Book Description
This widely used clinical reference and text has now been fully revised and expanded, providing the latest knowledge on culturally sensitive practice with families and individuals from over 40 different ethnic groups. Each chapter demonstrates how ethnocultural factors may influence the assumptions of both clients and therapists, the issues people bring to the clinical context, and their resources for coping and problem solving. Updated throughout with essential new material, the third edition includes chapters on several additional groups. An indispensable new appendix offers a concise guide to weaving cultural information into assessment and intervention planning.

Ethnicities and Culture.......2007-03-27
This book was suggested to me by one of my professor's who happens to teach a family counseling course. She suggested that we buy this book to use in our future practices. Since I have purchased the book, I have already referred to it twice. It is highly detailed and knowledgable. I was able to use if for a presentation and for a resource on a college exit exam. I highly recommend this book to those who seek further knowledge and information on various cultures. It reviews all nationalities and cultures that exist in today's society.
Ethnicity and Family Therapy, Third Edition.......2007-01-09
This is an extremely valuable and important resource for clinicians. It provides cultural overviews that can be used in clinical work and teaching. It is a wonderful desktop resource that can facilitate the essential process of cultural consideration in clinical work with families. Monica McGoldrick's writing is clear and enjoyable.
Excellent read.......2007-01-09
OK, this book wouldn't seem especially fun to read, and I'll admit that a counselor friend had to recommend it to me, but I find it simply fascinating. As I read through the chapters about my family's heritage, I really found it compelling that many of the the behaviors and values that I take for granted are not simply from my family, but are in large measure common to my ethnicity. Then, as I read about the heritage of my fiancee's family, it really put things into perspective for me. Behaviors that I might have found rude or offensive in my cultural framework have a perfectly natural, and honorable, root in thiers. If understanding is the key to acceptance, this book really helped me understand and communicate much better, and begin to accept and live within different cultures. This book gives an excellent framework to explain how different ethnicitys come to value different things. Highly recommended.
A great way to expand cultural knowledge.......2006-11-10
This is a wonderful and easy to read book that attempts to educate the reader about the culture and divesity of various ethnic groups. The book is divided into racial categories, which are subdivided into specific countries to give the reader a flavor of the diversity within these groups. Anyone who works with ethnic minorities should read this book to get a general sense of how cultural similarities and differences within racial and cultural categories impact family dynamics, the theraputic experience, and adjustment into the American culture.
Very Relevant.......2006-08-07
This is a great book for finding out how to bring people of differing race to an understanding. For instance, I remember one example where White students, approximately between the ages of thirteen and sixteen, were, as part of a therapeutic course, required to refer to all Black people in their environment as 'sir'.This simple sign of respect was a great way to dismantle racism.
Book Description
This book provides the foundation for understanding the theory and pracitce of compilers. Revised and updated, it reflects the current state of compilation.
Every chapter has been completely revised to reflect developments in software engineering, programming languages, and computer architecture that have occurred since 1986, when the last edition published. The authors, recognizing that few readers will ever go on to construct a compiler, retain their focus on the broader set of problems faced in software design and software development.
Computer scientists, developers, and aspiring students that want to learn how to build, maintain, and execute a compiler for a major programming language.
Customer Reviews:
The best for getting the theoretical foundation of compilers.......2007-06-13
This is the classical reference book for compiler design. This is not an easy text because of its heavy use of mathematical notation and the algorithms are presented only in pseudo code but you will not find a more complete collection of compiler related algorithms than in this book.
Warmed over ghost of past excellence.......2007-05-19
I spent some serious quality time with the first edition (the "red dragon book"), in three main episodes over the past dozen years: 1) undergraduate compilers class, 2) industry project, and 3) parser generator implementation. During all three episodes, I was disappointed in various ways, though there is no denying that the book contains a wealth of information. As an undergraduate, I found the book somewhat impenetrable. When in industry, I found the book too abstract. When implementing a parser generator, I discovered that the book excludes important research results with regard to LR parser generation. It is the last disappointment that I will focus on.
The book presents parser generation in layers of increasing complexity, from SLR to LR to LALR, where LALR is presented as the penultimate algorithm, though LALR parsers can only handle a subset of the grammars that LR can handle. The justification for this is that the original Knuth LR algorithm is intractable for large grammars. However, an efficient, fully correct, approach for LR parser generation was published in 1977, and on top of that it appears easier to implement than efficient LALR parser generation! The red dragon book's original authors simply cannot have been unaware of this research result, but I suspect that they elected to warm over the "green dragon book" (published in 1977) rather than incorporate the state of the art as of 1986 into the "red dragon book". Now here we are another 20 years later, and as near as I can tell from reading through available online information, the "purple dragon book" is perpetuating this omission. The result of the red dragon book is that we have an entire generation of computer scientists who have been mislead to think that LALR is somehow superior to LR, and the purple dragon book is setting things up for yet another generation to be mislead.
The new cover is awesome! Long live the Purple Dragon!.......2007-05-04
The CGI cover looks great! I only wish it stretched along the spine of the book like in the previous editions.
Useful book.......2007-02-20
I'm a computer engineering student and I purchased the book for my programming languages and compilers course. At present I still haven't completed the course, but I've already found this book pretty useful so far. The concepts are clearly and well explained, so that I could better understand some points that I found rather obscure during the lessons. It's being of great help, so I'm very satisfied of this purchase.
Great book but...........2007-02-15
This is the numero uno among compiler books. But whoever designed the new cover out to be have their sketch pens stuffed down their throat. Why change the cover! The previous book was called the dragon book and was a red dragon. No one ever changed Feynman's lecture books by painting the cover blue, did they? Addison Wesley should take their new edition cover design and stuff it.

VERY helpful for organizing WHAT you need to know........2007-08-29
I hadnt revisited all of the info taught to me in college since 99. After using this book along with review questions and answers book from the same author, its all coming back to me in an organized manner finally sinking in solidly. This is like all of your education in notes better organized and accessible. A MUST for passing the RVT! Use with other product for best results!
One of the Best Books for Techs.......2006-04-04
I have read and used many textbooks as a technician and this has to be one of the most helpful. The chapter breakdowns allow you to find information very easily and quickly. It's also great for those times when you need to remember something that you just can't figure out. The quizzes in the book relate more to the NVTE than most books.
Great review for the VTNE!.......2006-03-04
I am taking a class that reviews the items that are on the Veterinary Technician National and State Examinations and this is the textbook we use for the class. It has everything you will need to pass the exams to become certified and/or registered!
A great book to have .......2006-02-26
This book is wonderful for indepth information on certain procedures. However when I first bought this book I was a little intimidated becasue of how " technical " it was. Since I was just starting out in the field. But now I love it! Alot of very useful information. I also think this is a book you need in order to become a CVT.
A reader from WI.......1999-12-04
This is the best review book out there for the veterinary technician. If it is either for studying for boards or just to review, this book will make the process less stressful.
Book Description
How does one define the concept of "family"? Is it primarily a biological link, or purely a social construction? Can it be a combination of both? Does it have to be? In this age of single parents, alternative lifestyles, and joint custody, "family" has become a fluid term which reflects a sweeping change in society -- from the rigid structure of the nuclear family to a more diverse and inclusive circle of people that one refers to as Òfamily.Ó In this revision of their classic work in family therapy issues and techniques, the authors propose Òa new and more comprehensive way to think about human development and the life cycle,Ó by widening the perspective of family therapy to include diversity of family forms and lifestyles, as well as cultural diversity. Their expanded view of family includes the impact and issues at multiple levels of the human system: the individual, family households, the extended family, the community, the cultural group, and the larger society. The new edition offers lively and dynamic writing, with contributed chapters by some of the best-known therapists and experts in family therapy. Some issues with expanded focus include race, class, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, spirituality, politics, work, time, community, values, and belief systems. Social workers, psychologists, nurses, and family therapists.
Customer Reviews:
The Old Testament is less DOGMATIC........2007-10-22
This disappointing book
is pretentious and
transparently biased.
I prefer a textbook
I can learn from and trust,
to one where I find myself tolerating
stale slogans and stereotypes.
racist, biased, and lacking in helpful information.......2006-12-31
The lack of practical, usable information in this book was unbelievable. Maybe if you have never, ever, in any way considered these issues it would be helpful, but I doubt it, as there was nothing that delved beyond surface, common sense information. The gross overgenderalizations about race and culture were offesive and shocking coming from people in the field. The only thing I took from the book was a heightened awareness of the judgemental biases of people -- even those claiming to be fighting against those things.
Decent textbook hindered by political biases.......2006-11-04
This textbook is a decent summary of the various family life cycle issues. However, the authors' obvious political biases and leanings interfere with a balanced perspective and with the content of the book. Several people in my master's level class found the book to be biased and unhelpful in certain areas.
The book should not be recommended for University programs.......2005-11-12
I am very disappointed, could not force myself to finish it! This book should not be recommended for University programs. It is biased, full of stereotyping, and has "popular", rather than scientific references (with all my respect to Daniel Goldman's Emotional Intelligence commercial success). Textbooks should be professional and free of political agendas.
Caustic Personal Agenda.......2005-09-02
I actually looked forward to reading this text, but upon furthr examination, found it to be a very "glass-half-empty" approach to the family life cycle. It is blatantly obvious that the 2 authors have their own political agenda to cram down our throats. Their vitrolic accusations against males, whites, Christians, etc. insight me to become an advocate for those they discriminate against - to expose their hypocritic instructions to be respectful, empathetic and flexible toward others. And by the way, for "experts" to use the term "homophobic" is a clinical and education travesty. To discriminate against those who do not condone the lifestyle by calling them names is simply politically correct, immature, and evidence of their agenda.
Book Description
Small wonder that, at nine years old, Monica Holloway develops a fascination with the local funeral home. With a father who drives his Ford pickup with a Kodak movie camera sitting shotgun just in case he sees an accident, and whose home movies feature more footage of disasters than of his children, Monica is primed to become a morbid child.
Yet in spite of her father's bouts of violence and abuse, her mother's selfishness and prim denial, and her siblings' personal battles and betrayals, Monica never succumbs to despair. Instead, she forges her own way, thriving at school and becoming fast friends with Julie Kilner, whose father is the town mortician.
She and Julie prefer the casket showroom, where they take turns lying in their favorite coffins, to the parks and grassy backyards in her hometown of Elk Grove, Ohio. In time, Monica and Julie get a job driving the company hearse to pick up bodies at the airport, yet even Monica's growing independence can't protect her from her parents' irresponsibility, and from the feeling that she simply does not deserve to be safe. Little does she know, as she finally strikes out on her own, that her parents' biggest betrayal has yet to be revealed.
Throughout this remarkable memoir of her dysfunctional, eccentric, and wholly unforgettable family, Monica Holloway's prose shines with humor, clear-eyed grace, and an uncommon sense of resilience. Driving with Dead People is an extraordinary real-life tale with a wonderfully observant and resourceful heroine.
Customer Reviews:
A book that makes you think..........2007-07-02
Being from Monica's hometown, I initially wanted to read the book for fun- to read stories about our town and the people in it. What I didn't bargain for was the amount of self-reflection it perpetuated. Not only is it true that it is one of those books you can't put down (I finished it in just two days) but it is one of those books that you'll be thinking about for weeks after you are finished reading it.
Great in the end.......2007-07-02
When I was reading this book, I kept wondering where it was going. I kept having flashbacks of the Glass Castle. I liked the first half but then got kinda bored with Monica's schooling and when she went to CA and I was wondering what is the point because it didn't really seem to be going anywhere. But then when her sister became depressed, it really got interesting. The way the author writes about what happened in her family is profound. I really felt for her and her sister Joann. I hated the parents so much that I wanted to kill them!! These girls have been through so much and I truly felt their emotions at the end of this novel. I think Monica is a great writer and my heart goes out to her.
Bravo! Monica!.......2007-06-26
Bravo, Monica! Superb writing! It was difficult to put it down. You are a gifted writer. I am so sorry that when you passed through my life "back in the day," I had no sense of where you came from. Blessings! Blessings! Keep on writing! You have a gift.
Loved, loved, loved this book..........2007-06-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author manages to make you both laugh and cry...sometimes within one sentence. I hope to read more by this very talented author.
Misses the mark in making (too) light of heavy stuff.......2007-05-26
Holloway's attempt to put a funny spin on an unfunny, abusive childhood in her memoir, more appropriately titled, "Transporting Cadavers," is unsuccessful. A vaguely cruel father, an under-supportive mother, distant sisters and an addict brother round out the cast of her dysfunctional family. Having experienced her father's meanness regularly in her youth, she inexplicably chooses to nurture a relationship with him in adulthood, until a depressed sister shares her recollections of his earlier inappropriate behavior. When confronted, he makes a seemingly damning statement, after which she ends further contact. The third sister is maligned for her unwillingness to jump on the bandwagon. Then there is the inclusion of a dream involving her father and sister while in a church, over the top and adding nothing to the plot. Additionally, the contention that the intent of a bedtime routine of her mothers was meant to "prep" the sisters for abuse is a tough sell. Driving with Dead People is a mediocre memoir. Many times better: Jeannette Walls' The Glass Castle, Dominika Dery's The Twelve Little Cakes, David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty Some Day and Meredith Hall's Without a Map.

Additional user-friendly enhancements include: * a concise summary of changes in the TNM classification since the previous edition at the start of every chapter * color-coordinated page tabs for easy access between chapters * a CD-ROM packaged with each Manual containing printable copies of each of the book's 45 Staging Forms for both individual and institutional use * a comprehensive index The Sixth Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual and Handbook remains the essential reference for oncologists, pathologists, surgeons, cancer registrars, and medical professionals worldwide to assure that all those taking care of cancer patients will be trained in the language of cancer staging
Customer Reviews:
essential for the oncologist and tumor registry.......2005-11-17
This is not the stuff of bedroom reading, but it does exactly what it should: it covers one of the central tasks of oncology completely.
Why not buy the handbook? The difference is mainly in the extras: more discussion, the free checklists, the electronic forms, and a larger more readable format. Personally I find staging a desk reference situation and I think the manual is better suited: I really cant imagine using a valuable pocket for the manual. (For the electronically interested various versions exist for PDA).
So whats in the book? Each anatomical site is introduced with a description of the changes from the 5th edition, the anatomy and regional lymphatics (where relevant) are described, and then the rules for staging are outlined. Summary tables, prognostic factors and a liberal reference section complete each site.
There are predone checklists, diagrams and ICD codes to help those setting up registries all of which come in electronic form as well.

Customer Reviews:
MUST HAVE.......2007-10-22
IF YOU ARE A TRUE BIPOLAR, YOU MUST HAVE THIS WORK BOOK. IT WILL MAKE YOU UNDERSTAND EVERY ASPECT OF OUR CREATIVE DISORDER. PLEASE DO NOT DO DRUGS SUCH AS BOOSE, POT, COKE, ETC... THEY WILL MAKE GET A FALSE DIAGNOSIS. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF AND YOUR DOCTOR. SERIQUIL AND LITHIUM ARE THE BEST MEDS FOR ME. BUT DO NOT MIX WITH BOOSE OR OTHER SELF MEDICATING SUBSTANCES. SINCERLY YOURS DEVIL DOG
Something for Everyone.......2007-10-04
Having been diagnosed very late in life a few years ago, I constantly research materials that are simple, informative and practical. This book meets all criteria. In fact, I have given it to my therapist who really appreciates it and am now purchasing it for newly diagnosed friends or family members who have BP. It targets all audiences: newly diagnosed; experienced but needs some reminders; experienced but wants to review certain sections; and family members.
Covers many different angles and stages of Bipolar.......2007-07-22
I wasn't sure what to expect when i ordered this book. A bipolar friend of mine suggested the book (not the workbook) written by Monica Ramirez Basco. I haven't read it yet but plan to. I think the workbook is great. It is a great way to learn to retrain the way you think. There are parts of the workbook that apply to me right now, parts that I've already been through and will probably not read, and parts about things I haven't dealt with yet too. It's one of those things that will help you out now and you can pick it back up months/years later and it will help you again.
Better for Bipolar I patients, than Bipolar II........2007-07-11
It seems to be much more for Bipolar I sufferers. I have Bipolar II and much of the material in the book didn't really apply to me. Though I'm sure it would be good if one had bipolar II, and I'm still working through the book in the areas that do apply to me.
VERY intensive and extensive........2007-06-22
I can't say this book is easy to do. Usually I rush through workbooks, but this one I am doing less than 20 pages every other day so its wisdom sinks in. After 15 years diagnosed Bipolar 2 you'd think I know myself and the illness's impact. I obviously didn't. It was really scary at first, writing about how the illness has affected my life and those around me and really thinking about my specific symptoms. When I am well, my husband says I live like I have no illness, which creates problems later. Now I know that I have to change my "good day" living to prevent "bad day" nightmares. It's pretty harsh to tally up the toll the illness has taken and the small and large changes I have to make in my life. But the book IS a God send for it really allows me to see my triggers and what causes stress for me and how to live more sensibly. It is like taking a mirror and seeing the illness in bright light around me and finding ways to keep it small and managable. It's made me more realistic about my limitations so I'll stay safe and sane. (I hate knowing I have limitations!) Honestly, it covers everything, from reasons you create for NOT killing yourself when depressed or psychotic to REAL help on weight loss. There isn't one part of the illness that it does not address and force you to check if it is a part of your life, and if so, how to handle it when it rears its ugly head. Slowly, I feel like I can control a lot more than I thought I could. Before I let the illness throw me like a rag doll in a tornado. Now I see the responsibility I have to myself and my loved ones to prevent or manage episodes and the book totally makes that possible. If I have to have limits at least I can control them a lot more than I thought. It just takes a willingness to really see the damage and how to head it off at the pass. If you aren't ready for REAL WORK, get another book that let's you stay a victim. If you are ready to deal with the reality of what you face, buy this NOW.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent "Make-You-Think" Resource!.......2007-08-31
I was more determined to pick up a book before the wedding than my husband was, but we were both insanely glad we got this. It really makes you face situations that would take YEARS to come up, and it was really the best tool we could have had before we made the big leap.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to anyone looking at marriage.
so so.......2007-08-26
It's bit overwhelming. It is going to take me a long time to go through it, even though it is a thiny book. I would say that whole chapters are basically one question posed in many ways. I can totally see my boyfriend running away from me if I ask him all 1001 questions ;) I guess next time I should go for 10 questions that you have to ask before committing.
1001 questions to ask before you get married.......2007-07-24
This was one of two books I ordered on this subject and this one was the most comprehensive-by far! Dicusses child rearing, what part religion is expected to play in your lives, where to spend holidays, vacations plans, finances... There is also a section on special situation such as if your spouse is in the military, a non-citizen, a criminal, a celebrity or is much older or younger than you. These are tough questions that likely will not casually come up and are often overlooked.
wish I didn't buy it..........2007-07-20
It was a waste of my money. The questions were all ones I've heard about so many other times, and the format of the questions wasn't fun or even very interesting...
great book.......2007-06-19
I bought this book to learn more about my fiance as well as myself. I wanted to see if this really is the right path for us and if we would work together as a team- parents and husband and wife. I loved this book because it actually got him to sit down with me and we actually thought about our answers and discussed how we felt. The book covers everything. The only cons were that it can be too specific at times (ie marrying a criminal, marrying an immigrant, etc.) but if it doesn't apply to you, you can always skip it. It covers everything from moving in, to children, to religion, to sex. It's a great book and I highly recommend it.

More conflicting and confusing than helpful.......2007-05-25
You're probably investigating this book because like me, you're already interested in the concept of "inflammatory foods" but you've spent a lot of time on the Internet trying to ascertain exactly which foods are inflammatory and which are not. You're found a lot of conflicting advice from the usual Oprah Gurus: Weil says avoid chicken, Perricone says chicken is great. Both say avoid pasta and sugar, and eat whole grains, but their fruit, veggie and legume lists vary. What to do?
Reinagel has attempted to clear the air by creating the "Inflammation Rating" (I.R.) system which weighs many factors such as glycemic load and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals. Unfortunately, you're going to come away even more confused. Not only does she contradict nearly everything the other Oprah Gurus say (for example, with an I.R. of -135, a serving of the sainted whole grain millet is twice as inflammatory as a serving of pasta) but she contradicts HERSELF repeatedly.
For example, she writes "Certain foods...such as pineapple...have potent - almost druglike - anti-inflammatory actions...They can be used to great advantage in an inflammation-reducing diet." So then why does a cup of fresh pineapple appear in the Rating Chart at -37, a cup of canned -108? That's worse than a frozen waffle (-85)!
To her credit, she also repeatedly says you're supposed to use the rating chart to balance inflammatory foods with anti-inflammatory ones...you're NOT intended to avoid foods with negative ratings. For example, add onions or tumeric to those beans. And she warns against the monotonous consumption of so-called "super foods" and urges us instead to eat a varied, wholesome and colorful diet. Which includes most of those beans, grains, fruits and nuts on the negative end of the scale, so what's the point of even having a scale?
She does suggest that you have your doctor do a blood test for C-reactive protein (CRP) which will tell you whether you have inflammation or not. I'd say first find out whether you even have a problem before you expend too much energy trying to fix it.
I kept flashing back to Frances Moore Lappe's DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET which taught us to tediously combine various foods with the goal of "protein complementarity." That concept has long since been debunked...I'm guessing that eventually, the I.R. diet plan will end up in the same dust heap of failed promises.
view of another nutrition writer.......2007-04-12
Inflammation is a very important topic that writers are eager to exploit. This one has some good information, but leaves out much that is vital to understanding inflammation. Rating foods for inflammation gives a false sense of good and bad foods, becaus inflammation is only one of several factors to judge the value of a food. For better treatment of the subject try THE INFLAMMATION SYNDROME and HONEST NUTRITION.
How many revolutionary diet books can a culture digest in a given year?.......2007-02-21
These books are all so dubious, and so enrapture folks who don't recognize the necessity of double blind studies, that it makes one think that one should require more science classes in high school.
This Book is Ahead of its Time!.......2007-01-23
It is only a matter of time before all of the immunological research out there finally makes it into the mainstream and folks will realize how big this book really is. Having taken (and barely survived) a college level immunology class, I can tell you with some certainty that the role inflammation plays in our overall health and longevity is a complex topic to tackle in a book like this. The author should be given great credit for doing something that the scientific community has yet to do and that is to communicate how and why it is vital to reduce inflammation in our bodies to help allow our immune system to work most optimally. Even better is that the recipes in this book (unlike some of the cookbooks and health books I own) actually work! And, many of them are low salt or salt free and they still actually taste good.
