises that support him/her in creating a strategy for change. The last chapter is specifically written for managers and leaders to help them create the kind of work environment the will help people who work for them to love their work.

Your job can be a prison or a palace. For most of us, work probably falls somewhere in between, but we usually don't acknowledge - or even realize - how much control we have in the matter. If you've ever wondered what you can do to improve the satisfaction and pleasure you get from work - without making a wrenching career change - this book is a wonderful place to start. I read a lot of self-help books (and occasionally even write them). This one is chock full of practical wisdom. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read Workplace Survival Guide.......2001-06-09

The dot-gone economy has taught millions that changing jobs is not the solution to success in work or life. Love The Work Your're With provides a road-map and tools to find personal and professional fulfillment at work. Each of the six steps in Whiteley's approach provide specific assessments, tools, and strategies to increase your level of engagement and energy at work. This book is highly readable, entertaining, inspiring, and filled with great examples. It is a must have self-help tool-kit for workers in today's complex work world. As a professional coach, I find this book to be essential for both my clients and their managers. If you've ever struggled with committment at work, read this book!

Book Description

Every moment of your life is like a page in a Where’s Waldo book. God is there, the Scriptures tell us—on every one of them. But the ease with which he may be found varies from one page to the next. God is closer than you think!

Two works of art help John Ortberg think about the presence of God. One is Michelangelo Buonarroti's brilliant painting of God and Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. God is close. His hand comes within a hair's breath of the hand of the man. It seems to say that God is closer than we think-he's here, now, today, accessible to all who will but "lift a finger." The second work of art is Martin Hanford's cartoon character Waldo. He is on every page of the Where's Waldo? books, but he can be difficult to find. In the same way, even though God is present on every page of our lives, he's often not easy to spot. In God Is Closer Than You Think, John Ortberg examines this frustrating paradox of the Christian life. "When it is so easy to 'see' God all around me (in trees, in birds, in nature) why is it so hard to feel his presence-especially when I need him most?" Ortberg helps readers discover the secret to living daily in the reality of God's most frequent promise in Scripture, "I will be with you."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-07-27

Ortberg is a master. Next to his book, If You Want To Walk On Water, You've Got To Get Out of the Boat, this was as good as it gets for relating to God in our limited human minds. Ortberg has tremendous way of taking ordinary stories, humor and life experiences and making them clear pictures of what Scripture communicates. Excellent, excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Where's Waldo?.......2006-11-10

I purchased this book for a small group setting and it fit the bill perfectly. Ortberg has a way of uncovering truth and in this book, encourages you to find Waldo, a God who wants to be part of your everyday life. I enjoyed it personally, was challenged by it and found the group setting enhanced my learning. I do look for God differently now since I've read the book. He is closer than we think.
I would have kept the orginial jacket cover. It focuses you to the subject matter much better.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-09-23

This book is a pretty decent book if you are interested in a mostly narrative style of discussion on Christian Living. Entertaining, well written, and clear, I would recommend it if you are looking for this type of book.

3 out of 5 stars Don't try so hard!.......2006-07-19

This is a very helpful little book on how to find God in your everyday life. The discussion of Martha & Mary is particularly astute. My only complaint about the book is that Ortberg tries way too hard to be funny and even hip. (This is the first book of his that I've read, so I don't know if he does this all the time or not; I suspect he does.) Humor should be natural, not forced, as it is in this book. His attempts to be hip are merely pathetic. For instance, he quotes the line "The jerk store called & they've run out of you" attributing it to a friend of his. He obviously has no clue it comes from a Seinfeld episode! Still & all, a good book, though, for a Christian at any level.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Convinced!.......2006-04-14

Upon a recommendation from my pastor, I picked this book up and I was not disappointed. John Ortberg writes with a Max Lucado approach. Taking everyday things and making us realize that they too have a place in our spritual walk. He challenges us to look for God in everyday occurences. His premise, as indicated by the title, is that God is more active in our everyday walk than we give Him credit for. In turn, he challenges us to do our part in praying that God bring His Kingdom to earth.

Book Description

The moving, true story of an everyday womanís conversations with Jesus and the deeply personal relationship she shares with him.

From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, Nicole Gausseron, a Catholic woman in France, recorded in her ìlittle notebookî the conversations she had with Jesus. Her chronicle of these talks does not include revelations or visions. Her story is simply a reporting of one womanís conversations with God. It shows, in simple yet breathtaking dialogues, that Jesus seeks a deeply personal relationship with those who believe in him. I Am with You Always, the final book in a three-book series, presents profoundly intimate encounters between Gausseron and Jesus that have never before been published.

5 out of 5 stars It will change your life.......2006-07-13

Nicole Gausseron has written the 3 most astonishing spiritual books I've ever read. While serving the down and out in a shelter in Chartres, France, the wife and mother encounters Jesus multiple times while in Mass or during adoration of the Eucharist. The holy visitations occur over a period of years and during many upheavals in the community she is leading; in addition her own personal life is shaken by the death of her beloved husband. However, the encounters she has with Jesus sustain her -- and have certainly had an enormous impact on my life as well. I urge anyone reading this to try this book. To read Jesus's words as spoken to a contemporary woman is quite a moving experience.

Book Description

I Am With You Always is a stunning collection of first-person accounts of everyday people who have had visitations from Jesus that have saved or transformed their lives.  From dramatic healing encounters during near-death experiences to gentle reminders to live a spiritual life, these encounters span a wide spectrum of experience.  Yet each seems to have one central purpose: Jesus appears to those whose lives need spiritual attention, growth, or healing.  In his enlightening commentary on these experiences, Dr. Sparrow describes the spiritual nature of these remarkable stories, discusses their legitimacy, and offers a dramatic new vision of life and faith. I Am With You Always is a thought-provoking and illuminating look into transformational revelation.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book about different people meeting Jesus Christ.......2001-11-05

I found this to be truly one of the best books I ever read.
My sister bought it for me, for my birthday, and I have read
it many many times. I highly recommend it to anyone. They are
really beautiful true stories of people meeting Jesus Christ
in real life. I'd give it 100 stars if I could!

5 out of 5 stars What A Find!.......2000-02-08

When I started this book I was a little disappointed. I had expected something like the "Chicken Soup" books. This book gave a very indepth study of Jesus encounters and I enjoyed it very much! Now I need a good book on how to meditate!

5 out of 5 stars Review for Online Journal for Practicing Preachers.......1998-11-13

George Gallup says one-third of all American adults 18 and over have had a "religious experience," which he defines as a "particularly powerful religious insight or awakening." He says this is true for quarter of the adults who do not go to church and 40% of those who do. I suspect Gallup's numbers may be low because people are not always willing to label their experiences as "religious," and many of us are reluctant to discuss them with others.

I Am With You Always is a collection of stories of Christ encounters by Scott Sparrow, a psychotherapist. They come from persons he counseled, others he met on the lecture circuit and his own personal experiences. Sparrow defines a Christ encounter as"... any experience in which a person perceives the presence of a being whom he or she identifies as Jesus or Christ." He summarizes the experiences reported and states his own outlook:

"Jesus can awaken us to a relationship with him. As the great physician, he can heal our bodies and our hearts. As taskmaster, he can confront and initiate us, encouraging us to remove obstacles to a closer relationship with him. As the consummate teacher, he can instruct and guide us into areas of new growth. And as the bridegroom, he can come to reassure us that we are, above all else, loved. [p. 223]"

Sparrow's work has little in common with the current glut of books about angels and channeling, or the stories TV evangelists tell. Most of his accounts are of dreams or experiences in meditation: few are about near-death experiences. They are experiences you, and I, and people we know, might have had: consistent with Emmanuel, God with us, the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us. There is surprise at the way Jesus looks in a dream: "Instead of the traditional Christ figure, he was wearing a gray pin-striped suit. He was bald-his face didn't look like the traditional Jesus face. Actually he resembled my uncle Ed. I knew unquestioningly, however, that it was Jesus." Later in the same dream the Jesus figure explains,". .. Of course, everyone would come to see me if I descended from the clouds in a white robe with angels attending; but that is not my purpose...Those who truly know me will recognize me in spirit--the rest will not know me. In this way I am gathering my true followers." I Am With You Always is sometimes inspiring, sometimes very moving. Mostly, however, it is affirming of our own encounters with the risen Lord. The ring of truth in these experiences of others has a grace which helps us evaluate and accept the ways in which Christ may be addressing you and me.

5 out of 5 stars Review for National Catholic Review, Nov. 17, 1995.......1998-11-13

They are clerks, homemakers, psychiatrists, ministers, construction workers and teachers. They are Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Buddhist, agnostic and atheists. They are married, single, divorced and remarried. They are women, men, boys and girls. They are healed, consoled, challenged, commissioned and most often simply affirmed. They are contemporary Americans who have tangibly experienced the risen Jesus Christ. He comes as a brilliant light emanating warmth and love. He comes as a voice communicating forgiveness, acceptance, confrontation or direction. He comes as a translucent, glowing face. He comes as a tall, bearded figure dressed in a white robe. He comes as a balding, middle-aged man, mildly overweight. He meets people in their dreams, in their homes, at their workplaces, at hospitals, at churches, in parks, forests and beaches. He meets people as they walk down the street. He meets them in their cars. In l Am With You Always, G. Scott Sparrow has compiled an extraordinary collection of peoples' firsthand accounts of their experiences of the risen Christ. Sparrow, a therapist who has had his own visions and dreams of Jesus, orga nizes and analyzes the accounts according to the "type" of Christ encounter that occurs: awakenings, physical healings, emotional healings, confrontations, initiations and instructions. Collected over five years, the stories included are mostly excerpts from letters sent to sparrow by individuals who had discovered that he was studying Christ encounters. The stories were often contributed by people who were telling their stories for the first time, as this was the first time they'd found someone they thought might believe them. It is tempting to be skeptical about this book. It is especially tempting to disbelieve sorne stories as wish fulfillment, such as when Christ comes to people dressed like the standard poster image of him: long brown hair, thin heard, glistening blue eyes and a classic Nordic profile. It is also tempting to disbelieve certain episodes in which Jesus appears in the present and is chiefly interested in exalting Mary, defending the Catholic church or lecturing about the moral decay of contemporary society. But such reports are rare. What is really surprising cans nd refreshing -- even convincing -- is that in nearly all the encounters presented (a) Jesus comes to people unbidden; (b) his primary object in most of his appearances is to affirm people and tell them that he loves them; and (c) he is remarkably uninterested in what many of our religious leaders would claim to be the important spiritual, moral issues of the day. An tinmarried woman deeply involved in a relationship encounters Christ, who tells her simply "I am with You always."The woman writes: I am not a holy person and I don't know why Christ came to me, except to tell me that I need not fear loneliness." Jesus does not reprimand the woman nor insist that she end her relationship. He promises to be with her no matter what she does. A man who has not practiced any religion for 30 years writes that during a funeral Mass, he heard the voice of Jesus saying, "Come, have supper with me." In another encounter, Jesus comes to a woman who has recently had an abortion. Now if this wasn't an opportunity for our lord to scold someone for their unchurchly behavior what is? Yet Jesus doesn't even speak to this woman; he enters her car as warm, brilliant, accepting light. The woman wrote, when he left, "I felt calm, restored, forgiven." Apparently Christ has not spent the past 2,000 years fretting over the broken rules. He seem so far more concerned about broken lives. In other words; Christ comes to people today much as he did in the incarnation as rendered in the four gospels of the New Testament. He comes to people without regard to their race, religion, social staus or moral track record. His overriding message to indviduals is that they are lavishly loved by God. One woman writes that the shattering message she received from Jesus was simply, "You are loved." Jesus does not slap people's wrists for their moral failures he simply expresses his love in away that transforms people. And they are transformed, though, sometimes secretly. Of the hundreds of experiences presented in the book, most are prefaced with the comment, "I have never told anyone about this" and are closed with the remark, "This experience has changed me forever." The changed lives are, perhaps, the strongest evidence of thc authenticity of the Christ encounters. The pleasnre of the experience is so strong that most people are reluctant for the vision to end. One person says, "I couldn't bear to have so much love taken from me." Is the Jesus presented in I Am With You Always the same Jesus who walked in Palestine in the first century and who appeared in the days following his death to the then and women who were his original disciples? That's a difficult question to answer. The similarities between the Christ of hundreds of independent 20th century witnesses and the Christ of the New Testament are, however, astonishing. Another qtiestion that must be asked: Is he with all of us always? Are waking and dreaming encounters with Jesus available to all of us. Sparrow suggests that the answer is "yes" and that many people are so close to Christ encounters that they never notice Jesus' presence. I Am With You Always is an exciting book for those who delight in hearing people express their own experiences of God in their own words. Most of the contributions have all the trademark ingredients of the gospel: strangeness, unorthodoxy, exhilaration, transformation and, most important, a focus not on the institutional church but on its central reality: the risen, living Jesus Christ.

This is the journey of a father and son drawn close by death and illness, then ripped apart because of one's refusal to be self-sustaining and the other's failing love. This journey deals with the needs of an elderly parent and how a son was forced to deal with his father. It is about love, understanding and being accepted. It was written during a confusing time with little or no support. These two are much alike in more ways than one, but self-pride and bitterness force them into opposite sides of life, leaving the two alone, wanting desperately to be back in each other's life. This is a story of My Last Years with Dad….
