Book Description
Owing to the development and rapid spread of communication technologies including the Internet, the world is indeed turning into a global village. The rate of introduction of new products and technologies is steadily rising. At the same time, pressures to reduce time-to-market are mounting. Only companies that are able to realize products rapidly are able to survive today.
From a technological viewpoint, rapid product realization involves rapid design, rapid prototyping, and rapid tooling. Fortunately, a class of technologies, also collectively called rapid prototyping (RP) technologies, has emerged in the last two decades or so to meet these requirements. Early technologies merely aimed to produce single part look-alikes. However, intense R&D efforts are taking place around the world to go beyond mere `look alike' single part prototyping, into functional, multi-part assemblies.
RP technologies are different from other modern manufacturing technologies in many ways. In RP, material is usually added incrementally in a layered manner and, occasionally, subtracted. Some technologies depend upon layers of resin cured under the influence of one or more CNC controlled laser beams. Others use lasers to selectively sinter layers of powdered metal. There are also RP technologies that do not use lasers at all. Indeed, RP is turning out to be a potent arena for technological creativity.
This book provides an updated overview of RP technologies at a level of detail that university engineering students taking courses on RP as well R&D and operating professionals from industry interested in RP are likely to find attractive. While the emphasis is on laser-based technologies, other processes are also discussed. With respect to each important RP process, the part/assembly modeling techniques, the materials used, process itself, advantages and disadvantages, accuracy and finish issues as well as application potential are discussed.
Book Description
Rapid Manufacturing is a new area of manufacturing developed from a family of technologies known as Rapid Prototyping. These processes have already had the effect of both improving products and reducing their development time; this in turn resulted in the development of the technology of Rapid Tooling, which implemented Rapid Prototyping techniques to improve its own processes. Rapid Manufacturing has developed as the next stage, in which the need for tooling is eliminated. It has been shown that it is economically feasible to use existing commercial Rapid Prototyping systems to manufacture series parts in quantities of up to 20,000 and customised parts in quantities of hundreds of thousands. This form of manufacturing can be incredibly cost-effective and the process is far more flexible than conventional manufacturing.
Rapid Manufacturing: An Industrial Revolution for the Digital Age addresses the academic fundamentals of Rapid Manufacturing as well as focussing on case studies and applications across a wide range of industry sectors. As a technology that allows manufacturers to create products without tools, it enables previously impossible geometries to be made. This book is abundant with images depicting the fantastic array of products that are now being commercially manufactured using these technologies.
- Includes contributions from leading researchers working at the forefront of industry.
- Features detailed illustrations throughout.
Rapid Manufacturing: An Industrial Revolution for the Digital Age is a groundbreaking text that provides excellent coverage of this fast emerging industry. It will interest manufacturing industry practitioners in research and development, product design and materials science, as well as having a theoretical appeal to researchers and post-graduate students in manufacturing engineering, product design, CAD/CAM and CIFM.

Book Description
The push to move products to market as quickly and cheaply as possible is fiercer than ever, and accordingly, engineers are always looking for new ways to provide their companies with the edge over the competition. Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), which are faster, denser, and more cost-effective than traditional programmable logic devices (PLDs), are quickly becoming one of the most widespread tools that embedded engineers can utilize in order to gain that needed edge. FPGAs are especially popular for prototyping designs, due to their superior speed and efficiency.
This book hones in on that rapid prototyping aspect of FPGA use, showing designers exactly how they can cut time off production cycles and save their companies money drained by costly mistakes, via prototyping designs with FPGAs first. Reading it will take a designer with a basic knowledge of implementing FPGAs to the next-level of FPGA use because unlike broad beginner books on FPGAs, this book presents the required design skills in a focused, practical, example-oriented manner.
*In-the-trenches expert authors assure the most applicable advice to practicing engineers
*Dual focus on successfully making critical decisions and avoiding common pitfalls appeals to engineers pressured for speed and perfection
*Hardware and software are both covered, in order to address the growing trend toward "cross-pollination" of engineering expertise

Text for grad engineering class.......2005-09-20
First printing has some different problem numbers from other printings. Check the printing number against class requirements.
Recommended........2003-11-30
I am using this book for an introductory Verilog class at my University and I must say I am truely confused by some of the reviews here. Although this book takes the reader through the most basic elements of the Verilog language, to its more complex and esoteric uses, most people here complain that the it fails to provide the advanced, cutting-edge examples they feel it should have. What? Do you really expect to learn how to build a Pentium IV from a book teaching the basics of Verilog? Get real!
This book teaches the basics, it teaches you how to use the Verilog language by providing examples that, although dated, illustrate timeless approaches that are used in every Verilog design large or small. If you can't find how to complement a variable, then its your fault, not the book; I can assure you its there. Furthermore, if you think that pointing out a few mistakes in the book, (and have obviously learnt the correct way of doing it from it), makes it rubbish, then I'm afraid there won't be any books that will fully satisfy your needs.
This is one of the best books I've encountered on the Verilog langauge. Although I wouldn't say it's as good as, say, Ashendens VHDL, it is _not_ as bad as some of the reviews here make out. Recommended!
Writing is far from refined.......2003-02-27
The writing is fragmented and incomplete statements are often seen, for example:
1. in section 4.6.4, it is written
"If A and B are vectors, A&&B returns true if both words are
positive integers." then no words there to specify "otherwise" part. If you assume otherwise A&&B returns false, you are wrong,
since A&&B returns true when both are negative integers too.
2. In 7.5.1, it says "There are two forms for delay control,...
The first form is ...", but the second form is never explained or mentioned there.
3. You often see
always @ ( a or b ) in examples with "or" in boldface,
but I could not find where "or" is defined. Even though I
understand its meaning, I wish to tell the differece from
using "|" , "||"
4. ... plus many typos
These cause a lot confusion in reading
One of the best.......2001-10-25
This book is one best to learn Verilog with. Each chapter starts with an statement of the chapters objectives, then covers the topic with many examples and finally summarizes the chapter at the end. There are an series of questions at the end of each chapter that help to solidify the concepts within each chapter. (but no answers in the book). All in all I think that this is the best overall presentation of Verilog that I have read yet. Samir Palnitar's Verilog HDL is slower paced and thus better for the novice (I read this one first). This book is slightly more advanced and seems to take you further.
An honest look.......2001-10-05
The reader from Ann Arbor was unduly harsh in his review of the text. I have read the book cover-to-cover, and found it to be very instructive and helpful. Yes, the author used some devices that are antiquated in a few examples. So what!! The purpose of the text is to instruct how to write good code--and the book does exactly that. In fact, this book even helped me write good VHDL code. Give your career a boost--buy the book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent introductionary textbook on rapid prototyping.......2006-10-25
Rafiq Noorani made a perfect job by creating introductory book on rapid prototyping and he used very effcetively his unqie 25 years experience in teaching rapid prototyping. It is well organized, creafully systematized, elegantly written, richly illustrated introductory textbook on rapid prototyping. This book is very easy to read to newcomers and non-specialists. All specific terminology are well defined and carefully explaned. It provides all necessary information for newcomers. Chapters about medical applications and new technologies are especially interested. References material provides practically all necesary information and contact addresses. Carefully formulated questions in the end of every chapter represents an excellent didactic material for teaching and self-control. Author not just loves his subject but somehow he "transduces" his love to rapid prototyping technology to reader. Excellent job. It is one of the best introductoty textbok on rapid prototyping. Highly recommended for students and everybody who is interested in this amazing technology.
Highly recommended. This book deserves special award. Introduction of color illustrations in second edition could make this excellent book even better.
Book Description
In an age where better, faster, and cheaper is the mantra for product development, rapid prototyping is recognized for its ability to help companies achieve these goals simultaneously. However, determining when to apply rapid prototyping requires an understanding of the technology, the process, and its strengths and weaknesses.
User's Guide to Rapid Prototyping will help designers, engineers, executive management, and others in the company understand how to apply rapid prototyping technologies such as 3D printing, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and fused deposition modeling to the product development process. Intertwined with rapid prototyping, the processes of rapid tooling and rapid manufacturing are also discussed.
An aid to making informed business decisions, the book provides information about when it may be right to implement rapid prototyping in-house versus going to a service provider. The path through justification, evaluation, and implementation is outlined. Readers will gain insights into the benefits, risks, and limitations of each technology.
Customer Reviews:
For the Pro or the Novice Prototyper.......2006-06-01
"User's Guide to Rapid Prototyping" is the first text of this technology and process that I have read. Since everything it presents as a process is new as compared to the established processes that I am more familiar with, every section provided new information and practical knowledge to my reading effort. There is no better way to learning a methodology than to physically perform it but with this book and a decent manufacturing background, even a novice prototyper can sow a fertile field of choices to producing quick samples or short production runs avoiding expensive alternatives.
The author properly compliments the many contributors who supplied real world application studies. He ends the text with a complete glossary and index which with both together, upgrades this "user guide" to a formal desk reference. This book will satisfy any technically oriented individual who is seeking an appreciation of this narrowly understood technology.

Book Description
Rapid Prototyping (RP) and tooling (RT) technologies have attracted tremendous R&D interests from both academia and industry in the past decade. More recent interests in RP technologies are towards functional applications of the fabricated parts, such as in rapid tooling applications and replacements of damaged components. Many RP processes and materials have been commercialized but are yet to be able to fulfill the functional requirements because of limited mechanical strengths of fabricated parts. This book thus focuses on the fundamental issues of the laser-induced RP materials and processes. The remedies and possible solutions to RP/RT pertaining to materials and processes are included. The highlighted research issues and presented results are not only informative, but will also be very useful for future commercial developments.
Book Description
Rapid Prototyping of Digital Systems: Quartus II Edition provides an exciting and challenging laboratory component for undergraduate digital logic and computer design courses using FPGAs and CAD tools for simulation and hardware implementation. Customer Reviews:
Good for Labs.......2007-03-09
This book is completely built around the Labs and has very little understanding of the mechanics. Do not use as anything other than suplimental learning because you will never learn a thing about how a DFF really works or how to build an adder from the gates. If you already understand that, it does work well to guide you through some very intensive designs including programming VGA. DE2 and UP3 board supported for this book. (I used DE2).
Book Description
Rapid Prototyping of Digital Systems, Second Edition provides an exciting and challenging laboratory component for an undergraduate digital logic design class. The more advanced topics and exercises are also appropriate for consideration at schools that have an upper level course in digital logic or programmable logic.
Design engineers working in industry will also want to consider this book for a rapid introduction to FPLD technology and logic synthesis using commercial CAD tools, especially if they have not had previous experience with the new and rapidly evolving technology.
Two tutorials on the Altera CAD tool environment, an overview of programmable logic, and a design library with several easy-to-use input and output functions were developed for this book to help the reader get started quickly. Early design examples use schematic capture and library components. VHDL is used for more complex designs after a short introduction to VHDL-based synthesis.
The second edition of the text now includes Altera's 10.1 student edition software which adds support for Windows 2000 and designs that are three times larger using the new 70,000 gate UP 1X board. All designs in the book's CD-Rom have been updated to work with the original UP 1 board or the newer UP 1X board using the new Altera student version software. A coupon is included with the text for purchase of the new UP 1X board. The additional logic and memory in the UP 1X's FLEX 10K70 is useful on larger design projects such as computers and video games.
In addition to the new software, the second edition includes an update chapter on programmable logic, new robot sensors and projects, optional Verilog examples, and a meta assembler which can be used to develop assemble language programs for the computer designs in Chapters 8 and 13.
Customer Reviews:
A good text..........2000-03-12
This is a good text for beginners and slight intermediate users of VHDL. The text specifies the Altera UP1 board (which was the board I used as I atttended my EE program). I discovered this text a little late...when I have graduated and am now using VHDL on the job for CPLD programming. It is a good text for familiarizing with VHDL constucts. Examples are very good compared to the Student Guide to VHDL by Peter Ashenden. If you wish to learn VHDL, My suggestions are to get this text and either of the following:
VHDL for PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC by Kevin Skahill
Digital Design and Modeling with VHDL by K.C. Chang
With a solid background in digital logic, these text will provide you an excellent background in digital design. Good luck.
