5 out of 5 stars Cloudy Jewel.......2001-07-10

Having read most of Grace Livingston Hill's books, I know that they are not all gems. This book, however, truly is one. The story is largely about the re-established relationship between the aunt and her college-aged niece and nephew, and how, through the loveliness of the aunt's character, her example and guidance, they come to know God. All the usual storyline elements are included. The aunt, who has been the silent suffering servant for most of her life, is rewarded with the love of the two (wealthy) children of her dead brother, to fill the place of the children she never had. Unkind relatives try unsuccessfully to thwart their plans. She and the niece and nephew find a house and make it into a beautiful home, in which many of their college friends enjoy spending time. Also, romance enters the picture for each of the main characters. A lovely, truly spiritual book that examines various Biblical issues.

5 out of 5 stars Four Stories.......2003-02-02

Collection 5 contains four stories. I consider this the best of the Collections I have read so far, and I've read most of them.

The Enchanted Barn by GHL is a story of an oldest daughter, Shirley Hollister, who finds herself supporting her ill mother and younger brothers and sisters after her father's death. She works as a poorly paid stenographer, and learns that they must vacate their tiny dark house in the city. She uses her last dime to ride a trolley into the country to find a home, and discovers a beautiful old stone barn in an idyllic setting, with a stream, fresh air, trees, and sunshine. The handsome young wealthy owner, Sidney Graham, agrees to rent it to her -- and then proceeds with some modifications. When the family moves to the country, the mother starts to recover and the children grow stronger. Young Shirley is asked to the city to work with some important governmental papers, and is kidnapped by evil men. Sidney Graham sets out to find her -- and you will have to read the story yourself to learn the ending. The story is pure fun, especially the part about fixing up the barn, and one of the best GHL has written.

The Love Gift by GHL is a story of young milliner living in a cheap boardinghouse, who can make beautiful hats. And of a poor young minister who goes in search of a respectable hat for his older mother. The two become friends after the beautiful poor young milliner sells him a beautiful hat for a very low price, and the minister shows her about Jesus. Do they fall in love? Read the story yourself to find out.

Miranda, by GHL is part of a sequence of stories that began with the book "Marcia Schuyler." It takes the story of Miranda Griscom and her own secret love, young Allan Whitney. Years ago, Allan had been wrongly accused of a crime and had fled out west, with only Miranda believing firmly in his innocence, and helping him to flee. When he returns to town years later after cleared of wrong-doing, will he remember his long-time faithful friend?

Agatha's Unknown Way is a story by Isabella Alden. Young Agatha Hunter grew up in India, and returns to the states to stay with her Aunt & Uncle for health reasons. While in the states, she attends a city missionary meeting, hoping to be inspired and encouraged and to be able to encourage her parents who are still in India. When she discovers only apathy, she is pushed beyond her usual shyness to help change things. A chance encounter and a mistaken identity change not only her life, but the lives of those around her.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of her best!!!.......2007-03-30

A Daily Rate was a great story. It is about a young, innocent girl who is struggling to make it on her own. She lives in a boarding house with various different characters. The girl comes into an inheritance, which changes her life and the life of a favorite aunt, who she sends to live with her. A Girl from Montana was a little too sugary-sweet for me, and somewhat hard to believe, but still a good read nonetheless. It is about a young girl who loses her family and travels across the country on horseback to find other relatives. Aunt Crete's Emancipation was okey-dokey. Still hard of sugary-sweet for me. I like A Daily Rate the best.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Authors!.......2006-04-06

I love all the books by both Grace Livingston Hill and Isabella Alden. Isabella Alden's books are especially thought provoking.Very uplifting to those trying to live a consecrated Christian life.

2 out of 5 stars Isabella Alden, Christian?.......2002-02-20

This seems to be a pathetic attempt at Anti-Mormon Literature, made worse as it is from a popular Christian writer who gave only one case and only one side of that case. To have re-printed it without an explaination of the true history of Polygamy is to hit the LDS Church again. Most reading this book will have never met a 'Mormon' and this will be all the exposure they get. Is that a Christian way of doing things. By the way, the LDS Church is the 5th largest religion in the USA and most of its members live outside of the USA. Very poor writing and re-printing. If you write anti-Mormon lit. at least be up front about it.

3 out of 5 stars 3 good books, 1 not-so-good book.......2000-10-27

I loved "Aunt Crete's Emancipation" and "A Daily Rate," both books containing mistreated aunts who still stayed "Christlike" throughout the story. "The Girl From Montana" is a similar plot to another Grace Livingston Hill book, "Ladybird," in that both books are about young girls who have lost their families in the mountains and go east to find relatives.

I agree 100% with the review created by another reader from Utah. I purchased this collection from Avon several months ago, and was very displeased with Isabella Alden's false information about Mormons - I received credit from Avon, but as they didn't want it back, I removed the slanderous Isabella Alden story and "blacked out" all references to it elsewhere on the cover. NOW it's a good book.

5 out of 5 stars A delightfully clean collection of religious romance.......1999-07-10

This book actually contains four different novels: 1-Aunt Crete's Emancipation covers to touching store of a young nephew who takes over the care of an elderly spinster aunt. The aunt unselfishly serves the whims of her sister and niece at the expense of her own happiness. The story is a wonderful example of how we should treat others how we would like to be treated. 2-A Daily Rate is the winsome story of a young girl who is trying to earn her way in the world. When she comes upon an unexpected inheritance she uses it to help guide the lives of those around her so that they might find some happiness. 3-The Girl From Montana seemed a little contrived but still entertaining. The girl in question comes from the rough and tumble of the West to the refinement of the East. There she learns that people have different perspectives on what is right and what is wrong. 4-Mara by Isabella Alden is the touching account of four friends and how their lives change after leaving college. One faces the death of her fiance and another faces the devastating lies of her beloved. The final part of this story details the reunion but under the sad circumstances of one of them who has been betrayed and tricked into marriage. Be aware that the last part of the book is racist in its views towards The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, often known as the Mormons for their belief in The Book of Mormon. The guy is a jerk and a slime but some of the religious references are not true and very slanderous in tone. The story started out so nicely and wound up like a vendetta against the mormon religion that was not based on fact. I would recommend that people find out the truth themselves from the Mormons.

5 out of 5 stars One of her best.......1999-02-25

If you are Grace Livingston Hill fan, be sure to read this book. Constance is a more complex heroine than most, and her conflicts and soul searching give this novel its special depth. Her spiritual wrestling is handled with sensitivity and honesty. The other characters are genuine and appealing. This is a moving and compelling book.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and moving.......1998-03-18

A wonderful book, gentle and spiritual. Constance slowly realizes her shallowness after she "unites with the church" just to get her grandmother's valuable pearl necklace. The stranger she meets at the church service ends up helping her through tragic circumstances and personal trials. A great ending too!

    Book Description

The good folk of Centerville were scandalized! Mrs. Fenton, a simple housewife, was having gatherings in her parlor, where she had the gall to mix idle, uneducated folk with members of the well-educated upper class. There, along with a law student and an eminent professor, sat a housemaid and the cigar-smoking, good-for-nothing Ward boys and their equally idle companion Paul! The reason for their monthly gatherings? To form Centerville's own chapter of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Society! Convinced this was a foolish enterprise, the townspeople made no secret of their distaste that such a ludicrous mix of people would gather to study ancient Rome, theology . . . and the Bible.

Then, beyond anyone's wildest imaginings, miracles began to happen.

Heartwarming stories of faith and love by Grace Livingston Hill's aunt--Isabella Alden. Each book is similar in style and tone to Hill's and is set in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

I love Grace Livingston Hill stories, and was disappointed to learn that the books in this series have been edited! (I believe the term used is "updated for modern audiences.") After purchasing many Grace Livinigston Hill books, I strongly prefer Tyndale House editions over these collections. Not only do they claim to retain all original text, but the Tyndale House books seem to be printed on higher quality paper.

    5 out of 5 stars Homing.......2006-08-20

This is the last book in a series of books called the Williamsburg novels. I have been reading and re-reading this series of 7 books for over 50 years. They are my all time favorite books. Each book deals with a war or pre-war action (except the war of 1812) in which the US has taken part from the Revolutionary War (Dawn's Early Light) to the Civil War (Yankee Stranger) to the Homing with is the last of the series and the 4th book which deals with WWI and WWII and the years in between. They are a great source of history. Ms Thane (widow of the explorer Dr. William Beebe) has done an excellent job of research for each of the books. I hope others find them as wonderful, and as entertaining as I do. I have read my old copies until they are falling apart. I was very excited to find they had been reprinted and purchased them immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Always an excellent read.......2003-10-23

I first found these books in the school library in the 1950's & I enjoy them more with each year. They give a true and accurate description of family life in the South through the years. I had thought about them for years and every once in a while would run into a copy at a book sale. A couple of years ago when I was out of work, I used some of my dwindling funds to buy copies of the last 2 books...and I have never regretted it.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful story, end of great series.......2001-09-26

I read this book in the 60's, and loved it deeply then. It has held up well. I'd be hard pressed to say whether I like this book or _Dawn's Early Light_ (the first story in the series) best. It is probably best appreciated after reading the first book in the series. They form the bookends of a wonderful series about several intertwined families on both sides of the Atlantic from the American Revolution through World War II. The editions I read as a kid had family trees on the endpapers, and they were a great help.
_Homing_ recounts the story of Mab, a young girl, and her extended family, through the beginning of WW II. Although I am not a historian, I have not ever encountered a historical event in one of Ms. Thane's books that was contradicted by any history I have read. She makes history immediate and real by showing how characters you care about are affected by historical events. The history is background to the story; although it contributes significantly to the plot, I never felt I was being lectured. Characterizations ring true; I came to care deeply about the people in the story. There are ways in which this book, and the whole series, remind me of the books of Rosamunde Pilcher - the are populated by people I'd like to meet, coping with their lives.

5 out of 5 stars a pleasant read for women of all ages, 18 to 80........1999-01-30

The last of the Williamsburg Series, Homing brings you full circle back to the past. The best way to read this book is after you have read the others, beginning with "Dawn's Early Light". I first read them when I was a teenager and I still read them every couple of years. The characters are like family or maybe the way we would like family to be.

5 out of 5 stars A satisfying conclusion to the story of an extended family........1998-04-25

This is the conclusion to the Williamsburg Novels that begins with Dawn's Early Light. The characters continue to ring true and the historical view of both England and the US during the early days of WWII is great. The story truly comes full circle and makes you want to read them all again.

Yes, I am a 'dyed in the wool' GLH fan, but I am the first to admit some of her books are not on my "WOW" list! But this one definitely is. What this dear family goes through is very trying to say the least but of course, everything will come out wonderful in the end. This is one of her best, in my opinion - I guess I've read it several times -- I own almost every one of her books. You will not regret purchasing this one , it is a must read ...... I only wish Hollywood would grow a brain and start making movies out of her stuff!!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2005-08-17

This too had the theme of God taking adversity and using it for good in our lives. It was a skillfully woven tale with lots of interesting characters that added a lot of dimension to the book. The father dies suddenly, the bank fails and an unscrupulous lawyer threatens to take their home. As a result of all those calamites the Mother decides they should move onto this other property they own but it is in a very bad part of town. I enjoyed meeting all the neighbors--the seven little orphan boys particularly. I also liked Bat as Ms. Hill developed his character and showed him unscrupulous but then hungering for a life he has never seen before or known.

    4 out of 5 stars April Gold.......2000-04-05

I checked this book out of the library to read and liked it so much I have to get my own copy! What made this book one I want to keep was the quality of the family relationships and friendships described by the author. Even though the main characters were going through a really difficult time in their lives, they didn't become bitter or mean spirited. Their faith in Christ grew as they worked through their struggles. It motivated me to improve the quality of my relationships and not give myself the excuse that "I'm having a hard time of things right now & I'll be better once I get over this crisis."

Yes it was written almost 65 years ago, but the less modern style works to its advantage in my opinion. Some may argue that no one is as positive & even happy in the face of adversity as Mrs. Hill portrays, but I have personally seen some comparable 'real life' examples around me and say "why not try!" We all have a choice as to how we respond to life's hard knocks and it's refreshing to have a model of a positive response!

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story!.......1999-03-18

This is an excellent book. When the father of the family gets sick and must go into the hospital, the family becomes poorer and poorer. Slowly the family comes closer to faith in God. This book helps you understand some of the trials people go through when they don't know God.

    5 out of 5 stars Brentwood.......2007-02-08

I have been reading the customer reviews on Grace L. Hill books. Something I've noticed as a recurring theme is that they are declared too simple and unrealistic, the main characters too perfect.
I don't think Ms. Hill was trying to show us at our worst on our worst day. I think she was novelizing a Sunday school lesson more or less. I think she was saying when you are faced with a truly horrible person, rise above that person's level and act in a way you can be proud of later. Haven't you ever been in the middle of reading one of her books or just done with one of them, and still had the character fresh in your mind, and you were faced with a situation where you had to choose between acting ugly and taking the high road? Didn't the memory of that character help you shoot for better behavior?
I read somewhere that her heroes are too good that it gives women an unrealistic view of men and then they become unsatisfied with their husbands. I think it tells single women pick the best guy out of the litter and don't settle for the worst and hope he changes.

5 out of 5 stars Adopted girl finds birth parents.......2003-12-04

After her adopted parents die, wealthy Marjorie searches out her destitute birth parents and siblings. The story involves why she had been adopted, romance, conversion testimonies, as well as health and wealth issues, and much suspicion from a twin sister. Brentwood is the name of the home they had in more plentiful times that represents the successful concluding reunion of this almost destroyed family.

    5 out of 5 stars Implausible, Old-Fashioned, Great!.......2000-03-21

What a quaint, old-fashioned story! The plot is impossible, but the characters are endearing, and the message of faith is valuable. It was a favorite of mine as a child, because it reminds me a bit of Frances Hodgson Burnett's A Little Princess! It isn't a children's book, but there are plenty of children in it! Wholesome.
