Book Description

In this must-have resource, "two teachers from Minnesota" share their successful use of the simple concept of 5-point scales to help students understand and control their emotional reactions to everyday events that might otherwise set in emotion escalating reactions. Whether it is inappropriate touching, obsessions, yelling, hitting or making hurtful statements to classmates, this clearly illustrated book shows how to break down a given behavior and, with the student's active participation, develop a unique scale that identifies the problem and, just as important, suggests alternative, positive behaviors at each level of the scale.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for any adult working with a special needs child.......2007-02-11

You can make this work for just about any problem. I now just hold up a finger and my child knows what I am trying to say even my younger child is getting it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2007-02-06

Finally, a basic book listing basic skills for people who do not understand "thinking outside the box." I'm so happy to see something that can help educators and families find hands-on techniques for those who are clueless, hopeless, and helpless.

5 out of 5 stars What a great idea!!.......2007-01-07

This book has been very helpful with my Asperger son and my non-Asperger son. As a teachers aide, I have used it the the kids at school and some teachers have borrowed my book and are using it themselves. It has pages to copy so that you can make your own 5-point scale. Just wonderful!!!

3 out of 5 stars Save your Money.......2006-07-16

This is a great concept, but not worth buying a book over.
It is a simple strategy that can be applied in any context -
Rate the behavior; rate the desired behavior.
It gets a mediocre smile or 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and easy to implement.......2006-06-25

It was very easy to implement the program, and my student got it right away.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible You.......2007-09-14

Great, except one complaint. I use stories as part of my teaching art to kids, and it can't be included in my class as "belief in God" has to be learned in the home.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Childrens book.......2007-05-07

This is excellent for children to learn early on that they are wonderful no matter what happens. Great for self confidence to help them thur the difficult situation of growing up.

If you have children this is an excellent book for them.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, wonderful book!!.......2007-02-20

This was bought for my 8 yr old daughter. I also bought his other great childrens book Unstoppable Me. These books teach children great leesons on how to be themselves. To think, act, and decide things for themselves. My daughter is a very positive girl, but when something bothers her, she keeps at it for a while. After reading these books a few times, I noticed an even more positive child. She comes home from school saying her day was great and she didn't let anyone bother her. If you are on the fence about buying this book, jump down and put in your cart right away!!

5 out of 5 stars Wondeful Book.......2007-02-02

This book is an incredible and inspiring work that expresses Universal Truths to our precious children. I have read it several times to my infants and will use it throughout their development. In addition, it was a part of my inspiration to write a childrens book titled, Daddy What is Success, which will be released later this year from Loving Healing Press. We need to educate our children on the imporatnt things in life from the beginning.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for your child's library.......2007-01-18

I have two young children {3yrs. & 5yrs.} who are very expressive and sensitive with their thoughts, as well as others. I found this book to be a great way to further educate them on how to feel proud and deal with frustration and/or challenges.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-10-17

"Life" by Lauren Tratar is an excellent book that delves into some astonishing information about the nature of personal reality, negative energy vortex, adamantine particles, and magnetic evidence. This is a very valuable workbook and guide. Firstly the reader explores their present beliefs, and then identifies what is wanted out of life, and finally how to use the law of attraction to manifest what you really want.

Also included are some extremely vlauable tools to guide you back on your path if you've lost your way.

A must read for anyone who is serious about personal self development work.

Some more powerful books that I recommend are:

The Astonishing Power of Emotions

Nexus: A Neo Novel

Purporting to unveil the secret behind The Secret this book is a confused mish-mash New Age philosophy and pop psychology.

On the positive side, this book is physically quite attractive. The binder and section dividers feature lovely photographs and I thought the format was promising. The problem, however is in the contents. The author's style is clumsily self-conscious and she doesn't have an original idea.(In all fairness, there is not much new on the Law of Attraction. The trick is in a fresh presentation.) The book is packed with quotations of other people's works and song lyrics. Apparently, the author once ordered one book and another, a book of inspirational quotations, came instead She found this book wonderfully inspirational and each chapter features not just one or two quotes, but sometimes pages of them. Sorry, if I wanted to read Conversations with God I, II and III, The Nature of Personal Reality or any of the others she relies on, I would not have been reading her book. This over reliance on quotes is disruptive and contributes to the careful, term paperish effect.

This book quickly loses focus, jumping wildly from a clunky law of attraction formula to a recitation of the author's traumatic and abusive childhood and journey through different recovery modalities. While I credit her for addressing these challenges, it reads like a bad episode of Dr. Phil. It is somewhat troubling that she disparages the classic twelve step method as it does not fit within the precepts of her message.

The author refers to her higher self as "Angel". If you subscribe to the traditional definition of angels as being messengers of God, you will find his usage jarring.

If you are interested in the law of Attraction, there are many fine books that present it in an accessible manner. You can't go wrong with the classic Dynamic Laws of Prosperity by Catherine Ponder. The Abraham -Hicks materials provide a contemporary look at the law of attraction as do the Attractor Factor by Joe Vitale and Lynne Grabhorn's Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting. Michale Losier's Law of Attraction workbook is simple but effective while The Sedona Method and Larry Crane's Abundance Course are superb tutorials on releasing. If you opt for this offering you will receive a really neat binder and a headache.

I am a Metaphysician and an avid Law of Attraction (LOA) worker. One of my favorite things to do is continuously reveal to myself *evidence* of how Great Things Really Are. Lauren's book is an SPARKLING JEWEL! I totally adore how she has collected quotes & passages from throughout the ages from a huge assortment of Wise Voices and I definitely appreciate her research format of actually citing her sources (so often missing or incomplete in others' works). Her material is accurate, timely, and perfectly applicable - especially so in our current world situation. Read this book and drink from the Well of Wellbeingness. Your soul will thank you, your heart will rejoice, and your mind will have something very tangible to work with. The best part? You'll discover that your Sacred Imagination is finally free to do its thing: Make YOUR Personal Universe/Reality Delicously FUN! Book Description

The NBA is in trouble. And as NBA agent Keith Glass describes it–he's part of the problem! If team owners are willing to throw millions of dollars his way for marginal players, why should he be the only one with the self–restraint to say "no?"

In his insightful, funny, and often mind–numbingly bizarre tales of life in the NBA, Keith Glass lets it fly from half–court. He'll tell you how we got to the present state–where an agent who makes millions off the game can't sit through one; why our NBA stars couldn't capture Olympic gold; why one of the greatest high school players he ever saw ended up in Attica prison instead of the NBA; why selfishness has attached itself to the league; and why the game he loves is in dire need of help. With informative chapters such as "How to Feed Your Family on Only $14 Million a Year," "Eighty–one Feet of White Centers," and "From 6'11" to the 7–Eleven," Glass shatters the myth of NBA marketing: that everything about the game is great, that tickets are worth over $100 apiece, and that as long as the fans in the luxury boxes are happy and weighed down with jerseys and merchandise, all is well. But have no fear! Keith Glass will not preach about the evils of highlight film slam–dunks and gangsta rap tattoos–he'll just have you falling down laughing as he flagrantly fouls the league that was once the home of Jordan, Magic, and Bird–not to mention Wilt, Russell, Kareem and all the greats in between.

3 out of 5 stars A Heart-felt Examination of What the NBA Has Become.......2007-10-07

Keith Glass tells a great tale, and his many years of experience representing NBA players has given him many to tell. Glass' book is a great insight into the other side of the NBA that the general public would otherwise have no access to. But one of the greatest elements of this book is Glass' true passion for the sport, and for the part he has played in it.

The book looks at Glass' upbringing, with basketball in his life from a very young age. Glass discusses how Larry Brown ended up living with his family, how Glass saw the evolution of basketball, and how he became a coach at UCLA. There's a very nostalgic and homely feel to these earlier chapters, and they definitely show a man who really loves the game and loves the relationships he has been able to establish through it.

The book then looks at Glass' adventures in representing top level NBA stars and how he came into this career. The greatest stories in here are the tale of Mahamoud Abdul-Rauf, the making of Scott Skiles (current head coach of the Chicago Bulls) and the sad story of Thomas Hamilton. It really is the stories like Hamilton's, a seven-foot-four giant with exquisite skills who could never get his NBA career started due to personal problems, that make this book. The power this story has is it makes you look at how some people can throw their God-given talent away, which gives you perspective to appreciate what you have in your life.

The latter chapters lack the same level of interest, as Glass discusses the various ways he NBA could improve the league and take it back to it's roots more, and further away from the greed-driven monster it has become. Glass makes some great points, but they could have been better illustrated through his stories, rather than telling the reader, point-blank. His various tales deliver this message through subtlety and through reading between the lines of what's going on, so to have this opinion forced onto the reader in the end weakened the overall tone of the writing a bit.

It also plays down some of Glass' other failings, in that he makes little to no mention of his previous marriages and doesn't discuss things he has done that he has regretted. It seems, at times, that Glass is a little too ethical in a world of no ethics, and to survive in this arena, Glass says himself, you can't always hold to your morals. There would appear to be a level of censorship and restraint at times. The book could have had more effect if there were no barriers, no holds barred.

There are also two times that Glass refers to the story of Lloyd Daniels, and says that he would need an entire book of it's own to tell Daniels' story. Lloyd Daniels was shot three times in the late eighties and still, to this day, has a bullet lodged in his right shoulder. He never played in college, yet went on to play for five NBA teams. Now that's a story I want to hear. Daniels' story should have made the book, even in brief form.

At the end of the book you get the sense that this is the story Keith Glass wanted to tell in exactly the way he wanted to tell it, which is not so bad, but it felt like it could have explored so much more about the dark side of the glamourous life of pro-ballers. As it stands, it's an interesting read, great at times, but overall more focussed on presenting a portrait of a man who loves the game and who holds a special place in his heart for 'his' players. Again, this is not so bad, but a but more controversy and a couple more first-hand accounts of back-room dealings would have made this a more important and compulsive book.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Read.......2007-09-06

I recently met Keith Glass and his wife at a college graduation party for my niece. His son, Tyler, is dating my niece, and my sister-in-law, knowing that I'm a sports fan, made sure I was introduced to Keith because, as she put it, "You know sports, you'll like him." Well, she was right. After a few minutes I realized that I did, indeed, like him. When the book came up in conversation I told Keith that I would order it from Amazon as soon as I got home, and I'm glad that I did. This was a very entertaining read. OK, it's not going to be used as a textbook in school, and it's got its share of glaring typos (I proof read books as a favor to friends who are authors) but if you're a basketball fan you're going to love this book. Keith is truly an "insider" and gives perspectives that can only be gotten from an insider. His anecdotes are filled with conversations that you would normally not hear anywhere. One, in particular, stands out. Keith used to represent the former Chris Jackson, who subsequently became Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, whom you may recognize as the Denver Nuggets player who refused to stand for the National Anthem after he converted to Islam. Keith's insight into Mahmoud's background and battle with Tourette's Syndrome is very helpful in understanding him. Heck, just imagining a Jewish agent representing a Muslim player is fun.
At then end of the book Keith decides to opine on his "ways to fix basketball" and , while some are dead-on and interesting, I found some to be, in fact, either ideas that we've all bandied about in tavern conversation, or non-implementable. Still, it doesn't detract from the overall "fun-to-read" aspect of the book. I sense a follow-up to this book from Keith and, if so, I'll be sure to get the next one. I've already promised to lend the book out to my son-in-law and a good friend in Massachusetts, so Keith will be losing out on a few book sales. When it does return to me I'm going to see what I can do about getting him to autograph my copy.

5 out of 5 stars Finally someone tells the truth!.......2007-06-09

Keith Glass lays it all out. I hope he writes the unedited version upon his retirement someday. I think he got over the line in some of his disclosure and likely pissed a few NBA-ers off, I really hope there is more he can one day share. Good for him to tell it like it is. Shame on the NBA for allowing the game to reach its current state and shame on us for continuing to pay more and more to go see it. At least now I do so knowing I'm getting ripped off most of the time, instead of just feeling good about the trip.

1 out of 5 stars Where is your ghost writer?.......2007-05-19

There is no ghost writer for this book, and I wonder if there was even an editor. Many paragraphs or individual sentences are poorly constructed, and the book lacks an overall theme or unifed feel. Mr. Glass has led an interesting life and does have some good insights on the NBA, but his inexperience as an writer completely distracted me from enjoying this book.

5 out of 5 stars 87.33 feet of white centers.......2007-05-04

What an enjoyable read! For those many of us who play(ed) and follow sports, this insider's look at professional basketball is both refreshing in its candor and enlightening in its perspective. Without gratuitously attacking the basketball establishment, Keith Glass delivers a direct and honest accounting of the inner workings of the business of basketball through a series of stories and anecdotes that at times had me laughing out loud. I found myself looking forward to each next chapter, to see what players, coaches, management or entourage members would be the subject of scrutiny. I recommend the book to anyone looking for a lighthearted, honest portrayal of professional sports. Oh, as for the title to my review, I was once a 6'4" white center myself, so I decided to include myself in Glass's chapter originally entitled "81 Feet of White Centers"............

5 out of 5 stars Great collection and even better story.......2007-10-11

Great story arc, HC edition contains more than just the Incredible Hulk issues. The extras are good and this is an outstanding story. I was not an Incredible Hulk fan and didn't even read Hulk before this story arc but this arc changed my mind. If you are a Hulk fan I strongly recommend this. If you are not a Hulk fan but enjoy a comic with intense action and a gripping story, than this is also the book for you. I really enjoyed seeing Hulk in a place where he was actually at risk of being injured or killed and this book also presents a new and intriguing look at who Hulk really is.

5 out of 5 stars Make this into movie! Smashing green succes guranteed!.......2007-10-09

Planet Hulk is one incredible world wind ride. If you like sci-fi, action and adventure with a certain green monster that likes to smash, this is the book to own. This is way better than the Marvel's Civil War event in my humble opinion. Tricked by Reed Richards and others, jettison the Hulking brute into deep space. The Hulk lands on a planet ruled by the Red King. He is cruel and dictator that his little care for his people. The Hulk is captured and sold off as a gladiator slave. The Hulk and his motley crew of Warbreakers lead an insurrection against the Red King. Along the way, the Hulk battles the Silver Surfer, free the slaves, provide nutrients for plants with his blood soak radiated blood, saves the worlds, gets married and unite the people. But there is no happy ending. The puny humans have once again enraged the Hulk that I shall not give away. When the Hulk gets mad, he gets stronger, and the puny humans will pay! Go out and buy this now. If only they could turn this story into a movie, it would be a smashing green success!

5 out of 5 stars Hulk at his best!!!.......2007-09-29

This is a great great great Hulk story. Must pickup prelude to see how it all fits together first. VERY COOL STUFF!!!

5 out of 5 stars The most emotional Hulk I've read in a looooong time.......2007-09-27

I never thought I'd love Hulk. God, how wrong I was...

It's a classic Marvel epic story, with all that story should have - beautiful concept, amazing characters, well written plot and it's as emotive and wise as any story should be. Amazing art, and it doesn't end here, it just leads for the next big thing - and believe me, it looks so sweet!

I don't think I ever fallen in love with a character as fast as I did with Hulk on this story..

3 out of 5 stars not as good as everyone seems to think.......2007-09-20

i picked this up based on buzz and reviews that made this book look like the best thing since sliced bread. also it didn't hurt that ladronn did some absolutely stellar cover work. maybe this run is so well regarded because it followed bruce jones's run, which started out rather great but floundered. the premise is fine, and there is a lot of smashing, but i didn't quite see what all the fuss was about. there isn't a whole lot of story for 14+ issues, and the padding really shows in places. i really think the pacing would have been much better if there was some down time on the planet to give the hulk and the reader a sense that he really was sent to a peaceful planet and create some tension and maybe do some character work on the hulk before he's attacked.

the portrayal of the hulk is good, but i thought there was something really missing in the appearances of bruce banner. i like the hulk, but i would really have loved to see banner's take on the situation he and the hulk have been thrown into. he shows up three times, and each appearance comes off as awkward for some reason or another. of particular interest is his appearance where a character wants to see "all" of the hulk, so he transforms into banner for her. the idea of hulk accepting banner as a part of himself should have been a landmark moment for both hulk and banner (perhaps the most important and central moment in the character's history considering that for hulk's entire existence he's been at odds with banner), but the moment is completely glossed over. this is the story for all of banner's appearances. there's so much potential in the hulk's duality. it could have been a compelling and fascinating element of the story, and it's all just glossed over. wasted potential really. and with all the "extra" room in these 14+ issues there was plenty of space to explore the hulk/banner relationship, but of course that would have required some true character work. i can't disagree that pak "gets" the hulk, but there's not a whole lot to the hulk. banner is more interesting, and pak's banner is just plain confusing. in a way banner's story could be the most compelling part of the whole saga, since for all he knows he's trapped inside the hulk on this planet forever and will never return to earth again, but there isn't even an effort to make that come across. the same goes for hulk's friends' reactions (or lack thereof) to banner showing up. wasted potential.

the art is fine. it gets the job done, but that's about it. and the supplemental material bothers me. honestly i never like it when these books come out with a stack of background material, except when they're interesting, of course. and sketchbook material is always welcome. but what we have here is a handbook-style documantation of the culture and miscellany of this planet. for my tastes it's all a wasted effort. if none of this information came across in the story i don't understand why anyone besides the exceptionally bored or exceptionally geeky would be at all interested. even at the same price i'd prefer this material be excluded from the collection, just to save some trees. life's too short to read even a little bit of it.

all-in-all this is an above average read. it's not deep by any means, and you're sure to be disappointed if you expect a five-star book, but if you like to read about the hulk smashing things you should like this. and i can't say enough good things about ladronn's cover work on this series. maybe not quite worth the price of admission alone, but pretty close.

5 out of 5 stars Get revved........2007-08-11

No need for a long review here. It's a simple, to the point book that contains a short story which illustrates the power that comes from showing others that you care. To accomplish this, the book offers a simple 3-step program (win them over, blow them away, and keep them revved). The book is mainly for managers but casual readers will like it as well. For more on motivating employees (or people in general), readers may also find The Sixty-Second Motivator useful as well.

1 out of 5 stars Could this woman be happy if he didn't marry her???.......2007-08-10

I've read my last Harry Paul book. There's a disturbing pattern developing between Harry Paul's Revved and Fish!! coauthored with Stephen Lundin. Is there no other happy ending for the living-without-a-partner heroines of these books than to end up marrying the male who comes into their lives to teach them how to...rev up the workplace or improve the workplace attitude? Would their lives be less than satisfactory if their achievement brought them "only" professional and personal satisfaction? How narrow-minded are these authors to think this is the outcome that prompted us to buy the book in the first place? I would have enjoyed the content much more if the authors stuck to the reason I bought the book: to improve my workplace environment.

5 out of 5 stars A great book from a man who practices what he preaches.......2007-03-13

Years ago, my editor met Revved! co-author Harry Paul, one of the creators of the bestseller FISH!, and asked him to consider endorsing my forthcoming book The Soul of an Organization. He not only agreed to look at it, but read it with interest, and later spoke with me by phone to discuss his thoughts on some of the book's finer points. It was a kind gesture for a budding author that I will never forget.

I later had the pleasure of meeting Harry in person for the first time, together with his co-author Ross Reck, at last year's Book Expo America, and I was amazed at what I saw. With a long line of people waiting to meet him and get his autograph, he did more than smile and sign books - he truly created a connection with each and every person on line. It was like watching someone greet his best friend over and over again.

So, I smiled when I finally sat down to read Revved! - because it spells out, in story form, exactly how to be the way Harry is in real life. His three steps to getting people "revved" are common sense, and yet elegant and procedural at the same time - and I can tell you from personal experience that they work. Buy this book for your entire management team, or better yet, get Harry to come speak in person. If everyone put his words into practice, our workplaces would be the happiest places in the world.

-Rich Gallagher, author of The Soul of an Organization and Great Customer Connections.

5 out of 5 stars I was Revved.......2007-02-02

This is a thoroughly great read which I have been able to share with people in my training and coaching role.

The book provides sound guidance for the reader who is challenged to implement the ideas given.

5 out of 5 stars Motivational.......2007-01-05

This book is easy to read and most of all easy to implement! The examples used are realistic. I was so inspired by the book, my company hired Harry Paul as our speaker for a manager's conference. The feedback from our managers: "They were more tuned in to their individual employees, which made their jobs easier!"

In the summer of 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton set off aboard the Endurance bound for the South Atlantic. The goal of his expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland, but more than a year later, and still half a continent away from the intended base, the Endurance was trapped in ice and eventually was crushed. For five months Shackleton and his crew survived on drifting ice packs in one of the most savage regions of the world before they were finally able to set sail again in one of the ship's lifeboats. Alfred Lansing's Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage is a white-knuckle account of this astounding odyssey.

Through the diaries of team members and interviews with survivors, Lansing reconstructs the months of terror and hardship the Endurance crew suffered. In October of 1915, there "were no helicopters, no Weasels, no Sno-Cats, no suitable planes. Thus their plight was naked and terrifying in its simplicity. If they were to get out--they had to get themselves out." How Shackleton did indeed get them out without the loss of a single life is at the heart of Lansing's magnificent true-life adventure tale.

Book Description

The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, "defined heroism." Alfred Lansing's scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book -- with over 200,000 copies sold -- has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance's fateful trip. To write their authoritative story, Lansing consulted with ten of the surviving members and gained access to diaries and personal accounts by eight others. The resulting book has all the immediacy of a first-hand account, expanded with maps and illustrations especially for this edition.

5 out of 5 stars Leaders aren't what they used to be.......2007-10-13

People bandy about the word "classic" without considering its significance, but this all-time bestseller will remain in print many more years. It's a true classic, ranking among the top adventure books. Nowhere will you find a more gripping account than Endurance, the survival story of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew of 27 men, in 1915. This cliff-hanger of a book stays with you. Could it be that today's leaders pale beside the likes of Shackleton?

5 out of 5 stars It is the story about what makes the British so different.......2007-10-12

Shackleton is always calm. He is resourceful and undaunted. He is not always right, many times he is just absolutely wrong. But his courage is simply breathtaking.

You must know many British famous sentences as those: "I am going out and will be for some time" or "Dr Livingstone, I presume".

Shackleton probably did not utter so famous remark. But still his above-the-all-odds behaviour makes him one of the greatest British heroes. And the mankind's. Read the story you will never forget. Read and think, how you could possibly behave in those utmost terrifying circumstances.

4 out of 5 stars Mind boggeling.......2007-05-29

This is an amazing story of leadership, and man's ability to persevere under extraordinary circumstances. It is really unbelievable. I was staggered by the odds these men overcame and their determination to press on. The book is well written and easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing story.........2007-05-19

This is a great book that will make you feel as though any hardship you have ever encountered is really not so bad when you think about what these men endured. Imagine being cold, wet, hungry, tired for basically 2 years while in the back of your mind you know that the chances of ever seeing the civilized world is remote at best. These men handled it well. Very good historical account written based on interviews, historical accounts, and actual diaries of the men on the journey.

5 out of 5 stars Finest adventure book ever written.......2007-04-21

I am working my way through the top 100 Adventure Books of all time. This one is, so far, the best. It is the concatenation of several adventure books, since almost every type of mishap and obstacle is encountered. Shackleton must go down as a true hero, as well as his crew. The version of the book with the glossies in the middle was captivating... I spent a good bit of time staring at the remarkable pictures. The story of how those film plates survived this oddysey is, in itself, remarkable.

A good adventure would be ruined by poor writing. Lansing is superb and does credit to this story.

This story could never be made into the movie because it would be considered too "far-fetched" to be believable. Note that there is a documentary DVD that (in a nutshell) describes some of the story, as well as lets you see an interesting reunion of the Endurance crew's children. Try to get this video right after you read the book.

"Everest," writes British climber Bear Grylls, "is no place to prove yourself. The likelihood of reaching the summit is so slim that you're inevitably setting yourself up to be disappointed."

But, Grylls continues, mountains are most definitely an arena where alpinists express their deepest drives, and he had more ambition than most. Badly injured in a parachuting accident in 1996, he resigned his army commission and cast about for a new career--a decision he succeeded in putting off by enlisting in a climbing expedition to the world's tallest mountain. Now, Grylls points out, the odds of a well-conditioned climber's making the summit of Everest are something like one in a hundred; for climbers under the age of 30, who lack the experience and conditioning that age brings, those odds slim down to 1 in 1,000. Twenty-three at the time, Grylls took his chances nonetheless, despite the "sinking feeling that I had just made a commitment that was going to drag me a little too far out of my comfort zone."

He fulfilled his commitment, though surely not without discomfort, scared but determined, making his way up deadly obstacles such as the Lhotse Face Icewall and its deep crevasses. Other climbers were not so lucky, he writes in this you-are-there account of his time on the mountain, and death is a constant presence on these pages--which may deter readers who seek to follow in his footholds. For those content to travel up sheer rock and ice walls vicariously, though, Grylls's book is a spirited exercise in adventure writing and a promising debut. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Read.......2007-08-31

This book is an excellent read. It shows all the training, risk, hardships, and triumph that come with reaching the top of the world. Bear shows his emotions and teaches his valuable survival skills. I really enjoyed the book and plan to read more of his work. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in outdoor adventure.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Read .......2007-08-24

This book shows what determination and drive the author has in accomplishing his goals, which was to climb Mount Everest. I really enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for fans of Man vs Wild.......2007-08-02

This is a great book for anyone who has seen Man vs Wild and is really wondering what its like to go through some of the life changing and life threatening experiences that this man goes through. This book not only takes you to Everest with him, but it also shows his personallity, his drive and determination, his attitude of never giving up (which is ultimately what keeps him alive), and a look at personal life and faith.

I typically don't read many books other than for studying but this was a great book and I couldn't put it down. Grylls doesn't just show you his journey, he takes you on the journey with him.

3 out of 5 stars From Eton to Everest..............2007-07-31

Bear has an easy and relaxed style of writing and uses more of a conversational technique in his prose with the added ingredient. He is humble in his abilities and also in his accomplishments. The book is a descriptive account of the full adventure to reach the peak of Everest. The writing is in dispersed with extracts from his own diary entries during the climb. The book provides a very good first hand account of the extreme difficulties and good fortune that are needed to successfully climb Everest.

Despite having an Eton education and a Tory MP as a father, Bear seems remarkably down to earth. However, the only disappointing aspect of the book is the constant reminder of the authors religious beliefs. These are tediously repeated and become more and more frequent as the levels of danger increase. They are needless and should be left to his bible classes and not to those who have paid good money to learn of his adventures.

All that is left to ask is does Bear really stay in hotels during the filming of Man vs. Wild??

I have not yet read the entirety of this book. This review is on the quality of the book itself, and not on its content.

I purchased The Kid Who Climbed Everest (The Lyons Press) because I enjoy Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild. As I flipped through the book, enjoying the pictures in the center insert, I discovered that the binding is already failing. The pages are starting to peel away from the spine, and I've only flipped the pages once.

It's rather dissappointing, though I expect I will like the content of the book very much.
