5 out of 5 stars A Life-changing Experience.......2007-06-14

I thought Casting Crowns' music was profound in the way that it asks Christians some hard questions. The music serves as a mirror into which Christians can look to see whether or not they are living their lives for Christ. Lifestories, Mark Hall's book, takes the music to an entirely new level. Mark, Casting Crowns' lead singer and main songwriter, tells the stories behind each song and gives the scriptures that correspond with each one. Mark provides questions at the end of each selection that can be used for personal growth or discussion purposes.

Mark is humble, authentic, and transparent in this book. He shares his own struggles, challenges, frustrations, and triumphs. I use this book with my Youth Group at church, and I also use it for a small group Bible study with about sixteen adults. Both groups absolutely LOVE the book. Lifestories has inspired all of us to allow the Holy Spirit to move more freely in us. It has encouraged us to show Christ to the world by the way we love His people.

Finally, I used to serve as one of my church's worship leaders, and I wish we had this book when I served in that capacity. If so, I might have been a much better worship leader and helped to usher our congregation into more authentic worship of the Almighty. Every Christian, worship leader or not, should read this book. It is written for believers of all ages, and it WILL change the way you interact with your Father, Savior, and all of His people!

5 out of 5 stars The music now has faces...........2007-03-30

This is an incredible book. After reading each chapter about a particular song, you have to stop and listen to the song before reading further. When I did this, I found that each song now has faces (that I imagined from the story) to go along with it. Mark Hall has impressed me greatly with his passion for youth ministry....he just happens to play a little music to go along with it.

5 out of 5 stars Challenges readers to truly pursue God.......2007-03-01

You are invited into someone's bedroom, and the door is shut behind you. That person takes out his journal and says, "Here. Read this. I want it to encourage you." This is the feeling given by the book Lifestories, written by Mark Hall, lead singer and songwriter for Casting Crowns.

Each chapter is the story of how a particular Casting Crown's song was written. At the end are questions to encourage the reader to dig more deeply into the truth Hall is sharing, and to apply it to his or her own life.

Hall's frankness and vulnerability with the struggles in his life make the book very relevant. Reading Lifestories feels like having coffee with an accountability partner who is encouraging you and spurring you on in your walk with Christ. It is also a very intimate experience.

The main theme of this book is passionate worship of God, not just on Sundays, but on every day of the week, throughout every moment. It challenges readers to pursue God in worship and love as a part of everyday life. Hall speaks of when he comes to church after a week of not pursuing God. He says he feels dried up and needy, like he is sapping life out from the sermon and worship. He then points out that Sunday mornings are a time to come to God with a heart full of worship after walking with God consistently the previous week.

Lifestories challenges its reader truly to pursue God -- to pursue loving Him and knowing Him. With its touching stories and open honesty, it points out the hand of God moving in and about everyday life. - Jenni Ritschard, Christian Book [...]

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and uplifting read.......2007-01-10

I bought this book for my husband for Christmas and we read it outloud as we traveled on vacation. It made us laugh and cry as Mark Hall recounted stories behind his songs. We were driving through Atlanta as we read the book and were tempted to stop and try to find Mark's church and let him know what an impact his book had on our family. We have always been fans but now we have a different insight to the message behind the lyrics. This is a must read - whether you have been a Casting Crowns fan before or not.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful and Inspirational.......2006-11-21

Lifestories is an inspiring collection of the stories behind several of the hit songs of Casting Crowns.

Anyone who is familiar with the music of Casting Crowns knows that it is very special or inspired even. When I first heard some of their songs, I was amazed by the lyrics as well as the music. Throughout this book one can tell that, even as great as the songs sound, that is not the sole aim. Mark Hall clearly states here that the focus in his songwriting efforts is the message and that the music is secondary.

Hall, who is the lead singer and songwriter for Casting Crowns, relates his struggles throughout the book. He has overcome both ADD and dyslexia to become one of the finest lyricists in Christian music. I was going to list the songs that I particularly enjoyed reading about the stories behind, but I found that I was listing pretty much every song featured in the book, so suffice it to say that the stories are great and very inspirational.

Some of Hall's points deserve special attention.

He states that God doesn't need him (or anyone else); He wants us.

He also does a section on the Prodigal Son and tells how he has been everyone in that story. As he goes through each role, readers will really relate to that.

Another one is that if I really believed that salvation is up to God (not me), I'd have no problem sharing my faith. He talks about how it is easy to think and say something, but that actions show what the real beliefs are. He further says: 'I can't save anybody'. So simple, but so true.

Although many of Hall's songs may feel like their stepping on toes of Christians (they are), he makes it clear that these are all issues that he is or has struggled through. He is very honest and very humble in his approach.

One part that shows how real his approach is when he talks about how aspiring artists talk to him about taking their ministry to the next level. He makes it clear that God puts people where he wants them and that they should not undervalue their current role and that they should use their talents through the whole journey and not focus too much on the destination.

I found this book to be very authentic and would recommend it to all fans of Casting Crowns as well as anyone who is interested in struggles that Christians face or just plain old inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Moved me beyond sexism.......2000-08-05

I loved this book. Nothing so far that I have read by or about men has moved me beyond my own sexism like the vulnerability that allowed me to touch the hearts and souls of the men who wrote the words in this book. It was this book that caused me to look beyond the feminist agenda to incorporate the amazing number of boys who have been sexually abused. You won't find statistics in this book. But it will make you want to look for them. Boy children are no safer than girl children in this world. Until we *get* that, divide-and-conquer dynamics will keep us from ever being able to do anything about it.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the emotional experience of male sexual abuse........1999-06-14

'Speaking our Truth' is just that. A compilation of survivor's suffering and ultimate victory over male sexual abuse. He's given a venue to tie many different stories into common denominators that helps men to understand they are not alone in this experience. A 'must have' for survivors and their partners in recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Speaking Our Truth is an eye opener.......1997-12-14

Even after I was able to start talking to a therapist about the abuse that I sufferred at the hands of a preist when I was 14 years old, I still was not able to truly accept that the abuse had actually happened to me. Neal King's collection of various men's uncensored accounts of their abuse and the feelings and descriptions of their struggles, gives any survivor of childhood abuse an opportunity to finally connect with the pain that affects every moment of our lives. When you feel like you may be ready to dance with your inner demons, this book is a perfect place to learn a few dance steps.

Book Description

“To raise a child while living with cancer is to have your heart break. We have to learn how to live with broken hearts.” So says one of the mothers interviewed in this powerful, inspirational, and deeply moving book, a tapestry of voices from ordinary women coping with every mother’s nightmare: a cancer diagnosis while raising children.

It’s difficult to imagine a group more in need of attention and support than seriously ill mothers. Yet, women confronting the profound collision of mothering and cancer struggle amidst a remarkable absence of services or resources. Another Morning bridges that gap. The stories are interwoven with the author’s personal and professional reflections, drawing on her 25 years as a public health educator specializing in maternal-child health, and her experience as a mother. She explores themes of universal interest and concern for mothers: What can we do to responsibly prepare ourselves and our young for life’s inevitable losses? Can a mother ever be seen as both strong and fallible, as a whole human being?

For mothers and all those who care about them, this book is an invaluable companion and source of comfort, full of insights, guidance, and real-world wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars The Meaning of Courage and Love.......2007-07-17

With dignity and eloquence, Linda Blachman tells the stories of mothers challenged by serious illness. What they reveal is a gift for everyone: sick and well, male and female, parents and non-parents. The mothers' passion, grief and wisdom elucidates the true meaning of courage and selfless love. I laughed and cried and, in the end, regretted leaving them.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read for Health Care Professionals.......2006-09-29

Another Morning is a very powerful, moving and inspiring book. As a retired manager of a radiation oncology center, I believe that this should be required reading for all health care professionals who work with mothers dealing with cancer while raising their children. I admire these mothers for their courage and the volunteers and Linda Blachman for their compassion.

5 out of 5 stars For Mind and Spirit.......2006-06-03

I was able to listen to Linda Blachman at an author reading in Menlo Park. I was struck with her personal history of dealing with pain and of being a mother while undergoing excruciating treatment for her ailments. Here is an author who can listen and convey empathy without being overbearing and who can transmit the stories of mothers, leaving their voices intact.
I am a Stage IV cancer patient with two boys, ages 8 and 11. I have long struggled with the knowledge of my imminent death and how to deal with my feelings of guilt over the abandonment of my kids. Even though I will leave a very caring and compentent father in the care, I still cannot shake my guilt over leaving them motherless. Linda's book has given me the stories of mothers in the same situation and feelings. It has been a great relief for me to find a place where I can find understanding for my own feelings. Linda's book has prompted me to work on my Ethical Will (I have, long ago, together with my husband, signed a Living Will) and to reflect on my own life story and my expectations for my children. Thank you Linda for one of the most worthewhile books I have ever had the pleasure to read!

5 out of 5 stars An author who knows how to handle darkness.......2006-05-01

Linda Blachman has done an amazing job of putting together deeply moving stories of mothers who have cancer. There are so few people in the field who can sit with darkness without trying to making it all better, who sit in unblinking compassion with the pain and unfairness of life.

Ms. Blachman was equal to her subject in its profundity, depth, nuances, subtleties. Her voice in the book was the perfect witness to the stories that were told: she framed them, held them, and enhanced them through her comments. She weaved the stories into a meaningful narrative, just as each story itself was a meaningful narrative. All this was done with great insight, sensitivity, generosity of spirit, respect and psychological sophistication.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Listening.......2006-04-14

I have given copies of this book to two friends with recurrent breast cancer and am recommending it to all my friends who DON'T have cancer. Over 20 years ago, Linda Blachman and I were in a post partum support group together. This was one of the first places I experienced the healing that comes from talking to others who were genuinely LISTENING. When I read this book, I was struck by two things: 1) the honesty and emotional depth of the women dealing with questions of life and death that we all face, and 2) the masterful listening of Linda and her project volunteers, who opened themselves to hear the stories beneath the stories. This book has much to give to anyone who is willing to listen.

Book Description

"This vivid and moving book will help shape the emerging form of truth commissions in many places around the world." --James Boyd White, author of The Edge of Meaning Although many praise the work of truth commissions for empowering and healing through words rather than violence, some condemn the practice as a poor substitute for traditional justice, achieved through trials and punishment. There has been until now little analysis of the unarticulated claim that underlies the truth commissions' very existence: that language--in this case narrative stories--can substitute for violence. Acknowledging revenge as a real and deep human need, Shattered Voices explores the benefits and problems inherent when a fragile country seeks to heal its victims without risking its own future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars healing words.......2004-09-19

Phelps skillful conflation of an international history, philosophy, law, and literature persuasively argues that truth commissions contribute to personal and public healing and resist the cycle of retributive vengeance. Shattered Voices should be read by all who fear the consequences of existing hostilities in Bosnia, Iraq, and Sudan as well as those who consider language and storytelling as markers of civilization and essential to justice.

5 out of 5 stars revenge and storytelling.......2004-06-26

An excellent book. Phelps restores the desire for revenge to a natural place within the human psyche. But then she explores alternatives to violence as ways of accommodating this basic human need. She is remarkably adept at exploring storytelling as a means of satisfying the need for revenge, particularly in relationship to social justice. Her range of reference in these arguments is amazing. Relying on history, psychology, philosophy, and literature, she creates a very rich read, full of ideas and insights. You keep stopping to rethink things you thought you already knew.
If you think there's no reason for hope because of all the violence in the world, give this book a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Well-reasoned and incisive critique of religious pluralism.......2001-06-07

After reading several different popular level works that deal with the relation of Christianity to other religions, I finally found a good book. This book gave substantive descriptions of different religions and their various claims avoiding charges of caricature.

To define the terms:

Christian exclusivism: exclusivism maintains that the central claims of Christianity are true, and that where the claims of Christianity conflict with those of other religions, the latter are to be rejected as false. (page 9)

Religious pluralism: God is said to be actively revealing himself in all religious traditions. (page 10) All religions are in their own way complex historically and culturally conditioned human responses to the same divine reality. (page 26)

This book discusses religious pluralism and if it is rational and so on. One of the book's great strengths is the recognition that the religions of the world say basically different or contradictory things about three vital religious topics: the nature of the religious ultimate (e.g. Allah, The Holy Trinity, Krishna, Nirvana, Brahman etc..), the nature of the human predicament (e.g. rebellion against a holy and righteous God, ignorance, being locked into a continuous state of reincarnation).

To summarize Netland shows that regarding all religions as the same or saying the same thing requires significant distortion of or radical alternation of the defining beliefs (the beliefs which are essential to any religion being true). The other approach the pluralists use is to argue that these religions do not intend to make ontological claims (or claims about reality) but rather they are mythical, meaningful constructs. At best, this distorts what Buddhists, Christians, Jews, Muslims and others believe.

Two chapters in particular were outstanding in the book:

(4) Religion and Truth

(5) Evaluation Religious Traditions

In (4), Netland looks at the views of liberal contemporary theologians and how they view religious truth. He summarizes the views of many theologians in these two propositions: (1) Personal truth can legitimately be applied to religion whereas propositional truth cannot. (2) Both personal truth and propositional truth can be applied to religion, but personal truth is somehow more basic and fundamental than propositional truth. (page 129)

Netland shows the inadequacy of both of these views. Further on in the same chapter, Netland shows the problems with the ineffable thesis, which asserts that the religious truth is inexpressible or put another way, "Beliefs and doctrines are just inadequate pointers toward what cannot be articulated." (page 133). A modified version of the ineffable thesis is the via negativa which asserts that only negative statements can be made about God (e.g. God is not physical. God is not evil. God is not of limited intelligence. etc). However, to use this method implies that one has positive knowledge about God by which one knows that the negative statements are indeed true.

Then there is the "two-level" conception of truth. This asserts that there is one level of truth (e.g. scientific knowledge, mathematics and philosophical reasoning), which is subject to logic, and then there is the "higher" level of truth, which is not subject to logic. However, in making this assertion, logic is used. The statement, "Logic does not apply to religion," necessarily implies that the contradiction of that statement, "Logic does apply to religion," is false.

Chapter (5) offers 12 criteria by which one can evaluate the TRUTH of a given religious tradition. Netland prefaces this analysis that it is not comprehensive but that it serves as a significant starting point. I wish this chapter were available in small booklet; it is excellent.

The last chapter discusses the ideas of evangelism, dialogue and tolerance. Netland distinguishes between several different forms of dialogue; at a simple level, this simply means coming together to understand one another. However, there are forms of dialogue, which are unacceptable to evangelicals.

This book is one of the best out there. There are extensive footnotes whereby Netland refers the reader to explore topics (such as the objectivity of morality) that space prohibits extensive discussion of. For the person who asserts that all religions teach the same thing or that all religions lead to the same place, submit that belief to logic. This book shows how to do that. For Christians who affirm Christian exclusivism, this book will be of great benefit in defending one of the most hotly debated topics in society.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to the questions of religious pluralism.......1999-06-19

I read the original Eerdman's edition of this book from 1991, and have used it several times in classes on Religious Pluralism at Denver Seminary. It is a well-written, informed, and philosophical treatment. It nicely summarizes the world views of several major religions without caricature. Prof. Netland's critique of John Hick's theories are particularly penetrating. I'm very happy to see this book back in print. It makes an excellent textbook in philosophy and religious studies courses.

Be sure to read his follow-up work as well, Encountering Religious Pluralism (InterVarsity, 2001), which is similarly superb.

Together they represent the entire spectrum of Buddhist tradition.

Thought-provoking and passionate, Dharma, Color, and Culture forges a new path in our understanding of the simple truths of Buddhism and their relevance for all of us. Essays by Latino, Asian, African-American, and Native American Buddhist practitioners, lay people, and Dharma teachers address the connection between diversity, racism, and Buddhism at four levels: the personal, the interpersonal, the institutional, and the cultural. Recognizing that attention to the pain of racism is essential, the overarching theme of this work is how the Dharma becomes an effective antidote to the suffering and a vehicle for healing and liberation.

5 out of 5 stars An anthology of twenty-six essays .......2005-02-13

Dharma, Color, And Culture is an anthology of twenty-six essays by Buddhist practitioners of color, including Latino, Asian, Asian American, African American, and Native American authors such as Maxine Hong Kingston, Charles Johnson, Thich Nhat Hanh and more. The common theme of all writings centers upon how tenets and traditions of Buddhism revealed a path to the cessation of suffering. Firsthand accounts by skilled writers about the discovery of spiritual truth, the long road to finding balance, and the obstacles to maintaining and sharing insights into an unpredictable world make Dharma, Color And Culture a welcome contribution to Buddhist studies reading lists.

    Book Description

In the midst of his distinguished law school career, James Starrs made an extraordinary leap into the politically fraught, physically arduous business of actually exhuming bodies to solve cold cases that have defied answers for years. Helped by cutting-edge technology as well as the forensic science he had been teaching for decades, he has made important discoveries. These fascinating revelations are dramatically chronicled in A Voice for the Dead.

Starrs's passionate intention is to set the record straight, to right the wrongs done by tall tales and cover-ups, by even the most cherished historical legends. Among the high-profile cases he writes about are Jesse James-are the remains buried in his purported grave really Jesse's? Mary Sullivan-was she, as supposed, a victim of Albert DeSalvo, who confessed, perhaps falsely, to being the Boston Strangler? And the Cold War government scientist who fell to his death from a high floor of a New York hotel-did he jump or was he pushed?

1 out of 5 stars There is a reason why this books sells NEW for one penny!.......2007-03-09

"A voice for the dead"is among the most self-centered,egotistical memoirs I have ever encountered.James E.Starrs, professor of law at George Washington university in Washington,D.C.leaves no doubt that,in his mind at least,he is the very center of the known universe, and that whatever"findings"he may turn up should stand forever and ever,as the very last and final word on the cases involved.Starrs, whose ego apparently knows no limitations, has had this work ghost-written by Katherine Ramsland, which has only added to the over-all negative effect, inasmuchasd Ramsland is a writer best known for the quantity of her output rather than its quality...
In this book,Starrs claims to give the final word on purported 19th century "cannibal"Alfred Packer.claims to have solved all of the mystery surrounding the assassination of Huey Long(and especially the mystery surrounding his alledged assassin,Dr.Carl Weiss),includes a disputatious chapter concerning the "Boston Strangler",and gives his opinion as to who is buried in the grave assigned to notorious 19th century western villian Jesse James...I am surprised that Starrs has not also laid claim to knowledge regarding the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa,or the exact date of the second coming of Jesus Christ, but these"mysteries"and more may yet turn up in some future Starrs volume...
Personally,I do not believe a word of anything that I read in this book...Starrs,and his co-author Ramsland, have presented us with an arrogant memoir..Nothing is as "final"as Starrs investigations claim to be...A touch of humility,an admission that error is always possible, these would have gone a long, long way in making this work palatable..as it is neither is in evidence...
The cases involved are of an historic nature, and ,as they are not run-of-the-mill,"ordinary",or anonymous, one would think that, even despite the professor's over-whelming case of ego, they might still be interesting..WRONG !With Starrs, the mysteries themselves take a back-seat to his cocksure prouncements regarding them.
So,in the end, this book is about self-aggrandizement,with C.S.I.-style forensic science taking a very, very secondary role.

    4 out of 5 stars A pleasant read.......2007-01-22

I would say that this book was fun to read from a historical and investigative perspective. Stretches of the book can become a bit tedious when Starrs goes through the legal proceedings, etc. in an attempt to give us all the background. However, I read it all the way through and for the most part was thoroughly entertained. Especially interesting, I thought, was the chapter detailing the "suicide" that was really the murder of a CIA agent in a fall from a ten story hotel room (or so Starrs argues).

I would recommend reading a chapter or two and if it interests you proceed. The good thing is you don't have to read the whole thing if you don't have time, but can instead read any of the cases that may interest you in particular.

1 out of 5 stars Elvis is dead, and so is Starrs' prose.......2006-06-29

James Starrs co-wrote Scientific Evidence in Civil and Criminal Cases, one of the standard single volume reference books in the field. His talents as a memoirist, however, are limited. Voice For The Dead is filled with wooden dialogue and overused metaphors.

Every chapter begins with one or two epigrams, presumably in order to place Starrs' erudition on display. An epigram should serve as a sort of lodestar to guide the reader toward the author's way of thinking. But Starrs trots out some real warhorses, such as, "The evil that men do lives after them,"
from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Countless thousands of English 101 students have used that quote as an epigram for their essays; it tells us nothing special about what Starrs does for a living.

Starrs has a tin ear for dialogue. Even in a clinical discussion, I doubt a forensic scientist would say, in one breath, "...the dead prospectors were all buried in the vicinity of Lake City in spite of a large body of opinion insisting even to this day that they had been interred miles away on the shores of Lake San Cristobel, the terminus of the Gunnison River."

Try saying that, out loud, in a conversational tone.

Starrs tells us about the "legend" about him in his academic circles. He mentions accomplishments outside of forensic science. (Apparently he "bicycled across the breadth of the United States..." Rephrasing it as simply, "bicycled across the United States," would be less redundant, not to mention less florrid.)

Starrs' has failed to notice that the prose style found in 19th century novels doesn't work so well in a 21st professional memoir. Forensic science, since TV's CSI shows became popular, is a topic more people want to read about. But there are other recent books on the subject whose authors seem less self-satisfied about their accomplishments, and more aware that they are writing, not for themselves, but for a 21st century readership.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Well-Written Book!.......2006-05-03

What a page-turner this is! The main theme in the six chapters of this book is the exhumation of human remains to help settle controversial issues, most of which are of historical value. The book is written in such an engaging style that the pages turn themselves. The cases discussed range from early nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. Although forensic techniques are discussed to an adequate degree, they are not belabored at the expense of other equally important details; thus, the reader is presented with well-balanced information that helps in establishing a good overall perspective of each case. The book's forte is really in the logical and suspenseful way in which each case is developed and presented. At the end, one is left with the feeling of wanting still more cold cases to read about. This excellent work would be of great interest to those who enjoy literature on true crime, history, forensics and unsolved mysteries.

    4 out of 5 stars Better Than I Expected.......2006-01-18

After reading some of the other reviews, I almost bailed on buying this book. However, I'm glad I got it. I agree that the writing style and vocabulary is sometimes annoying, and that the author has a giant ego. But it was a good read.

      Book Description

What was life really like in German-occupied France during the Second World War? Douglas Boyd paints the clearest picture yet, using previously unpublished first-person accounts of ordinary men and women who lived through this extraordinary and dangerous time, when a few made fortunes, but most went cold and hungry. Less than 1 percent of the French were pro-German. Is it pure coincidence that the same percentage actively resisted the Germans despite knowing that, if caught, their husbands, wives and children were considered equally culpable under the brutal Teutonic principle of Sippenhaft – guilt by association? Using new, meticulously researched material, Douglas Boyd tells an enthralling and sometimes chilling narrative history of the Occupation, as lived by the French people. It is a record of great heroism and ultimate cruelty. Read it and ask yourself, "How would I have reacted, living in Occupied France?" The answer may surprise you.
