Book Description

With an intelligence that scalds every pretense and surface, Lidia Yuknavitch's camera pans across subjects as varied as Keanu Reeves and Siberian prison laborers. She zooms in on drug addiction, crime, sex of all flavors, trauma, torture, rock and roll, and art, all the while revealing untried angles and alien shapes. She traces the inner lives of characters teetering on edges-death, birth, love, understanding-but never flinching at the spectacle of their violent descent. This collection represents a verbal cinematographer at her best as she captivates the reader with a prose style that is mesmerizing and fluid, deep and dangerous.

5 out of 5 stars Seriously Cool.......2006-01-11

Man, I don't find many women writers today critiquing culture with such finesse or courage--at the same time there is humor and artfulness and irony and beauty. The stories all take the reader to a place they either have never been, or try very hard not to think about, which is what books COULD be doing today but mostly don't.

I bought all of her books and they kicked my ass. Truly a joy to find.

3 out of 5 stars a mixed bag.......2004-06-24

This was my first FC2 book but as I am an experimental poet I wanted to approach it open mindedly. I was immediately disappointed with the first story, whose three simultaneous voices were more theoretical than pratical and seemed to be devoid of imagery or concrete anything. Then I really enjoyed a few of the things in this book -- the story of an addict and her lover, told in images, in fragments, in memories. A man's lost eye. Departure from the vernacular, but in a meaningful way. Then, once again, I find she is abstractin' around.

5 out of 5 stars We're watching ourselves, but can't see.......2004-03-16

The mindset of this author, as she panned across the realm of "so-called reality," was right on target. Looking at various instances, being seen as a production rather than a reality, is quite moving. She explores the question, "who are we?" Early on she mentions that we are cartoon versions of ourseleves. We create whatever we want. Life is merely a movie production in itself.
No matter what you read, if you do or not, this book has realizations that you have never explored this deeply. The author lets us know that we can be who we want, not literally, well almost. You start to analyze the way you present your- self to, for instance, a stranger, compared to how you act in front of a close friend. A person can perceive him or herself anyway that seems appropriate. They can also project an image that may not be consistent with their normal life. This is playing a part, merely acting within reality.
Within the book you get several perspectives, different eyes guide you through a world you may or may not recognize. No matter who you are, there is something to take from what has been written. The author pushes the question of why we do the things we do. Why do we submit to this, "order inside of chaos?"
In one of the chapters, a short entry titled "Phosphorescence," there is a line that reads, "She does not know what day it is and she knows what day it is precisely." This is an example of the author showing us what we need to look at life from different angles. Things aren't always as they seem. How we see it, isn't really how it is. Speculation cannot be grounded.
Overall, this book was a great read, excellent use of language. Her raw descriptions brought these ideas to a whole new level. The manner in which she tackled relations, love, sex, hate, drama, art, death, etc. was somewhat of an eye-opener As a reader, I could relate, and by the end I too was feeling her when she said that there is, "no distance between blindness and insight."

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away.......2003-05-10

I'm no sure what hits me most... not being a big fan of reading and all... but I was totally blown away by the language in Yuknavitch's book. I know that some critics can't think through three different voices on the same page, but I can, and I was amazed. Besides formalistic innovative moves, Yuknavitch was able to capture the esence of sex, violence, betraytal and love... love in sense of her man, her friends, her child not yet born... all of which are things I can relate to. I would suggest this book to everyone, whatever line of work you come from. There's something in it for you.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT???????????.......2006-01-17

I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about, but Dr. Gardner's Stories About The Real World are wonderful examples of real life problem-solving for kids. There's nothing about sex or sex with fathers. That's just ludicrous! I use these stories in social skills groups to help children cope with common problems. The kids remember the stories and actually use the ideas in their lives.

1 out of 5 stars Dr. Gardner's real world - all kids have sex with dads........1999-01-05

Dr. Richard Gardner has devised unique theories and research models to explain why in all normal families the children have sex with their fathers. It is only the abnormal family, those families with a crazy, maladjusted, sexually unresponsive mothers, do the children not have or enjoy sex with their fathers. Good reading for pedophiles.

Book Description

"For as long as I can remember, I have thought falling in love was like riding a bicycle in deep snow -- keeping your balance impossible, the visibility terrible, and the end result an eye-opening experience of one sort or another."

Celebrated New York Times columnist Lois Smith Brady is an unparalleled expert when it comes to getting the scoop on love. Having covered more than 300 weddings for her nationally syndicated column "Vows," she has made a career of uncovering the magical, intimate stories behind how true love develops -- her columns are full of the tiny personal details usually found only in locked diaries or heart-to-heart conversations. Interviewing couples on everything from their first date to who said "I love you" first to who does the dishes, Brady, time and again, has been given a rare, insider's view into the world of love and romance.

Now, in Love Lessons, Lois Smith Brady vividly brings to life her favorite love stories, capturing the unique spirit of twelve couples as she charts their sometimes bumpy, often funny, always poignant paths to true love. From the best friends who took fifteen years to fall in love to two college students who fell in love at first sight to a single mom who never expected to find love again, these remarkable, inspiring narratives offer insight into love's deepest mysteries -- how it feels when you find it, how it changes you, where to look for it. "The potential for love exists in corners, in the most unlikely as well as the most obvious places," Brady writes. With the light touch, wisdom, and warmth characteristic of her beloved "Vows" column, Brady's carefully selected stories illuminate unforgettable truths about love, teaching us, above all, that when it comes to romance, there is hope for everyone.

Filled with humor and light, these graceful, heartwarming tales are truly treasures to cherish. "These are stories with happy endings, all of them, and I write them down here as proof that love, optimism, guts, grace, perfect partners, and very good luck do exist. Love is not a fantasy experience, not the stuff of romance novels or fairy tales. It's as real as the subway, it comes around just as regularly, and, if you can just stick it out on the platform, you won't miss it."

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2001-10-23

I have never written a review, but just started reading this book and had to tell others how great it is. It makes you feel so cozy and happy. I've been through some tough times in love recently and it reminded me to persevere. I have been learning lessons from each story. The book is so beautifully written and the stories so wonderful. If you're having a hard time or want to remember why you got married in the first place, or are thinking about marriage, or just want to read some heartwarming love stories, this is the book for you. I loved it! Thank you Lois Smith Brady for writing it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love, Love, Loved - Love Lessons!.......2000-02-01

This book was excellent! Lois Smith Brady is really a treat to read. I would highly recommend the book as a gift for newly engaged couples or for married couples. Inspiring stories for singles - many hopeful stories about finding love in the most unusual places. All of the stories are funny, insightful and touching in some way!

5 out of 5 stars a magnificent hunch.......1999-09-20

I've been reading Brady's column in the NYT for the past decade it seems, and this book even surpasses her columns, which are pure delight. No one can write about love like Brady; no one even comes close to having her sense of humour about it, or her sense of the glorious magic that fills us when we are in love.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing perspective: successful relationships!.......1999-09-05

So much of what you read and hear about relationships is negative... "It nevers works out for anyone..." etc. This book was a refreshing change from the usual negativity. It left me with positive feelings about my chances of meeting someone special. Thank you Lois <3

5 out of 5 stars A lesson in all kinds of love.......1999-08-19

I've read many memoirs, but this book which intertwines the author's own romantic experiences, as well as those of her family -- and eleven other great stories -- is by far the best of this genre. After I finished the chapter on her parents' love story, I immediately called my mother, asking for details about how she fell in love with my dad. This book reminded me that love comes in so many forms, and it should be celebrated and passed on from one generation to the next.

      Book Description

In this finely crafted collection, acclaimed writer Elizabeth Cox examines the lives of common people and how they deal with life when uncommon things happen to them — how they accept their fate, sometimes choosing to move on, sometimes not. The stories, many set in the South, deal with questions of loyalty, betrayal, discovery, sexuality, death, birth, and the inner dynamics that drive the choices we make. The characters struggle with a complex mixture of kindness and violence, and their final choices reveal a flawed but finally compassionate humanity.

Elizabeth Cox has an extraordinary talent for inhabiting her characters and capturing place, sense, and time. This commanding group of stories will prove unforgettable.

      Download Description

In the South there are a lot of secrets, some of them unconscious. It's the tension these secrets create that makes this place ripe for storytelling. Growing up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Betsy Cox could look out the window of her bedroom and see across the Tennessee River, beyond Williams Island, and into the gliding series of mountains that form the eastern range of the Appalachians. The view so inspired her that it later became a metaphor for her life. "The river taught me how to move, the island taught me how to be alone, and the mountains taught me how to remain". Bargains in the Real World is a collection of stories that are driven by the effort to see behind the choices made by ordinary people. The characters struggle with a complex mixture of kindness and violence, and their decisions reveal a flawed but compassionate humanity. The stories explore the way the bargains we make affect our ability to become deeply, profoundly human.

From divorces about to enter into an arranged marriage to the teenaged poet who develops a relationship with a lonely widower, from singing teachers to housewives to white-collar businessmen, Chaudhuri deftly explores the juxtaposition of the new and old worlds in his native India. Here are stories as sweet and ironic as they are deft and revealing.

      2 out of 5 stars Slapdash.......2004-12-20

This book is subtitled "Stories and a Reminiscence." I'll go with the latter, but in all honesty, there is not, technically speaking, a single short story in the entire book. Instead, there are a lot of doodlings and undeveloped ideas for short stories. A couple of these "stories" are simplified retellings of Indian mythology (although they are incomprehensible without notes), but most of them are little formless vignettes about the author's childhood and youth. Once in a while there is a poetic image or a minor epiphany, but not one of these "stories" has a plot. Although this is a thin book, it was a struggle to finish it. I do not know what Mr. Chaudhuri's novels are like, but after this inept gathering of "stories," I would be loath to read them. He has talent, but mere talent is not enough. Good fiction writing needs craftsmanship and structure. There is very little evidence of either in this book.

2 out of 5 stars Bore yourself to death.......2004-08-07

I have seen bookshops in india selling this book at 80 % discount yet it turned out to be a boring flop. There is one story in this book about a lady who is an aspiring writer - I think it might be autobiographical. Get a life Mr Chaudhari

      4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2002-12-06

While reading this book I was strongly reminded of Chekhov, exhorting a writer to feel compassion down to his fingertips. The stories in "Real Time" amply demonstrate how this is a key to good writing.
Amit Chaudhuri is one of the most promising writers from India, in recent times. Four novels old, he has been often accused of writing full-length novels without even a semblance of a plot. At times his writing does feel like one has prepared a delightful gourmet meal without adding any salt.

Beautifully crafted sentences, his cadences are that of a poet. There does seem to be a presence of Gurudev Tagore, which pervades all his writings. (Me no Bong)
Correct me if I am wrong here but the writer does seem to have a fascination for DH Lawrence and Joyce, with a fair sprinkling of Proust.
Flawed though he might be, Chaudhuri still remains one of my favorite writers. There is something endearing about the human life that he describes in his books and I hope that as he matures as a writer we shall be treated to a remarkable repertoire of novels and short stories.
In his latest offering, "Real time", Chaudhuri has brought out a collection of his short stories. I, personally, would give this book a mixed review.
"Portrait of an Artist" is a charming character sketch of "Master Moshai", an image that lingers in your mind even after you have closed this book.
"White Lies", "Real Time" and "The Old Masters" are other works where Chaudhuri has his genius on full display.

However, Mr. Chaudhuri has failed miserably in at least two of his narratives, "Prelude to an Autobiography" and "The Great game". The poet and raconteur seems have fallen an easy prey to one of those seven deadly sins - Envy!!
The other stories in this collection seem to be fairly well written, but a bit in the grey zone. We have much more to expect from Amitda.

Not his magnum opus -but a good read all the same.

      4 out of 5 stars Fascinating glimpses.......2002-09-14

Amit Chaudhuri's latest work is called: Real Time: Stories and a Reminiscence. Within the pages of this (all too) slim volume, he perfectly captures many small samples of Indian middle class life. Most of the stories are not really so in the classical sense. Instead they are essentially snapshots from various parts of life all framed in "real time".

I loved all the vignettes very much. Amit Chaudhuri is very gifted at describing subtle facets of everyday life that might escape the rest of us. His descriptions of apartments either in Calcutta (adorned with white curtains with printed flowers) or Bombay are accurate enough to induce a warm sense of nostalgia.

My favorite stories in the collection are: "The Man from Khurda District" and "Beyond Translation." The former is a simply told story of a chowkidar and his life that revolves completely around his employer. Beyond Translation details the summer reading pastime that the author enjoyed along with his Bengali cousins.

Most of the people described in Chaudhuri's stories are solidly upper middle class if not downright rich. In a wonderfully fluid poem, E-Minor, at the end of the volume, the author informs us "I disowned our Mercedes-Benz, took the 106 bus, but remained unable to solve my lack of want."

Real Time demonstrates very ably, how good Amit Chaudhuri is at portraying a slice of Indian society that, in my opinion, is not adequately represented in modern Indian fiction.

WAKING UP ON THE TOILET by Aliya Fonseca is a book designed to help flush those things that hamper a good life right down the toilet. The book consists of several chapters, each by a different person, who had their eyes opened to the unhealthy things in their lives and they consequently flushed them right down the toilet. "She Called Me Beautiful" by Gerald Baily was very touching. After an abusive childhood, he finally discovered he did have good qualities and he should live up to them. "Watch Who You Trust" by Gary Perez tells of borrowing a car from a friend, only to get pulled over by the police because the car was stolen. Be careful how you choose your friends.

In addition to the individual stories, at the end of each section, there is a question and answer session and an exercise to help you find out what you need to flush down the toilet. All the stories are short, some only three sentences, and the exercises are helpful in searching out those things that need to be changed in your life. If you apply the lessons, it can be helpful.

Reviewed by Evelyn Duran for Reader Views (3/06)

Out of adversity springs forth hope and knowledge - that is the premise behind "Waking Up on the Toilet: Real Experiences about Appreciating Real Life" by Aliya Fonseca. The book is broken down into seven chapters, each dealing with a different emotional crossroad - family tribulations, love issues, searching for peace, recognition of friends, boundaries, reality and self introspection.

The stories included in the chapters veer from relationship issues to personal tribulations and each is attributed to a person that has voluntarily contributed to Ms. Fonseca's book.

Ms. Fonseca proceeds to give her readers some homework by asking questions regarding the chapter just read in her "Waking up Exercises" section. This exercise is geared towards helping you understand how the chapter just read might pertain to an issue in your life. By responding to the questions you will be able to find the answers to resolving an issue within you and enable you to flush out all the negative feelings associated with this problem in your life. You will then receive a list of feelings that you will acquire as a result of flushing away the negative emotions that have held you in their grip and rendered you helpless.

As simplistic as this may sound, it is usually the most-simple act that can be the most effective one. By enabling you to face your fears and anger you are putting a face and a name to an emotion that has been holding you back and the psychologically mental action of flushing it down the toilet releases you from the restraints of this negative feeling thus freeing you to experience a host of positive feelings. This will then supposedly bring about a feeling of "wholeness" and help you accept happiness.

As an introduction to getting in touch with your feelings, this is a decent beginner book but it does not really dig deep. I believe it can be used as a first step but by no means will it be sufficient to create a lasting feeling of contentment.

The stories in "Waking Up on the Toilet" were simply written and that is what made some of them powerful, but many were so weak that they did not create a lingering impression. I believe it would have been more effective if the author had put more of herself into the book instead of just relying on the stories.

My impression is that you should look elsewhere for inspiration and answers but as for Ms. Fonseca's book, well, you could do worse for a starting point.

1 out of 5 stars Going to sleep on the toliet.......2007-03-15

This book was a big disappointment. There is no depth or feeling to the events taking place in this book. They are way too short. Many of the stories are a single page consisting of large font with double spacing. A few a just three sentences. Most of the topics are quite mundane, such as a girl missing curfew and her father grounding her for a week. Who cares? How did this book get published?

1 out of 5 stars Throw this book in the toliet!.......2007-03-11

I was very disappointed in this book.
[...] recommended it when I ordered Post Secrets.
Waking Up on the Toilet is a terrible book.
I have no idea what "Waking Up on the Toilet" means (it was not defined in the book). The book it a collection of "Waking Up on the Toilet" stories.
It's a small book that's double-spaced so it looks like someone published their term paper.
There is no analysis or commentary on the "Waking Up on the Toilet" stories.
While a few stories were well-written, the majority of them did not make sense to me. There was no background or follow-up to the stories.
I guess I could write a story about what a bad day I had and get it published in a book.
My copy of this book woke up in my fireplace.

I got up this morning prayed, checked my emails and caller id and settled down to start my morning rituals. While writing out bills, I found Waking Up On The Toilet in a pile of books on the table awaiting my attention and decided to skim through to see what reading it would entail. That was at 6 o'clock this morning, it's now 7:39 a.m. and I've finished reading.

Waking Up On The Toilet is a random collection of other people's life experiences and how they've used it to relate to what has happened to them with their family's, love, peace, friendships, boundaries, realities and onward. After reading each chapter, you come across your turn where you too can reflect on the things discussed and how it played a part of your life and how you can work through it. Also, you get to do a waking up exercise in a journal, and by the end of the book you tally up all of your scores. Although the book ends, readers are encouraged to continue with their WAKING UP ON THE TOILET experiences in order to live a better life.

The title is a little hard to digest, but the concept of purging and reevaluating one self is a great idea. Some of the stories I really liked, the loss of a child, the caffeine addiction, and the fearful mother running for her life. Good and encouraging.

          Book Description

“Life Is But A Dream” is an intriguing compilation of insights learned during one man's life as he rowed down his stream on his first 50 years of his journey. Each of these seven short stories is filled with compelling observations on the definition of ones' individual reality. They are present in different, interesting, and entertaining plots and are woven around unique perspectives of what your reality is or might be.

“Life Is But A Dream” will leave you questioning, “Is mine, the only real reality? Do I create my own reality, the way I live, when I go to heaven, even the people in my life? What is real and what has been created by my own perception of my reality? What can I do to create the reality I really desire?”

Row, row, row, your boat gently down your stream and experience these seven compelling short stories that at times may seem all too real when compared with your vision of reality. Understanding these insights might allow for change or create the life, and maybe the afterlife, you want.
