4 out of 5 stars Frustrated by grouped species.......2007-07-12

A useful tool for organizing, but I'm finding that Fashingbauer's decisions on merging and omitting various species don't quite fit with my own records (or my field guide!)

Still, a nice little book for keeping track of a life list.

5 out of 5 stars BEST CALENDAR FORMAT.......2007-02-03

I received the Audubon 365 Songbirds Calendar as a gift last year and enjoed it every day. I wanted to reorder it and looked for it prior to the beginning of the year. I was thrilled when I discovered that Amazon.com offered it!

With all the wall calendars available on the market, this one has an unusual format. Instead of one large picture at the top with the month's dates below, this calendar utilizes both top and bottom for the month's dates with a picture of a different songbird each day. Truly a calendar for the lover of our feathered friends!

5 out of 5 stars Audubon 365 Songbirds and Other Backyard Birds Picture-A-Day Calendar 2007.......2007-01-28

This is an excellent calendar. My five year old grandson has learned a great deal from looking at it each day. The illustrations are accurate and beauitfully done.

5 out of 5 stars A true tribute to feathered friends........2007-01-26

The photos in the 2007 Audubon Calendar are especially colorful and attractive. The information on the highlighted(larger photos) bird(s) of the month is practical and the description is excellent. The size and layout of the calendar makes it perfectly seen from across a room. The details are a handy reference if hung near a window while bird-watching. Very nice addition to any room.

5 out of 5 stars A Chirping Delight.......2007-01-15

How better to be greeted every morning than by the gorgeous Audubon Bird Wall Calendar, hanging in the bathroom? The vibrabt colors of the birds' feathers in the very close-up shots will delight you 365/24/7. Could anything with the Audubon name not be great?

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2007-01-12

We love this calendar.....full of bird pictures-a picture for EACH day! It's become a yearly must-have.

Book Description

In April 2002, the Israeli army reoccupied Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority has its headquarters. A tank blocked Raja Shehadeh's road; Israeli soldiers seized his brother's home and used him as a human shield during a search, as his frightened wife and children watched. When the Birds Stopped Singing reveals the rage and terror of daily life in these dire circumstances, showing how time passes for people imprisoned in their own homes, how they cope with being forbidden to cross the neighborhood to help a sick relative or dying friend. A chronicle of lives that somehow endure under impossible circumstances, Shehadeh's diary is a compelling and important document of a problem that seems increasingly beyond solution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very Powerful Account of Palestinian Ordinary Citizens.......2006-10-05

This book should be read by all of the Western world to gain a perspective on the ordinary citizen living in the Occupied territory of Palestine. So often, I don't think we actually realize what "Occupation" means and how much power remains in Israel's hands even when there is not an actual occupation of a specific city. The author helped me understand the Oslo Accord and how it failed to bring justice to the region.
This account ( using a diary format) really brings home what curfew means to daily life and the fear which comes when soldiers invade without regard to human feelings. Although written in 2003, I'm sure this holds true in 2006, and certainly makes me more attentive to news coming out of their continued struggle.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and very powerful book.......2005-10-27

This book left me horrified at what is going on in the Middle East. It is even worse than I thought - and I thought I knew a lot about the situation already. Raja's day to day account, written in the form of a diary, gives a first hand account of what it is like to live under Occupation.
This is hell on earth; and we in America are financing it all, with our 3 billion dollars a year that we send to Israel in military aid.
The greatest threat to World Peace lies here, and we are paying for it.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2004-04-09

(...)I purchased "When the Birds Stopped Singing" without hesitation as I looked forward to his unique human rights and legal perspective as an adult during the intifada. While his writing style is still engaging, the content is not as strong. This small book is simply a collection of short diary entries that depict his daily experiences during the difficult times. While the situation itself is heart breaking, the entries become redunant with several descriptions of outrageous Israeli soldier behavior, Palestinian subjugation and rebellion, and the difficulties of living some semblance of a normal life under such circumstances. I did not find anything new or compelling in this book, rather I felt I was perusing a random personal journal that was likely never meant to be published. Shehadeh's human rights and legal perspective never seemed to emerge in his entries which left this as an average book that will likely only appeal to those who have not heard many personal accounts of Palestinian life during the intifiada.

5 out of 5 stars life goes on.......2003-12-15

This book is about the siege of Ramallah and Shehadeh tells a heartbreaking story, with plenty of villians to go around. I expected that. To my surprise, what makes the book worth reading are the heroes. Not the Isreali soldiers. Not the PLO. Not Islamic Jihad or Hamas. The heroes of this book are the everyday people who actually try to live a normal life in the West Bank.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Funny.......2007-01-15

After purchasing this as a "gag gift" for my mother, I had to get one for myself. This calendar makes me smile everyday simply because it is silly and light. I have mine on my refridgerator and no one walks through my kitchen without commenting on it. You don't have to be a farmer or a collector of chicken memorabilia to enjoy this. You simply have to be willing to step out into the silly side and enjoy it.

I needed a new calendar for my cube at work and was rummaging through the discount bin, and I found this beauty. What luck! The cover, title and Vegas-style "lights" as edging hooked me. What better way to get a chuckle?
The calendar, despite what I consider ridiculously laughable content, is high-quality. The photos are top notch, the pages have a good weight and a semi-glossy finish. I actually think I can start to appreciate these fowl over the coming year. Who knew?

5 out of 5 stars calendar is a 'hoot'.......2007-01-04

I gave this calendar as a gift to a friend who raises chickens as a hobby, more as pets than livestock. She was thrilled and 'laughs out loud' at the images.

    Book Description

Early in 2004, a National Guardsman from Connecticut arrived in Iraq for a year's posting. Sergeant First Class Jon Trouern-Trend had been a birder since age 12. So naturally he looked for birds--and found them in surprising number and variety around Anaconda Base in the Sunni Triangle, where he was stationed: old-world warblers near the laundry pond, kestrels at the dump, wood pigeons by the airstrip, owls on the cement bunkers. And whenever he got "outside the wire"--collecting water samples from the Tigris, delivering supplies to schoolchildren, at a forward operating base in Mosul, or on a trek to the ruins of ancient Babylon--his lifelist grew longer.
From nearly day one until he left Iraq, Trouern-Trend wrote about his sightings in an on-line journal, which attracted thousands of readers and was excerpted in the press. Now some of the highlights of his "Birding Babylon" blog are collected in this small, beautiful volume, designed to resemble a birder's journal. In a Preface, the author looks back on his experience--and ahead to what the future might hold for the rooks, doves, storks, bulbuls, and sparrows of Iraq, and for its people.
This little book cuts through the politics of war like birdsong, reminding us of our imperishable connection with nature; of how birds and their journeys tie the world together; of the persistence of life even in a wasted land. It's a small act of grace.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Birding in war zone.......2007-07-16

This started out as a soldiers blog, and has more of a travelogue feel, rather than a war correspondent feel of it. The author is most interesting when presenting his walks around the camp, and finding birds in back of the laundry camp and travels. And exotic birds they are: such as Squacco heron, Greater spotted eagle, Egyptian Vulture, purple swamphen, whiskered tern, and blue-checked bee-eater. What is missing however any introspection about the war, Sadam's effect on the environment, or contrast of being in a war zone and observing nature.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed hearing about his birding experiences in Iraq.......2007-05-01

Being a bird enthusiast, AND having a son in the US Army inspired me to buy (and read) this book. I had originally bought it to give to my son (who enjoyed watching birds...mostly raptors....as a child), I decided to read it myself and was amazed at the species of birds this soldier was seeing over there. Sounds like (in addition to his mission) he did have some downtime and had some positive things to say about the region, which was nice. It has to be hard to be away from your family and friends for so long....and Jonathan found a way to stay busy and keep upbeat. Kudos to him, and God Bless our military!

5 out of 5 stars Birding Babylon-Simple Beauty in Wartime.......2006-08-18

This is a small, beautiful book. The natural phenonomena and bird-life that Jonathan Trouern-Trend desribes with such simple elegance in Birding Babylon is both comforting and poignent as it all takes place in Iraq near the beginning of our most recent conflict there.

I salute Mr. Trouern-Trend, both as a fellow "birder" as well as a poet. His writing is spare and unembelished, yet the warm sentiment he awakens in the naturalist' heart is undeniable. Here, again, poignance was the feeling he inspired, as well as admiration for a job well-done.

I love this little book. I bought 3 more copies as soon as I read it to give to friends.

Thank you, Sergeant Trouern-Trend. I salute you! Beth Hall, San Diego, CA

    5 out of 5 stars A nice perspective on a terrible war.......2006-06-12

Because I am a birder, a friend bought me this book. It is perfectly aimed, not a pure birding, and no ranting about the war. Shows the power of nature and appreciation of nature to put a lovely perspective on even the most ugliest of wars. I wanted to know what the birds he referred to looked like so am ordering the birds of the middle east. one might wish photos or more realistic drawing of the birds, but I think that would detract from the journal-like nature of this cute little book.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-05-05

This book is great! Part birding journal, part soldier's diary, and fully a reminder that Iraq isn't just a place on a map or in the newspaper. It's a quick read and you really get the feeling that you are just reading the author's notebook that he had in his back pocket while on patrol--really interesting. There's also a list of the 122 species that he saw while in Iraq, which was very enlightening--it's not just a desolate war-torn area over there--there are real signs of life! And the book itself is a really pretty hardcover book; there are even illustrations of all the different birds he saw.

5 out of 5 stars Popular and Not Popular -- War in the Air WWI.......2003-08-28

The Diary of Lt John M Grider, KIA in France, 1918, as amended and edited by his friend E.W. Springs. Springs believed it would add to the value of the book if he kept it anonymous and mysterious. The book was serialized in a popular magazine in 1926 and created a scandal because it depicts the American boys as womanizers, drinkers, etc. (the racist attitudes of the flyers caused no comment at the time). Later Griders sisters forced Springs to admit that the book was based on their brothers diary, although apparently Springs also included considerable material from his own letters home. Springs was a Princeton graduate from a wealthy family. He was a top pilot and received the DFC, shooting down 5 enemy planes. He wrote some other books but none as popular as this one. This book is gritty and tough, and depicts very well the descent from idealistic recruit to hardened and battle weary veteran.

4 out of 5 stars War Birds review.......2002-01-08

War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator is a fascinating portrait of training and combat for a WWI aviator. It is unclear to me whether the book consists of an actual diary, or is a dramatization written by a friend based on letters written by the aviator main character (see http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/usa/springs.html). The aviator was a real person with real faults (he makes some racist statements), and this makes the story all the more personal. The story reminded me of Catch-22, but is more touching because the triumphs and deaths actually occurred.

5 out of 5 stars The truth about the Air War of WWI.......2000-09-30

Although little is written of the truth to the Air War in WWI, it is often offered to history as a time of chivalry amoungst the "Upper Class Gentleman" of WWI. Most sucessful pilots, that being anymore that 5 kills, were showered with metals and given the highest honors from their fatherlands. Deeming them, The Knights of The Skies. The truth is far from reality. This book of one young man's personal, daily recolection in it's original, unaltered text, depicts the Air War as it really was. Not only can you feel the excitement and astonishment in his mind as he earns his wings in flight school, you also experience the sadness and despair as he watches his squadmates perish and learns the veracity of war and death. Illustrated by Clayton Knight, whose sketches and paintings went on to become famous after the war, this book is a must for anyone who is interested in the true reality of The Air War of WWI.

4 out of 5 stars why don't they identify the author?.......2000-09-29

It was obvious from the wealth of information of those who served with the author that the identity is known. Why not disclose who wrote the diary? We share the experiences. We watch the aviator transform from a fun loving barn stormer to a machine that can only function when airborne. The end comes and you know it is coming, the author is crumbling, his attitude has changed, he operates by reflex and his judgement is impaired. (not by booze but battle fatigue has taken over} This is too real . . .

    Book Description

Mysterious, remote, and home to many strange and marvelous creatures, the Galapagos archipelago is a bird watchers' paradise. Here one can find penguins on the Equator, the flightless cormorant, the renowned finches who played a role in Charles Darwin's theories of evolution, and many other species, some found nowhere else in the world. In Galapagos Diary renowned illustrator Hermann Heinzel pairs with wildlife photographer Barnaby Hall to capture in words and images the stunning birds and other wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.
The first half of the book provides an overall tour of the islands, describing in words, illustrations, and photographs the range of habitats and wildlife to be found there. The authors highlight the strange behavior and breeding strategies of the archipelago's land and sea birds with alluring and often amusing images.
The second half of the book is a detailed field guide with sketches as well as finished paintings, photographs, and maps. Galapagos Diary contains vibrant images and informative text on every page, along with detailed and highly descriptive field notes, moving this volume beyond conventional field guides. Hermann Heinzel's enthusiasm and skill shine through in these beautifully written notes on all the Galapagos birds including the extremely rare and endangered Dark-rumped Petrel and the Mangrove Finch.
Concluding the book is a checklist of all the birds so that bird watchers and natural history enthusiasts visiting this magnificent island archipelago can record their personal observations. Armchair naturalists alike will thrill to the vivid illustrations of the unusual creatures the inhabit these islands, and to the engaging and insightful text that transports us to the Galapagos, once known as the "Enchanted Isles."

    4 out of 5 stars A must for a bird watchers library.......2007-05-12

Heinzel and Hall have as the title suggests provided a diary with the last 100 pages being hand written notes and sketches of the birds encountered on their travels on the Galapagos Islands. The first 158 pages are rich in photographs of the birds found on the islands in their natural habitat. Photographs of some of the other animals found on the islands are included but the major focus of the book is the birds.

5 out of 5 stars Poor quality pix? "Busy" layout?? C'mon, this is well done!.......2006-03-20

I couldn't believe the panning review below. The pix are great in this colorful, beautifully laid-out book. Scenic shots (Galapagos is not the Riviera) alternate with close-ups of wildlife, maps, and colored paintings/sketches of the inimitible wildlife. "Busy" for some, packed with value for most. A great resource! The print *is* a bit small -- this book could well be republished in coffee table sized format....

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad Book.......2001-09-01

I strongly recommend not buying this book.
Visually it is a mess. The print is very small, the photographs are generally of poor quality and the layout of the pages are too busy.
The text is essentially a diary and may be of interest to the people who took the trip, but it is not well written. Although there is good information here and there you have to wade through a lot of boring text to get to it.

5 out of 5 stars A BIRD BOOK FOR "ALL".......2000-12-30

"The Galapagos Diary" is a delightful book. It has two levels of reader focus. The "top" level of focus is targetted to the reader who desires to relax and see birds in their environment. It contains "portraits" of the bird population featuring photographs by Barnaby Hall. It appears to be designed for relaxation and enjoyment as opposed to detailed study. The second level appears to be intended for the "student." It uses a unique combination of photographs and sketches to present the characteristics of the Galapagos' birds, their actions, and their environment. The two-level focus of the volume makes the book a desirable gift, because it targets a wide range of readers with varying backgrounds, interests, and ages. You don't need to know how to spell ornithologist to enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Book.......2000-12-30

Galapagos Diary was one Christmas present I couldn't seem to put down. Although I have never visited the Islands and have no special interest in wildlife, I found the pictures remarkable and the text compelling. I had no idea such unusual creatures inhabited the Galapagos Islands. The Blue Footed Boobies (now, really, who comes up with these names?) are my favorite with Great Frigatebirds coming in a close second. The book's young photographer, Barnaby Hall, is incredibly talented for his age--he looks to have been around 15 when he took these. What a professional job! I naturally recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos (it has a helpful section with sketches to help identify the birds and other wildlife), but also for anyone with a general interest in nature. If you like those Nature specials on television, this book is for you. As for me, I've added the Galapagos Islands to my list of Places to Go in the future!

    Book Description

When it comes to birdwatching (a passion for seventy million Americans), no name carries more authority than the National Audubon Society. And for 2007, the organization synonymous with birds presents another year of spectacular species from around the world. Shore birds, birds of prey, tropical birds, desert birds, even birds from your own backyard. Accompanying the vivid photographs is a surfeit of lively and authoritative text with captions that highlight characteristics, plumage, songs and calls, nesting and breeding habits, common and Latin names, and habitats.

    5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted.......2007-01-16

This product was a gift for someone else, but I have received excellent feedback from her about it. She loves the fact that each day has a different bird along with some text about each one. Better than some of those other similar calendar that have nothing to read about it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pictorial and facts for any bird lover.......2007-01-15

This is the second year that I've purchased this calendar, and I'm amazed at the freshness of the pictures. This is a excellent calendar for the bird watcher, lover or enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Audubon page a day Calendar.......2007-01-13

This is not a book but each page gives a detailed description of a bird with a beautiful pic. I have been getting them for years and have seen few duplications. I love the calendar

5 out of 5 stars Fun and informative.......2007-01-12

I'm enjoying learning about different birds every day. It's a bright and colorful way to wake up in the morning.

    3 out of 5 stars Great Calendar-Plastic Back NOT.......2007-01-11

This is a great page-a-day calendar for 2007. Colorful pictures of different birds along with a nice description, the moon phases, US and international holidays. BUT, whoever designed the plastic base/back was not thinking or had never used a desk calendar that needed to be propped up. The plastic leg that pulls out in the back to stand up the calendar is way too short. The calendar almost lays down. I have to put a small box underneath the prop leg to have the calendar stand up at an angle where I can see it without standing up and looking down at it.

I will know to check for this next time.
