Book Description

A decade after publication of his best-selling book, Barth returns to the schoolhouse. Drawing from a career committed to building schools rich in community, learning, and leadership, he shows how to accomplish the most difficult task of school reform-transforming a school's culture so that it will be hospitable to human learning. In an engaging conversational style, he suggests how school people can become the architects, engineers, and designers of their own schools-and of their own destinies.

Download Description

"In a very large chorus of proponents of school reform, Roland Barth's voice stands out. As usual, his grounded wisdom makes so much sense. He rightfully puts the locus for improvement in the hands of teachers and principals. He outlines some ideas for creating a community of learners at the local level. He shares some fresh thoughts for developing educational leaders-teachers and principals. But most important, he restores the zest and sacredness of learning-the heart of education." --Terrence E. Deal, Irving Melbo Professor, Rossier School, University of Southern California

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent book for a teacher looking for inspiration to new heights in the profession. Barth, while at times a bit unrealistic, strikes at the heart of what teachers need to understand about leardership and how to tap this resource within ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars Continual Learning.......2006-11-13

Barth shares the need for experiential learning, craft knowledge and reflection. He encourages the leader to participate in self-renewal by creating a team of followers through a process of decentralization. A connection between learning and leading is established to increase commitment by working towards changing the mindset of others.
The book reemphasized the true need for collaboration and cooperation, as both are instrumental in the change process for campus improvement. Decision making by all parties increased the opportunity for more diverse ideas. Barth discussed the concept of "craft knowledge" or individual expertise that teachers possessed. Professionals brought with them their "massive collection of experiences." Efforts were made to ensure these rich sources were shared and not kept behind classroom doors. As a practicing educator, I found aspects of Barth's book informative and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-02-19

Completely inspiring! Barth has a way of connecting to the hearts and minds of both educators and policymakers. The tension that exists between those involved in policy, and those within schools should be discussed openly, as it is here.

He opens with a Robert Frost quote that sums up the role of the educator (or should!): "What is done is done for the love of it--or not really done at all." If we love children and schools enough we'll take time to listen to some of the suggestions in this book, and others like it.

The chapter I liked best was chapter six, "Craft Knowledge". Craft knowledge, as Barth defines it, is the "massive collection of experiences and learnings that those who live and work under the roof of the schoolhouse inevitably accrue during their careers". It's important for Ed researchers, policymakers, and educators to make full use of these insights.

I am in grad school for Sec. Ed./ Ed policy, and this has been perhaps the best book I've read so far. It's a quick read, and helps spark your passion for many issues relating to education.

4 out of 5 stars Learning By Heart.......2003-06-21

In this eloquent and simple book, Barth takes on nearly every recent discussion relevant to schools, change, and leadership. He tackles school culture, the learning community, learning, instruction, reflective practice, teacher leadership, barriers to change, risk, and vision. While Barth's subjects are complex, his treatment is simple, and it is for this reason that the book deserves a place on the shelf of every educator and school leader. Barth's achieves simplicity by addressing one key question: How do we make our schools work better? Barth believes first and foremost that schools are capable of improving themselves. Learning and change should come from the heart - the inside - not from government, think tanks, or top-down policies. Learning and change (Barth would probably argue that these two processes are virtually synonymous) require resolve, perseverance, and a willingness to take risks.

Why don't our schools work better? Barth writes that educators themselves have not learned to learn by heart. Educators have become passive recipients of their school cultures instead of active culture-makers. Barth argues that educators must understand their school cultures (to do this, Barth offers plenty of advice) by making discussible the three great nondiscussibles: (1) Principal leadership (2) The way decisions get made, and (3) Race and performance. Having the hard conversations requires the creation and nurturing of a community of learners. How can we create a culture hospitable to learning, if the adults haven't created such a culture for themselves? How do we know if we're still learning? "Once our practice is committed to a folder, once routinization and repetition replace invention, learning curves plummet." (p.22)

Barth questions the traditional "transmission of knowledge model", which he believes remains a pedagogical cornerstone of much instruction. (Here, my sense is that he's mainly critiquing the high school, which, in this book and others about change, seems to be the unacknowledged subject. Why do educational change theorists take on the entire educational process, when it seems that many of the problems they describe are principally endemic to high schools? Why are high school educators so loath to learn from the practices of their colleagues in the elementary and middle schools?) He advocates the experiential model of learning - a constructivist framework. To transform instruction, we need to start having conversations about what we know and how we teach. To have those conversations, we need to put reflection at the center of our practice. Barth's chapter on reflection is the fulcrum on which the other chapters balance. There, Barth urges educators to write, share, and talk. (As a lifelong learner himself, Barth doesn't shy away from self-critique. In this chapter and others, he models reflective practice by sharing with the reader mistakes and misperceptions from his own life as an educator.)

Barth argues forcefully for a more dispersed leadership model than traditional schools have been inclined to embrace. Schools with high achievement rates and low discipline rates typically involve teachers in the most important decisions that affect the school. Teacher leaders are made through reflection and learning. (For those teachers who can't "see" how to do this, Barth offers lots of practical advice on how overcome the impediments and embrace new learning and leadership opportunities.) Teacher leaders likewise will not emerge unless principals cultivate a culture in which people learn and lead. Collaboration and dialogue are certainly two of Barth's most prized values: "The relationship among adults in the schoolhouse has more impact on the quality and the character of the school - and on the accomplishment of youngsters - than any other factor." (p.105) Principals who are territorial, play favorites, and keep their friends closer than their enemies are destined to perpetuate a culture that nurtures repetition instead of learning and maintenance instead of change. Among other things, school leaders must provide opportunity for teachers to get out of the class to pursue their learning, they must provide financial support, and most importantly, encourage risk-taking.

What do school groups need? To improve performance, school groups need group process skills, consensus-building skills, knowledge about how to utilize resources, the capacity to plan and evaluate their work. The primary impediment to school improvement is that too often schools play not to lose instead of playing to win. Schools and educators have become risk-averse. Educators will never overcome this aversion unless we learn to learn together. To do this, there needs to be enough leaders among us, who are willing to learn, share and support. In this book, not only is there plenty to reflect on, but also lots of material for the reader looking for the practical pieces to begin to affect change and improvement.

3 out of 5 stars This Lighthouse Needs More Oil.......2003-01-16

The school is not an island, yet Roland Barth would have it be one replete with his ill-advised lighthouse metaphor. Barth correctly focuses on school culture as one critical component of school success, but unwittingly poisons the idea with disparaging and gratuitous remarks about "imperious central office staff" and his "fantasies" of a school with no parents! A school's culture is the sum of the whole and cannot exclude other stakeholders. Barth offers nothing inherently new or visionary in this book, best evidenced by his statement, "I believe that schools are lighthouses." Does he mean they are immovable or beacons of light? Historical relics or valuable real estate ripe for redevelopment? Barth promotes continued learning by the faculty, but especially the principal. This is hardly an earth-shaking new idea. Barth challenges the reader to be a risk taker and for principals to promote risk taking. Again, a valid cliche, but not enlightening. This lighthouse needs more oil.

    Book Description

"Roland S. Barth's warm and wise book deserves to be kept close at hand. Witty, entertaining, instructive, and poignant, Barth's stories will get you thinking, and the 'working rules' salted throughout the book will help you navigate the deceptive shoals and powerful tides we all have to deal with at work."
Lee G. Bolman, Marion Bloch/Missouri Chair in Leadership
    University of Missouri-Kansas City
Author of Leading With Soul and Reframing the Path to School Leadership

Lessons Learned is an insightful, funny, moving look at commonalties between life at sea and life in the schoolhouse. More than any other Barth book, this one exposes Roland for what he really is—an avid sailor, loyal friend, life-long learner, and compassionate leader."
    Milli Pierce, Director
The Principals’ Center, Harvard Graduate School of Education

"This charming, humorous, and wise book teaches important lessons about relationships at work and at play. Once again, Barth has written a useful and invaluable book for teachers and principals alike."
Thomas J. Sergiovanni, Lillian Radford Professor of Education
    Trinity University
Author of The Lifeworld of Leadership

"Barth's Lessons Learned is a powerful guide for defining the types of interpersonal relationships needed to bring about success."
    Karen M. Dyer, Manager
Education Sector, Center for Creative Leadership
    Author of The Intuitive Principal

In Lessons Learned , Roland S. Barth shares his often whimsical, but always thoughtful, reflections on relationships at sea and in the workplace. Drawing on his 40 years of experience on deck and in the schoolhouse, Barth shows us that these two worlds have more in common than we might expect—and that there is much to be learned about getting along with one another from both.

Our day-to-day exchanges with others are central to how we experience and perform in the workplace. Everyone wants to be a member of a high-performing team, be an effective leader, and work in an enlightened and empowering culture. Barth’s seemingly simple stories of interactions among colleagues and companions provide rich, humorous, and often poignant insights into the subtlety and complexity of human relationships that shape teams and leaders. The resulting "rules" provide a practical and delightfully conversational guide to cultivating and fortifying working relationships.

Some lessons learned are obvious, others less so. Most of all, Barth provides a backdrop that invites us to reflect on our own stories so that we may better understand our own "lessons learned."

4 out of 5 stars Sail into effective leadership with this book!.......2003-08-21

This book is a must read for all educational or business leaders. Barth's wit and stories make this book an enjoyable quick read. Personable and telling, his timeless wisdom and experience combine to create a book you'll want to consult time and again.

In an age when educational success is measured solely by "high-stakes testing", Roland Barth helps leaders keep centered on what really matters-people. Written primarily for educational leaders, business leaders will find this book helpful too.

This is a book about transforming and maintaining a nurturing and productive workplace, be it the classroom or boardroom. Much of the hype in leadership literature today hinges on acquiring new strategies or adopting new methodology. Lessons Learned is different. The advice offered to leaders in this book is practical and unchanging-focusing on developing quality relationships in the workplace.

Barth's use of anecdotes and his command of language is riveting. The book's twenty-four short chapters can easily be read in several hours, but you'll spend a lifetime practicing the wisdom offered by this sailor and educator. If you only read one book this year, make it this one!

    Book Description

Nagios: System and Network Monitoring shows how to configure and use Nagios, an open source system and network monitoring tool. Nagios makes it possible to continuously monitor network services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, PING, etc.), host resources (processor load, disk and memory usage, running processes, log files, etc.), and environmental factors (such as temperature). When Nagios detects a problem, it communicates the information to the sys admin via email, pager, SMS, or other user-defined method; current status information, historical logs, and reports can also be accessed via a web browser. Nagios System and Network Monitoring covers the Nagios core, all standard Nagios plug-ins and selected third-party plug-ins, and shows readers how to write their own plug-ins. The book covers Nagios 2.0 and is backwards compatible with earlier versions.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Best for Nagios admins who want specific details on plug-ins.......2006-09-04

I recently received review copies of Pro Nagios 2.0 (PN2) by James Turnbull and Nagios: System and Network Monitoring (NSANM) by Wolfgang Barth. I read PN2 first, then NSANM. Both are excellent books, but I expect potential readers want to know which is best for them. The following is a radical simplification, and I could honestly recommend readers buy either (or both) books. If you are completely new to Nagios and want a very well-organized introduction, I recommend PN2. If you are somewhat familiar with Nagios and want detailed descriptions of a wide variety of Nagios plug-ins, I recommend NSANM.

NSANM strengths lie in the depth of coverage of certain elements when compared to PN2. PN2 devotes 7 pages to host checks, while NSANM's Ch 7 offers 21 pages. PN2 supplies 8 pages on service checks, but NSANM's Ch 6 gives 46 pages. This level of detail can be very useful. For example, NSANM's explanation of check_squid also shows to to configure Sguid to allow access to its cache manager.

NSANM shares more information on certain background protocols like SNMP. PN2's SNMP section is about 7 pages, whereas NSANM's Ch 11 is 36 pages. NSANM demonstrates more aspects of Nagios' Web interface and the CGI programs generating pages. I thought author Wolfgang Barth made very effective use of diagrams, like the network topology explanation in Ch 4, the service checks in Ch 5, and notification in Ch 12.

NSANM includes some material not mentioned in PN2, like using Nagios with Cygwin. Sometimes the books are very complementary, as shown by PN2's discussion of NSClient++ and NSANM's overview of NSClient and NC_Net.

NSANM is lacking coverage of security, redundancy, and failover, however. PN2 does address these critical issues. Beware the some of the "chapters" in NSANM are very short -- like Ch 8 (2 pages!) and Ch 19 (barely 6 pages). I think short sections like those should have been integrated into longer chapters or moved into the appendices.

Overall, NSANM is a very good book. I believe new Nagios readers should read PN2, and strongly consider NSANM as a complementary reference volume.

    70+ plugins described !!
    464 pages

The book (in a typical No Starch Press style) gives a clear, concise rundown about Nagios in general.
As such it is a well written and sound introduction to the Nagios topic.

After having read No Starch*s Nagios book you will know exactly how Nagios works inside.
The thorough explanations, flow charts and many tips and tricks leave no doubt that after you
finished the book you know your way around any Nagios installation.

What is remarkable is, that even though the Nagios topic is fairly young, the authors manage
to describe more than 70+ plugins. !!

One of the features of this book was for me basically a new level of "Usability" - or should I
say "reading quality" ? The text contains virtually "links" to related or refered to sections in
other chapters. That allows the reader to quickly jump back and forth to follow up on something.
A BIG time-saver and from my point of view much appreciated.

Beginners or junior system administrators will find No Starch's Nagios book an excellent choice.
It doesnt come with all the latest bells and whistles but it certainly covers more than 80% of
what the average joe sysadmin needs to know.

    Book Description

This volume provides a much-needed English translation of the sixth edition of what is considered the fundamental text for fully understanding Barthianism. Barth--who remains a powerful influence on European and American theology--argues that the modern Christian preacher and theologian face the same basic problems that confronted Paul. Assessing the whole Protestant argument in relation to modern attitudes and problems, he focuses on topics such as Biblical exegesis; the interrelationship between theology, the Church, and religious experience; the relevance of the truth of the Bible to culture; and what preachers should preach.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An exhausting read.......2007-04-19

The way to tackle this book is first not to expect an easy read in the way of a 'companion read to Paul's Epistle to the Romans'. This is stuff for theologians. I have to admit that it was way above me. All I could rescue from its doomed oblivion were some quotations here and there. I think the first and second above reviewers give a good account of it: this is a break-up with liberal evangelicalism; it's no "make-you-feel-good" religion. I suppose it meant a lot by the time it was published; today we might take it for granted.

He points out, as Luther did, the "kernel" of the whole Epistle: "For there is no distinction: for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (3:23)

On sin: "Precisely when we recognize that we are sinners do we perceive that we are brothers."

Works vs Faith: "So long as we are swayed by any other motive except faith, we do not stand before God."

5 out of 5 stars The book that started the modern evangelical movement?.......2006-08-20

That's how Barth's Epistle to the Romans has been described.

Denominationalism was a hallmark of mid-20th century theology ... high on morality, fuzzy on the Way.

I tried this book after seeing it referred to in other texts where it was described as initiating a fundamental shift from moral sermonizing to Biblical based teachings.

The first chapter of Barth's Epistle to the Romans will reveal the `back to basics' rationale for Church. Barth simply dissects Romans. Rome was a desperate church that Paul kept alive, under extreme persecution through `back to basics' teaching. Barth takes modern readers back to the fundamentals that Paul uses to strengthen the Romans.

Barth's Romans revisit was apparently highly controversial when written. Barth's strong commentary of Paul's letter jumps from the pages. Barth's interpretations leave little wiggle room to debate anything but the straight up interpretation of Paul's letter.

5 out of 5 stars Musings on Karl Barth.......2006-03-03

Barth gives an intense view of Paul's Epistles to the Romans. Some background is needed to read and understand such as reading the Epistles and comparing your own thoughts on it. It is well written, and a good basis for reading further.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2005-03-14

Disenchanted with the gluttony of Evangelicalism and angry at its souless theology which I had studied for four years, I happened upon Barth's manifesto and was reborn. The reason I didn't read it in seminary was because the gaping holes in Evangelical theology today roughly equivocate to the same holes prevalent in 19th Century Liberalism: subjectivistic interpretation of Scripture, self-centered worship, and cultural syncretism.

If you want strong theology written in prose that can only be compared to listening to Master of Puppets, I heartily suggest this book. If you prefer Celine Dion, you might want to try someone else...maybe Max Lucado.

"The Gospel is not a religious message to inform mankind of their divinity or to tell them how they may become divine. The Gospel proclaims a God utterly distinct from men." KB, Epistle to the Romans, p. 28.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most important modern religious works........1999-02-28

This is the book that brought an end to 19th century liberal theology's attempt to produce a neat synthesis of Christianity and culture, a psychological Christianity or an anthropologized Christianity. The project was a failure, and Barth tells us why and what should replace it -- a religionless Christianity? Not really a Biblical commentary. If you're looking for an exposition of the text, this isn't what you want. It's more like a manifesto, using Paul's epistle to the Romans as a place to begin the attack on cultural, non-prophetic Christianity. Written in a dialectical, highly expressive style. If you like Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, this is your kind of theologizing -- with a hammer. It can be exhausting, and you will either love it or hate it. Barth later changed his style and tone, but not his message.

    4 out of 5 stars Authenticity in Kelty's Photographs.......2006-08-04

As the son of a former circus (Ringling Brothers, Al G. Barnes, et al) employee who has a Kelty photograph of his father in a circus from 1936, who himself took photos during his time in the circus, I found the Kelty photographs captured much of the same ambience as in my father's pictures. In other words, authenticity and poignancy.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for circus fans.......2006-04-07

If you wish you could go back in time to golden age of the circus (as I do), this book will at least make you feel a little closer. Kelty's photos are awesome considering the technology of the day and the prints look amazing!

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2004-03-28

Though this is a large book, you will probably finish reading it in one evening. The only text is a breezy 34 page introduction, with accompanying pictures. The rest of the book is mostly full-page pictures with very minimal captions. At least half the time, the captions are no more than what is already written on the original picture - it makes me think that the authors (presumably Barth & Siegel, though there is no text by them, the introduction was written by Edward Hoagland) were told that a published book has to caption the pictures, so they did the minimum amount of work necessary. For the pictures without information written on them, the captions consist of a year and a location, circus or performance house...very minimal!

Though the introduction is a very nice read, it has no depth and skips all over the place, to wherever Mr. Hoagland thought to go next. It talks a little about some of the pictures, a little about Mr. Kelty, the circuses, the times and the challenges faced. This leaves the reader to look at the pictures and take them for face value, just like the people who came to the circus in the 30's. We have no background information, no introduction, and no inside information - all we can do is "stare at the freaks". I believe that is really the point of the book. Though I have no first-person reference, as the advertisement in the Introduction says:

"We have the fattest women in the world, and the tallest man, and a girl who has no arms or legs, and midgets who are married! Have you ever seen a camel spit, or seals play catch, or elephants stand on their heads? A man with reptile scales who was once just like you! And the Good Lord made him. Can you finish your ice cream after you have looked at him?"...Good question!

Looking at these pictures, I get an appreciation for the time and people. Cameras are new, and each picture is clearly an "Event". There are people who are very disturbing, some who are merely trying to disturb you, and others who just don't give a damn. Some of the people are no more weird than what you would find in any large city, others seem clearly different. Through the pictures, I get an appreciation for the packaging of weirdness.

Though you could peruse the pictures quickly, and laugh like the people who originally went to the circus; I was left with questions about what these pictures say about these people, and about the people who watched them. What do these pictures say about America, back then and today? This book has provided food for thought for me. I am divided on whether I wanted more of the back-story, or if the pictures tell their own story. No book can be everything so, since I am still thinking about these pictures, for me the book was a success. For people who want to know more, this book would make a good accompaniment to a more scholarly work.

3 out of 5 stars Photography gets an A, Copy gets a C.......2003-01-03

Although it is fascinating seeing the photographs of Edward Kelty, the author of the book has done nothing to contribute to the knowledge to be gained here. Surprisingly, the captions list nothing except the words that are printed on the photographs themselves. Here you have some of the most amazing "Special People" of all times, and none of them are identified unless it was written on the photo. It is not a mystery who most of these people were if the author had bothered to ask any of the wonderful resources he cites. I have only read one other book (out of print)- "Very Special People" and many of them are identifiable from that book alone.

Edward Hoagland's intro is also a disappointment. Although he says he spent some time working in the world portrayed, I find it hard to believe that all the people therein were either pedophiles, itinerants and other seedy stereotypes to which he alludes. Many were lovely, talented people who overcame incredible hardship and handicaps and had optimistic and positive outlooks beyond belief.

What this book needs are carefully researched captions and an index - perhaps someone truly familiar with the subject will write one. As interesting as the photos are, the book shows a lack of respect for the photographer and the people he photographed.

    3 out of 5 stars A LIFE CHANGING READ.......2007-05-29

Growing up in Northern Virginia I always had a vague sense of the crab's popularity, both for dining and as a sort of a local mascot for people who live near the Bay. However, I had only eaten them at my aunt's house in Benedict, MD. and thought them to be strange and hard to eat. They made me feel inferior some how not knowing the technique and how exactly my aunt was able to come up with these bushels during the warm summer months. I dedicated last summer to learning all about the Bay and the blue crab and the wonderful people who make a living off them. I was transformed with the knowledge from the book that explains so many details about the life of the crab, the watermen and their families. The author is so creative with the insights he reveals. After reading this book, I am equipped to speak intelligently about the geographical areas, crab industry and most importantly-how to get and eat these beautiful swimmers!

3 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail.......2006-06-03

Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much. I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced. Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Swimmers.......2005-08-18

Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Often, environmental writers stand the risk of in a way reducing the Bay to merely some sort of ecological experiment. Some I have read do not take into account that every little change in the Bay, whether the fault of Mother Nature or ourselves, drastically affects the people whose entire livelihood is fished out of these waters. Fortunately, the author(s) of Beautiful Swimmers does not fall into that trap.
The Watermen have a unique love affair with the Blue Crab. As evidenced by my own home town's "Hard Crab Derby" celebration ever year. This book, I think, gives a very fair and honest portrayal of these seemingly simple people with seemingly simple lives. Its handling of carcinological matters is anything but boring, including an in-detail description of how the crabs make love.
I would highly suggest this work not only for its informative value but for its treatment of the inherant poetry and beauty of the Bay. Even at the time of its publishing, the downward trend in the Bay's health was growing more evident. Today the situation is even more precarious, and requires a very delicate balance between the health of the Bay that supports so many and the people themselves, whose lives have been spent gleaning from these once bountiful waters an income, and who keep alive the traditions of Watermen from over four centuries ago.
Let us protect the Bay, this precious resource of ours, but we must not forget about the people.

Once again, an exceptional book, and one that I recommend for anyone interested in the Conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that depend upon it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational.......2005-01-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know. I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened. The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written.

5 out of 5 stars It Takes You There...........2004-11-16

Beautiful Swimmers will make you feel like you are a part of growing up in the Chesapeake Bay region. If you already did so, it will bring you back home.

Beautiful Swimmers serves as excellent literature for a multitude of readers: naturalists, historians, travellers, and folks who enjoy reading a good novel. It also provides a good blend of natural and cultural resource history.

I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area (Deale, MD) several years ago and was referred to Beautiful Swimmers by several members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Prior to reading Beautiful Swimmers, I grew extremely fond of living on the bay. Since reading the book, I have that much more appreciation for the culture of the bay.

    Book Description

Like the enormously successful first edition, this newly revised and updated edition of The Child Welfare Challenge and strengthening families. The authors believe that the task of child welfare is best viewed as a product of the three major foci of the textbook: policy, practice, and research. Accordingly, each chapter includes examples of the interrelationships of these three elements. The thorough updating in this second edition includes key information about recent federal legislation such as TANF and AFSA as well as policy-related outcomes research in addresses a broad array of issues in supporting children child welfare.

    4 out of 5 stars Review.......2002-05-16

This is a quite comprehensive book. The authors cover a wide variety of insightful information and research in the child welfare field. Very good for anybody who will be working in a public child welfare setting or conducting research in this area. As with most academic reading, it tends to be a little dry. And, because there is so much information, sometimes it doesn't flow very well.

      Book Description

Spiders are wonderful creatures. Their varied and complex range of behavior and highly developed sensory systems are excellently adapted to the environmental conditions - as is proven by their evolutionary success. Over 400 million years, spiders have developed their sensory organs to a fascinating technical perfection and complexity.
In his intriguing book, Professor Friedrich G. Barth puts this technical perfection into the context of "biology", in which the interaction between environment and sensory organs and the selectivity of the senses as a link between environment and behavior play a major role.

        Book Description

When published in Norway nearly thirty years ago, Ethnic Groups and Boundaries marked the transition to a new era of ethnic studies. Today this much-cited classic is regarded as the seminal volume from which stems much current anthropological thinking about ethnicity. Ethnic Groups and Boundaries opens with Barth's invaluable thirty-page essay that introduces readers to important theoretical issues in the analysis of ethnic groups. Following is a collection of seven essays--the results of a symposium involving a small group of Scandinavian social anthropologists--intended to illustrate the application of Barth's analytical viewpoints to different sides of the problems of polyethnic organization in various ethnographic areas, including Norway, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mexico, Afghanistan, and Laos.
