Book Description

"This collaboration--posthumous in McAlmon's case--has proved amazingly successful. It gives us pictures of two lives--and many surrounding lives--from different angles, as if they had been taken with a stereoscopic camera. Thereby it gives us an impression of depth and substantiality that have been lacking in other memoirs of Paris in the 1920's." -- Malcolm Cowley, New York Times Book Review

There was no more exhilarating decade in the history of modern letters than the twenties in Paris. They were all there: Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, Gertude Stein, James Joyce, John Dos Passos, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mina Loy, T. S. Eliot, Djuna Barnes, Ford Madox Ford, Katherine Mansfield, Alice B. Toklas... and with them were Robert McAlmon and Kay Boyle.

Their collaborative memoir began as a book written by McAlmon in 1934. In the late 1960s, Kay Boyle revised and edited the book, adding alternating chapters of her own. The result is a marvelous chronicle of the period as seen through two sets of perceptive eyes. As both writers tell wonderful anecdotes--of Joyce on his evening binges, of Stein holding court, of Hemingway at his most vicious--they beautifully evoke 1920s Paris in this sad, funny, informative, and nostalgic memoir.

"On his side of the dual autobiography (an interesting device which works very well here) McAlmon tells fascinating stories... and he is always honestly direct. You like the man and you like the book... On the other side, Kay Boyle is a delightful writer with a style that can be dazzling, yet strong as steel... It is Miss Boyle who gives us the airy magic of Camelot-Paris simply by telling us the story of her hopelessly romantic life." -- Mario Puzo

5 out of 5 stars Eagles Without a Cliff.......2003-04-27

This is a strangely, piercingly affecting book ostensibly by and about two largely forgotten writers among the "Lost Generation" of writers and artists in Paris in the 1920's. It is an emotionally engrossing tale, especially on Boyle's part, of what physical and emotional/spiritual sacrifices the life of the committed artist demands.-----Yes, there is plenty of name-dropping and stories concerning Pound, Joyce and Hemingway-But that hardly seems the point and neither does their art (except for Boyle, at times). This book is about what sort of People they were, how they lived their lives, both internally and externally.

The stereotype of the artist as a self-destructive martyr to his or her art is certainly on display here, but the characters aren't represented as hollow stereotypes (which themselves exist, after all, for very good reasons). They leap from the page as living, breathing people, and one gains an insight into the modus vivendi of each of them. And it must be said that, of the writers from that milieu that are still remembered today (mentioned above), only Joyce comes through as a lovable figure, and a good man, despite his drinking bouts.

The major achievement of this book is that it brings home the humanity of both Boyle and McAlmon as they lived their externally festive (especially McAlmon's), inwardly tormented (especially Boyle's) lives. There are several other aspects on which one could dwell, Mcalmon's generosity and relative selflessness (as written of by Boyle, not he), Boyle's supposedly more "Romantic" way of life and art (as written of by McAlmon, not she), but the main effect is that of laying out a physical and psychological tableau of their lives in the 1920's.-As McAlmon confesses, "It is a horrible admission, but some of us are driven to work at times to forget about living life. That creative urge, if you will, or is it that something remembered or contemplated is more entertaining than the actual scene and event being experienced? Somebody else spoke of Marsden as an 'eagle without a cliff', but aren't we all?"-Later he writes, "...we had moments of enjoying the sodden destruction of time in a weary world."---

As we look back on this supposedly "dated" attitude of those expatriate writers, can we really say that their actions and outlook were so dated? What artist or what person has not had thoughts or periods of life such as expressed above?---At one point in the book, McAlmon reports a fellow reveller at a Parisian cafe chiding him for his well-known generosity and telling him that he has "too much humanity." This is the only criticism that can be levelled at this book, if you choose to categorize it as such.

3 out of 5 stars A book for specialists.......2000-11-01

If you have read extensively about the Lost Generation and their Paris, then the McAlmon chapters will further illuminate what others have said. If you are fairly new to the subject, this book will bore you to tears with its laundry lists of who/what/where/exactly when and at what time so-and-so got drunk. I do not think Kay Boyle's chapters do anything but prove how odious she was.

5 out of 5 stars Memoirs of Paris.......2000-07-12

This is an evocative memoir -- much more substantive than many books exploring the lives of expats in Paris in the 20s & 30s.

Book Description

A thorough introduction to a unique and often overlooked method of fly fishing

How to tie and use dapping flies: stoneflies, dragonflies, craneflies, grass shrimp, minnows, Catskill flies, and Irish and Scottish flies

Photos, recipes, and step-by-step instructions for tying the flies

Proclaimed as the easiest way to fly-fish--the wind carries the blowline, which carries the fly to the fish--dapping is all but unknown in North America, yet it is extraordinarily popular in Ireland and Scotland. The dapper uses the wind, even a breeze, to carry the blowline that carries a fly that flies, quivers, and jumps exactly like the living insect. And dapping drives trout, bass, salmon, and other gamefish wild with desire.

In this first and only book published in the United States exclusively on the subject of dapping, Robert Boyle examines this unusual but highly effective technique, giving details on how to rig and fish a dapping rod equipped with the proper reel, backing, blowline, and short leader. He describes the proven flies to use, along with the materials needed and the tying procedures.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-10-01

Delightful!
Dapping The Exciting Way of Fishing Flies that Fly, Quiver and Jump by Author Robert H. Boyle is an absolutely delightful must read for any fly-fishing enthusiast.
Advised of the book by a staunch environmentalist friend of mine who had followed the career, campaign and accomplishments of the engaging Mr. Boyle, I found myself lost in a world of purist pursuit of the singularly satisfying task of catching dinner!
Boyle takes the reader through a light, yet, engaging history of the sport of dapping recognizing its near demise and resurrection with purists around the world; a quiet revolution to actually return to sport.
As a marginally adept fisher-person myself, having long ago given up the sport enjoyed with my grandfather in ideal fishing spots throughout the Hudson Valley, I find myself longing to return.
Only a true sportsman could elicit this level of excitement. I'm off to the hardware store to purchase a vise, black thread and some Krazy glue. You should be off to the bookstore to purchase this "keeper" as a gift for any fisherman in your midst!

5 out of 5 stars Interesting subject and a great read.......2007-03-16

"Dapping" is the most original and interesting book on fly-fishing in many years. Dapping is arguably the purest form of dry-fly fishing, but if you read Boyle's book - and I highly recommend that you do - be prepared to see most of your cherished fly-fishing conventions turned on their heads. You'll be instructed to use a very long rod (15 feet is mid-range), a spinning reel and a "blowline" with a short leader, which swings with the lightest breeze so that your fly "gently alights, sits with feathers and fibers twitching, tantalizingly dances and prances its way across the surface, and if no strike results, takes to their air where it seductively hovers before landing again to start the cycle anew," in the author's words. Boyle treats the reader to an utterly fascinating history of dapping going back to ancient Macedonia, rich with quotes from hundreds of years' worth of angling literature. The unorthodox (to Americans) fly patterns in the book are a refreshing change from the standard litany of patterns found in most fly-fishing how-to books. "Dapping" is a witty, elegant and meticulously researched book, and I believe most fly-fishermen will enjoy it very much. I know I did.

P.S. - Boyle's bio on the Amazon page is far too modest. He is a highly influential environmentalist -- the founder of Riverkeeper, an important conservation organization with a track record of success, and the author of "The Hudson River: A Natural and Unnatural History" and "Acid rain," among many other books. And his writing is exquisite.

1 out of 5 stars I'd rather fly a kite........2007-02-10

Most serious fly fishermen over the age of 40 have heard of dapping. Indeed, most of us when attempting to fish a dry fly in heavy winds, have perforce used the technique. But now Robert Boyle, attempts to resurrect this cumbersome method developed for and primarily used on the lakes and reservoirs of Europe.

The method, as championed by Boyle borders on the ridiculous - using a 20 foot "pole," a spinning reel, stout monofilament line, a "blowline" of either dental floss or "Bob Church's blowline" from England, and a short conventional leader. (Using monofilament, by the way, even on a fly reel, is prohibited on "fly fishing only " waters in my state.)

All the pictures in this book, excepting those of flies, are of Boyle himself, five of them, each showing Boyle standing soldierly on the edge of a pond holding his enormous pole. The same cap and jacket, holding the same rod, all seemingly snapped at the same pond on the same day. No pictures of fish. No diagrams of the rig, no instruction on how one lands a fish caught at the end of such a contraption. And the pictures of Boyle's own flies show remarkably crude, complicated, hard-bodied affairs gunked up with Krazy glue, cork, goose quills, scissored credit card pieces (Has Boyle not heard of crease flies and sheets of cell foam?) and Sally Hansen nail polish. The other pictures of flies and tying recipes are interesting - mostly Irish and Scottish "spider"-type flies. But returning to the ridiculous, there's a picture of Harry's Hippity Hop Bird, a hookless dapping fly as big as your fist. What's more, there are two erudite chapters on the virtues of Dragon flies and Crane flies complete with intricate tying directions. (Excuse me, how many times have you seen a trout take either?)

I would suggest that if casting in the wind is a big problem for you, go buy a book on casting techniques instead of Boyle's immodest disquietation on dapping. Or, if you are just bored with conventional fly fishing, go fly a kite.

"CORPORATE DOWNLOAD focuses on the ten most important characters in the SHADOWRUN universe - the AAA megacorporations that dictate what happens in the shadows and the world at large. The year is 2061, and the dust is settling on a corporate war in which one of the mightiest megacorporations fell. In the aftershocks, three new megacorps rose to prominence, each taking a different path to the top and showing the other megas that they do not have the market cornered on deception and power."
    - from the Introduction

    Meant for use with:
SHADOWRUN, 3rd edition and the revised SHADOWRUN COMPANION
    RIGGER 2
    VIRTUAL REALITIES 2.0
    CRITTERS
    MAGIC IN THE SHADOWS

Plot-wise, CORPORATE DOWNLOAD describes the corporate world as it is after the death of Dunkelzahn (which indirectly triggered the corporate war) and after Deus' takeover of the Renraku Arcology in Seattle, so it is effectively a sequel to PORTFOLIO OF A DRAGON and to RENRAKU ARCOLOGY: SHUTDOWN.

Typically of the best of the Shadowrun sourcebooks, this volume is organized as an electronic document from Shadowland, the (fictional) central clearinghouse for shadowrunner information in the Shadowrun world. As in the real world, of course, information is compiled by characters having their own agendas, which may include the spread of disinformation, so gamemasters are free to decide whether the truth is out there and what it is.

Captain Chaos begins by turning over center stage to two shadowrunners who in parallel provide two quick and dirty tutorials about the facts of life. The Chromed Accountant in "Taking Care of Business" outlines the basic knowledge needed to understand the megacorps: the definitions of "corporation", "multinational corporation", and "megacorporation", and what the AAA rating system actually tells you about a megacorporation. Alongside this explanation of what the corps are lies Wobbly's "They Got the Whole World in Their Hands", which discusses the power of the megacorps: how it evolved and how they maintain it.

The next section, before discussion of the individual megacorps begins, covers "The Corporate Court". The Big 10 megacorps - the 10 biggest multinationals, who between them control more resources than all the other corporations on Earth put together - comprise the Corporate Court, which not only settles inter-corporate disputes but determines a corporation's status in the A - AAA rating system; that is, the Corporate Court decides whether a corporation has extraterritoriality, whether it can act as a law unto itself.

After a final bit of initial tutorial material, "Surviving the Corporations", each individual member of the Big 10 has its own chapter, ranked in alphabetical order. Several entries begin with a little corporate history lesson before moving on to discuss the corporation's internal organization (e.g. primary divisions or businesses) and the major power players, such as Lofwyr's inner circle in the case of Saeder-Krupp.

All of the above is marked up with running commentary by Shadowland's shadowrunner visitors, expanding on areas of their own expertise and debunking items they disagree with. Lots of adventure seeds here, though no pre-packaged scenarios; shadowrunners often give examples. The main article on Yamatetsu, for instance, describes their corporate policy of no shadowruns not sanctioned by upper management, to prevent pointy-haired middle managers from messing up situations they don't understand. (The policy came about because a mid-level exec arranged for the murder of a Shiawase employee who'd been making trouble for Yamatetsu - who turned out to be a Yamatetsu deep-cover agent luring Shiawase into trusting him, unbeknownst to the middle-management Yamatetsu weenie who tried to take him out.) In real life, this means that runs arranged for a mid-level exec's personal gain involve dodging Yamatetsu's own security.

    Very good read.

"Though AA corps have frequent dealings with the Corporate Court and accounts with the Zurich-Orbital Bank, they have no official presence on the Court proper. Despite their power, they remain as much at the Court's mercy as the smallest corps. Each and every one would kill their mothers to get on the Court."
    - the Chromed Accountant

4 out of 5 stars very useful in games where the corps play big.......1999-11-08

I liked the book overall, and found that a lot of background info was given to help anyone who cared learn about the big 10. The mega-corps are all very well-detailed, and some of the info has mucho potential as GM material and story hooks. However, I thought that the game info section with the rules could have been a bit better, such as maybe including general pay scale for certain types of shadowruns. But that's just me. Overall, the book rocked. Get it if the Big 10 interest you at all, and especially if you're a GM planning on some corporate espionage!

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks.......1999-09-07

this is a great book if you feel like running a game where the corps have a greater presence and intrical part in the story. also good for a history on the corps.

Another excellent source for information on the Awakened World. A much needed update on the corporate struggles that plague the UCAS, CAS, and anywhere else that holds any value. Valuable info on new corps, such as Novatech. A good accessory to help sort out the chaos of the Fuchi collapse.

4 out of 5 stars Influential milestone in raising awareness of HV ecology........2000-04-13

In the early chapters Boyle paints an idyllic picture of aprimeval forest paradise with sparse native population that livedmainly off the land and needed to engage in limited amount of agriculture. The arrival of the Europeans spelled immediate eruption of violence. Not that there was none among the native tribes.... Boyle continues with a twenty page historical sketch of the HV during the 400 years and the Valley's ecology was affected. After these two chapters he proceeds to describe each stretch of the Hudson starting with the Adirondack region along with the beauty and problems each area. At this point it becomes apparent that Boyle's main interest is fish because of good half of the book is devoted to angling and description of fish. This is somewhat puzzling in this edition in view of the preface that he wrote in 1979, ten years after the first publication of the book that (he) does not "eat any waterfowls taken from the Hudson River south of Hudson Falls because of likely contamination by PCB's or other chemicals." That part is explained in the Epilogue, 1968-1978. The amount of attention devoted to fishing and the warning in the end makes the book seem irrelevant or else a historical curiosity. In addition to the fishing lore which is at times interesting and informative--there are pages devoted to a single species, sturgeon, for example, including a recipe for making caviar, or bass, there is wrangling with industrial polluters, Con Edison, governments, State, Federal, Local who are always in cohoots with those they were to watch. There is the Storm King Mountain fiasco though the first edition of the book came out before that blew over.

4 out of 5 stars This book gives a deep history of the Hudson River struggle........1999-04-28

Boyle's The Hudson River gives the amazing story of the Hudson River. Just about every species of animal life (fish, insects, and birds) from the rivers' origin to its mouth are disgussed. The Storm King plant and ConEd struggle surfaces. A chapter is devoted to a local fisherman who knows more about the river than anyone else. It is too bad that this classic is out of print, for I suggest that any ecologist at heart should own a copy. (My copy was "borrowed" from my teacher, and shall return home come the end of school.) Even if you do not live in New York State, or have no plans to ever go there, this book is an ecologist's dream. Not to put any other rivers down, but the Hudson River has the most incredible history around. If you can actually find this now-rare book I strongly urge you to buy it.

            Book Description

The first major collection of Boyle’s writings to be published since Thomas Birch’s eighteenth-century edition of his works presents material hitherto available only in the archives of the Royal Society.

This edition of Boyle’s Aretology (the study of moral virtue) and other moral essays from the late 1640s offers the intellectual and religious origins of Boyle’s most vital themes. John T. Harwood also includes two essays on moral topics, "Of Sin" and "Of Piety"; a sample of Boyle’s private meditations, "Joseph’s Mistress"; a short essay, "Of Time and Idleness"; and two guides to private meditation, "The Dayly Reflection" and "Of Thoughts." Harwood concludes the volume with a previously unpublished account of about seven hundred books in Boyle’s library at the time of his death.
