5 out of 5 stars Parent Study Group to Ease Transitions.......2004-02-02

I have used this book successfully for the last two years with a 5th grade parent group we started to help ease the transition from elementary to middle school. "The Roller Coaster Years" is a non-threatening way to address issues in a group setting and provides parents with an excellent resource. The authors have an easy, calming style of writing that invites parents to read more. When we decided to try using a text, I was afraid if parents knew that I would have them read and discuss a book, they would not attend the sessions; however, once we began reading and sharing, our group size increased and more parents attended the meetings just to get their own copy of "The Roller Coaster Years".

I would highly recommend this book for principals, parent service providers, counselors, and parents in general who need assistance with managing the changes a child experiences during adolescence. It leads to great discussions about our own experiences and how times have and sometimes have not changed for our own children.

5 out of 5 stars a great help.......2002-11-13

This book is intelligent, common sensical and compassionate. It was a great help and answered questions I didn't even know I had.

5 out of 5 stars Good Raising.......2001-09-01

I think this book is a good book, and I'm not just saying this because one of the authors is my mom. My 18 year-old brother and I were brought up using the philosophy that when we grow up we can be anything we want to. And to this O'Brian fellow who says that this book was written with a "soccer mom" point of view I would just like to state that he is very, very wrong. For one thing, I don't even play soccer and that would also be very hard, living in the City. My mom has been through a lot, and has experienced a lot of what she writes about in her books. So if your saying that this is very feminine writing, then you can go talk to my brother about that. So there.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I'd have read this book earlier!.......2001-06-20

As the father of three mid- to late teens, I believe this book will be a great aid to young parents who have, or will soon be raising, the "middlers" (ages 10-15) that this book focuses on. My only regret is that I did not have the opportunity to read it when my children were beginning to move through this age group.

Had I read it earlier, I'm sure that it would have greatly improved my parenting skill because this book is practically a "how-to" manual for parents raising the 10-15 year-old child. Many, many topics are addressed by (what I feel, anyway) are two very readable and knowledgeable authors! Success in school, friendship & peer pressure, helping with the selection of appropriate media, drug and alcohol use, sexual awakening, and appearance anxiety are just some of the topics that are addressed in the book.

The book is a very fast "read" and is written in a light-hearted, yet informative manner. Humor and "street-talk" are used appropriately and effectively. The authors have certainly done their research and share a great deal of relevant and "eye-popping" survey material. Much of the material comes from the National Middle School Association, which also gives the book it "seal of approval".

I wholeheartedly recommend it to all parents who have children approaching those difficult high school years. You'll learn a lot of effective communication and parenting tricks which will make you a more effective parent, while at the same time making it easier for you and your "middler" to peacefully (and happily) progress through these trying 6 years! 5 stars!

3 out of 5 stars Women Authors with Feminine Points of View.......2000-07-07

I'm a Big Brother and I bought this book to assist me with my 12 yr. old Little Brother. I returned it when I found it was a book written from a very feminine, "soccer mom-ish" point of view. If you're a man looking for a good book about a middle school boy, look elsewhere. The authors recommend treating your boy's issues from a feminine perspective. Instead get a book by Gurian or Pollack. (On the plus side, and the reason I gave it 3 stars, I do have to say that the authors did a thorough job covering all of a middle schooler's relevant issues...)

3 out of 5 stars More of a handy reference.......2001-12-13

Rather than providing a multitude of new insight into the game play of 1999's best selling game, this guide offers lists and hints for the scenarios, rides, and features. This book would have better recieved if there hadn't been more active user groups with their own game hints. For what it is intended, the book is thorough enough to be of sufficient benefit for those who either are new to RollerCoaster Tycoon or just plain like anything published about RCT.
There are some section detailing good strategy choices regarding placing ride lines and other items like janitors around the park. These sections are pretty good. The sections which detail the scenarios and how to win them are a little more vague. A better choice here would have been a discussion of how to get the most people to remain in the park or how to go about raising park values in general.
The other thing which stands in the way of a strategy guide for RollerCoaster Tycoon is the availability of cheater programs for the game from third parties. This book does well enough as a strategy guide but is reduced by largely external factors. In short, this book is mainly for the enthusiast who wants more RCT.

3 out of 5 stars A LITTLE HELPFUL.......2001-06-07

I agree with hotrod4x5 and not those that gave this book 1 or 2 stars. This does help you improve your rollercoaster if it's to intense for your guests. Another one is how to build better queues. The advice in this book keeps repeating almost in every page one like you should never put food stalls near an intense ride. The rest is information you already know. It helped hotrod4x5, it helped me, and it should help you. Go buy it!

3 out of 5 stars Ignore The Naysayers.......2001-06-07

I fully agree with hotrod4x5. This strategy guide does help you improve your rollercoaster if it's to intense for your guests. Another one is how to build better queues. 3 out of 5 stars Good book to help you get started..........2001-02-20

People have really bashed this book, so I thought I would give my 2 cents. To say the book is not at all helpful is mis-leading. Indeed the book is shallow, but it does offer some good advice that anyone playing the game would benefit from.

IE.: When should I use an entertainer? The book tells you.

IE.: How can I make my roller coaster start above ground level? The book tells you.

IE.: My roller coaster is too intense and no will ride it, how do I fix it? There is more, useful, helpful advice.

Ok, yes you could figure this out eventually after playing the game, but the keyword is-eventually. Get the book, find out now.

The bad part: The editor did a poor job, there are typos and grammar errors, but these can be overlooked. Some of the advice on how to beat certain scenarios is virtually useless, just repeating the same advice over and over.

Do you like the game and like to read? You should like the book. Perhaps the bashers don't like to read and wanted the answers simply listed in a Q&A style, I don't know.

It helped me, it can help you, go ahead, get it.

I would have given it 4 stars without the grammar errors.

5 out of 5 stars Parents empowering parents.......2006-06-03

We just finished a discussion group based on this book at my son's middle school. We had a group of 6 parents and it really was a great experience for all of us. We found ourselves referring to the book between sessions to help figure out what was going on with our kids. It really does clear up a lot of the mystery about what is happening in their heads. And while it doesn't let parents off the hook about setting limits and being good role models, it recognizes that some kids do make bad choices and parents shouldn't feel ashamed to go out in public if their kid happens to be one of them.

Parent involvement really declines at the middle school level and providing this kind of support for parents is a great way to get parents connected to the school.

5 out of 5 stars Solutions for The Troublesome Teenage Years.......2004-05-28

Sue Blaney has turned her real-life experience and research into an action plan. When her oldest child was in junior high, she met with six other Acton, MA women and together they created a discussion/learning group to encourage support and to examine issues they were facing with their teens.

Please Stop the Rollercoaster is an excellent choice for parents who want to minimize their stress and gain insight from experts and real-life parents. If parenting is the most important job a parent can ever have and life is a school, then this is a textbook for "how to survive the teenage years."

    The contents include:

Why You Need a Parenting Program
    How To Use This Guide
    Adolescent Development
Parenting: Our Changing Roles and Relationships
    Improving Communication
    Friends, Culture, and Risk Behavior
    Personality Type and Brain Development
    Personality Type and Brain Development
    School, Parental Support, and Self-Esteem
    The Myth of Perfection
    Reflections

Each section has quotes, exercises, issues to examine and discuss, take-aways (identify what you have learned and what was relevant to you), and a "window" into the adolescent world (quotes from teenagers.) There is also additional support through a website listed in the book.

In the first chapter, Adolescent Development, we find a brief discussion about how a teenager is changing dramatically. This is followed by a question and then there is room for you to note changes you are observing. After turning the page you will find an "overview and objectives" section. This tells you what you will be learning in the chapter and this is followed by a page of instructions like: "Complete the letter/vision exercise on page 12." This is then followed by an informative section on "a view of adolescence." Finally, here is a section called: "A Glimpse into Their World." There are quotes from teenagers and lots of quotes from various books you might also want to read if you have time.

"Don't worry so much if you don't have the answer to a question I may have. Just keep helping me find the answers." ~Charlene, 17

The first chapter deals with physical and cognitive development, self-discovery and identity, development and gender, mood swings, spirituality, ethnicity, conscience and fears.

Then, last but not least... there is a section called: Issues to Examine and Discuss and the Take-Aways section.

So, this is pretty comprehensive and the author takes this subject very seriously all while presenting the topics in an enjoyable fashion. You will also find humorous comic strips sprinkled throughout the book.

If you are trying to talk to your kids about various issues, like alcohol and drugs, there are informative sections that give the facts. This book does not judge or give "rules" for parenting. It presents the facts and then asks you to fill in your ideas. For example, "What is your stand on teen drinking?" There is some pretty interesting information on what teenagers think about sexual activity. You probably did hear some of this in the news. Wouldn't you rather warn your teenagers about date rape drugs and other situations before they occur? This book makes perfect sense.

Chapter 5 was quite a fun read for me with my interest in psychology. It deals with personality type and brain development. There are tests you can take online, but this book gives a good section that will allow you to quickly analyze yourself or a teens personality. It is interesting how my best friends are actually the same personality type as I am. This was all very enlightening. It might also help you figure out eveyone's personality and it just fascinating. I had a good laugh when reading about my own personality. Imagine the fun you can have with this chapter.

Since School is such the important topic, an entire chapter is devoted to School, Parental Support and Self-Esteem. You will find info on the Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences (musical intelligence vs. linguistic intelligence, etc.), how your teen can improve their grades, self-esteem and many more pertinent issues.

Wow, this is one interesting book. I'm very impressed. You will not only understand your teen, you will start to even understand yourself in a deeper way. Sue Blaney has created a gift for parents that will enable them to deal with the main issues of the teenage years.

    Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An ideal and highly recommended instructional.......2004-05-03

Please Stop The Rollercoaster: How Parents Of Teenagers Can Smooth Out The Ride by Sue Blaney (herself the mother of two teenagers and a Certified Professional Behavior Analyst) focuses upon the issues commonly confronting parents with adolescent children. The text of this thoroughly "parent friendly" manual is wonderfully accessible in both language and organization. Beginning with an extended explanation for why the need for a methodical approach to parenting, Blaney goes on to survey and discuss adolescent development, the change roles and relationships between teenage children and their parents; improving family communication skills; the impact and influence of adolescent peers, the media dominated culture, and children's high risk behaviors; personality type and brain development; school experience, parental support, and self-esteem; the "myth of perfection", and more. Please Stop The Rollercoaster is an ideal and highly recommended instructional and informational parenting guide.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the time.......2004-04-01

I was beginning to think my 15-year old & I would not survive the high school years, but now there's hope! Our group of 8 parents of teenagers just finished an 8 week Please Stop the Rollercoaster self-directed program using this book as our discussion guide. I can honestly say we were all sad to see it end. We learned a lot about why teenagers do what they do... how we as parents can learn to be more effective in helping them become adults we will be proud to know... how to love them through, rather than just survive, this stressful journey. I appreciated all of the excerpts from the various books about parenting teenagers - I don't have time to read them all, but have decided on a couple that I will read based on the information I found helpful in Please Stop the Rollercoaster. I encourage readers to gather a few other parents to work with. It is absolutely worth the effort. You find out quickly, "It's not just you and it's not just your teenager." There is great comfort in knowing we are all in this together. This is a great discussion guide. Whether your teenager is in middle school or high school you will find plenty of help here.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is Well Worth Your Time.......2004-03-24

If you only read one book for advice about parenting teens, make this the one! Blaney intends this book to be used by groups of parents who want to discuss parenting issues (I participated in a group and it was great), but if that's not your style then read the book on your own. Divided into eight chapters, PLEASE STOP THE ROLLERCOASTER helps you look at your teen, yourself, and your life together in ways that cut to the chase of everyday issues and situations. Blaney packs in advice and writings from the big guns of adolescent behavior research--there's lots of good resource information if you want to read additional books. More importantly, through a series of insightful questions in each chapter, Blaney has you take a look at yourself and your teen in order to figure out what works for YOU as a parent. There's no magic pill or secret code that will unlock the mysteries of your teen--rather there are good suggestions and solid recommendations (based on research) for ways to smooth out your life together. The book also includes true vignettes of things teens do and say, and I found them great food for thought.
While there's no instruction book for being a good parent to teens, PLEASE STOP THE ROLLERCOASTER helps you realize that you have what it takes, and shows you how to put your own skills to positive use.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide.......2004-12-18

It would seem a difficult and daunting challenge to create a complete guide to RollerCoaster Tycoon that could fully assess and explain all the small yet very important details in a massive game like RCT. Of course, the folks at Prima have, yet again, met and surpassed this challenge. This guide discusses everything, and gives a massive amount of information about each topic. In addition, it exclusively (I believe) features many useful and informative lists, as well as many useful strategies for effective game play. This said, however, does not mean that it's not fun to read, for I found it incredibly enjoyable, much more so than a manual. The authors have a subtle, suppressed sense of humor that helps keep the text interesting, while explaining clearly boring topics. It reads more like a book than a many other guides do; I could hardly put it down. I believe the only drawback is the fact that it is (except for the covers) printed in black-and -white, which can make the pictures seem a little degraded. Pictures greatly help the reader's understanding of the text. For the high-res obsessed, they won't be impressive, but they serve their purpose well enough. For beginners and pros alike, this guide is a great addition to one's shelf, and you may even find yourself reading it more than once.

For those who want more technical information:
220 pages (not including the three introductory pages), 21 chapters. In addition, lists of:
    1. All 40 rides with strategies and information for each.
    2. Tips and strategies for building all custom non-coasters(coasters are too broad to do lists such as these)
    3. All available scenery and themes, both categories, and the individual items, with prices.
    4. All attractions, stalls and stands, with statistics and placement strategies for each.
    5. Everything that can be purchased, with its price.
    6. Easter eggs (no cheats for this game) that have guests do fun things.
    7. Informative but brief facts for beating each of the 86 scenerios.
Also, here are some things included in the guide, although in the guide really has way too much to list.
    1. Detailed explanation of park finances.
    2. Ways to ensure guests have fun.
    3. Tricks for maximizing the efficiency of your employees.

Hope you gained at least some knowledge from reading my review, MRW, 12 years of age.

I recently purchased the official strategy guide for roller coaster tycoon and I really enjoyed reading the book. I've been playing the game now for over three years and the book helped me tweak my playing style just a little bit to really conquer the scenarios.

I would recommend this book to anyone. It is very informative and easy to use. It has a perfect sense of humor for the RCT fans as you read through the book.

I would encourage everyone that loves Roller Coaster Tycoon to add this book to your cart and enjoy reading about the game you have come to love!

On the trip they saw the jade circus come in to town. The first mate wanted to marry pei`s wife. So he stabbed him to get his wife. haoyou didn't do nothing , but watch. So first mate, Di Chou , was going to marry Qing'an .haoyou didn't him to marry his mom. So Di Chou got drunk on the night before the wedding. Haoyou took advantage of that and put him on a fishing boat. He was still drunk. He left for a long time. Haoyou saw his father in the clouds. His father told him to be a kite maker. So he became a kite maker. He made all kinds of kites. Then finally he sold them .He wanted to talk to his father again . So he rode the kite! Haoyou was close to the circus. He got up high. He fell down and dislocated his shoulder and the circus master , mio, fixed his shoulder. He also got knocked out. Mio was inpessed whith him and asked him to join the circus . he said yes he could send the money to his family. But his mom did not know! So the great uncle bo went looking for him. He found him in the circus. The great emperor khan was at the circus and saw haoyou flying. He was impressed. So khan and khan were talking and khan asked him to make fighting kites. He agreed. So he made two fighting kites. He was going to fly with his kite(the red one) and was going to fight chiggis (the blue kite). So they were fighting in the air. All he could do was back off after he swung his hatchet. He dropped it after a long time of sweating. It was china vs. Mongolia. The army down on the ground was fighting each other. No one hade control over the ropes. Chiggis rope got stuck in a tree and he fell down and died. Haoyou fell too, but landed on a cart of grass. He didn't want to tuch thec ground or he would had lost the bet his uncle made. He eventually got off and lost the bet. The mongals were going to kill him. Mipeng(a cousin) told khan you don`t have all seeing eyes. You are not all powerful. Khan said fine he lives , but he must be my eyes and in my army. His army had to go to a city, and Haoyou was going to drop a bomb on the village, but decided not to. He thought of him self as a sky demon. He returned to his home town after he crashed due to the storm in the area.He returned only to find that his mother worked at a beer house. He went over there and took her from there and live in the first mate's house. When leaving the beer house he stole money. In the morning the first mate had arrived and was going to kill him. He made a bet for his life. He lost the first time made an other bet and lost it again. He did this one other time. He lost. So when going to give him the money and other things he lost the first mate was caught with the money Haoyou stole, and went to jail. The family never found out and they lived happily ever after.

    3 out of 5 stars a book i never expected to read.......2007-04-17

The Kite Rider, by Geraldine McCraughrean is a great book in many ways. It was exciting, interesting, funny, and it's different. This book really made me think about things I never would have thought of. If you want to know more about this book, please keep reading.

    Character(s):
The main character in this book is a boy named Haoyou. Haoyou is about 12 - 15 years old. He is beginning to take upon responsibility. Haoyou is also very brave. If you don't believe me, well you're wrong... unless you consider a boy riding a giant kite, soaring above the clouds, and risking life and limb every day just to entertain people, not brave. Sound like I'm crazy? Sorry, you will understand soon.

    Setting:
The setting is mainly in the small town of Dagu, China were Haoyou and his family live. The town is at the mouth of the Hai River, and just off the coast of the Yellow Sea. Dagu is an industrial town, and is visited daily by many trade boats. The setting also includes many towns and villages along the Hai River.

    Summary:
In the book Haoyou is faced with many problems. First his father is killed when he is strapped to a giant kite and is thrown into the air riding the wind. This process is called the Testing of the Wind. The Testing of the Wind is when a ship's crew tests the omens to see if a ship's voyage will be successful. The wind tester is just someone strapped to a kite and launched thousands of feet into the air. If the kite doesn't fly or crashes the voyage can't disembark. If the kite flies with no problems the ship can sail.

Other problems occur when Di Chou, the man who was responsible for Haoyou's father to be killed on his flight above the clouds, tried to marry Haoyou's mother. But he is outsmarted by Haoyou on the eve that Haoyou's mother was to marry Di Chou. Haoyou got Di Chou very drunk, then enlisted him to a ship as a hand. The captain agreed to hire Di Chou but only if Haoyou rode the very kite that had killed his father. Da da daaaaa!!!

Haoyou's flight went perfectly, and besides the fact that now the boat would sail away, his ride landed Haoyou a job. A job in the Jade Circus, whose ring master happened to be watching the flight. The job leads Haoyou hundreds of miles, performing for towns and villages along the Hai River. Haoyou even got the opportunity to perform before the mighty Kublai Khan. Unfortunately, his flying gave the Khan an idea of war techniques involving Haoyou who was then forcibly enlisted into the army. But not for long. On his first flight the Mongols didn't understand the concept of "when it rainy there gunna be no flyeey." Haoyou was considered dead when he crashed into a river, but he lived through the event and eventually made it back home.

    Plot:
This story is about a boy that is trying to help his family get by after the death of his father. He gets a job in the circus riding giant kites thousands of feet in the air, the exact thing that killed his father. While at first he flies to make money, his flights become more of a spiritual experience when he begins to see and feel his father when he is flying. Even when he breaks his arm and loses sight in his right eye, Haoyou flies, for his family, father, the joy, the thrill, and just to fly.

    Recommendations:
To anyone who enjoys books that make sense in the weirdest ways you should read this book. If you stick to the same types of genre like fiction, I recommend this book. But if you get crazy ideas like riding massive kites thousands of feet in the air... definitely, don't read this book! You don't need the inspiration.

    luv-

3 out of 5 stars The Kite Rider Review.......2007-04-14

The Kite Rider, by Geraldine McCaughrean is a fairly good book based in China. It is about a boy named Haoyou. Haoyou's father (Pei) owns a ship. The first mate of the ship (Di Chou) had him killed at the very beginning so he can marry Qing'an (the mom); the boy's new guardians are Qing'an, the great uncle, Bo, a mean man, and the great aunt Mo. As the Great Miao, master of the Jade Circus, offers Haoyou the opportunity to make and fly kites, Haoyou and his family receives fortune, gratitude, and respect.
Another main character is Mipeng, a distant relative, a young widow, medium, and supporter of Haoyou.
He is influenced by his dead father to soar high, find and talk to his spirit. In order to see him, he must do what Pei always taught him and that was to respect his father, be obedient to his mother, and faithful to his ancestors. Some would say that respect is everything in this book.
Due to his talent, Miao also instructs Haoyou to perform in front of Kublai Khan who was the conqueror of the thirteenth century Cathay (China). Little does he know, this would be the end of his career. He was faced against a Mongolian boy, who tried his hardest to hurt Haoyou.
I wont tell the conclusion, you need to read the book for yourself.
    -----------------------------
This book is a bit to verbose. This 307 page novel can easily be finished in about half that. My opinion is that it is well written and somewhat enjoyable book besides this factor. When you have a lot of free time on you hands, read this book, or just a better book. In some parts though, you might be bored to death as I was.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Buy.......2007-01-10

My husband and I are rollercoaster tycoon fanatics and this guide was extremely helpful. We learned a lot about building coasters and parks. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who plays the game as it will give you great insight on how to improve your parks.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide if you can read.......2006-07-25

now for some people this book might be confusing because there so used to there little colering books but in truth this is a really good guide even though it does repeat it's self alot but thats just to make sure those people who dont grasp stuff on the first go get in the end. I haven't read the part that tells you how to beat the game so i cant really rate it but as for the rest of the book it does go much deeper into the other aspects then the manual did and the ride and atractions chapter is very helpful for pricing right. I read this thing in two days just to see what I got out of it and I noticed that I didn't get board and just walk away like I always did with the games manual which was good cause i did learn some really valuable stuff.

    so here's the summery:

Pros: easy to read, good info, cheats, a walkthough, and free downloads for things like coasters and building.

Cons: None really altough he repeats himself alot but thats about it.

Final Thought: A good buy for those who are having some trouble or just like knowing it all.

1 out of 5 stars So not worth it..........2006-06-23

    The directions are very confusing...
The subjects covered are unneeded and repetative...
The ride/shop lists are impossible to navigate...
The directions for the Scenarios are completely useless (especially La La Land, which I haven't been able to complete)...

    So, the verdict is...
Don't buy this guide. It's horribly done and is a waste of money...

    1 out of 5 stars Deeply Disappointed.......2005-10-29

I bought this to use with our church Youth Group (a combination of Jr. & Sr. High) and was very disappointed. The clips were so much less that what we expected.

For one lesson it was just some teenage boy playing tennis, then twister, then rafting all by himself. This took about four minutes just to get across one little point on community, i.e. we need each other. The point could have been made in about 30 seconds and then could have moved on to something else. It was so slow-moving that we knew we couldn't have used it for our Youth Group. Another lesson was based on an old t.v. clip that our teens wouldn't understand and then spent the whole time talking down to teens like they aren't that bright. For the first four videos I just kept asking my wife, "Do these people even understand teens?"

We did use the final clip on peer pressure and it went over well with the teens, so I will give this product 1 star. However, I really didn't feel that it was worth the money. I still can't believe that this product is endorsed by "Youth Specialties." I hope that they do a better job in the future of really understanding of how to relate with teens.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT KICKSTART.......2005-09-21

CD has 5 three to four minute video clips to visually kickstart a Bible Study or Devotional. Clips are excellent quality. Comes with a book that gives physical activities and Bible Study guides for Church, Sr High Youth and Jr. High Youth. Very well organized! I would say the target group is Sr. High, but I am using it for Jr. High and it works well. The written material for Jr. High is excellent. Highly Recommended.

    Book Description

Seven years ago Wayne Tefs, a teacher, author, husband and father was diagnosed with a relatively unknown form of cancer called carcinoid syndrome. Rollercoaster is an account of his journey from the onset of the disease, his initial shock at diagnosis, his spiritual struggle throughout the experience and of eventually learning to live with it. Throughout, Tefs encountered a wide spectrum of people whose actions ranged from compassionate to lazily indifferent—all fueling him with the necessary combination of hope and anger to carry on.

Both practical and spiritual, Rollercoaster is a must-read, not only for those suffering from cancer, but for their loved ones, caregivers and even for those few whose lives have gone untouched by cancer.

    4 out of 5 stars Re-Inventing Life - One Man's Cause For Self-Transformation.......2002-05-29

Written through pain and with literary reflection, Wayne Tefs has provided an excellent resource for those struggling with a life-threatening challenge.
Tef's struggle is with a slow-growing cancer, which he acknowledges as "the worst possible thing that could happen to a person." His angst is further compounded by the realization that his cancer is, in fact, him, and a prerequisite to healing demands nothing less than a complete re-evaluation and restructuring of his life.
In this emotionally taxing journey for the author as well as those close to him, Tefs recounts the pain, fear, and rage that accompany him on his quest to deal with the single most important aspect of his life - his continued existence. As a confessed optimist, however, Tefs always leaves one with the spiritual support of hope, related with indomitable courage.
For those who would seek wisdom about life's trials, this volume has much to recommend.

    5 out of 5 stars carcinoid fighter.......2002-04-30

Tefs has written a layer cake of a book, in which chapters of autobiographical experience alternate with an imaginary dialogue between the author and his cancer. The dialogues are contrived, but escape artificiality and reveal some of the real pain and difficulties confronting someone with a terminal diagnosis. The autobiographical chapters relate Tef's struggle with cancer to contemporaneous events in his life: his divorce, the birth of a child, the triumphs and defeats of his professional career. Cancer undermines our existence and its unwelcome introduction into our lives not only threatens ultimate defeat but also warps our self-image and self-confidence. Tefs recognizes this and struggles with the threat to his athletic, manly, capable and confident self-image, eventually defeating this threat without resorting to the seduction of denial.

This book is about carcinoid cancer from the inside out, by a teacher of literature, and is well crafted without being oppressively literary. The story is told straightforwardly and with courage.

5 out of 5 stars Rollercoaster: A Cancer Journey by Wayne Tefs.......2002-04-27

This book is a must read for everyone, and their families, dealing with any kind of cancer -- and especially the rare neuro-endocrine cancer called Carcinoid.
After reading the book I hope people will search the internet for the web pages that have solid medical information....

5 out of 5 stars Rollercoaster: a cancer journey by Wayne Tefs.......2002-04-27

I devoured this book, staying up quite late to do so.
The author is very correct in telling how many many people diagnosed with an unusual and rare cancer react when they
    learn they have Carcinoid.
As another person who was diagnosed in 1995, and who has
been very proactive in my treatment, I recommend this book
highly to all dealing with cancer -- not just the patients, but
also family members and friends. There is a great deal of very
useful and helpful information in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Practical & Spiritual; A must Read for all touched by cancer.......2002-04-23

The magnetism of Wayne Tefs' written odyssey with his own carcinoid cancer was so intense for me that I was compelled to read his book from cover to cover before putting it down. Everything rings true. He eloquently yet succinctly and with simplicity expresses all the facts and feelings, I have heard so often from many carcinoid patients. The often unspoken or even uncrystallized thoughts and feelings, of carcinoid, patient are expressed clearly by the author. Though he feared that the tone of his book may portray him as a pompous pedagogue he came across as a humble, truthful and well spoken messenger. This book will be of tremendous interest to all concerned with carcinoid as well as other types cancers.

1 out of 5 stars unbalanced and often sparse.......2002-11-02

While it contains some useful information, this book is rather haphazardly written. Some years are beyond skimpy, and the information is in several areas dubious at best, if not blatantly erroneous. The anonymous author's tone is occasionally supercilious (think Joe Queenan), which is fine, if you're into that sort of stuff. I think the author finagled a way to give himself the one good review.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed as a reference tool, but somewhat entertaining.......2002-08-07

I purchased this book as a background reference, and was disappointed overall with its quality. Each year is divided into categories such as The Movies, The Players, Music, Literature, In the News, Sports, Television, and Fads & Fashion. The information provided for each section is sporadic and, in some cases, nonexistent. For instance, the movie Peyton Place is mentioned (1957) as is the television series (1964), but there is no mention of the book's publication in 1956. In fact there is only one book mentioned for that year and others, and no Literature entry at all for several years. (The '50s are particularly skimpy.) Apparently the only noteworthy happening during 1961 in the world of books was Hemingway's suicide. The subtitle claims "a roller coaster ride through six decades of pop culture in America," but it starts in the 1950s and ends with the year 2000. Isn't that five decades plus one year? Some entries are more review than revelation, and the psedonymous Biddle (it's not wonder a fake name was needed) calls Raiders of the Lost Ark "loud and crass," Braveheart a "depressing downer," yet oozes over louder, crasser, and far more depressing films. The author also claims the term "baby boomer" was coined as late as 1984. In addition to factual errors, omissions, and unwarranted commentary, the editing is slipshod, the text riddled with comma splices and huge paragraphs about the O.J. episode that slip from present to past tense about every other sentence. There are better books, It Was a Very Good Year: A Cultural History of the U.S. from 1776 to the Present by Vincent dePaul Lupiano and Ken Sayers for example, which is unfortunately out of print. It's far more thorough and even has an index. This book was entertaining at times, but that was derived mainly from imagining what sort of writer would use so smug and pompous a tone in such a haphazardly assembled book.
