4 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2007-09-18

I seldom find a book, much less an author, that I can't put down. Carl's plots and wacky characters make for great, fun, light reading that barrels along it's crooked path. I've become a real fan and highly recommend if you have a demented sense of humor and justice.

4 out of 5 stars Good but Not Really Funny.......2007-06-26

With everyone else raving about how funny this book was I bought it. I was not disappointed with the story, but it really wasn't all that humorous. Dave Barry has a much better feel for humor, especially in Florida. Still, I will read other Hiassen books. I will simply change my expectations to drama rather than humor. That's why I gave it a 4 instead of a 5; false advertising.

4 out of 5 stars Bestseller 1995 and entertaining........2007-05-05

As a hurricane hurtles through Florida, a handful of unusual people react in peculiar ways. Honeymooning Max Lamb eagerly videotapes the wreckage but is soon kidnapped by a reclusive ex-governor called Skink. Meanwhile two hustlers try to stage an insurance scam, and Max's new wife hunts for him with the help of a millionaire who juggles skulls. Book contains strong language, some violence, and some explicit descriptions of an adult nature. Even with all that, this is a humors tale with a strange sense of justice.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Hiaasen.......2007-03-12

This is as classic as a novel by Carl Hiaasen can get. The plot is evolved during and after south Florida gets hit by a hurricane with all the characters, the twists and humor that you would expect from Hiaasen.
If you have not read one of his novels yet, I should note that Hiassen is an enviromentalist (who is a regular columnists for the Miami Herald) and and all his novels take place in Florida. Full of different (and sometimes extreme characters) and a unique humor/satire he is enjoyble to read. His novels are not exactly crime stories but rather about life in Florida that has a bit of everything.
Enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Hiaasen: The comic morality tale........2006-12-05

I'm an environmentalist on the basis that I like clean air, water, etc., as opposed to being a watermelon environmentalist: green on the outside, communist red on the inside.

I like Carl Hiaasen's books because the environmental message isn't preachy. Instead, he simply writes hysterically funny stories about the assorted unfortunate (and self-inflicted) fates of people who show up make a quick buck on Florida, at the cost of Florida.

This book is a hilarious romp through post-Andrew South Florida. The bottom line is that hurricane's are nature's way of saying "Don't build here!" and people who move to South Florida to buy shoddily-constructed, never-inspected houses are simply getting what they deserve.

Of course, not everyone is a dupe or a huckster. There are some actual decent people in his books, and their sterling qualities are the perfect foil for the dupes and hucksters that constitute the rest of local humanity.

Hiaasen's genius is in his caricatures and how he plays them off against each other.

Great book.

4 out of 5 stars Growing Through Psychological Upheavals To a New Wholeness.......2002-09-13

The authors of STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SELF bring a unique set of life experiences to this book. Christina Grof has been through her own tumultuous psychospiritual awakening, while her husband Stanislav Grof, M.D. brings the insights he gained from his seventeen years as a pioneering LSD psychotherapist.

During the birth of her first child, at one point Christina felt something "snap" inside of her, and powerful electrical-like energies began rushing through her body, while brilliant white fireworks exploded in her head. These and similar symptoms of kundalini-energy arousal plagued her life from that day onward, and eventually she turned to alcohol for relief, resulting after several years in alcohol addiction. When she "hit bottom" with her alcoholism, the sense of total physical, emotional, and spiritual bankruptcy was the internal dying experience or "ego death" (the turning point in many psychospiritual crises) that she needed; from that day on, her kundalini symptoms disappeared and never returned.

As the Grofs began telling others about Christina's stormy spiritual awakening, they discovered that other people had been through similarly difficult periods of psychological instability and growth. However, others' troublesome symptoms had been triggered by a variety of events other than kundalini arousal, ranging from a near-death experience or a mystical experience, to unsought development of psychic powers or spirit guides or channeling or shamanic-initiation illness, to encounters with UFO-related otherwordly visitors, to psychiatrist John Perry's psychosis-like "return to the center" (which the book left me with only a vague understanding of; I wish the authors had explained this condition more clearly and completely). The Grofs also concluded that some addictions (like Christina's alcoholism) can be a sign of a "spiritual emergency" in progress. ("Spiritual emergency" is the authors' term for any period of emotional turbulence and/or mental confusion which is caused by a traumatic experience in a person's life; such conditions always have the potential for healing and growth leading to a higher sanity, deeper stability, and greater wholeness than ever before.)

The Grofs offer practical guidelines for anyone going through a stormy psychospiritual awakening, such as listening to music while expressing your feelings in dancing or other movement, while at the same time singing or chanting or otherwise vocalizing. They also suggest how family and friends can help, such as by remaining nonjudgemental, keeping your sense of humor, offering supportive physical contact like hugs, and trusting the process to eventually resolve itself provided it is simply supported and encouraged.

One way to encourage and support the growth process is simply by breathing more quickly and deeply than usual. During Christina's crisis, the Grofs had discovered that hyperventilation causes symptoms to temporarily intensify, eventually (after an hour or so of fast, deep breathing) to reach a climax, and then to subside for several days or weeks. Repeated hyperventilaton sessions--especially when done in a group with other hyperventilators, which greatly potentiates the process--results in permanent cessation of troublesome symptoms.

Two chapters of this book stand out for me. One is devoted to outlining Stanislav's new map of the psyche, which is based on his experience as an LSD therapist. Nearest the psyche's surface are repressed memories from childhood; deeper within lies the experiential (psychosomatic and emotional) memory of one's birth, as well as one's unconscious fear of death; deepest of all one encounters the spiritual or "transpersonal" dimension of the self, which can mediate contact with the divine during healing transcendent mystical or "peak" experiences. This new view of the subconscious helped me to understand how distressing psychological symptoms are formed, and how they can be cured

Another chapter explores the history of psychological crises, such as aboriginal rites of passage, the ancient Greek "mystery" religions, and the hero's journey in mythology; there is also a section on the teachings of Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism about spiritual growth and enlightenment.

Another noteworthy feature of this book is the clear guidelines the authors provide for distinguishing a psychological growth crisis from psychosis. Since spiritual awakenings are often mis-diagnosed as psychosis, this section should prove quite useful.

STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SELF has reassured me on my own psychotherapeutic journey that I can indeed trust the intrinsic wisdom of the psyche, and the natural unfolding of my path of growth, to lead eventually to wholeness, as I simply support it with hyperventilation and other therapeutic techniques.

Other books I like are Stanislav Grof's BEYOND THE BRAIN, and also his THE ADVENTURE OF SELF-DISCOVERY. I also enjoyed SOUL RETRIEVAL by Sandra Ingerman, Whitley Strieber's COMMUNION, John Mack's PASSPORT TO THE COSMOS, and Betty Eadies's inspiring near-death account EMBRACED BY THE LIGHT, as well as THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GOPI KRISHNA.

4 out of 5 stars SPONTANEOUS PSYCHOSPIRITUAL AWAKENING CRISES.......2002-06-29

STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SOUL brings together Christina Grof's tumultuous kundalini/alcoholism crisis with her husband Stanislav Grof's seventeen years' experience as an LSD psychotherapist.

When the couple began sharing with others about Christina's stormy psychospiritual awakening (which began with the birth of her first child as powerful electrical-like energy coursed through her body and brilliant white fireworks exploded in her head), they discovered that many other people had been through similarly difficult, dramatic experiences. Yet instead of kundalini awakening, others had been confronted with a variety of diverse events, from near-death or mystical experiences, to UFO/extraterrestrial encounters, to shamanic opening, to development of psychic powers or channeling or spirit guides; the Grofs also concluded that some cases of alcoholism or other addiction are due to a potentially positive spiritual awakening that is trying to happen; and they describe several additional types of "spiritual emergencies," as they term these sorts of crises.

Although often mis-diagnosed as psychosis, a psychospiritual awakening crisis can be worked through, using techniques such as hyperventilation, resulting in growth and a positive resolution, just as Christina's alcoholism-kundalini crisis resolved when she hit bottom with her alcoholism, helped along by her husband's knowledge from LSD psychotherapy.

For indeed, Stanislav had noticed that his wife's symptoms were similar to what people go through in LSD therapy (in large part reliving birth, and confronting death). He dovotes a chapter to describing the levels of the psyche that he discovered as an LSD therapist (the surface layer of childhood traumatic memories, and deeper in the unconscious the experiential memory of birth, while deepest of all lies the transpersonal or spiritual aspect of the self). With his understanding, and the couple's discovery that hyperventilation can resolve troubling symptoms in a way quite similar to how LSD therapy resolves problems (by reliving birth and facing one's mortality over several dozen intense, dramatic therapy sessions), Christina had reached a new stability, and freedom from her kundalini symptoms which ended her hunger for alcohol to blunt the symptoms.

The authors offer guidelines for distinguishing a psychospiritual awakening from psychosis, which should be helpful for anyone falsely diagnosed as psychotic, or anyone wondering if they are going crazy (which is a not uncommon feeling in a spiritual emergency).

They also offer suggestions for working through one's symptoms and so cooperating with one's growth process, such as singing and dancing and yelling to music; also included are tips for friends and family who want to help, such as trusting the process to eventually resolve itself with encouragement and support.

I have been going through my own psychospiritual journey of awakening for about fifteen years, and I found STORMY SEARCH FOR THE SELF to be quite reassuring and helpful in trusting my own growth process...I recognized some of my own symptoms in the pages of this self-help masterpiece.

I have found STORMY SEARCH... more useful since I have also read other books such as Stanislav Grof's comprehensive distillation of all he learned from his almost two decades as an LSD psychotherapist, BEYOND THE BRAIN: BIRTH, DEATH, AND TRANSCENDENCE IN PSYCHOTHERAPY; THE ADVENTURE OF SELF-DISCOVERY, about the Grof's hyperventilation therapy technique (which I've found useful in resolving several severe panic attacks about a year ago in my own life); Sandra Ingerman's SOUL RETRIEVAL: MENDING THE FRAGMENTED SELF, a modern shamanic view of welcoming home one's lost inner child self which may have split off in childhood due to trauma; THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF GOPI KRISHNA, about his kundalini awakening; Whitley Strieber's and John Mack's books about otherworldly visitors (such as COMMUNION and PASSPORT TO THE COSMOS); LSD PSYCHOTHERAPY, Grof's guidbook for psychedelic therapists; and Betty Eadie's near-death bestseller EMBRACED BY THE LIGHT.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful, if you seek validation.......2002-01-30

The title says it all. The path one treads on the search for the Self is at times fraught with unpleasant experiences. Memories, traumas and negativity which the human entity identifies with, resurface during this quest, and must be dealt with if one is to 'grow'. The book sets this much out well, but fails to go beyond. Or rather, it would seem that one would need the help of a Grof-trained person for dealing with the storm.

5 out of 5 stars Potentially Life Saving.......2001-03-18

An excellent book for anyone who's ever wondered if they are having a psychic experience or a psychotic experience. Details the Grof's personal experiences and lists other types of spiritual emergencies. Also gives excellent advice about how to cope with a spiritual crisis. Everyone involved in spiritual pursuits should read this book because the potential negative side effects of meditation, prayer, etc. are rarely mentioned elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars a recommended resource.......2000-05-17

While I have reservations about the work done by the Grofs, I heartily recommend this book to anyone suffering from a crisis of spirit, particularly when accompanied by the symptoms of what used to be called shamanic illness (believe me, you'll know it if you have it). I don't know how many people who've negotiated this crisis who have told me they wished they had a resource to normalize their extrahuman experiences, experiences they believed (and were told by doctors and shrinks) represented the onset of insanity rather than a unique gift highly prized in more spiritually aware cultures of the past. This book is such a resource.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars By far the best book out there--Genuinely Helpful!.......2005-02-15

Of all the books I've ever read on the subject, this book is like a key. It lays bare all of the reasons we use anger to the point of almost being embarrassing. I have always thought of my anger being justified for reason or another and I can never think about anger the same way after reading this book. I think this book can save many many relationships for those who take the time to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - practical steps to solving this problem!.......2003-03-04

I've read a number of books on anger management over the last ten years to try and help with being irritable and too quick to anger. Most were not practical enough and, even the ones that did offer exercises, didn't seem to help in any lasting way.

This book is different though. It approaches anger from some directions that are completely new to me. Because I now understand so much more about the reasons I've been using anger I'm actually finding I can control it! Because the whole book is practical exercises (as opposed to the usual "journal after the event" type thing I'm used to seeing) it really helps develop your understanding and skills while working through it.

"The Anger Habit" is also interesting because it offers more background and examples, however this Workbook stands up perfectly well on it's own, another reason to give it a resounding five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Anger Help That's Right to the Point.......2002-11-24

The Anger Habit Workbook is a useful companion book to The Anger Habit. It contains right-to-the-point instructions and exercises for cooling down anger, owning anger as your own problem, reducing righteousness and how to identify and reduce control problems. Especially helpful are the "lessons" on criticism, judgmental thinking, and self-importance. Unfortunately, the gem of the book, the treatment of hurry as anger, is hidden in the twelfth chapter instead of up front where it belongs. In using this books with clients I recommend this chapter third rather than twelfth where it is in the book. All of the chapters are pretty independent from one another so that individuals or classes can pick and choose those topics they want to work with. This book, along with The Anger Habit, is going to be around for a long time.

    1 out of 5 stars Not a good reading.......2006-08-14

Well, quite dissapointed with this book, I've to force myself to actually finished the whole book. It should be written in more simpler manner. It is difficult to understand if you are not a psychology major.
The example given aren't really helpful either. Certainly not a recommended reading.

    4 out of 5 stars A Calm Presentation of a Testy Subject.......2006-02-06

This short book offers a solution to a difficult and dangerous problem: habitual, uncontrollable anger. Such anger, explain authors Carl Semmelroth and Donald E. P. Smith, is a bad habit, and other habits may trigger it. Just as smokers get the urge for a cigarette at certain times, such as after a meal, while having a drink or while socializing, angry people assert their anger according to repetitive patterns. They may explode, for example, in response to inconsiderate drivers, disobedient children or perceived slights from employers. They stoke their tantrums with feelings of frustration and negative interpretations of the conduct of others. They fantasize frequently about how they will get control over those they see as their antagonists. Semmelroth and Smith do not tell anger addicts to temper their outbursts. Instead, they believe angry people must break the habit altogether, by replacing rage with reason and trying to understand the deeper side of their own feelings. Although this idea has merit, the authors offer their prescription with, perhaps, less than fair warning of just how difficult it is to change habits as deeply rooted as those that nourish anger. With this caution, we suggest that people whose rages have become uncontrollable - or those who have to work or live with them - may benefit greatly from the ideas in this book.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best of its kind.......2006-01-24

I really have gotten a tremenendous amount out of this book. The concepts relate directly to actual human experiences in a very direct way. It is dense, so I do recommend reading it twice to improve your chances of absorbing it. I'd even be so bold as to say that if you actually absorb the contents of the book you can't help but experience a transformation. I have read a lot of self-help stuff and this may be #1 in terms of its impact on me personally and professionally. Try reading it and take your time.

1 out of 5 stars An Unfortunate View of Anger.......2006-01-23

Dr. Semmelroth and I have very divergent views of anger. He begins his book by stating that anger is a form of insanity. Once he takes this shaming and distorted view, he has some mildly positive suggestions on how to attend to the most aggressive forms of anger behaviorally. I define anger as "the natural healing energy the body generates to respond to injury." This is a compassionate view of anger, which I believe is a normal human emotion. If you are looking to understand and heal your anger instead of trying to get rid of it, don't look here.

    5 out of 5 stars Still reading.......2005-07-25

So far the language is very simple and easy to follow. Haven't been able to get too far into it due to time constraints, so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to apply it, but so far so good.

Mike Figgis is known for his iconoclastic portrayals of outsiders. Stormy Monday (1988) depicts a janitor turned jazz club partner while in Liebestraum (1991) two affairs shed light on a 30-year old murder-suicide. But it was with Leaving Las Vegas (1995) that Figgis became a household name. The heartbreaking story of the friendship between a prostitute and a man drinking himself to death, the film garnered numerous accolades and awards including Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Director, and has since become a contemporary classic.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful historical fiction for young people......!!!!.......2003-05-29

My seven year old daughter and I finished this book last night. She was very sad to have it end. What a wonderful account of the devastating storm that hit the islands of Assateague and Chincoteague and the relief efforts to rebuild the islands and the devastated wild pony population.

It was very heartwarming to read in the epilogue excerpts from actual letters of children that sent in their hard earned money to buy back the ponies sold at previous Pony Penning Days to replenish the wild herds of Assateugue. These children and others like them preserved a tradition that had been maintained for over 100 years and because of them continues on today. In fact, Marguerite Henry dedicated this book to those very children that made it all possible.

Marguerite Henry does an excellent job of using local dialect in the telling of the story, especially with Grandpa and Grandma. You can not help but become involved in the characters and their concerns become very real to you.

I read this book many many years ago and had forgotten a great deal of the story. One of the things I did remember was Misty being put in Grandma's kitchen to wait out the storm.

If you are like me and read this book many years ago I encourage to reread it. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Foal of Waves.......2002-12-06

This is the true story of Misty, a famous horse who gave birth to a foal named Stormy during a raging, devastating storm. The book then presents an accurately detailed account of rebuilding the island of Chincoteauge after the storm.
The plot of this is exciting and suspenseful book twists just to the reader's liking, and has times of slow sadness. The odd regional colloquial speech of the characters may sometimes confuses the reader, but it is so well written you it presents a mental picture better than a movie.
This is a very interesting book to me. Its many scenes convey many different emotions: some humor, some happiness, and some intense sorrow. I am also extremely inspired by Paul Beebe, who shows courage and self-control as I would like to. It is a favorite of mine, and a worthy addition to any bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars very good book.......2002-06-15

this was a very good book and i enjoyed it a lot. everyone should read it because it has a very good story line. i would reccomend this book to people who love to read.

      5 out of 5 stars Misty's Survival.......2001-11-01

No pony would want to be pregnant in the middle of the big hurricane that killed almost everything in Chincoteague and Assateague. Paul and Maureen love the fact that Misty is going to have a baby until the storm hits. When Paul and Maureen leave Misty, everyone is extremely worried. Misty needs to find a way to survive along with her unborn baby! This is a wonderful story that will have you hanging on to every page. I recommend this book to anybody who has read Misty of Chincoteague or anyone who likes horse stories.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book!.......2000-06-03

Marguerite Henry really did it again! She wrote another great book. The only bad thing about this book is they save the best parts for last! If you get bored while reading, keep on reading for it is worth it. You will love this book...Read it!

It’s the writer’s life for Snoopy!

The world’s most talented beagle has found a new career—as a writer, of course! The Literary Ace works feverishly on his typewriter, day and night, atop his doghouse. And while Snoopy is busy writing the next great American novel, you can be sure that the rest of the Peanuts gang will try to get in on the action—especially that “round-headed kid,” Charlie Brown. ’Cause it just wouldn’t be a story without some great characters—the ones right under our favorite doggy virtuoso’s nose!

This was recommended to me by a writer friend. It didn't disappoint me. Now have it on corner of my desk for those trying times when smile or laugh is needed.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Life Snoopy Story.......2006-06-23

From the age of early TV broadcasts of peanuts, I had an inner joy of Snoopy, and my dream came true playing Snoopy in "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown", But when Charles Schultz pasted away on my birthday, I had a sad memory to follow me always, BUT the good news is ANYTHING to do with the publishing of Peanuts is worth the price. This book holds it's own in the writing of Schultz, the beagle can do no wrong in my eyes..

5 out of 5 stars Title is NOT Misleading!.......2005-09-21

My wife teaches grad students how to write & research publishable articles and BOOKS. To liven her handouts we have been collecting the "Dark & Stormy Night" cartoons from the daily Classic Charlie Brown in our local paper, The News & Observor.
Then I found this title on Amazon and ordered it for its Cover since the daily strips are in B&W; despite another reviewer's comment that it only had a couple of Snoopy writes a book strips. That Reviewer was WRONG!
This book has two 3-layer Sunday strips plus 10 single layer daily strips; in other words a bargain to assemble a fair use collage for the 20+ I had already "fair used" from the current N&O for a "Snoopy et al write books" compendium.
In other words, Duggan's Law of Scholarly Research applies to the previous reviewer.
Definitely a Five-Star Item for the 1994-95 Charles M. Schultz affectionado.

4 out of 5 stars Fooled by the Title!.......2004-03-18

Ok, for some reason, possibly by the title, cover, and back description, I got the idea this book was going to be all about Snoopy's attempts at the great American novel. Though there are a couple such strips, it is the entire 1995 year. But that ultimately didn't matter.

Full of the usual humor only Schulz could think of, there's the strips that make you laugh lighty, some that make you howl (Conrad, get his beak pierced?), but always make you smile. Good compilation, as usual, and worth the purchase if you're a fan of the strip.

Can't wait for the first book in the new series to come out though!

4 out of 5 stars Finally, the 1995 Year of Peanuts is Chronicled!.......2004-03-05

Since the Peanuts series ended in 2000, Ballantine Books have been issuing compilations of the last years of Peanuts in reverse order (1999-2000 first, then 1998, 1997 and 1996). But for about two years I have waited for a book with the 1995 strips, which would complete their series (earlier years were compiled by other publishers). But in this book, all of the strips from 1995 are published. The strips aren't the best in Peanuts history (I think Schulz did his best work in the 1970's), but they still are interesting to review. This was a period when Schulz did away with his typical four panel weekday strip and mixed things up (with many of his strips being just one large panel).

Since the new Fantagraphics series, which will publish all of the Peanuts strips in order over a 12+ year period won't get to the 1995 season for about 10 years, this book is a must for the Peanuts collector.

5 out of 5 stars Another dark torment heroes!!.......2002-09-27

This is another wonderful tale from Stuart who gives you big book quality even in series romance. He is naturally dark and brooding, the O'Neil, living with his housekeeper and son on the edge of the Maine coast, hiding from deep dark secrets and torments that he could not save him family from drowning. Cursed to live alone.
She runs off the road in the middle of a hurricane to avoid hitting a ghostly little girl and it plunges her car into the deep waters of the sound. Just as she thought she was dying she is saved by O'neil.

Taking the old worst opening line to start a book and making it a title, Stuart gives you one great supernatural tale and another of her dark tormented heroes.

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......1998-01-13

I could not put this book down. All I can say is if you loved Jane Yolens book "Greyling" as a child, you will love the shape-shifting hero O'Neal, and his ghostly family. This book is as good as it gets.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another exciting story of a boy and his dog.......2006-05-12

Jim Kjelgarrd writes exciting outdoor adventures for young people. The heroes are always very independent and self-sufficient. Alan and his father ran a hunting lodge until his father was sent to prison for a fight with an obnoxious client. Alan holds down the fort while his father is gone. There is a feud with a clan of nasty neighbors, who have cut off the wildlife runway that brought business to the hunting camp. What Alan has to go through at the hands of his father's enemies is really upsetting. I find the books where the young hero has to fight bears less disturbing than the ones where human enemies try to ruin the heroes life. It's too much like real life! Alan, who has no hunting dog, rescues a great retriever who has been shot. It takes work to win the dog's trust, but like all of Kjelgaard's heroes, Alan proves worthy. Adding to the conflict is that the dog is an outlaw, accused of being rabid and attacking his owner. Then Alan finds himself an outlaw too! Loads of suspense and adventure, and lots of lessons about life. It's not an easy world out there, but by being a straight shooter and stoic, Alan and Stormy tough it out!

5 out of 5 stars Kim Kjelgaard does it again!.......2002-07-20

Okay, so it's not a classic like Big Red, but who says classics have to be better? This book shows Jim Kjelgaard's talent as a writer and how you can take popular subjects into a book unique and different from every book about dogs out there. As a young child, I was a bookworm, but as I'm getting older, reading books isn't such a joy anymore. I knew I had to have this book though. It striked me as a book everyone needs to read, which it is. I read it in about a week because I couldn't put it down! It's a flawless triumph that gets right down to the bottom of your heart where the emotions rise until youre crying of joy. Once again, Jim Kjelgaard creates a fabulous book everyone is sure to love!

      2 out of 5 stars Stormy.......2002-05-28

I thought this book was ok. This book is about a boy named Allan. He lives alone because his dad is in jail. When Allan is out he finds a over sized dog. He calls the dog stormy. The dog he finds is a Black Lab. He has a gun shot wone for on his side. Allan brings the dog to his house and takes the bullet wone out of the Stormy. Stormy and Allan start coming around and helping each other out. Allan helps stormy out by when Stormy was trying to get a dead duck on ice. Stormy falls in the ice called water and Allan goes on his boat and saves Stormy. Stormy also helps out Allan when he was hunting. He helped him get food. When Allan finds out that stormy is a out law dog, he hides Stormy so no one will take him away from him. When Allan was going to his house he fnds Bob Tournse dead. Then Allan goes to his dad and asked what to do. He said to go to the other side of the river and stay their for a few nights. Then they find Allan and they wanted to warn him about the big storm that was coming up. They said they found the person who killed Bob Tourance. Allan showed them Stormy and Allan said that Stormy was a very good dog. hen the went back to town. I thought this book was ok. This book I read did not have lots of exciting parts in it.

      1 out of 5 stars Stormy.......2002-05-28

Stormy is a book about a boy who finds a stray dog and keeps him. This dog was known for having rabbis and hurting people but since Allan found him he suddenly became nice. The book didn't seem so realistic. The author Jim Kjelgaard had a good idea but he could have made a boy and a stray dog go through different but better adventures. The author brought a dog into this book and the title of this book is named after the dog. The dog didn't do anything or make a difference in this book. That is my opinion of Stormy.

      5 out of 5 stars Stormy.......2002-05-21

Stormy was a good book. I liked it because I like books with dogs in them, also murders. When stormy went across the ice I knew that was going to be a good part. Also when Bob Torrance died that was a good part. I knew these parts were going to be good because of the author's style of writing. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dogs, hunting and murders.
