The most honest, wildly enjoyable book written about motherhood is surely Anne Lamott's account of her son Sam's first year. A gifted writer and teacher, Lamott (Crooked Little Heart) is a single mother and ex-alcoholic with a pleasingly warped social circle and a remarkably tolerant religion to lean on. She responds to the changes, exhaustion, and love Sam brings with aplomb or outright insanity. The book rocks from hilarious to unbearably poignant when Sam's burgeoning life is played out against a very close friend's illness. No saccharine paean to becoming a parent, this touches on the rage and befuddlement that dog sweeter emotions during this sea change in one's life.
Book Description
It’s not like she’s the only woman to ever have a baby. At thirty-five. On her own. But Anne Lamott makes it all fresh in her now-classic account of how she and her son and numerous friends and neighbors and some strangers survived and thrived in that all important first year. From finding out that her baby is a boy (and getting used to the idea) to finding out that her best friend and greatest supporter Pam will die of cancer (and not getting used to that idea), with a generous amount of wit and faith (but very little piousness), Lamott narrates the great and small events that make up a woman’s life.

conservatives, beware.......2007-08-20
I just had my first baby (an amazing boy) & started reading this after he was born. I would not recommend for mothers, since the author drones on endlessly about her fears for her son. This only puts the same thoughts in the readers minds, things which never would have occurred to me before. I would also discourage anyone from reading this who is the slightest bit conservative. The author goes on and on about her hatred for Republicans and especially George Bush. She seems more interested in pushing a liberal agenda and teaching her son about fear and hatred than writing a good memoir. I found that part quite offensive, regardless of my political opinions. The only good thing I can say about this book is that it inspired me to write down my own observations, thoughts and feelings for my beloved baby boy, so that made it worthwhile.
So Real It Hurts: Just Like Parenting.......2007-08-16
You have an idea in your head of how Anne Lamott would be as a parent: so irreverent, so comical, so knowing and wise. Then Anne walks in and blows you away by living up to all your expectations: and destroying them!
Raw, honest, frustrating, hilarious, complicated -- this book is so dead-on about parenting it's amazing. And it's so Anne. Very simply Anne is one of the best writers currently working in English: read this even if you don't have kids.
Somehow even in the messiness (or because of it?) Anne Lamott's voice always brings us a harmony of hope. You just know, even in the worst of times, that this mother loves her son and is grateful for him.
Anne, the rest of us are grateful for you.

Healing.......2007-07-10
I actually bought this book for my daughter at the recommendation of a friend who has a PHD in Psychology. I had asked my friend for something as an antidote to "Drama of the Gifted Child" (nothing against the book - was just a hard time for my daughter to read it) and my friend suggested this book. My daughter enjoyed it so much. She kept calling a reading/reciting exerpts from the book - laughing and feeling understood were such a relief for her. My son'law even sent me an email "thank you" for how uplifting it was for her.
Laugh out loud funny........2007-06-26
This book is fantastic. Lamott says the things most mothers would be too ashamed and embarrassed to admit feeling. At the same time, she expresses the love and joy that come with motherhood in a way few of us could.
I thought this was a great book! Great for first-time mothers!.......2007-05-13
This book was given to me as a shower gift and I have since given it as a gift to new mothers numerous times. The humor really helped to alleviate anxiety with regard to motherhood, plus it was very poignant! Would definitely recommend it!
Book Description
A revealing look at the college freshman experience, from an insider's point of view
After fifteen years of teaching anthropology at a large university, Rebekah Nathan had become baffled by her own students. Their strange behavioreating meals at their desks, not completing reading assignments, remaining silent through class discussionsmade her feel as if she were dealing with a completely foreign culture. So Nathan decided to do what anthropologists do when confused by a different culture: Go live with them. She enrolled as a freshman, moved into the dorm, ate in the dining hall, and took a full load of courses. And she came to understand that being a student is a pretty difficult job, too. Her discoveries about contemporary undergraduate culture are surprising and her observations are invaluable, making My Freshman Year essential reading for students, parents, faculty, and anyone interested in educational policy.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-10-19
I was disappointed and found little insight.
I am a "returning student" (i.e. someone old enough to be the parent of a 20 year old) and learned more about today's college student just by talking to them during my first semester as a part-time commuter.
The author is a college professor to begin with; she lived in a dorm and studied full time and did not provide me with any new insights.
Required Reading for University Administration and Parents.......2007-10-09
Rebeka Nathan's anthropological account of campus life at the anonymous "AnyU" public university should be read by every professor, university administrator, or parent of a college student. As Nathan says, "Most students have no understanding of...how the university actually functions," while professors "have no idea what a dorm room looks like,...or the cost of books, tuition and housing." Her assessment of what's wrong (students are working more nowadays, and "diversity" is nothing more than a buzzword) are dead-on.
College freshman today!.......2007-09-18
Although this book was a mandatory assignment in a graduate course, it was a great read. The author's decision to transform from a professor to student was a brilliant idea to uncover the truths of college freshman. Although her methods raise some ethical flags, her discoveries of what goes on in the dorms, class and outside of class are amazingly true. Her discoveries at AnyU not only premise on this campus, but so many others.
In addition, so many professors today make unrealistic demands on college students. For once, a professor was able to understand what it is like to be a freshman and adapt to the needs of her students after this research. In addition, the author was able to express her ideas and those of others on academic integrity, meaningful courses, international students, learning and campus community.
The author's detailed descriptions of her personal experiences intrigued me every step of the way. I would definitely recommend anyone, student, parent or professor to read this book. Very insightful and productive research!
Things look better when you're there.......2007-07-16
Shows what an older person in her 50s can get out of the college atmosphere by registering as a real full-time student. This anthropologist learned how younger students behave in the dorms, in the hall discussions, and what they really think of their teachers and of one another. The new (but somewhat older freshman) did not reveal who she really was and went along with the students in what they did or said. Not until the very end does she tell who she is; surprise and understanding are the remarks she heard, but retributions.
Quite an open book, like Augustine's Confessions (almost) and Rousseau's of the same title. It's a good read no matter what your age/sex/education.
Clueless.......2007-07-03
I'm around the author's age (50) and I actually went back to college to study, not to spy on people. Just through casual conversations I know 100x more than I learned from this book. You know, she has revelations like today's students have cell phones instead of rotary dial phones, and some have been known to actually drink alcohol a day or two before reaching age 21. (I'm being sarcastic.)
She didn't seem to interact much with students. This is a dry, dull, uninteresting book with little useful information and is more like a community college paper than a serious study.
Book Description
He’s been called a journeyman. Even Paul wouldn’t dispute that classification. Regardless, Bill Simmons, ESPN.com’s “The Sports Guy,” has said of Paul Shirley, “We could finally have an answer to the question ‘What would it be like if one of our friends was an NBA player?”
There’s no denying that Paul Shirley is the closest thing pro basketball’s got to Odysseus. In Homeric fashion, he has logged time practically everywhere in the roundball universe, from six NBA cities to pro leagues in Spain and Greece to North America’s pro ball Siberia, the minor leagues. Hell, he’s even played in the real Siberia. And in Can I Keep My Jersey?, Shirley finally puts down roots long enough to deliver one of the great locker-room chronicles of the modern age.
With sharp elbows and an even sharper wit, Shirley–whose writings have been described as “wildly entertaining” by The Wall Street Journal–drops hilarious commentary, revealing which teams have the best cheerleaders (he’s spent many a time-out watching them ply their trade), why Christ is rapidly becoming every team’s “sixth man,” and even the best ways to get bloodstains out of your game uniform, using only an ordinary bar of soap and a hotel bathroom sink.
From sharing the court with Kobe and Shaq to perusing the food court at some mall in a bush-league burg; from taking pregame layups to getting laid out by a stray knee from an NBA power forward; from hopping a limo to the team’s charter jet to dashing to catch the van home from a B-league game in Tijuana, Shirley dishes on what it’s like to try to make it as a professional athlete. Can I Keep My Jersey? is a rollicking, thoughtful, even thought-provoking insider’s look at a pro baller’s life on the fringe. Like Jim Bouton’s Ball Four or John Feinstein’s A Season on the Brink, Shirley’s odyssey deserves to find a home on every sports fan’s bookshelf.

Great book, Sequel coming?.......2007-09-26
I was due for a break from fiction novels and figured this may do the trick.
Picked it up last week from the local library and have had a hard time putting it down.
The "diary" style may not be comfortable for some readers, but for road warriors to be able to digest bits at a time and large volumes during layovers it's perfect.
This book is not a basketball bible, but that's not its intent. Paul is a highly educated (engineer) guy from a small town in Kansas. His take on basketball teams, players and all the craziness that surrounds it, allows an average reader a glimpse of pro basketball life that is in no way on par with Kobe, Shaq, etc.
I went to DePaul and in my graduating class; the top two players did not crack the NBA and ended up playing oversees. I always wondered how my corporate life compared/contrasted to their basketball path. Paul's career, in reading the book is highly correlated to one of the alums (Stephen Howard), so maybe that's one of the reasons I found it so interesting to read.
While this book may not win many literary prizes, I will recommend it to as many people as possible for the simple fact that this book is a WINNER!
Can I Get My Money Back? 3 Days I'll Never Get Back in My Life.......2007-08-30
Based on the strong word of mouth this book has been receiving from the likes of SI's Rick Reilly, I anticipated something much better than this one note diatribe from Shirley. The act wears thin after the first chapter. We get the point. He's qualified to sit the bench on pro basketball teams because of his height and not his skill. He doesn't give any insights into the playing of the game, just that he hates Christians who play in the NBA. That rant gets old too. The "I'm smarter than the next guy, why is this happening to me angle" can only be repeated so many times. As a writer, he needs to sit the bench. Please spare us a sequel.
Can I Just Whine For 4 Years?.......2007-08-24
Previous reviewers have either liked this book a lot or find it too full of whining and complaining to like it very much at all. I am in the latter category. I am an avid sports fan and have read my share of insider and tell-all books written by athletes and close observers. This is far from the best of those and, in and for itself, not very funny or entertaining. Perhaps I reacted this way because I do not share Paul Shirley's dry sense of humor, but I think it's more likely that he just doesn't have much of interest to say. The 12th spot on the bench in the NBA or a starting position in Europe/Asia or the CBA is a vantage point from which all sorts of interesting observations and interpretations could be made. And Paul seems to be thoughtful and intelligent enough to make those observations and write about them. Unfortunately, in my humble opinion, he settles for low-brow humor, off-color racist commentary, and petty comments about most of the people he encounters in his travels. There's really nothing fresh or thought provoking about any of it. Most of Paul's material comes across as stream of consciousness reactions to a variety of potentially unique or interesting situations. My take on this is that Paul didn't really have a point to make or even want to analyze what he experienced; he just wanted to write a book about in which he tried to be funny and make some money. I say that this same kind of book is done much better elsewhere and is not really worth the time it takes to read it.
a book about basketball? Are you kidding me?.......2007-08-23
This is one of the most memorable, entertaining books I've read. Perhaps it is the fact that I've never before been much of a sports follower and have often scoffed at the idea of professional sports and so this was completely new territory. The author does a great job of leading us through this fascinating world. Since reading this, I've come to soften my whole stance and prejudices against professional sports and have read several other bios. It turns out that millions of people aren't wrong, and the sport actually IS interesting! Thanks, Paul, for the new perspective.
Paul Shirley.......2007-08-11
Chances are the readers of "Can I Keep My Jersey?" are one of two types:
1) People who are basketball fans in general and have never read Paul Shirley before.
2) Readers who got hooked on Paul Shirley via his NBA Blog, or via Bill Simmons' columns on ESPN's Page 2. If you found this book by way of either of these methods, I'm sure you'll love it.
If you're in group 1 and you have a smart-a, sarcastic, dry, witty, smart sense of humor, I think you'll like Paul's writing.
I loved hearing about his experiences in foreign countries most of all. Paul gives you a look at being a complete fish out of water in places most tourists never go. If you've traveled outside the US, you'll definitely relate to some of his uncomfortable, awkward stories.
You also get a first-hand tour of the dredges of professional basketball in the USA - the CBA and the ABA. Personally, having been to the wonderful world of Yakima, Washington, I found his CBA stories about his time there to be particularly entertaining.
Again, this book isn't so much about the NBA or famous basketball players, it's about Paul's travels across the world while doing his job. I get the idea that while Paul loves playing basketball, he may not enjoy the rigmarole of playing in 3rd-world countries; it sort of seems like a paycheck for him in some points. Also, after making it into the NBA, he really brought an everyman-view to the NBA lifestyle too.
I breezed through this book. If you're in his target demographic (I am) and would enjoy reading things like blogs, I would recommend it. If you're not though, I'm not so sure...

Fantastic!.......2007-10-02
This is so much better than any baby book! I hung this calendar right on my refrigerator and this would easily remind me to mark down milestones as my child grew from month to month. It's adorable! Just bought a second one for new baby!
Cute but wish it had a little more room/space to write in.......2007-09-22
I was looking for a keepsake book/calendar where I could record all of baby's firsts, journal some milestones, etc. With my first I received a free calendar from Nestle/Good Start that was awesome, but they do not have them available anymore. With this calendar, there are cute stickers and a little space for a 4x6 photo and some fill in the blanks ("I like...I don't like...I'm learning...etc.) each month. However, there just isn't enough room for me to put everything that I'd like down. The space for each of the days of the month is only about 1x1" square, and if you put a sticker in it, then there's hardly any room at all to write anything. Also, with the Nestle calendar, it was a spiral bound that had pockets each month, which was nice. It was made more like a book, instead of a wall calendar. I could put some cards, photos, etc. in that one, whereas this one, since I don't have it hanging up, just gets stuck in a drawer.
Needs a 13th Month.......2007-08-24
Enjoyed using the calendar, but I don't understand how there can be stickers for the baby's first day home and 1st birthday without 13 MONTHS! We used a color copier to make our own 13th month.
Baby calendar.......2007-07-15
The calendar is adorable! It could have been a little larger to fill the days with baby's accomplishments. Plus, it should have been a 13 month calendar because I started it the month my baby was born, but it doesn't go far enough for her first birthday. Overall image of calendar is very cute.
baby calendar.......2007-07-12
nice little baby gift for busy first or repeat moms. Not intimidating as a keepsake project...I'm going to keep a couple stashed away for unexpected gifts.

Great read.......2007-06-08
Owning Sibs and other breeds over the years I laughed till I had tears reading about Caesar. What a great read. Not that I recommend it for the bathroom reading but that is the only place my hubby will read. I walked past the door one day and he was laughing hysterically. I just knocked on the dog and asked "Caesar?" He replied "Lived that one before!"
After having lived with so many characters over the years it is easy to see that they really are true stories. If you have a dog lover in your life this should be in their stocking.

Dog Stories.......2007-05-13
A good book for people of all ages who love dogs. Although, like many of Gary Paulsen's books it is geared toward teens, this is a quick read for anyone. Laughs and tears throughout!
A Review by Bonnie.......2007-04-27
Reading this book, My Life in Dog Years was an OK book. You read all the different dogs' stories. What every dog's personality is, and what the dog does with him. Some stories are very interesting. It is an easy book to read. If you like reading about dogs, this book has all kinds of good stories.
A great book!.......2007-03-27
My Life in Dog Years, written by Gary Paulsen was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Gary Paulsen has an extremely different way of writing from other authors. I have read a couple of his other books. This was probably not his best, but it was well written. I would highly recommend it for any dog lover.

Great way to get siblings involved.......2007-10-14
I bought this for my 4 year old to fill out for he new baby brother. Some of the questions are hysterical and she loves filling out the information and tracing her feet and his feet. I'm sure both kids with treasure it when they're older to see what she thought of him when he was born.
A perfect book for the younger, new big brother/sister.......2007-07-14
I bought this book for my 3 year old and it is perfect for her age level. With its large text, humorous check lists, and simple art and observational activities, it is perfect for the younger, new big brother or sister (3-6 yrs). This book allows the child to compare themselves to the baby which shows them how special they are, and how much care the baby needs.
Love it!!!.......2007-07-09
This book is exactly what I was looking to get for my stepson. He is so excited about our new baby and this was just icing on the cake. He can't wait until the baby is born so he can start writing in his baby book just like me and Dad will in ours. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is either having another child or bringing a child into a blended family.
Great older sibling baby gift.......2007-05-21
This is a terrific "big brother" or "big sister" gift to help the older sibling feel like they're not losing something having just had a baby. It's a really good quality book and good activity for a parent to do with the older sibling.
great memories.......2007-05-18
This book is great for older siblings to fill out about the new baby. If they can't write yet you can also fill it out for them. Makes a great gift for the older child that might feel left out.

Children love it.......2007-10-09
We gave the book to our Grandaughter, who is a first-grade teacher, and the children absolutely loved it.
It was an excellent introduction to conservancy of species.
Teach the Children.......2007-08-24
Turtle Summer is an excellent book for teaching children about the great loggerhead turtles and the people who care about the turtles and help take care of them.
A spectacular book for outdoor education!.......2007-06-05
The perfect "nature awareness" book! The format of appearing like a scrapbook is captivating. I used this in my 4th grade classroom... much to my students' delight. They loved it! If you plan on going to the beach this summer, especially in the southeast, it is a must!
Ms. Monroe also has some adult novels that are terrific! The Beach House
A delightful idea - scrapbooking at the seashore!.......2007-05-23
Turtle Summer, a Journal for my Daughter
This book presents a charming idea for a parent and child: to keep a nature scrapbook. Mary Alice Monroe has written and illustrated this enchanting journal of a mother and daughter's summer surveillance for loggerhead sea turtles on their beach. While watching the turtle nests, they observe and sketch nature's other offerings at the seashore. Like a family photo album, it is an intimate book.
Photographer Barbara J. Bergwerf teamed with Mary Alice Monroe to add exceptional and informative photos, including one of Carolina from the previous Sylvan Dell book, Carolina's Story: Sea Turtle's Get Sick Too! This is a splendid mixture of photos, drawing, and text. Children, ages 4 - 9 will relate to this book and its activities, hopefully clamoring to create a similar journal with their siblings and parents.
Loggerhead Sea Turtles.......2007-05-10
Turtle Summer is an outstanding book which can be enjoyed by all ages, even though it is geared for children. The text is very accurate having been written by bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe and the pictures are something to behold. Barb Bergwerf is a superb photographer. Turtle Summer will be a book you will treasure and one you will want to give to all your friends who are interested in nature and our environment. It is a wonderful learning tool for children, too!

Customer Reviews:
know it all?.......2007-07-29
This book contains a great deal of commense sense information that repeats what you have probably already read in numerous other baby care books. Some of their advice also directly contradicts advice from our pediatrician. The tone of the book comes across as very "know it all" and I found that frustrating and condescending. Their advice is based on their experience as parents of 3 children and as parents, we all know that we all do things differently. Buy with caution, and follow the advice from your pediatrician first and foremost. Most of the rest of the advice in this book you could get by talking with your friends that have kids.
This book made my parenting very difficult.......2007-01-20
I bought this book while I was pregnant. Until I actually had the baby, this book was my favorite out of all, about twenty books, I've purchased because of simple guidelines, easy to read outline of what to do from changing diapers to putting child to sleep, and the schedule factor from day one to one year old. Life would be so wonderful if everything is by the schedule and a baby can follow it. My mistake was to let my husband read it. My baby is now little over three months old and very calm and alert. Of course, he cries when he's tired or hungry or his diaper is soiled like any other babies. My husband, now a firm believer of this book, gets very upset at my little one when he's off the schedule or cries more than this book implies. I also don't believe you ever need to let your baby cry to sleep and I'm still fighting with my husband about this issue. My baby gets very sweaty and his face turns bright red whenever he cries. I can not let him cry like that even for five minutes. He also changes constantly. He first slept through the night at six weeks and now, he wakes up once or twice at night because his nose is plugged or he didn't have good feeding at night. Sometimes he doesn't feel like eating much like us and might want to eat early the next time. This in turn creates a fight between me and my husband that he thinks I feed him all over the place and disrupting his schedule. I wish I never bought this book to begin with.
36 Things that might be good in your baby's first year........2006-04-21
The title of this book should be
"36 Things that might be good in your baby's first year, and 64 things that might not."
The hard part of reading this book is determining which ones are the good things and which ones are not. There are some that are just not good advice and it makes me wonder about all the other ones.
Also, it is important to know where the authors are coming from. Both authors had twins, and one had three babies within 12 months. That is just not standard, and it causes them to recommend things that are not best for parents of a single baby.
I have read about 10 books during this pregnancy and this one was my least favorite so far.
Short, to the point and right on the money.......2006-02-20
Excellent book - it covered important brand-new parenting topics and presented many good ideas that are referenced in many other reputable sources but without unnecessary wordiness. The book is small enough to be read in a few hours by other family members and friends.
Best New Parent Book.......2005-05-19
I ordered five books on a babies first year of life, and this is by far my favorite! In fact, my husband is even willing to read this one. Some of the others are more technical, but this one gets right to the point and makes it enjoyable, not taxing, to read. New parents should definatley get this book.

Not for everyone!.......2007-10-01
I was hoping to find some sensible suggestions for calming sinus inflammation associated with food intolerances. Unfortunately this author's approach to eliminating toxins from your system is more than I am willing to undertake. She advocates using chopsticks to examine your waste in order that you can make sure that you are effectively eliminating. I am not going to comb through my poop with chop sticks. I do not think that her advice is particularly practical for most folks. I regret having purchased this book and will take it to my local used bookseller asap.
SO many people need this book and don't even know it...yet !.......2007-09-23
I have the older version and it helped me to heal and go on to become a nutritionist and help others. When I couldn't find anyone who knew what was happening to me, thankfully I found this book. I highly recommend it as well as "Invisible Illness" if you want to learn about what is happening to so many people who are still clueless. Allopathic doctors don't know these facts, they exacerbate the symptoms because they refuse to accept/learn the cause, mostly because it involves nutrition instead of pharmaceuticals - she will tell you everything you need to know !
Don't hesitate if you know something just is not right, you must educate yourself. I'd love to go into details, but just get the book, it's all in there !

Book Description
Sean Condon has moved to Amsterdam. He got married, and he's unemployed (what's worse, so is his wife). Sean is back and funnier than ever, this time exploring the strange habits of the Dutch. He also keeps a watchful and wonderfully self-deprecating eye on the whole strange business of writing about yourself doing, well, nothing much, in this post-modern age. Sean's uncanny ability to find the absurd in everyday life misses nothing and My `Dam Life will strike a side-splitting chord with anyone who has ever been unemployed, been married or tried not to be deported from a foreign land.

Agonizingly self-absorbed.......2006-11-30
What a thoroughly irritating book. If you are seeking a useful perspective on Amsterdam, the Netherlands, or the Dutch, there is very nearly zero content of interest.
That Condon could live in one of the most interesting cities in Europe for 3 years, write a book about it and say so little about the place is astonishing - a true testament to his self absorption.
I found myself cringing at the relentless focus on his apparent worthlessness, handled without insight, and with lame attempts at humor that rarely work.
The only two interesting characters in the book, his wife and Keith, are barely covered. I found myself wishing to hear more about them, only from someone else.
One can only wish that someone would return his video games and take away his word processor.
Having said all that, I did give him 2 stars instead of 1 because of his few brief asides regarding the oddness of his occasional interactions with celebrities were insightful and interesting. It mirrored some of my own experiences and really captured the tone.
Writing is a job too.......2006-09-26
This book is hilarious! And somewhat tounge-in-cheek. Relax and enjoy it! (This should have been a 5-star review, alas I clicked on the wrong star and I'm not able to change it.) A couple of reviewers and an acquaintance of mine are quite bothered by the fact that in My Dam Life Condon is unemployed and that his poor wife has to make up for his "laziness" by "struggling to make ends meet." Sean Condon is an author! What good would he be in an office from 9-5 everyday? This isn't his first successful book and no doubt he's pulling in the dough just as well or better than his wife.
Amsterdamnation .......2006-03-17
Sean Condon gives us a precious gift; his own idleness. If he actually had something meaningful to do and an interesting life to write about, he'd be off doing it without so much as a see ya later.
But instead, he's forced, not altogether happily, to find meaning in the word soup of sound-bites, daily exchanges and media droppings that form the soundtrack of the inside of our heads in this day and age. And it's brilliant.
I mean, Sean and Sally land in the most quirky, sexy, kinky, interesting, liberated city in Europe. And you know what? The dialogue inside Sean's head, about the minutiae of everyday life, is kinkier, sexier, quirkier and more interesting than the Amsterdam it finds itself in.
So buy his book, but don't buy too many copies, because he might become rich and successful and then he'd have to find another schtick. Sean would turn into another Larry David, pretending (unconvincingly) that his fabulous life annoys him. So enjoy Condon's books, but let's try to keep him a failure, because it's just better that way for all concerned. Prospective readers can borrow my copy to preserve the bitter, penniless Sean Condon we love. OK?
My 'dam pathetic unemployed life.......2005-10-14
I found this book to be a complete waste of time; the only reason I even bothered to finish it was because I had some of these (seeded?) positive reviews lingering in my mind and I kept expecting it to get better.
Although the book does offer some insight into a certain sub-culture in the Netherlands (with a sprinkling of humor here and there), I should have taken the hint from some of the previous reviews before I ordered. As others have alluded, this is more of an autobiography than a book about the city or the culture. And a worthwhile autobiography it is not - I wasn't particularly impressed with the way the author chooses to live his life as a lazy unemployed slob while his wife struggles to make ends meet.
I feel generous giving it two stars - the second star appearing mainly for the catchy title and the sporadic bits of humor.
'Dam Right.......2005-02-16
Sean Condon has written a funny, realistic picture of what it is like to live in Amsterdam. I have lived in Amsterdam and all the things he talks about are right on the money. While living in Europe's most beautiful city can be difficult, painful and frustrating, it is all worthwile to call this great city home.
This book will give you a personal insight into the Dutch culture and people. I highly recommend this for expats or anyone that enjoys travel.
