Very Entertaining, but Sad.......2007-04-25
This is a true story of a teen who was raped. I really enjoyed reading her life story. I felt like I was actually there in her life. She had a wonderful relationship with her mother and her best friends. Nancy was a girl who loved life. The ending of the book was very sad, especially when Nancy became very sick and suffered a lot.
in response to natashas "shameful".......2007-01-10
i am 20 years old and a victim of date rape at age 12. I am reading this book now and only half way through and im in tears, in tears because i ave been where she is in her darkness and it has taken me 8 years to over come most of my fears and my ticks with men.. as far as the book being shameful.. hardly... i have 2 sisters under 15 and i dont care if beatrice sparks invented this story after a bad date or if no such "nancy" existed. because i was nancy 8 years ago.. i was lucky enough not to have been infected with HIV but girls her age need to be warned and they need to know that no matter how old or how sweet every body is capable of hurting them. to be careful and to always trust in their parents because for all they know they were a victim like nancy and myself and thousands of other under age girls and even thousands of age women.. this is a tragic honest tale of all that we have been through but were to afraid to share.. i would recommend this book to anybody with eyes..there is truth in everypage.. please read this book and every other book edited by beatrice sparks and have your children read them too.. i wish i would have read it before it happened to me.. thank you nancy for being so strong and giving millions of girls like you courage to fight.
with love

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Clendar.......2007-04-02
I purchased this calendar for my son,as a daily reminder of the up coming SAT's. The calendar is wonderful, not one of his favorite Xmas gifts, but he does do the questions each day and some of them are challenging.
All in all this is a pretty good calendar. The calendar does not let the weekend slip by either, one question fro every day!
SAT-isfactory.......2007-01-04
This calendar delivers the goods--for each day, we get either a verbal or a logical/mathematical SAT question to answer. And none of this garbage of one page for the weekend--there are really 365 pages/questions! The ratio of verbal to mathematical questions is two to one. The questions must be from fairly recent tests, since the hated verbal analogies are not present. (I rather liked them myself.) My only criticism of the verbal questions is that they do tend to funnel the mind of the testee into stereotyped, business-oriented ways of thinking about and using language--but that is not the fault of the calendar.
To get 5 stars, the calendar would have had to supply the reasoning behind the correct answers.

Kicking it up a notch for a beginner like me.......2007-09-13
This book helped me get to the next stage in my beginning art journaling. I learned why paper behaves the way it does when liquid is applied, how different adhesives work and what they're good for--tons of practical stuff for a neophyte to art journaling. I go back to it again and again. It's got great information, and it's a beautiful book to spend time with. I'll grow into it for a long time.
decorated journal.......2007-09-03
I loved Gwen Diehn's first book and this one is very, very good. The journal pages by the artists and the suggestions from the author are inspiring and thought provoking.
The design of this book is uninspired and boring. It is UNDERdecorated. It looks like a text book, which is a shame.
very good ideas.......2007-08-12
I was very pleased with this book! It has lots of great ideas for journaling or other mediums.
A must have book for journal makers!! .......2007-07-21
I devoured this book! It is by far the most inspiring and informational book on journal making I have ever read. Wonderfully written and illustrated so it is easy to understand and put to use. I can't wait to try everything including making my own pigments! I guess I'll have to buy her first one!
Decorated Journal.......2007-03-13
I personally think if you are into journal making it is a great book. I cannot rate it because the book was not what I wanted for my own reference.

Great Love Story.......2007-05-23
I'm a big GH fan and have watched since I was a child with my babysitter. I was a teenager when Robin and Stone's story was playing out and I loved it so much I bought Robin's Diary to relive it whenever I wanted to. These days soaps are more about violence and shockers than love and it's great to take it out and remember how it used to be.
You don't need to watch General Hospital to read this book and it to make sense. It's a great tale of young love.
Not just for the General Hospital Fan.......2006-03-26
Although based on a storyline from the popular soap opera General Hospital, this is actually a Romeo and Juliet type story teens can relate to. I read this for the first time as a teenager and still love it as an adult. This story looks at how two people on the verge of adulthood have to learn to live when one is HIV + and how that affects everyone in this young man's life, most notably his girlfriend Robin. Robin's courage thoughout is an inspiration.
the best.......2004-01-06
This is my favorite book. The story covers a major crush, first love, a first time and a tragic death. I am the biggest fan of Robin and Stone around, and each time I read this book I still cry at the end. Robin and Stone will always be in my heart.
true love.......2003-05-20
This book has everything you love in a story: friendship, love, drama, vunerabilty, complexity. I could go on and on. This story was truely the best I have ever read. I watched Robin and Stone on t.v when I was younger, but now that I have the book I appriciate it even more. I cried and cried at the end. Love to Robin and Stone forever. Thank you for this wonderful story General Hospital.
I am a huge Robin and Stone fan........2000-10-08
i have read and enjoyed this book many many times. I am also a huge fan of both Stone and Robin. I just have one problem with it. (not the book) i can't seem to find anything on the actor who played Stone, and i am not able to find him real name either. If anyone can help me please let me know. My email is mrs_green_thumbs@yahoo.com.i will be looking forward to more books like these.

Most influential book in my life.......1996-12-23
This is the most influential book in my life. I am deeply
touched by the talent of Anne. You couldn't guess that this
diary was writen by a 13 years old girl. The life in the
annex was well illustrated. Anne's mind is opened before us
by this great diary. However, you couldn't say that this
was not writen by a 13 years old girl. The thoughts are what
a teenage girls should have. But, very little teenage or even
adult can describ his/her feeling and thoughts in such
detail.
I feel deeply sorry for Anne's suffering. I felt so frighten
when I was reading near the end of the diary. I don't want
the diary stop there. Why was the annex was discovered??

Anne Frank Revisited..........2007-10-17
As just about every other student, I read The Diary of Anne Frank in middle school, probably during the 6th or 7th grade. I had a distant memory of it, but not much. Well, recently I watched Schindler's List and this got me re-interested in WWII, and especially the Holocaust. I read Night by Eli Wiesel (highly recommended) and decided to move on to The Diary of Anne Frank. Let me start by reviewing the book:
The Diary of Anne Frank is a diary of a young, Jewish girl (as the title obviously states, haha) whom is forced to go into hiding with her family during the Nazi occupation of Holland in the early 1940's. During this period, Jews were being segregated and even sent off to concentration camps by the Germans on a daily basis. When Anne's sister's name was next on the list, their father decided to take the family into hiding.
Aided by some of Otto's (Anne's father) former employees, the Franks seclude themselves in a small Annex of a business in Amsterdam. There, they are joined by the Van Daan family and later by an older gentleman, Mr. Dussel. Anne's diary chronicles their plight for the following two years, until they are discovered by the German secret police and ultimately sent to their death in Jewish concentration camps.
Anne addresses various topics, from their daily activities, to her interest in the son of the Van Daan's, Peter, to some of her inner most thoughts, fears, and aspirations. I have to share with you that I was EXTREMELY impressed with Anne's intelligence. I couldn't help but compare her to myself when I was only 15 years old and I am amazed not only at her intelligence but her strength to persevere during such horrible times. This young girl manages to keep faith in God and struggles with maintaining her morality, even as all around her she is witnessing a warped world full of sin, hatred and evil. I cannot say that in her shoes I would've reacted the same.
I encourage any reader to read and/or re-read The Diary of Anne Frank. You will be completely enveloped by her wit and warmth and are surely to fall in love with her.
Ann Frank.......2007-10-05
The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition is the diary Anne Frank a young Jewish girl growing up during World War II and the holocaust. Anne lives in Amsterdam with her mother, father, and sister Margot. When Anne is 13 she and her family must go into hiding to escape the Germans call ups, particularly one for Margot. They hide in the back of a warehouse where Otto (Anne's father) works. There are seven people at the beginning including the three van Daans an Anne and her family.
The diary reminds me of The Breadwinner which is about a young girl growing up in Afghanistan during the Taliban's rule. The main character must dress up as a boy when her father is arrested to earn money for her family. Unlike Anne's diary however this was written in modern day. They both had trouble getting food that they needed and lived in fear of getting arrested. Although they lived in different times the experiences of the girls were similar
After a bit Albert Dussel, a dentist, joins the group in, as it came to be known, the Secret Annex. Dussel became a bit annoying when he starts hiding food when the rest of the group need to get coupon books through the black market and are eating rotten potatoes and other foods. He did however give them dental checkups. Anne shared a room with Dussel when he came (before she shared with Margot) and was frequently woken up when he got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. "Mr. Dussel's Toilet Timetable" is some thing that Anne tacks to the bathroom door. "I might well have added "Transgressors will be subject to confinement!" Because our bathroom can be locked from both the inside and the outside." Is something Anne writes after the timetable.
Anne also makes friends with Peter van Dan and spends quite a few evenings in his attic bedroom because it has the only window that's not covered by a curtain. They become valuable resources for each other.
All in all this is a very good book and I highly recommend it.
Amazing diary of a young woman .......2007-10-01
Anne Frank is remembered for being a sweet young girl that went into hiding during the holocaust only to be found and sent to a concentration camp where she died 3 months befroe her 16th birthday. The time in between these two horrible events is full of fear, fights, learning, and love, basically life. This version of the diary has more material than the orginal, which some people think is too much, but it is what she wrote left alone. It has what she intended the book to be. It includes story from the restrictions put on her while she wasn't in hiding because she was Jewish to her chores that she did quietly in the Secret Annex such as peeling potatoes and rubbing beans. It is not always the most interesting book, but it does provoke thought. It's sad in the fact that you know how its going to end before you start, but Anne does not as she's wrting it. Anne Frank's writing surpass her age, she writes not as a stuborn teenager, but as an intelligent young woman.
A Powerful and Intimate Portrait.......2007-09-30
You know the storyline - a Jewish girl, her family, and some friends go into hiding for two years during the Nazi regime in Holland. Said girl writes her thoughts and observations of her life during this time in a diary, which is found and published after her death in a concentration camp. It has become a classic, and it was written by a young teenager.
My favorite aspect of this book will forever be Anne's powerful narrative voice. Her words speak, and more than that they smell and taste and touch. She gives her diary, "Kitty," an intimate portrait of life in the "Secret Annexe," both public and private - of the ups-and-downs of people's relationships, of her inner struggles and growth, of her love. Reading her diary is like looking through the window at the war from two perspectives - one from the outside in, at the life of a girl and a family who were sucked into the Nazi vacuum through no fault of their own; and the other from the inside out, at the crazy world war swirling around the epicenter of one fourteen-year-old girl.
Book Report: Diary of a Young Girl.......2007-09-30
This book tells an amazing story of a young girl living in Germany in World War II. And to think it was all a journal is amazing. Anne Frank, a brave young Jewish girl, spends two years hiding in the secret annex from the Nazis. Anne Frank started to keep this diary on her thirteenth birthday. She called her diary, Kitty. At the start of her diary, Anne describes fairly typical experiences, writing about her friendships with other girls, her crushes on boys.
Later, the Franks had moved to the Netherlands in the years leading up to World War II to escape persecution in Germany. They were forced into hiding with another family, the van Daans. There, they listened closely to the radio and everything that happened during the war. Anne kept up with everything that happened while she was there. It was very hard for her because she was separated from all her friends and her normal life style.
I suggest this book for all ages. It is a very inspirational story. It gives a different perspective on life.

Glowingly Upbeat Testament to Life and Love.......2006-01-08
"The final work of the Obie Award-winning playwright of Zero Positive is a glowingly upbeat testament to life and love, gay and straight, now and forever. Susan and Bill are a New York couple who promise to care for their HIV-positive friend, Hector. But suddenly their marriage is breaking up--and Hector has placed himself smack in the middle."--© zebraz
Brilliant.......2000-06-03
Through the entire book I was having one emotion after the other, but sadness was the constant. This book is incredibly moving, and even though we all know how it'll end, it captures us and does not let us detach ourselves from what happens. I am at a loss for words to express how I feel for this wonderful novel about life and love and death and suffering. Just read it, you won't be sorry.

Book Description
This is part of a new series of guides to contemporary novels. The aim of the series is to give readers accessible and informative introductions to some of the most popular, most acclaimed and most influential novels of recent years - from 'The Remains of the Day' to 'White Teeth'. A team of contemporary fiction scholars from both sides of the Atlantic has been assembled to provide a thorough and readable analysis of each of the novels in question.
Customer Reviews:
Simply Beautiful.......2003-08-07
The Stone Diaries is my favorite book, and I've read a lot of books. It's difficult to put this book into words or to clearly convey the emotion it evokes. It is the story of Daisy, a quite ordinary woman, and the author, who I'm sorry to say recently passed away, shows us how it is exactly that ordinariness that makes every human being so precious. She shows us that people have common threads that unite us. She also shows us that we ordinary folk still have qualities and experiences unique to us. As for Carol Shield's writing: Extraordinary.
a reader from Seattle, Washington.......2001-11-01
This book came out at just the right time! My book group is reading Pulitzer Prize winning novels, and we're scheduled to read The Stone Diaries next week. Imagine my delight when I found Werlock's Reader's Guide in one of our local bookstores....and discovered that she has actually asked Carol Shields some of the questions that our group would like to ask her! This book is filled with great background information, useful interpretation, and thought-provoking questions. If all the books in the series are this good, I'll buy them all!
Book Club Choice!.......2001-10-29
Even though my Chicago-based book club had already read Carol Shields's The Stone Diaries, we all went out and bought Abby Werlock's guide to our favorite novel. What a help this book has been to us! When we first discussed the novel, we had all sorts of questions, especially about whether Daisy or someone else was speaking at any given time. Well, Werlock's explanation solves it all! And even though she provides many answers to common questions, she asks questions herself, providing even more issues to delve into in this very complex and satisfying book. I recommend it to all devotees of Carol Shields.
Background for Carol Shields's best book!.......2001-10-29
As a long-time fan of everything by Carol Shields, I was glad to see the United States starting to pay more attention to this Canadian writer, especially for The Stone Diaries, in my opinion her best book. The background information that Abby Werlock provides is incredibly helpful (for instance, Shields is not responsible for the title!). Ms. Werlock's interview with Shields is a plus, especially because she wisely avoids the q and a format and instead spreads Shields's comments throughout the book. I love The Stone Diaries, but now, after reading Werlock's book, I understand it even better!
