Book Description

Leo isn't reading, or writing, or drawing, or even speaking, and his father is concerned. But Leo's mother isn't. She knows her son will do all those things, and more, when he's ready. 'Reassuring for other late bloomers, this book is illustrated with beguiling pictures.' -- Saturday Review.

2 out of 5 stars Moral of Story: Dad should do nothing but watch the tube..........2007-09-04

I can certainly understand how this book would heighten the insecurities of a child already unsure of his/her abilities. And I loathe--loathe!!--a book that suggests that watching television is constructive behavior in any context. Dad should watch TV to help his kid Leo read? Whhhhaaaat???

I'm giving it more than one star because the illustrations are pleasant and I suppose the story might help some kids be more tolerant of "late bloomers." I would never buy this, though. We received the book as a gift, and, like another reviewer, I'm strongly tempted to toss this thing in the trash.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Must-have.......2007-05-07

A wonderful resource to have as part of your professional library when working with children.

1 out of 5 stars This is a horrible book to give a kid.......2007-03-17

My parents gave this book to me when I was a kid because I was a "late bloomer". I really think that was the beginning of my self esteem issues. I was unaware that I was a "late bloomer" until they pointed it out to me by giving me the book. I can remember being so sad reading it and thinking there was something wrong with me. Now that my daughter is a bit of a late bloomer, it's gotten me thinking about this book. Please don't buy it for your kid. If you do, please explain to them why you're giving it to them. Don't leave it to them to draw their own conclusions that they are like Leo they can't do anything right.

2 out of 5 stars bad portrayal of dads.......2007-01-18

I hate how this book protrays the father, as an unattached lion who watches tv rather than helping his son bloom. I bought this book for my autistic son for Christmas, read it and put it in the trash. It makes Dads look uninvolved and is not a good portrayal at all. My husband is an excellent father and certianly would not choose to watch tv over helping my son learn.

Very dissapointed in this book and honestly surprised by all these positive comments.

5 out of 5 stars Leo is Lovely.......2007-01-05

My son's first grade teacher recommended this book. Our son is bright but slow to start reading. This was a nice reminder of that with humorous illustrations and the gentle point that we all develop at our own pace.

Book Description

Whereas Volume I of this series investigates the overall structure of children's picture storybooks at the macro level, this volume, Volume II, investigates the very building blocks of picture storybooks at the micro level: the word, the sentence, the scene and the story. We look at the importance of word choice for giving the story meaning and cohesion. We look at ways to change sentence structure to emphasize the information that is important, and to ensure that sentences flow easily from one to another. We look at the scene: how to begin it, how to end it, and how to create the Beats of action-reaction that make up the scene. And finally we look at the story: what types of problems must a character solve? When does a story introduce a problem? And once a problem is intro-duced, how do picture storybooks move from problem to solution? What types of solutions do characters find? Is there any part of a story that occurs after the solution is found? To answer these and other questions is to describe storytelling strategies. We look at enduringly popular children's picture storybooks to see what storytelling strategies they employ.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for picture book writers.......2007-09-04

I was having trouble with rhythm and beats in my picture book writing. This book really helped me learn the beat structure in picture book writing and how they create rhythm. My picture book writing seemed flat and lifeless and now, thanks to this book, it has the rhythm it was lacking. I would also suggest Volumes I and III for other parts of picture book writing. Definitely a must have for those writing picture books and those needing to learn the structure, rhythm and specific language used in those types of books.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Easy-to-understand.......2006-11-14

I'm thrilled to see a second volume to Bine-Stock's first in this series dedicated to taking the mystery out of writing a picture book. Bine-Stock rises to the top once again as she explains, simply and clearly, how to build a picture book from the ground up. Focusing on choosing the right words, using the best sentence structure, creating a scene, and utilizing a powerful storytelling technique, this book is a valuable tool. I plan on recommending it to other authors I know!

    Book Description

It's time to focus on what we gain with age, not what we lose. . . . In Secrets of Becoming a Late Bloomer, Connie Goldman and Richard Mahler confirm in a striking way what I've believed for some time: we need a brand-new image of aging. That new image must replace yesterday's view of maturity as a period of stagnation and decline with the idea that the latter part if life can be truly exciting and a time of growth, productivity, and newfound pleasures-if we know the secrets of becoming a late bloomer. --From the foreword by Ken Dychtwald, Ph.D., President and CEO, Age Wave, Inc.

    Book Description

Buried secrets and past betrayals, old friendships and new beginnings are at the heart of this rich, compelling bestseller from Fern Michaels, one of today's most popular novelists.

Twenty years after a childhood accident left a permanent shadow over her life, Cady Jordan has returned to her Pennsylvania hometown. Her beloved grandmother Lola, a retired movie star, needs Cady's care -- but soon after arriving at Lola's lavish estate, it's clear that the colorful actress will be Cady's mentor to living life to the fullest. Cady wants nothing more than to come out of her shell, but to do so means resurrecting her lost memories of the day when a foolish stunt ended with a young bully's death and Cady's serious injury -- a tragedy for which her friends held Cady responsible. They're adults now -- a lawyer, a businessman, a stay-at-home mom. And a police chief: Boomer Ward, whose flaring attraction works on Cady's guarded heart. Now, Cady must determine who can be trusted as she draws closer to Boomer and confronts those who wish she'd never returned. Old wounds may be healed, but can Cady close a door on her heartache and embrace a bright new life?

"From New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels comes her most emotionally powerful novel to date -- a heartwarming tale of love and envy, friendship and forgiveness, that introduces an unforgettable heroine, Cady Jordan, who comes into her own as she recovers her memory of a childhood tragedy. Twenty years have passed since the incident involving six lonely children at a secret playground in Indigo Valley, Pennsylvania, which left the town bully dead and ten-year-old Cady Jordan seriously injured. Now Cady has returned to the valley to care for her ailing grandmother, Lola, an eccentric retired Wlm star, who is the only person Cady has ever truly loved. While Cady has recovered physically and has grown into an attractive and intelligent but overly cautious young woman, she has no memory of her childhood tragedy. Lola desperately wants to see Cady embrace life and Wnd the happiness she deserves, so she pushes her granddaughter to ""remember"" so she can go forward with her life. As Cady reacquaints herself with her old friends -- Amy, who is now a wife and mother; Andy, an insurance agent; Pete, an attorney; and Mac, the town's chief of police -- she begins to recall bits and pieces of what happened that fateful day. Cady also discovers a new zest for life and falls in love for the Wrst time. But her friends don't want her to remember. If the truth comes out, their safe and secure lives might be ruined forever. Which of them will do what is best for Cady and acknowledge the truth? Which of them will betray her again and do what is best for themselves? With vibrant characters, Michaels's distinctive blend of humor and poignancy, and a suspenseful story line that holds readers engrossed until the Wnal page is turned, Late Bloomer takes readers on a young woman's journey of self-discovery that is at once exciting, heartbreaking, and ultimately triumphant. 1 out of 5 stars THE WORST DIALOGUE I've ever read!.......2007-09-12

I looked at the reviews before reading this book and I was surprised by the nearly equally divided opinions about it. It seems like people either loved or hated it. I was intrigued enough to check it out.

Whew! I am SO shocked that this ever made it into print! The basis for the plot isn't bad but the execution is terrible. The characterization is nearly non-existant and the characters act in ways that aren't consistent with previous acts & thoughts. In addition, the dialogue has to be THE worst dialogue I've ever read (and I've read a lot of books!).

I recommend passing on this book unless you're a die-hard Michaels fan and you want to be able to say that you've read everything by her. It's a real stinker.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2006-07-09

I'm at a loss as to how a book so poorly written could be so highly rated. Michaels makes the mistakes of a college (or even high school) creative writing student. Her sentence level writing as well as her scene and character development are so simplistic that I had to force myself to finish the book just to see why people recommended it. If you do not mind poor writing and unlikely leaps in the plotline, then perhaps you can enjoy the few positive elements of this book. If you are ever bothered by such things, then don't waste your time.

    2 out of 5 stars Oh...My...God!.......2006-07-07

Can't believe I actually finished this book. Could not find a single likeable character in the entire book, never mind realistic.
Even ended up disliking the female character thoroughly and sympathizing with the "bad guy". All that stuff about Cody being so sweet(yuck!)... Not my idea of a sweet girl, she's just so shallow and dumb! After reading the book, I wouldn't mind tossing a rock at her myself.

4 out of 5 stars Good for pre-teens and teenagers.......2005-05-01

Having seen a review of this book by someone who reviewed The Dead Angel, and also having had a friend read it and enjoy it, I read Late Bloomer. This was my first Fern Michaels book.

The story surrounds the attempt by thirtyish Cady Jordan to regain her memory of an accident that happened twenty years earlier. She was seriously injured (now recovered), but Jeff King, a bully who took delight is terrorizing Cady, died in the same accident. The two fell from a "zip line" (precipitated by some rock-throwing) that connected a tree with the ground beyond a pond over which the zip line traveler had to pass. Four other children (Andy and Amy Hollister, Pete Danson, and Boomer Ward) were there that day, but each ran away and never admitted their presence. The story is very predictable and includes a nasty little secret that turns out to be predictable, as well (it was even easy to predict with whom Cady would end up romantically).

Cady is eventually taken away from Indigo Valley by her parents. She returns at age thirty to supposedly aid her ailing, 82-year-old grandmother. The intrigue begins with her return. The book was entertaining enough, but at times I felt the author left out information the reader needed for continuity. She would fill the spaces a few pages later through the use of a dialog, but by then I'd been back-searching to find a proper connection, which was distracting. For comic relief, Cady's wacky, but loving grandmother is a former Hollywood movie star who shares her Indigo Valley mansion with a former stunt woman and a has-been director. The three of them manipulate and maneuver constantly in an attempt to help Cady solve her mystery and get a life.

I agree with another reviewer that this story would be good for young people to read and discuss. It might help them see how damage done by a lie and the accompanying secrecy (and more lies) that surrounds it, can eventually have dire consequences. The story is actually quite appropriate for teenagers on all levels. For these reasons I've given the book four stars.

    Carolyn Rowe Hill

4 out of 5 stars Read it for entertainment.......2005-04-23

Twenty years after an accident that changed her life, Cady Jordan returns to her home town where a nasty secret has been kept since the accident that seriously injured her and killed another child, thirteen-year-old bully Jeff King. Cady has not been able to remember the day's events and has spent twenty years living in its shadow.

While this basic storyline seems ominous, the book is actually more a romantic comedy than a dark mystery. Cady comes back to help her elderly grandmother, former movie star, Lola Jor Dan. Lola and her cohorts, Mandy and Anthony, her friends and so-called house staff, were once part of the Hollywood film scene. Lola went through six husbands and a host of paramours in her younger years and is quite the character. The antics of these three are quite amusing as they work to get Cady to remember the accident and get a life. Childhood friends, twins Andy and Amy Hollister (Chambers), Pete Danson, and Boomer Ward figure in this story and certainly into the day in Indigo Valley that the town still talks about. The book is a mix of humor, romance, intrigue, and even a tear or two.

As I read this book I was wondering, as I always do, about its appropriateness for young people. My conclusion: this is a good book for teenage boys and girls. While it may seem more appropriate for girls, I recommend it to boys as well. There are three men in this story who have some major soul-searching to do as to what kind of man each truly is. If I were a teacher, I'd have my high school students read it and discuss how seriously a lie told once, can grow into a monster over time and change your life forever. It's also a good lesson about how far some people will go out of fear of such a lie being exposed.

The book was easy to read. Some of the writing was a little iffy for me with some scenarios a little unlikely...not improbably, just unlikely. Overall, I enjoyed it.

    Book Description

Late Bloomers applauds seventy-five individuals whose greatest achievements occurred or were recognized later in their lives. The people profiled have come from different countries and diverse social backgrounds, yet all have one thing in common: They refused to give up their dreams just because they were no longer young, and thus managed to make the second half of their lives rich and fulfilling for themselves and for others.

In sparkling profiles written by veteran New Yorker contributor Brendan Gill, the stories of these resilient people unfold. Some, such as Raymond Kroc (the founder of McDonalds) and Harry Truman, changed careers relatively late in life. Others, such as botanist George Washington Carver, worked for years in their profession, finding recognition only later. Many of those profiled, including Julia Child and Gertrude Jekyll, didn't even begin producing their life's work until middle age.

At once timely and timeless, Late Bloomers is an inspiration for everyone who wants to believe that it's never too late.

    5 out of 5 stars inspirational.......2006-12-23

This book is really fun, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. The great thing about this book is that it isnt trying to be inspirational. It presents some very interesting people, and doesnt try to be more than a little book. I am going to order a few of new paperbacks. I know a lot of talented people who changed career directions after 40. I know a lot more people who have talent but dont trust it. I think people contemplating life or career change would find this book interesting.

    1 out of 5 stars Sad research.......1999-11-24

.....and flippancy made me glad I could see the book before almost buying it.

It was a dissapointment dispite the hopeful title. Really does a number on Mary Baker Eddy at a time when probably the best researched book on her life, by Gillian Gill, has just come out the last year and corrects many a falacy. This perpetuates bad scholarship and is simplistic about many a complicated life, for example Coco's unfortunate collaboration with Nazism during the war.

2 out of 5 stars Late Bloomers Need History Lesson.......1996-11-26

This is not a review, but a warning that early on, the book will lose its credibility. There is a profile of Harry Truman - one of the late bloomers. The author (I assume) has the years of Harry Trumans presidency wrong. Bad enough the book tilts to the literary/art crowd (guess all those failed authors are being hopeful), but no one at the publisher caught this. A problem for those publishing executives that only took english lit courses is that they have ignored the basic facts of history

This book is really a how-to manual on how to live the life you want to live. No mumbo-jumbo, just real, hands-on, instructions including fun(!!) "homework". If you read this book, and do the (painless, fun, entertaining) work, your life will improve. Period. Guaranteed.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I must say that Jerry hired me to edit this book. So I have read it carefully, and repeatedly. And, I am not particularly a fan of so called "self-improvement" or "new age" type products. Be that as it may ... I love this book! As advertised, it is not your normal self-help book. It is bouncy and funny and joyful, and as if that weren't reason enough to buy it, there is truth contained herein. Book Description

Carol Tyler has been a professional (and highly acclaimed) cartoonist for over 20 years, appearing in such venues as Robert Crumb's Weirdo, Wimmen's Comix, and Drawn & Quarterly magazine.

But over the years her status as a working mother has drastically curtailed her ability to set aside time for her cartooning. Thus each rare new story from her pen has been greeted with hurrahs—as well they should be, because she's one of the most skillful, caustic, and emphatic cartoon storytellers of her generation. This new book presents the biggest, richest and most delightful collection of Tyler's work to date featuring many new and previously unpublished works.

In "Migrant Mother" Tyler tells the grueling story of a cross-country trip with the flu and her terrible twos toddler using her trademark combination of rueful humor and emphathy. The full-color "Just A Bad Seed" is a meditation on a problem child who might not be such a problem after all, while "The Return of Mrs. Kite" chronicles a family crisis—how her widowed grandmother fell in with a beau of questionable character. "Gone" (also in full color) is a stirring meditation on all kinds of loss, and "Why I'm A-gin' Southern Men" is a classic rant that dissects that particular breed of male—or at least a certain subspecies of "ex"es—with pitiless wit.

Other stories include "Sweet Miss Lee" (a reminiscence of an immigrant roommate and her fate), "There's Something Wrong with a Perfect Lawn" (a tale of suburban obsessiveness), "Little Crosshatch Mind" (where artistic impulses come from), and "Uncovered Property" (discovering the power of sexuality at an early age).

Tyler works equally well in delicately crisp black-and-white penstrokes and lushly watercolored paintings (this book will feature 60 pages of her stunning full-color work). All told, the three-dozen stories here will cement Tyler's reputation as a cartoonist to be reckoned with. 136 pages, 60 pages in color.

You may see this book at a garage sale, but it won't be for sale. This book stays with me, over here by the cash box and the card table - you know, with the ice tea and the lawn chairs. I enjoy reading it while waitin' for customers. Another place you might find Late Bloomer is on the screen porch with the wicker. Or on the night stand next to the bed.

I love this book. I love reading it because it makes me laugh. I love reading it because it makes me cry. I love looking at it over and over because it's just so darn beautiful. I highly recommend it. Late Bloomer will end up being one of your favorite things in life.

I go to UNCW so I have had the pleasure of taking Professor Graham's class and hearing her stories first hand! I've read both of her books and can't get enough of them. Her writing style is beyond belief. If you pass up this book, you are passing up a world of amazement and humor. This should most def be on your wish list!

      5 out of 5 stars Late Bloomers: a Rose of a Book.......2001-05-29

I loved this book, from the title on. I don't know if the author intended a pun when she chose the word "bloomers," but I kept thinking about the early feminists who were called bloomers because they dared to wear trousers. This book is about revolutionaries, also, because it tells the true stories of women who dared to become themselves at an older age. The stories all revolve around a theme, of women who usually met a special woman after the age of 40, fell in love, and then had their world spin around. The author/editor sent a survey out to women across the USA, and these stories consist of the responses that she received back. The survey is included as an appendix to the book, and is an interesting read in itself. Try taking the survey together with your friends or your lover, like I did. It will open up some intersting conversations!

Buy this book, read this book, share this book. You will come to know and treasure the many women who are scattered throughout the pages, the women who were brave enough and foolhardy enough to follow their hearts.
