This story begins in the cockpit of 734 Uniform Whiskey, a small palne he flew alone to the Arctic Ocean and the Inuit Village of Tuktoyaktuk. History at its very best!.......1999-04-18
"Crude Dreams" is a great read. Jack Roderick is a masterful storyteller. He provides us with an intriguing history of the oil industry in Alaska along with fascinating portraits of the unforgetable personalities who lived it. Any attempt to understand the oil business in Alaska is incomplete without this book. This is history at its very best.

A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for Midwest Book Review.......2006-01-06
I chose this book because I wanted to know more about sled dog racing. Wood does a wonderful job with photographs and text to tell the story of Dusty, a high schooler, and his sled dogs getting ready to race in the Jr. Iditarod in Alaska. This book is great for 8-12 year olds but adults will like it too.
A. D. Tarbox, author of ALREADY ASLEEP (October 2006)
Book Description
The bleak wilderness of America's 49th state challenges three women in different eras: Julie, a nurse, who must serve victims of a 1925 diphtheria epidemic; Beth, whose Canadian-born husband is killed in World War II; and Rita, who takes on the ultimate test of endurance, the Iditarod dog sled race. Each must surmount the obstacles of her life, and perhaps, with God's help, find true love as well. As a special bonus, 'Alaska' also includes Tracie Peterson's novella 'Christmas Dream.'
Customer Reviews:
Too much of the happy, sappy, goody-goody to be realistic........2007-08-31
I picked this book up because I'm going to Alaska and wanted to get myself excited for the trip; unfortunately, this book really didn't help much. Although it did get into the Iditarod, dog sledding, and blizzards, it really did not cover the culture of living in Alaska like I thought it would--and let's not even talk about the characters. As a Christian woman, some parts of the book (such as Rita Eriksson's fight to be independent of God) were definitely realistic; however, in the end it seemed as if every single character, even the less important ones, were model Christian citizens, and because of that these stories lost much of their [realistic] appeal.
A Magnificent Tale.......2002-11-15
I found this collection of novelas to be magnificent. I didn't want to put it down. At one point I acutally cried. The characters become so real to you that you are moved with their pain and elated in their victories. I also found them spiritually uplifting. Now I just wish I could go see the places that were so wonderfully discribed.
Alaska.......2001-01-19
I do not read alot but I could not put this book down. I live in Alaska and have been in the same place as the charcter in the book. I liked the spiritual content too. Differently better than the trashy love novels you can buy.
IDENTIFY WITH THE CHARACTERS.......2000-03-14
I liked the second story the best, because it really made me ask myself "What would I have done if I were in her situation? Would I have put God first? Would I have denied myself a strong opportunity like that because God said NO?" But I liked all four of them. They were realistic romance but not mushy or improper. A MUST-READ...YOU WON'T FORGET THIS BOOK AND (HOPEFULLY) THE LESSONS YOU LEARNED THROUGH PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF SUBMISSION TO GOD.
Good Book.......1999-12-02
This book seems to have all the love that the author has known in her heart. ..I really liked it and it made me think of my own life and loves. If you want to read a book that goes straight to your heart, read Stolen Moments by Barbara Jeanne Fisher. . .It is a beautiful story of unrequited love. . .for certain the love story of the nineties. I intended to give the book a quick read, but I got so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down. From the very beginning, I was fully caught up in the heart-wrenching account of Julie Hunter's battle with lupus and her growing love for Don Lipton. This love, in the face of Julie's impending death, makes for a story that covers the range of human emotions. The touches of humor are great, too, they add some nice contrast and lighten things a bit when emotions are running high. I've never read a book more deserving of being published. It has rare depth. Julie's story will remind your readers that life and love are precious and not to be taken for granted. It has had an impact on me, and for that I'm grateful. Stolen Moments is written with so much sensitivity that it made me want to cry. It is a spellbinder. What terrific writing. Barbara does have an exceptional gift! This book was edited by Lupus specialist Dr. Matt Morrow too, and has the latest information on that disease. ..A perfect gift for someone who started college late in life, fell in love too late in life, is living with any illness, or trying to understand a loved one who is. . .A gift to be cherished forever.

She Lives Her Dream .......2006-04-10
How many of us are able to say that we are living our dream? I believe Dee Dee Jonrowe is doing just that! My opinion of an athlete is not one who wins an important event, but the one who is consistent time after time, year in and year out. Dee Dee Jonrowe and her dogs exemplify this. She has a passion for her dogs, racing, and life. Her story is extraordinary, and I believe after reading this book, that she is as well. I hope she continues to race and promote her passion for this sport. Congratulations to Dee Dee Jonrowe(Miss Consistency)for your fourth place finish in the 2006 Iditarod!!!
A one-eye opener into suffering of dogs in Iditarod.......2005-11-17
Although the book is an eye opener about the Iditarod, Jonrowe should have told us more about the suffering the dogs endure. She does tell us that mushers sleep on their sled while the dogs race. And, during the race DeeDee says numerous accidents happen-- mushers hit trees and bounce off rocks. But she doesn't give enough details. The reader is never told that dogs die in the race, that they develop ulcers, lung damage, anemia, rupture discs, paralyis, pneumonia and viral diseases.
Great book, very inspiring..........2005-06-17
I have read this book, found it most inspiring, and learned so much from DeeDee Jonrowe.. This book has been an example in 'endurance' for me for every day living.... There should be more books like this one..DeeDee is a special person who loves her dogs. Once you open the cover, it's impossible to lay it down till you read the last page.... Worth reading, and learning from... how she cares for the dogs, loves them, as they ARE her best friends..And after traveling to Alaska and visiting in Denali Nat. Park, seeing the dogs there, I realized just how MUCH the dogs love to run. It's their life.. a life they love. There is so much to learn from the dogs and the 'mushers'. And this book takes you to the 'real experience' of running with the dogs. Quite inspiring. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know the truth, and how it 'really is'.. An excellent book.!!!
DeeDee Jonrowe's tale of her passion... sleddogs .......2005-06-17
I have had the pleasure of meeting DeeDee on many occasions and I can say without hesitation she is one of the most respected women in mushing and in her community. Her book is all about her passion, her sleddogs, her best friends, and her adventure with them... her love for these wonderful dogs, her committment to them, and to mushing. She is one of the most amazing, strong, honest and intelligent women I have ever met... read this book, it's worth much more than it's cost. You will feel as if you have just taken a trip down the Iditarod trail with your own team of amazing huskies... what a pleasure to be able to share this through DeeDee. I can't say enough about her or her book... just trust this and other reviews and don't miss this book...
A Testament to the Partnership Between a Musher and her Dogs.......2005-06-17
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the incredible relationship between mushers and their dogs. Many animal lovers dream of a job where you can really spend time with your pets, mushers live that every day. As a person interested in animal welfare, I am familiar with the concerns that have been raised about the Iditarod. However, I've actually seen the race myself, and it is crystal clear that what makes those dogs run is the love of the sport itself, and an incredible devotion to the "Lead Dog" who just happens to be human. It is also clear that a love for the dogs is the primary motivation for the mushers. The life of an Iditarod musher is not easy, in fact, it appears that the "dog's life" is the easy one here! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about sled dog racing or life in Alaska.

A very sweet, feel-good romance novel that's easily read within a couple of hours........2006-07-06
This book was written in 1985 and came across as somewhat dated, without the polish and skill Debbie Macomber has developed over the years, yet I still enjoyed it tremendously!! As Carly came to realize on page 126, the immediate attraction that sparked between them was spiritual rather than physical. In this way, the story reminded me of those from the "Love Inspired" series, featuring likable characters wounded by traumas of their past, who found peace and healing with each other. The breathtaking Alaskan setting added an interesting backdrop!

Description from the book back cover:
Alaskan Heat - Brand St. Clair, daredevil master of the Alaskan skies, was finally ready to settle down! Question was, how was this sexy widower going to prove that to Carly Grieves? It seemed Carly didn't want a man who'd loved before, even if that man was ready to love again. But the rugged pilot never ran from a challenge. And he wasn't about to run from Carly - the first woman in a long time who could tame his wild heart ...
Original "Alaska - Men Made in America" Book!.......2004-04-07
Borrowed Dreams: As the new assistant manager of an Alaskan freight company, Carly Grieves had a lot to get used to-especially with a man like Brand St. Clair around to keep her on her toes. The rugged daredevil pilot had an uncanny knack for unsettling her completely. But the memory of Brand's first wife was competition she just didn't need, and Carly had vowed never to take second best in anything. Yet how could they be just friends when his touch left her wanting so much more? Carly had always loved a challenge-but when it came to Brand, holding fast to her heart was going to take all the strength she had. And then some! This is a Silhouette Special Edition - realistic stories with heightened romantic tension. The longer stories, sophisticated style, greater sensual detail and variety that made "Special Editions" popular, are the same elements that will make you want to read book after book, in this series.

One Helpful Guide For Cruising The Inside Passage.......2006-12-26
This book is great for those who want to cruise to Alaska in a small boat or just enjoy cruising around islands in the Inside Passage. It is full of tips, lists, and local insight from someone that has made the trip several times. I was glad to know small boats can make the trip to Alaska if you are careful. Besides this book I suggest anyone planning to make a trip like this take the piloting classes offered by the United States Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary to learn more about using charts, and GPS.
Surprise, Surprise.......2006-02-03
I am disappointed that the editorial review did not indicate that this book is actually an evangelical platform for a born-again Christian. Mr. Petersen averages some discourse on his God and his faith about every 5 pages. There are 38 "God" citations in the index.
Had I known that the voyage was to serve as his "Sermon on the Inside Passage", I would not have purchased the book.
dream of a lifetime.......2000-12-31
I found Day By Day to be compelling reading as I share the same love and awe of nature as Mr. Petersen and his family. We enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver to Sitka, Juneau and Glacier Bay some years ago. The observations of these areas in the book were particularly interesting to me. To experience Glacier Bay cruising alone in a small boat was truly an awesome feat. The book describes the wild life viewed in detail indicating how to keep oneself safe while viewing bears, etc.
Tips on fishing these beautiful waters also were of interest. The catching of about every game fish, crabs, and digging clams was included in the book. This book is also a guide to great places to eat along the way, on land sights not to be missed, hot springs for bathing and best places to anchor.
To anyone owning a boat, the mechanical problems described and how they were corrected would be very helpful. Also, a novice would find invaluable the detailed descriptions of tides, times to avoid certain waters and highlights of the many inlets and coves he explored and which are named in the book.
There are numerous instances of protection and guidance as the result of his leaning on the almighty and trusting in God's care.
To read this book is a must for anyone contemplating cruising these waters and it would be a valuable companion on one's trip.

An Alaskan Review.......2001-01-14
I found this book a month ago and have shown it to most of my friends and leave it out for others to discover. It is a delight ... a photographic treasure. The images of places that I know and love are special to me. But so are the ones of yet-to-be found (by me) places. Natalie's work surely conjures up a dream. It is a book to be shared with everyone.
Absolutely stunning, a unique and beautiful look at Alaska........1998-11-30
Natalie Fobes makes us feel as if we are reviewing an old and treasured picture album. The technique could not be better for the subjects, which have often been seen under the bright light of the Alaskan summer sun or the gray of its long winters. Here you feel that someone put together a collection of personal photographs just for your viewing pleasure.

Growing Up.......2007-09-06
Sonny's Dream not only teaches children about bear activity in Alaska but also serves as a metaphor for growing up, gaining independence, and trusting one's instinct. Drawn in a soft soothing style she presents nature as vibrant and uncontaminated. The anthropomorphic qualities given to the bears does not hinder their feral nature providing children a lesson in empowerment.

Sonny's Dream
By Noriko Senshu
One is beguiled by the cover's artwork showing a Mama Grizzly holding her baby tightly in her arms. Sonny, her cub, young, snuggly and asleep suddenly he has a bad dream. In it, red, monster fish come swimming directly towards him with their menacing teeth showing. Scared, he issues a huge roar in his sleep that disburses the fish and wakes him up to find that the long winter is over and spring has arrived. Sonny's Mother spends the coming months teaching Sonny how to hunt squirrels and to fish for salmon. He becomes proficient at both and as the summer ends his Mother says that to be an adult grizzly he has to make one decision. While he is frolicking, she disappears leaving him alone. Sonny wonders what big decision he has to make? He finds a cave for the winter and settles down for a long sleep. The red monster fish return in a terrifyingly bad dream. Again his roar chased them away and when he awoke it was spring again. He hunted squirrel and fished for salmon and with a full belly, he dozed off for an afternoon nap. The red monster fish quickly returned in his dream, but now, all grown up, Sonny wasn't afraid. He ate them! A marvelous story for preschoolers on how to overcome their bad dreams told simply and with beautiful illustrations.

Sonny's Dream
Sonny is a young grizzly bear with a scary dream. When he awakens in the spring, his mother teaches him how to hunt for food - which includes those red, monster salmon fish he remembers from his dreams! While Sonny learns many things, as summer ends, his mother advises that a big lesson is coming his way. Slumbering deep inside his winter den, Sonny once again encounters the monster fish. Drawing upon his mother's teachings and his own strength, Sonny learns how to move past his fears, marching out into the world that spring to become "a master fisher in the Land of the Midnight Sun." This is a lovely story with bright, dreamy illustrations by Anchorage author and illustrator Noriko Senshu. Dedicated to "all friends who have bad dreams," both children and parents will enjoy the gentle wisdom of Sonny's tale.
