Mastering Public Speaking: Study Guide for Grice and Skinner
ASIN: 0205467350 |
Book Description
Offering an ideal balance of theory and skills, this book provides a solid grounding in the how's and why's of public speaking, placing particular emphasis on critiquing, ethics, and critical thinking.
Written in a casual, lively style and clearly organized, this edition of Mastering Public Speaking builds on its previous success. The fourth edition retains its popular and distinctive emphasis on the ethical contract between speaker and listener and on the value of critiquing speeches to improve your own skills. Learn how to think critically as you choose speech topics, conduct research, organize content, select language, manage nervousness, and deliver speeches.
For anyone interested in Public Speaking.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre text.......2007-05-09
I had to use this book for a public speaking class and found it to be quite tiring to get through. Its few good ideas and suggestions are easily lost within its high-school approach and broad conjectures about communication.
Very nice.......2006-02-23
The book is very informative. It has cheatsheets printed on the back cover. There is also information to help you with your first speech because the author realized that speeches would be prepared before the student could finish reading the book.
Disappointing.......2004-08-04
I'd considered buying this book from Amazon, and decided to first examine a copy at the Boston Public Library. I was unimpressed. The tone seems aimed at middle-school students, and the text is littered with patronizing "Dick & Jane" anecdotes. A quick glance through the table of contents suggests that Grice and Skinner address nearly every conceivable aspect of public speaking -- but a closer examination reveals a complete lack of depth. It seems as if they simply brainstormed ways to add pages without actually investigating their subject.
The most derelict example I found was the second chapter, devoted entirely to a discussion of ethics. This chapter includes a section on plagiarism, where Grice and Skinner define plagiarism and warn students that getting caught may result in failing a class or being expelled from school -- hardly the sort of information you'd expect from a college-level textbook. Meanwhile, Grice and Skinner lazily sidestep the most challenging issue -- the employment of speechwriters -- by confining its mention to a brief, rhetorical question among the chapter-end exercises. In other words: "Here's a complex issue. We've exhausted our space with rudimentary ones, but we encourage you to do some real work on your own!"
There are some informative, useful books on public speaking. Richard Dowis and James Humes have each written excellent books on crafting and delivering a speech. Virgil Anderson and Ann Utterback have written valuable books on training your voice, and Livingston Taylor and Keith Johnstone have written classics on stage performance. My suggestion is to skip this book. I was thoroughly disappointed with its lack of ambition, and I'd hate to be stuck with a professor who found it respectable.

Book Description
CCNP Guide to Advanced Cisco Routing covers Cisco routing technology and concepts and is designed to offer preparation for the CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) Exam. It includes hands-on exercises reinforce skills needed for certification and success in the work environment.
Customer Reviews:
Detail, detail, detail.......2004-07-15
This book is *EXTREMELY* detailed in its discussion of routing protocols. Although the detail may be useful for becoming a guru in the intracasies of how Cisco routers do their thing, I don't think you'll find it particularly helpful for passing any of the cert exams. Especially because the book makes no mention of IS-IS. Again, if you want details including actual router output, this is a good book. If you want something useful for passing cert exams, look elsewhere.
Excellent Test Prep and Overview.......2003-10-25
This book gives a great overview of the material on the CCNP exam.

Book Description
This volume, Grice's first hook, includes the long-delayed publication of his enormously influential 1967 William James Lectures. But there is much, much more in this work. Paul Grice himself has carefully arranged and framed the sequence of essays to emphasize not a certain set of ideas but a habit of mind, a style of philosophizing.
Grice has, to be sure, provided philosophy with crucial ideas. His account of speaker-meaning is the standard that others use to define their own minor divergences or future elaborations. His discussion of conversational implicatures has given philosophers an important tool for the investigation of all sorts of problems; it has also laid the foundation for a great deal of work by other philosophers and linguists about presupposition. His metaphysical defense of absolute values is starting to be considered the beginning of a new phase in philosophy. This is a vital book for all who are interested in Anglo-American philosophy.
Customer Reviews:
Mystery Man.......2006-08-11
Grice was regarded by colleagues in philosophy as one of the brightest mean who never wrote. He, like John Wisdom, was an exceptionally brillant and nuanced man who (psychologist neede) would not publish.
What a shame. Maybe this in some small way fills a large gap.
Grice as father of a field of linguistic philosophy.......2001-05-08
Studies in the Way of Words, by Paul Grice, is a collection of papers by the late British philosopher of linguistics. His concepts such as the Maxims of Conversation and the basic ideas behind presupposition and implicature are vital to a robust understanding of communication through language.
As a philosophical text, Grice's work is a bit difficult to plow through. His prose is quite full of flourishes and there's enough amusing references in there to keep an interested reader going, however the reader must indeed be interested for this book to be of much use. Anyone expecting to fully digest any of the papers in this book would do well to plan on reading it 3 or 4 times. However, if done successfully, the concepts you'll take from it will indeed do much to expand your view of how linguistic communication works.
Rated 5 stars for its philosophical importance and 2 for readability, the 4-star rating given here is a sort of weighted average.

Lab manual.......2006-12-29
This lab manual accompanies the Network+ guide book. I used this for a college class I was taking. Unfortunately the computer lab I was taking the network+ course in was not able to accommodate all of the hands-on lab exercises in this book.
I have been working in the I.T. field and work with computer systems so I was fine not doing much of the lab exercises in the book. I passed my network+ certification with flying colors. If you do not have any hands-on experience with computer systems and network, I would suggest you do all the lab exercises in this book, along with the Network+ guide book. Although I don't feel that it's really crucial in passing the network+ exam, it does give you some practical familiarity with configuring and working with different computer systems (Windows and Linux) in the network.

Braille for the Sighted (Beginning Braille)
ASIN: 030908332X |
Book Description
Touch the Universe is an innovative and unique astronomy book. It is a combination of Braille and large-print captions that face 14 pages of brilliant Hubble Space Telescope photos with embossed shapes that represent various astronomical objects such as stars, gas clouds, and jets of matter streaming into space.
"Universally designed" for both the sighted and visually impaired reader, Touch the Universe takes readers on a voyage of discovery, starting at Earth, proceeding through the solar system, and ending with the most distant image taken by Hubble, the mind-boggling "Hubble Deep Field" photo -- the first telescope image ever to bring home to human consciousness in a deeply fundamental way the literally infinite reaches of our universe of galaxies.
As the author puts it, "A visually impaired person can still touch and smell a flower, or a tree, or an animal, but he or she could only imagine what an astronomical object is like ... until now."
Customer Reviews:

This is the best book on Architectural Illustration & Rendering. There is no other book like this. You'll see beautiful renderings from professional illustrators from around the world. If you use these techniques on your renderings or presentations.... you will stand out from your competition.
this is a letter to Mr. Grice.......2004-06-02
Dear mr. Grice:
I loved your book so much, that I have decided that this is what
I would like to do. I am unable to go to college, but I have completed architectural drafting at a local art school. What do I have to study to do renderings such as the type you have in the book? (10 stars!)
If you do get to read this, please contact amazon so that you
can answer my letter.
I tried to find a site where I could send you an e-mail, but
was not succesful.
Thank you so kindly.

This book is absolutely fabulous! It does not give instructions
on how to do this type of work. It is only to inspire. If
you have a passion for learning architectural illustration, as
I do, you will reach the heavens after looking at some of these gorgeous drawings. There are illustrations in airbrush, pencil, watercolor, tempra, and by computer. If that's what you are
looking for, it's worth every penny!

Bought as a Gift for Blind Daughter.......2007-05-25
I bought this book as a gift for my 11 yr old Daughter who is Blind.
I think the idea of having pictures that she can feel that are also illustrated so that myself and anyone else reading the book with her can see is GREAT! There is also printed text on every page so that sighted people can read it as well.
Out of all of the braille books she owns or has borrowed this is the best one in my opinion.
She was absolutely enthralled by this book. The information is presented in a way that was easy for her to comprehend. When I ordered this books I wasn't sure how she would react to a non-fiction book. I was pleasantly surprised to see that she absolutely loved it. All braille books should be done this well.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
Amazing.......2006-09-22
This book is absolutely amazing. I ordered it for my blind grandson and then ordered another copy for myself. The text is accurate and the illustrations are amazing, awesome and out of this world. The illustrator has truly brought a new level of learning to the blind. Good Job!!!
Wonderful for all ages!.......2006-07-04
My 6 year old loves this book. Much of the content will be current and relavant as he gets older and while he may not understand everything now he certainly enjoys it. The book is great for all ages and I have learned quite a bit. Of his library of braille books, this is his absolute favorite!
Touch the Sun: A Nasa Braille Book.......2006-03-18
An excellent book to teach students who are blind or visually impaired about the sun. The tactile representations and the descriptor for each tactile representation are just what is needed to bring these abstract concepts home.
Great Book.......2006-03-16

Book Description
A fresh look at the laws of nature, in startling, beautiful, and at times unsettling detail.
Working with a menagerie of insects and animals she raises in her New York City studio, Catherine Chalmers makes images that ask us to examine the lives we ordinarily overlook. What we find is by turns surprising, humorous, and thought
provoking.
In the series of photographs that gives the book its title, Chalmers vividly sketches the links between predator and prey, eater and eaten, from plant to insect to amphibian. Against a stark white background, caterpillars eat a tomato, a praying mantis eats a caterpillar, and a frog and a tarantula each eat a praying mantis. Another section, focused on "pinkies" (the pet-trade name for baby mice), shows with chilling clarity that the laws of nature apply equally to mammals as to the so-called "lower" life-forms. A series of photographs of praying mantises mating-during and after which the female devours the male-captures the metaphorical power and strange beauty of this infamous habit. The book includes an essay by the critically acclaimed nature writer Gordon Grice and a provocative interview with Chalmers by Aperture executive editor Michael L. Sand.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent & Odd.......2006-10-13
This book is truly odd, but weirdly invigorating. Anyone who ever had a pet give birth, be it a hamster or a dog, will find the section on pinkies unsettling. I think this is a great book.
it's like a car accident.......2002-04-23
I must say this is a pretty cool book although not for the squeamish. Graphic full color photographs that read like crime scene photographs or stills from a horror movie.
There's the sexy display between two praying mantis before the male becomes a post-coitus snack. Another praying mantis dances merrily on the head of a fat shiny toad before meeting its inevitable end. Caterpillars greedily gorge themselves on tomatoes only to be sucked dry by more ever present praying mantis.
The most graphic scenes though are the ones with the pinkies. Pinkies being born amongst a white blood smeared backdrop only to be gobbled up by another fat toad.
It's sick to look at and even a bit morbid at times, but it's Mother Nature and a testament to the circle of life and the survival of the fittest.
cool photographs.......2001-09-08
Truly fascinating but not for those with weak stomachs.
The book consists of excellent photographs of various critters (bugs, frogs, spiders, mice, snakes, etc.) eating or being eaten by others. Not for the squeamish.
The more prudish reader might also be disgusted by the scenes of hot, steamy preying mantis sex.
For those with the stomach for it, the material presented in this work provides a fascinating and detailed view of a small part of the world we live in.
Fantastic. Brilliant. Phenomena and Occasionally Revolting........2001-02-28
Fantastic. Brilliant. Phenomena and Occasionally Revolting. I want more.
"Life is Hard and Then You Die," I saw this bumper sticker on the rear of a car about the same time I got "FoodChain." I felt that this would be a great subtitle for this provocative book. The photography is stunning and Aperture, one of the leading publishers of fine art photography, has done a dazzling job in portraying the moments between life and death. Catherine Chalmers has given the layperson insight into the world that we live in but seldom see. Her progressive plates vividly take you from birth to death and then back again to birth. Caterpillar eats tomato, praying mantis eats caterpillar, tarantula and a frog eat praying mantis, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
If you thought sex was fatal because of the roulette of disease in our world today, consider the bazaar appreciation that a male praying mantis gets from his lover. Chalmers captures the strange "thank you" the female gives by devouring the male-head first. This book is a collectible and should be in your hands and library. Highly Recommended
Shocking, yet beautiful.......2000-05-15
This book contains stunning, yet extremely graphic photography which portrays animals, such as frogs, praying mantises, and tarantulas in mating dances, meeting their prey, and devouring fruit. While you can't say that "no animals were harmed in the making of this book" it is a book that brings you face-to-face with animals in their natural behavior. It is a wonderful book and is worth checking out.

In this volume Grice traces Kingston's development as a writer and cultural activist through both ethnic and feminist discourses, investigating her novels, occasional writings and her two-book "life-writing project."
