5 out of 5 stars I don't understand the critism.......2007-09-12

I don't really understand the lengths I've seen people go to to discredit this book or the 12 steps in general. I am not a member of AA but I have a family member who was saved literally from the brink of death by NA. The changes in her and in her life have been nothing short of miraculous. If it was a 'cult' that brought about this change in her then I say Thank God for the 12-step cult, for it is truly a force of good.

5 out of 5 stars If you think you have a drinking problem...........2007-08-12

I'm a recovering alcoholic. This book saved my life.

If you think you MIGHT have a drinking problem, buy this book and read the first 164 pages. If you identify with what you're reading, then you might want to consider hitting a few meetings.

You have to get beyond the prose of the author. It's very 1930's. Since he knew it would be saving a lot of lives, he wanted it to sound really important.

Many like me read this book, and found that in many cases, it seemed like the book someone stole a story out of our own experiences.

5 out of 5 stars It works if YOU work it.......2007-06-23

As an active, voluntary member of AA I must say that the program of recovery outlined in this book works *IF* you choose to work it. AA is not a cult, expects nothing in terms of finances and only SUGGEST'S a few very simple applications to lead a successful, joyous and sober life. AA is group therapy. It is a place for people to share their experience, strength and hope with each other so that they may stay abstinent from alcohol.
The "Big Book" opened my eyes as to how I was living. Reading the personal stories, being able to identify with the pain, the misery of alcoholism and the newfound hope has completely changed my life. I finally felt as if I were no longer alone. The 12 steps are only suggested and there is no need to believe in God at all. If you are an alcoholic or a family member or friend of an alcoholic I suggest you read this book. It is one of many solutions to tackle alcoholism and statistically AA has very high success rates. It works for some and doesn't for others just like everything else in life.
For those who don't think alcoholism is a disease, I suggest you write the American Medical Association and tell them they are wrong. Or feel free to bare witness to the blameless children, the destroyed marriages, the missed opportunities and the early grave that active alcoholism guarantees.

1. The Twelve Steps do not work as a program of recovery from drug or alcohol problems.
The A.A. failure rate ranges from 95% to 100%. Sometimes, the A.A. success rate is actually less than zero, which means that A.A. indoctrination is positively harmful to people, and prevents recovery. Some tests have shown that even receiving no treatment at all for alcoholism is much better than receiving A.A. treatment:
One of the most enthusiastic boosters of Alcoholics Anonymous, Professor George Vaillant of Harvard University, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Alcoholics Anonymous World Services, Inc. (AAWS), showed by his own 8 years of testing of A.A. that A.A. was worse than useless -- that it didn't help the alcoholics any more than no treatment at all, and it had the highest death rate of any treatment program tested -- a death rate that Professor Vaillant himself described as "appalling". While trying to prove that A.A. treatment works, Professor Vaillant actually proved that A.A. kills. After 8 years of A.A. treatment, the score with Dr. Vaillant's first 100 alcoholic patients was: 5 sober, 29 dead, and 66 still drinking.
(Nevertheless, Vaillant is still a Trustee of Alcoholics Anonymous, and he still wants to send all alcoholics to A.A. anyway, to "get an attitude change by confessing their sins to a high-status healer." That is cult religion, not a treatment program for alcoholism.)
The A.A. dropout rate is terrible. Most people who come to A.A. looking for help in quitting drinking are appalled by the narrow-minded atmosphere of fundamentalist religion and faith-healing. The A.A. meeting room has a revolving door. The therapists, judges, and parole officers (many of whom are themselves hidden members of A.A. or N.A.) continually send new people to A.A., but those newcomers vote with their feet once they see what A.A. really is. Even A.A.'s own triennial surveys, conducted by the A.A. headquarters (the GSO), say that:
81% of the newcomers are gone within 30 days,
90% are gone in 3 months, and
95% are gone at the end of a year.
That automatically gives A.A. a failure rate of at least 95%. But the GSO does not count all of those people who only attend a few meetings before quitting -- they don't qualify as "members". (That amounts to "cherry-picking".) If we included them, then the numbers would be much worse.

First there is the propaganda technique of "everybody's doing it": "AA or a similar Twelve-Step program is an integral part of almost all successful recoveries".
That is a complete falsehood. The vast majority of the successful people recover without A.A. or any "support group". It's what "everybody" is doing.
Then they use the propaganda techniques of use of the passive voice and vague suggestions: "It is widely believed that not including a Twelve-Step program in a treatment plan can put a recovering addict on the road to relapse."
It is widely believed by whom? And what do those unnamed people know? What are their qualifications? Are they doctors? Medical school professors? Or salesmen for a 12-Step treatment center? Why should we care what some unnamed invisible fools allegedly believe, anyway?
The authors also use the propaganda technique of fear-mongering: you will be "on the road to relapse" -- you will probably die -- unless you practice Bill Wilson's Twelve Step cult religion.
And then the fluff-headed Pollyanna attitude is outrageous: Just going to the wonderful A.A. meetings is supposedly all that is needed to fix some alcoholics.
But since A.A. has a zero-percent success rate above and beyond the normal rate of spontaneous remission, that cannot possibly be true.

Believe nothing just because a so-called wise person said it.
Believe nothing just because a belief is generally held.
Believe nothing just because it is said in ancient books.
Believe nothing just because it is said to be of divine origin.
Believe nothing just because someone else believes it.
Believe only what you yourself test and judge to be true.

I took many ideas from this book and applied it to my own life. It was very helpful

Book Description

Contrary to popular belief, we do not have to be perfect to do God's work. Look no further than the twelve disciples whose many weaknesses are forever preserved throughout the pages of the New Testament. Jesus chose ordinary men - fisherman, tax collectors, political zealots - and turned their weakness into strength, producing greatness from utter uselessness. MacArthur draws principles from Christ's careful, hands-on training of the original twelve disciples for today's modern disciple - you.

4 out of 5 stars Twelve Gracious Apostles.......2007-09-27

In discovering the lives of the Lord's apostles, I found the nuances and tidbits very original and insightful. I however differed with MacArthur's title, for in his own MacArthur Bible, he describes them as 'gifted men'.
As I recall, it was Ephesians 2, which refers to the church being built on the foundation of the apostles.

So it was with special care not to upset this privileged position that I set out to glean from their lives what MacArthur had presented.

A good subject and marketable to the majority of 'unskilled' Christians, who have a 'thing' about apostles, most likely describes this effort.

5 out of 5 stars very good book.......2007-05-22

This book is very good. It made me look at Jesus in a whole new way. He was doing everything for them to make them what they became. I strongly recomend this book to everyone that wants to learn about Jesus.

2 out of 5 stars Subtly Calvinistic.......2006-10-05

Be prepared before you delve into the particulars of the lives of those 12 men whom Christ chose to be His disciples. MacArthur's Reformed Presbyterianism manifests itself on page 12 ( paperback edition )when he states: " They ( being the 12 disciples ) represented the true Israel of God --- a genuinely repentant and believing Israel."

This is the trademark of Calvinism/Reformed Theology, Replacement Theology, otherwise, known as Supersessionism. According to MacArthur and others of his denominational persuasion, all promises and blessings given to Abraham and his seed were rescinded by God and given unconditionally to the Church under the New Covenent. This is promugated by MacArthur in spite of the numerous prophesies found in Ezekiel, Zechariah, Romans, and Revelation regarding the restoration of a Jewish homeland and an ultimately repentant people; also, in spite of the scriptural fact that Paul recognizes in I Corinthians 10:32 to " give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the Church of God. "

God has certainly not cast aside the nation of Israel forever. They are likened to the adulterous wife, repudiated, but ultimately to be purified and restored, as pictured in the book of Hosea. The invisible Church is comprised of believers who put their trust and faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, just as God is preserving those remnant of the Sons of Abraham until the Kingdom Age is ushered in by Christ himself.

To be truly credible, MacArthur should have clearly stated his predisposition to liken the Church - established by Christ when Peter made his historic confession and thus coming to fruition at Pentecost - as the replacement entity for the Abrahamic Covenant.

One should prayfully be reminded that God will " Bless them that bless thee " - referring, of course, to the wholly gracious and unconditional promise made to Abraham and his descendants.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting.......2006-05-05

Many times when we get into non-fiction books we just don't think it will be an easy read. This book really gives great information about the 12 disciples and does it in a way that makes you want to keep reading to find out more. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning but has problems with most of your textbook types of material. I enjoyed this book and learned a good bit as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-26

This is another great read from John MacArthur, one of the soundest biblical teachers of this day and age. In it, John uses the information given us in Scripture to give a full picture of the 12 apostles and personalities. Personally, I found this very enlightening and though I did not identify with just one apostle, I found certain elements of each one within myself. The message of John's book is that God can, and does, use just about any type of person that is willing to humble him/herself before Him. You don't have to be a charismatic orator, a mighty warrior, or a human prodigy to turn the world upside down. Just as God used 12 ordinary men of the first century to topple empires, so He can and will use you! Praise be to the Lord forever!

4 out of 5 stars Seeing the apostles for what they were through God's eyes.......2007-08-06

I enjoyed reading this book. It's a summation of Dr. MacArthur's sermons over the years on the disciples, edited for easy reading. It's divided into four sections, the first consisting of the best known disciples. The second and third concern the lesser known disciples and the last section, Judas the betrayer.

I found the explorations into the lives and character of Peter, John and Andrew to be most inspiring. I learned some things about these men that had escaped me, or were not as vivid, beforehand. I also enjoyed the background on the second group which incudes Philip and Thomas and I agree with MacArthur that Thomas gets short shrift from most Christians, when he is, in fact, no less doubting than any other disciple.

Seeing these men for the human beings they were is most helpful to any Christian or person who is examining the truth of the Gospels. What is fascinating is how MacArthur makes these characters (at least in the first two groups) tangible to us ordinary folk. God chooses the foolish things of this world, and the weak, in order to make clear that He, and He alone, is responsible for what these people accomplish. These lowly fishermen and sinners went on to change the course of civilization and impact all of us even today. They were uneducated, simple people who were used greatly of God. They learned what real love truly is through the life, example and sacrifice of the Christ.

While Dr. MacArthur's writing does evince his Calvinist theology, the scripture he uses is not used out of context or s "proof text". Rather, it is used as the basis for what he believes God is trying to tell us through these men. Jesus DID say, "No one may come to me except the Father draws him" and other hard sayings. The book meanders a bit, through the last section involving the almost anonymous lives of the lesser know disciples, until the last section where Judas' motivations are analyzed, successfully I think.

I didn't learn a whole lot more than I already knew about the twelve, but it's defintely worth reading and studying simply for the points Dr. MacArthur makes about how God works.

5 out of 5 stars great resource and Bible Study.......2007-06-09

After reading this book and using the accompanying workbook I taught a Bible Study on this and WOW...it was well accepted and loved. A unique view of the diverse personalities of each of the disciples, why Jesus chose them and how He molded them into devoted followers.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Study for Men.......2007-03-09

This is by far one of the best books to use in a study with men. The men were given a specific disciple to read about and report on. Every one of the men enjoyed their study that they completed the book before our next meeting. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Intimacy.......2007-02-03

I love this book! In a wonderful way the author makes the chosen twelve real and human, giving great insight into their weaknesses, strengths and deep love for Jesus Christ.

Book Description

The Penguin Classics debut that inspired a classic film and a current Broadway revival

Reginald Rose's landmark American drama was a critically acclaimed teleplay, and went on to become a cinematic masterpiece in 1957 starring Henry Fonda, for which Rose wrote the adaptation. A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, Twelve Angry Men holds at its core a deeply patriotic belief in the U.S. legal system. The story's focal point, known only as Juror Eight, is at first the sole holdout in an 11-1 guilty vote. Eight sets his sights not on proving the other jurors wrong but rather on getting them to look at the situation in a clear-eyed way not affected by their personal biases. Rose deliberately and carefully peels away the layers of artifice from the men and allows a fuller picture of America, at its best and worst, to form.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an amazing dramatic experience.......2006-10-03

Based on Reginald rose's teleplay, which then became an Academy Award nominated film, TWELVE ANGRY MEN is dynamite listening. The cast is stellar, including Dan Castellaneta (remembered for the voice of Homer Simpson); Jeffrey Donovan (to be seen in Sundance's Come Early Morning); Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman and the Princess Diaries); Robert Foxworth (who played juror #3 on Broadway); James Gleason (The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd); Kevin Kilner (Shopgirl); Richard Kind (Spin City, Curb Your Enthusiasm); Armin Shimerman (Star Voyager); and Joe Spano (Hill Street Blues).

As they've shown in the past, LA Theatre works presents the best in audio drama, always offering award worthy performances by gifted actors before a live audience. Twelve Angry Men is one more amazing dramatic experience.

As most know, the Twelve Angry Men comprise a jury that is charged with determining the fate of a 19-year-old boy who stands accused of murdering his father. The action takes place during one afternoon as their deliberations reveal the biases and character of each man. This is a drama that has stood the test of time, speaking to us as eloquently today as it did some 50 years ago.

Riveting listening!

- Gail Cooke

4 out of 5 stars "The burden of proof is on the prosecution... that's in the Constitution.".......2006-09-23

Twelve Angry Men is one of those American classics that has grown more memorable over the years, an examination of a judicial system that allows each man his day in court with a jury of his peers. Although written in 1954, the play remains relevant in its intent. Juror Eight is pivotal, the one man who refuses to take the easy way out, requesting a logical examination of the facts before jumping to conclusions. The result of this one man's stand is significant, a gradual shifting of opinions as the other jurors speak their personal concerns, assumptions and general willingness to participate in the process in a meaningful way.

Each of the jurors, like Americans in general, brings his own mind set into the jury room. The evidence as presented acceptable to the majority, the first inclination of the majority is to vote the accused guilty. To further complicate the drama, the room is unbearably hot, some of the jurors anxious to escape the sweltering crucible of the small space, unwilling to put in the time or energy necessary to reach common agreement. Yet Juror Eight holds out, refusing to give in to the pressure of the more verbal jurors, calmly arguing the facts of the case and asking his fellow members to reconsider their opinions. Over time, the more thoughtful members become willing to discuss the troublesome aspects of the case before them, although those who have no patience chafe at the changing of opinion.

The beauty of this play lies in its simplicity, democracy in its purest and most practical form, when a single voice speaks to reasoned consideration. Despite the complexities of the various personalities and their views on crime, law and order and life in general, reason prevails, each character opening to the extraordinary experience of sharing opinions, calmly discussing the pertinent details of the case and reaching a decision based on more than impulse. While the play is dated by the composition of a twelve-man jury, commonplace at the time, the message is unchanged by the intervening years. As simple as its premise, Twelve Angry Men is a civics lesson in play form, a reminder of the legal tenets of a Democratic society. Luan Gaines/2006.

5 out of 5 stars Twelve Angry Men.......2006-02-22

We have just finished this reading this play in my Lit. Class( 7th grade) and I actually really enjoyed it! It mostly centers around the theme of the courage to be different and standing up for one's own beliefs. What surprised me the most was at the end, Juror #3 gives up because he is afraid to stand alone in contrast to Juror #8 who was the only one in the beg. of the play who believed that maybe the boy wasn't really guilty and that he deserved a fair decision made by the jury members. This is also written by the same author who wrote the play "Thunder on Sycamore Street" which also deals with basically the same themes.

4 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Much Better.......2005-09-07

Twelve Angry Men is undoubtedly one of the best dialogue-driven stories of modern times. I would recommend that everyone be exposed to this story in either book, play or movie format sometime in their life. However, for anyone who has difficulty with reading or concentration, this particular format may prove somewhat difficult. The characters do not have names but only go by "Juror #1," "Juror #2," etc. It can be difficult to keep up with which character is which. Otherwise, one of the best stories around.

I first came across this book at my brother-in-law's house. I picked it up and dipped in briefly, liked the thought I read and then put it down. Ever since leaving his place that day, the little book has regularly come to my mind, and the simply truth I read on the page that day. I feel an affinity with the book, partly because it is understated and never showy. It is serious, without being melancholy; it is deep, without becoming stereotypical. Reading it is like having an intimate conversation with a trusted friend, except the dialogue is inside, and silent. It makes me feel good knowing its there, for me to open and dip in again, to feel what I felt the first time I picked it up all those years ago: this is true.

I have used this gem of a book personally and in the wilderness program, Galena Ridge, I operate for at-risk teens. The beauty of the book is encapsulated in the April 1st reading....every experience we have, every choice we make, is a "medicine wheel" telling us much more about ourselves than it tells us about others or the world around us. The reflections in this book take on new meaning with each reading, helping us learn about ourselves as we embrace our courage to grow and change.

5 out of 5 stars For the recovering man.......2007-07-05

This book is the cornerstone of recovery for men and used by men as an aide in recovering from addictions, co-dependency. While not conference approved literature it parallels much of it in its focus.

4 out of 5 stars A good way to start the day.......2007-05-21

I was given this book 20 years ago and have just recently gotten into the habit of reading it every morning. There are some days when the reading really hits me but even more when it doesn't. My main complaint is that there are many readings specifically directed towards men when only a few of those really have to be. It didn't get 5 stars because I have other daily reading books that speak to me much more often and others that I don't bother with or really hate. See my other reviews if you want to know which ones. This one is certainly worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars A gift for oneself and others.......2005-08-16

My husband has used this book for about ten years and has found it tremendously helpful. It lives next to his chair in the den, and he spends about 30 minutes with it in the morning while I'm still asleep. He reads the daily entry and meditates on the suggestions and affirmations on each page. He's commented that it provides comfort without being sugary, and he values the thoughtfulness of each entry, the low-key approach, and the wide range of sources quoted. I've browsed in and believe that it would be helpful to anyone, regardless of one's spiritual orientation... or lack of same.

He recently bought a new copy to send to a friend who is having serious problems in his life, and we hope that its calm wisdom will help him as well.

5 out of 5 stars Serenity.......2007-10-16

Few things start my day better or help slow down an out of control day like taking time to read and absorb a daily meditation from this book. Each day's reading is a short page, starting with a quote, moving on to some written thoughts about the quote and how it applies to me, and to today, and then ending with a synopsis of the thoughts. Very helpful, very concise and very much on point for anyone in recovery.

I am totally pleased with how Amazon.com runs it's business. I love ordering books and DVDs and CDs. I have never liked ordering things online, but Amazon.com has changed that for me.
This book being an example. Each day I have a reminder that I am ok, and that life is indeed great.

5 out of 5 stars SAA of Tulsa.......2005-10-14

A primary text for our Fellowship of SAA in Tulsa. Most members have personal copies also. Truly an extremely valuable tool for avoiding the "bubble" of addiction and staying focused on soberity.

This workbook doesn't ask any question beyond an eighth grade comprehension level. The guys and I were looking for meat and found baby food.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful but long.......2003-06-06

We got this for my husband to use in a Bible study he leads. It has LOTS of questions, almost so many you wonder if the people will get through them. They are, of course, very good application questions as would be typical of MacArthur. He wishes there was more info just for the leader or a separate leader's guide to ease preparation, though there are some leader notes in the guide. Overall, very good and highly recommended. Guess he got pampered by another Bible study series we used that came complete with leader's guide and extra info to use! BTW, most of the questions are application oriented and thus have lots of lines to write out your answers and thoughts, hence the number of pages.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific for personal or group study!.......2003-06-06

We bought this book along with the study guide for my husband to use in leading his Wednesday night Bible study. The book is enjoyable to read and informative, typical MacArthur. The workbook has application questions and is actually rather lengthy. I do wish the book came in paperback to lessen the cost. After perusing it, it seems it will work out great for the Bible study (material is suitable length in each chapter, good questions to guide discussions). My husband said he wished there were a Leader's edition that would have extra notes just for the leader, but the study guide did have some notes for that purpose (just not as much as what he wanted). The book springs from a series of sermons he gave on the subject, so the men are fleshed out and brought to life with plenty of application, rather than just being the run-of-the-mill information that everyone already knows. I think you'll find it very interesting.

    Product Description

A few sea captains, a couple of college professors, a battle-hardened general, a senator, a congressman, and a knavish adventurer: What could such men have in common? In addition to an eye upon the broader world and a streak of independence, each had a vision of the United States as a model sovereign. All were part of an American effort to create an overseas empire--one that would avoid the mistakes of the European powers and redefine the face of imperialism. Beginning with the 1839 voyage of Captain Charles Wilkes that opened American relations with Samoa, here are biographies of 12 men instrumental in the incorporation of America's five island dependencies. Besides Wilkes, it covers Richard W. Meade III, who negotiated a treaty with Samoa; Albert B. Steinberger, premier of Samoa; Henry Glass, who took Guam for America; Nelson A. Miles, who led the 1898 conquest of Puerto Rico; B. F. Tilley, first governor of American Samoa; Joseph B. Foraker, first congressional overseer of the possessions; William A. Jones, anti-imperialist and reformer; Frank McIntyre, military administrator of America's holdings; Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., governor of Puerto Rico; Paul M. Pearson, first civilian governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands; and Anthony M. Solomon, who inaugurated the acquisition of the Northern Mariana Islands in 1963.

      Book Description

A master of naturalism, Theodore Dreiser brought the American novel into the twentieth century. Fascinated by the city street, its parade of fashion and its threat of poverty and degradation, his journalistic eye lets us see as they were first seen the now familiar realities of modern living. "Sister Carrie" traces the fate of a small-town girl drawn into the brutal metropolitan worlds of Chicago and New York, and Sinclair Lewis called it "the first fresh air since Mark Twain and Whitman." "Jennie Gerhardt"'s vital but naive heroine emerges superior to the succession of men who exploit her. With honest emotion and respect for unvarnished truth, "Twelve Men" muses on the exemplary lives of ordinary men in search of lasting values with which to face the new century. Together, these three works exemplify the energy, originality, and genius of one of the great modern American writers.
