Book Description

What would you do to inherit a million dollars? Would you be willing to change your life? Jason Stevens is about to find out in Jim Stovall's The Ultimate Gift. Red Stevens has died, and the older members of his family receive their millions with greedy anticipation. But a different fate awaits young Jason, whom Stevens, his great-uncle, believes may be the last vestige of hope in the family. "Although to date your life seems to be a sorry excuse for anything I would call promising, there does seem to be a spark of something in you that I hope we can fan into a flame. For that reason, I am not making you an instant millionaire." What Stevens does give Jason leads to The Ultimate Gift. Young and old will take this timeless tale to heart.

5 out of 5 stars life enhancing experience.......2007-10-10

A close friend gave me the book and the minute I opened it I knew I would not be able to put it down. It is a very fast read and it is packed full of valuable insights. As soon as I finished it I went on line and ordered a copy for each of my adolescent grandchildren. I believe there is something to be gained from each chapter. The book held my interest to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book, watch the movie - both will inspire!.......2007-10-01

I received this book as a gift shortly after watching the movie by the same name - I was greatly impressed with the movie and anxious to read the book (since everyone knows that the book is always better than the movie). This book is no exception to that rule - an outstanding read and it was as easy to read as the movie was to watch. This is a novel, a work of fiction that drives home some real life points! The premise of the book is about what's really important in life - is it what we build with our hands or the money and worldly success we achieve, or is it something more than that, something that isn't tangible and can't be bought or sold for any amount of money? In his final will, a dying wealthy man tries to communicate from the grave the true meaning of life to a family member who up until this point hasn't got a clue!

I would think that this book could probably be read to children in upper elementary school and could be read by 7th or 8th graders on their own. The book should be read by parents first so that they can engage their children in conversation along the way. While the book isn't overtly Christian, you'll find that the lessons taught in this novel are very similar to the wisdom shared in the Book of Proverbs and throughout Scripture. Stovall isn't preaching, but he sure can drive a point home with this story; and these twelve "gifts" passed from one generation to the next are essential for each and every one of us to learn as well.

While some say that the movie isn't as good as the book, I say that they are a pretty good compliment of each other. The movie takes various liberties with the book to get this message on screen, but you won't be disappointed with either. The book is written to provoke thought and discussion and families should use them as tools to teach valuable life lessons to their children - Red Stevens would have wanted it that way!

1 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Gift DVD.......2007-09-27

The Ultimate Gift you sent me was a total disaster. I ordered the movie edition and you sent me a book and a promotional DVD. I did not receive the movie edition of the Ultimate Gift. Unfortunately I had ordered it to take on a bus trip that I was directing and I had not taken the time to watch what you sent me, thinking it was the movie edition. When I put it in the DVD player with everyone on the bus eager to watch the movie there was only the promotional disc. Needless to say I was embarrassed and not too happy. Fortunately along the way I was able to purchase the DVD that I thought I was buying from Amazon at a much higher price. I have ordered from Amazon before and have been very pleased but not this time.

5 out of 5 stars A Timely Gift.......2007-09-24

Several copies of The Ultimate Gift were placed on a table at my workplace. A handwritten note read, "Take one and pass it on." The title was intriguing and never one to pass up something free or an opportunity to read, I took one.

Having gained knowledge of most of these gifts through the ups and downs of life, I enjoyed the validations, while unfortunately identifying with Uncle Red's mistakes. I am grateful to the person who made it possible to have a copy of the book.

I titled this review 'a timely gift' because I received in time read it and mail it to my son as a gift for his 26th birthday. Like Uncle Red, wishing to provide, I robbed my children of many of the gifts. I am hoping the book will make a difference in my son's life as he is not a happy person even though he has many blessings. When and if I am in touch with my prodigal daughter, I will share The Ultimate Gift with her, also. It is my goal to share copies of The Ultimate Gift with many, many young persons.

2 out of 5 stars Good , but not terrific.......2007-09-19

The reviews I read promised an inspiring book. It was not to be. It was an interesting premise and story. But the lack of detailed story left me disappointed. Reading the story from the lawyer's view did not give us an opportunity to really travel the road to enlightenment. I felt I was reading the summary, not the story.

A movie of the book is coming out soon. I dare say, I see an immense opprtunity for the movie to outshine the book.

Book Description

The infant management concepts presented in this book have found favor with over two million parents and twice as many contented babies. On Becoming Babywise brings hope to the tired and bewildered parents looking for an alternative to sleepless nights and fussy babies. The Babywise Parent Directed Feeding concept has enough structure to bring security and order to your baby's world, yet enough flexibility to give mom freedom to respond to any need at any time. It teaches parents how to lovingly guide their baby's day rather than be guided or enslaved to the infant's unknown needs. The information contained within On Becoming Babywise is loaded with success. Comprehensive breast-feeding follow-up surveys spanning three countries, of mothers using the PDF method verify that as a result of the PDF concepts, 88% breast-feed, compared to the national average of only 54% (from the National Center for Health Statistics). Of these breast-feeding mothers, 80% of them breast-feed exclusively without a formula complement. And while 70% of our mothers are still breast-feeding after six months, the national average encourage to follow demand feeding without any guidelines is only 20%. The mean average time of breast-feeding for PDF moms is 33 1/2 weeks, well above the national average. Over 50% of PDF mothers extend their breast-feeding toward and well into the first year. Added to these statistics is another critical factor. The average breast-fed PDF baby sleeps continuously through night seven to eight hours between weeks seven and nine. Healthy sleep in infants is analogous to healthy growth and development. Find out for yourself why a world of parents and pediatricians utilize the concepts found in On Becoming Babywise.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous and manipulative.......2007-10-16

I bought the book, I read the book, I threw it in the trash.

When my son was born I followed his cues and fed him when he was hungry. Over the next month I could see a sleeping and feeding pattern emerge. He ate and slept at around the same time every day, within the hour, and that was fine with me.

My sister-in-law used Baby Wise with her son, born a few months before my son. She was so hung up on keeping him on a schedule that when mealtime came around he was famished, and would suck down his formula so fast that she would have to give him more. At two weeks old he was taking six oz. of formula - the dr. had to tell her to cut back. By two months old he was enormous and has been ever since. Before a year old he was wearing a size 5 diaper - and no, there are no giants in our family. I'm not talking bone structure, I'm talking fat. So please take note that this method can also result in over-eating.

Certainly it is important to learn to distinguish hunger cues from other types of behavior. The book says to feed your baby when he's hungry, but at the same time emphasizes and reiterates the importance of a feeding schedule. If you are following hunger cues then you should not be worried about watching the clock.

The language of this book is manipulative. The authors present scenarios of a baby fed on demand and a baby fed using the Babywise method. Of course the on-demand baby spiraled into misery while the Baby-wise baby slept all night and bonded with her family. The authors give no evidence to back up the claims they make in the book.

Do yourself a favor and follow the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines, or books such as the "What to Expect" series which follow AAP guidelines. Anyone can print their own book making any claim, as these guys have done.

1 out of 5 stars God gave you instincts - trust them not a book.......2007-10-15

Like many first moms looking for a plan to care for this new life, I read this book over and over, before my child was born - and after. I knew of the controversy that surrounded it, and was comfortable to follow the book anyway. I asked many moms who followed this book for advice and did follow it for a time. Our son is now 7 months old, and I feel compelled to write a review, even though I have never done so for any book in the past. There are some good ideas in this book, but my best days came after I finally put the book aside and learned to parent my baby by trusting my God-given instincts. Ask yourself this question: is getting your baby to sleep through the night the main goal of parenting an infant? If so, give it a try. My son did sleep "through the night" as defined in the book by 8 weeks by not following the plan, but his own cues. I found, though, that concentrating on that aspect of his development as baby-wise subtly proposes really distracts from the blessing of enjoying the miracle of a baby. Consider what other goals of parenting an infant you might have. The author of this book refused to be held accountable by his church for his parenting books and course, and therefore the church has released a public statement about not supporting this book, stating their concerns with the material. Look it up first! There are also many former teachers of this material who now publicly voice opposition to the methods after having a child that it didn't work with. Find out why! From my experience, parents with easy babies do use this and have much success. There is nothing wrong with that! Schedules are great. If your baby is not a 'text book baby,' enjoy him/her and relax while he/she develops. Don't miss out on those precious first weeks and months by trying to squeeze him into a mold. I read at least 7 books about babies and sleep from all ends of the spectrum, and it seems that there are some developmental problems with baby wise. We have let our baby cry at times to learn to settle himself - once he was old enough to understand cause and effect (an important developmental necessity). I believe that it should only take a couple times if the baby is developmentally ready, not weeks and weeks. (And our baby was colicky!) Some babies do not have self-soothing skills until 4 months old. (Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child). I did find that feeding on a schedule was helpful, but our baby really was hungry after 2 - 2 1/2 hours. We did not feed at every cry, but did feed when he was hungry. So all of Ezzo's ideas are not crazy, but there are good reasons why Focus on the Family, the American Academy of Pediatrics, his own home church, and many other sources do not support this as a parent guide. Do your research first. But first and foremost, enjoy your newborn and do not confuse the process with this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book should be burned.......2007-10-14

Babies have died from parents following the advice of this godforsaken book. It is awful and a selfish way to raise your baby. DO NOT buy this book. Follow your instincts, trust your gut - feed your baby when it is hungry, sleep with it, she or he will grow up secure and healthy.

I wanted to give this zero stars but that was not an option. If you see this book at your bookstore, ask them not to carry it. If you see it at the library - mis-shelve it or better yet - throw it out!!!

'Babywise' advice linked to dehydration, failure to thrive
Matthew Aney M.D.

Expectant parents often fear the changes a new baby will bring, especially sleepless nights. What new parent wouldn't want a how-to book that promises their baby will be sleeping through the night by three to eight weeks?

One such book, On Becoming Babywise, has raised concern among pediatricians because it outlines an infant feeding program that has been associated with failure to thrive (FTT), poor milk supply failure, and involuntary early weaning. A Forsyth Medical Hospital Review Committee, in Winston-Salem N.C., has listed 11 areas in which the program is inadequately supported by conventional medical practice. The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Orange County, Calif., stated its concern after physicians called them with reports of dehydration, slow growth and development, and FTT associated with the program. And on Feb. 8, AAP District IV passed a resolution asking the Academy to investigate "Babywise," determine the extent of its effects on infant health and alert its members, other organizations and parents of its findings.

1 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2007-10-08

This book and it's theories is definitely not for everyone. In fact, my wife and I have yet to find anyone who has tried it and been succesful with their child because of it. For some babies what this book recommends will work very well but for many others, such as my daughter it will only result in a lot of tears and frustration. The recommendations in this book are very inflexible. The theories make sense only if you assume that every baby has the same requirements for sleeping and eating. As adults we don't all have the requirements or follow the same cycles, so why should babies?

What we ended up doing is trying to follow a routine of eating, followed by playing and then sleeping as the book recommends but using cues from our daughter to determine when she eats and sleeps. Our daughter has her own internal cycle and by following it rather than the clock she has been a much happier baby.

5 out of 5 stars Won't quickly forget this book..........2007-09-15

My boss at work knows that I devour books, and dropped this one off at my desk a short time back... The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success by Andy Andrews. I read it straight through yesterday (it's short), and the first thing I'm doing after this review is ordering my own copy. This is a book I'll not quickly forget...

"Gift" is a personal improvement book that's written in story form, similar in nature to a parable. The main character, David Ponder, is 46 and has hit rock bottom (or so he thinks). Deep in debt, fired from a menial job, and concerned over a sick child, he considers taking his own life so that the family can collect on the insurance policy. As he comes to after the car wreck, he finds himself transported back in time, into the office of Harry S. Truman during the Potsdam conference. Truman is the only person who can see him, and Ponder's appearance was expected. Truman's job is to present Ponder with a written "decision", a statement that David must internalize and live out. Once the paper is read, Ponder is moved on to the next person and time. This time travel happens seven times, giving David 7 pieces of wisdom that will change his life if he lets them. Before he's brought back to reality, he's offered a glimpse of the future of his home town, a future that was possible with the seven decisions that Ponder internalized then shared with the world.

The cynical reader will likely see this as a bunch of happy talk fluff that isn't realistic. But I would counter that it's more realistic than most other philosophies and self-help books you'll ever read. The people used in the story are perfect matches for each of the learning points, and you realize that a single decision *can* have consequences that reverberate down through history and time. And the people who make the decisions are often ordinary individuals like you and me. The only difference is that they *made* the decision rather than accept the status quo.

The path to success isn't easy, but it's a matter of decisions you make on a day-to-day basis. Andrews captures this truth in a style reminiscent of Og Mandino's writings. I loved this book, and will be revisiting it on a regular basis...

2 out of 5 stars Great Reading for the Dentist's Office.......2007-09-11

This book was given to me as a birthday gift, so it's not my normal reading fare, even though I do like self-help books. The story here is hokey: a guy (David Ponder, can you begin to see the symbolism yet?) is down on his luck, just lost his job; he has no money, a beater for a car, and sick kid; he just wants to end it all. (Can you feel the cliches coming?) Well, as his car spins out of control on a slippery bridge, he goes on adventure in which different (real) historical figures (like Abraham Lincoln or Anne Frank) each give him a message about living successfully.

Why do self-help books always have 7 messages? Anyway, the messages are helpful reminders of living the good life, stuff that probably wouldn't hurt anyone to be reminded of: Remember the buck stops with you; be a person of action, happiness is a choice, that sort of thing. There are no startling revelations, and the book and its messages struck me as self-evident and simplistic. One of the real advantages of the book is that it is short. So, if you are ever stuck in an airport, doctor's office, or somewhere else with poor reading material and you need to kill a little time, you might even enjoy it. Recommended reading by "Good Morning America" if that means anything to you.

5 out of 5 stars I like this book so much; I keep giving my copy away. .......2007-08-29

There is no new knowledge in this book, and there was perhaps a little literary license taken with the historical vignettes; however if the overall objective was to communicate a series of points on how to take control of your life, then Andy succeeded.

The seven things that you need to do to change your life are: Take personal responsibility, Educate Yourself, Be a Person of Action, Make decisions and move forward, Choose Happiness, Forgive others, Persevere without exception.

I can't see any argument that any of these actions, done individually, will help you improve your life. We've all been told these or very similar things since before grade school.

Andy uses an old and quite effective teaching technique. He wraps the information in a story. And Andy is a great storyteller. So while there is no new information in this book, the information is presented in fresh and efficient manner.

5 out of 5 stars I received a gift..............2007-07-14

I was given a gift about 12 months ago, the audio CDs of the Traveler's Gift, and have listened to them countless number of times since. I loved the story so much, I decided to purchase the book to compliment the audio CDs. The Traveler's Gift is profound and thought provoking. The messages are clear if you choose to see them. This story has changed, and continues to change, the way I see myself and my role in this world. If you're asking yourself 'why me?' then read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Reminder that Attitude and Thoughts Change Everything.......2007-07-03

I've been on a reading frenzy lately because I've been in a funk and needed to snap out of it. I had been allowing my mood to let circumstances stop my progress toward my dreams. Then I picked up this book my brother had highly recommended well over a year ago. I had bought it immediately on Amazon.com and then put it on my shelf. Last night I read it. Andy Andrews, thanks for the research on 7 great human beings. Thanks for taking the time to inspire me and I'm sure countless others. You did a great job of waking me up. The buck DOES stop here. No matter how dire our circumstances, we still have the choice of what to do right now, in the midst of it, and that decision will affect our future and the future of others. This book gives 7 secrets to living the life you always dreamed of but kept missing out on. We all have a purpose. Isn't it time we lived it and stopped letting other people and other things give us excuses for anything less than greatness?

In order to call themselves good Christians, many people have drawn overly flexible boundaries (unwilling to say no, always accommodating others' needs) or overly rigid boundaries (to the point of being righteous and judgmental). Psychologists and inspirational speakers Cloud and Townsend show readers how to set reasonable boundaries in order to follow the true path of Christianity. This book has become immensely popular, most likely because it makes personal boundaries easier to define and is filled with spiritual purpose. Some cautions: the format can be overly self-helpish for such a complex discussion and the authors at one point imply that judicious spankings may be an acceptable form of setting boundaries with children. However, many Christians will probably find themselves grateful for this biblical context of boundaries. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The full-size edition of this inspiring Zondervan title has sold nearly 1 million copies. The Gold Medallion award-winning Christian book, by two psychologists who've written a number of self-help guides, offers a realistic, compassionate plan for setting healthy boundaries with family, friends, and co-workers.

I am enjoying this book except I had expected the entire text. I was not aware that I was ordering a miniature at the time. I somehow overlooked that information. I will be much more observant the next time I order something from Amazon. I would suggest miniatures be described as such in a more obvious manner.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for structuring your life!.......2007-10-10

This is a wonderful help for structuring your life and not having bad feelings about saying no when you should. They have a solid teaching on how to view youself as being a good stewart of your life and giving when you should.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book, save your marriage, friendships, and self-esteem.......2007-10-07

Few things cause as much grief and heartache in relationships as the failure to establish healthy interpersonal "rules of conduct." This book is perhaps the best and most important read on that subject. James Dobson says that most breakups are due to disrespect. This book is about establishing respect, both for oneself and within relationships. A lot of psychological dysfunction and pain is caused by others trampling on a person's life, self-respect, and dignity. This book will show you how to lovingly establish healthy conduct in all of your relationships. It will save many friendships and even marriages if read, used, and thoughtfully applied to a person's life.

3 out of 5 stars Beware iPod Users.......2007-09-28

The content of this set of 10 CDs is wonderful!! The problem is that each disk has between 45 and 70 tracks which are titled: Track 1, Track 2, etc. So... when you download them to your iPod, they get sorted alphabetically and you get Track 1 (from disk 1), Track 1 (from disk 2), etc. You have to either download one CD at a time, or rename all the tracks. It was very time consuming and disappointing not to have all I wanted in an organized way to download to my iPod. Just be aware when you buy these CDs.

Book Description

Named the CMA song of the year, I Hope You Dance is a challenge to make the most out of life: "And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance."

This beautiful gift book by the Nashville team that wrote the song includes a CD with an acoustic version recorded especially for this book by Lee Ann Womack.

4 out of 5 stars Like Shining Amber, with a touch of Sap.......2007-10-10

Being a lover of this song and of gift books, I naturally couldn't resist ordering this book the minute I saw it in a store. The lyrics of Leann Womack's classic song is featured throughout the book, along with inspirational messages and beautiful photography from those who put the book together.

I did dock a star because the messages in the book that accompanied the song occasionally came off as a little too..mushy. I'm really not that harsh a critic, not of books like these, but the beautiful words of inspiration were, a couple of times, replaced by words that were definetly too syrupy for my taste. I prefer truly moving messages and stories to speak for themselves, but it occassionally seemed like the authors wanted to hammer the point home, overdo the sentimentality, and even make their message serious and cheerfully bouncy at the exact same time (trust me, that doesn't work.) For ex: throughout the book, the lyrics of the song are printed in large bold letters in order to differentiate them from the authors' separate words of inspiration. Usually, the pages featuring the lyrics had no other words on them, but at one point, right above the words of Womack's moving song, the authors' placed a bulletin that said, "Attention! This is BIG stuff!" Considering the fact that Leann's song more than speaks for itself and doesn't need any extra emotional boosting, I found those additional words annoying and almost jarring to the flow of the song and its message.

Elsewhere in the book, as I mentioned before, the sentimentality goes into overdrive. One page is dedicated entirely to love and begins with the words, "Love, love, love. You have to love." Again, I got that idea the first time. It's nice to compliment the song with additional words of motivation, but we don't need an interpretive page with every selection of the song. In another part of the book, while speaking of youth, the narrator says, "Ah, youth..new skin, wide smiles, clear eyes..the future so bright. If only we could bottle it up, sip it now and again.." This sounded more to me like a bad commercial for a fountain of youth than a motivational speech. I don't mean to sound cynical, I usually love gift books, but the tone in this one was sometimes just too sweet for my taste.

I also didn't particularly care for the version of the song in the bonus CD. There's a mainstream version with soft rock music and female voices in the background (which I prefer) and there's a country version with male voices in the background and the occassional awful twangy instruments; this one's the latter. If you like country music, good for you, but I don't like the country version of this song.

There are plenty of good points of this book to make up for the disappointments, of course. The song is wonderful, whether you hear it or read it, and some of the separate words in the book were lovely to read. My favorite part of the book's text, other than the song, was a beautiful little haiku that the authors wrote called "You", celebrating every individual. The photographs are also gorgeous, from grinning children to nature scenery. A beautiful package, altogether.

Now, if they'd only make a gift book celebrating the beautiful song "Private Malone"..

If you haven't seen Hay House's Lifestyles series of gorgeous gift books, there is no better way to acquaint yourself than with publisher/author Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. A bestseller for many years, You Can Heal Your Life has been republished with bright, beautiful illustrations in full, living color and exquisite typography--each and every page is a work of art by artist Joan Perrin Falquet. The timeless message of the book is that we are each responsible for our own reality and "dis-ease." Hay believes we make ourselves ill by having thoughts of self-hatred. She includes a directory of ailments and emotional causes for each with a corresponding affirmation to help overcome the illness. For example, the probable cause of multiple sclerosis is "mental hardness, hard-heartedness, iron will, and inflexibility." The healing "thought pattern" would be: "By choosing loving, joyous thoughts, I created a loving joyous world. I am safe and free." --P. Randall Cohan

5 out of 5 stars Abridged Audio: Mandatory Listening For All Humans. .......2007-10-21

I have the 2 tape abridged audio version. It may not be available anymore. The full version is probably OK but may not be as to the point. This work is mandatory listening for all humans. No question, no doubt. Just get it. Listen, learn, enjoy. It is a little weak in the area of responsibility. Follow this up with Nathanial Brandon 6 Pillars of Self Esteem and do the 31 week excercise to reinforce that.

I recommend the audio version. Listen to it at least six times in the coming year. You will pick up on different things that are relavent to what you depending on where your at, and as things change for you.

Filled with good ideas and concepts that can make anyone's life better. Louise Hay is Wayne Dyer on steroids. I think he gets a lot of his material from her anyway. Feel the love.

5 out of 5 stars SECOND TIME AROUND.......2007-10-13

FOLLOWING THE WRITERS INSTRUCTIONS, I READ THROUGH THE BOOK WITHOUT DOING THE EXERCISES,AND NOW I AM READING IT THE SECOND TIME AND DOING THE EXERCISES. I FIND IT AMAZING HOW MUCH I AM LEARNING ABOUT MYSELF. I THOUGHT I KNEW MYSELF AFTER 83 YEARS, BUT THAT WAS ALL THE OUTER IDEAS PICKED UP FROM EVERYWHERE AND EVERYBODY.
I AM NOW, REALLY FINDING OUT WHO I AM DEEP DOWN INSIDE. SOME I LIKE, AND SOME I DON'T LIKE. THOSE WILL BE CHANGED.

READING HER LIFE AND HOW SHE CHANGED, IS THE MOST AMAZING THING I HAVE EVER READ.

Wonderful information that can apply to anyone's life...how to change your life and get rid of all your excess mental baggage. A definite help book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-09-21

I couldn't put this book down. It was an easy read and I have shared its contents with everyone I come in contact with. I carry it with me and re-read various sections daily to keep the information fresh in my mind. As I apply the principles I see a change in my life. Thank You Louise Hay. I wish I had found this book a long time ago!

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Those Working with Individuals in Distress.......2007-09-18

As a coach and a psychotherapist, I refer to this book in work with my clients very frequently (several times per week), and find it invaluable in helping individuals open to and receive the idea that their illness or physical situation has an underlying meaning that is critical to understand. Ms. Hay articulates the potential underlying problem so clearly and concisely, that my clients are often dumbfounded at the relevance of the message to their emotional challenges at the time. This material educates in a way that's also compassionate and empathic, which is essential in helping people move forward. I'm thrilled to have this book in my library and can't recommend it highly enough!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Some common sense, but much dangerous information sprinkled with politics.......2007-09-30

It's unfortunate that the American Academy of Pediatrics would use this book to push their political agendas about gun control. On page 389 it says

"The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly supports gun control legislation. We believe that handguns, deadly air guns, and assault weapons should be banned. Until handguns are banned, we recommend that handgun ammunition be regulateed, that restrictions be placed on handgun ownership, and the the number of privately owned handguns be reduced."

People who are buying this book are looking for baby advice, not political garbage. It's sad that AAP would stoop so low to include comments such as this.

They also make dangerous recommendations about how to put your child in the car seat on page 411:

"Place a small rolled up diaper or receiving blanket bewteen the crotch strap and your baby to prevent his lower body from sliding too far forward."

This is contrary to manufacturer's recommendations with car seats and any seat that uses a seat belt. In an accident the rolled up diaper/blanket would compress and cause the belts to be too loose, potentially causing additional injury or even allow the baby to come out of the belts/seat altogether.

I found a 1955 printing of this book in an old waterfront cabin and was struck by the care with which the previous owner had read it. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front cover and then again above the heading for chapter 3) made pencil marks on nearly every paragraph of the book, underlining a phrase, highlighting many passages with strong vertical marks, scratching out some words that she seems to have found superfluous and even x-ing out whole sections that apparently missed their mark with her altogether. Two rusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking at all. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's lyrical words are still relevant and presage so many of the themes of today's most popular books: simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman finding her place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had lived in the cabin had actually passed away some time before. Thank you, Eve, for your gift... from the sea.

Book Description

In this inimitable, beloved classic—graceful, lucid and lyrical—Anne Morrow Lindbergh shares her meditations on youth and age; love and marriage; peace, solitude and contentment as she set them down during a brief vacation by the sea. Drawing inspiration from the shells on the shore, Lindbergh’s musings on the shape of a woman’s life bring new understanding to both men and women at any stage of life. A mother of five, an acclaimed writer and a pioneering aviator, Lindbergh casts an unsentimental eye on the trappings of modernity that threaten to overwhelm us: the time-saving gadgets that complicate rather than simplify, the multiple commitments that take us from our families. And by recording her thoughts during a brief escape from everyday demands, she helps readers find a space for contemplation and creativity within their own lives.

With great wisdom and insight Lindbergh describes the shifting shapes of relationships and marriage, presenting a vision of life as it is lived in an enduring and evolving partnership. A groundbreaking, best-selling work when it was originally published in 1955, Gift from the Sea continues to be discovered by new generations of readers. With a new introduction by Lindbergh’s daughter Reeve, this fiftieth-anniversary edition will give those who are revisiting the book and those who are coming upon it for the first time fresh insight into the life of this remarkable woman.

The sea and the beach are elements that have been woven throughout Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s life. She spent her childhood summers with her family on a Maine island. After her marriage to Charles Lindbergh in 1929, she accompanied him on his survey flights around the North Atlantic to launch the first transoceanic airlines. The Lindberghs eventually established a permanent home on the Connecticut coast, where they lived quietly, wrote books and raised their family.

After the children left home for lives of their own, the Lindberghs traveled extensively to Africa and the Pacific for environmental research. For
several years they lived on the island of Maui in Hawaii, where Charles Lindbergh died in 1974.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh spent her final years in her Connecticut home, continuing her writing projects and enjoying visits from her children and grand-children. She died on February 7, 2001, at the age
of ninety-four.

Reeve Lindbergh is the author of many books for both adults and children, including the memoirs Under a Wing and No More Words.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book........2007-08-17

I found an original print of this book, and have loved every single page. She just gets it.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless wisdom for all women.......2007-08-07

My grandmother gave this to my mother. When I was in my mid thirties, my mother passed it on to me. Originally written in 1955, Anne Morrow Lindberg has captured a timeless understanding of the stages of life that women experience. Using the metaphor of the shells she finds on the beach one summer, Lindberg provides insight on topics like love, marriage, motherhood, the loss of identity, the subtlety of living and finding meaning in even the smallest events of life. Outstanding! Since I don't have a daughter to whom to pass this on, I only hope I can convince as many women as possible to obtain their own copy--or two: one to underline and keep on their nightstand, another to pass on to their best friend, mother or daughter.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book.......2007-08-05

This short little book makes a great gift to any women in your life. It is my favorite nonfiction book. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, ageless book of insight.......2007-07-23

My mother had loaned me her 20th anniversary edition of this book and i was completely struck by it. I was thrilled to see Amazon offered it and had a 50th anniversary edition! I ordered four copies for my friends and they were all delighted (they read them on our recent trip to the beach!) The entire book was gorgeous with a silver foil emboss and rich deckled thick paper on the inside.
This book is for all women and is one that could be and should be read every year to reevaluate your stage in life.
I absolutely recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh.......2007-07-11

I first listened to this book on CD and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It is pretty much just the musings of a wife and mother about her life and relationship with her family. She talks about her need for alone time, simplification of her life, and her marriage. I read it quite a while ago and I still reflect upon insights from the book. I would highly recommend that everyone take a chance to read this book. It's not long, but it is truly a gem.

5 out of 5 stars A Flunky Shepherd Looks at Sheep Through God's Eyes.......2007-10-10

I purchased this book for its spiritual content, but this purchase coincided with our aquisition of three sheep on our small farm. The author takes the reader through intricate descriptions of what each verse of Psalms 23 means to the responsible, loving, busy, toiling Mediterranean shepherd. The deep spiritual insight is an amazing blessing. This book surprisingly served as a manual for sheep-keeping and by the end of the book we sold our sheep. What a blessing to realize that all we, like sheep, are difficult and complex and that God doesn't sell us to the first sheep trader that comes along. An excellent read giving insight into God's limitless dedication to us!

This is such a beautiful book. It gave me a whole new outlook about my relationship with Jesus, my shepherd. We even used this book for a series of teachings at our morning ladies meetings at church. I did not know all the detailed things that a shepherd did for his sheep. And they shall know my voice. Gives me goose bumps !!!!! Thankyou.Lois I. Cazinha

5 out of 5 stars Comforting Read.......2007-08-24

This is a wonderful book of comfort..and excellent for gift giving. Psalm 23 will never be the same after reading this wonderful book by Phillip Keller. His books are touching, real, and applicable.

5 out of 5 stars Building the manager from the inside out.......2007-07-16

This book is a great short read with a long term affect. The information you can learn from this book can build you from the inside out. While looking at the basic understanding from the view of a shepherd (manager/supervisor/leader)you can also see what you desire as a sheep (follower/employee). Take this book and look beyond the expectations of straight out forwrard managment techniques. No it will not give you the ideal bulleted words you want. You actually have to use your thoughts and imigaination, out of the box thinking. Then God through his words of the Psalmist will allow you to explore the source, God, as you become the resource. This book will do nothing for you if you DO NOT act on it. "Action words without action are no action at all."

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING by Norman Vincent
Peale is one of my favorite books . . . so imagine my delight
when I had the opportunity to revisit it recently as a result
of listening to the taped version.

Best of all: Peale did most of the narration . . . while some
could argue that his speaking voice wasn't the greatest (or at least
at the age when he read this particular version), I enjoyed
it even more so because he was the one doing the reading.

His advice from the book remains timeless; i.e., provided you
can get through some of the parts that might be a little
too religious-based for your particular taste . . . I was
able to do so and so was thus able to enjoy such insights
as the following:

* As you think, so shall you be.

* I don't believe people are born negative thinkers. All babies,
unless they're ill, are positive. Positive thinking is extremely
natural. Unfortunately, some babies are born into negative
households. Since they're very susceptible to their
environment, they absorb the negative impulses and attitudes
around them.

* Create a mental picture of yourself as a success. Hold on
to this picture tenaciously. Since your mind tries to complete
what it pictures, always picture SUCCESS no matter how badly
things seem to be going at the moment. Whenever a negative
thought about your personal power comes to mind, deliberately
voice a positive thought to cancel it out.

* Anger, fear and worry are among the most subtle and
destructive of all emotions. To counteract their power, fill your
mind with good will, forgiveness, faith, and love.

* Each time you feel a surge of anger, ask yourself, "Is this
really worth what it is doing to me emotionally? Do I really want
to make a fool of myself in front of friends or family?

* Practice happy thinking. Make a mental list of pleasant thoughts
and pass them through your mind several times each day. If an
unpleasant thought should enter your mind, immediately stop,
reject it and substitute a pleasant thought.

And, lastly, there was this idea that I do try to practice every day:
* Every morning before rising, lie relaxed in bed for a few minutes.
Let pictures of each happy experience you expect to have that
say, pass across your mind. Savor their joy. such thoughts will
cause events to turn out that way.

There's an excellent Listener's Guide that accompanies THE POWER
OF POSITIVE THINKING.
