Book Description
This collection of moving black-and-white photographs of recipients of the Medal of Honor shows not the glory of war, but the underlying spirit and humanity of true heroism. Forty-eight portraits are combined with comments, observations, and statements from the recipients of America's highest military honor. This compilation of words and pictures of men who served in the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marine Corps is both humbling and poignant. Their actions and lives vary as much as the conflicts (World War II, Korea, and Vietnam) and include a conscientious objector who never wielded a weapon and a man known as the "Last Eagle," as he was the last World War II pilot to retire. Each recipient's full official citation is included in the appendix.

A GREAT READ.......2003-06-25
There are a couple of good books about CMH winners. The thing I liked about this one was the photo's. All the winners in this book survived, and we get to see the man, as well read about his actions.
I really enjoyed this one. A very fast read
Touching on a different level.......2001-07-28
Mr. Casalini's book is incredible -- I found myself tearing up at some of the descriptions and pictures. These men are incredibly brave, but at the same time, none seemed to be anything but the guy next door. The wonderfulness of ordinary was truly captured and championed in this amazing book.
A remarkable and memorable compilation of portrait studies.......2001-07-06
Ordinary Heroes is a remarkable and memorable compilation of portrait studies showcasing winners of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Each photo is accompanied by an insightful caption or quotation arising from photographer Tom Casalini's personal interview with the recipient. Ordinary Heroes is a virtually unique contribution to military studies and a very highly recommended addition to community library collections -- especially as a Veteran's Day memorial acquisition or as a memorial donation by a Veteran's group or association.
Discover the Wonderfulness of Ordinary.......2001-02-07
While attempting with words to enter into the souls of the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, Tim Wallis' commentary ebbs on the ordinary heroes, who are protectors of the Medal of Honor. The tremendous impact of the words that are spoken is second only to the full page photographs of the father/husband/patriot's in all their splendor. The photographs are not of men in full dress with the Medal around their neck, as you would think, but of them on the back porch, in the orchard or merely on the couch in prayer. The book shows us all what can be found if only we look a little harder. We too might discover the wonderfulness of ordinary.
Book Description
In this book, 42 teachers recount the ways they went beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the lives of their students. A first-grade teacher describes how she was able to undergo radiation and chemotherapy without missing a day of school because her students gave her energy and courage. A drama teacher in Houston explains that she makes casting decisions knowing that sometimes the role may be better for the student than the student is for the role. In Fort Wayne, Indiana, a teacher recalls how he used a student's suicide as an opportunity for other students to reflect and ultimately succeed. An extensive parent and teacher resource guide is included and a portion of the profits will be donated to charities listed in the book.

johnson is the shiznitzers. ewok ewok ewok.......2002-12-17
wow, dat book was great. but the more incredible part was the johnson park. Ms. Johnson's story was "delicious". When i turned to the page with picture of Ms. Johnson with a feather boa, i immediately dropped the book and i was scared for life. Then, when i mustered enough will power to pick up the book, i started to read the "Johnson" story. At first, i thought it was another dumb story, just like the other ones. but then, at the end, tears slowly trickled down my face and next thing i knew, the book turned to the page with the horrid picture and i dropped the book again. But only this time, on my toe. Although the book did more harm to me and i did to it, i thought that the book was great, especially the Susan Johnson story. Kudos and Accalades to you!
Wow.......2002-05-13
Ms. Johnson is wow. She really wrote an extraordinary book here. Her sections is almost as compelling as the tv show 24. The author has compiled some pretty wonderful stories that everyone would look forward to seeing. I'm surprised that Ms. Basille is not in this book, because she is the best teacher on earth. I had Ms. Johnson first quarter, but she was kind of boring. She would constantly talk about potato this and potato that. And if you read her section of the novel, think of a woman with the highest voice you've ever heard. Then whats up with her clothes. On Mardi Gras, she looked like an animal. And she wears the strangest shoes you've ever seen. I really enjoy reading her material. She is a published author you know. The best part about her is that she doesnt teach one real course. Lets see, Marketing (haha) Intro to occ what a joke, UCI not even funny. I'm surprised she still has a job. Then there is the UCII teacher Ms. Basille, she's awesome. Ms.Basille if you are reading this we love you. Ms. J doesnt compare to Ms. Basille becasue Ms. Basille knows what shes talking about while Ms. J just sits there and thinks about these weirdo emails. Ms. J you are alright Ms. Basille rules, period 4, T1 comp lab, UCII. Yeah
Wow.......2002-05-13

I'm a teacher, and I feel energized! I've been reading Jackie Waldman's book...a few pages at a time. It's hard to put down. I don't know if I love the teachers or the kids more! It's very obvious we are learning from each other. If you love kids, read this book! If you are a teacher or want to know a few great ones, read this book. I hope you will feel the love that has gone into Teachers with the Courage to Give. Thank you Jackie for a great tribute.

Book Description
Written for parents, teachers, counselors, and everyone else involved with raising children, this book emphasizes the need for kids to learn how to make smart decisions in the face of today's permissive culture and strong peer pressure. Many parents go to great lengths to protect their children from dangerous influences, boredom, want, and even the consequences of the kids' own choices, but Elisa Medhus winning author of the 2002 Parent's Choice Award and National Parenting Publication Award believes this doesn't allow kids to develop the skills they need to be successful adults. She tells readers how to give their children opportunities to overcome adversity while still in a loving family environment, so they can develop internal wisdom, creative problem-solving skills, and basic common sense. Raising Everyday Heroes offers easy-to-implement techniques for raising responsible, self-reliant children.

Focuses on common pitfalls kids encounter.......2004-10-10
Parents are daily required to make important choices about kids, deciding how best to raise them to be self-reliant: Raising Everyday Heroes focuses on common pitfalls kids encounter when facing the world outside of home. A generation of children are displaying a lack of age-appropriate competence, Dr. Medhus maintains in Raising Everday Heroes; her book identifies these common pitfalls.
A wonderful resource for parents.......2004-07-06
Dr. Medhus has written an important book that addresses the most significant issues parents face in raising children. Raising Everyday Heroes is filled with practical strategies for helping children become confident and self-reliant, as well as capable of making good decisions based on strong internal values. Like Dr. Medhus's other books, Raising Everyday Heroes is written with warmth, understanding, humor and wisdom, making it as readable as it is informative.
Fantastic advice.......2004-06-25
In Raising Everyday Heroes, Elisa Medhus gives parents the essential tools they need to 1)raise responsible, caring kids and 2)help parents learn ways they can make a difference in the world and act as strong role models for their kids. And the tips she offers start by teaching children as young as 18 months that they too, have an important role in life and society, as they learn basic skills -- from picking up toys to picking out their breakfast -- that teach them responsibility and therefore, builds strong character and work ethic. The tips are easy to read and are bulleted, great for busy parents -- or any parent looking for quick tips to help them raise kids who make a difference.
Pearls Of Wisdom From A Mother Of 5!.......2004-06-17
I found Raising Everyday Heroes to be refreshingly honest and to the point. Dr. Medhus hits the nail on the head! I love how she uses her own experiences to make a point and the way she recants those experiences with such charm and wit. Simply and yet wonderfully written. She keeps the readers interest. Her views on and recommendations for instructing and motivating today's children to be tomorrow's self reliant adults, make this book a must for all parents and non-parents alike. I have used some of her pointers in the workplace as well and it worked like a charm! Well done!
Much Needed Book.......2004-06-10
This is perhaps the single most important book for any parent or grandparent to read. Kids today are so rescued from nearly every hardship and challenge, that I worry about what that means for our future and our kids. I'm not alone in my concerns. Many parents I know make the same mistakes I've made over and over by rescuing their kids from sibling arguments, tough homework assignments, the consequences for their mistakes, frustration, boredom and delayed gratification. And they're afraid too. But Medhus gives us all hope by showing us how we can play to our children's strengths to bring out the hero that lies within.

For some people, animal shelters seem dark, desperate places. All terrified barks and frightened hisses, the shelter is the last stop for many an animal on what has too often been a painful journey. For others, the shelter is a place of hope, where the perfect dog or cat waits to be adopted. In her time spent volunteering at the Columbia-Greene Humane Society, author Elizabeth Hess discovered that shelter life couldn't be defined in such simple terms. In this "subterranean animal culture," life is a "complex mix of people and animals, emotion and ideology ... where life and death decisions are made as regularly as coffee."
Hess, an arts journalist who has written for the Village Voice and the Washington Post among other publications, first visited the shelter to adopt a dog for her daughter. A "series of ramshackle buildings and a shabby trailer, surrounded by a few chickens and a couple of contented cats," the Columbia-Greene Humane Society grounds were humble at best. But what Hess found inside the shelter inspired her to write Lost and Found: Dogs, Cats, and Everyday Heroes at a Country Animal Shelter. From the dog kennels and the cat rooms to a puppy mill raid and rides in the shelter ambulance, Hess introduces innumerable animals and humans who will inspire, educate, and break your heart. With more than 20 million animals ending up in shelters each year in the United States alone, Hess's demand to rethink our relationships with domestic animals couldn't have come at a better time. Perceptive, well-written, and utterly moving, Lost and Found is a rare find indeed. --Stefanie Hargreaves

Insightful and thought provoking.......2007-05-11
I highly recommend this book to anyone considering a pet. It makes you think about what repercussions are possible if you obtain a pet on a whim and do not dedicate yourself to training and caring for it. It shows the results of our society's "throwaway" mentality, the lack of education on the effects of pet overpopulation and the way our declining economy has added to the problem by not allowing many citizens the money to afford proper pet care and sterilization.
This books shows a cross section of a typical animal shelter and the fact that there are many not so happy endings, mostly because of humans and their failure to do right by their pets.
A very realistic view of an animal shelter.......2002-11-20
I've volunteered at the animal shelter in my town for a few years now, but have never had quite as much insight as this book provided. I get the feeling the shelter in the book has a smaller volunteer base than the shelter I have dealt with based on the details they were willing to share with her. This was a very uplifting book that explained a lot about why shelters work the way they do (ie rules about who can adopt, what happens when they get lost pets, etc.). Unfortunately, it is most likely to be read by the people that already understand these rules and why they exist.
Required reading for all current and wannabe pet owners.......2002-10-29
Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. I'm among those who do know what kind of responsibility it takes to own a dog. I'm the happy 'Mom' of 2 terriers, one of which is a rescue dog. It is true about rescued animals - they know they've been given another chance and will give you their love many times over.
Elizabeth Hess was down to earth in showing the trials and successes an animal shelter goes through. If you know someone who's not sure about getting a pet, I highly suggest they read this book. It'll make them think twice. If you know someone with misconceptions that all shelter animals get homes, give them this book as a wakeup call! A pet can take up as much or more of your time than a human baby, but the human race has made dogs, cats and other animals disposeable. There are happy endings as well as sad in the book, but it's worth buying. As the kids would say, we give it a 2 paws up!
The most wonderful compassionate reality book!.......2002-10-29
This book was so good I could not put it down. A realistic yet compassionate look at shelters today. A must read!
You'll want copies for your friends........2002-09-17
This behind the scenes look at an animal shelter and the everyday lives of the animals, and the people that work there is a beautifully told, heart warming, sometimes devistating story. It certainly drives the point home to adopt your pet rather than buy from a breeder or pet store. It's a book you'll not want to put down, and will remember long after you have. My friends all got copies.
Book Description
“I had always assumed that heroism was reserved for the very few, but I no longer believe that to be true. I have come to believe that heroism is clearly attainable to each of us–that all we have to do to become heroes is, with God’s help, to grow into the ideal each of us harbors in our hearts.” –Joe Wheeler, from Everyday Heroes
In the timeless tradition of Joe Wheeler’s previous anthologies, Volume 2 of his Forged in the Fire series takes you on a succession of fascinating journeys into personal courage–stories that will inspire you, too, to think, act, and live with moral courage in the face of everyday challenges and extraordinary crises.
These 21 stories–many certifiably true, others inspired by real-life experiences–spotlight ordinary men, women, and children who met a moment or season of challenge with extraordinary honor and courage. You and your loved ones will be inspired and emboldened to also “do the right thing”–no matter the cost–as you encounter crossroads in your own lives.
