Book Description

In the summer of 1909, the gruesome murder of nineteen-year-old Elsie Sigel sent shock waves through New York City and the nation at large. The young woman's strangled corpse was discovered inside a trunk in the midtown Manhattan apartment of her reputed former Sunday school student and lover, a Chinese man named Leon Ling.

Through the lens of this unsolved murder, Mary Ting Yi Lui offers a fascinating snapshot of social and sexual relations between Chinese and non-Chinese populations in turn-of-the-century New York City. Sigel's murder was more than a notorious crime, Lui contends. It was a clear signal that attempts to maintain geographical and social boundaries between the city's Chinese male and white female populations had failed.

When police discovered Sigel and Leon Ling's love letters, giving rise to the theory that Leon Ling killed his lover in a fit of jealous rage, this idea became even more embedded in the public consciousness. New Yorkers condemned the work of Chinese missions and eagerly participated in the massive national and international manhunt to locate the vanished Leon Ling.

Lui explores how the narratives of racial and sexual danger that arose from the Sigel murder revealed widespread concerns about interracial social and sexual mixing during the era. She also examines how they provoked far-reaching skepticism about regulatory efforts to limit the social and physical mobility of Chinese immigrants and white working-class and middle-class women.

Through her thorough re-examination of this notorious murder, Lui reveals in unprecedented detail how contemporary politics of race, gender, and sexuality shaped public responses to the presence of Chinese immigrants during the Chinese exclusion era.

Lui has written a wonderful book that uses a murder in New York as a means of examining the complexity of race in New York at the turn of the nineteenth century. Her research is first rate and the narrative she shapes is enthralling.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!!.......2003-01-17

Superb! Bill lifts the veil off of a very difficult subject and explains in plain English the things that every emergency responder in the world ought to know about autism.

Parents... Buy this book and force it into the hands of your local police/fire/rescue departments. The more you educate your community about autism, the less risk your autistic child will face in the instance of an emergency.

This is an invaluable resource...

I enjoyed the way the book presented ideas about the Ice Age and its inhabitants in a cartoon format. However, I was looking for a book that was appropraite for 1st graders to read independently this would be a little above them. I think 2nd and 3rd graders would enjoy this book and be able to understand the humor.

Book Description

After reading The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook, did you ever wonder what it s like to be struck by lightning? To run with the bulls in Pamplona? To ride the crushing swell of an avalanche? Extreme Encounters describes these adventures and 37 others with endlessly addictive you-are-there second-person narratives so you chill to the numbing effects of frostbite, you hear the 110-decibel roar of a grizzly bear, and you feel the stomach-lurching drop of an elevator freefall. Extreme Encounters is a moment-by-moment, blow-by-blow account of what happens to you physically, emotionally, and scientifically during life s most perilous experiences. Like a cross between The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook and Into Thin Air, these heart-racing stories take readers where few have gone before.

4 out of 5 stars Extreme Encounters.......2006-11-10

For those who have always dreamed of moments after seeing Jaws, and the like, this book is perfect. Describing all the goriest details in the second person view. I found this book extremely interesting, along as educational with all the scientific phenomena associated with each painful experience.

5 out of 5 stars Do you want to FEEL a quick thrill.......2006-06-08

This book was outstanding. The only complaint I have is that it wasn't longer. What I enjoyed most was that each story refers to the characters as YOU, and has enough scenerary information to give you a clear image in your head of where your suppossed to be, then BAM something crazy happens and your drowning in a lake in the middle of nowhere. I could literally taste the water in my mouth during that story. Then after the climax of each story the author throughly describes how each situation can kill you. He is very descriptive and interprets it in an easy to understand language. He must have done his homework to be able to describe those many different situations as he did. I loved this book, it is a quick fun and factual read for anybody at any age level.

3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2006-05-07

I thought the concept for the book a little more exciting than the book itself. The stories seemed too short, and a few end abruptly without much explanation as to what happened next. It seems only obvious that extreme encounters should have extreme details, but that's not the case here. Overall, I think 5th through 8th graders would appreciate this book most.

4 out of 5 stars A Quirky Reprise of Multifarious Demise.......2006-02-02

Quirky apropos of its publisher, Quirk Books, "Extreme Encounters" is formatted like one of those books to keep in the bathroom: the information is fascinating but not sufficiently in depth for anything more than morbid curiosity. Nevertheless, this is a fun little book to read, with anecdotes of demise as diverse as the effects of a shark attack to Civil War amputations. In a break from the subject matter (which mostly deal with death or dismemberment), author Greg Emmanuel also describes the experiences of sky diving and rocketing into space in a Gemini capsule.

Emmanuel is definitely on to something with "Extreme Encounters". We are drawn by our fears toward descriptions of what scares us the most, and the author does describe some of the neurological processes that govern our behavior while under life-threatening stress, but the book is a little haphazard and mixed-one can envision a series of books on this topic, more in depth, with the non-lethal, purely experiential anecdotes such as sky diving filling a book of their own.

A consistent theme in this book is our neurological responses to stress in life-threatening situations. Readers can get more information about these responses than Emmanuel offers with Laurence Gonzales' book "Deep Survival".

5 out of 5 stars So what DOES it feel to die?.......2005-06-01

So what does it feel like to die? According to author Greg Emmanuel, it all depends on how you go. 39 separate, horrible fates are chronicled in this book, and though not all of them end in death, they do all make your skin crawl. The categories include When Animals Attack, The Great Outdoors, Somebody Get a Doctor, Crime and Punishment, Everyday Mishaps, and Going to Extremes. Most of the scenarios only last for 2-3 pages which makes this a great book to pull out at parties and read aloud from, or take with you on vacation. The story style is conversational and informal, and the book length is a scant 175 pages, so it's a quick read all around.

Yes, the stories are creepy and gross, and at times they'll make you laugh though you might feel a little guilty for doing so. This is a novel and fun book.

5 out of 5 stars Learn the Truth about UFOs!.......2003-12-04

This is a great book if you don't believe in UFOs, and a horrible book if you want to believe in them. UFOs do exist. They are Undentified Flying Objects. This doesn't mean they must be aliens from another world. Are they aliens? Read this book and the truth will be obvious to you. This book does and excellent job of breaking through the fact and fiction on UFOs.

If you're afraid of aliens this book is also useful for you.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth your time.......2001-09-30

Any of the other reviewers who didn't like this book are morons. UFOs don't exist...get over it. A different species from thousands of light years away don't go zipping around in saucers and abduct people just for the heck of it. All you who REALLY want to find out about the UFO contriversy, read this book and everything else Klass has written. It's so refreshing to find a normal, logical person in the UFO contriversy and not some New Agey idiot.

    2 out of 5 stars A MUST READ REVIEW.......2000-01-21

Mr. Klass is a popular forerunner of the skeptics in our society regarding the "u.f.o. phenomenon." In this book, he attepts to express his understanding that human percerption is inherently biased and, therefore, cannot be relied upon for accurate data (with respect to the ufo "abductions"). I think that if you are really interested in the validity of abductees, a thorough understanding of sensation and perception psychology is a necessity. Then, you would be better educated to decide whether there is any credibility to these "abductions." Mr. Klass makes interesting points in this book which are worthy of your time; however, dismissing testimony of an alleged abductee because she was not attractive does raise serious doubts as to Mr. Klass' priorities and scientific methods. I say, buy a book on psychology instead.

    1 out of 5 stars Debunking At It's Finest.......1999-08-15

If you are interested in exploring the truth, you won't find it reading this book! Phil Klass is a government implant whose sole purpose is to debunk any and all facets of UFOLOGY, including The Abduction Phenomenon. Convinced that everything has a "prosaic" explanation, Klass deliberately and dutifly avoids those cases which remain unexplained or for that matter dismiss with any credulity what "alien abduction" may be, if in fact it is not happening. Don't waste your time!

4 out of 5 stars One of the few alien abduction books worth reading........1999-07-14

In this book, Philip Klass deals with the phenomenon of "alien abductions"--that is, the by-now widely known instances in which individuals, often with the aid of hypnosis, recall being taken by aliens aboard spacecraft and subjected to biological experiments. Klass deals thoroughly and convincingly with the hypnosis aspect of the phenomenon, and rightly points out that far from being a gateway to "repressed memories," the technique is actually very likely to elicit fabrications, and perhaps even to plant memories of events that never happened. Additional space is given to cases like that of Travis Walton, which Klass maintains was almost certainly a hoax. Some discussion is also made of the possibility that temporal lobe epilepsy may be responsible for the experiences described by some individuals.

Klass' explanations range from the strong to the very weak. His dissection of hypnosis and the likelihood that most abduction "researchers" are in fact guilty of planting false memories (inadvertently, it should be noted) is devastating. When he brings up TLE, however, he's really reaching. Klass was also notable for promoting ball lightning as an explanation for many UFO sightings, and the same conclusion can be drawn here: perhaps a few cases can be explained in this way, but likely not many. More common phenomena, such as sleep paralysis and waking dreams, would seem to be more appropriate for explication.

In any case, this book is typical Klass. It's an entertaining and easy read, with the caveat that Klass' attacks on abduction "researchers" and abductees are occasionally nasty (in the case of one individual, the possibility that she might be of interest to alien researchers is discounted, albeit apparently in jest, simply because she is physically unattractive). His logic goes awry once in a while, but overall it is difficult to come away from a reading of this book and fail to appreciate the level of delusion required to consider oneself an abduction researcher. Klass makes a convincing case that the efforts of Budd Hopkins, Whitley Strieber and others are actually harmful to the individuals they analyze and to the public at large. For anyone interested in alien abductions, this book should be required reading.

    Book Description

Based on over twenty years' research at Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico, this honest and respectful book takes us into the heart of one Zuni family and allows us to witness the world through its members' eyes. We see the joys of love, marriage, and childbirth and the tragedies of illness, alcoholism, and death. We rediscover the Southwestern landscape, its plants and wildlife, in light of traditional Zuni teachings. The Beautiful and the Dangerous was originally published in 1992, and is now available only from UNM Press.

"Literature as fine and sensitive as the storytelling of Matthiessen and Chatwin."--George E. Marcus, professor of anthropology, Rice University

"Deftly weaves together a range of life-story narratives, legends, myths, and male and female voices. . . . The writing sparkles with the visual acuity of a painter's eye, and it has a bold honesty about the experience of being in the field, achieving an integration of image and text that is totally new to ethnography."--Ruth Behar, professor of anthropology, University of Michigan

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Ethnographic Writing.......2005-01-10

This book is an example of the new attention ethnographers are paying to writing. Not only is it wonderfully written but it is an honest account of Zuni lives today. Tedlock went to the pueblo with her husband Dennis Tedlock (author of the "Popol Vuh" and the "Rabinal Achi") as a painter and after a number of visits and encouragement from Zuni women she decided to become an ethnographer. During her graduate education she also did work in Guatemala, see her classic book "Time and the Highland Maya." There is now a new book about to appear "The Woman in the Shaman's Body: Reclaiming the Feminine in Religion and Medicine." I've seen the advanced copy and it is fabulous! All these books are must reads for young documentary writers and spiritually alive women and men today!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, truthful writing.......2005-01-10

This is a beautifully written, honest, book about a young woman ethnographer coming of age. She first went to Zuni Pueblo as a young woman painter with her anthropologist husband and fell in love with the people and place. As a result she went on to get graduate degrees in Ethnomusicology and Anthropology herself and began working with the Maya in Guatemala. Since then she has written a book on women shamans worldwide: The Woman in the Shaman's Body. These books are worth the time to read.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Alternative Ethnography.......2001-09-07

I really enjoyed reading Tedlock's work. The writing reverses the notion of "participant observation" to the "observation of participation." Instead of a removed, monological account, we are offered a polyphony of voices, including the authors. In fact, the ethnography reads much like a novel; however, these are real people with real stories to tell. The text offers a rich and evocative account of the Zuni people and their experiences in the borderzone between the past and present. Tedlock's work and writing strategies were central to the writing of my own ethnographic account of a Southeastern Native American Tribe in search of a visible past--the Pee Dee of South Carolina (Title: Native Americans in the Carolina Borderlands: A Critical Ethnography, Carolinas Press, 2000). Tedlock's ethnography is a must read for those on the verge of engaging ethnography, no matter the methodological bent, and students and academics interested in Native American Studies, Cultural Studies, Cultural Anthropology, and alternative ethnography.

Dangerous Encounters: Genealogy and Ethnography explores the methodological and theoretical relationships between the epistemology and practices of ethnographic research and the epistemology and practices of Michel Foucault's genealogical method. Using examples from a number of disciplines, researchers who have attempted the demanding interface between ethnography and genealogy discuss their methods and ontological assumptions and rehearse their doubts and problems. This collection provides a grounded and useful introduction for those who would follow this dangerous research path.

          Book Description

What you don't know can hurt you! Do you feel safe in the woods? At the beach? In your backyard? In your home? In clear and precise language, this meticulously researched reference describes which creatures and plants can cause you harm - and when, why, and how to avoid them - in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Most valuable of all, you'll understand what medical risks they present and how best to respond to a hostile encounter. Bees, bears, sharks, porcupines, snakes, spiders, mosquitoes, toads, lice, poison ivy, ticks, fleas, elk, and more - if they're where you live, they're in this book. A finely illustrated field guide, a natural history narrative, and an outdoor emergency medical manual all rolled into one book, Dangerous Wildlife in the Mid-Atlantic provides regular doses of humor along with the serious advice. After all, part of dealing with potentially dangerous wildlife is getting over our instinctive fears, relaxing while remaining alert, and ultimately better understanding our natural world. Armed with this guide, you and your family will enjoy the natural world with informed confidence and peace of mind.
