Book Description
In the bestselling tradition of Ten Things I Wish I'd Known......and The Right Words at the Right Time comes a collection of inspirational wisdom from beloved lacrosse coach, the late Diane Geppi-Aikens. Loyola College of Maryland Women's Lacrosse Coach Diane Geppi-Aikens would have been a remarkable role model simply as one of the nation's top lacrosse coaches. But this single mother of four battled inoperable brain tumors for eight years. Partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair, Geppi-Aikens missed only one game as she coached her #1 ranked team into the semi-finals of the NCAAchampionships. In spite of the terrible tragedy threatening her life, she managed to get her players to consider her lucky. Now, in the wake of this courageous woman's death comes an incredibly inspirational book. In 20 short chapters, Geppi-Aikens's unique and uplifting teachings live on through the memories of those she inspired most. H In Geppi-Aikens's final season, she and her players made memorable appearances on the Today show, Good Morning America, and CBS Evening News. She was also featured in Sports Illustrated, College Sports TV, and Lacrosse Magazine. H Books offering inspirational advice from high-profile women, such as Maria Shriver's Ten Things I Wish I'd Known.... (Warner, 2000) and Marlo Thomas's The Right Word at the Right Time (Atria, 4/02), are perennial bestsellers. H Diane Geppi-Aikens won the 2003 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Inspiration Award. The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association has renamed their Lifetime Achievement Award in her honor. H Chip Silverman is the author of five books, including Diner Guys (Carroll, 1989) and The Block (Scribe, 1994), which served as the basis for Barry Levinson's famous films, including the classic Diner. He is a former lacrosse player and was also Head Coach for Morgan State College and for the University of Baltimore.

I also purchased the book for my daughter's graduation. The inspirational messages and life lessons from Diane Geppi-Aikens appeal to people from all walks of life.

Lucky Every Day.......2004-05-18
Life lessons learned and tested; on and off the lacrosse field.
A great inspirational book for yourself and better shared as a gift to your family and friends.
This book is not to be missed!.......2004-04-29
"Lucky Every Day," written by Chip Silverman, should be read by all. Diane Geppi-Aikens is a true inspiration. Her principles for living can be applied to every aspect of my life, every day of my life. This book is not to be missed!
I'd like to give it ten stars.......2004-04-24
I followed Ms. Geppi-Aikens final season at Loyola last year through articles in national publications along with television coverage such as the Today Show, ESPN, and Good Morning America. Her accomplishments as a lacrosse coach, and as an individual dying of brain cancer were awe-inspiring. Because of that I bought her book "Lucky Every Day"; and, after reading it in one sitting I now understand why she was such a remarkable individual. Author Chip Silverman has put together an outstanding series of stories from her former players that are motivating and truly inspirational; and relate not just to sports, but to every facet of humanity. Interestingly, I found this book quite a departure from two other books that I have read by Silverman: Diner Guys which follows the lives of the guys immortalized in Barry Levinson's film "Diner"; and "Ten Bears" an account of the first and only black college lacrosse team and its exploits as told by Silverman, the white coach of the black team. I would love to give ten stars to "Lucky Every Day", but you limit me to five.
Inspirational book.......2004-04-23
I enjoyed reading this book. It was very fast reading and most enjoyable. One does not have to be a lacrosse or sports fan to be inspired by the lessons of Diane Geppi-Aikens. The anecdotes from her former players and the format of each chapter can inspire and motivate people from all walks of life be it business, social, etc. It also makes a great graduation gift, and I am buying my mother one for Mother's Day.

Very Inspiring.......2007-08-09
I highly reccomend this book, it shares very interesting stories about others experiences with life, very upbeat and inspiring.
Excellent Reading.......2007-05-09
This just a great book, and I liked the way it was delieved so fast.
This Book Surprised Me.......2006-11-01
At first glance, I thought this was just another devotional book written by the women on the cover. It surprised me that it is not a devo but a collection of inspirational short stories, written by the author, about women who have made -- some who are making -- a difference in the world. Then I discovered the alphabetical order of names, making it an easy reference to locate a woman and read about her. The enormous variety of women was a surprise; one funded a seminary, "Biddy" Chambers published her husband's sermons, one was a martyr for Christ, some were preachers, monarchs, reformers, stay-at-home moms who founded companies, others today are singers, songwriters, and evangelists, and one is our First Lady. What a surprise to discover the scores of websites and resources listed in the back. I'm pleasantly surprised with the easy-to-read format and challenging "My Response" question at the end of each short story.
As a professional speaker and writer on child behavior, I recognize many of my colleagues. This book is well-written and enlightening. It's definitely a delight and a keeper!

You have got to have it!.......2006-10-27
I was so inspired by the pages of Sisterhood of Faith. Each page tells of women making a difference for the cause of Christ. Sometimes we look at our lives and struggle with our day to day issues. When I begin my morning reading a page from this book it helps me put my life into perspective. The women of this book took their ordinary lives and focused their efforts towards the cause of Christ. If you are a housewife that needs encouragement, a woman in ministry who is struggling with her call or someone who wants to start her day being uplifted, this is the book for you! You have got to have it!
Book Description
In this rich and illuminating book, the Pulitzer Prize-winning, bestselling author Robert Coles creates a portrait of moral leadership--what it is, and how it is achieved--through stories of people who have led and inspired him: Robert Kennedy, Dorothy Day, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Erik Erikson, a Boston bus driver, teachers in college, medical school, and elementary school, among others.
Coles tells how to be a moral leader and shows how the intervention of one person can change the course of history, as well as influence the day-to-day quality of life in our homes, schools, communities, and nation. We need to "hand one another along" in life, says Coles, quoting his friend Walker Percy, and in
Lives of Moral Leadership he explores how each of us can be engaged in a continual and mutual life-giving process of personal and national leadership development. Coles discusses how the actions of the American president affect the way people feel about themselves and the country, and-citing the influence of Shakespeare's Henry V on Robert Kennedy, and of Tolstoy's
Anna Karenina on his own mother--explains how reading literature can motivate action and growth. The way in which moral leaders emerge today, and for all time, comes vividly to light in this brilliant book by one of America's finest teachers and writers.

Who becomes a legend most? For more than two years, a panel composed of such arbiters of culture as Leo Castelli, Rita Dove, Bruce Jenner, Joyce Carol Oates, Daniel Schorr, Gay Talese, Pierre Trudeau, and Eli Wallach pondered that question and came up with a list of the 200 most important icons of the 20th century. Their choices are compiled in this wonderfully designed book. Each icon merits a tall, vertically oriented, two-page spread. A full-page portrait is expertly reproduced on the right-hand side, and, given its length, a surprisingly informative biography takes up the facing page. Uncommon photos of the usual suspects are here--Marilyn Monroe, Martin Luther King Jr., James Joyce, Babe Ruth, Bette Davis, Jesse Owens, Marlon Brando, JFK, Anna Pavlova, even Michael Jordan. But some of the most pleasing inclusions are the surprises--the people who shaped the century but whose faces are less recognizable. This group includes philosophers Hannah Arendt and Carl Jung; South African doctor Christiann Barnard, who performed the first successful human heart transplant surgery; scientist Enrico Fermi, whose work led directly to the discovery of nuclear fission; Maria Montessori, who revolutionized early childhood education; legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini; and James Watson and Francis Crick, who discovered the shape of DNA. This is a well-timed book, for as the century draws to a close, one can hardly think of a better way to take stock of the dramatic events, advances, and--arguably--declines that have shaped the human experience over the past 100 years.

A Good Book, Despite Certain Omissions.......2001-11-19
This isn't really that bad a book. The text was well written for each individual mentioned and the photographs were quite good, my favorite was the one with Mikhail Gorbachev hand feeding a squirrel on a tree. Still, there are certain individuals this book left out who I thought should have made it. Below is a list of those who I feel should have been in this book.
Pope John Paul II
Nikita Khruschtev
J. Edgar Hoover
Ayatollah Khomeni
Wayne Gretzky
Vince Lombardi
Howard Stern
Jimi Hendrix
Thelonius Monk
The Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen
Lenny Bruce
George S. Patton
Joe Montana
Gloria Steinman
Janis Joplin
Harrison Ford
Irving Berlin
Bill Clinton
Charles Manson
Howard Cosell
Barbara Cady is the best!.......1999-12-30
This book, I think is ine of the most influential books of the 20th century, and certainely one of the most entertaining! Mother Theresa, and Micheal Jordan were certainely, and are included in this book; but the thing that impresed me most is that I found Um Kolthum on the list. I thank Barrbara Cady for including her in, I greatly appreciate it. If you find a customer that disagrees with the content of this magneficent, beautiful book, don't agree with him. He is certainely a bad reader. People trust me with this! A great read!
A real collectors Item.......1999-10-06
Unlike a number of other books about the ranking of the "greatest" of the 20th century, this book does not rank anyone. This book lists the 200 men and women, in alphabetical order, who have made a difference during the last 100 years.
Cady blends detail with a personal touch in each biographical synopsis. The photos, in black and white, give the reader a face to put to the story. Photographer Jean-Jacques Naudet is a master of capturing the essence of the person on film.
While the price of the book is a bit hefty, your money is well spent in this collectable piece of work. For the past hundred years you have read stories about JFK, Ali, Mother Theresa, Michael Jordan now you can own a part of history.
I was most impressed by the author's ability to remain unbiased in the reporting. While I may not have include some of the people, I was no doubt impressed by the list. I am certain that this book will be real family or school crowd pleaser well into the next century.
Big Big Book.......1999-05-06
This is a massive book in terms of physical size. It has to weigh at least 5-10 pounds and could probably be used as a home protection device. Great gift idea. Giant!
An excellent, well-designed & -illustrated book.......1999-02-01
But, alas, too American in the perspective. The selection includes people who are only of importance in the U.S. area. I.e. baseball & football players and t.v. entertainers (Oprah!)And in choosing Oppenheimer and Fermi instead of the far more important Niels Bohr. Further, Karen Blixen is presented by her alias Isak Dinesen - quite embarassing. The photos, though, are phantastic and the layout creative. In spite of an American chauvenism in the selection, the book makes a brilliant statement heading for the millennium.

Horrible.......2003-04-18
This book gave too many unwanted details and needed to cover the women in general. I do like interesting facts every once in while, but these facts weren't even interesting. It was also poorly written. I would not recommend this book to anyone!
A Disappointing Read.......2002-11-25
I am a graduate student in American History with a focus on women and their roles in the Civil War. As such I was pleased to find Garrison's Amazing Women. However, once I started reading the book I was extremely disappointed. One of the first things I noticed was the lack of citations and a bibliography. Garrison neglects to credit anyone with the information he gathered for this particular work except to say that you can find alot of information on the internet. And while I understand Garrison's intended audience to be the general public where footnotes are found to be annoying, a bibliography would surely be helpful to anyone interested in learning more about these women. Furthermore, Garrison displays an attitude throughout the work that some of the acts and actions credited to women must surely be exaggerated. What I found to be particularly annoying with the work was the attention given to the men that were spouses to the women chosen for the work. If the book is about women, write about the women. To make matters worse, Garrison also includes among his Amazing Women a man that cross-dresses. This information is irrelevant to the subject. The only positive thing I can say about Amazing Women is that Garrison provides a nice list of women who played important and diverse roles during the war. So, if you are looking for research, this book is a huge disappointment. But if you are looking for a quick read where all the information is assumed to be correct, without providing any proof then this is your book. However, if you are truly interested in learning about women's roles in the Civil War I would suggest Mary Elizabeth Massey's Women in the Civil War (University of Nebraska Press, 1966) or Elizabeth D. Leonard's All the Daring of the Soldier (Penguin Books, 1999).
Very good historical piece!! Very enjoyable!!.......2001-09-18
This was really good. It's about various women that helped shape the Civil War, whether by being Spies, Soldiers, Journalists, Angels of Mercy, or whatever. You'll be surprised how far some of these women went for their cause, and how much they accomplished in that time frame that provided them with so little independent resources. This book is a good introduction into these women, that may trigger your interest to learn more about them. I wish it provided even more information on these people, but basically it seemed to be a book to introduce you to these women and tell of their actions, then go locate more information about them.
Enlightening.......2000-04-03
This book did an excellent job on describing the roles in which women took part in during the Civil War. Webb Garrison did an excellent job choosing women to write about. Both Southern and Northern women were talked about, showing readers that these women were not as different as they had thought they were.

Wonderful Resource.......2007-07-30
The inspiration for AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE: Women of Hope was a series of posters created by Bread and Roses, a cultural project sponsored by a union. The goal was to provide images of strong women who used their talents to make the world a better place. The book features the images of these courageous women along with a one page biographical sketch. The women represent all types of backgrounds, from Ida B. Wells-Barnett a school teacher turned activist/journalist, the actress Ruby Dee, writers such as Toni Morrison and Alice Walker, Alexa Canady, the first black female neurosurgeon, and Dr. Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut. The book concludes with a listing, by category, of other extraordinary black women and an annotated bibliography, each of which could be used for further study.
AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE: Women of Hope is not the kind of book you would expect children to read from cover to cover. Instead, it is more of a resource book children can refer to time and again for the sake of learning or simply for inspiration. Each of the women highlighted in the book have interesting stories, and many of them had to overcome tremendous odds before accomplishing great things. I particularly enjoyed the book's overarching themes, which were to work hard and persevere in the face of challenges. This book is a wonderful testament to the strength and talent of women of color.

Accomplishes Its Goal.......2003-03-16
This work inspired me...reminded me what I'm made of and that I can indeed do anything I choose. These women are powerful and pure, living their purpose. I am grateful to know about them.
Book Description
Just in time for Women's History Month, here are short, spirited profiles of twenty women who impacted life in America by speaking out against injustice and fighting for social improvements. The folksy, friendly narrative introduces such fascinating figures as Sojourner Truth, abolitionist preacher; Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War physician; Margaret Sanger, birth control pioneer; and Doris Haddock, a ninety-two-year-old champion of campaign-finance reform. The book spans over two hundred years of American history and includes time lines for such important social movements as abolition, woman suffrage, labor, and civil rights. Readers inspired by these fiery women can use the civil action tips and resources in the back of the book to do some of their own rabble-rousing.

A must read for ALL - girls & boys young and old!.......2004-12-23
I originally purchased this book for my younger sister, age 11, so that she might have a source of inspiration and some positive role models. Something to show her to make her proud of all the women who came before us who fought real hard to make this country what it is now. And also something that showed that the America that our "founding fathers" built, the "land of the free" that claimed that we all had "certain inalienable rights" actually left out the vast majority of Americans: black people - enslaved and free alike, women, American Indians, poor whites, and anyone who did not own property... That it took the courage, boldness, vision, and voices of women, men, and children, of all colors and backgrounds, who were not afraid to fight and struggle against tremendous odds to make this nation live up to its founding promises of "life, liberty, and justice for all." And that this is a fight that is still with us today... With this book i hope that my little sister can picture herself as someone who can follow the footsteps of these great women and carry on the work they started...
What i didn't expect was to find a book that had as much to teach me as it did to teach her! Don't i wish i could have had such a good resource when i was her age. Don't hesitate to get yourself or someone you love a copy of this great little book.
