Customer Reviews:
On time and in perfect condition. .......2007-01-08
I received the book when expected and in perfect conditions. Very interesting book for a very reasonable price.
An architect's treasure.......2005-08-17
This book has outstanding breadth of information for system architecture. Some details are quite basic, while others are quite indepth. Overall though, what's most important is that the book is very well written and serves its purpose well. It has many excellent strategies, along with a comprehensive feature list of most J2EE projects.
Definately a 5 star.
Concepts applicable in J2EE as well as .NET.......2004-10-18
I develop applications using J2EE and .NET. I found that most concepts found in this book are equally applicable to the .NET arena as well. Good work.
Practical for beginners.......2004-10-14
I'm a Junior J2EE Technical Architect and I just finish reading your book. It's really interesting and instructive. It helps me a lot on my project planning.
Certainly NOT the J2EE Bible !!!.......2004-10-09
This book covers many topics, unfortunately it does not go into great detail on any of them. I don't know what the author was trying to do with this book, but I do know that this is not the new J2EE bible as some of the other reviewers have stated. Some of the topics covered have nothing to do with J2EE, they are project management topics.
If you are looking for a real J2EE book look elsewhere.

Book Description
From the exclusive publisher of Oracle Press books, here is an architectural and technical reference on how to use Oracle Application Server 10g to Web-enable Oracle databases for application server systems. You’ll find coverage of installation, configuration, and tuning, using Java with Oracle Application Server 10g, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
The Standard!.......2006-05-30
I used this book to deploy Oracle Application Server 10g infrastructure on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the handbook. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Administrative experience to use this book just a decent understanding of application design. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle Application Server 10g as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for).
Very Nice Job.......2005-08-28
I have taken the iAS 10 Admin I course from Oracle, and wish that I read this book prior to the class. I found it very valuable especially if you are deploying iAS 10g (9.0.4) on Linux. I highly recommend the book to iAS administrators/DBA's.
Summary of the White Papers.......2005-02-24
As an administrator/implementor of these systems, there are many aspects to administering the 10gAS system. Although the authors do make reference the book intends to simplify the rather large amount of documentation, it falls short of a complete guide.
It is good starting point for a default implementation--detailed installation steps, with moderate emphasis on design (ex. touching on distributed administration and delegation). Thus provides adequate groundwork.
The forefront of administration of this product is design choices. For example, the Internet Directoy piece is major component to the architecture--its design greatly impacts administration of the entire system. Perhaps this book was not intended to be a design resource (since it is designated an "Administration Handbook"), but administration in the field of application servers is highly dependent upon design decisions.
The book would be a fair addition to a reference library, but not necessary if one is willing to sift through the vendor "White Paper" documentation--as large and convoluted as it may be.
Great Book.......2004-11-29
Mr Donald k. Buleson and John Garmany have more experiene in Oracle field and Complete knowledge of Oracle Their books have many useful information and are well-written.
Informative! An easy read..........2004-04-09
I have enjoyed reading books by both of these authors. The technical layout of information allows the reader to focus in on what is being presented. The readability factor is important to me, and I appreciated being able to sit down and casually read rather than do a thorough study of what's in this book - without sacrificing technical depth. Highly recommend!

Customer Reviews:
It is enough good.......2007-05-21
It is a good guide to begin a good SAP performance.
Good book for the reference lib.......2006-11-06
It's difficult to keep up with all the changes, impact, and new tools that Netweaver technology is requiring for configuring and maintaining the environments. I think that this book has merit in that it stick with some of the aspects and tasks that have not changed as much, and gives an update to some of the older information. For the $$ it is a good book.
Great Overview Without Getting Bogged in Details.......2006-01-20
One of my long standing complaints about computer software books is that they so often eliminate the first forty pages or so that explain just what this software is and what is supposed to do. This book (at 606 pages it's a lot more than forty pages) is essentially the front end description that explains what SAP ERP is and what it si supposed to do.
The subtitle of the book is 'Essential Skills for SAP Technical Consultants.' It appears to be aimed at the individual who is trying to decide what SAP can do for them. It's much less concerned with the detail of how to do it.
I found this to be of great help, as SAP is a huge software system. It has perhaps a thousand components (does anyone really know) from various vendors that can be tied together to handle most ERP problems. If you're going to use SAP, just which of all these components are you going to pull together to solve your particular set of problems.
After you know what you're trying to do, then there are other books and manuals that will give you the details about how to do it. So if at this point you are wondering just what is the difference between SAP R/3, and mySAP.com, and SAP Web Application Server, and SAP NetWeaver, this is the place to start. All in all, it's good to see such a book. I hope this is a trend getting started and that we can see other books coming on other big software packages that's more aimed at what can be done.
What happened in the new edition?.......2006-01-18
This edition appears to be about 1/3 the size of previous editions; and refers to a fairly old version of SAP... even though this was released in Dec 2005.
There is a great many things missing here. SPAM... I guess you do not need that any more.
Perhaps the publishers wanted a book for managers.
Anyway, if you are considering this, get the 2nd edition... or buy one of the many that are used, as I expect there will be many BASIS admins selling this back the day after they purchase it.
Sorry... I was hoping for an updated version of Edition 2.
Poor Book, barely skims the surface.......2004-12-29
This book provides no real usable knowledge about SAP. There is absolutely no information on some areas, such as CATT's. And the areas that have some meat have only bologna.

Customer Reviews:
A Reference for Training Departments.......2006-04-21
This handbook is a collection of ideas from companies for designing employee training and learning systems. It covers such areas such as creating the "learning organization", outsourcing, electronic performance systems, interactive multimedia training systems, diversity training and development, training for global operations and benchmarking for best practices.
This comprehensive handbook helps trainers design classrooms, self-study and computer and web based training programs. While delivering the latest information on how adults learn best, it shows trainers how to prepare lesson plans, create visual aids, and deliver dynamic and powerful presentations.
Classic reference for Training & Development Professionals.......2002-02-09
The Handbook is arranged to cover almost all aspects of Training & Development. The topics are carefully selected and their authors picked from among the top names in their respective fields and therefore, the chapters are focused, targeted and provide the right mix of information and practical guidelines.
Each chapter addresses a single topic (like corporate universities, customer service training, leadership development, etc.) and is written in a straight-forward manner at the right depth making them easy to read and the perfect introduction to the topic without losing it's functionality as a reference.
No T&D professional should go without this book whether as a reference and a quick source of information when memory will just not oblige or an informative and valuable resource for information and ideas.
The Handbook is divided into 5 Sections:
1) The Training & development Function - Covering such topics as the learning organization, history of training and cost accounting for training.
2) Program Design & Development - The chapters on ISD; HPT; Adult Learning; & Evaluation are brilliantly written. I keep on going back to them again and again.
3) Media & methods - Includes some good case studies as well as Thiagi's excellent chapter on instructional games.
4) Training Applications - This is a brilliant discussion of almost all training topics that you might come across.
5) Resources - While these might be a little dated, they are still quite useful.
Check the table of Contents and some of the samples in the pages so obligingly provided by Amazon.com and don't be deterred by the length or the price of the book. This book is worth every cent and will last you long after you have forgotten the cost.
A must for every educators reference library........1999-05-25
The ASTD Training and Development Handbook, Fourth Edition, by Robert L. Craig, is an essential reference book for faculty, teachers, educators, and learning system administartors at all levels including University, Corporate, K-12, and Community Colleges. It is easy to use, very comprehensive, and has great quick summaries. With the fusion of the teaching, training, and tutoring into a learner centered model this book is more useful than ever. A MUST BUY. The price is worth every penny.
Excellent reference source for HRD professionals.......1999-05-09
This is a great resource for HR professionals from tiny to mega corporations. Contributing authors are the most respected experts in their fields. Primary focus is on training and development: accountability, justifying programs, format, leadership, pros, cons, pitfalls, challenges . . . all aspects are covered.
As I research and write my Adult Education thesis, this book is the most useful tool I've found.

Customer Reviews:
I'm not a programmer ..........2007-10-19
but I wanted to calculate an average cost per day. Obviously the number of days in a month depends on the month.
No problem. Pop in the CD included ... copy ... paste into your VBA Module ...
Locate your spreadsheet's cell ... type "=dhDaysInMonth(Month)" ... done.
If you've written any macros at all or even recorded one ... you will appreciate the amount of work you're buying for a little over thirty bones.
Highly recommended. As page 196 says, 'You'll get better performance (and fewer bugs) by taking advantage of the work that's already been done.'
This book is a bargain.
Mange Takk!
Excellent! Great book.......2007-07-17
This is really the best book i ever found. I have bought several books for Excel VBA. Non of them will explain as detail as this book. Besides, for those people who really interest in VBA, this is really a good book where you can start solve more complex problem.
Non of the books so far i found will teach you how to create data structure using VBA e.g binary tree, linked list, queue and stack thru VBA implementation. it is worth while to keep this book for your future reference...
Excellent reference book for Intermediate users.......2007-07-13
In the introduction the authors state : "To make it possible to stuff as much code into this book, we've had to dispense with material specifically geared for beginners"
I like that - a lot of 'reference' books I've purchased waste many chapters devoted to topics that I would expect to find in 'Inroduction' or 'Beginners' - titled books.
This tome however (all 1073 pages of it!) is totally dedicated to useful code snippets and sound programming principles.
Despite its size I find the book logically structured and very easy to locate the information I need, very quickly - the "Contents at a Glance" page helps immensly.
I'd definitely recommend this book for any VBA developer as an essential resource.
Thorough, Instructional, with great code samples.......2006-02-27
This book has gotten me out of many scrapes. It is a rare book that can be read from the beginning, while trying out the sample code, as a way to learn the language, or as a reference book, to look up how to use a certain function effectively while writing code. Don't let the title fool you, this book is for those coding in VB just as much as it is for those using VBA. If you are going to buy one book on Visual Basic, let this be the one. If you are going to buy one book on Visual Basic, and see one movie this year, then buy this book and see Amelie. ;)
Reference Book.......2003-11-30
Good reference book... help you find tricks to do automation and to maximize the output of your VBA code. Not for newbies.

Customer Reviews:
Testing plan alone worth the cost.......2004-06-09
This book is about web testing in general, not just performance testing, and is a must have for the professional testing engineer. Chapters 7 and 8, on performance and scalability give a very good introduction to the subject, and include a great sample performance testing plan.

Saved me hours of research, a good resource.......2003-07-28
I've purchased and been reading this book. I've also reviewed the downloadable sample documents "Master Test Plan" and this is almost exactly what I need for the test plan I'm writing for our extranet site. Before finding this book, I spent hours searching for methods and techniques to use for developing a through test plan. Once I found this resource, my searching was over.
Informative and readable, a great buy........2003-06-01
The Web Testing Handbook is an excellent guide to `real world' testing of web sites and web applications. The book includes techniques, tips, checklists and - what I found really useful - lists of relevant URLs giving me instant opportunities to obtain up-to-date research, statistics and further expert opinion. The book also overcomes the problems many people have with endless acronyms by containing explanations of underlying web technologies. As a tester, I found the level just right - not over my head and not (like many Internet books) around my boots.
The book's approach is pragmatic and doesn't seek to give instant answers where none exist. Neither does it push academic approaches, which are never going to work in a high-pressure industry. I found the discussions of issues and solutions to be practical and useful. There is also a case study to reinforce the points made by the author - as well as making the topics more interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone directly or indirectly involved in web testing. It shows testers what to test and how. It gives test managers a framework and an approach to managing web testing - even including information on software tools. It is informative, understandable and, above all, readable.
Goes beyond interface testing.......2002-11-07
Testing Web-based applications and web interfaces is a new focus for many companies. Web-based application testing is different from the traditional client / server, PC, and / or mainframe system software products. Also factored in are code quality, browser compatibility, site navigation, user interaction, performance, and scalability.
Recognizing that companies need to conduct evaluation as they develop their "next generation" web sites and applications, The authors have written an insightful introduction to the concepts and techniques for conducting various tests. The book starts with an introduction to web programming, servers, architecture, and all those something 2 something terms (Business to Business (B2B) and Market to Market (M2M) for example). To select and conduct appropriate tests requires an understanding the purpose of the application and the architecture that supports it.
The authors reference a study by Creative Good during the 1998 holiday season on 10 leading Web shopping sites. The study found that for every US$1 spent on advertising generated US$5 in additional review while US$1 spent on "customer experience" improvements yielded more than US$60 in additional review. What more motivation is needed to ensure your Web site is usable?
This handbook guides you through the web testing process. The book is easy to follow and avoids dry "theory" talk that you find in many technical books. How often have you read such a book and found yourself unable to apply it to real world situations? You'll find a handy checklist of test conditions along with URLs for further references associated with the section to help you apply the test concepts. You can take the relevant items from the checklists and create your test case templates. The authors took another step and created a companion Web site using an imaginary company as a case study and included downloadable sample business requirements and test plans associated with the case study.
Covering all of the possible bases, the book offers guidelines and checklists for conducting all kinds of testing that applies to web-based applications, from interface usability to server functionality. It also includes common software development scenarios and provides possible options for handling them. For example, a team may require everyone to work on the weekend to test the Web site's ability to handle a large number of users. However, it may not be the best way to go functionally and financially. The authors explain the reasoning and present available options.
While traditional software developers are probably most familiar with concepts like load testing (determining how much load a server can handle) and software testing (making sure that all of the functionality works), human factors professionals have touted the concept of usability testing as a way of determining how well a user might be able to navigate and use a web site or application. Jakob Nielsen has been one of the most vocal in this. The book provides a variety of methods for testing usability.
The book provides something for everyone in a software development shop including developers, testers, managers, and project managers. Testers get help on how and where to begin. Managers can benefit from the test strategies and planning. Companies new to testing and not knowing which tools and resources to use will want to review the book's unbiased discussion and resources of such tools. You won't feel overwhelmed by the resources because it's organized by sections, which helps you focus on current needs.
The book is well laid out and it's a fast read. It would be difficult to miss its concepts. This well-rounded book would be a boon to any software development team's library even if it were only one person playing all the parts.
Not worth the [$$] pricetag.......2002-08-20
When looking into books for any tech-related topic, I look for two qualities to assess the value of the book. The first is the depth of the subject matter of the work. I look for books that teach me new technologies, technique, or process. The second is the book's lasting value as a reference for future work. When spending money, I'd like to be sure that the lasting value of the book is at least potentially there. This book has neither of those qualities, here's why:
- Depth of Subject Matter -
It's difficult to determine who this book is written to educate. The forward identifies the audience as existing software testers looking for education in the finer points of web software testing. That's legitimate, but it falls far short of this or any other unstated goals. The delivery of material in this work is quick and dirty. There's no topic that extends beyond a single-digit number of pages. This makes plenty of sense in the early chapters where the discussion of things like hardware compatibility are discussed. Other areas deserve far better coverage. The topics of browser compatibility, performance testing, and scalability testing, for example, are scantly explained. It's a disservice to the reader, since these are paramount topics for the intended audience. Another downfall to this approach is its failure to discuss the organizational differences between an IT team deploying software frequently versus one deploying incremental releases on a yearly timeframe. To be fair, the authors touch on this topic, but it's nothing comprehensive.
- Reference Value -
The reference value of this book is almost zero. I run a test team for a web based business of considerable size, and I have to say I found some actually misleading advice in the work. A lot of the explanations of what's smart and what's avoidable fall completely off the mark. Even worse, and this is actually enough of a reason to start looking for a different book right away, is the poor quality of the references throughout the book. While they spend some considerable time explaining the difference between the time in a normal software development cycle and one that operates under 'web time', they cite sources from two and three years ago that are completely irrelevant considering the widespread and fundamental changes to the online software development domain. They establish 'web time' as an accelerated, hectic calendar where nothing is the same after two months of churning, but then cite references from 1999 market research studies to back up their points. Though definitely not intentional, it's very neglectful. I turned to the front of the book at one point to re-verify the copyright date. ...
So, for me and for my needs, this book is essentially worthless and I'm sad to have spent [$$] to learn this. The topics are covered only as summaries, but those that deserve and in some cases completely require a much deeper explanation are treated similarly. Regarding the intended audience, it's still a head scratcher because of the delivery of the material. It's not heavy in any one area, so it's difficult to determine if this is for a QA manager (can't work, not enough attention to process), the new tester (can't work, not enough detail on the actual testing), the converting tester (might work, but the high-level descriptions coupled with the indescriminate delivery of the subjects would confuse anyone without due insight), or the experienced web tester (can't work, too much of the data is elementary to those already functioning as a tester in the web space). I don't suggest it, and I wouldn't suggest it in a future edition if they work to update the references.

Book Description
There's nothing ordinary about JBoss. What began as an open source EJB container project six years ago has become a fully certified J2EE 1.4 application server with the largest market share, competitive with proprietary Java application servers in features and quality. And with its dynamic architecture, JBoss isn't just a J2EE server. You can alter the services to make J2EE work the way you want, or even throw J2EE away completely.
After more than a million downloads, many JBoss users are no longer trying it out on internal test boxes, but rolling it out on production machines. JBoss: A Developer's Notebook takes you on a complete tour of JBoss in a very unique way: rather than long discussions, you will find code--lots of code. In fact, the book is a collection of hands-on labs that take you through the critical JBoss features step-by-step. You don't just read about JBoss, you learn it through direct practical application. That includes exploring the server's many configurations: from bare features for simple applications, to the lightweight J2EE configuration, to everything JBoss has in store-including Hibernate and Tomcat.
JBoss: A Developer's Notebook also introduces the management console, the web services messaging features, enhanced monitoring capabilities, and shows you how to improve performance. At the end of each lab, you'll find a section called "What about..." that anticipates and answers likely follow-up questions, along with a section that points you to articles and other resources if you need more information.
JBoss is truly an extraordinary application server. And we have an extraordinary way for you to learn it.
Customer Reviews:
Great high level overview.......2007-09-25
"JBoss: A Developer's Notebook" is a great introduction to getting up and running on JBoss. Instead of just dumping code and mounds of text at you, it quickly walks through setting up a "ToDo" application, including connecting to a mySQL database, logging, monitoring and security. None of it is in-depth but it's enough to point you in the right direction.
Be warned that the chapter on persistence uses XDoclet whereas things are moving towards EJB3 now so that chapter is not quite as useful as the rest of the book.
Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking to set up a JBoss development server. Using it, I was able to tweak my installation of JBoss quite a bit.
Short and sweet and excellent.......2007-02-25
This book is an example for all modern book writers to follow.
Most writers seem to want to write books weighing a few pounds, try to cover every conceivable topic and eventually do not do sufficient justice to anything.
On the other hand, this book is the book when you know "what" you want to do, and then "how" to do that with JBoss.
Great starter kit - gets down to the brass tacks.......2007-01-05
JBoss: A Developer's Notebook continues with the pragmatic appproach followed by the other books in the series. A series of clear, succinct examples on getting up and running with JBoss are the primary method used to present the content of the book. Most examples build on a previous example so it is best to cover them in a linear fashion. After execution of the examples, the user should have a good understanding of how JBoss operates, what it takes to deploy an application on JBoss and how to use the built-in features such as the Web Console.
If you are trying to dive into the details of JBoss in order to solve a complex setup issue or trying to fully understand one aspect of the application, then this is probably not the book for you. The depth of the information in the book is appropriate for it's scope as a developers notebook but it is not a reference manual.
Overall, if you want to learn the basics of JBoss quickly or stand up an instance with minimal research, you have come to the right place.
Excellent book on JBoss .......2005-12-06
Excellent book on JBoss, the book is a easy read covering the ins and outs of JBoss from writing your app to, securing and managing the container. Very well presented with the cool notes on the sidebar which are worth reading all by themselves. The chapters are concise and to the point in presenting the ideas, this has become valuable resource on my desk.
Good quick paced JBoss starter.......2005-12-06
If you are just now considering using JBoss then this is definitely the book for you. It covers the installation, configuration, and deployment of a J2EE application in a very concise and useful format. It presents the unique and useful features of JBoss in a simple format. If you are looking for a reference book that covers every little detail of JBoss then keep looking.

Book reading flow is choppy; clearly written by multiple writers, unfortunately........2007-06-20
Whereas this book may have information throughout, that is not what makes good instruction. Some may argue that if you know "XYZ", "ABC", and "concept A" and "concept B", that this book is good.
But one should not have to fight to learn when the concepts are not difficult.
Briefly -- using the examples as given will still bring up errors when trying to run the examples on some people's systems [I found others with the issues I had in the Oracle forums, and was able to fix them; "luckily" for me, the examples that didn't work for me were the same as a number of others, so I didn't have to look far].
As an example of the flow in the book, in the beginning of chapter 8 [which is the beginning of Part II], it essentially summarizes where you are at; it mentions that you've gone through Chapters 1-4, and then it immediately states what is now coming in Part II [not mentioning chapters 5-7, as if the author didn't even know they were there], and then what happens in Part III. It's as if when one of the three writers wrote the beginning of Part II, they weren't aware that there would be three other chapters in Part I. [and this makes sense, because chapter 5 is very much out of place in where it is. Most people already know the Java part of it anyway].
Also, BC4J is talked about much in the first few hundred pages of the book, but really the best explanation for it is on page 224, after you've seen BC4J referenced numerous times already. And I understand this sounds picky while reading one part described, when the biggest issue is that the flow is all over the place.
One shouldn't have to figure out what the authors *meant* to be saying; the authors should say it. [and to reference this example further, the index lets you know you can find BC4J on pages 5, 6, and 109, but no mention of 224. If it did, you might see that the definition given on page 5 is different than the definition given on page 224, because the wording is different [one says BC4J is what came before ADF BC, another says it is just a different name for it].
Some people do not mind having to figure out what the writers were trying to describe, and for you folks, this may be good.
But, if you don't like having to first interpret the book, then learn what you are trying to learn, this is just something to think about.
The best book for learning and understanding Oracle10g JDeveloper.......2006-06-15
This latest edition for Oracle10g JDeveloper builds on the success of the previous 9i version. As with the previous version, each chapter is well organized with thorough and accurate examples. Well thought-out attention has been given to explaining Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF). The authors also go into great depth in explaining how to use the newly improved modeling capabilities of 10g JDeveloper (both their strengths and weaknesses).
In short, this book as been well received by myself and colleagues I work with and would highly recommend it to anyone getting started in developing Oracle based applications with JDeveloper. I have found no better resource and tutorial for understanding ADF.

it is wath i was looking for. Complete, simple and perfectly explaned; in one word perfect.
Solid coverage of Oracle backend technologies........2006-01-08
This book was exactly what I needed. I had been struggling for a couple of months to learn all of the pieces needed to build a business application using JDeveloper. I have some Java experience but not a strong J2EE background. There are plenty of resources around that cover XML, Java, JSP/Servlets and non-Oracle frameworks like Struts, Spring and JavaServer Faces (JSF). Don't expect to learn about those things here. But if you are trying to wrap your head around Oracle's Application Development Framework (ADF), this is the place for you. It's the best single source I've seen for that topic. There is a lot of information on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), but it's scattered and isn't wrapped in a sequential story the way this book's presentation is. Most of ADF Business Component structure has been stable for a couple of years, so the fact that this book is a bit dated doesn't get in the way.
What's missing because of the publication date is coverage of JDeveloper's extensive integration of JSF within ADF. Oracle has set their stake in the ground with JSF as the web client technology, and their ADF Business Components as the backend. It's an elegant combination. This book will give you excellent insight into the backend technologies. The wait is on for similar coverage of the frontend.
It is not a Handbook. It is a Good Guide.......2005-02-05
The authors told us in the introduction part of this book that it is for "both Oracle developers who want to make the transition to the J2EE environment and also Java developers who want to leverage the productivity tools and frameworks available in JDeveloper". The authors have done an good job to satisfy this scope, though I feel time by time that this is book is actually written for Oracle developers who have already exposed to Java/J2EE technology and also J2EE developers who possess basic knowledge about Oracle database technology. Otherwise, I do not recommend you to start your journey from this book. It could be too difficult. Further more, if you want to learn how to use JDeveloper 10g as your Java development tool, this book is not designed for you.
This book gives a good overview of the introductory information about JDeveloper 10g and many related J2EE technologies developed by Oracle. Such overview coverage is further enhanced by about 25 well-designed step-by-step hands-on practices, which are very helpful.
It is true that you may find a lot of learning material from Oracle Technology Network. However, I feel this book offers the unique value by covering this quite extensive and diversified subject in an organized way. By reading this book, you will certainly improve your productivity since JDeveloper 10g is a great tool and since otherwise you may feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of information you may find online.
This book is based on Oracle JDeveloper 10g production release of version 9.0.5.1. The current Oracle JDeveloper 10g production release is of version 10.1.2. I found some of the step-by-step instructions may need slight modification due to the difference of the two versions, though I do not think it posses much difficult to any experienced readers.
Chapter 5, Java Language Concepts for JDeveloper Work, gives a very brief overview of Java concepts. Well, if you need to read this chapter, you are not ready to read this book yet. The good news is that this chapter is only about 30 pages long, less than 5% of this thick book. The development of the rest of the story is in a quite logic and readable order.
The authors explain to us that "this book is a `handbook' not in the sense of a complete guide to all areas of the tool, but, .., a guide for creating J2EE applications using JDeveloper". It is interesting why they still insist to call it a handbook. This book covers only many of the basic features of JDeveloper. If you are advanced, and if you need quickly find a good coverage on an important but advanced features, most likely this is not the book that will give you an answer. Many of the books by Oracle Press are already written in somewhat quite a technical manner. Calling it a handbook may actually scare away those who are new to 10g. You do not start studying a subject by reading a handbook, do you?

Handbook of Attachment.......2006-04-05
When I ordered this book I thought there was a later version available. Online there are two versions available - this one (1999) and a later one - 2002 or 2003 or even later - I can't remember. It was confusing if the later one was available or if there is even a later one. When I submitted this question to Amazon they basically said that there was no way of determining which book would be sent to me. So it was disappointing when I received the earlier version. I wasn't about to take the time to send it back because I needed to start using it.
A great product but.......................2006-03-15
This is a great book. However, it is too clinical and hard to read. Very dry reading. I was looking for some practical tips to use at work. The heading "Handbook" is misleading. To me a handbook is a reference tool that I can go to and get information I can use quickly, practically and the client can understand. I think I wasted my money in this sense. But, it was my choice. Thanks.

This mammoth guide to building enterprise-wide applications using the Microsoft Office Suite database is aimed squarely at the hardcore programmer, illustrating all aspects of program development in the nearly mind-numbing detail such an audience requires. Access 2000 Developer's Handbook offers thorough help with traditional Access application building--such as creating SQL Server databases--and also with Access 2000's new Internet features. With Web-based applications becoming more prevalent, the chapters on using Access as a Web client and publishing Access data on the Web are particularly useful.
The authors have organized the guide so that, depending on your level of expertise or familiarity with previous versions of Access, you can delve into the book at any point and get started with your programming chores. Along these lines, a companion CD-ROM includes all the code and tables featured in the book, in addition to software demos, freeware, and shareware.
Access 2000 Developer's Handbook isn't for the faint of heart; reading this book won't make you a programmer overnight. But if your job is developing applications for large corporate networks--especially if you're creating Web-based programs--this guide provides everything you need. --John Frederick Moore
Topics covered: Designing client/server applications, creating SQL Server databases, using Access as a Web client, using source code control, setup and deployment.

A must have for MsAccess programmers.......2001-09-30
Daily employed subjects, very good explaineds and an useful INDEX to found what you need. That is aplicable to the whole serie "Access xxx Developer's Handbook". I own all of them!. The best books about MsAccess.
DAO/ADO Why didn't they use some different letters?.......2000-04-17
Microsoft had the guts to simply stop DAO code in place (3.6 is it) and it was such an ugly mess to use to write client server applications that its just as well. Now there's ADO, which is like RDO (which you could only get by buying Visual Basic, Professional Edition, but now RDO is no longer being developed or improved), and ADO is also like PowerBuilder in its syntax and function, primarily in using a universal and extremely flexible connection object to link to the data source.
The authors of this book (and the companion Volume One) attempt to help the average developer make the transition from DAO to the new ADO syntax and as such the books are a bit longer than they would be if they were only explaining the new ADO syntax and the example ADO code in the book.
There needs to be a more sophisticated ten volume work (by the same authors, as their writing style and the usefulness of their examples simply has no equal in the ACCESS realm) that covers the entire Client Server design process.
Now that you can get MSDE (which is SQL 7.0 for all intents and purposes) for free with Acess2000, there is no reason that any multi-user application should use the Jet for storing the data files. The drawback of having to learn how to use MSDE/SQL7.0 as a data server is really not that bad, the main hassle is that you don't get the nice window display of the MSDE objects (tables, users, functions, etc) that comes with SQL7.0 and also there is no interactive SQL 'window' in Access that would allow you to write and run SQL7.0 SQL strings to build your data objects, etc. But surely someone will create a shareware program that provides most of this information, and it would be one of the few shareware programs I'd actually purchase.
In a word, don't expect this book to provide all the exact code you'd need for a professional application. These authors did not attempt to create a cookbook to be used for direct use, rather it is a comprehensive first step to learning the new ADO system of connecting ACCESS to a server backend (with many examples of similar DAO code, many times both sets of code are used in the same function, with comments to allow one or the other to be 'turned on/off'). I sure wish I'd had this two years ago when I began writing a client/server program, as it would have saved a tremendous amount of time and helped me make a solid, quick, and coherent application in a very short time.
One last note, the little 'self attaching' subform that implements record navigation is worth the price of the entire book (its in Volume One, but you can't, logically, buy this book without also buying Volume One, they refer to each other a great deal and together they are quite comprehensive) and its just one of the little goodies on the CD-ROM. By so meticulously explaining how this subform 'links' itself to the events (called 'sinking the events') of the 'parent' form its placed in, the authors give you enough information to try this same technique in other ways.
This is the strength of this two volume set, how it educates rather than attempting to be a cookbook of professional code for enterprise applications. There are no other ACCESS2000 books by other publishers that even come close to the level of utility and clarity of these authors. One wishes they'd now write the SQL7.0 'backend' Handbook as well.
The Best Enterprise Book Ever!.......2000-02-25
Anyone who's ever purchased one of the Access Developer Handbooks will find this incredible Enterprise Edition is a must have! The code samples on the CD alone are worth the cost of the book. The writing is clear and thorough and the samples are excellent and (so far) bug free.
Data Access Pages, ADPs, MSDE, ADO, Multi-User Issues, Security, it's all here. Thanks to Litwin, Getz, & Gilbert for yet another great book!
Another Great Version of a Great Book!.......2000-01-15
Tons of info, lots of sample dbs and code. Exactly what I've come to expect from these guys. Thanks for another great book!
Outstanding! Necessary for EVERY Access Developer!.......2000-01-09
This has to be the most outstanding book written on Access 2000 in the Enterprise! The code samples are almost always complete and bug free. The examples are clear, simple, and well documented. The CD itself is a gold mine; even if you don't want to read the massive volume (the sign of a true geek - I began reading this book on Christmas Eve at 9:00 AM, and finished about the time my son was waking up for his gifts!) the CD itself is worth the price. They cover DAO as well as ADO in the Enterprise, and cover just enough SQL to get you up and running on a "real" SQL Server. (Note to naysayers: if you want a book on SQL 7.0, BUY a book on SQL 7.0! There is no way to cover all the possible back ends!) Compared to the other books I've found on Access 2000, this book simply blows them away. The coverage of Data Access Pages was very thorough, and helped me to integrate them into a project I was just finishing to the great pleasure of the customer!
Complete coverage of the benefits and drawbacks of multi user Jet applications versus multi user MSDE or SQL databases is included; customization of the Windows installer so you can "finally!" get that professional look; create SQL Server databases, stored procedures, and triggers, securing an Access database (but not a project! ADP security is handled server side. Again - look to a book on your back end server.); and finally a concise explanation of the source code controls in the product.
Complaints: Release timing. :> I needed this book in August, not December! Also, more complex trigger samples would have been nice, but again, that is a SQL 7.0 specific item.
I would have paid twice what I did for this book, and still been this happy with it. Thank you Getz, Litwin, and Gilbert!
