Book Description
A soulful, surprising coming of age journey by a dynamo who used her own adversity as a platform for examining issues all young women face.Having finished journalism school and landed her dream job at age 27, the last thing Geralyn Lucas expects to hear is a breast cancer diagnosis. She decides to go public with her disease despite fears about the backlash at work, and her bold choices in treatment are irreverent and uplifting. When her breast is under construction and her hair is falling out, her skirts get shorter. She goes to work every day and gets promoted. She has sex with her bandages on. She reinvents her beauty and in a bold move of conscious objection, forgoes the final phase of her breast reconstruction: the nipple. She is reborn in a tattoo parlor when she gets a heart tattoo where her nipple once was. Geralyn recovers from her mastectomy and chemo and has a baby in the same hospital where she was treated for cancer. What could have been a huge negative for this young cancer survivor became the impetus to examine her own sexuality and burgeoning womanhood. Virtually nothing has been written for women of a young age who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. This book also deals with the broader issue of self-acceptance that anyone grappling with questions of illness, self-image and sexuality can identify with.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book.......2007-07-20
Being a young breast cancer survivor myself, I found I was able to relate well to this book. It is an excellent choice for anyone going through treatment, as it is humorous and uplifting.
Compelling.......2007-04-30
To put it simply, I couldn't put this book down. I don't think I've ever read anything that could have me crying 1/3 of the way down the page, and then laughing at the bottom. A few minor nitpicks, e.g. explaining terms or situations in later chapters that had already been explained earlier on, as if the reader may have forgotten, but otherwise a very good read.
If you have already seen the Lifetime movie based off of this book, the book is not spoiled for you and you will still enjoy it; I saw the movie first myself. If you have not seen the movie, I recommend watching it before or after you read the book, as it brings a new dimension to Geralyn's story.
Great breast cancer story.......2007-03-05
I first saw the movie - while I was going through breast cancer myself at 32. Months later - I bought the book. I loved it! I was able to understand what other people went through. It was easy to read with lots of charm. I feel like I really know her and want to read more about how her life is today. I have shared this book with others so they can also understand what it is like to have breast cancer. It should be read by anyone with a loved one - breast cancer can happen to anyone.
absolutely fabulous.......2007-02-07
I cannot even describe how much I LOVED this book and the movie on Lifetime that went with it. I actually had seen the movie before I read the book and I loved it so much that I had to get the book. I think every woman should read this book b/c everybody will at one time or another know someone with breast cancer. This book was funny, sad and just an amazing story. I think Geralyn Lucas is the poster girl for breast cancer and just for women in general. I cried my heart out, laughed hysterically and thought about this for weeks after I read it. It will touch your heart and so will she.
Interesting approach.......2007-01-12
I found the way she dealt with her situation admirable. However, something about the last 2 chapters derailed the book.

Laugh & Learn.......2007-07-19
Barbara's wit is as enjoyable as her wisdom. A very easy read, this book puts a fun spin on the typically boring side of business management.
Att'n all real estate agents. Buy this book........2007-07-14
Should be required reading for anyone in real estate sale, new to the business or a seasoned agent.
Be aware this merely a new title for an old book.......2007-06-13
I ordered this book thinking it was different from Use What You've Got & Other Lessons I Learned from my Mom, which I bought in hardcover and enjoyed. It is not, it is the same as the older book. They simply retitled it.
This is hands down up there in my top 5 business books.......2007-06-12
Yes - I have a personal connection to it because of the tie in with my background. Barbara started her real estate agency on a bootstrap just like me! BUT this book should not just be read by real estate business owners. It's witty, relevant to any business owner and beautifully crafted. While I of course admire Barbara for what she did turning a $1,000 investment by her boyfriend into one of Manhattan's largest real estate groups - my admiration grew when I read this sensational book.
One of the Best Business Books I've Read.......2007-05-14
I review sales and marketing books for a living, and this is without a doubt one of the best sales books I've read. Not only is it full of well-grounded, sound business ideas and principles, it's also hilarious! I love Corcoran's style, wit, chutzpah, and self-deprecating humor.
Whatever business you're in, you'll find something of value in this easy-to-read, laugh-a-minute, book.
Customer Reviews:
presents breastfeeding as the norm!.......2006-05-13
I like this book for the way it presents breastfeeding as a normal, expected way to feed a baby. I've seen too many children's books illustrated with baby getting bottles and this is a fresh alternative. My kids found it silly and engaging, despite the very basic line drawings and lack of plot. It's perfect for a 2-4 year old, but I think a bit simplistic for most kids older than five.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-21
This book is great, and my kids love it. My children were breastfeed to at least age 1. It is an act of nature, so get over it people! I choose to feed my children the natural way rather than feed them some man made crap. This book shows and teachs even the youngest child about our bodies and what the different parts are used for. I love the whole series and applaude the writer for giving us these wonderful books about topics most find taboo.
Two Stars Seems Appropriate.......2002-02-18
Yes, this is a cartoon book about breasts. There are no actual photographs, the cartoons are reminiscent of cave drawings, and the text is somewhat stilted (perhaps it's the translation) and often hilarious (whether intentional or not). For those who don't know (and I hope this isn't considered a "spoiler"), breasts (at least the female version) are useful--particularly for babies. Lots of babies get milk from a mamma's breast and this book covers the process nicely and with simple words and (even simpler) drawings. If you want to teach a young child about breasts, this may be the book for you.
hysterical book about the function of breasts/breastfeeding.......2000-10-24
A candid and realistic discussion of male and female breasts, and why they are different. A big focus on breastfeeding as the (only real) function of the breasts. Breastfeeding portrayed in a wonderful light and the milk production process is explained in simple terms. I began reading this to my breastfeeding 1 year-old and he loved it then and continues to love it as a weaned 3 year-old. There are many funny parts. Highly recommended to read to children who are exposed to breastfeeding and who feel breasts are a normal body part to see and know that breasts have a real and important function. Great to read to older children in preparation for the arrival of a new sibling who will be breastfed. This book is not in any way sexual or titillating and does not treat breasts as a sexual toy for adult men.
Thorough and hilarious.......2000-06-15
I bought the Japanese version of this book in a 2nd-hand bookstore. Even though there were no English words anywhere in the book, I could totally understand what was being communicated by the illustrations.
The children and adults drawn in the book are endearing and expressive. And I laughed outloud in the bookstore as I thumbed through it. The expressions on the characters' faces are just adorable. Adults of my parents generation were a little too shy or aloof when the topic of sexuality or body parts came up. Many adults of my generation state quite clearly that they will do it different, but it's hard to know how to break the ice on such topics when your only experience was with parents that acted as though the subject matter was taboo. My own parents were pretty forthcoming, but I know that was the exception and not the rule.
A simple and to-the-point book with a simple and to-the-point title.
Book Description
When Tania Katan was 21 years old she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She survived, minus a breast. Exactly 10 years later it happened again. By age 31 Katan was a two-time breast cancer survivor with the scars to prove it and a sense of humor forged by the unthinkable. Her memoir, loaded with rage and blistering humor, tells the tale of living through two bouts with death and is woven through with stories of picking up women while bald, coping with her supportive but neurotic family, running in two 10K races, and pledging to never ever date a psychotic woman again. An unforgettable account of survival.
Tania Katan's plays have been seen at Connecticut Repertory Theatre, Circle Repertory Theatre, Theatre Rhinoceros, Pacific Residence Theatre, A Traveling Jewish Theatre, and Theatre of NOTE.
Customer Reviews:
I Love this book!!!!.......2007-09-04
Tania Katan is a ROCK STAR, no two ways about it. Read this book, it will make you laugh and cry!!
Short but not shallow - moving but not mushy.......2006-11-15
Katan's story is not a typical breast cancer survivor success story - in part because she got hit twice, once at 21, and again ten years later, just when she thought all was well. Katan deftly shifts between flashback and present-day in comparing and contrasting her experience with each cancer and its removal. This is a easy read that will nevertheless leave an indelible impression.
A hard-hitting, honest account which doesn't pull punches or disguise its humanness.......2005-12-08
Author Tania Katan was 21 when she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer: 10 years later and one breast less she again faced the same diagnosis. Don't expect the usual story of pain and courage: Katan's raw, blasting memoir is playful and angry alike, covering everything from self-image and post-mastectomy sex to shopping for a mastectomy bra. My One-Night Stand With Cancer is a hard-hitting, honest account which doesn't pull punches or disguise its humanness.
A different book ... a different perspective on cancer.......2005-11-09
I saw a short article announcing the book's release in a magazine and thought it would be an interesting read, because you seldom see a humorous look at something we deem as "not a joking matter". WOW! Let me say, this book is more than just about someone getting cancer. It's about family and friendships and no matter how quirky your family is and how toxic some relationships are, you can still come out on top even when you've been hit not once, but twice with a life threatening disease. Tania is my hero. Very inspiring story. You'll find yourself scolding her in some parts and emphatically cheering her on in others. I definitely recommend this book. You will not regret it.
Tania Rocks!.......2005-10-26
This book is awesome! As a cancer surviour myself I could relate to what Ms. Katan has gone through. Although this book is written with humor, it did stir up feelings that I thought I had all ready dealt with. It is extremely well written and an easy read. Even if you have not had to battle cancer, I think you will enjoy this book, especially if someone you care for has gone through this terrible illness. Tania, I hope you continue writing and I will be your number one fan!

Customer Reviews:
The book I really needed.......2005-05-27
This book addressed one of the primary issues for me, as a newly diagnosed cancer survivor - how to keep up with my job while still taking the time needed for medical treatments and recuperation. The book focuses on ten fairly high-powered women with executive and professional jobs, but the preface notes that nowadays most mid-life women are working outside the home and have to balance work responsibilities with their personal needs. Many of us are single and self-supporting; employer-provided health insurance is essential to cover the considerable costs of treatment. So this book helped to answer my overwhelming need to know how to communicate with people at work and how to balance my work schedule with the time I needed to deal with the cancer.
Some of the technical information in the book is a little outdated, since the experience of some of the women went back into the 1980s and the book itself came out in 1997. However, I found the book enormously useful in addressing the work-related issues that often are given little attention in other cancer books I've read.
Ground-breaking, insightful, dynamic!.......1999-08-30
From the foreword written by Erma Bombeck:
I do not know nor have I ever met the ten women who authored this book.
But we share a common bond. All of us were watching our prime-time lives pass by when a voice announced, "We interrupt this life to bring you cancer." We didn't even have time to turn the dial.
I have read a hundred books on breast cancer - war stories of women who did battle with the most frightening adversary in their lives. But BREAST CANCER? LET ME CHECK MY SCHEDULE! is different. These are personal stories of ten women, all over thirty, who pursue careers outside their homes......the way they accepted their diagnosis, the decision sthey made, their approach to therapy and the way they coped all reflected their experience in the workplace.
I wanted to be part of this book mostly because of its title. It fits me to a "T." I too am a working woman complete with a little calendar that tells me when to have a headache. If it isn't penciled in, I don't have one. On April 23, 1992 under "Things to Do Today" I jotted down, "radical mastectomy, noon."
.........
As I read this book, I was hoping it would address the one emotion that all cancer patients rarely speak about: the uncertainty of our future. It did. We are a unique group who have been allowed to face our mortality, and oddly enough, it has made us better people for it. There isn't a survivor who doesn't admit she has changed. ........
I've heard women say, "I can't read cancer books. They're downers. BREAST CANCER? LET ME CHECK MY SCHEDULE is not a downer. How could it be when you enter the lives of these ten women who triumph over an invasion of their bodies. These are women with drive and purpose who aren't ready to give up. Cancer? It's a full week. I'll have my people call your people and set something up.
Prima donnas with breast cancer? Well, sort of........1999-08-30
This is a concept book, as you might guess from the title. I didn't much care for the concept.Ten busy professional women, all initially diagnosed with Stage I or II breast cancer, were invited by McCarthy Medical Marketing and Innovative Medical Education Consortium, Inc. to form a focus group that would help to foreground the needs of their special category - busy professional women with breast cancer - for the edification of medical personnel and other cancer care providers. The resulting book, put together in-house by MMM and IMEC, "is intended to provide health-care professionals with insight into what makes this group of women 'different' and, in turn, to enhance their relationships with them." And how are these women "different?" The book explains, "For all ten authors, the diagnosis of breast cancer was a major inconvenience because...it interrupted their busy, active, and fulfilled lives." It turns out none of them felt comfortable crying in doctor's offices or losing control. Nor enjoyed the disagreeable task of "comforting distraught well-wishers" such as their friends and extended family. Nor - back to the title - easily found time for treatment and other medical visits. Why, one woman had the unimaginable experience of being put on hold 15 minutes for her lab results! Whew, what a relief that the rest of us don't have any of that to worry about. As the book progresses and this offensive start-off impression recedes into the background, the characters become more sympathetic and their medical and professional fates interesting. So I'm inclined to hope that these 10 authors didn't quite anticipate how the final draft would make them look. Every woman who has breast cancer has a right to our sympathy and concern. That goes for busy professionals too. Will appeal to: Obsessive fact-gatherers trying to assess their options and eager to learn what happened to other people with a similar lifestyle.

I Flunked My Mammogram!.......2005-09-03
This book is essential for any woman diagnosed with breast cancer. On April 1, I received the news, I had breast cancer. In a matter of a few days, I needed to choose between a lumpectomy with radiation or a masectomy. The surgeon also talked about possible need for chemotherpy. It was overwhemling. A co-worker, diagnosesd with breast cancer four months preciously, handed me this book and told me to go home and read it before I made any decisions or saw my surgeon. The book takes only 2 to 3 hours to read and provided emought information for me to have a rational conversations about the choices with my surgeon and oncologist and to make the tough decision.
I friend of my was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. As soon as I read the news, I order this book and gave her the same advise. I also asked her to buy this book for any friend of hers diagnosed with breast cancer. My friend read the book and thanked me over and over again for the gift.
Best Thing You Can do For a Friend With Breast Cancer.......2002-04-24
I have sent this book to numerous friends and associates affected with this disease. All found the book to be a helpful guide that they used to document doctor findings and their recommendations. This workbook with detailed instructions on how you can be the best advocate for your health. It helps women diagnosed with breast cancer to think as clearly as possible about the medical issues associated with their situation so they can make informed decisions about treatments
TERRIFIC!.......2001-09-25
"I think the book is terrific! When you're first diagnosed, you're in a state of shock. There are so many books out there, but many are too large, too technical. This book is concise. It has a sensible, relaxed way of dealing with the topic."
Book Description
Humorist Amy Krouse Rosenthal's hilarious and nail-on-the-head writing has struck again. Her latest book, The Same Phrase Describes My Marriage and My Breasts, spotlights the lighter side of parenting with a sharp wit reminiscent of the late Erma Bombeck, but with a modern twist. Rosenthal reassures parents that the insanity that comes with raising a child is perfectly normal. It is a delightful book for any parent who has realized that stain-free baby clothes and perfectly behaved children only exist on commercials for Kodak and Downy. Rosenthal's endearing collection of humorous anecdotes and reflections is drawn from her illuminating first years as a mother of three. Being a pregnant working mom means occasionally having a urine specimen hidden in your briefcase for your mid-day checkup. No matter how anal you get, no matter how methodically you put away the toys, the Candyland cards end up in the Lego bin, and Lion King puzzle pieces turn up in your shoes. Daylight savings means that on one Sunday, when it's 7:30 A.M., you still have something like 80 more hours until they go to bed. Forget the instructions of Dr. Spock and open your heart to a woman who proudly survives life with three kids-granted not a single glass from her bridal registry remains intact-and relishes being a mom. At times touching, at other times hysterical, The Same Phrase Describes My Marriage and My Breasts is a must for parents who long ago realized that parenting is just like The Brady Bunch if you eliminate the neatly-wrapped solutions and toss in complete unpredictability and random vomiting.

Fantastic.......2007-07-29
Hilariously funny. I read many of the pages aloud to my husband during a roadtrip. I wanted to print every single phrase, every single quote, notation and thought in 180 point font and hang them up on my refrigerator. Loved it.
Laugh outloud.......2007-05-31
This is a delightful funny book about parenting. Sure, a lot of us have been there and done that but few with such hilarity. Even the title makes me laugh. And, if you want more chuckles about parenting, order ParentLaughs: Quips, Quotes, and Anecdotes about Raising Kids ASIN:0517228173
Not just for moms..........2001-12-28
I bought this book for my wife for Christmas. By the time I wrapped it, I had read the whole thing. I'd pick it up, read a little, laugh a lot, put it down and do other things. I kept coming back to it and eventually I found I had finished it.
Rosenthal's notes are dead on and she writes with a style that makes the most mundane things humorous. Sort of a Seinfeld for parents, except as parents you'll really understand what she's talking about. You may even get a little absolution from the book - for example, in a list of confessions she admits she has let sucking the toothpaste off a toothbrush pass as "brushing". Having kids myself, I can completely understand and picture that situation...
Great stuff...it was a perfect stocking stuffer. Guys, this would be a great book to surprise your wife with for no reason.
Mommy Humor at its finest!.......2001-11-29
Need a good belly laugh? Amy delivers the goods! Hilarious quips all parents can relate to and tender thoughts we share. A great gift for a new mom or a constant Mom!
Good for a "middle-of-chaos" Mommy laugh.......2001-05-07
This was very funny and I've recommended it to several other Mothers. However, do not spend your money on her "Book of Eleven" as it does not compare to this book!

I was honored to be on the receiving list of Carla's "Metamorphosis" emails as she went through this experience, but the book brought even more insight and inspiration and a better understanding of her journey. I have given this book to several friends who have faced the same or similar diagnosis - it gave them comfort to read Carla's account and to know that they shared many of the same experiences and emotions.

It is clear to this reader that Carla's diagnosis and treatment has been a source of personal growth and insight, lovingly shared with those around her. Insightful read from one who has walked the walk.......2006-07-27
Going through the ordeal of breast cancer is horrific enough, but to have the wherewithall and courage to write about the experience....amazing! Anyone facing this diagnosis must read about Carla's journey. It's a most insightful and inspiring story from a woman who has walked the walk.

When a woman finds out her mother has breast cancer, her world becomes a tornado, whirling with fears of her mother's disfigurement, pain, and death, and the panic and certainty that she will be next to develop the disease. Award-winning journalist Laurie Tarkan (whose mother died of a liver disorder when Tarkan was 11 years old) interviewed many women whose mothers had breast cancer. She chose 16 daughters' stories for My Mother's Breast, sprinkling each narrative with her commentary and that of psychologists.
Many of the mother-daughter stories are love stories, but some are not. Felicia's mother told her, "One reason I have breast cancer is because you kicked my breasts when you were little." Kathie's mother hid from her the fact that she was dying, so Kathie was never able to say goodbye. Some of the daughters who are their mother's support system can't find support themselves, like Jill: "My mother had breast cancer, my father was a wreck, my brother [was] an alcoholic, and my grandmother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My boyfriend was giving me problems on top of that." Not all the daughters are models of virtue and emotional stability, either: 17-year-old Stacy was a self-destructive rebel even through her mother's chemotherapy; 13-year-old Julie became bulimic.
Both the mothers and the daughters run the gamut of personalities and emotions. If you have a mother with breast cancer, you'll understand that you're not alone with your fears and concerns, and these real-life examples will enhance your understanding of your experience. --Joan Price
Book Description
Focusing on the unique psychological needs of women who must deal with the pain and devastation of a mother's breast cancer while repressing their fears for their own health, Tarkan profiles a wide range of women who have witnessed the effects of breast cancer.

This book was OK. I bought it after my mother's death to cancer hoping to find some similarities to my situation, but apparently nobody interviewed for this book experienced intense guilt and severe depression.
Helping to cope with Cancer.......2002-03-28
Wow, I wish this book had been available when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1975 when I was ten years old. Her struggle lasted until 1988 when I was 23 and she passed away. This book not only helped me come to terms with my mothers passing and my feelings, but helped when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer and my father was diagnosed with pancrease and liver cancer within 6 months of each other. I was the primary care for all three of them and took care of them along with hospiac up until their deaths. I now refer this book to anyone dealing with cancer of any kind, sometimes I will even buy it and give it to the person. Every single person I have referred or given this book to has said that they feel much better and are able to deal with life. They in turn refer the book to people they know.
My thanks and appreciation to the author for placing these stories into a book.
gift to my two daughters.......2000-03-30
My daughters were both happy to read their copy of the book. Each took with them different portions that were helpful. My oldest daughter plans on giving the book to one of her students who is now 15 and going through a similar experience with her mother. My youngest, said she was greatly helped by the book. Thank you so much. Carolyn
I think it is an extremely important book.......1999-11-10
I read it almost in one sitting. I literally could not put it down. The book was extremely well written and very easy to read. Its content was powerful, honest and informative. It moved with grace from one chapter to the next and never became bogged down in detail or data. From the perspective of a mother who has had breast cancer, it was painful to see, in black and white, so many of the issues that my daughters have had to face. I think any mother and daughter who have had an experience with prolonged and serious illness of the mother, would greatly benefit from reading your book. In fact, I was so impressed with its content that I am going to buy three extra copies and give one to each of my girls. I think it will help them to better understand their experiences, their feelings, and their behaviors during my many illnesses. I hope it will help them with the confusion, rage and guilt that I know has often assailed them. From the perspective of a breast cancer survivor, who was also a daughter, niece and cousin of women with ovarian cancer, I thought your final chapters contained incredibly important information. I know they would have helped me fifteen years ago. I would recommend it, and will do so, to anyone.
Compelling and well researched; a great resource.......1999-07-12
Laurie Tarkan's book brings attention to a serious but rarely discussed issue--the unique experience of women whose mothers develop breast cancer. These women often have to cope with the loss of one of their most significant relationships at a young age as well as the knowledge that they may also be at increased risk for breast cancer. Through compelling personal stories of daughters of women with breast cancer, Laurie Tarkan's book explores the emotional and medical repercussions with intelligence and sensitivity. The book provides expert information to help these women assess their breast cancer risk and informs them of the most up-to-date options for reducing their risk. Women whose mothers have had breast cancer (and others who've had to cope with a serious loss in their lives) will find real help in dealing with their often overwhelming feelings.

This book literally got me through the three weeks between my diagnosis and surgery. Dr. Joseph is a caring, intelligent woman whose personal experience and ability to articulate it are extraordinary. She covers standard and alternative therapies in a non-threatening and easy to understand way. The story of her spritual journey was remarkable.
Every woman should read this book!.......1996-12-24
This books is more than about breast cancer. It deals with working with doctors, emotional wellbeing and nutrition. It is how every woman should treat herself all the time, not just when faced with a life threateing disease. Very informative and easy to understand
