It's about love; friendship, care, or family then this would be the book for you. There are

A couple of story's I like in this book but one of my favorites is called My problem. Its

About an eleven year old boy who has trouble eating to much and becomes over weight

And the kids at his school make fun of him for example they call him fat so or four by

Four until one day he got into a program called tops witch changed his whole life. There

Are a lot more different stories by different authors and most of them are your age. So if

You read this book I promise you, you will love this book just give it a try. When I read

This book I felt like if some of the story's where telling part of my life and if I was the

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!!.......2007-01-07

Full of heart warming stories.I could not put it down! Some I favored stories more than others. I strongly recommend this book 4 anyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sad and good at the same time!.......2006-11-28

This was a good book because most of the stories were from kids my age (11). Some stories were really funny! Espically the crushes! But there were a few really sad ones where I almost cried out loud. In school even! One was when a girl's mother dies and she actually sees her getting hit by a car! i thought about how i would feel if my mom died and i saw her getting hit. That one almost made me cry! Really, it did!
And another one was when a girl's best best friend dies! Of cancer! That one was really sad! I almost cried when i read that one too because of all the stuff that had happened to this girl before she met her friend. IT was sad because i thought of my friends and how sad I would be if my best friend, Hannah, died. It was said!

Trust me, you'll laugh and you'll cry, but this book was really REALLY GREAT!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-07-03

I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10

After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.

I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!

In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.

Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best!.......2005-12-03

I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing insights.......2005-12-02

I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.

3 out of 5 stars Almost useless.......2005-05-02

The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
arched nose - creativity
...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.

Book Description

In Soul Graffiti   Mark Scandrette—writer, poet, and leader in the Emergent church movement—uses vivid stories of his own life and the lives of the many people he has encountered in his home in the Mission District of San Francisco to explore what “good news of God” might mean for our particular time and place. He seeks to answer the central question:

“How can we be about making a life in the way of Jesus?” Soul Graffiti is a simple and lyrical exploration of the essential message of Jesus as it relates to the experiences of contemporary spiritual seekers. He integrates theological insight with awareness of human psychology, culture, and daily life. Written to appeal to the sensibilities of those who inhabit a post-Christendom milieu, Mark Scandrette’s deepest hope is to give readers greater motivation for, and a fuller sense of what it means to make a life in, the way of Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Graffiti Finds a Savior in the Streets.......2007-10-17

Mark does not just write about philosophy or ideals, he tells the stories of a Christian life that is actively embodying the urges of Jesus Christ. Soul Graffiti speaks to those who see the world from an artistic, mystical, and sacred perspective. He speaks to the urban injustices that are happening right next door and how God is an active participant in the lives of the low and forgotten. As a student, artist, and socially conscious Christian, this book is an encouragement to my aching that Jesus' teachings were not meant to only be read, but lived. For those looking to serve a gospel Jesus -- a Messiah who is daring, dirty, poetic, and inspired by compassion -- Mark gives you eyes to see the Teacher's footsteps in the abandoned places less traveled.

5 out of 5 stars A practical and thought-provoking book........2007-09-17

Mark's book is both practical and entertaining. His stories ground the ideas of God's Kingdom in real terms and show the adventure of a life lived in pursuit of God's heart for people. I've done a quick read-through, but I expect to go through the book again more slowly--with other people, I hope-- taking time to process his suggested topics for discussion and to implement his experiments in Kingdom living.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Graffiti is a gentle book, one that I was sad to finish........2007-07-06

There is a word that you rarely hear nowadays - gentle. Our times seem to call out people & things that are bold, that are fierce, that can do things that get noticed. You can see this fierce world raging in urban streets, in popular media and (sadly) in many communities of faith.

Mark Scandrette is gentle - in a way that pulls people into his story and in the process a much bigger story. FMark, his wife Lisa and their kids Hailey, Noah or Isaiah live in the Mission District of San Francisco. To say they live there is not enough - they inhale all that this area has to offer, they are colorful portraits in the multi-color mural that is constantly being painted in the Mission. Mark has helped foster seven, a community of people, living in SF, aiming to "collaborate with the Creator in bringing about greater wholeness and love into the world". As a community they have committed to 7 vows: Creativity, Prayer, Community, Service, Obedience, Simplicity and Love.

Of Mark's many gifts, hospitality is a strong strand. His life/work seems like one grand, floating party - shifting from locale to locale, with celebrants weaving in and out. In the hospitality that the Scandrettes embody, drag queens sip red wine with Fuller grads, gallery owners bunk up in the small but warm Scandrette living room with recovering pastors. In the '30s & '40s in NYC, they'd call these floating crap games: dice games which is moved from place to place to evade the authorities. Mark uses art & conversation, rather than dice, but the vibe is the same: if this is not what heaven is like, it will do until we get there.

For me, much of the emerging church phenomenon fits a bus terminal metaphor - a passing point where all types of people wait for their next connection, finding safety & solace from fellow travellers. Some times the bus terminal is noisy & chaotic, other times it is as quiet as a convent. In my experience of this phenomenon, Mark mans the Traveller's Aid table, with his lovable grin & hipster hat or hair do. The table is usually a card table that Mark found discarded some where on Valencia, there are scraps of food from meals in progress, music and art scattered all about.

Images Mark wrote Soul Graffiti from his experiences at that rickety old table. It is brimming with stories of people who float in and out of life. It's rare that someone can capture their essence in a book - even more rare when at the end of 272 pages, you find that you've fallen deeper in love with that person, more in love with the you you've re-discovered, even more in love with God & Jesus and (even) church.

Soul Graffiti is a gentle book, one that I was sad to finish. Mark Scandrette is a gentle presence in my life & thousands of other folks - I can't wait for next walk we have & the next chapters he writes.

5 out of 5 stars Amen.......2007-06-18

Emergent folks often talk about following Jesus or living in the way of Jesus, but rarely is this phrase followed by story after story of a life in process of Christo-transformation. If you want to hear some of these stories and be challenged by them then go get Mark Scandrette's new book `Soul Graffiti.' The book is organized into four parts that follow the initial teaching of Jesus in gospel of Mark and the though Scandrette does occasionally give direct theological reflection, the book itself is story driven and oh so compelling. When you get done you will either be fired up that someone in the First World is actually identifiably Christian, which gives you hope for yourself or be irritated that you read a book that ended up challenging you to the core. Or both. Scandrette is a luring story-teller which enables his family and community in San Fran to untame Jesus and the gospel for the reader. He mentions taking the risk of being offended by Jesus and his teachings and his stories reveal to us just how offended we need to get, but also how rewarding a life on the way of Jesus can be. If you want to be encouraged, challenged, and have a stack of super sweet stories to bring up next time some one asks what following Jesus looks like the get it, read it, and do it.

5 out of 5 stars Making a life in the way.......2007-05-30

I was with some friends this weekend who were inspired by the The Shaping of Things to Come by Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch. They are longing for concrete examples of people who are living out the journey of apprenticeship to Jesus in a holistic way. They have been draw to many writers in the emerging church but have struggled to find the place where the ideas meet the practicality of their own lives. Mark's book is filled with stores and examples that are engaging and inspiring. I think this is the book that will help them take their next step.

Book Description

On a farmlike compound near New Hope, Pennsylvania, George Nakashima, his family, and fellow wood-workers create exquisite furniture from richly grained, rare timber. Tables, desks, chairs, and cabinets from this simple workshop grace the homes and mansions and executive boardrooms of people
who prize such excellence. In this lavishly illustrated volume, George Nakashima allows us in intimate look at his artistry, his philosophy, his life. It is the portrait of an artisan who strives to find the ideal use for each plank in order to "create an object of utility to man and, if nature
smiles, an object of lasting beauty."

The author's search for the meaning of life took him as a young man to Paris, Tokyo, and Pondicherry, India. In India, he found the inner peace for which he had been searching and began to find ways to work with timber. He writes movingly about the grandeur of ancient trees and stunning figured
woods and explains how he selects and prepares his materials. Above all, he impresses us with his devotion to discovering the inherent beauty of wood so that noble trees might have a second life as furniture. The Soul of a Tree looks at the world through the eyes of an artist and evokes the joy of
living in harmony with nature.

Able to tug at you in so many ways. A privilege to be able to buy his product.

5 out of 5 stars great book - a woodworkers essential.......2006-09-11

Alot of philosphy, mostly biographical, has a few quotes that stick:
"Man has the audacity to try to improve the tree...."

This is a MUST read for a woodworker.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and inspiring book.......2005-11-27

Like the books of James Krenov, "The Soul of a Tree" is as much a book about philosophy as it is about wood. And it's a good philosophy: slow down, take your time, play with the wood, and enjoy it. The book is really about the soul of Nakashima. He outlines some of his own personal history and how he developed his ideas about craft. There's not really much on technique here - you can certainly find better books for that - but you won't find many more inspiring.

On a personal note I had a lady call me years ago to fix up `some old furniture' she and her husband had bought years ago (in the `50's I believe.) Seems when they were young college professors they found this young oriental guy down the road who made furniture in his garage. When I looked at the furniture I told her that her young oriental friend had become quite famous and showed her this book. She was flabbergasted. What she wanted me to do was to nail up some chairs that had worked loose over time. I refused, of course, and explained to her that these were valuable pieces that should be cared for properly. I also encouraged her to contact Nakashima's Conoid Studio (if it still existed) to let them catalogue the pieces. Even after years of use by a family with kids living in the sticks the pieces were obviously crafted with meticulous care and held up surprisingly well. It was a real joy to bring them back to daily use.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Style........2001-08-27

The author omit needless wood and carve great pieces of furniture. It is like zen on wood. You will not regret the money you spent on this title.

5 out of 5 stars This man never wasted a single second of his life.......1999-10-30

George Nakashima was not only a master craftsman in his field, he was a genius. He could pick up any piece of wood and at a glance know what the end product would be to its full potential...and more.He would let the wood tell him. Even his simplest of projects 'sing' beauty and finesse. I bought the book for insperation to my own woodworking skills, and learnt much more than i expected. Included in the book is a short biography telling us of his early life, his travelings and how he ended up the man he became, his family, lifestyle, work and good natured beliefs. It certainly gave me insperation towards beautiful woodwork and i like to think I learnt a few lessons in life as well. If i was to me this man and only shake his hand I would feel honoured.......

As the title suggests, Healing the Hardware of the Soul is a unique blend of advanced scientific technique and fundamental religious principles. Dr. Daniel Amen, a graduate of Oral Roberts University, isn't promoting a strictly Christian agenda, but he makes it repeatedly clear that one of the crucial steps in achieving mental health is prayer. Depending on your beliefs, this insistence can range from pleasing to offensive.

His work is centered around the physical aspects of the brain--in some ways, it resembles a modern form of phrenology. Using detailed imaging technology, he has established connections between specific behaviors--panic disorders, depression, ADD--and over- or underactive areas of the brain. As with most new forms of medical research, his work is both lauded and ridiculed, and only further research will determine its ultimate validity.

For people anxious to put his findings to use, there are several chapters devoted to questionnaires that can be used in place of brain scans. Exercises and suggestions follow, and stay surprisingly simple--forming personal connections, seeking appropriate medical care and medications, and creating short-term, specific goals are a few old standbys. Regardless of what methods Amen is using to arrive at the solutions, it's clear he finds plenty of value in tried-and-true solutions. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Dr. Daniel Amen's breakthrough brain-healing program has helped hundreds of thousands to overcome depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder. The maverick author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life and Healing ADD now presents his proven program for repairing and strengthening our relationships, child-rearing practices, work and study routines, and, ultimately, our soulful connections, in the deepest ways possible. Guided by this book, each of us can learn to balance and optimize the parts of the brain responsible for inner growth, intimacy, and spiritual health.

Drawing upon his experience with over fourteen thousand brain-imaging studies of patients from all walks of life, Dr. Amen has developed an essential tool called the Amen Brain System Checklist, a 101-question self-test used to evaluate the five brain systems that are key to achieving and maintaining a healthy brain-soul connection. The questionnaire identifies the problem brain areas readers may need to work on, offers insight into the degree to which these imbalances affect their lives, and provides targeted strategies for each area of the brain involved with spiritual issues.

These are just a few of the many "brain prescriptions" to be found in Healing the Hardware of the Soul:

Dr. Amen's recommendations include cutting-edge advice on diet, nutritional supplements, and the judicious use of medication when needed. He also explains which medications can unbalance the brain when used improperly. Dramatic before-and-after pictures of the brain demonstrate the medical effectiveness of these clinically based healing techniques.

Whether we learn the self-help strategies of cognitive reprogramming, self-hypnosis, or nutraceutical therapy, seek out psychotherapy, or rely on prescription antidepressants and antianxiety medications, Dr. Amen's sage advice and comprehensive treatment programs give us all the tools we need to optimize our work, relationships, and spiritual connections to become the people we want to be.

5 out of 5 stars The Inspiration for my New-Found Compassion .......2007-07-26

For the first time in my life, BECAUSE of Dr. Amen's book, my outlook on sick & suffering people, is FOREVER altered. I am deeply grateful for this book, for Dr. Amen's work, his compassion, and his graciousness in sharing it with the world. I, like most people, have expended energy on judging certain people, and groups of people. After a huge spiritual & emotional break-through while reading this book, this has changed. I have true compassion and lack of judgement for sick people, because I now understand the cause and effect: healthy brain - healthy person - healthy life. As Dr. Amen says; these people need understanding - not moral judgement. Thank you Dr. Amen, for your work that has drawn me so much closer to God and my true desire in life: compassion, love, and understanding -for all.

Book Description

Drawing on the results of her unique national sex survey—and on decades of clinical practice as a sex therapist—Gina Ogden offers a revolutionary exploration of women's sexual experience. The best sex, say thousands of women, doesn't just happen in the body. It is multidimensional, connecting body, mind, heart, and soul. In The Heart and Soul of Sex, Ogden coaches readers to fully realize the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of sex, making what she calls the "ISIS Connection."

Throughout the book are firsthand stories of survey respondents, offering examples of how ordinary women—from ages eighteen to eighty-six and from many backgrounds—have found their own way to sexual expression that is deeply satisfying and even life-changing. The Heart and Soul of Sex takes the reader on a journey beyond the usual emphasis on performance, including practical exercises that can be done alone or with a partner. Ogden shows us that we can be much more than we've been told—not just fun and exciting but deeply healing, magical, and transformative.

2 out of 5 stars The writing wasn't my style.......2007-10-01

I ordered this book because i was signed up to attend the author' s workshop. I am a voracious reader but this book just didn't grab me. Perhaps it was the chatty tone. I couldn't get into it. I wanted something less "wifty". Then my dog got sick so I couldn't attend the workshop. (DOg swallowed a rawhide bone and had abdominal obstruction. Thankfully he's fine now!) I was hoping that at the workshop (in the book she writes a lot about the sharing circles she leads) I'd get into the material more. Oh well - life always seems to get in the way of great spirit-filled sexual experiences. At least that's been my experience as a busy mom and professional.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Ourselves and Our Sexuality.......2007-07-09

Wherever we look, overtly sexual symbols and images confront us. Whether you explore the Internet for on line discussion groups featuring a variety of sexual preferences, a DVD rental shop or a bookstore for both fiction and non-fiction devoted to it, sex is everywhere. Most of it is genitally focused. You might respond, "Isn't that what sex is all about?" To quote Gina Ogden Ph.D.: "It's not just about intercourse and orgasm. It's about receptiveness and movement...our most profound emotions...how we think and feel and love."

More than six years in the making, the Heart and Soul of Sex reveals a profound understanding of female sexuality. Because Dr. Ogden, sexual therapist and clinician since 1974 wanted to show how much more there is to be gained from sexual experience than the traditional physical responses, she devised a survey and distributed it nationwide. With 3810 replies the Heart and Soul of Sex was born. To quote from the introduction: "In some ways the language of spiritual experience comes closest to expressing the fullness of our sexual response, for it is the language of connection and ecstasy."

"My goal with this book is to expand how we think and talk about sex by offering information from thousands of women and suggesting how their experiences might broaden sexual meaning and language for all of us. Called the ISIS connection, integrating sexuality and spirituality, Dr. Ogden's survey reveals the marvelous varieties of ways that her respondents experience their sexuality, demonstrating as Dr. Ogden says "The truth is our sexual energy is always with us, whether or not we choose to act on it in a genital way." Her book delineating the responses of women from 18 to 86 and a few men, will be of help to anyone wishing to learn more about this vital aspect of themselves.

In the first section Dr. Ogden speaks as a woman, as a therapist, as a guide. She shares from both her life and her clinical experience, integrating them smoothly into an ongoing discussion of the depth of connection available in the ISIS connection. In the second section she gives the reader a broad spectrum of suggestions, exercises, and ceremonies to enhance and expand not just sexual experience but the totality of our experience as human beings. A careful, informative book the Heart and Soul of Sex will be useful to a broad spectrum of women as well as to the men who wish to better understand them.

5 out of 5 stars Sex Is More Than Sex.......2007-01-18

Gina Ogden's beautifully written book, The Heart and Soul of Sex, gives women the permission and encouragement to explore our total body-and-soul female sexuality. With her unique blend of science, sexology, spirituality, and tantric practice, Dr. Ogden offers a variety of resources to stimulate the sexual imagination and realize greater physical and emotional pleasure. For anyone wanting to more fully expand her sexual experience, with or without a partner, into the realm of the magical and transformative, I heartily recommend this informative book.

5 out of 5 stars Unconditional Love Meets Unconditional Pleasure.......2006-12-16

Gina Ogden's new book gives women unrefutable evidence that they don't have to compromise who they are - uniquely - to have a full experience of who they are as sexual AND spiritual beings. She has the statistics to back up her statements, but the book is not a scientific treatise - it's a flowing and exciting map of new territory for those who have not yet discovered the depth and breadth of their sexual/spiritual connections.
I highly recommend this book for any woman of any age, and for any man who wants to learn more about "his" woman.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Sexuality is not an oxymoron!!.......2006-12-14

Dr. Gina Ogden opens up a wonderful exploration of the body, mind, soul and sex connections based on years of research in women of all ages, including the senior set. It offers vital and fresh information delivered with a style and grace that is inspiring and an enthusiasm that's contagious. Read and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars another classic in women of color feminist theory.......2001-05-13

I have read & re-read essays in this volume over and over again. I think of this as among those texts that remind me there are those who went before me--and that the struggle for recognition is not over. Among the key texts here are Sandoval's essay on racism & feminism, a report based on a real conflict that took place in the NWSA and Alarcón's pathbreaking essay on Chicana subjectivity. But there are so many others as well...my main critique is that the anthology is not as representative as it could be with a leaning towards the "Santa Cruz circle"--and yet the truth of the matter is that there was an incredible grouping of women of color studying & writing there in the mid to late 1980s!

Book Description

A sweeping cultural history of American Modernism in the 1920s, viewed through the prismatic lens of jazz

In this book Robert Crunden puts the "jazz" back in Jazz Age. Jazz was America's greatest contribution to the Modernist movement, yet it is much overlooked. When we hear the term "Jazz Age," we conjure the ghosts of Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Eliot, not of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Ethel Waters, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. To correct this imbalance, Crunden re-introduces us to these musical luminaries who gave the era its name, while tracing the early history of jazz from New Orleans to Chicago to New York.

While Crunden emphasizes music over literature and the visual arts, he never fails to trace the complex cross-currents of literature that passed between jazz musicians and their "Lost Generation" peers, a veritable pageant of the glittering personalities of the day-James Joyce, Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe, Paul Strand, John Dos Passos, Langston Hughes, Gertrude Stein.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good reading!.......2000-03-27

When you think about American History the one era that seems to have the most romantic and most appeal is the "roaring 20's". When we think about the 20's we think of things like Prohibition and bootleg liquor. Rise of the American Gangster was a big part of the culture.

What if that was only a small part, what if people like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington were the essence of the American cultural transition in what has become known as the age of jazz. According to Crunden these men and others made a more significant impact on society than they are given credit for.

Throughout the book Crunden shows that modern jazz got it start from the black musicians of the day. Even more impressive is the compelling argument that Crunden puts forth. Crunden also gives you a glimpse into the different angle on the race relations of the day.

From beginning to end the book covers what has to be considered one of the most important historical periods of our time. Crunden shows the how the rise of the musician throughout the decade, the cultural changes, the social class differences and the artists themselves make the 20's an exciting time to be alive.

Book Description

A leading spiritual writer recovers "The Desert Way of Believing" -- the spiritual pathway discovered by early Christian monks who lived in the Egyptian desert that is still relevant to Christians today. Alan Jones distills the elements that made this fully orthodox way of inner transformation a unique and important part of the early church. Refreshingly readable and filled with rich insights, Soul Making draws together the spirituality of modern literature and elements of psychology. Jones shows how the desert way can become for any spiritual seeker a soul-stretching means of experiencing the "wonder, mystery, and awe" at the heart of the Christian faith.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soul Making - an excellent book.......2006-11-10

Very good book on desert spirituality. I would recommend it to anyone seaching for a way to become closer to God. It is written for the lay reader.

1 out of 5 stars Spirituality or just bad Chinese food?.......2002-07-19

As in all of his works, Jones attempts sagacity and manages just "gas".

1 out of 5 stars Clear your mind then come........2001-11-29

I live in the desert and have for years. It is not a place of "emptiness and death", it is not a good place for crying and there is nothing particularly Christain about it. If you come to the desert with preconceived notions, if you attempt to overlay the desert with your with your existing mental framework, if you know how the world works before you get here you're going to miss everything. The desert is an exciting and dynamic place but it's not an Eastern Forest, your perception must change. If you could see the desert after rain, if you could feel the promise of night at sunset in the summer you would be thrilled not saddened. If you could watch the Cactus Wrens play you would know. The desert night is a wonderful place, even in the summer, when you step into a dry desert wash you can feel the coolness. Step into the arroyo.

5 out of 5 stars Profound insights for those who seek them.......2000-06-03

My minister spoke with me last September of the "gift of tears" mentioned in one of the chapters of this book. These tears "soften the heart and open the soul". At the time I was beginning treatment for clinical depression and was spending quite a bit of time excercising this "gift" and was sure that these tears were signs of my lack of faith in God. He helped me to see that the ability to cry for the world is fundamental to the Christian soul. Nine months later, I discovered this book from which that term derived.

Jones has written a challenging and spiritually inspiring guide to our progress through such questions as "Who is God? Who am I? What is the meaning of my life?" The resonance of his prose, the depth of his understanding, the richness of his literary references is phenomenol. If you are on a journey, seeking to discover the "soul" within you, you will find this book quite enlightening.

I cannot reccommend this book highly enough! It is not easy reading, but the answers to life and faith are not easy ones. This is a book to be savored, pondered, and returned to again and again as we continue in the life long process of "soul making".

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in Christian Spirituality.......1999-07-04

Very few books in 20th century Christian sprituality can match the depth and literate force of this classic. It is a remarkable book that stands with the work of Father Nouwen and even Father Louie. If you read it you will recommend it.
