A very simple and easy read, but still suspenseful. Its interesting to see how the little indian poem will come to life killing off each character. A good twist at the end.
Very Suspenseful!.......2007-09-27
This story by Agatha Christie is very, very suspenseful. It is also creepy. It does not have a detective, which seemed strange at first, because I am used to following Poirot and Miss Marple as they solve the crimes. I did not really like any of the characters but I was still surprised when each one was killed. When one of the murders took place, pretty much any one of the survivors could have been the killer. Also, you get to read what each of the characters are thinking; the story is not just from one character's viewpoint. Is the killer one of the ten guests on the island, or is there a hidden person? The ending really got me. Of course, you finally end up with only two characters and one of them turns out to be the killer, but he doesn't stop there! You'll have to read the story yourself to find out what happens at the very end. (this review is by M.Charette)
Her Best, And The Finest Whodunit I've Read.......2007-09-24
I don't see how anyone who relishes a quality 'whodunit' could fail to love this book (even though a few Amazon reviews below show that it is the case). I am familiar with quite a number of Agatha Christies (including classics like Roger Ackroyd & Orient Express, etc.), and this one clearly takes the prize. Everything about it is delicious: the inescapable island setting, the strange circumstances, the unfolding pattern, and the overall feeling of a growing and inevitable horror. Most excellent of all is the plot, which is brilliantly conceived and executed. And at the end of the day, the author has played fair (I'll make one complaint below). What more do you want?!
There are only two (mostly minor) criticisms I would make. IMO, the first keeps this story from being the perfect murder mystery. Namely, there is an early scene in which the killer THINKS a deceptive thought (I won't type it here and ruin the story for any prospective reader), and the reader reads it. This is an unfair slip on Agatha's part. Sure enough the murderer might indeed SPEAK such a deceptive sentence, but to have him/her THINK it silently (and then have the reader simply read it at face value) -- I felt this was stretching credibility too far. For a perfectionist like me, it is a pity that it's in the text, and if only it could be excised! Secondly (and AC probably had no control over this), I prefer the British title of the book - Ten Little Indians - over the American and more popular one, which sort of anticipates and gives away too much (albeit subtly). Admittedly not a huge issue, just a quibble.
At any rate, mystery lovers you're in for a treat. Enjoy and savor the Grand Dame at her finest!

And Then There Were None, the brilliant masterwork by the much imitated Agatha Christie is a complicated yet accessible murder mystery. Ten guests arrive at an island, each with a different secret, and each uniquely mysterious. When all the guests have gathered, a mysterious voice, U.N. Owen??? indicts each for a crime. The bloodletting follows. Good luck solving this mystery. The Denouement is nothing short of brilliant.
Required reading for Mystery fans. A 5 star classic!

I read this after playing the PC game so the end was blown for me but still a fun story, I would recommend reading this book and then playing the game. (don't think the game ends the same way the book does)

This is a lovely "coffee table" book.
I found the information to be extremely general - book does not contain information that cannot be obtained in any take along travel guide such as Foders, Blue Guide, Cadogan, Rough Guide, etc. In addition, this book is NOT a good reference for individuals who travel on a budget. Most accommodations & ristorantes fall into the 4 star range; expensive.
This book is the perfect book for the pretentious American tourist.

As a frequent traveler to Tuscany, I find this book one of the best. It reflects the romantic and unique part of the world known as Tuscany. Wonderful coffee table book, resource for Tuscany and reading for rainy days.

Since my daughter and I are going to be in Tuscany in the spring, I found the book to be a great resource for the area. I'm looking forward to seeing things firsthand...but so glad that Ms. Ohrbach has done the groundwork for us...a much more efficient use of our limited time there!

Good travel writing is inspirational. It can inspire you to set off for unpronounceable capitals of wee, distant kingdoms, or, in the case of There's No Toilet Paper, inspire you to burn your passport and settle more securely into your comfy chair, feet up, and eyes riveted to the next more-humorous-in-the-retelling-than-it-was-in-the-experiencing story. It also makes pleasant airplane fodder on your way to your own misadventure. Doug Lansky has collected a fine trove of comic (when it's not happening to you) travel moments, as told by the best in travel humor. Dave Barry writes eloquently about failing to learn any Japanese save for how to order beer (pronounced "bee-roo") and big beer (pronounced "big bee-roo"). Mary Roach points out that utilizing an Antarctic ice-sheet outhouse at the very moment that a seal chooses to use its opening as a blowhole is an inauspicious way to start the day. And Bill Bryson stumbles disconsolately about Paris, wondering "Why does everyone hate me so much?" Lansky compiles humorous and strange trails from numerous writers. Each tale is unique. A collection of experiences from around the world. Some will hit home, while others are totally off the wall. Fun read.

I don't know what I was expecting, but the level of humor in these stories varied fairly dramatically. Maybe the "if you don't find our stories funny, it's you not us" line in the introduction should have been a warning. Some were laugh out loud funny (I have to say A Simian in the Cinema was the most memorable, and the two Bill Bryson stories didn't disappoint) and some were able to coax a smile out of me. But many others just weren't that funny. Some just weren't funny to begin with (An Irishman in Vurjinny and The Duck of Peace come to mind) and many others ended just as they seemed to be getting into a groove. In general, this collection seemed to be going for quantity over quality. Fewer, longer, and better stories would have been more effective.
The title is deceiving as well ... the "road less traveled" apparently includes places like Disney World, Virginia, and Caribbean cruises. Some stories do not disappoint, in terms of exotic locales at least, but the vast majority of the stories rely on slapstick/situational humor of relatively low sophistication or physical humor that is disappointingly context-free. I suppose this book would make for fairly decent light-reading in an airport or on an airplane, but the quality of the promised "best of travel humor and misadventure" is a bit lacking. Heck, even I have had funnier and better "misadventures" on the road than most of these stories. This was a collection that I really wanted to like ... but I have a hard time giving it more than 3~3.5 stars.

You won't get caught with your pants down without any good travel humor to read if you pick up Doug Lansky's laugh-filled collection There's No Toilet Paper On The Road Less Traveled: it provides a hilarious set of stories from wacky, strange adventures of travel gone wrong around the world. From a dead 'peace duck' attached to a car which brings attention and respect where ever it roams to a journey to Disney World which proves less than magical, here's the perfect light-hearted take- along tote for vacation.
A few good stories might make this book worth it.......2005-03-25
This collection of travel stories and essays by established writers is exactly what you would expect. A handful of the stories are real gems, but I found too many of them to be a little boring, and I'm not sure that the common thread of adventurous travel really comes through in some of the selections.
Highlights include two stories by the incomparable Bill Bryson, who has written several well-received books of his own, a story by editor Doug Lansky, and a bizarre story by Nigel Barley entitled "A Simian in the Cinema," which is about exactly that.
Other famous people whose writings were either less entertaining, or just didn't fit as well with the overall theme of the book, include Dave Barry, Steve Martin, P.J. O'Rourke, Margo Kaufman, Dennis Miller, and David Letterman. It should be noted that while all of these people and many more are cited on the back cover, the contribution of many of them is in the form of quotes and quips rather than actual stories.
As a big Bryson fan, I would say that his writings alone are worth the price of this paperback, but if you're looking for a consistent level of quality that truly represents the best in this genre, look elsewhere.
Funny stories for a quick short read.......2004-06-01
Here is a colletion of travelers tales many of which will at least force a grin on your face. Most of the stories are short thereby offering you an opportunity to get a quick read while on a fifteen minute break at work. While there won't be any great revelations made, people who regularly travel ought to be able to relate.
The book is comprised of republished stories of known authors (e.g. P.J. O'Rourke, Art Buchwald, Dave Barry). Therefore if you are a fan of a particular author you won't see anything new here. Barry's work, for example, comes form Dave Barry does Japan. That is not to say it is less funny, it just isn't new if you've read his other works.
Granted there are a some boring ones in here. O'Rourke's tale and the Duck of Peace, however, make up for those few which cause you to wonder why you are reading this. If you do find yourself wondering why you are reading the book though, take heart in the words from the hilarious introduction. "In short, if there's a story in here you don't find particularly funny, rest assured that our careful, mind-numbing research found that several people nearly wet themselves while reading it."

This was a fantastic book compiling the story of the greatest player ever and his comeback from Hodgkins Disease and major back surgery. If you enjoy reading stories of courage this is the one for you!

A concise summary of all good and bad things in dog foods........1999-07-20
Liz Palika succinctly summarizes the in's and out's of dog food. Everything you want or need to know about dog food. From de-cyphering the label, the ingredients, the different types of foods available ( and what the different major companies have to offer) to analysing the ingredients, both good and bad. She also explains why some of the major food companies make pet food, (to use their own 'by-products' profittably. A Good read, and what every concerned pet owner should know.

If you were new to wrestling, which I am not, and would like to know what happened this is great book. It takes care of many unanswered questions. It's basic great information, Thanks Bret!
Biography Doesn't Do "Hitman" Justice.......2002-01-07
When I heard that a book about Bret "Hitman" Hart was coming out that was going to be about his life and all his many adventures in the wrestling business, I eagerly waited with anticipation. Given the success Bret had with his award-winning documentary, "Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows," I expected the same kind of honesty and openness in his book. However, that is not the case. There are a few things in it worth noting, but otherwise it is just a glamorized magazine.
The book starts out with a forward written by the rowdy one, Roddy Piper. I should have known from the forward that this book wasn't going to be what I thought it was. Piper doesn't even get half his facts straight in his forward. In one paragraph, he says he had to face Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Title; this is true. He also says that a turning point in the match came when he threatened to hit Bret over the head with that same belt; this is not true. Piper was going to hit Bret over the head with the ring bell. This is the match that took place at WrestleMania in 1992. Kind of makes you wonder what else in Piper's forward is sadly mistaken for real facts.
Perry Lefko, the REAL author of the book, does an okay job talking about Bret's life growing up and his blossoming wrestling career. There are many never-before-seen family photos in this section of the book, and those are a nice addition. However, there is little mention of Bret's tenure in the WWF outside his debut and his controversial exit. Not only that, but there are hardly any photos of him wrestling in the WWF. I imagine this has something to do with the fact that Vince McMahon owns all of Bret's archives, and it is sad that such a legend like Bret Hart can't even have photos of his greatest matches in a book written about him. Much more time is focused on Bret's tenure in the WCW and the events that led up to him winning the World Heavyweight Championship in the Air Canada Centre on November 21, 1999. There is much left out in the book that could have been touched upon, and what is not in the book far outweighs what is actually in it.
This book almost looks more like a fancied up magazine than an actual book. There are pictures galore, which I am a strong fan of, but many of the pictures repeat, and hardly any are of Bret from the WWF. Over 90% are photos of him wrestling in the WCW.
Overall, this is a book that could have been much better. It's got a sleek design, a lot of photos and a few interesting facts about Bret that I didn't know before. But it could have been so much more. It should have been so much more.
I've heard that Bret is writing a book of his own and that it will be due out before 2002 is over. If Bret is writing the book himself, if someone else is not writing about his life, it will be the best-selling wrestling book ever. After his refreshingly honest documentary, I expect that same openness with is book. And, knowing the "Hitman," he will give us just that.
Why, Bret, why?.......2001-02-04
If you could put the life story of each wrestler of the modern era into a book, I guarantee that Bret Hart's would be the best. This man has, by far, the most fascinating life & career in all of pro wrestling; he has done everything, and he has had everything done to him. What's that you say? "What about Mick Foley, he wrote a great book?" He did, but he has not had half the career that Hart has; he didn't grow up in the Dungeon, he hasn't had nearly as many classic matches, he didn't get screwed out of the world title in his last WWF match, and he didn't punch Vince McMahon in the face. Every wrestling fan knows at least the bare bones of Bret Hart's story even if they don't like him, simply because his story is so interesting & so essential to the story of pro wrestling itself. Hopefully, someday he will write his REAL autobiography and we'll be able to read all about his childhood, all his fond memories of Owen, his backstage feud with Shawn Michaels, & what he thought about so many classic matches (I personally would love to hear in detail about the iron man match & the submission match with Steve Austin). He is a good writer (he's been writing a column for the Calgary Sun for over 4 years), and he is not afraid to shoot his mouth off. Until then, we have to settle for this: a kiddie picture book, full of fluff, with no insight whatsoever. Any respectable wrestler would be embarrassed to have his name attached to this, and I can't imagine someone of Bret Hart's stature not dying of shame. A twelve-year-old could have written this. The way this book insults one's intelligence is bad enough, but the potential a Bret Hart autobiography had makes it unbearable. If Hart puts forth some effort, he could easily outdo Foley and write the Bible of wrestling autobiographies. Maybe he will, now that he's retired and would be able to focus on it.
Worst book there is, was, or ever will be........2000-11-17
This is a ridiculous pamphlet with pictures of Bret and his title belts. This egomaniac wants us to believe that he won championships through fierce competition. We are led to believe that nothing is scripted and Bret actually wins titles by outwrestling his hated opponents. Bret doesn't even write it himself, no, it's poorly written by a "professional". It's basically a summary of some of Bret's matches over the years. YAWN.
