The most honest, wildly enjoyable book written about motherhood is surely Anne Lamott's account of her son Sam's first year. A gifted writer and teacher, Lamott (Crooked Little Heart) is a single mother and ex-alcoholic with a pleasingly warped social circle and a remarkably tolerant religion to lean on. She responds to the changes, exhaustion, and love Sam brings with aplomb or outright insanity. The book rocks from hilarious to unbearably poignant when Sam's burgeoning life is played out against a very close friend's illness. No saccharine paean to becoming a parent, this touches on the rage and befuddlement that dog sweeter emotions during this sea change in one's life.
Book Description
It’s not like she’s the only woman to ever have a baby. At thirty-five. On her own. But Anne Lamott makes it all fresh in her now-classic account of how she and her son and numerous friends and neighbors and some strangers survived and thrived in that all important first year. From finding out that her baby is a boy (and getting used to the idea) to finding out that her best friend and greatest supporter Pam will die of cancer (and not getting used to that idea), with a generous amount of wit and faith (but very little piousness), Lamott narrates the great and small events that make up a woman’s life.

conservatives, beware.......2007-08-20
I just had my first baby (an amazing boy) & started reading this after he was born. I would not recommend for mothers, since the author drones on endlessly about her fears for her son. This only puts the same thoughts in the readers minds, things which never would have occurred to me before. I would also discourage anyone from reading this who is the slightest bit conservative. The author goes on and on about her hatred for Republicans and especially George Bush. She seems more interested in pushing a liberal agenda and teaching her son about fear and hatred than writing a good memoir. I found that part quite offensive, regardless of my political opinions. The only good thing I can say about this book is that it inspired me to write down my own observations, thoughts and feelings for my beloved baby boy, so that made it worthwhile.
So Real It Hurts: Just Like Parenting.......2007-08-16
You have an idea in your head of how Anne Lamott would be as a parent: so irreverent, so comical, so knowing and wise. Then Anne walks in and blows you away by living up to all your expectations: and destroying them!
Raw, honest, frustrating, hilarious, complicated -- this book is so dead-on about parenting it's amazing. And it's so Anne. Very simply Anne is one of the best writers currently working in English: read this even if you don't have kids.
Somehow even in the messiness (or because of it?) Anne Lamott's voice always brings us a harmony of hope. You just know, even in the worst of times, that this mother loves her son and is grateful for him.
Anne, the rest of us are grateful for you.

Healing.......2007-07-10
I actually bought this book for my daughter at the recommendation of a friend who has a PHD in Psychology. I had asked my friend for something as an antidote to "Drama of the Gifted Child" (nothing against the book - was just a hard time for my daughter to read it) and my friend suggested this book. My daughter enjoyed it so much. She kept calling a reading/reciting exerpts from the book - laughing and feeling understood were such a relief for her. My son'law even sent me an email "thank you" for how uplifting it was for her.
Laugh out loud funny........2007-06-26
This book is fantastic. Lamott says the things most mothers would be too ashamed and embarrassed to admit feeling. At the same time, she expresses the love and joy that come with motherhood in a way few of us could.
I thought this was a great book! Great for first-time mothers!.......2007-05-13
This book was given to me as a shower gift and I have since given it as a gift to new mothers numerous times. The humor really helped to alleviate anxiety with regard to motherhood, plus it was very poignant! Would definitely recommend it!

Customer Reviews:
pregnancy journal.......2007-09-17
I was hoping that the journal had more question in it. It has a lot of space to write your feelings and such but not a lot of lead in questions. The pictures are beautiful and the book is nicely bound. Easy to use and has nice thick writing paper.
Fantastic for mothers and fatehrs to be!!.......2007-08-08
I bought this book for my friend. I chose this book because of the indepth writing that the mother would be able to do. Most of the other books like this were only a few pages, this book had over 100. A mother and father could write all of their feelings and the emotional roller coaster that goes along with being pregnant. Overall, this is a great book. Also, the pictures are amazing.
I like it!.......2007-04-05
This book is great. The pictures are very beautiful and there is plenty of writing space to jot down how you're feeling and what you're thinking. A great keepsake for your baby, and could be passed down to a daughter (or in-law) when they are expecting so they can compare their feelings to yours.
My Pregnancy Journal by Anne Geddes.......2007-03-29
I purchased this journal for my daughter-in-law who is expecting her first baby. I was impressed with the journal and she loves it. She likes to "journal" anyway, so this was a perfect fit for her. The illustrations are outstanding. We were both very pleased.
Nice looking.......2006-11-04
I bought this book because it had the nicest pictures inside and did NOT have any tips or organizing anything like that, I already have pregnancy books for that. I like that there is a lot of space to write but I'd really like a blank book with nice pictures for me to write day to day thoughts in, without the book telling me what to write (like this does). I have not found anything that is not a regular plain journal so this works I guess.
Book Description
This keepsake journal makes it easy for grandparents to share the richness of their lives by drawing out recollections of travel and romance, family and friends, dreams and special places, and more. With photo pages at the beginning of each chapter and a pocket at the back to store letters, recipes, or other treasures, grandparents can now give grandchildren a gift that's everlasting.
Customer Reviews:
Very Creative.......2007-09-04
This book was great! It was full of questions that I would probably never think to ask my grandmother and the book is not cheap in any way. Aside from questions and answers there are envelopes inside the book and also slots at the end of each little chapter for pics. It's really a neat book and I think my grandmother will enjoy reliving old memories while filling in this book. It will be a good read for me someday as well. I wish I could have given one to my great grandmother before she starting forgetting things.
Nice book but not what I was looking for.......2007-02-14
I had gone back and forth trying to find the best book to have my parents fill out for my new daughter and I settled on this one. Most of the books are for one individual to fill out. I got confused with all the books I was looking at and purchased this one thinking that it was for both grandparents to fill out together however it is not. It is a nice book and the grandparents are going to try to fill it out jointly, however it is not easily set up for that.
Memories for My Grandchild.......2006-07-18
The book has tons of space to put family information and pictures.
the only problem is it will take me a year to complete the project!!! But when it is done it will be a wonderful keepsake for both my grandchildren. I bought on copy and when I saw how nice ist was I oreder another.
Add this book to your Baby Registry!.......2006-05-16
My wife and love this book. The book's thoughtful questions lead you effortlessly through the process of creating your own family documentary. Now that we're parents-to-be (4 more months and counting), we can't wait to give it to our own parents/soon-to-be grandparents. A must-have addition to every baby registry!
A perfect baby gift.......2005-07-23
I just got 2 copies of this for my friend's new baby... or, rather, for the baby to "give" her grandmothers. Most of the other gifts my she received are things that she will grow out of, but this is one she'll have forever. It's amazing how the stories have engaged her whole family! The book is beautiful - I'd recommend it to anyone lucky enough to have grandparents with them.
Book Description

When completed, "My Baby's Journal's" eight informative, fun sections will be a unique and wonderful memento of happy, funny, and appealing memories of your child's first year. This beautiful book is a perfect gift for all new parents.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Baby Journal.......2007-10-08
This baby journal is the best one out there! It's divided into 8 sections, with tabs so that it's easy to go to the section you want; and there are pages that are completely blank so that you can put pictures (or whatever you want), each section divider also has pockets on the other side, so that you can put things in it. There are beautiful photographed pictures, and the questions are short and simple, not like other journals that asks you the same question in three different ways. The book is very colorful, and all together just simply beautiful, and I can't believe what a bargain the price is, especially since there are so many more expensive ones out there, that are even half as nice as this one (and I should know, I've bought four so far, and ended up throwing all four of them out, after I realize I wasn't ever going to bother finishing them).
Beautiful book.......2007-07-03
I love this book. My baby is 9 months now, and I'm still filling it. I enjoy writing every milestone of him on it.
I even got a new one... for a gift or for a future baby.
THE BEST*****.......2007-06-22
I highly recommend My Baby's Journal. This book hold everything! Very detailed. I know that my daughter will enjoy reading about her milestones as well as mommy and daddy's thoughts before she was born. The description states that My Baby's Journal is spiral bound, but it is much nicer than described. My only regret is that I did not purchase earlier in my pregnancy.
Waaaay too much detail for new parents to fill in.......2007-06-06
I gave this book 2 stars because that's the "I don't like it" amount.
First of all, the yellow binding on the cover had smudges that could not be removed. So be aware that it might not look nice and new.
Secondly, I didn't realize how lengthy and detailed this book was until I got it... and I found it really excessive in that sense. Most new parents won't have the time, energy, or desire to fill in this book. But some will, of course. So if you find it important to keep a record of things like "My child first focused his eyes on _(date)__" and other minutiae, this might be the book for you. But if you're the type who just wants to enjoy the ride and record major life events, choose another -- like "My Life as a Baby," which is short and sweet.
WOW, I LOOOOVE this jornal!!.......2007-05-17
I just love this journal! I had a wonderful journal for my pregnancy and was hoping to find one for my daughter that was just as good. This journal ended up being even better than I had imagined!!! You will LOVE it! So many pages and questions that you don't even think of... it will be treasured by my daughter when she gets older!

Customer Reviews:
This is so cute.......2007-07-26
I was looking for something personal and not just information regarding what I should expect during my pregnancy. This book is so cute and is a great way to track your thoughts, feelings, events, and ups and downs of your pregnancy. After looking at many different journals, I liked this one the most. I highly recommend it.
Lots of writing!.......2007-06-03
Love this journal but be prepared for a lot of writing. It's pretty thick and each page has an inspiring topic to write about. Easy to get carried away writing but hard to find the time with a toddler at home! Of course, technically, you can write as much or as little as you want. If I could change one thing though I wish that there was a more organized section on appointments and number/lab data. There's a page here and there throughout the book but it's hard to put all your info together in this journal.
I loved this book..........2007-05-13
My husband bought me this book when I was pregnant with my son. The topics were great and anytime the writing mood would strike I could flip through and find a good one. There were topics about the pregnancy and family, but there were also a few that were not about pregnancy. I did not finish all of it when I was pregnant and I wish I would have...but I hope it is something my son will enjoy reading when he is older, and he will know how much he was loved before we even met him!
Could've been better.......2007-02-17
It's a nice little journal with pretty pictures. It might be better though, if it were spiral bound, so it's easier to write on the pages. I would also suggest more blank pages for random thoughts.
A little disappointed.......2007-02-07
Buy this if you want to write out full page essays - not jot down little experiences.

Customer Reviews:
Eyes and hearts open wide to God's creation!.......2007-08-03
We've only had this journal for a couple of weeks but it is already an essential part of our day. My 7-year old daughter truly cherishes this journal and loves to share it with others. She even sleeps with it tucked under her arm. When a question comes up about ocean life, spiders, moths or wildflowers, she shouts, "I know! I'll look in my journal." If the answer is not found there, you can be sure she will add it once she finds it in a field guide, encyclopedia or from one of her nature buddies at the Dept. of Natural Resources. I was afraid that this journal would be stiffling but it is perfect for my youngest daughter. Her older siblings use blank journals for their entries, as do I, but this is just perfect for the younger set and it is lovely to flip through.
Super!.......2007-06-28
We purchased this book for considerably more while visiting the Great Okefenokee Swamp. My 7 yr. old daughter has filled the pages in the months since. It is very informative and a good introduction to nature journaling.
We found the book about a month before embarking on a two-week journey from south-eastern Georgia to the Kitsap Peninsula of Washington. Along the way we visited many of the ecosystems noted in the book and my daughter was able to experience them in a much more robust way thanks in part to this book.
I highly recommend this book.
Fun, factual, and highly recommended for ages 8 to 14........2000-04-07
My Nature Journal with its fill-in worksheets may not be appropriate for library lending, but parents should consider this for kids with an affection for natural history: kids ages 8-14 will find it packed with suggestions for nature activities which encourage observation and note-taking skills. From exploring insects and butterflies to creating poetry and observing the sunset, this pairs facts and easy observational instructions with fun pages of fill-in guided activities in the outdoors. Colorful and encouraging with a very bright cover inviting participation.
Fabulous for kids, parents and teachers!.......1999-12-13
My Nature Journal is enthralling in its simple but complete approach to enjoying and learning about nature. For children of all ages either at home or at school, the book includes great nature activities for adults and children to do together. And My Nature Journal effortlessly combines reading, art, writing and science throughout the nature explorations. The book provides colorful but detailed illustrations of the five natural worlds: woodlands, meadows, ponds and streams,
seashore, and twilight. Highly recommended for parents, educators, homeschoolers and kids' clubs as a simple and enjoyable way to approach nature. From The Science Spiders Newsletter, January 2000.
Great for Big Kids too!.......1999-12-12
This is a wonderful journaling tool for children and families alike. As a homeschooler of an 10 year-old, I found this an excellent adjunct for field trips. There are over 40 activities that will have you exploring the woods, the meadows, wetlands, and things that go (?) in the night! The drawings are delightful! Rediscover the beauty of nature in a fun and informative format. From field notes to leaf rubbings, your budding naturalists will be eager to try the simple yet educational exercises. Mine did...and so did I!

Book Description
An agonizing dilemma plagues these brother-sister diarists. He is a Marine stationed in Vietnam. She is at home in America, far away from her brother's war zone, fighting for peace. As the marine writes in his journal about his experiences as a soldier, fighting an enemy he can't see, his siter seeks peace. In these gripping installments of DEAR AMERICA and MY NAME IS AMERICA, Ellen Emerson White captures the unique time period when America was at war both in a far-off place, and at home where adults and children alike marched in the streets for peace and freedo. Poignant and comlex, these two characters will give readers glimpse into perhaps the most tumultuous time in modern American history.

The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty.......2007-05-14
Not only did my 13 year old son love this book, but so did his father and I. My father was a Marine in the Vietnam War the same year that this is written about. It gave my family an insight into what my father went through and how proud we should all be of our soldiers. I'll be ordering more from this series.
My Name Is America the (Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty).......2007-04-01
The name of the book I read is My Name Is America the (Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty) . This book is about this man who is a round his late 20's. His name is Patrick Seamus. He is in the United States Marine Corps . This young man is fighting in the Khe Sanh ,Vietnam war ,in 1968. This book talks about how life was in the war of 1968. This book also talks about what they had to sacerfics for us. It also talks about how hard it is to leave there family. I can relate to how hard it must have been for him to be away from his family because my Dad is in the Navy and we have had separations like that. In his journal he also talks about the living conditions. They had to sleep in tents, hammocks, it was pretty unsanitary, they had little privacy , and the food was so awful . If it is as awful as they describe it I would be sick to my stomach. But out there I guess you learn to adapt.
I thought this book was very exciting ,and for all the people who like a good book that gives you a good cry .Or if your thinking about joining the U.S Marins I would say you should read this book . Most of the books I like are very detailed. I could swear that I was their I could see every detail .
I think part of the reason why I could picture it so well is the main character talks to you like your one of the guys .That helps a lot .plus during some of the book I felt like I was his best friend or his therapists. You can all ways tell how he feels. I really like that because I could sort of picture his face expressions.
Rating this book between 1 star and 5stars I give it 5 stars . The reasons I gave it this score is because the descriptions in the book paint a picture in your mind, the story itself is exiting, the characters are funny in the story ,and it was a perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day.
So if you like excitement , action, humor, mixed in with some sadness but happy at the same time this book is the book for you .So don't put reading this book at the bottom of your to do list, put it at the top of it .

Touching and hard to put down.......2007-02-19
I bought this book for my son who is 10 and interested in history. He has had a hard time finding books that will keep his interest. This book was not only interesting but informative and gave us a first hand look at what the Vietnam war was really like from this young soldiers perspective. I read much of the book and was touched by Patrick Seamus' story. It was hard to put down.
A Mighty Mouse In Vietnam.......2007-01-26
What could be worse than being stuck in Vietnam during Christmas? In The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty, Patrick is an eighteen year old Marine in Vietnam during 1968. He unfortunately, arrives in Vietnam on Christmas. Patrick (nicknamed Mighty Mouse by his squad) finds the war is not as easy as he thought it would be. Death is around every corner, and it's coming from not just the enemy, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), but also the dangerous terrain and wildlife.
One of the parts of this book I greatly enjoyed was the action and the suspense. In every chapter there is always action. An example of the action is, Patrick is out on patrol and sees movement off to his side. He quickly turns around and sees an object launch itself from a thick grove of bamboo. Thinking fast, as the object comes shooting out of the trees, he shoots it. As it turns out, the object was a huge cobra with its neck puffed out, its fangs extended, and the cobra had been aiming at one of Patrick's friends, Apollo. One example of the suspense is when Patrick is on another patrol. His squad stumbles upon an enemy fort, deep in the jungle. Fortunately, there is no enemy there, but Patrick does finds a pan of rice that is still hot.
The other part of this book I greatly enjoyed was the book was very realistic. Many sad things happen such as friends dying, and these were all real people and they all really did die. Also the way the book was written it makes you feel as if you're there.
During the tine I read this book, I could hardly put it down. I always wanted to know what was going to happen to Patrick and his friends. I loved this book and I know you will to.
A stark potrait of a young man's wartime experience.......2006-11-30
Eighteen-year-old Patrick Flaherty turns down college to join the Marines in Vietnam, quickly discovering that war is nothing like he imagined.
Throughout his tour, Patrick keeps a journal, chronicling the daily horrors, hunger, dirt and camaraderie with his fellow soldiers. All the while, he is unconsciously just biding his time until something terrible occurs, knowing it's the outcome for most of the soldiers...
If you enjoy this book, you might like the "Vietnam" series by the same author, only under her pen name Zack Emerson. There are a few tiny cross-overs into this book, and the overall topic and style are similar.

Pregnancy Calendar.......2007-05-09
I searched through many pregnancy calendars and found this one to be easy to use. The pictures are lovely and the stickers provided outlining significant events during the pregnancy were fun. There is a place to jot down information each month about your doctor's visit. There is space to also write-in any additional information you desire on the date. I highly recommend this product.
Anne Geddes does it again!.......2007-04-19
Another great product from Anne Geddes, who manages to capture such beauty. Sacred - Another great idea for baby showers (to complement Anne Geddes's products)
Good.......2007-01-09
Calendar is nice of very good quality and helpful hints
However I thought there would be more baby pictures in the calendar. So if you are looking for baby pictures, this is not a good calendar. Function of the calendar is great.
A Wonderful Gift.......2006-11-06
This beautiful calendar will make a very special gift for any mother-to-be. I purchased it for my daughter, whose 2 year struggle to get pregnant finally succeeded with the help of IVF. The Anne Geddes pictures are true to form and so beautifully unique.

Turtle Summer is an excellent book for teaching children about the great loggerhead turtles and the people who care about the turtles and help take care of them.
A spectacular book for outdoor education!.......2007-06-05
The perfect "nature awareness" book! The format of appearing like a scrapbook is captivating. I used this in my 4th grade classroom... much to my students' delight. They loved it! If you plan on going to the beach this summer, especially in the southeast, it is a must!
Ms. Monroe also has some adult novels that are terrific! The Beach House
A delightful idea - scrapbooking at the seashore!.......2007-05-23
Turtle Summer, a Journal for my Daughter
This book presents a charming idea for a parent and child: to keep a nature scrapbook. Mary Alice Monroe has written and illustrated this enchanting journal of a mother and daughter's summer surveillance for loggerhead sea turtles on their beach. While watching the turtle nests, they observe and sketch nature's other offerings at the seashore. Like a family photo album, it is an intimate book.
Photographer Barbara J. Bergwerf teamed with Mary Alice Monroe to add exceptional and informative photos, including one of Carolina from the previous Sylvan Dell book, Carolina's Story: Sea Turtle's Get Sick Too! This is a splendid mixture of photos, drawing, and text. Children, ages 4 - 9 will relate to this book and its activities, hopefully clamoring to create a similar journal with their siblings and parents.
Loggerhead Sea Turtles.......2007-05-10
Turtle Summer is an outstanding book which can be enjoyed by all ages, even though it is geared for children. The text is very accurate having been written by bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe and the pictures are something to behold. Barb Bergwerf is a superb photographer. Turtle Summer will be a book you will treasure and one you will want to give to all your friends who are interested in nature and our environment. It is a wonderful learning tool for children, too!
