Book Description

With the rise of integrated marketing communications (IMC) and the decline of paid media, the importance of public relations is on the upswing. Companies are realizing the benefit of speaking with “one voice” in both paid media and nonpaid efforts. And as media rates continue to rise though response rates fall - and potential buyers are less moved by what they view as “sales messages” - effective PR will only grow more vital. An excellent resource for professionals in every field, Public Relations: The Complete Guide provides a valuable hands-on reference for professionals ranging from midlevel marketing and sales managers to senior-level executives.

1 out of 5 stars Not Very Informative -- Much Better Books Out There.......2007-09-12

I bought this book after reading many of the great editorial reviews, quotes, and customer reviews. It sounded like a complete guide that would step up my public relations tactics. After reading the book however, I realize it was just good PR.

If you've been in the PR business for even a little while, this text won't teach you much. It covers the basics, which is nice if you don't know them, but it's more suitable for an introductory course on public relations than anything else.

If you really want to learn a lot about public relations, I would recommend Complete Publicity Plans by Sandra Beckwith. It's nearly 1/3 the cost of this book, and yet it's worth much more than this one.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any public realations professional.......2007-06-28

I am a professional PR and marketing man. I constantly strive to hone my skills by reading trade articles and books about the subject. If you hope to become adroit at marketing, you must do the same.

Public Relations: The Complete Guide is an excellent manual that will help you understand how PR works. It covers almost everything, from effective press kit drafting, to writing and releasing excellent press releases. But Joe Marconi doesn't stop there. He outlines good habits to develop in different PR situations; from product PR to damage control PR; from inner corporate relations PR to investor PR.

If you hope to use public relations in any way to market products, or to market yourself, Joe Marconi's Public Relations: The Complete Guide is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2004-11-04

Public relations (PR) is a critical feature of any modern institution's marketing program. However, it is often not seriously considered as a legitimate part of corporate administration because it frequently focuses primarily on tactics - what to do, when and how - and rarely rises into guiding overall company strategy. Yet, if you want a practical guide that will show you how to create a media kit or develop a crisis management plan, Joe Marconi's book is for you. It delivers solidly at this general tactical level, where it is, indeed, a working guide. However, it does not transcend into more theoretical reaches. The book skimps on some more meaty, advanced areas such as the theory of public relations and how it fits into overall corporate strategy. The chapters also do not seem to be arranged in progressive order by subject. For example, chapters on speechwriting are sandwiched between those on crisis management and ethics. However, we find this book valuable for those who want an overview of PR's work-a-day aspects, including normal business tactics if not sophisticated corporate strategy. It also will help those who are not fully familiar with what PR can deliver to a modern institution in challenging times.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book!.......2004-07-07

This book was very informative with an excellent format. Incredibly useful guide at the end of the book with examples of press releases and such. I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great on the essentials..........2004-07-07

Cover to cover, this books is filled with great insight and useful information, especially for entrepreneurs and small business owners who cannot afford to hire agencies or PR consultants. That said, however, before entering the visibility fray, a few notes of caution: (1) Have a clear understanding of who you are and what you want people to know about you and your company; (2) Recognize the importance of evaluating how and where to get the right publicity for the right reasons; and (3) Remember that you only get one chance to make a first impression! 5 out of 5 stars from Faraday to Marconi.......2002-09-11

Radio was as much the culmination of the work of a series of scientists in the 19th Century, starting with Faraday, as it was an invention by Marconi. This book aims to illustrate the contributions made by these scientists and show how each was dependent upon the work and ideas of his predecessors; Faraday, Henry, Maxwell, Hughes, Fitzgerald, Hertz, Lodge and Marconi. The book represents the result of a long period of study by a man who knew the story well and researched it thoroughly; although Gerald Garratt died in 1989 the manuscript has been completed by his daughter.

Gerald Garratt had a special interest in what might be termed the "pre-history" of radio. His book therefore outlines the sequence of development from Faraday's first prediction and concept of the electromagnetic field, the mathematical definition of the conditions for propagation of waves by Maxwell, the demonstration of their physical existence by Hertz, identification of the need for resonance between transmitter and receiver by Lodge and finally Marconi's successful practical application and "invention".

Contents: Introduction; Michael Faraday; James Clerk Maxwell; Heinrich Hertz and Oliver Lodge; Sir Oliver Lodge; Aleksandr Stepanovich Popov; Guglielmo Marconi

Readership: Historians of technology and science; Radio engineers; Individuals with an interest in radio and media communications, especially vintage radio, and broadcasting history...

Book Description

Lucas Gallagher is the geek who bought the land Michaela "Mike" Marconi wanted for her dream house. She thinks he's infuriating, annoying and totally rude. Yet, he gets to her more than any other man ever has. But though Lucas may be a scientist, he's the rock star of scientists. His inventions have made him millions, his research is reshaping the study of medicine and he holds patents for numerous technological marvels. But now, when it means everything, he's failed. His younger brother, the family's 'golden child' is dying of cancer and Lucas, despite his brilliance, can't help him. In Chandler, he tries to hide from the world he knows. Mike tried running away from her problems when she was a kid. When her mother lay dying, Mike ran. When her world crumbled, Mike hid. And she's learned that the only way to win is to stand your ground and keep trying. She doesn't understand what Lucas is talking about half the time, but she knows exactly what he's feeling. And while criticizing his complete lack of architectural ability, and remaking the house he's trying to build, Mike finds herself slipping into Lucas Gallagher's life. She wakes him up and he shakes her up: the two of them are complete opposites, and nothing can keep them apart. Until Lucas's brother Justin comes home to die.

5 out of 5 stars The Youngest Marconi Sister Finds Love.......2007-05-14

In the second installment of Maureen Child's Marconi Sisters Trilogy (after And Then Came You: Sam's Story (The Marconi Sisters), the story focuses on the youngest sister, "Mike" Michaila Marconi. All ready reeling from the fact that her dream property was bought by someone else, Mike has insinuated herself into the owner's life--by changing the way things are constructed in his house, and dropping by constantly to make helpful suggestions.

For Lucas Gallagher, the owner of the property Mike still considers her own, Mike is a thorn in his side. She's bossy, demanding, and somehow gets him to make changes on his own house that he never even considered. Added to that is the mutual sexual attraction that seems to ignite sparks whenever she's around, and the whole situation is a messy one.

I loved this second installment of the series! Mike's wild past comes back to haunt her, Lucas's brother Justin is barging back into his life, and the secondary characters truly make this book enjoyable. As Lucas and Mike fight to discover if they have the kind of sparks that can last a lifetime, lives are changed forever for each and every member of the Marconi family--and their added friends and community members.

I can't wait to get started on the final book in the series, Turn My World Upside Down: Jo's Story (The Marconi Sisters), which centers on oldest sister Jo!!

3 out of 5 stars Marconi baby meets her match.......2007-03-20

Smart aleck local plumbing contractor Mike Marconi has her eyes set on some pristine property and an old Victorian house that she wants to fix up and eventually live in, as she is tired of living in the family homestead. The only problem is newcomer Lucas Gallagher has informed her that he bought it and though her family's construction firm is hired to make the renovations, Mike makes constant modifications to the architect's plans, and Lucas finds himself fighting with her for every change as the two fall for each other. Can love conquer all? How will the family react to a secret their father has kept over the last decade?

Child's second in the Marconi trilogy is a funny and romantic story. Mike and Lucas first traded barbs in "And Then Came You," the previous Marconi novel. Child has maintained that frenzied relationship; picking up where they left off. The story is fresh with believable dialogue and the humor ever-present in so many of Child's many novels. She's great at creating dynamic characters, and her Marconi sisters, while fiercely loyal to one another, each are distinctive in their own right. I just wish that she didn't feel she has to bring characters from the Candellano series into the story - the inclusion is distracting since they don't really add anything to the story.

"Crazy" is followed up by the best in the series - "Turn my World Upside Down," which is eldest sister Jo's story.

4 out of 5 stars Love is a wonderful thing.......2005-04-20

Michaela Marconi, or Mike as she is called, has been saving up to purchase some land to build her dream home. When she stops by to visit her little oasis she stumbles across the very handsome Louis Gallagher. When Mike tells him that he is trespassing on her land, her heart is shattered to pieces when he informs her that he is the new owner. Mike serves as the plumber for Marconi Construction, a family owned business she shares with her father and two sisters. The Marconis have been contracted to build Louis' home. So, Mike decides that since her building plans have been thwarted, she will build Louis' home as if it were her own.

Louis is so fed up with Mike that he doesn't know whether he's coming or going. She is constantly sidestepping him and making changes to his floor plans. Although the changes have been for the best, he refuses to let her know. Mike and Louis suddenly find themselves entranced with one another. Since neither is interested in a commitment, they embark on a no-strings-attached sexual relationship.

Mike and Louis are as much alike as they are different. It is this combination that paves the way for a very enjoyable read. Maureen Child has penned a wonderful romance that will keep you entertained until the last page is turned. I am highly anticipating Turn My World Upside Down, the follow-up to A CRAZY KIND OF LOVE.

5 out of 5 stars Fine contemporary romance .......2004-11-30

For two months the plumber has driven Lucas Gallagher crazy as he has his dream house built in Chandler. Lucas confronts Mike insisting he had the best San Francisco architect draw up the plans that she constantly modifies without his permission. Inside he knows her changes have been for the better, but cannot help but continually challenge her. For her part Michaela "Mike" Marconi cannot comprehend why she" stalks" him, but enjoys baiting her client though she wonders if it has to do more with the property she covets than the hunk she desires.

As Mike and Lucas fuss and fight over every turn of the wrench, they fall in love. However, Mike always runs away from potential love since her mother died when she was a child; she also has other secrets that she believes will drive men away even if she stayed. Lucas has never been a lady's man, leaving those pursuits to his twin brother while he relates better with scientific research. Even though they share delightful lovemaking, neither changes their mind that this is a brief affair though neither want to be the one to end it.

This fine contemporary romance begins as an amusing battle of the sexes, but with the turn of a wrench becomes a serious family drama. Mike is a fabulous lead protagonist fearing love because of people die while Lucas avoids relationships as he knows first hand how easily they collapse. Fans will appreciate the second Marconi tale (see sister's Sam's story AND THEN CAME YOU for the first novel) and salute Maureen Child for her clever interweaving of the next daughter's tale into this solid story line.

Book Description

Josefina 'Jo' Marconi's world just shifted out of orbit. Both of her sisters are pregnant, she's facing finals in her quest to at last get her college degree, the man who traumatized her in college is running for a Senate seat, and she has to move back into the family home and watch over the boy whose very existence shattered her nice little world. Ten-year-old Jack is the product of an affair her father had while her mother was dying of cancer. Ever since Jo found out about this, she and her father have been walking a wide berth around each other. As if that wasn't enough complication, Cash Hunter--the man known as "The Woman Whisperer"--has moved back to town. He has a reputation: once a woman sleeps with him, she's completely satisfied, and she immediately heads off to save the world. As Jo becomes more and more interested in Cash, she learns that he's determined not to sleep with any woman he wants to stick around--especially not Jo. And Jo becomes just as determined to seduce him and prove that she's the one woman who will stay by his side. Together, Jo and Cash have to teach Jack and each other the true meaning of family and trust.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Last Marconi Sister's Story is Another Winner.......2007-05-14

Ahhh...finally, Jo's story! I loved both And Then Came You: Sam's Story (The Marconi Sisters), Sam Marconi's story, and A Crazy Kind of Love (The Marconi Sisters), Mike's story--and TURN MY WORLD UPSIDE DOWN was a perfect ending to this trilogy!

Josephina "Jo" Marconi has had her world turned upside down. She's about to finally finish college, ten years after she first enrolled. She's still struggling to forgive her father, Hank, for his one time of infidelity during her mother's illness. She's attempting to bond with her ten-year-old brother, Jack, the result of that one-time mistake of her father's. And she's trying, without much luck, to avoid Cash Hunter, the Woman Whisperer of Chandler, California.

But then things get complicated. Jo finds out who the Money Fairy is, the person who has been leaving money anonymously for needy members of Chandler . She can't understand how her two both really pregnant sisters forgave their father for his sins so easily. And she most definitely cannot understand how to let go of the secret shame she's been harboring for years--that years ago, as a young college student, she was raped by a man she thought she was in love with.

TURN MY WORLD UPSIDE down is the perfect ending to the winning trilogy by Maureen Child. Ms. Child is known for her well-developed characters and all-too-human story lines, and this book doesn't dissapoint. As Jo comes to grip with her past, she and Cash must learn that trust and love is about more than taking a chance, about more than being worried about what other people might think, and about more than living in fear that the person you love could possibly wind up causing you pain.

I'm sorry to see this series end, but all three books are definitely winners, well worth the time to read!

4 out of 5 stars The final entry in the Marconi trilogy.......2007-03-10

Eldest daughter Jo is on her own as her two sisters are too pregnant to help her run the family's construction business. Also out of the picture is her father, who's on cruise and has left half-brother Jack in Jo's care. Jo's still hurt that her father had an affair a decade earlier (resulting in Jack's birth) while her mother lay dying, but wants the chance to bond with Jack, whose mother also recently died. Unfortunately, with her sisters on bedrest, she's stuck relying on sexy Cash Hunter, the "Woman Whisperer" of the county to help her out on her construction jobs.

Cash has a tendency to have the women running to do good deeds after spending time in his bed, which makes it difficult to have a relationship. But Jo's intrigued enough to prove she has staying power... will it be enough to tame a man used to one-night stands? Together, they provide stability to the young Jack, who has seen his share of heart ache and being left behind.

Jo and Cash were first introduced in "And Then Came You," and their combustibility even then was evident. Loaded with chemistry and a sweet little boy, Child's conclusion to the Marconi sisters' series is a gem. The one drawback is Child's need to bring every character from her previous Candellano books into the storyline (with maiden names and all). Their inclusion just seems forced, adding nothing to the story that is otherwise engaging.

5 out of 5 stars amusing third Marconi contemporary romance .......2005-08-03

Josefina "Jo" Marconi wonders what happened to her world. Her two sisters, Mike (see A CRAZY KIND OF LOVE) and Sam (see AND THEN CAME YOU) are married, pregnant, and boffing or eating all the time. Her father confessed to an affair ten years ago that led to a stepbrother Jack, who now stays with Jo as his mother recently died and their dad is on a cruise. The worst change is hiring woodworker Cash Hunter to repair the Barclay House as he wants to seduce her, but she does not want to make love and then save the world as his previous females apparently have done.

Jack struggles with the dramatic shifts in his life while Jo decides to fight fire with fire and go after Cash, expecting to scare him away. He backs off but it is too late as Jo and Cash are in love. As Jo struggles to prove to the two men in her life that they can become a family, the two males are not sure whether to flee towards or away from the female predator who wants to shower them with love.

The third Marconi contemporary romance is a fun tale unless you are pregnant. Jo is a wonderful lead character unable to empathize with her siblings while "stuck" with Jack who she does not know or understand, Cash, and the family business. Cash is her ideal counterpart as he feels for her brother-in-laws, provides big brother understanding to Jack, and wants Jo in his bed permanently not globetrotting after a tryst. Maureen Child closes her Marconi siblings with a strong zanier finish.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Memorable and Original.......2007-07-01

I really enjoyed this book. It is a memorable read with an original premise. The author did a wonderful job of revealing layer by layer what happened in Sam and Jeff's past. I couldn't put this book down because I wanted to keep reading and discover how Sam and Jeff were going to come to trust each other again. I loved the ending of this book. Sam and Jeff's road to "happily ever after" was unique, cute, emotional and fun all in one. Definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Contemporary Romance.......2007-05-14

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I'd been holding out reading the Marconi Sisters trilogy until all three books were released--now that they are, I picked up AND THEN CAME YOU yesterday and finished it today.

Samantha "Sam" Marconi is the middle child, the sensible one, the "good one." Not as take-charge as her older sister Jo, or as quick-tempered as her younger sister Mike, Sam is the one to stay in line. That was always true, until she married her first love, Jeff Hendricks, at the age of eighteen. That was nine years ago, but Sam hasn't forgotten a thing--falling in love, watching her young husband leave, getting pregnant, giving up the baby for adoption, coming home to face her divorce alone.

But then Jeff shows up, with a few surprises. They're not divorced. The daughter Sam gave up was raised by him. His mother plotted not only their divorce and the fact that Emma, their child, grew up with only one parent, but the truth that Sam has no idea that Jeff never wanted divorced all those years ago--that he does, in fact, think Sam divorced him.

AND THEN CAME YOU is a wonderful contemporary romance. Two great main characters who never truly got over their first loves, a daughter who wants only to see those around her happy, and a supporting cast that will totally delight you.

Mike's and Jo's stories will be next for me--the only thing I worry about is how I'll feel once this trilogy is over!

4 out of 5 stars First Marconi story sets the framework for the great series.......2007-03-21

Samantha Marconi gets a surprise when her ex-husband is at her door announcing that they're still married. She and Jeff married as teens, and after he left for London, she was alone and pregnant and after not hearing from him other than receiving divorce papers, she gave their child up for adoption. Though she specified that it was to go to a couple, Jeff's mother made arrangements for Jeff to raise Emma, neither knowing the extent at which Jeff's mother connived to keep them apart. Jeff needs the divorce now because he plans to remarry. As Sam gets the opportunity to get to know her daughter, Jeff fears that she might try to take her away from him. She does hold up signing the papers in order to arrange a custody agreement. Neither count on their love for each other to continue nine years later, but lightening appears to strike twice. Will they be able to learn from the past and forge ahead?

Child's first in the Marconi series sets the tone for the books to follow, introducing the heroes that will eventually spar and capture her sisters' hearts, as well as the family patriarch who has joined forces with his three daughters in a construction firm. They are a raucous bunch, but nothing is more important to them than family, which made her reason for giving Emma up in the first place somewhat implausible. I did feel a little cheated that Jeff's mother died before she was taken to task for her machinations, but overall, considering the somewhat clichéd subject matter, Child's sense of family and attention to detail made it a great romantic story, with little Emma at the forefront (though perhaps a little too forgiving of the mother who abandoned her).

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!!!.......2006-06-30

This book was awesome and it was cute. I loved all the characters and especially Jeff. This is a definite read and a great one.

Samantha is the middle Marconi daughter, the sensible one, yet she marries wealthy, impulsive, and sexy Jeff Hendricks during her first year of college over the loudly voiced objections of her family and his. Just a few months later, her marriage falls apart, and she returns home heartbroken, and pregnant. Stunned to discover nine years later that her divorce had never been finalized, and that Jeff had raised the child she gave up for adoption, she eagerly seizes the opportunity afforded by Jeff's intention to remarry in order to negotiate for joint custody of Emma. This engaging second-chance-at-love story displays Child's trademark tenderness toward children, her belief in the importance of family through good times and bad, and the sort of engagingly quirky supporting characters she portrays so well, all set in a familiar, warm, and comforting hometown atmosphere.

3 out of 5 stars Implausible plot .......2005-08-12

I have read several of Maureen Child's books and enjoyed them a lot, but this one was not up to par. The story has three major problems. The first is the break up nine years ago that precipitated the divorce between Sam and Jeff. No reason was ever given for why Sam pushed Jeff out of their apartment in nothing but his boxers or why he took off for London without even telling Sam about it. It was all very nebulus and vague. No real conflict was ever mentioned as the why Sam and Jeff couldn't get along. As for the divorce, what modern woman would sign divorce papers without consulting an attorney and insisting on a settlement of some kind? The second problem concerns the adoption of Emma. And this was the big one that I just couldn't get around. I, too, find it unlikely that Sam would have put her daughter up for adoption with such a supportive family. But the real question is if the letter Sam sent to Jeff telling him she was pregnant was returned to her UNOPENED, how in the world did Jeff's mother find out about it? Sam didn't even tell her family about Emma until after the adoption was a done deal. And what incompetent or fraudulant attorney handled the so-called adoption and let Jeff's mother have Emma when Sam had specified that Emma was to go to a two parent family? Just how did Jeff's mother get her hands on Emma? Big hole in the plotline there. Also, I believe that a legal adoption requires that BOTH parents relinquish parental rights, not just the mother. I could be wrong about that, but I don't think Emma could have been put up for adoption without Jeff signing the papers, too. I thought the whole plot surrounding Emma's adoption was unbelievable. As for the third problem, there didn't seem to be any emotional closeness between Sam and Jeff. I felt it was all just flash and fire, no real feelings. Anyway, I forced myself to finish the book and am hoping that Mike's story will restore my faith in this author.

Book Description

Two-thirds of Americans report having greater trust in companies aligned with a social issue.

Cause-related marketing programs not only enhance a company’s image but also increase employee satisfaction. Ninety percent of employees in companies with such programs report feeling proud of their company. Cause Marketing will show all businesses, regardless of size, how to work with a socially responsible organization, cause, or event to increase brand equity and consumer and employee loyalty, to differentiate their brands from competition, and to boost profits.

Author Joe Marconi has created the most comprehensive book on this timely subject. Explaining how to implement a cause marketing program, he joins with the organization Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) and discusses never-before-published case studies, such as Mattel, Eddie Bauer, General Mills, and Starbucks. BSR is a global resource for companies seeking to sustain their commercial success in ways that demonstrate respect for ethical values, people, communities, and the environment.

Your company's a success, thank you, and now you want to give something back. What should you do? Write a check? Start a foundation? Joe Marconi explains that cause marketing is all this and more. In cause marketing, you identify how your company can best make a contribution while leveraging its good deeds to improve business. This makes sense: people like to buy from companies that care. But it's not as easy as it sounds. How do you choose the right partner (or do you want a partner at all) and design a program? What are the potential pitfalls? Marconi's book is a primer, complete with ample real-world examples, on the principles of cause marketing, with insight on the challenge of taking credit without appearing phony or selfish. Although it is more rhetorical than practical, we recommend this book to senior executives who want to learn about the benefits - and drawbacks - of cause marketing.

5 out of 5 stars The ROI of Social Responsibility.......2002-09-07

Marconi has made a valuable contribution to the on-going dialogue about marketing by explaining how to "build image and bottom line through socially responsible partnerships, programs, and events." Presumably he agrees with John Hill that PR is "truth well-told." The most effective marketing programs, those which create or increase demand, include PR initiatives. As we all know, there are negative connotations of PR because it is not always truthful even if well-told. Marconi notes that "there has been a dramatic increase in the allocation of funds from marketing budgets that provide some benefit to nonprofit organizations. The expenditure of these funds to serve the interests of both the company and the community has come to be known as [in italics] cause marketing." The one-year anniversary of 9/11 caused major corporations and their agencies to question whether or not to advertise on that tragic date. Their concern was that any advertising, however thoughtful and sensitive, could be perceived as self-serving. That is a legitimate concern. In Chapter 5, Marconi cites six examples of "self-serving and opportunistic" initiatives during a national period of sadness following 9/11. Here's one: "Morrell & Company announced in a full-page ad that it would hold a `Grapes of Grief and Gratitude' benefit wine auction for families of the New York firefighters, police, and emergency response professionals." This is cause marketing at its worst.

Marconi also includes many examples of cause marketing at its best. That is to say, marketing which establishes contact with those who buy and use their products and services or support their issues and will feel better for doing so. "Cause marketing seeks to take the process even further when the marketer for a company (1) identifies a cause that the company can embrace and believe in, and (2) makes a connection with the constituent group that shares the company's dedication to that cause." What we have here, then, is a cohesive and comprehensive explanation of how to plan and then implement "cause marketing" at its best. Eminently worthwhile organizations receive at least some of the support they urgently need; those who provide that support, who demonstrate corporate social responsibility with active community involvement, generally "do well by doing good."

But here's a key point: Unless such support and involvement are -- and are perceived to be -- both appropriate and authentic (i.e. sincere), they invariably do irreparable damage to an organization's credibility. Marconi explains this point while examining a number of case studies of both effective and counter-productive cause marketing. All things considered, people generally prefer to do business with those with whom they share the same values and, better yet, with whom they share the same loyalties. It is obvious to his reader that Marconi cares deeply about corporate social responsibility and active community involvement. It would be a mistake, however, to assume that they should be primarily assumed by major corporations. Where I live, independent merchants generously support fundraising activities by local schools, athletic teams, and churches of all denominations. Their contributions are both monetary and non-monetary, donated because they want to be "good citizens," joining with others in the support of worthwhile causes. Of course, some of this "good will" results in additional business but that is not the merchants' motive.

In the final chapter of this book, Marconi reviews the rules, reasons, and rewards of cause marketing. They provide wise and practical guidance to any organization or individual either involved in "cause marketing" now or considering it. Once having read the book, I again reflected on the groundswell of responses to the tragedies which occurred on 9/11/01. Marconi suggests (and I agree) that principled cause marketing doesn't wait for "the next dark day" to fulfill itself. Rather, it should be an on-going process which responds to or creates opportunities to "make a difference," indeed to make a significant difference and for the better. Its ROI cannot easily be measured in terms of sales and profits. Those involved in cause marketing worthy of the name appreciate how important it is and know that its value to society is incalculable.

    Book Description

In this book, Clemente Marconi provides a new interpretation for the use of figural decoration in Greek temples of the Archaic period, through a study of the Archaic metopes of Selinus. The study of figural decoration on Greek temples has traditionally been identified with the broader study of architectural sculpture. At the same time, the original, articulated appearance of Archaic temples has been fragmented into a discussion of individual types. Marconi argues against both the typological approach and the tendency to investigate style and iconography as two aspects unrelated to the cultural and social background within which temple decoration operated. He explores the relation between style and function and examines the function of figures on temples within the cultural and social context of the communities for which these images were created. Critical to this exploration are the reintegration of the figures into the fabric of buildings, the space of Archaic sanctuaries and cities, and the ritual dimension that represented the context for the reception of the figural decoration of Greek temples. Marconi argues for a closer interaction between art history and disciplines such as semiotics, anthropology, and hermeneutics.

    Book Description

By 1897 Guglielmo Marconi had transformed James Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetic waves into a workable wireless telegraphy system, and by 1907 Lee de Forest had invented the audion, a feedback amplifier and oscillator that opened the way to practical radio transmission. Fifteen years after Marconi's invention, wireless had become an essential means of communication, as well as a hobby for many.

This book offers a new perspective on the early days of wireless communication. Drawing on previously untapped archival evidence and recent work in the history and sociology of science and technology, it examines the substance and context of both experimental and theoretical aspects of engineering and scientific practices in the first years of this technology. It offers new insights into the relationship between Marconi and his scientific advisor, the physicist John Ambrose Fleming (inventor of the vacuum tube). It includes the full story of the infamous 1903 incident in which Marconi's opponent Nevil Maskelyne interfered with Fleming's public demonstration of Marconi's syntonic (tuning) system at the Royal Institution by sending derogatory messages from his own transmitter. The analysis of the Maskelyne affair highlights the struggle between Marconi and his opponents, the efficacy of early syntonic devices, Fleming's role as a public witness to Marconi's private experiments, and the nature of Marconi's "shows." It also provides a rare case study of how the credibility of an engineer can be created, consumed, and suddenly destroyed. The book concludes with a discussion of de Forest's audion and the shift from wireless telegraphy to radio.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Where radio came from.......2002-02-13

This book is an excellent history of important events associated with the early scientific understanding of electromagnetic radiation and with the technical development of wireless communication. It answers many questions which have been raised concerning the roles of individuals who participated in critical events associated with the transition from electrics to electronics. Activities which occurred over 100 years ago are skillfully recreated based on extensive research involving many unusual references. The book is well written and demonstrates a high level of scholarship. It explains clearly how the rudimentary spark gap transmitter and primitive receiver which Marconi brought to England in 1896 was so effectively transformed that a successful transatlantic transmission of the letter S took place in 1901. The quality of the illustrations, circuit diagrams and figures obtained from laboratory note books and patent applications is excellent. No photographs of Marconi with various social luminaries of the time are included; this only enhances the quality of the book and the judgement of the author.

The author thoroughly documents the technical progression from Edison's monode, to Fleming's diode, to De Forest's triode and characterizes how the development and understanding of these important early hollow-state devices contributed to the ultimate introduction of continuous wave technology.

It has been illegal to communicate with spark gap transmitters since the late 1920's. Today few people know how such devices sound. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Marconi's first transatlantic transmission, VE3BBN was permitted to operate a low-power rotary spark transmitter on the 80 meter amateur band. (...)

      Book Description

Companies small and large are concerned about the increased difficulty in developing marketing vehicles that cut through the clutter and make a positive impact on sales-resistant prospects. To promote products effectively and optimize results, marketers must use all of the tools at their disposal in an integrated plan. In his latest book, marketing and PR authority Joe Marconi helps companies create and maintain an effective marketing experience. Noting that marketing productivity is on the decline due to saturation of sales messages, increased customer indifference, and easily copied competitive advantage, this cutting-edge book illustrates that people need to feel kinship with the product and the marketer. Packed with case studies, the book helps marketers create the contexts in which prospects can experience the brand on their own terms without an interrupting sales pitch. Combining the best of publicity/PR and marketing, the book reflects the growth of integrated marketing communications and the decline of paid marketing and media.
