"The year I turned ninety, I wanted to give myself the gift of a night of wild love with an adolescent virgin." So begins Memories of My Melancholy Whores, and it becomes even more unlikely as the novel unfolds. This slim volume contains the story of the sad life of an unnamed, only slightly talented Colombian journalist and teacher, never married, never in love, living in the crumbling family manse. He calls Rosa Cabarcas, madame of the city's most successful brothel, to seek her assistance. Rosa tells him his wish is impossible--and then calls right back to say that she has found the perfect girl.
The protagonist says of himself: "I have never gone to bed with a woman I didn't pay ... by the time I was fifty there were 514 women with whom I had been at least once ... My public life, on the other hand, was lacking in interest: both parents dead, a bachelor without a future, a mediocre journalist ... and a favorite of caricaturists because of my exemplary ugliness."
The girl is 14 and works all day in a factory attaching buttons in order to provide for her family. Rosa gives her a combination of bromide and valerian to drink to calm her nerves, and when the prospective lover arrives, she is sound asleep. Now the story really begins. The nonagenarian is not a sex-starved adventurer; he is a tender voyeur. Throughout his 90th year, he continues to meet the girl and watch her sleep. He says, "This was something new for me. I was ignorant of the arts of seduction and had always chosen my brides for a night at random, more for their price than their charms, and we had made love without love, half-dressed most of the time and always in the dark, so we could imagine ourselves as better than we were ... That night I discovered the improbably pleasure of contemplating the body of a sleeping woman without the urgencies of desire or the obstacles of modesty."
Márquez's style never falters throughout this recounting of his life and his exploration of love, found at an unexpected time and place. The erstwhile lover is still capable of being surprised--and fulfilled. After an absence of ten years, it is a treat to have another parable from the master. --Valerie Ryan
Book Description
A New York Times Notable Book
On the eve of his ninetieth birthday a bachelor decides to give himself a wild night of love with a virgin. As is his habit–he has purchased hundreds of women–he asks a madam for her assistance. The fourteen-year-old girl who is procured for him is enchanting, but exhausted as she is from caring for siblings and her job sewing buttons, she can do little but sleep. Yet with this sleeping beauty at his side, it is he who awakens to a romance he has never known.
Tender, knowing, and slyly comic, Memories of My Melancholy Whores is an exquisite addition to the master’s work.

Finding love after nearly One Hundred Years of Solitude. .......2007-09-28
"The year I turned ninety, I wanted to give myself the gift of a night of wild love with an adolescent virgin."
Best known for One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, Gabriel Márquez's 2004 novella, Memories of My Melancholy Whores (Memorias de mis putas tristes), tells the poignant story of an unnamed, nonagenarian protagonist, a "mediocre" Colombian journalist, scholar, and lifelong bachelor "without a future," who discovers love for the first time in his life after living nearly One Hundred Years of Solitude. He asks a brothel owner, madame Rosa Cabarcas, to assist him in finding "the perfect girl" for him--an adolescent virgin--for his 90th birthday. The girl she finds is a weary, 14-year-old factory worker, willing to sell her virginity for five pesos just to help her family. After a lifetime of prostitutes (514 by age 50), the old man unexpectedly discovers "the improbable pleasure of contemplating the body of a sleeping woman without the urgencies of desire or the obstacles of modesty," while confronting his own mortality. Memories of My Melancholy Whores may be read as a life-affirming parable about finding love in the always-present face of death. I have given this book a four-star rating rather than five only when measured against the genius of One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera.

Old Age , Love and Eros in G-M's Memories. . . ........2007-09-11
If you loved García-Márquez's LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA you will love this slim little delightful novel by the master storyteller. CHOLERA, to my mind, is an encyclopedia of many varieties of erotic love. G-M's fascination with this powerful theme is always playful, irreverent, but joyfully uplifting.
In MEMORIES OF MY MELANCHOLY WHORES, there is a character who will remind readers of America Vicuña in CHOLERA. G-M is now "pacing the tower of old age" (Yeats), and his handling of the theme of aging is superb. American writers should learn from this master novelist how to write short, beautiful novels.
A customarily fine translation by Edith Grossman.
Memories of My Melancholy Whores .......2007-08-12
I picked this up at the Vegas airport while waiting for my flight. I am a huge fan of Marquez's style of painting vibrant pictures with the simplest of characters. And it has been a while (10 years) since Marquez's last work of fiction came out. So I had no hesitation in picking it up. Also the fact that it was a novella, made it an ideal candidate for flight reading.
First things first. The plot of this book may seem creepy to some. A 90 year old bachelor (not a virgin) deciding to have celebrate his birthday with an adolescent virgin is not exactly a picture of celestial romance. Some may even feel that it is in bad taste.
But I did manage to look beyond that aspect as I read the book.
The book reveals a central character who is fragile physically due to age and probably fragile of mind too. Time seems to have caused atleast a few fissures. This man (who is never named) has never loved, has a near-marriage and all the women he slept with were paid for their 'services'.
At this point I was finding it difficult to decide whether to sympathize with this man for whom death looms ahead or to just reject him outright as a womanizer. I was unable to do both. Probably because as a reader one's duty is not to judge a character but merely observe.
Well, there were shades of the Marquez that we are so familiar with. A poignancy expressed in a very subtle fashion, a hint of highly refined erotica and beautiful imagery.
But does that make a good book ? For me atleast it doesn't. It seemed a bit too laborious and at times pointless. Maybe it was meant to be that way. Finding love when you are at the doorsteps of death, may make your life seem pointless no matter how big your accomplishments are.
Maybe I am so accustomed to the beautiful tapestry of events in Marquez classics like the '100 years of solitude' ? Maybe that is why I felt a bit let down.
So my final verdict ? A good read for die hard Marquez fans. For someone starting out, I wouldn't recommend this as an appetizer for the feast which Marquez is capable of.
A Coming of Age Tale.......2007-08-02
Melancholy - maybe. Imaginative and fanciful - definitely. For those of us over 60, it's a true coming of age tale.
There's nothing here........2007-07-22
I have never written an Amazon review before, but I'm utterly incredulous that anyone could give this awful book five stars.
This book is terrible. This is just a bunch of meandering gibberish about a geriatric fool who falls in "love" with a child who he has no interaction with. It is utterly unbelievable, nonsensical and uninteresting.

A Real Treasure For Grandchildren.......2007-09-13
This book allows you to easily leave a legacy for grandchildren. Can include generic info such as geneology, as well as very personal memories/reflections and lots of space for those special pictures you hope would never be lost. It is truly a way to give a gift of love.
Wonderful gift!.......2007-07-11
Having a copy myself, I searched to find another for a newly 'grandmothered' friend- She loved it!
Grandmother Remembers.......2007-07-06
Great book and project for giving to your grandchildren. I have completed one book and plan on filling others. A nice gift for a new grandmother.
special keepsake. .......2007-05-13
My mom bought this book for my grandma to fill out for me when I was a baby. (1983) My grandma liked it so much that she bought six more over the years for my siblings and cousins. She added in as many photos as she could fit and some of the little pictures I drew for her when I was a kid. This book really means a lot to me.
Good Book.......2007-04-12
Good book. I order several for grandparents and great-grandparents. It is hard to find this kind of book. This is the best one I have found so far.

A Beloved Classic and It Still Works.......2007-09-28
I bought this book 5 years ago, and I still use it. This book, and all of Becky's sketch books, give you ideas for pages not reliant upon products, designs, or themes. I simply look for a page layout based on how many photos I have and their orientation. Turn the book 90 degrees and you have more options. Turn it upside down for even more options. Have an empty space to fill with an accent? Check out that section. Wondering how to emphasize your focal point photo? Look at frames.
The best thing about this book is that the sketches do not rely upon the more modern trend of oddly sized photos. All the photos in this book are 4 x 6 or thereabouts. No PhotoShop skills or computer equipment is necessary!
Absolutely worth every penny.
Excellent Resource for a new-intermediate scrapper!.......2007-09-20
Becky Higgins is a wealth of ideas for scrappers, and this book is just the thing I need when I'm trying to put together a layout. In the world of scrapbooking, trends come and go, but because these ideas are based onkey graphic design concepts (and all of Becky's stuff is like this)they can easily transfer over to new styles and techniques. If you are an experienced scrapper, then you've probably seen a lot of this stuff before and would benefit from getting her newest book, "Best of Becky Higgins Sketches." But I consider this book indispensable!
GREAT SCRAPBOOKERS HELPER.......2007-05-18
THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR WHEN YOU HAVE A CREATIVE BLOCK -- LOTS OF IDEAS AND YOU CAN EASILY ADAPT THEM TO FIT YOUR STYLE! TONS AND TONS OF GREAT STUFF
My Creative Companion.......2007-05-12
Great Book, I love it. Good source of information and ideas. I would recommend it to anyone. I plan to get her other books also. Thanks Becky Higgins.
Great Generic Ideas With No Photos to Distract.......2007-01-31
My favorite part about this book is that it isn't just a bunch of pages other people have created that you then get caught up in the photos and stories, forgetting why you originally went looking. For years, I'd gotten the scrap magazines, which, while beautiful and ususally inspiring, did not always help me. I usually thought I had to find a book with exactly the theme I was working on. The good news is that you don't, and this book has mock-ups of layouts, borders, etc. that are easily adaptable to any book you're working on. I think the only downside might be that there are so many new techniques that have come out in the five years since it was published, that it may not cover as much as some might like. Having said that, I'm willing to bet the #2 that just came out will pick those up perfectly! From my perspective, buying either book (or even both!) would be a good investment for anyone who's found themselves stuck creatively!

A wonderful book to read on Easter.......2007-04-10
Toby Knobel Fluek book is beautifully illustrated. In a simple way, Toby brings the reader into Jewish culture and Sabbath day preparation, Password celebration, and the foods and clothing of these celebrations. Toby focuses on the excitement of kitchen and food preparation: baking bread for the week, preparing Challah, important cooking pots for the passover, subtle humor, eggs, chicken, the potato and its many dishes, and potato pancake. Toby sister was a dress maker for rich patrons. Toby's uncle Mordche bought local eggs and sold them in the city and trudged through the mud all day. Ironing was a laborous task which included filling the iron with ambers from the fire and occassionally rekindling the ambers by waving the iron around about her head. Sabbath candles and pots were given as marriage gifts. The community had men of various religious roles. One role was the reader of the Talmud. The Charoes remind the Jews of their captivity and the milling of cement for bricks. Sedar reminded them of the haste they left their capativity, lying on their side as they recite prayers and sing songs. The clothes and shoes had to be cleaned and polished for the Sabbath. Everyone was dressed clean and proper for the Sabbath. The Sabbath was celebrated with a wonderful feast of delicious food prepared the prior day. On passover, a place for Elijah set, facing East, and the door opened. The Elijah stories excited the imagination of the children. The did not go without candles and pototes were used to hold the candles for those that could not afford an Minohora. Women washed and carried water, plucked chicken feathers in exchange for delcious food. Aaron must wait to marry his love until her older sister marries. The family is imprisoned in a Polish Ghetto. Gentiles sell food to the Jews through the fence at exorbit prices. The polices beat people selling at the fence. Food rationing increases starvation. 10s of thousands of Jews die before concentration camp and survivors eventually deported to the camps. Toby and her mother escape, march behind retreating Russians. The scene reminds me of Ruth and Naomi of the old testament bravely walking as tracers whistle over their heads. Toby and her mother escapes concentration camp and are certain other family members did not survive. PK provides a place for clothes, a hot meal, and sense of civilization. A wonderful book to read at Easter. An amazing story of human courage, determination, and faith in their God. A history of incredible contrasts: joy and sorrow, marriage and death, and faith and despair.
A personal "scrapbook" of memories told through art.......2005-08-09
This little book is a real gem of Jewish history, told through one woman's art. The paintings and sketches are arranged in chronological order, with personal explanations of each work. The result is like a scrapbook. Whereas most people today would have an album of photographs, Toby Fluek lost everything in the Holocaust, and was forced to carry her memories in her mind. Years later, she committed them to paper and canvas and now shares them in this book.
Interestingly, her family lived on a farm. One does not usually think of Eastern European Jews as farmers, but, in fact, there were Jews who worked the land. (One of my gentile Polish neighbors here in Minnesota told me that the Jews in his village always had the best vegetables!) While it is true that there were restrictions against Jews owning land, it is also true that there were exceptions to the rules. Toby's father's family had been on this farm for generations. It was this aspect that led me to purchase the book, because I, too, live and work on the land.
"We led a primitive life," she writes, "but we were a close-knit family." The "primitive" side of life is illustrated in her excellent still lifes, which portray arrangements of the common objects used for the Sabbath, festivals, and everyday activities. A basket of eggs for Passover, candles for the Sabbath, a prayer shawl on the table. Meat was served only on the Sabbath or when her father had an animal slaughtered. (Even then, he sold the best cuts of meat.) On weekdays they ate lots of potatoes, beans, and vegetables -- all beautifully painted here. Pots and dishes were passed down from mother to daughter, and nothing was ever discarded. One still life shows a well-worn set of Passover pots stored in a niche in the wall. Another painting is of her mother working in the farmhouse kitchen. She in kneading a week's worth of bread dough in a large wooden tub.
As the story unfolds, we learn that Toby eventually lost everything to the Nazi occupation. This, too, is illustrated through her paintings and drawings. The style here is darker, more ominous. Not something I would hang on my wall (the burning hospital, with the people still in it, is utterly horrifying in its simplicity) but essential to the telling of her story. She shows us Yom Kippur in the forest, hiding outdoors in the rain, crouching in a cellar and hanging her bread on a string to keep the mice from eating it at night. Her father was shot by the Nazis, her brother captured and taken away, presumably to his death. Through it all, her will to live was strong and she survived.
The collection of paintings (94 in all) continues through the liberation of Poland, being a displaced person begging for food, finding a job in a Russian military bakery (where the soldiers looked the other way so she could steal bread to take home). In 1949 she was married and moved to New York, where she lives today. The world she once knew is gone, but the memory lives on in her artwork. The last painting, "Am Yisrael Chai" (The People of Israel Live! shows Jews parying at the Western Wall in freedom.

Customer Reviews:
pregnancy journal.......2007-09-17
I was hoping that the journal had more question in it. It has a lot of space to write your feelings and such but not a lot of lead in questions. The pictures are beautiful and the book is nicely bound. Easy to use and has nice thick writing paper.
Fantastic for mothers and fatehrs to be!!.......2007-08-08
I bought this book for my friend. I chose this book because of the indepth writing that the mother would be able to do. Most of the other books like this were only a few pages, this book had over 100. A mother and father could write all of their feelings and the emotional roller coaster that goes along with being pregnant. Overall, this is a great book. Also, the pictures are amazing.
I like it!.......2007-04-05
This book is great. The pictures are very beautiful and there is plenty of writing space to jot down how you're feeling and what you're thinking. A great keepsake for your baby, and could be passed down to a daughter (or in-law) when they are expecting so they can compare their feelings to yours.
My Pregnancy Journal by Anne Geddes.......2007-03-29
I purchased this journal for my daughter-in-law who is expecting her first baby. I was impressed with the journal and she loves it. She likes to "journal" anyway, so this was a perfect fit for her. The illustrations are outstanding. We were both very pleased.
Nice looking.......2006-11-04
I bought this book because it had the nicest pictures inside and did NOT have any tips or organizing anything like that, I already have pregnancy books for that. I like that there is a lot of space to write but I'd really like a blank book with nice pictures for me to write day to day thoughts in, without the book telling me what to write (like this does). I have not found anything that is not a regular plain journal so this works I guess.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Very Creative.......2007-09-04
This book was great! It was full of questions that I would probably never think to ask my grandmother and the book is not cheap in any way. Aside from questions and answers there are envelopes inside the book and also slots at the end of each little chapter for pics. It's really a neat book and I think my grandmother will enjoy reliving old memories while filling in this book. It will be a good read for me someday as well. I wish I could have given one to my great grandmother before she starting forgetting things.
Nice book but not what I was looking for.......2007-02-14
I had gone back and forth trying to find the best book to have my parents fill out for my new daughter and I settled on this one. Most of the books are for one individual to fill out. I got confused with all the books I was looking at and purchased this one thinking that it was for both grandparents to fill out together however it is not. It is a nice book and the grandparents are going to try to fill it out jointly, however it is not easily set up for that.
Memories for My Grandchild.......2006-07-18
The book has tons of space to put family information and pictures.
the only problem is it will take me a year to complete the project!!! But when it is done it will be a wonderful keepsake for both my grandchildren. I bought on copy and when I saw how nice ist was I oreder another.
Add this book to your Baby Registry!.......2006-05-16
My wife and love this book. The book's thoughtful questions lead you effortlessly through the process of creating your own family documentary. Now that we're parents-to-be (4 more months and counting), we can't wait to give it to our own parents/soon-to-be grandparents. A must-have addition to every baby registry!
A perfect baby gift.......2005-07-23
I just got 2 copies of this for my friend's new baby... or, rather, for the baby to "give" her grandmothers. Most of the other gifts my she received are things that she will grow out of, but this is one she'll have forever. It's amazing how the stories have engaged her whole family! The book is beautiful - I'd recommend it to anyone lucky enough to have grandparents with them.
Book Description

When completed, "My Baby's Journal's" eight informative, fun sections will be a unique and wonderful memento of happy, funny, and appealing memories of your child's first year. This beautiful book is a perfect gift for all new parents.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Baby Journal.......2007-10-08
This baby journal is the best one out there! It's divided into 8 sections, with tabs so that it's easy to go to the section you want; and there are pages that are completely blank so that you can put pictures (or whatever you want), each section divider also has pockets on the other side, so that you can put things in it. There are beautiful photographed pictures, and the questions are short and simple, not like other journals that asks you the same question in three different ways. The book is very colorful, and all together just simply beautiful, and I can't believe what a bargain the price is, especially since there are so many more expensive ones out there, that are even half as nice as this one (and I should know, I've bought four so far, and ended up throwing all four of them out, after I realize I wasn't ever going to bother finishing them).
Beautiful book.......2007-07-03
I love this book. My baby is 9 months now, and I'm still filling it. I enjoy writing every milestone of him on it.
I even got a new one... for a gift or for a future baby.
THE BEST*****.......2007-06-22
I highly recommend My Baby's Journal. This book hold everything! Very detailed. I know that my daughter will enjoy reading about her milestones as well as mommy and daddy's thoughts before she was born. The description states that My Baby's Journal is spiral bound, but it is much nicer than described. My only regret is that I did not purchase earlier in my pregnancy.
Waaaay too much detail for new parents to fill in.......2007-06-06
I gave this book 2 stars because that's the "I don't like it" amount.
First of all, the yellow binding on the cover had smudges that could not be removed. So be aware that it might not look nice and new.
Secondly, I didn't realize how lengthy and detailed this book was until I got it... and I found it really excessive in that sense. Most new parents won't have the time, energy, or desire to fill in this book. But some will, of course. So if you find it important to keep a record of things like "My child first focused his eyes on _(date)__" and other minutiae, this might be the book for you. But if you're the type who just wants to enjoy the ride and record major life events, choose another -- like "My Life as a Baby," which is short and sweet.
WOW, I LOOOOVE this jornal!!.......2007-05-17
I just love this journal! I had a wonderful journal for my pregnancy and was hoping to find one for my daughter that was just as good. This journal ended up being even better than I had imagined!!! You will LOVE it! So many pages and questions that you don't even think of... it will be treasured by my daughter when she gets older!
Book Description
For every parent, a baby's early years are filled with memorable firsts-first smiles . . . first words . . . first steps . . . first Christmas. It's natural that an artist best known for her celebration of babies would create the perfect place to save these precious moments for posterity.
My First Five Years-Flower Edition is graced throughout with the remarkable images of acclaimed photographer Anne Geddes. She uses the gorgeous imagery from Miracle, her heartfelt collaboration with singer Celine Dion, to cast a magical feeling over the entire journal.
Each turn of the page reveals an enchanting image and yet another example of her deep and abiding love for babies-a slumbering baby rests gently atop a peony, the calla lily petals offer protection to a newborn in its loving caress, an orchid tenderly cradles a sleeping child. Through Geddes' eyes we are able to experience the innocence and preciousness of new life.
My First Five Years is filled with touches that make this a truly special journal-an envelope to hold a baby's first lock of hair, height and weight charts to track growth through the years, and plenty of room for announcements and your own child's photos and mementos.
My First Five Years-Flower Edition will become a treasured keepsake of a time that passes all too quickly.

Details.......2007-08-23
The book had beatiful pictures, and good details to remember the baby. One thing that could be improved, would be to see more space for pictures. (ex: first bath - page for pictures).
It's Okay.......2007-05-25
Very pretty but as a Jewish mom, I always find it irritating that the page says "First Christmas" instead of "First Holiday" ruining the book for us.
Wonderful!.......2007-04-11
I loved this book, it has all of the cute things to remember about your baby's first year with holidays, birthdays, milestones, teeth, height and weight chart and even their shot records. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone having a baby!
Exactly what I wanted!.......2007-01-10
Beautiful pictures, well put together. This book is just what I was looking for. I love it!
it's okay..........2007-01-05
The book is really pretty, however the glossy pages are not exactly ideal for the hand and footprints. And ink pens smear a little too. Best to use a permanent fine tip marker. I also wish the pages were a little bigger, so you could tuck full size sheets of paper in between the pages-- momentos & etc.

Great Book!.......2007-08-23
I really recommend this book to anyone who is looking to record the details of their baby shower! The unfortunate thing is that there aren't many out there to choose from. I wish this was a tad bit bigger. If your invitation is on the larger side, it might not fit on the page for a keepsake. But overall, I am very happy with the book. I wanted to be able to keep my own memories and have other's advice and predictions in the same place and this book does all of that and more.
It's a nice keepsake!.......2007-08-05
We were looking for a shower keepsake book for my second shower. We had a very nice one 4 years ago from Hallmark for the shower when I was pregnant with my son. Now, Hallmark doesn't have them anymore so this seemed the closest to it that we could find. You can fit pictures, but only one on a page, which I would probably put more in a scrapbook anyways. I like all the spaces for signatures, predictions, gifts, and etc. It's not as big as my sons but it will be something still to cherish.
Great Baby Shower Gift.......2007-06-07
I bought this for my daughter-in-law's baby shower.
It's very cute and is formatted nicely for recording a very special event.
We put a picture of the sonogram on front cover.
We also layed the album open on table for guests to sign during the shower...
Exactly what I was looking for..........2007-02-08
This book has it all. I loved the parent pages and the advice section for the guests. It really is a treasure for mom-to-be.

Book Description
Loretta Lynn was born in the coal mining country of Kentucky. She was the oldest of seven kids; raised in poverty, married at 13, and a mother of 4 by the time she was 17. Few would have expected this type of adolescence to produce a woman who was the winner of every music award imaginable, the author of two
New York Times bestselling books and a 2003 Kennedy Center honoree, and whose life story was the subject of an Academy Award winning movie.
In
You're Cookin' It Country, Loretta Lynn shares over 120 of her favorite recipes. From the dishes her mother cooked as she was growing up to the meals she has prepared for her family over the years. Also included are more than 35 stories relating to food as only Loretta can tell them. These include stories of her "Mommy" going out hunting for rabbit and possum to the more recent story of Jack White of the rock group The White Stripes flying to Nashville to have a dinner of chicken and dumplings with Loretta. There is also the story of her husband to be, Doolittle, buying a pie from her at an auction only to discover that Loretta had mistaken salt for the sugar when she baked it.
You're Cookin' It Country will be a must have purchase for the millions of fans Loretta has made all over the world.
Loretta's first book,
Coal Miner's Daughter (1978) has sold more than one million copies. Her second book,
Still Woman Enough (2002) has sold more than 200,000 copies. Both were
New York Times bestsellers.

Not bad..........2007-05-24
I wasn't sure what to expect from this cookbook. I've always liked Loretta Lynn's homespun "Mayberry" wisdom; and her anecdotes and narratives, while seemingly disconnected and random, are nevertheless charming and succinct. In her recollections, we meet Johnny and June Carter Cash, and, of course, Patsy Cline. We learn that Cline loved rabbit and that Loretta served fried rabbit the last time she saw Cline before her untimely death in March of 1963. I was prepared not to like this cookbook at first glance...Others, like Naomi Judd's, produce consistently disappointing results, but every recipe we've tried from this book has been, frankly--to my surprise--outstanding. The breakfast casserole is superb, and we served it on Christmas morning, with champagne, to rave reviews. The sausage pinwheels and BLT dip were served with cocktails on New Year's Eve, and everyone asked for the recipes. From the desserts...The fudge pie is excellent! The recipes are easy to cook and don't require any alterations or tampering like some cookbook recipes do. I'm a little squeamish about some of the included recipes, like Kentucky frog legs and possum--her daddy's favorite dish (Loretta tells us that possum meat is tough, and must be cooked slowly and for a long time, and oily)--but these are regional dishes and give the book an historical context. These recipes are on par with what I think are the best cookbooks anywhere--church cookbooks that represent real tried and true recipes from Americans. There's nothing fancy here. Just a collection of recipes that have produced some good eats.
This is the best cookbook ever! .......2006-08-23
I can't boil water but I think this is the best, and only, cookbook I've ever bought.
I stopped cooking shortly after seeing my hotdog burst in the microwave as a child. Shocked and confused, I gave up cooking forever. Until now that is.
I actually bought this for Christal Rodgers. She is a big Loretta Lynn fan and she really seemed to enjoy reading this book as much as any human can enjoy reading a cookbook.
This book is a must have for any Loretta Lynn fan. I hope George Jones writes a book called "Fun in the kitchen with beer and whiskey" or something of that nature.
good comfort food, some nice pictures.......2006-04-15
This book succeeds pretty well on 3 fronts: as cookbook, fodder for LL fans, and cultural artifact. Many of the recipes are for high fat and cholesterol treats -- in other words, delicious, but best indulged in by people who burn a lot of calories. The homespun anecdotes from LL occasionally seem a bit strained -- one expects she was told to supply them in cases where there really wasn't much of a story -- but it all sounds sincere. The reproduced snapshots, many of them from the Lynn's domestic life going back to the 1950s, are interesting for LL fans. This book is widely remaindered and can be found for considerably less than you see here.
You know it's country ,if it's finger lickin' good........2006-04-03
Reading this book, one gets the feeling that they are visiting the Lynns in their home while fixin'supper. The book is a very light hearted read and you get to see how they had to use lots of love and ingenuity feeding all the family. Things may have been tough, but so were the people;and even when the variety may have been not what we are used to today; nobody ever went hungry. As a matter of fact ,the old saying that "We didn't even know we were poor,'cause everyone else was the same". I think it was Dolly Parton who said something to the effect , "You're never poor unless you think you are poor".
As time goes on, and Loretta's musical career skyrockets,we see their tastes really don't change. There are lots of recipes in the book that will bring back many fond memories of that great home cooking we enjoyed from our mothers and grandmothers;and even with all the cook books that get published;basic, simple home cooking is still the best.
Growing up in the Maritimes, our food was much the same except for a few of those Southern dishes like Possum,Squirrel and Grits.Of course, we had our Cod,Deer Meat and Dulse. But when the Cornbread and Molasses appeared on the table ,the feast was about to begin. As they say in Newfoundland; "Seal flippers and onions makes a hell of a meal". Don't try to order that in Tennennsee;but then you're not likely to find Possum stew on the menu in Newfoundland.
A wonderful read and we're going to cook up some of these great recipes;real soon ya'hear!
Easy to follow recipes.......2006-03-30
I just got the cookbook yesterday and I haven't been able to put it down. I keep reading the recipes making notes of which ones I want to make. Loretta makes some classic southern things such as Wilted Lettuce and Chocolate Gravy. There are recipes for every meal and she includes plenty of stories and pictures to go along with many of the recipes. The recipes have easy ingredients. Things that you can find in the store and many in your own kitchen. The directions are also easy to follow. Nothing that a novice cook couldn't do. I think that real Loretta fans will love this cookbook the most. I don't think that someone who heard "Coalminer's Daughter" once twenty years ago will get the full effect of this book. I love Loretta, so if you're like me, you won't go wrong with this book.
