Book Description

The “top journalist in America and the funniest” (Randi Rhodes, Air America), takes his previous New York Times bestseller a step further with hot undercover dispatches— hanging out the dirty underpants of the “armed and dangerous clowns that rule us.”

A White House spokesman said, “We hate that sonovabitch.” They're not alone: From corporate suites to Osama's cave, they fear what Britain's Guardian calls “investigations up there with Woodward and Bernstein—and a lot funnier.” But Greg Palast's fanatic following (nearly two million readers of his Web column) has made him “a cult fave among progressives” (Village Voice) who can't wait for his next release.

Palast's old-style gum-shoe detective work to dig out the info on the War on Terror, greed- dripping schemes to seize little nations with lots of oil, the hidden program to steal the 2008 election, and the media biases that keep it unreported are the meat and bones of this BBC television reporter's new book. Armed Madhouse is illustrated with dozens of documents marked “secret” and “confidential” that have walked out of file cabinets and fallen into Palast's hands.

You won't find Palast in The New York Times (except its bestseller list), but you will read his reports on the hottest Web sites worldwide, hear him regularly on Air America and the Pacifica radio networks, and see his stories reappearing as the basis for Eminem's hit video “Mosh,” Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, and sampled by a dozen of today's top platinum rock artists. BACKCOVER: “The greatest investigative journalist in America.”

a must read for every american and anyone who knows one or ever wants to! ha. ha.

3 out of 5 stars Read the book, avoid the audio version.......2007-10-10

The material presented seems to be meticulously researched, and clearly and systematically presented. The problem is -on the audio CD edition- the sarcasm with which the lines are spoken. The sneering, cloying sarcasm is so intense, so pervasive, and so grating that it detracts from the narrative. Is it really necessary to emulate Anne Coulter's style?

5 out of 5 stars The truth exponentially!.......2007-10-05

Greg Palast is the modern day Thomas Paine. Believe me when I say that that is not overstatement. This is the book that got a man tazed by his vociferous opining over one single chapter - in fact, the very chapter that is what makes this book so important to understanding the hijacking of an entire country and its Constitution by the Bush crime machine.

The very fact that Palast has to go to another country to speak his truth tells you that we are in serious danger of losing the fourth estate altogether if we don't pay attention and do something about it.

I heard Palast on progressive radio and started my quest for the facts by reading his online pieces, and then buying this book. I only wish more Americans had listened much earlier and perhaps we could have avoided the fiasco that began with the hanging chad fiasco of 2001 when the Supreme Court appointed King George. That horrific event began the decent into constitutional chaos and the monumental abyss of lies, torture, rendering, the attack on human rights in our country and more.

I am so glad there is a Greg Palast. Just as glad as Bush cronies hate everything this man represents. "Armed Madhouse" is a welcome addition to my reference library and historic archives. Read and become enlightened!

4 out of 5 stars Hostile Takeover.......2007-10-04

Greg Palast's Armed Madhouse documents the thesis of CW Mills' seminal 1956 book The Power Elite - that US politics is just a facade: A facade for a hostile corporate takeover of both governments and nations. Palast asserts and documents that the "war on terror" was conceived as an attempt to destroy OPEC, further impoverish the US middle class, and reap windfall corporate profits from rebuilding Iraq, whose "no-bid", cash cow rebuilding Palast calls "the biggest reconstruction project since the pyramids" [page 277]. Palast humorously remarks in passing that "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was originally dubbed Operation Iraqi Liberation ("O.I.L.") by White House spokesman Ari Fleischer.

"Conspiracy nuts think George Bush, from the moment he took office, had a secret plan to control Iraq's oil. They're wrong. Bush had two plans. Here they are: One crafted by the neoconservatives at the Pentagon, another fashioned by the State Department and Big Oil. This is the history of the secret cold war between these two power elites, which drives the hot war on the Tigris" [page 51].

"[This book] is about how they are taking these American rights away, stripping them off you one by one, from the Wage and Hour Law's 40-hour week to the Clayton Antitrust Law to the False Claims Act to the laws that keep your lights on and your pensions protected. Many are laws that you've probably never heard of, like the Public Utility Holding Company Act. But, take my word for it, you'll miss them when they're gone" [page 284].

Outstanding book.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Informative, Disturbingly Insightful.......2007-10-01

Palast uncovers advanced economic plots to make the rich richer and the poor their servants. First he discusses the oil economy as it relates to big businesses and the political systems of those countries in power. Although there are those who completely dispel Palast's notion that oil is in seemingly infinite supply (and I don't mean right-wingers, either... do a google), I don't think if Palast is wrong on this count that it destroys his theories on how the oil industry operates and prospers. Other keep-the-rich rich schemes include the stealing of elections, something I've already studied and yet, was completely horrified to learn further extent to this phenomenon. Other notable topics include China, our lack-luster education system, and how the working class is held down. Well worth the listen, but have your brain turned on and focused. You can't be day dreaming and get what the author is saying because there are a lot of details given and he talks rather quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic look at the candidates and fund raising. .......2004-10-20

This book contains enough history about each candidate to make anyone feel confident with their vote. And, unlike almost any other political book I've read, it is suprisingly non-partisan. Furthermore, it really opens you eyes on the political fund raising system and what the candidates actually have to do before the become president.

After reading this book, it will become much easier to see through the candidates rhetoric, and this book or one like it should be a pre-requisite before voting.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST read for every voter!.......2004-04-22

This book is THE benchmark for investigative journalism done by the people at www.publicintegrity.org. An honest, fair and balanced presentation of the facts surrounding the Democratic candidates for President 2004 (which has since been whitled down to Kerry) and President Gearge W. Bush. You simply cannot say you are an informed voter until you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Americans really are ignorant.......2004-03-30

Let me start by saying I do not want George W. Bush re-elected, and I don't have any interest in John Kerry running the White House for the next four years either. I left myself open to have my opinions on American government influenced by this book, but I could never have imagined the magnitude in which this book changed my beliefs of our political process. It's no secret to anyone that money rules each and every major player in our political system. But what this book does is demonstrate just how out of control it's gotten. Author Charles Lewis uses indisputable facts and figures to show the shortcomings each of this year's presidential candidates, especially each candidate's willingness to let money and particular groups dictate the policy he feels is best suited to run the country. He hammers Bush in a bad way, but nothing he says can be considered untrue. Lewis uses the Freedom of Information Act to compile a body of evidence that implicates Bush in a dozen shady financial undertakings and also describes the way in which many of Bush's closest advisers landed high-level positions in government. You simply cannot fathom the number of Bush's advisers who were once employees or board members in companies (pharmaceutical, energy, law firms, etc.) that make up Bush's chief campaign donors. That is, at least until you read this book and Lewis starts listing them one after another. Lewis and the Center of Public Integrity maintained their own integrity by taking a completely non-partisan approach to this book, unafraid to tackle Bush and Democratic challengers alike. I cannot wait until 2008 to see what Lewis uncovers next. Hopefully, Bush and his cronies (or Kerry, for that matter) won't further gut our rights as Americans and refuse us the right to read it -- and Lewis' right to write it.

5 out of 5 stars The president is bought and sold!.......2004-03-28

A disturbing book.

It is a terrible thing to contemplate what money has done to prostitute the American political process. People don't support candidates to do better for the country. They're buying influence and -- if you don't pay, you can't play.

The saddest thing is to look at these obscene expenditures on campaigns and consider what some of that money could do in a good way. And then to consider what more all the money that will be stolen as a result could do on top of that.

5 out of 5 stars Strongly reccomended.......2004-03-25

This is a must read. I found it to be fair and factual.

From the introduction on, it's clear that the multiple authors of this book are attempting to do for former Vermont governor Howard Dean what political columnist Molly Ivins did for George W. Bush in her pre-2000 election book, Shrub: to examine the private life and public record of a high-profile presidential candidate for clues as to how he might perform if elected. Like Bush, Dean comes from a privileged background: He grew up on New York's Park Avenue, the son of a successful Wall Street stockbroker, and graduated from Yale University. From there, however, the two men's lives and interests diverged. After a brief, unhappy stint on Wall Street, Dean left the business world for a career in medicine. After medical school in the Bronx, he and wife/fellow physician Judith Steinberg moved to Burlington, Vermont, where they set up a family practice together. Dean entered state legislative politics in the early 1980s, and this book does a thorough job of covering his rise to governor in 1991, as well as many of the major issues he faced in nearly 12 years in the job.

Voters who think of Dean primarily as an anti-war progressive may be dismayed to discover that he's actually a very pragmatic, moderate Democrat. He's a fiscal conservative who sided as often with businessmen as he did with environmentalists. And, true to Vermont's quirky political orthodoxy, he favors gay rights (with significant qualifications, it turns out) but is opposed to a national gun control bill. The most valuable chapter by far is the final one, "What Kind of President?" in which Dean's positions are concisely laid out on a variety of issues: taxes, education, health care, labor unions, and foreign policy. Ultimately, Dean is presented as an unlikely mix of Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower--not exactly a catnip combination for progressives, nor the unelectable leftist that he's sometimes painted to be by his detractors.

Although a worthy book, Howard Dean: A Citizen's Guide suffers from having too many authors--nine of them, mostly Vermont daily newspaper reporters--and too little authorial voice. Unlike Ivins' examination of Bush, this volume doesn't crackle with wit or speed ahead on interpretive energy. Still, it's a solid examination of a seemingly decent man who is likely to be the Democratic candidate and a credible contender to Bush in the 2004 presidential election. --Keith Moerer

Book Description

No one knows a presidential candidate like the home state reporters who cover him or her, day in and day out. That's what makes this book about Howard Dean so useful: it goes a long way toward explaining the who, what and why of a man who, until a few months ago, was the widely dismissed former Governor of a small state, but now is a real contender for the White House.” -- Judy Woodruff
Anchor Of CNN’s Inside Politics: An In-Depth Look At Howard Dean

LESS THAN A YEAR ago, Howard Dean was the most obscure candidate in a crowded field of aspirants for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States. Today he is widely regarded as the one to beat. Who is this man who came from out of nowhere and how did he move so quickly to the front of the pack? Dean first burst onto the national stage at the Democratic National Committee’s 2003 winter meeting. In the 2002 mid-term elections, Democratic leaders had calculated that if they supported a slightly smaller tax cut and a slightly larger prescription drug benefit, and showed slightly less eagerness to go to war in Iraq than President Bush, they could keep control of the Senate and win back the House of Representatives. That approach didn’t work. A few months later the former governor of Vermont strode to the podium at the DNC’s worried winter gathering and blurted out, “What I want to know is why so many Democrats in Washington aren’t standing up against Bush’s unilateral war in Iraq. My name is Howard Dean, and I represent the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.” The effect was electric. Dean had seized the moment, and he has followed it up with aggressive campaigning and a record-setting fund-raising effort.

Howard Dean:A Citizen’s Guide to the Man Who Would Be President sets out to answer “Who is Howard Dean?” What do his life experiences and, maybe more importantly, his performance as Vermont’s governor for nearly twelve years, tell us about what he believes, how he operates, his strengths and weaknesses as a chief executive and on the campaign trail, and what kind of a president he might be? And what do those who know him and have worked for and against him really think?

Energetically reported by nine journalists whose experiences range from the Vermont statehouse to past presidential campaigns, Howard Dean: A Citizen’s Guide to the Man Who Would Be President is filled with fresh, often surprising information and keen new insights. Separate chapters cover Dean’s boyhood and college years, his time as a family doctor and citizen legislator, his record on the environment, health care, and budgets, and his campaign’s revolutionary use of the Internet as a grass-roots organizing tool. For readers looking to determine whether Dean can go the distance and how to cast their votes in 2004, this book is indispensable.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars ...I'll agree with my friends on this one.......2004-03-28

After reading Howard Dean's political biography, I decided to read this book, which was compiled by a team of reporters from Vermont who have been following his career. Although I found nothing of earth-shattering significance, the book did provide a bit more background for the themes covered in the political biography.

As Dean suddenly appeared on the presidential campaign radar, he evidently appeared on the Vermont political radar. Leading up to his stints as governor, Dean was not widely known in his own state. Politicians and reporters alike seemed caught unawares by this rise in the political ranks.

As governor, he received kudos and complaints. This book provides some of the problems with getting particular legislation going and some of the fallout, which his book did not have. The creation of civil unions legislation is one such example as is his environmental record.

This leads to my problem with the book. The book's intent is to inform us about Dean rather than persuade us one way or the other. In a few articles, the writer takes the time to quote as many pro-Dean people as anti-Dean people. Even though I feel good about being empowered to choose my own path, I would like to have seen the writer's stance stated more aggressively.

I would recommend this book for those wanted to know a bit more about Dean or those who wish to "fill out" what they've read in the political biography.

5 out of 5 stars Vermont journalists know Dean best.......2004-02-17

This book is very interesting, because it isn't a fluff piece.
The Vermont journalists who wrote the chapters know who
Dean is, and how he behaved in times of crisis.
I don't agree with all of Dean's positions, but after reading
the book I know what kind of man he is. He would
be a great President.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of specifics on Dean's political and personal history.......2004-01-16

I read this book hoping to gain enough information to decide whether or not to support Dean's candidacy. My ambivalence stemmed largely from my questions about Dean's record on environmental issues during his Vermont governorship -- which has been bitterly criticized by some Vermont environmentalists. I am also troubled by the fact that Dr. Dean is much more conservative than I on issues such as the war on drugs, gun control, welfare reform, and the death penalty. On a deeper level, my ambivalence was rooted in my concern whether his apparent forthrightness and appearance of being a rare, principled politician was "for real."

Dean is under attack from opponents who portray him as waffling on issues according to political expediency, not trustworthy or reliable, etc. Such attacks are to be expected, but I wanted more detailed background information on his history and record than what I could find on the Internet to determine whether I thought they were founded in truth or just more political rhetoric.

This book was what I had hoped for -- packed with facts which appear to be objectively presented. It covers Dean's Vermont environmental record in detail, allowing me to conclude that, although I will probably be disappointed with some of his environmental actions on a national level if he becomes president (he sided with business interests in Vermont to the lasting detriment of long-standing environmental protections), he does also have a history of going against the flow to make major contributions in the environmental arena in that state -- that he is not nearly the environmental radical that I consider Bush & Co. to be.

The book also covers a broad range of Dean's other positions and political history. In addition, it gives personal background on Dean that helped convince me that throughout his life he has consistently acted in a principled way according to his beliefs and ethical judgment and that he is his own person -- not beholden to special interests.

This is a person who, during the decade he worked nearly full time as a physician, also volunteered in poor communities, did significant volunteer and paid work in politics, and built his schedule around spending time with his family. It is a relief to me that, despite the fact it's unlikely there will ever be a viable candidate who agrees with my progressive opinions on issues, at least there do appear to be principled people out there dedicated to public service who are also mainstream and organized enough to have a chance at the presidency. Many thanks to the authors of this book for the good information.

4 out of 5 stars Topical Outline of Dean.......2004-01-08

There are several books out there on the shelves about, or authored by, Howard Dean. I chose this one because it was written by independent observers; people who are not connected to the Dean Campaign for President. I wanted an objective account of the his background and his political record. That is exactly what I got.

The first few chapters that detail his adolescent years are kind of dry, but informative. This book changes speed and gets interesting as soon as it tackles his public service career. His political record is one of a fiscal conservative, and a proponent of states' rights. If it wasn't for his passion for universal health care and land conservation, you might think he is Republican. He balanced the budget in Vermont, and when almost every other state had a budget crisis, his state was financially comfortable. At the same time, he was able to attract new business to the state, expand health care coverage, and protect wild lands from development. This book has a separate chapter for many separate issues, which enables the reader to study specific items of interest, and pass over those of little concern.

The mass media has painted Howard Dean as a left-wing liberal. Part of this stems from the Dean Campaign's attempt to unite the Democratic base. But the other factor in this misrepresentation is the Vermont civil unions law. Howard Dean did not write this law, but he did sign it. His postion being that he supports equal protection under the law. As the book explains, Dean is not a social radical, but simply felt giving equal legal rights to same-sex couples was the right thing to do.

The final chapters of this book attempt to explain the "Dean phenomenon," including his use of the Internet as a major campaign tool. And since the book was finished and rushed to publishers in the fall of 2003, the material is topical and will still be useful throughout the election year.

4 out of 5 stars A very useful Introduction to Dean.......2004-01-05

This brief book is well written and researched, a collaborative effort on the part of journalists who have been covering Dean's career for many years. The first chapter, in particular, is an excellent work of political journalism. Dean's candidacy has in itself become a major phenomenon and this volume goes a long way towards explaining why it is evolving the way it is. Overall it is balanced and informative. A good read.
