A must have for independent or green sustainable lifestyle........2007-09-16
We don't live on a farm, but we make every effort to shop, stock, and hand make many of the items we use in our lives. It is really the only way to avoid many of the herbacides, pestacides, and hormones prevelent in our food and other household products. On our tiny town lot, we garden as much as we can, and I do put seasonal organically grown produce by. If you are a fan of Carla Emery, this book is written in the same vain but with additional and different suggestions on the same subject matter. I was especially fond of the "make it yourself herbal pet care products." and the home made gift ideas I have gleaned are whirling in my head for the holidays. I have already saved much more than the cost of the book!
Good Book, Small Print.......2007-09-12
I agree with a lot of the reviewers that the print is small. But this book is packed with tons of info about country living. After having lived in the city for years we now live in the country and have found a lot of helpful hints. It's divided quite well and particular topics are easy to locate.
Excellent book........2007-07-07
This is a great book. I think I like "the encyclopedia of country living" better but I waffle back and forth. In this book you'll find all you need to know about living in the country and plenty of info that will be usefull even to those who don't. I should mention to those of you with poor eyesight that this book has very small print so have your glasses handy. That however is the "only" downfall to this book and I really don't see it as a problem at all. If you buy this book you will not be dissapointed.
Even my grandma was amazed.......2007-04-27
This book is filled from cover to cover with great information on how to do things yourself. I love learning about how to do things the old-fashioned way. With modern technology so easy to crash, I feel safer knowing that I can survive on my knowledge a little better after having this book. Some of the ideas my grandma could even remember doing with her grandma. There is something to say about the strength of time honored tradition.
Live Off the Land.......2007-04-10
Learn to become completely self-sufficient and live off the land. This also makes an interesting read if you want to learn how things used to be done pre-technology.

Songs you love to sing to yourself or with friends.......1999-02-19
This book contains the great old country-western songs, from back when country-western was truly country-western and not just another rock n' roll mutant. These are the songs that are fun to sing, and that you CAN sing, with simple yet fun arrangements for the musically challenged. After only one exposure to this book, I was belting out a fairly good rendition of "Back In The Saddle Again," and a couple of friends even joined in, looking over my shoulder at the pages. The most fun is being able to read all the words that you didn't always catch when you first heard the song. Great for singing around the campfire, piano, or even the dinner table. I hope Readers' Digest decides to bring this one back, because it's a valuable reference and a lot of enjoyment.
A great resource for old time and classic country bands.......1998-08-21
Unfortunately, this terrific book has been out of print for a while, but it is prime time to bring it back. Old time and classic country bands are experiencing a huge resurgence. If the Reader's Digest Publishing Company is listening... Please reprint!

In the year following South Africa's first democratic elections, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to investigate human rights abuses committed under the apartheid regime. Presided over by God's own diplomat, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the first hearings of the commission were held in April 1996. During the following two years of hearings, South Africans were daily exposed to revelations and public testimony about their traumatic past, and--like the world that looked on--continued to discover that the relationship between truth and reconciliation is far more complex than they had ever imagined.
Antjie Krog, a prominent South African poet and journalist, led the South African Broadcasting Corporation team that for two years reported daily on the hearings. Extreme forms of torture, abuse, and state violence were the daily fare of the Truth Commission. Many of those involved with its proceedings, including Krog herself, suffered personal stresses--ill health, mental breakdown, dissolution of relationships--in the face of both the relentless onslaught of the truth and the continuing subterfuges of unrelenting perpetrators. Like the Truth Commission itself, Country of My Skull gives central prominence to the power of the testimony of the victims, combining a journalist's reportage skills with the poet's ability to give voice to stories previously unheard. --Rachel Holmes
Book Description
Ever since Nelson Mandela dramatically walked out of prison in 1990 after twenty-seven years behind bars, South Africa has been undergoing a radical transformation. In one of the most miraculous events of the century, the oppressive system of apartheid was dismantled. Repressive laws mandating separation of the races were thrown out. The country, which had been carved into a crazy quilt that reserved the most prosperous areas for whites and the most desolate and backward for blacks, was reunited. The dreaded and dangerous security force, which for years had systematically tortured, spied upon, and harassed people of color and their white supporters, was dismantled. But how could this country--one of spectacular beauty and promise--come to terms with its ugly past? How could its people, whom the oppressive white government had pitted against one another, live side by side as friends and neighbors?
To begin the healing process, Nelson Mandela created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, headed by the renowned cleric Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Established in 1995, the commission faced the awesome task of hearing the testimony of the victims of apartheid as well as the oppressors. Amnesty was granted to those who offered a full confession of any crimes associated with apartheid. Since the commission began its work, it has been the central player in a drama that has riveted the country. In this book, Antjie Krog, a South African journalist and poet who has covered the work of the commission, recounts the drama, the horrors, the wrenching personal stories of the victims and their families. Through the testimonies of victims of abuse and violence, from the appearance of Winnie Mandela to former South African president P. W. Botha's extraordinary courthouse press conference, this award-winning poet leads us on an amazing journey.
Country of My Skull captures the complexity of the Truth Commission's work. The narrative is often traumatic, vivid, and provocative. Krog's powerful prose lures the reader actively and inventively through a mosaic of insights, impressions, and secret themes. This compelling tale is Antjie Krog's profound literary account of the mending of a country that was in colossal need of change.

Personal recollections.......2007-08-23
A. Krog writes an amazing piece revolving around the events pertinent to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the emergence of the African National Congress in the politics of South Africa. Graphic descriptions of militant and counterinsurgent armed activity in the apartheid government, and first person testimony to the TRC of human rights violations from many parties. Krog's recollections are necessarily emotionally derived and sometimes difficult for this reason to follow analytically, particularly to one not immersed in South African history and cultures. Extensive use of indigenous languages with helpful translations and a glossary of common local parlance included, which makes the reading much more interpretable. The book is written assuming the reader is familiar with the political events immediately prior to the institution of the TRC and the dissolution of apartheid politics. An excellent piece for any world history or political science student.
Truth's many complexities........2007-03-08
Antjie Krog writes with a poet's power of observation both with inner feelings as well as to witness the outer complexities of people's pain and truth. Whose truth, which truth, and at what time? The Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings which she followed along with many other reporters, becomes a focal point for the process of hearing these complexities as well as offering the possibilityes for healing in a country struggling to understand the tensions between global change and the bonds of tribal and cultural loyalties and traditions. Krog offers us a chance to participate in this as well as to reflect on our own healing processes and sort out the complexities of many truths we live with.
Country of my skull!.......2007-01-13
A great book, telling a part of a nation's history, that must never been forgotten
One more step on the road to Zimbabwe.......2006-06-12
As a British engineer living in South Africa for 15 years I obviously lived on another planet compared to this lady. Maybe because I worked in black townships and saw things as an outside observer I was not burdened by self loathing and idealistic fantasy that make up much of this work. Sure bad things happen in old wars in Africa or new ones like Iraq, but I can't help feeling that we have been here before. Atrocities happened in Rhodesia but despite the false dawn and liberal accolades that welcomed Mugabe in the same way them as they welcomed Mandela now, we ended up with worse country not a better one. I think that when we all look back on this period in years to come and unburdened by the current plague of political correctness that blights our times, we will realise that those who should ask for forgiveness are the liberal media elites who destroyed South Africa and the hopes of all its people both black and white.
powerful and important account of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Hearings............2006-02-20
This is simply a fantastic piece of literature, written by a very talented, brave, and steadfast journalist, the great Antjie Krog. Krog, an Afrikaaner (South-African born Caucasian), as part of the South African Broadcasting Corporation's commitment to covering the ongoing stories of torture, abuse, murder and countless other violations to human rights revealed at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Hearings in 1996, recounts many, of a cross section of stories, here in this book. We also get a strong sense of the psychological and emotional toll it takes, to bare witness to the stories, told by, both, victims and victimizers. Children were left orphans, wives were left widows, casualties were left permanently disfigured and disabled, in the aftermath of extensive race riots in South Africa, following apartheid (or the enforced segregation of Blacks from Whites) in neighboring townships, throughout the town of Soweto, and beyond.
Just a note to anyone who intends to read this book. Please keep in mind that many of the stories, recounted in Krog's novel are graphic and very disturbing. However, they are also invaluably important. I believe this is a story everyone should be aware of. Many people heard the words "apartheid" "Soweto" and "Truth and Reconciliation Commission," in passing on the news and in the media, without really having a sense of the significance of the very important events, taking place in South Africa in 1996. This is your chance to truly come to understand the degree to which racism destroys communities, divides people and ultimately leads to fateful consequences.

Book Description
A household icon of the environmental movement, Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) may be the most quoted conservationist in history. A Sand County Almanac has sold millions of copies and his lyrical writings are venerated for their perceptions about land and how people might live in concert with the whole community of life.
But who is the man behind the words? How did he arrive at his profound and poetic insights, inspiring generations of environmentalists? Building on past scholarship and a fresh study of Leopold's unpublished archival materials, Julianne Lutz Newton retraces the intellectual journey that generated such passion and intelligence.
Aldo Leopold's Odyssey illuminates his lifelong quest for answers to a fundamental issue: how can people live prosperously on the land and keep it healthy, too? Leopold's journey took him from Iowa to Yale to the Southwest to Wisconsin, with fascinating stops along the way to probe the causes of early land settlement failures, contribute to the emerging science of ecology, and craft a new vision for land use.
More than a biography, this articulate volume is a guide to one man's intellectual growth, and an inspirational resource for anyone pondering the relationships between people and the land.
Customer Reviews:
A surprising, penetrating, lyrical study.......2006-11-06
Readers who think they know Leopold, whether from his classic A Sand County Almanac or from earlier writings about him, are in for a real surprise. We see here, far better than ever before, the science underlying Leopold's conservation thought; he was at the forefront of ecology, not merely a consumer of it. Even more, we see how Leopold moved step by step to the (for him) painful realization that true conservation was not possible without significant cultural change, which in turn required committed conservationists to step up and challenge dominant values and institutions. Newton shows clearly that it was Leopold's idea of land health, not his land ethic, that stood at the center of his mature conservation thought. She shows how land health, once carefully crafted, transformed his thinking on nearly every aspect of conservation. And she explains vividly-- far better than any other scholar--the precise meanings that Leopold attached to his famous ethical admonition to preserve the land's "integrity, stability, and beauty." Why did Leopold resist the federal conservation programs of the New Deal Era? How did he redefine wilderness over the final decade of his life and reshape his chief reasons for protecting it? What did he view as the main goals of wildlife management, and why did he turn against many basic assumptions in his classic book Game Management? What kind of startlingly new ecology text did he have in works when he died? These and other questions are answered for the first time, in this major work that is brimming with new information and new interpretations. The most sobering realization one has, though, upon finishing this splendid book, is that today's conservation cause might cite Leopold often but hardly at all understands who he was and what he thought. This is not just the best book we have on Leopold, it might well be the best book we've had on any conservation intellect.

Not for Food Lovers.......2007-10-22
Chris Kimball was signing copies of this book at Toronto's Cookbook Store last week. I generally find CI magazine useful and have liked some of the cookbooks, so I looked in.
Most of the recipes in this book did not appeal, even a little. But I was especially interested in the Ebinger's blackout cake recipe included in this book. This is a badly missed lost recipe from my own childhood. So I still contemplated buying a copy. Then I tasted Kimball's samples. Yuck.
The two items I tasted (both cookies) were extremely sweet. Sure, this is an individual taste thing. But these two items were gross. Both were called "Aunt something-or-other's ...".
The first one, a bar cookie, tasted okay, but I wouldn't willingly eat something so sweet. The second one was what looked like two shortbreads sandwiching some chocolate filling. Hoping to kill the aftertaste of the first one, I bit in. This one was so sweet that I actually gagged.
I asked a store employee about other recipes in the book. She was very politic, but pretty clear that I wouldn't likely enjoy this food. If these were samples of the best of this book, I wasn't buying.
Not My Cup of Tea.......2007-10-08
I just got this book the other day. It is well written and has a suitable number of pictures. The writers have also added a small blurb on their opinion/changes/suggestions for the recipe which is very helpful. My book came with half of the pages in upside down but I was able to correct the issue because it is a ring-type binder. I only gave the book 3 stars because many of the recipes had no appeal to me and probably should have stayed lost. I feel lucky if I am able to get a half dozen usable recipes out of a cookbook. I have yet to actually cook any of the recipes but have high hopes because of the past successes from other books from America's Test Kitchen.

Tons of ideas in this book! .......2007-10-12
Are you the type of decorator that needs to see photos of actual decorating ideas?....or (by contrast) are you the type of decorator that needs alot of writing to describe decorating ideas?
Hum?
...Well, if you are the type of "visual" decorator that loves to look at photos of decorating ideas ,in order to be inspired, then this is a GREAT book to own!
I am a visual learner, and I love to look at photos to be inspired when I re-decorate, so this book was an amazing find for me.
The title of this book says: "750 decorating ideas ", and the title is indeed, absolutely correct!
PS: I also purchased a similar book called "House Beautiful's 750 decorating ideas", and I loved that book also. Both are truly inspirational for the visual learners, like me.
Loved it!.......2006-05-19
I will definitely refer back to this book often. It is full of ideas, advice, suggestions and inspiration for all rooms and all areas of decorating. Fun, creative and inspriring! Not a how-to.

This is more than your average baby name book: unlike the dozens of mass-market paperbacks available, Town & Country Baby Names has the style and elegance to make an exquisite gift. Stunningly designed and produced, with charming line drawings throughout, it’s a lovely and useful resource at an excellent price. The introduction provides guidelines to consider when naming a baby, from researching the family tree for names to knowing the pitfalls of choosing a unisex or trendy name. Each entry includes the name’s origin and meaning (Claire comes from Latin, and means “clear and bright”; Stephen, from the Greek, means “crown”), and special features suggest possibilities such as Favorite Names from the Garden and Beloved Names from Children’s Literature.

Ordinary Baby Name Book.......2007-05-13
This book is definitely for the "Sarah and David" set. We were looking for something with a little more "panache" for our daughter and found the names in this book to be the requisite classics that you would expect from a book compiled by the publishers of "Town & Country" magazine. I will say that it was organized very well into specific sections, but I do recommend that if you are looking for a more original children's name, that you look at the "Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana" book.
