Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-08-17
You cannot go wrong with Fodor's travel books. They are so complete, up-to-date and accurate. I love the numerous photos. Lot's of info packed into the book. I feel very prepared to head out on a journey with Fodor's.
This will help with your trip........2007-05-21
Though we'll be spending most of our time on the Amalfi coast, we bought this for the big map and the information on Rome and Assisi. It has everything we need; we took notes on the two cities. We won't take this one with us because it's so heavy. (We're going to take along a guidebook on Amalfi.) But it serves our purpose well and is up-to-date on prices, current value of US currency and other information. I would give it a 5 rating if it also included information on getting to the airport hotel in Rome by train (from cities elswehere in Italy) and other things I found on the Net. It's useful to know that you can take the train into the internatinal airport and go by tunnel/monorail to an airport hotel if you have an early flight home the next morning.
Something got lost with inflation.......2007-05-14
An indispensible and comprehensive "Bible" in 1999, the current (2007) version is sorely lacking on restaurant and hotel recommendations in moderate to budget price categories (they do still exist). Missing altogether are Piombino (the quaint and scenic gateway to Isola d'Elba) and Porto San Stefano: close to Rome and a lively and picturesque alternative to Portofino without the hype. We could have left this travel guide at home.
Excellent vacation planning guide.......2007-02-12
This book, like all other Fodor's guides, is very well written, easy to understand and easy to use. We will be traveling to the Mediterranean this summer and it will be my Italian "bible". The enclosed map is very helpul as well.
FODOR'S GUIDES ARE SUPER.......2007-01-12
MY DAUGHTER AND I GOT A FODOR'S GUIDE TO NEW ZEALAND LAST SPRING AND USED IT CONSTANTLY ON OUR JOURNEY LAST MAY. MANY HELPFUL "OFF THE BEATEN TRACK" IDEAS, AS WELL AS POPULAR TOURIST ATTRACTIONS. I BOUGHT THE FODOR'S GUIDE TO ITALY 2007 AS A BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR HER AS SHE PLANS TO SPENT SOME QUALITY TIME THERE THIS SUMMER. SHE HAS ALREADY STARTED MAKING NOTATIONS WITH THE FULL CONFIDENCE OF FODOR'S RECCOMENDATIONS!

Book Description
Rome, Florence, and Venice: those magical names are at the top of everyone’s “must-see” list for Italy. First-time visitors design their itineraries around them, while Italy veterans return to them again and again, knowing that the old saying about Rome, “A lifetime is not enough,” equally applies to Florence and Venice.
This guide gives travelers what they want: the same high-quality coverage as in Fodor's other Italy guides, but with a focus on the most popular destinations. The resulting book is slimmer and lighter than competing guides, but it’s filled with great Fodor’s features and information that’s rich and varied enough to suit any taste.
• Includes itineraries showing readers how to see the best of Italy at their own pace, with maximum fun and minimum fatigue
• Magazine-like “In Focus” features include topics such as Ancient Rome, The Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi, Siena's Campo & the Palio, Who's Who in Renaissance (Florence), Cruising the Grand Canal (Venice), Palladio Country, Emilia One Tast at a Time, The Fashionista's Milan, and The Cinque Terre.
• Thorough coverage of the surrounding highlights, including Tuscany, Milan, and the Cinque Terre
• 8-page color insert
Customer Reviews:
Good information, terrible maps.......2007-08-20
I've never been disappointed with a Fodor's guide until now. Although the information is very good, as usual for Fodor's, the maps are terrible. In particular, the pullout map is almost useless; many streets are shown, but not marked with a name -- and why does a guide for Rome, Florence and Venice not have a pullout map for Florence? Even the maps within the guide itself are disappointing -- names are printed in black, but the maps themselves are in orange ink, making them hard to read, and once again they lack enough detail to find your way in a strange city. Fodor's should check Rick Steves' Italy guide to see how to do a map. If you choose this as your only guide for an Italian trip, make sure your first action in any of the three cities is to buy a good map! (I particularly recommend the Berendtson map of Venice, and the Editricelozzi map of Rome.)
Good book, but not ideal for (cheap) backpackers.......2007-06-08
I just graduated college and decided to go on a backpacking trip through Europe. We spend about a week in Italy, and this book was somewhat helpful, but not ideal.
The food suggestions were generally for slightly higher budget travelers, and the organization didn't really fit our travel style.
If you are backpacking or just a young person looking for a good travel book, our group had a good experience with the MTV Europe (MTV Guides)book. It was kind of bulky, but we used it nearly everyday.
If you are considering this book or something from the Eyewitness series, I would definitely go with the Eyewitness book. It may be more expensive, but it will be vastly more useful. In Rome I ended up purchasing Rome (Eyewitness Travel Guides) from a bookstore, and wishing I would have just bought the whole Italy book off Amazon in the first place.
Bottom line, if you are cheap or on a budget, I would look at other books, but this will get the job done if you are looking for some nice places to eat and stay.
Italy in all its glory.......2007-05-10
I used Fodor's to map out my itinerary to ensure I saw everything I wanted to see and experienced Italy in all its glory. It explained the "must sees" very well and concisely.
The map was handy but not as good as other maps purchased in a book store which had more detail right on the map of the places to see so we did not have to carry the book around.
Tips on how to avoid the long lines were very accurate.
Gives me what I'm looking for, and a little more.......2007-03-10
I've been looking at a bunch of guides for planning an Italy trip this summer, and this is the best so far. It's not as big as other guides, but it's got as much information about the places I'm going as the other guides do, and it also manages to throw in little things that are unique, like an interview with a winebar owner in Venice, explaining the local winebar customs and no-nos.

Customer Reviews:
Always a great help.......2007-07-08
I've been using Fodor's Guides for years and always find them accurate and helpful. Don't leave home without one!
4.5 Stars: Overall a Great Reference.......2007-05-26
What I like most about this book is that there is plenty of great information on each island's character, which is very helpful. If you're into the nightlife, restaurants and party scene, you don't want to be spending half of your vacation in say Kauai (for example). And if you're into nature photography, likewise it would make little sense to spend most of your time on Oahu. Every island is somewhat tailored to a particular lifestyle, so definitely look into each before booking!
And as you would expect with any Fodor's reference, there are many detailed hotel and restaurant recommendations as well. This is a must-have reference if you've never been to Hawaii before and own no other books of its kind. We searched through quite a few before buying this one and are glad for it.
The main flaw are the maps. I would like it if the maps were more detailed. They could have used one spread for each high level island map (which is what the book has), and then one spread for the east and west sections of each island, so you can really see where the main roads go, where the best stopping points are, etc. Still a great book overall. Highly Recommended.
One thing to remember: the north and east shores of each island get more rain than the south and western shores, depending on the time of year. Sometimes it's easy to forget this looking at the beautiful pictures of hotels online, etc. :-)
Fodor's Hawaii 2007.......2007-05-18
Excellent product! Came extremely fast--faster than expected--and in excellent condition! Will definitely buy from this person again! Thanks so much!
Fodor's Hawaii 2007 (Fodor's Gold Guides) .......2007-05-14
Our family is planning a vacation to the islands, and my husband had an outdated guide book. We needed a current guide of the islands.
A Classic Travel Guide.......2007-03-23
This is a decent book that gives you information on lodging, activities, eats, etc. The problem is that all of the Hawaiian Islands are packed into this one guide. That limits what can be said about each island. The books such as "Big Island Revealed" are much more detailed and aren't afraid of letting you know if a resort is prettier on paper than in reality. Those are 5-star books that a vacationer to the Islands must have.

About the Author:
Kim Wright Wiley, mother of two, wrote the first edition of Walt Disney World with Kids in 1989, and 17 editions later she's closing in on her 50th visit to the parks, a statistic that stuns even her. Her Disney favorites? "I'm addicted to Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, my favorite character is Eeyore, and if I have anything big to celebrate, I do it at the California Grill." When not at the theme parks, she lives in Charlotte, NC.
Customer Reviews:
helpful and organized.......2007-10-10
We went to Disney in a large group, and our family was by far the most well-informed and organized! Based on the books clear recommendations for age-appropriate RIDES and DINING we planned each day and even recommended to our other fellow travelers what they might enjoy with their kids. It was great because we were able to maximize our time on rides instead of just wandering around! How SMART we felt when we followed some of the tips from the books and saved ourselves lots of headaches. We looked like pros to the others in our group, and they thanked us for being so organized. We photocopied a few of the key pages to take to the parks with us so we could refer back to phone # and recommendations for restaurants, etc. This book is easy to read, well planned out, and thorough. I gave my copy to a friend in Mexico and she said she doesn't know how they would have made it through their vacation without it!
Great family times at Disney.......2007-09-06
Must have for families headed to Disney. This book helped us decide what to focus on with the kids and not do too much. We took a five yr old and almost two year old and they did not have any break downs! We just had a great time.
Essential planning guide for toddlers.......2007-09-05
This is a great book to plan for a disney vacation with little kids. We have used two editions now, and take it with us to leave in the stroller for reference. Even though we are veteran Disney travelers as adults, this really helped plan for our preschoolers.
This was the BEST BOOK to read before our trip to Disney World!.......2007-07-02
This book is a must-read for anyone (with OR WITHOUT KIDS) who is going to visit Disney World. It has information on everything! From tips on drinking water inside the park (a must to know if you have ever been to Disney Land!), to the ins and outs of hotels to choose from (both on and off site), to restaurant details, to what each ride is like along with height and weight requirements for each. You are able to get all kinds of information in order to plan your up coming visit and make informed decisions accordingly! We were able to loosely plan our vacation so that we weren't wasting precious time while in the park, trying to figure out what attractions to see and where to eat. WELL WORTH the money and the time to read this book. I plan on buying an updated copy everytime we get to go back to Disney World so I can keep informed and up-to-date on everything!
Pretty good, on many counts.......2007-06-14
A useful guide for anyone planning a trip to Disney World. Especially helpful are the charts in each chapter that give detailed information on attractions. The information includes a brief rating on the ride or show, the length, and any minimum height requirements. As I got this "2007" guide for Christmas, six months before our trip, I should say that there were some pieces of information that were outdated when I got it in 2006.
However, the publisher has done a respectable job to gather and include information from families who have visited Disney. These insights apply to the parks and surrounding resorts. Its not perfect, but proved to be one of several useful tools in planning our family vacation.

A helpful guide..........2007-06-13
Just back from 3 weeks in Israel and even though I was born there - this guide made it much easier to come back after 20 years. We used the guide in planing and reservations and were not disappointed with what we encountered. The Fodor's recommendations were right on the money and one of the books writers was our guide for a few days in Jerusalem - and even I (who lived there in the past) discovered a new aspects of it!
We are very pleased with the guide and will keep using it for future trips around the globe!
Review of Fodor's, 6th Edition Israel.......2007-06-12
A good resource for visiting Israel. Good advice on sample itineraies and places to stay and eat.
Adequate but could be better.......2007-05-28
I was grateful that Fodor's was the first of the major guides to release an update on Israel after the tourist drought of the early 2000s. The book has strong points and weak points. The description of sites, the history, and the information given on each attraction is very solid. But when it comes to choosing hotels and restaurants, information that I count on a good guidebook to provide, Fodor's Israel fails badly. Even in major cities, only a small number of options are offered, and I was stunned to see major, important options omitted altogether. All in all, this guidebook would not be very helpful if I did not already know Israel. And of course, it is written for people who are not knowledgeable.
Those folks could do far better with the updated Frommer's Israel that came out a few months later. This book isn't bad -- just not good enough.
For the non-budget traveler.......2007-05-18
As I recently arrived in Israel, I found out too late to whom this book was written: the non-budget traveler. Several of the "cheapest" hostels in Jerusalem (for example) start at $50/night. Nevermind that you can find accomodations for far more affordable all over the place. And these are the cheapest "budget accomodations" according to the book. The prices of hostels, restaurants, taxis, and other fares are rarely mentioned in the book, so you have no idea what your getting yourself into. These are crucial pieces of information. (Hitch-hiking, by the way, is an excellent mode of free transport here) On top of that the maps are rather useless. There is one low detail map of all of Israel, and then super detailed maps of the inner cities, but no maps inbetween. What happens if you don't know how to get to these super detailed neighborhoods? I found a far more useful map free at a hotel.
On the other hand, for the average tourist aiming at a couple weeks stay, and looking to see some good sites without too much concern as to the price, I'm sure this book would suffice.
Fodor's complete guide to Israel: people, places, past and pastimes.......2007-01-23
At last there's a guide that shares the country's pleasures that Israelis and Europeans have enjoyed for years. Fodor's Israel captures outdoor sports, hiking, beaches, and snorkeling in addition to the historic and religious sites.
The Pleasures and Pastime section for each region highlights what Israelis are likely to enjoy--from archaeology and beaches to walking and wine. Great Itineraries from 1 to 19 days route the visitor through historic and beautiful places in Israel overall and by region. And Closeups provide the history and context for the country and its people.
Its many detailed maps let you know where you are. And whether you're looking to walk the Christian stations in Jerusalem or walk the rock of Masada where Jews stood up against Rome, Fodor's confidently guides and explains. Masada, nearby the Dead Sea, for example includes a two-page guide to the site with complete details for visitors and a full page feature on its history and legacy.
And there's an extensive section (at least 20 pages) devoted to Eilat and all the sports activities associated with its coast line on the Red Sea. I must admit that snorkeling in the Red Sea made me feel more like an Israeli than anything I've ever done, and I will never forget my first time.
In addition to the sites and activities, Fodor's comes through with its usual strengths in up-to-date and highly focused hotel and restaurant listings throughout the country. I'm always surprised by how one paragraph about a place to stay or where to have a meal can be as revealing as it is in Fodor's. And for shoppers there's plenty to do.
And while Fodor's describes so many places and things to do in Israel, seasoned travellers know that spending more time in fewer places in a country will bring you the biggest satisfaction.
No matter what you're going to Israel for, Fodor's is a good bet. After all it's written by the people who know it best, people who live there and spend their time sharing their country with visitors.

Fodor in Ireland.......2007-06-11
The guide was good but not great - happily others contributed facts so we could make more informed choices as to where and what to see related to museums and castles. Not as good as other Fodor's books!

decent guide book.......2007-06-13
While I gleaned much useful info. from Fodor's guide, I wish that they had either given a better overview of lodging, or left it alone entirely. How does a hotel/apartment receive a review? What is the criteria? A bit more info. would have been helpful. Overall, a good tool for planning a trip to Oz.

Customer Reviews:
Great for planning an excellent trip.......2007-09-25
Fodor's 2007 helped me plan an excellent trip. Several maps make things really easy to find. I would have been completely lost travelling to the Big Apple for the first time, but I felt like I belonged there because I had studied Fodor's NYC 2007 before the trip! It was easy to get around, the book provided excellent choices for hotels, shopping, clubbing, and of course the best attractions. Its smaller size makes it easy to carry around, too. Now every time I go to NY, I don't leave home without this book.
Highly recommended --- better than all the rest.......2007-08-28
This is the one to buy. Most useful for preps and during visit. The others are too much, too little and hard to understand. This one is just right.
Useful guide.......2007-08-01
This guide was extremely useful, and I'm definitely glad I bought it. However, take the price listings with a grain of salt, they are often times very inaccurate. Don't plan a budget by it!
The most useful aspect of the book, oddly enough, was the pullout map. We took it everywhere with us and didn't lead us wrong!
Too big to travel.......2007-07-31
This Fodor's guidebook does a thorough job of breaking down the different neighborhoods of NYC (with helpful maps), and there are some unexpected extras, such as a full-color section on Central Park (with maps), a section on the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (with a gallery floorplan), and a detailed section on "Ground Zero." However, this book also seems to leave out "insider tips" that I found in Frommer's NYC guidebooks (such as Frommer's "New York City Day by Day" or the "Portable NYC" guide). For instance, while the Fodor's book does explain how to catch the free Staten Island Ferry, Frommer's "Portable" guide recommends that you sit on the right side for the best views of the Statue of Liberty. Despite all its break-out maps, Fodor's guide doesn't include a theatre district map. In addition, information on transportation options for getting to and from the area airports is shoved to the back of the guidebook like an afterthought. Finally, the organization wasn't the most effective for me; attractions are organized by neighborhood, so if you don't know, for instance, that the Empire State Building is located in the Union Square district, you have to use the index. It would be nice to have an overview of famous sites at the beginning of the guide to get oriented rather than have to start out "digging" for all the places you may want to see.
Unfortunately, this 500+ page guidebook is just too bulky to carry around NYC. However, it does provide a solid overview for those people still in the planning stages of their trip. I plan to take this book with me to NYC, but to pull out the lengthy sections on "Where to Stay" (I already have hotel reservations) and "Where to Dine" (I've already made dining arrangements). I do think Fodor's complements the Frommer's guides because it (Fodor's) provides great maps and interesting historical information about some sites; however, I still prefer the portable Frommer's guides, which provide compact, but meaty information.
best NYC guide for sightseeing.......2007-07-12
We looked at perhaps a dozen guidebooks for NYC when we first arrived in town, and liked this one the best. Many guidebooks seem to be a bit stuffy. This one was written with warmth and panache by people who seem intimately familiar with their subject matter. The authors also included excerpts from various on-line reviews/blogs and the like which are interspersed in the text and add to the hipness of the book.
Sightseeing is particularly well covered in this book. It describes the various neighborhoods of NYC, their history, sociological quirks, as well as their architectural and cultural highlights extremely well and also includes detailed lists of restaurants and shopping opportunities in each neighborhood. The book also includes a number of interesting "field trips" which many travellers might not otherwise consider, such as a foot tour of the Brooklyn Bridge (one of the highlights of our trip), a tour of Harlem gospel choirs, pub crawls, best views, festivals, boat excursions, etc. etc. Major museums, such as the Metropolitan and MOMA are covered in great detail, and there is also an entire chapter on lesser known "niche" museums as well as detailed coverage of art galleries.
Hotels are reasonably well covered, although online review sites specifically devoted to hotels will be more comprehensive and current than any general guidebook can be. This book also does a good job covering theatre, clubs, bars, and restaurants with separate chapters devoted to each. Again, however, the NYC restaurant scene, in particular, is so vast that hard-core foodies will also want to check out Zagat's guide and online review sites.

Customer Reviews:
Good in theory, not in practice.......2006-04-20
Before going to China earlier this month I bought this guidebook based on the single review it had and the reputation that Fodor's has as a good guidebook publisher. However, I was disappointed. This is why:
The good points of the book are:
- It has good overviews of China as a whole and interesting descriptions of each area (good for planning the trip),
- The recommended sights are well selected, and
- There are sample walks which may be good for the traveler at a loss at what to do.
The main problems with this book are:
- No Chinese script within the chapters or on the maps (there is a small section in the back with script for major sightseeing spots). This lack of Chinese could become a nightmare if you tried to show a taxi driver your hotel.
- The way Fodor's prints its maps is strange to say the least. For the bigger cities it prints a separate map for sights, eating, and sleeping, which can be unnerving when you are trying to find restaurants in the same area as your hotel. For the mid-sized cities it only has a map for the sights. Neither post offices nor banks are listed on the maps.
- No photos or pics whatsoever.
- Does not give detailed information for traveling to other locations.
Though I did use it in the planning stages of the trip, once I was on the road I left it in my bag and used my friend's Lonely Planet and Rough Guide instead.
April 20th, 2006
I've decided to add more to this review. In my last one I was a little harsh and I don't want to give the impression that the Fodor's is all bad. On the contrary, it has detailed descriptions of sights and helpful suggestions about what to do and where to go.
However, Fodor's needs to revamp the book. They need to realize that China is not like Germany or Spain, where everyone reads the same writing script. If you get lost in a city in China and you try to use this book, unless you meet someone who speaks English or you yourself speak Chinese, you are in deep water.
Fodor's needs to provide Chinese writing for all the hotels, restaurants, and major sights that it mentions, preferably on the maps as well. It also needs to provide more detailed maps. It would be helpful if Fodor's provided more specifics for travel (like approximate prices). Some photos would also be nice.
If Fodor's improves the book in this wy, it will truly accomplish the goal it has of "cover[ing] the best properties, sights, and activities."
Fodor's 2005 China Guide.......2005-09-01
The new Fodor's China guide issued in 2005 has more detail and more useful information than either the Lonely Planet or National Geographic guidebooks. I have found it to be very accurate relative to places I've been in China during my five visits over the past four years. I highly recommend it for anyone who plans to travel in China.

Customer Reviews:
Good Guide.......2007-08-15
First of all, the guide is design for people who want to travel across the Arizona. Only 55 out of 463 pages was dedicated to the Grand Canyon, which was my main destination. However, I found the GC chapter very helpful with planning my stay. It describes everything you need to know without unnecessary dragging. It covers not only important topics such a accommodation and restaurants but also helps you to get the most out of your stay depending on how many days you have. It briefly describes the hiking trails on all three rims and gives a very good tourist related tips. The book doesn't mention the glass platform over the Canyon on West Rim called Skywalk, probably because the opening of the platform took place in March this year. To sum up, buying the Fodors Guide was a good choice.
