Book Description

It's been more than a hundred years since the publication of the first Uncle Remus book, and it was in 1955 that all of the delightful and inimitable tales of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and Brer Wolf were gathered together in one volume. All of the animal tales from eight books are here, along with the illustrations which originally accompanied them.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful classic.......2007-06-08

I grew up listening to Brer Rabbit tales. Naturally, when I became a mother, I wanted to share these stories with my child as well. This book is excellent- with pages and pages of great African folktales. Some of the diction is a little difficult to read, but I think that adds to the authenticity. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic.......2007-05-21

The Uncle Remus tales were a favorite of mine when my grandfather told them to me and as I read them to my grandchildren, I can see they will be a favorite of theirs, too. As the characters develop, the children can see bits and pieces of their family and friends emerge. An American Classic.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Anthology.......2007-01-03

Nicely bound and printed with first edition illustrations. For perspective, I also recommend "Joel Chandler Harris: A Biography and Critical Study" by R. Bruce Bickley, Jr. (see my review).

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2006-08-16

This is a beautiful keepsake type edition of this book. Anyone who grew up reading Uncle Remus or having it read to them,as I did, would enjoy owning this wondeful book. What great memories it brings back!! Highly recommend this book for Uncle Remus lovers.

5 out of 5 stars a National and Southern TREASURE !.......2006-05-01

I could not disagree more with B. Tracy Hanson. My beloved grandpa of dear memory read these stories to me as a child on many a lazy summer afternoon in Florida. I think they are most appropriate for children, and a must for Southern children, black and white, because it is part of their Southern heritage and dialect. The stories and language are fascinating and captivating. I would lay there enthralled and enchanted, as my grandpa would read to me, each afternoon, during the summers I spent with him and my grandma. These stories and him reading them to me are some of my most treasured childhood memories!

Tracy, pictures!!?? The whole time my grandpa read me these stories, I never even knew there were pictures/drawings in the book. He just read, and I used my IMAGINATION. (Though, now that I do look at the original 1880's drawings, they are wonderful.) Language adapted!!!??? The language is a major element in making this anthology a treasure! JCH has preserved a Southern dialect, that is an integral part of the stories. These stories should be read out loud by a Southerner (who can handle the dialect, though even a Northerner could probably do a good job of "faking it", with some practice.) (Even though I speak proper, standard English, I can easily slip into this dialect, having heard it as a child.)

Oh, David, how sickeningly "politically correct". Violence?? What violence?? These are children's tales ...... Uncle Remus was telling them to a CHILD! Violence, ugh! You make it sound like the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". These stories are suitable for any child, unless you are a "bleeding-heart, pansy liberal".

5 out of 5 stars A rare American treasure that every American should own........1999-09-03

This book is one of America's greatest treasures!!! It has been a part of my household ever since I was a young girl. No American, black, white, or otherwise should be without this book and the knowledge of its contents. This book is an accurate depiction of how far we as African-Americans have come and, hopefully, an insight as to where we as an American culture are going. This book should never have gone out of print! I recommend that this book be used as a textbook in all elementary school, middle school, high school, and college history courses! America as a whole will never be able to mend the wounds if we do not learn about each other, acknowledge one another, learn to understand one another, and teach each other how to heal all of our wounds and correct the wrongs of the past. Ignorance is not an istinct or a natural trait, it is a parasitic sore that is handed down from generation to generation.

5 out of 5 stars A haunting yet true account of the horrors of Black hatred.......1999-04-12

This book is an accurate account of the horrors and stereotypes that surrounded Diaspora Africans in America. It is my hope that every African American read this bok, and treasure it as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Just as I remembered..........2007-10-10

I remember as a child many, many years ago listening to and reading these tales of trickery and hoodwinking with a great sense of fondness.
I purchased this book for my own son and have enjoyed reliving these old-fashioned stories and re-acquainting myself with these clever, witty and crafty characters. This book has been adapted to a shortened version retold in a simplified english language that all will understand. The illustrations are large, bold and very colourful. This is a truely wonderful book of short stories and tales that will bring us many smiles in the years to come.

This book will please grandparents when they curl up with their grandcildren and share this story.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-01-06

My four year old son absolutely loves this book. He really likes it when Brer Rabbit plays a trick on Brer Fox making him a sucker! The classic text is highlighted with excellent illustrations. This book is a joy.

1 out of 5 stars Not remotely close to the original.......2006-12-31

I love Uncle Remus, and I love the original writing. This book is so abridged that it totally loses the character of the stories. I wanted to give this book away, but didn't want to stick anyone else with it. My 4-year old likes it because it has big color pictures, and my husband likes it because he has trouble reading the original. For an abridged version that's easier to read, I highly recommend The Complete Tales by James Pinkney.

2 out of 5 stars something lost in rewriting?.......2006-12-26

My mother was very disappointed with this book. She felt that the stories were poorly rewritten from the original Joel Chandler Harris version. But maybe her memory of the original stories is imperfect.

    Book Description

This volume explores the unique sociocultural contexts of literacy development, values, and practices in African American communities. African Americans--young and old--are frequently the focus of public discourse about literacy. In a society that values a rather sophisticated level of literacy, they are among those who are most disadvantaged by low literacy achievement. Literacy in African American Communities contributes a fresh perspective by revealing how social history and cultural values converge to influence African Americans' literacy values and practices, acknowledging that literacy issues pertaining to this group are as unique and complex as this group's collective history.

Existing literature on literacy in African American communities is typically segmented by age or academic discipline. This fragmentation obscures the cyclical, life-span effects of this population's legacy of low literacy. In contrast, this book brings together in a single-source volume personal, historical, developmental, and cross-disciplinary vantage points to look at both developmental and adult literacy from the perspectives of education, linguistics, psychology, anthropology, and communication sciences and disorders. As a whole, it provides important evidence that the negative cycle of low literacy can be broken by drawing on the literacy experiences found within African American communities.

The closer a secret is kept, the more powerful the impact once it is finally revealed. Such is the case with author and activist J.L. King's intriguing look at the lives and lifestyles of black men who sleep with other men but do not consider themselves to be gay. These men live "on the down low," the "DL" for short, and their sexual activities have gained significant notice as the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in black women has skyrocketed, with the vast majority of cases coming from heterosexual sex. King is a veteran of the DL himself and his book serves partly as a social and psychological survey of the other men he has surveyed and partly as highly candid memoir. King was well regarded in his community, popular at his church, successful in his career, and married to a woman who had no idea that his secret life existed. But when she caught him in a lie and with another man, the marriage collapsed and King's long and painful path to self-awareness began. King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are. Among the more intriguing elements of On the Down Low are the peculiar approaches men on the DL have to the sexual act, seeking a strictly physical sexual relationship with their secret male partners while remaining in more traditional arrangements with women. Whether this discrepancy is a product of scrupulously guarded secrecy and shame or the natural preference of an understudied sexual identity is one of the numerous questions raised by this book. Though the infection statistics make the DL a huge public health issue, King is neither a sociologist nor a medical professional. And while a more clinical look at this issue would be welcome, King accomplished what he set out to do: provide light and insight into a world that so many have worked so hard to keep in the shadows. --John Moe

    Book Description

A bold exposé of the controversial secret that has potentially dire consequences in many African American communities

Delivering the first frank and thorough investigation of life “on the down low” (the DL), J. L. King exposes a closeted culture of sex between black men who lead “straight” lives. King explores his own past as a DL man, and the path that led him to let go of the lies and bring forth a message that can promote emotional healing and open discussions about relationships, sex, sexuality, and health in the black community.

Providing a long-overdue wake-up call, J. L. King bravely puts the spotlight on a topic that has until now remained dangerously taboo. Drawn from hundreds of interviews, statistics, and the author’s firsthand knowledge of DL behavior, On the Down Low reveals the warning signs African American women need to know. King also discusses the potential health consequences of having unprotected sex, as African American women represent an alarming 64 percent of new HIV infections. Volatile yet vital, On the Down Low is sure to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

I don't condone this lifestyle, but it is still going to exist, rather I like it or not. I am a happily married woman, but God forbid if something happens to my husband and I have to go back out here on the dating scene again. Thanks to J.L Kings book I will not be so easy to fall for men without investigating them first and picking up on signs. Even if I never have to worry about dating again , I can defintely educate my kids (both girls) about this topic. Don't try to keep topics like this from your kids thinking it wont affect them, because better you tell them, than they find out in a negative way and end up with Aids!

my dad was bisexual so I was hip to this lifestyle from the time I was born so I can relate to this yeah this lifestyle has been around for centuries some of the greatest men in history and literature are homo or bi such as hercules, julius caesar, alexander the great, king herod, pharaoh, achilles, zeus, elton john, david bowie yes homosexuality runs deep lots of entetatiners are on the downlow we know mase is bi so is puffy, missy elliot, da brat, beyonce, camron, kanye west, and plenty others tyra banks and plenty more don't worry everything will come out in the light already thwere are signs that these entertainers are closet homo's.

J.L. King hit the head on the nail with his freshman novel. Although down low brothers is nothing new to our community, they have never been talked about in as open a manner as this. On the Down Low lets you crawl into the life of a creeping man and witness the lies, deception and risk that are involved with such a lifestyle. In a deeply rooted homophobic community, many will shun this book. I applaud Mr. King's efforts. With HIV and AIDS running rampant in our community and DL brothers playing a role in an outrageous rate of infection for young black women, I think this book is more than worth the read. Although this text is heavily based on Mr. Kings own experience and some have complained about the quality of writing, I say give this book a chance. Don't focus on the writing, focus on the facts!

    1. What did you like best about this book?
I liked that the author took a risk and exposed a topic that was rarely discussed in the open before this book.

    2. What did you dislike about this book?
I didn't like that the main basis of this book surrounded the author's personal life. I feel that left air for the material to be biased and questionable.

    3. How can the author improve this book?
I think Mr. King should try to tighten and reign in his writing style.

4 out of 5 stars Unsure of Message He's Giving.......2007-07-17

I liked the book. I'm a guy and I was interested in knowing more about being on the DL. But I don't know exactly what the message J.L. King was trying to give. He didn't tell men NOT to be on the DL, he did warn females about them. I guess he just was the messenger. I don't think it will change any black male from having sex with another man if he wants to. It's not going to bring honesty. I can't imagine any male confessing prior to or before doing this. All women cannot insist that their men put on a condom before sex. So-things will probably remain the same. Bottom line???.... Know your partner and be prepared to accept the consequence if you come up HIV+. When I was young they called VD "the gift that keeps on giving", but AIDS is not a gift. We need better morals but people don't seem to want that either.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-05-07

Excellent book by an excellent writer. Having read several other books by Thomas Harris I think this one does please. Suspense, action, drama, and well crafted characters make for a great read.

3 out of 5 stars Well Written, But Tedious in Spots.......2007-04-07

BLACK SUNDAY is Thomas Harris' first novel, and is the only one that doesn't feature the character of Hannibal Lecter. This novel instead deals with a terrorist plot to blow up the Superbowl. Unfortunately, this book is not as exciting as the plot would suggest.

This is definitely not the best novel by Thomas Harris. I thought the character development was rather weak, largely due to Harris' decision not to have a central protagonist. He instead presents a large cast of characters in BLACK SUNDAY, and none are sufficiently developed enough for the reader to emphasize with any of them.

This book is also pretty tedious in spots. Harris obviously did a lot of research for this book, but he includes way too much irrelevant detail that doesn't move the story forward. BLACK SUNDAY therefore ends up being a rather slow paced read, a serious problem for any thriller.

There are moments of stylistic brilliance in BLACK SUNDAY, because Harris is a very fine writer. But it doesn't really add up to a very exciting story. If you've never read Harris before, my advice is to read the book he wrote after this one, RED DRAGON. That novel, in my opinion, is one of the finest thrillers ever written.

4 out of 5 stars Thomas Harris' first .......2007-03-18

Thomas Harris' first novel "Black Sunday", is, as all of his works are, very well written and told in an enticing and convincing way. The characters are three dimensional and realistic. You'll never question whether or not the thoughts or actions of the characters are plausible, and you'll not think that this or that is out of line. It has a sense of realism to it, that really makes it scary almost.

    Highly recommendable

    4 out of 5 stars Very Scary.......2007-03-11

It is hard to believe this book was written thirty years ago. This story of an American madman hooking up with Palestinian terrorists to blow up the Superbowl is very relevant to today. I just saw the movie Munich and so the terrorist organization Black September was fresh in my mind. Just like Munich, the Mossad is operating in this novel to hunt down Black September. Clues bring them to the US, and without the help of the Israelis, the incompetent American intelligence services would never have known that Palestinian terrorists were planning mass murder inside the US.

I found a few unbelievable elements to the story. Namely, how the Palestinian terrorist organization Black September allowed a beautiful female into its upper ranks. And furthermore, how she then fell for the Vietnam vet plotting to blow up the Superbowl. It is obvious that she was using him for murderous ends, but Harris leaves hints that she was beginning to fall for him.

The plot proceeds at a quick pace and is very tightly and well written. It does not take long to finish this book. Best part: the bad guy gives his ex-wife tickets to the Superbowl he was plotting to blow up.

    3 out of 5 stars Inspiring -- because it's not that great.......2007-02-15

For a writer, Thomas Harris' "Black Sunday" is an inspiration simply because it's not that great. Little hint of Hannibal in these pages. Which means that as Harris labored over his writing, sought and found plots and characters that inspired him, he dramatically improved. Which presumably means so can the rest of us.
Here, only two characters are decently developed, and they're both bad guys (Dahlia, Lander) which may not be that surprising, given that bad guys are frequently way more interesting than good guys.
Two characters the reader wants more of are significantly under-developed (Kabakov, Dr. Bauman) and some more marginal characters are somewhat overplayed. At times, it feels as though Harris was never quite sure who he wanted to focus on and who was the most interesting.
Because of the character issues, I really don't care a whole lot about what happens and it's a bit of a labor to read, especially as the writing is somewhat pedestrian and there is little suspense, things unfolding very predictably.
The premise was prophetic and the deadly contraption (a flying Claymore on steroids) fascinating. But the thing feels dated, the execution is mediocre and the best this reader was left with was a sense of encouragement: If Thomas Harris could start here and end up where he ended up, with the brilliance of Hannibal, what can the rest of us do?

    Book Description

Bolstered by national television exposure on Oprah and a cover story in the New York Times Magazine, the "down low"—a term used to refer to "straight" men who have sex with men—was thrust into the open in 2004. Keith Boykin, a former Clinton White House aide, goes beyond the hype with the first responsible, eye-opening look at the down low sensation. Unlike all previous accounts on the topic, Beyond the Down Low presents the DL not merely as a problem of gay and bisexual men living in the shadows, but more as an example of America's unwillingness to engage in critical but uncomfortable conversations about black sexuality. Boykin details how society has helped to create an environment where black gay and bisexual men feel compelled to lead double lives. Meanwhile, the dialogue that has taken place in the black community encourages an unhealthy battle of the sexes, ignores the complexity of the closet, demonizes bisexuality, disempowers women, and misdirects public resources and attention. This book is a timely and well researched answer to the question, "Why are so many black men on the DL?" More importantly, it is an essential tool to pry open the closet door in black America.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, Insightful, but Somewhat Repetitive........2007-02-23

I knew very little about the term "Down Low" and the ramifications it presents. After hearing about this book during a dinner conversation, I decided to give it a try with the goals of learning something new while expanding my cultural vision. Both came to fruition. I learned something new - primarily the backlog of information regarding the debates on DL and its impact, particularly on the Black community in the United States. I also learned that it is not a standardized term that explains the ambiguity that often shadows discussions on the issue.

What Boykin does well is present a number of facts that help someone understand what the current discussion is. What Boykin does not do well is present the facts in a manner that is conducive to a completely enjoyable read. I enjoyed the beginning of each chapter that were often peppered with personal anecdotes, but began to quickly lose interest mid-way through each section when presented with - what appeared to be - a super-saturated presentation of statistics. That would have been quite fine had the statistics not been repeated so often. I found a good portion of the book to be redundant.

All said, I this is a great primer on a timely issue. I would recommend it for anyone who has heard of the Down Low and is interested in learning more with facts.

    5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!!!!!.......2007-02-16

This book was a great book. I must say when I first got the book I was in dout thats it was about anything pozitive or helpful to the black community. But I must say I was very happy with this book. Keith Boykin really did alot of resaerch to put this book togeather. I think that any on that read the book (ON THE DOWN LOW)By J. L. King. Should read this book to get a full understand of things, and take away some of the fears, Lies and myths about HIV and the down low. It is a must read!!!! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Definately a better read than J.L. King's book.......2006-05-05

Instead of sensationalizing the issue, I felt Mr. Boykin was aiming to educate people about homosexuality in black America instead of entertaining the masses. Great book!

2 out of 5 stars Take it or leave it.......2005-07-20

I've just finished reading Boykin's book, "Beyond the Down Low." While I find it well written and his observations often on point, I come away from reading the final paragraph thinking, "So what?"

Really, Boykin has unearthed nothing "new" about sexuality or sexual identity as it has been played out since there have been men, women and the undecided.

Boykin's book gains much of its cachet because it is one of the few published books that addresses sexuality from the perspective of a gay black man. The very paucity of literature that focuses on the plight of gay black men in America alone makes Boykin's contribution invaluable, regardless of the quality of his prose. Ultimately, however, his work is forgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all black americans.......2005-06-29

I have always admired Keith Boykin as an author. He is very passionate in what he believes in and is not afraid to tell the TRUTH. Every black home in America should have this book.

    Book Description

In this book, artist and art historian Michael Harris investigates the role of visual representation in the construction of black identities, both real and imagined, in the United States. He focuses particularly on how African American artists have responded to--and even used--stereotypical images in their own works.

Harris shows how, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, racial stereotypes became the dominant mode through which African Americans were represented. These characterizations of blacks formed a substantial part of the foundation of white identity and social power. They also, Harris argues, seeped into African Americans' self-images and undermined their self-esteem.

Harris traces black artists' responses to racist imagery across two centuries, from early works by Henry O. Tanner and Archibald J. Motley Jr., in which African Americans are depicted with dignity, to contemporary works by Kara Walker and Michael Ray Charles, in which derogatory images are recycled to controversial effect. The work of these and other artists--such as John Biggers, Jeff Donaldson, Betye Saar, Juan Logan, and Camille Billops--reflects a wide range of perspectives. Examined together, they offer compelling insight into the profound psychological impact of visual stereotypes on the African American community.

    Book Description

Two hundred African American murals representing the breadth of the country's urban landscape--from New York to Los Angeles, Milwaukee to Atlanta—are gathered for the first time in this striking collection. Recounting a tradition of thirty years of mural art, from the creation in 1967 of Chicago's landmark "Wall of Respect " to the hip-hop renderings of the nineties, the book also introduces many new works--some published for the first time.

Walls of Heritage showcases the work of such renowned artists as Charles White, Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence, Hale Woodruff, and John Biggers, as well as the work of extraordinary muralists such as William Walker, Calvin Jones, Mitchell Caton, and Dewey Crumpler. The book also brings the voices of the muralists to the fore, including descriptive narratives by the artists themselves. The book includes artist biographies, an extensive state-by-state listing of the murals in the United States, and informative essays by art historians Floyd Coleman, Ph.D. and Michael Harris, Ph.D.

5 out of 5 stars Justice Done to Great Art.......2000-11-08

This is a treasure. It combines first-rate photography and exemplary scholarship with the splendid production values of a publisher reknowned for sumptuous printing. It is a work that recovers and preserves a rich, scattered and often perishable art. It should inspire young artists to new efforts.

"Walls" reaffirms the power, beauty and humanity of public art-- art in libraries, schools and along neighborhood streets, art readily accessible to people as they go about their daily life. It proclaims the values of their work, their community-involvement and traditions.

"Walls" demonstrates that Afro-Americans have their own independent tradition of mural art that emerged at the same time as but separate from the modern Mexican tradition. Although later it sometimes was influenced by Diego Rivera and his colleagues, it arose during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s inspired by African sources.

The creativity of Black murals is also noteworthy for providing continuity between the New Deal murals of the 1930s and the community-based art since the 1960s. When art on social themes was driven from public walls during the witch-hunts of the '50s, Black murals were being painted in Black colleges across the South, and the artists who gained experience here initiated the mural movement of the '60s when Black neighborhoods organized against racism. These Black artists and their untrained community assistants thereby created a movement that professional painters and local people of all races joined which continues to this day.

The horizontal format of "Walls" is especially fortunate in doing justice to paintings that have a like layout. The introductory essays by reknowned African-American art historians, the comments of the artists themselves alongside their works, their biographies at the end and a list of murals throughout the country enhance the value of this volume.

"Walls" is a major resource of US history and art and as strong proof that there is of the contribution of African-Americans to our shared culture.

5 out of 5 stars A Book for Current and Future Enjoyment.......2000-10-29

"Walls of Heritage / Walls of Pride," which I first browsed, then read, reread, and loved, has greatly added to my understanding of the background and context of African-American murals. The essays, the time chart, and the comments by the artists on their own works, in addition to the beauty of the paintings and the presentation, have added to my enthusiasm for and appreciation of this vibrant art form

In the past I have enjoyed visiting sites of public art. I now intend to carry this book with me as I travel, along with my maps and travel books, and when possible visit the murals shown in "Walls" seeing to what extent I believe the artist accomplished his goals.

I urge that you do the same, and you may come to find that your best travel time is spent outdoors viewing painted walls. And sometimes indoor walls and canvasses.

And later the book will be an impressive and useful addition to your library.
