A most excellent book.......2007-08-25
Well detailed, provides basic info about lamp types, color, and specific information/suggestions for each room, even outdoors/landscape lighting. A bit pricey, but still worth it. Read it cover to cover.
Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide.......2006-03-03
This is an excellent practical and technical book for learning about and designing lighting for a home. It's aimed at the professional, which I appreciate as an intern architect. Part of my job is to design sophisticated lighting schemes for custom homes, which takes a lot of experience and knowledge. This book has really helped me to pinpoint the different kinds of lighting needed for each space and how to place it and specify it in a professional way for the greatest effect. Most architects take years to learn this, but I'm getting a crash course by having this resource. It's not a fluffy coffee table book, it's a technical manual that teaches HOW to properly understand and design lighting for a residence. I highly recommend it.
Excellent Resource.......2006-02-25
This is the best book that I have seen on the topic. The practical advice is well balanced with technical information. A must-have for any Designer's Resouce Library.
Lighting secrets revealed!.......2005-11-29
As a designer, I can't say enough good things about Randall Whitehead's Residential Lighting, A Practical Guide. This is his follow up to his wonderful Lighting Up! A Practical Guide which has been a staple of the design community for seven years. All the best parts of the earlier book have been retained with the addition of more than 200 photos in both color and black & white.
The chapters have really been packed with up-to-the-minute information about many of the new technologies that are now becoming the norm, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs). There are also a whole new series of enlightening sections in the back of the book with great tips on how to run a design business, how to get published and how to deal with clients.
Randall's way of writing is very entertaining and I feel it has revitalized the often dry category of textbooks. His funny, casual method of doling out information really helps make this book a pleasure to read. His energy and humor is infectious as he lets readers in on the secrets and practices of good lighting for homes and gardens. What also sets this book apart from other texts on lighting is how he approaches the subject first from the aesthetic side then gradually lets the reader in on the technical reasons how lighting design works.
This is an inspirational reference guide for all aspiring designers... as well as for established design professionals like me. Even savvy homeowners will latch onto this book as the insider's guide to the secrets of great lighting.
A lighting technique that works!.......2005-04-22
I've read a few other lighting books over the years but found that Whitehead's approach is superior for creating moods in rooms. My wife and I prototype interiors in our home and the results from "A Practical Guide" have been outstanding. We move and change the lighting with temporary luminaires and various wattages to explore the various possibilities before using them in real designs for clients.
Beware - after buying into his concepts you will be frustrated by the lighting almost everywhere you go.

A Must have for new team lead.......2006-04-16
I bought this book in the middle of a project where we face lots of problems. We come accross about 90% of the problems that are describe in this book. How I wish I could have read this before involving in leading a project. The recommendation and advice are very practical. It took me a few trials to get to the solution by myself before this. Now I can just refer to this book whenever I have problem in handling project issues and save me lots of unnecessary trials. I highly recommend this for new project leaders.
Easy read for any techo...........2004-07-09
Whitehead covers alot of the basics of team management. It shouldn't be difficult, and that what Whitehead explains through "questioned" title chapters. It works quite well because you can zero in on the question about leadership in your situation that may be plaguing your mind. The book is short and easy to read, so it can be read in about 3 days on a bus.
The author subscribes to making you aware of the qualities of good managers and how to handle common types of problems, like what to do when you don't have the technical knowledge about a problem, or how to handle difficult/disruptive team members. In summary, Whitehead helps you get into thinking like a ternary leader, that is you are part of a group, all working towards a common goal and you, (the teamleader/manager), should not dictate your "will and whim" to others.
The only criticism is that it is probably too light on the aspect of project management. There are issues about project management of people in terms of requirements, risk, scheduling that are not discussed. This book is about working with your colleagues not clients.... but overall a good read at a good price.
Really understands the project lead role.......2003-09-26
After reading this book, I would say for sure that Richard Whitehead understands the role of the project lead. I would buy this book for a new, or existing lead, if I wanted him to understand the challenges he might face. I really applaud this and would add that many books feel like they were written from the outside looking in (sure, everyone on the outside wants twice the functionality in half the time!). I would love to see an update that included more strategies for success however. A lot of the solutions seemed to be based on a specific set of circumstances and personalities. Perhaps adding some examples from others who faced similar challenges, and overcame them with different methods, would increase the impact of this book.
Advice that will reduce the very difficult to difficult.......2003-07-22
While the programmer in me has often railed at the managers of software development, generally with very good reason, but admittedly sometimes for reasons that were less than pure, I do readily admit that it is a very difficult job. Humans tend to have distinct sets of skills, some of which seem to have a fundamental incompatibility. Writers of good software seem to be predisposed to having limited social and managerial skills and in general one needs to be able to understand a great deal about software in order to be able to manage its' creation. Programmers are also known as being "somewhat difficult" to organize, so even the best managers can be challenged by what is oftentimes an unruly bunch of developers.
However, difficult does not mean impossible, I have yet to meet a quality programmer who did not have a "weakness", that properly exploited, will cause them to work intensely and log an enormous amount of keyboard time. Teams are built in many ways, and Whitehead quite properly notes that many (most) successful teams are made of people who respect and rely on each other's skills, but may not personally like each other. Some of the most successful sports teams of all times were made up of players who did not speak to each other outside the bounds of play. Arguing and bickering, as long as it is within clearly defined boundaries, should be considered normal and tolerated. Attempts to dictate that people like each other and engage in silly "teambuilding" exercises more often lead to failure rather than success. Other examples in the book show the same good sense, as Whitehead clearly has experience in making projects work.
The book is split into sections, which are
* The new leader.
* Project management.
* Leading people.
* Requirements capture.
* Stress and conflict management.
* Relationship with management.
* Making decisions.
* Analysis and design.
* Testing and project release.
Under these sections, there are a total of 40 different points, with a header and explanation of some of the rights, wrongs and different shades of gray inherent in the points. While forty is not large enough to cover all possible contingencies, I cannot find a reason to criticize those that were chosen.
Writing good software is hard, and managing hard people is difficult. However, from this book you can find some very sound advice that will improve your chances of managing a project to a successful conclusion.
Practical Guide.......2002-02-06
This is an excellent "how to" book. It describes in detail all the steps required to properly lead a software development team. It pays particular attention to conflict resolution including examples on how to handle difficult situatuions and people. I get the impression that in Richard Whitehead's limited project experience he has had significant exposure to conflict.
It would have been useful if he had fully explored some of the other paths during conflict resolution. He explains what to do in certain circumstances, but does not go the additional step; what if it doesn't get results, what then?

Never will put it down.......2007-04-01
Super easy format to read. Has many pictures and diagrams that are easier to understand than reading a whole page. Explains everything in plain english. Easy to follow along with. Each page is in full color, and the pictures are whimsical and fun ( unlike the internet for dummies which is in black and white which is so boring). The pictures are funny. Explains everything including:
A brief description on how to set up a website
The History of the internet
how to do research on the internet
how to set up an e-mail address
how to shop online, and why prices are usually lower ( like Amazon!!!)
how the internet works
how to join chatrooms
and how to connect to the internet if you haven't already ( although I guess I shouldn't have mentioned that because if you haven't why would you be on amazon)
Explains so much more!!! Leave right next to your computer because you will always be looking at it!!!
For moms and dads and anyone else new to the Web.......2001-12-04
Without a doubt, one of the best ways for non-technical folks to learn about the web and the internet. I'm personally opposed to labeling anyone unfamiliar with computers, a dummy. This book teaches by using mostly graphic imagery which clearly illustrates the concepts being discussed. A definate add-on for anyone getting, or giving a new computer, Mac or PC.

In Facing Financial Dysfunction, Bert offers profound guidance with simple concepts in understandable language. He helps us examine and change our belief systems, our behavior, and our capacity to accumulate wealth. He is a master teacher, and in this authoritative book he offers the best of what he knows. Develop Money Management Skills.......2006-10-25
I have read both editions of Facing Financial Dysfunction and have been helped by the sound reasoning of Mr. Whitehead. Especially for people who do not have a professional financial advisor the book makes it possible to understand why we do what we do and how better to manage money. The author has a way of getting to the psychological aspects of accumulation and helps create awareness of the stages of life and how to take steps to maximize what assets you have at each stage. If you think you should pay off your mortgage and if you think you need to create special savings for your children's college fund and if you think you need to save every penny, read this book, it may surprise you.
Get it "right"...right from the beginning.......2006-10-01
Whether you are 35 or 65, it is never too early or too late to get it right. This book tells you, in an easy to understand format, just what you need to do in all aspects of your financial life. The best parts are in Chapter 7 and 8 which give you some really sound advice on retirement, housing/mortgage and the holistic approach of building wealth among all your assets into a "Cambridge Pyramid".
Most other investment books just talk about asset allocation from the point of view of stock and bonds. This includes cash, real estate, employer stock, gold, small business and venture cap.
There are also some really interesting chapters that allow you to identify the causes and symptoms of financial problems. You can use the book to identify your "financial personality" and overcome your limitations.
This book is a really really good read and will save you $1000s of dollars by avoiding financial mistakes and making much better financial decisions. It is a "must read!"

Customer Reviews:
Should have titled it "WoW for Dummies".......2007-10-15
I agree with many of the other reviewers who felt this book's title was somewhat misleading, or at least not descriptive of its true content. However, I do understand why prospective buyers would probably prefer not to think of themselves as dummies.
In addition, this book was dated as soon as hit the shelves. As other reviewers have noted, some of the addons recommended by the authors no longer function correctly in the current version of World of Warcraft. Other recommended addons still work, but have largely fallen out of favor as newer addons with improved features have taken their places. Nevertheless, the descriptions of what the addons do and how they can be used is still a useful introduction to many concepts in WoW.
In short, I would only recommend this book to people who are:
1. afraid of talking to other players,
2. uncomfortable reading online forums and asking questions, or
3. unwilling to learn how things work by trial, error, and experience.
For any serious potential addon authors out there, you will probably learn more from looking at existing addons' code and by actually speaking with other authors.
Great Book.......2007-10-11
This book is wonderful. I tried for months on end to try and self teach off of various websites on how to properly write .lua code and XML for addons. I finally broke down and purchased this book and it has helped leaps and bounds over anything I learned on various websites because it teaches from the ground level up. The first section of the book is perfect for someone who is just starting WoW or just starting to explore various WoW Addons. The second section is geared more towards people like me who are just starting to or want to learn how to create their own addons for the game. If you are new to programming or even new to writing .lua and XML scripts I recommend you purchasing this book.
Not worth it!.......2007-09-20
Unless you are wanting to learn how to create your own macros, don't buy it. The book is out of date with World of Warcraft. I learned how to do everything online (regarding add ons). I guess it would be ok for the basics for writing your own add ons for the game.
Not about "hacking", just an out-of-date catalog.......2007-09-09
I'm so disappointed in this title that I'm returning it to Amazon for a refund.
The book's title and description are misleading. The book isn't about "hacking" anything; it's just a catalog of popular add-ons to the game. After an introductory chapter about how add-ons and macros differ, how add-ons can be installed and managed, each add-on is described and reviewed. Unfortunately, the authors don't describe their criteria for deciding which add-ons to include.
Undoubtedly, the term "hacking" was included in the title to make the book appear sexier; the book is really about expanding WoW functionality using available add-ons, not "hacking" in any sense of the word. Perhaps more frustratingly, the authors don't explain why most of the described add-ons are useful. Sure, I can get an add-on that tallies the damage done to me by various monsters, and by myself to the monsters. But why do I Want that? How does the use of such an add-on, for example, help me have a more enjoyable or productive gameplay experience?
Point is, though, that finding add-ons online isn't hard at all. A book cataloging them is practically worthless, as it is out of date just as soon as it is printed. You're better off finding interesting add-ons by searching your favorite World of Warcraft forum and asking other players.
The book's treatment of writing add-ons is superficial at best. Since this book is not a programming tutorial, any reader who wants to write their own add-ons needs to have some software development background. And anyone with some software development background would be able to examine existing add ons to "borrow" code, or learn how to write add-ons by reading the product documentation.
Great help.......2007-09-05
First of all, I didn't buy this book, my wife bought it, which could easily entail an entire discussion about how the impossible can, in fact, REALLY happen...but that must wait for another time! Quick take away regarding this book: I liked it a lot!
I am a software developer turned business man, so I have a background in programming (but haven't had to write code for about 7 years now). So, from that perspective, the code sections weren't much of a problem, but getting an understanding about how WoW addons function was very helpful. I wasn't quite as interested in the early sections of the book (although it was good to know about some of the existing addons)...my interest was on creating my own addons from scratch. In that regard, the book was great, and the steps were clearly laid out on how to create the Whereabouts addon.
This book is not intended to be a complete primer on EVERYTHING you need to know about writing WoW addons, nor is is meant to be a review of every single existing addon (they change)...rather, it is a nice balance that starts with what existing addons do, and leads into what to do if you'd like to try writing one of your own. In that regard, I think the book did a very decent job!
Customer Reviews:
An excellent primer for anyone interested in the subject.......2000-04-15
This book is part of an excellent 5 book series dealing with democratization. In this particular tome, different perspectives are used to explain the transition from authoritarianism to democracy. The importance of international actors, bureaucracies, entrepreneurs, the military, and economic conditions are examined to explain how transitions take place. Although some perspectives are county specific, all of them can be expanded to explain many cases around the world. All of the authors are experts in the field and the essays are highly readable.
Book Description
Understanding and improving your organization's business processes is vital in today's economy. Using non-technical language, this book describes the importance of these processes and the internal and external forces that shape them. It then explains the kinds of computer software available for improving and managing business processes in a flexible way. Detailed case studies illustrate that successful process management depends on attention to the human, organizational and financial factors involved, as well as the strategic implications. Ideal for non-technical managers, this book will also appeal to MBA and business studies students.

At Last a Simple to Read Comprehensive Book on Process.......2006-07-16
This is the book that most people thought would never be written. So many people have been urging Jon Pyke for so many years to get down on paper what he really thinks. Of all the people in the process space, Jon is probably the most widely misquoted! It has been all too easy for people to say "Well, what Jon actually meant was!" and then turn it to suit their own purpose, now we can all get to find out what Jon actually thought!
This book is a veritable treasure trove of information, every page fact with some fact or factoid of note. There will be those in the BPM community who may find aspects of what Jon has to say hard to swallow. But, Jon more than most has the right to state his views and give corrections to the origins of some of the terms. As CTO of Staffware from 1992-2004, potentially the only truly successful vendor of the workflow era, Jon was in effect the father of workflow and by that fact the de facto father of BPMS - not that some would like to acknowledge that fact.
The book although jam packed with information, is a very easy read and, in the opinion of this reviewer at least, is probably the most complete, logical and digestible explanation of what process are and why they are important I have seen.
Full of tips and tricks on what to do and what to watch out for as you - in the name of the title - Master your Organizations Processes. The book does not set out to be a cook book, but instead guides your thinking and provides plenty of checklists to help you on your way. This approach is to be applauded, as all too many a good book on process has been spoiled by the first you do this, then you do this approach. The reality is that one size really does not fit all.
Its nine chapters are strongly focussed on success in business and never do you get the sense of technology for technology's sake - pretty good going for a former CTO! The chapters also contain lots of good case studies which certainly help and are easy to relate to.
If I had one criticism of the book it is that by its definition of BPM as technology it propagates (in my opinion) the lie that BPM is technology rather than using the more widely accepted term BPMS for the technology to support the management philosophy that is BPM.
The book is an absolute must read for any business, systems or process analyst in order to make sure that they stay focussed on what is really important - business results. It's non-jargon, non-technical style means that for any Manager it will serve as a great introduction to process management and will prove invaluable to them in the selection of processes to improve, tool selection and technology selection..
Now of course all we have to do is wait and see where Jon pops up next, it is now 2 years since his departure from Staffware, Jon what are you up to, when we will we be seeing the latest from you in the process space?

Essnetials of Nursing Leadership & Management.......2007-09-15
This is a very good book. It is very easy to follow and not as boring as others. It has pretty good tables which are easy understand and the study questions are a plus. I like the fact that every chapter has a self-assessment test before you start reading it. It makes you think before you even get into the chapter.
Essentials of Nursing Leadership and Management.......2007-09-15
Good basic textbook for nursing students, education of new nurses, and/or persons who have recently been promoted to a leadership position without previous leadership experience.
useful material.......2007-02-22
This book was a requirement for my nursing issues and trends course. The book itself was basic stuff that we as nurses already know. What was good about the book was that it took what we know and showed us how to apply it to everyday situations.
Good Job.......2005-10-02
Very prompt service and the book is just what I ordered.

Book Description
Wireless Imagination addresses perhaps the most conspicuous silence in contemporary theory and art criticism, the silence that surrounds the polyphonous histories of audio art. Composed of both original essays and several newly translated documents, this book provides a close audition to some of the most telling and soundful moments in the "deaf century," conceived and performed by such artists as Raymond Roussel, Antonin Artaud, Marcel Duchamp, Andre Breton, John Cage, Hugo Ball, Kurt Weill, and William Burroughs.
