Book Description
It can take hours to research family history and it is easy to become inundated with stuff - paper records, recordings, photographs, notes, artifacts, and more information than one would imagine could ever exist. The usefulness of the collection is in the organization - using computers, archival boxes, files, and forms to help you put your hands on what you need when you need it. Also included, in this book, are instructions on the best ways to store and preserve one-of-a-kind family relics.
Fifth in the National Genealogical Society's Guide series,
The Organized Family Historian will follow the same user-friendly format that makes the other books helpful at any level of genealogical experience. The NGS offers readers 100 years of research and experience.

"Read, Do, Remember".......2007-05-13
When it comes to family research I cannot stress enough the need for it. Our generation is on the verge of losing our heritage and not passing it on to our children and grandchildren. Who we are is a direct result of who our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were. It takes so little time to write down names and birth dates. Trust me- it doesn't matter what your life was like growing up if you can't put it to paper and share it with someone you love. Even the bad things that may have happened don't change names and dates. Let your kids know where their grandparents came from. Let them know when their great-grandparents came to this country and WHY. Our ancestors left everything and started all over in a strange, new world. They did it for us. Don't ever forget and don't ever stop sharing. Use the tools in this book and put your information down and keep it for future generations. Utilize the knowledge of the genealogists that put this wonderful book together to help you achieve your goals. Catalog your treasures - even if they're not worth two cents. Money isn't everything - but the memories are.
The Organized Family Historian.......2007-05-12
I think this is a wonderful, helpful book for the beginning genealogist. I would have loved to have something like this when starting out. The inclusion of a CD rom with the forms makes the book worthwhile in its own. Each chapter really helps a new genealogist starting out to get organized. There are explanations of how to keep records and how to research. Anyone doing genealogy or teaching genealogy should have this on their bookshelf. The book even helps you get organized to write your family history.
The Organized Family Historian: How to File, Manage, and Protect Your Genealogical Research and Heirlooms (National Genealogical.......2007-01-17
This book is a great help in organizing the mass of data that appears when you do genealogy research. Also included is a CD with various forms for logging in those materials. Beside that, the book offers great ideas for internet use and other search help. I am a beginner and was pleased that the book offered help geared to my level as well as more advanced information. Well worth the price.
Beginner genealogists buy this book!.......2007-01-16
I wish I had purchased this book when it first came out. It would have saved me alot of time and effort. I did learn some new tricks however and find it valuable enough to keep near my desk. Well written and easy to understand.
Bits 'n Pieces are useful.......2006-04-07
I agree with Michael K Smith's in-depth review. My very short impression is: The book contains useful information, but it is short on hard advice. If you've never considered how to file information, this book would be very useful.
However, I consider myself to be very organized and logical but I keep coming across a roadblock of how to organize female ancestors. When the female is a fairly close relative, I manage to remember the maiden name and cross-reference it to the married name. But what do I do with female relatives more than two generations back? (my mental limit). I'm not great at remembering computer-generated reference numbers. (And, my computer is not always on.) I need a way to track females based on names. I did not find any helpful hints. Perhaps this is a roadblock for everyone. I can only say I was dissappointed as I believe this is a common problem. There should be a solution in a book claiming to help organize info.
I did like the section on heirlooms, although it is pretty much common sense.

A Real Treasure For Grandchildren.......2007-09-13
This book allows you to easily leave a legacy for grandchildren. Can include generic info such as geneology, as well as very personal memories/reflections and lots of space for those special pictures you hope would never be lost. It is truly a way to give a gift of love.
Wonderful gift!.......2007-07-11

special keepsake. .......2007-05-13
My mom bought this book for my grandma to fill out for me when I was a baby. (1983) My grandma liked it so much that she bought six more over the years for my siblings and cousins. She added in as many photos as she could fit and some of the little pictures I drew for her when I was a kid. This book really means a lot to me.
Good Book.......2007-04-12
Good book. I order several for grandparents and great-grandparents. It is hard to find this kind of book. This is the best one I have found so far.

Essential book for your quilting library!.......2007-05-12
I have many books on this subject among my quilt books but this is the one I would recommend most highly. Takes machine quilting to a new level for home quilters. Her work is done on your ordinary sewing machine and the book has detailed information on how to achieve the results we all want. Do yourself a favor and buy this.

Fantastic.......2007-01-06
I gulped when I first saw the price of this book, but I took the plunge and I am delighted to have it. While Sharon Miller gives you some written instructions for shawls, she gives you many options so you can design and make your own shawl. I have been knitting for over 60 years and feel confident of my abilities, but Sharon is teaching me some new skills and I love it. I recommend this book heartily.
A must-have for lace knitters.......2006-08-12
Directed to somewhat experienced knitters, this book is a jewel. All the main patterns in Shetland lace are covered, providing detailed instructions and CHARTS! The various techniques are explained with clear pictures, and there are very useful tips scattered around the book. Not many patterns for complete projects, but the goal is to teach the readers to make their own.
Fantastic!.......2006-06-03
If you want to knit Shetland Lace and like to design your own patterns, buy this expensive book and forgo the others. This book is the bible of Shetland lace knitting. Finally, a good explanation and comparison between "knitted lace" and "lace knitting". This book is so good, I sometimes peruse it while eating breakfast.
Book Description
We all have fond memories of a favorite dessert our grandmother or mother used to bake. It’s these dishes that give us comfort in times of stress, help us celebrate special occasions, and remind us of the person who used to bake for us those many years ago.
In Heirloom Baking, Marilynn Brass and Sheila Brass preserve and update 150 of these beloved desserts. The recipes are taken from their vast collection of antique manuscript cookbooks, handwritten recipes passed down through the generations that they’ve amassed over twenty years. The recipes range from the late 1800s to today, and come from a variety of ethnicities and regions. The book features such down-home and delicious recipes as Brandied Raisin Teacakes, Cuban Flan, Cranberry-Orange Cream Scones, Chattanooga Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars, and many more. Accompanying the recipes are stories from the lives of the families from which they came.
The Brass Sisters have taken care to update every recipe for today’s modern kitchens. More than 150 photographs showcase the scrumptious food in full-color detail. Finally, the Brass sisters encourage each reader to begin collecting his or her own family recipes in the lined pages and envelope at the back of the book.

baking and heirloom!.......2007-08-01
I love to read cookbooks, and rarely buy baking books, but this was given to me and it is one of my favorite cookbooks. I like the older recipes, and their changes, and the stories behind them -- the recipes have all been wonderful, even for a non-baker like me --
a delight on all counts.......2007-07-24
"Heirloom Baking" is a treasure. It is just the kind of cookbook I really enjoy. The photos are gorgeous, the overall design of the book is appealing, nearly every recipe is one I'd like to bake (or have someone else bake so I could EAT it!), the Brass sisters are charming and the history and anecdotal information is a pleasure to read. This book gets space on my shelf for sure!
Heirloom Baking.......2007-07-04
Excellent cookbook. Lots of good pictures and very interesting recipes from all kinds of places. Anybody that likes to cook would love this cookbook.
very nice bakingbook.......2007-06-13
I like this book a lot. The recipes are good and delicious. Its lay-out is very pretty with lots of pictures (not of all the recipes). If you think of bread when you read the word 'baking', there are hardly any breadrecipes in this book, so don't buy it for breadrecipes. There are nice stories about the origin of the recipes.
It's not always easy to find a recipe (lets say for a cookie), because the different baking products are all over the place. I think a list of baking products by sort (cakes, cookies, puddings, pies, etc) would have made it a lot easier to find your way in this book. The index indicates that (p.e.) cake is to be found on page 40,42,96, 116 etc etc, without stating what kind of cake to expect on that page, so you'll have to look up all those pages to choose the cake you like. This is a shame for otherwise it's a very lovely book and recommendable for the recipes and it's good looks.
A cookbook lovers dream come true!.......2007-05-13
A friend of mine brought this book to work for the staff to browse through and all of us ended up buying a copy! The entire format is terrific, lots of old favorites, and the pictures!!...you'll drool from page one to the very end. My favorite are the little bits of information(some very original recipes on the paper they were written on years ago) included for each recipe and section..very heartwarming.
Some of these desserts we have all had at one time in our life...a real trip down Memory Lane and a great compilation of old recipes for the younger generation too.

William Woys Weaver has written an important book in Heirloom Vegetable Gardening--important for the kitchen gardener, the cook, the historian, and any American who might wonder what our forebears were up to when they sat down to eat. What was the food on their table? Where did it come from? How did they get it? All these questions are addressed in Weaver's elegant prose.
But there's another side to the story, and Weaver meets his reader there, too: Where is food headed, and what's an individual to do?
We have seen the rise of hybrid crops in the years since World War II. They are good for the seed business because the grower can't just let a few plants grow to seed, save the seed, then plant that seed next season. Hybridized plants don't yield seed that's true to the character of the plant, so the grower has to return to the seed rack year after year. Buying seed on a commercial level is a big deal, as is growing enough of it to meet the market. A lot of tillable land in South America isn't growing food for hungry South Americans, but growing corn seed for American farmers, and the biggest use of corn in this country is animal feed. Not many hungry South Americans get to eat corn-fed American beef and pork. In one sense, he who controls seed controls food. Or, he who owns seed owns food, and the highest bidder takes all.
Heirloom seed, then, is more than a trinket or curiosity from the past. It represents the chance of survival in the future. Should an as-yet-unknown plant virus come along and take out the American hybrid corn crop (something that has in fact come close to happening), it's the genetic diversity available in heirloom, open-pollinated seeds that will save the bacon. Governments maintain plant gene banks, but individuals can do much the same, and authors like Weaver show how.
What Weaver injects into the tale is the incredible pleasure that comes of growing heirloom crops and saving seed, and of eating from a table laden with 17th- and 18th-century foods. He shares his own history and his family's history, all of it tied up in gardening and sharing and caring. This lovely book is an extension that can reach into any garden being dug today. In other words, don't hesitate with this title, whether history, science, gardening, or a rich enthusiasm for constructive ways the individual can affect the future drives your interest. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Julia Child Award for Food Reference.
Jane Grigson Award for Distinguished Scholarship.
Vast in scope and erudition; unique and enjoyable.
In this encyclopedic guide to the history and cultivation of some of America's most treasured heirloom vegetables, food historian and organic gardener Will Weaver focuses on 280 profiled varieties of 37 vegetables and discusses nearly 400 others. He shares his over thirty years of original research from historical archives as well as hands-on gardening experience to help the lay person appreciate the fascinating history of each vegetable, grow it, and incorporate it into everyday cooking.
Some 100 varieties are shown in full color and more than 200 with line drawings by Signe Sundberg Hall. Weaver traces the development of the seed-saving movement and the history of the kitchen garden in America and gives a list of commercial seed and plant stock sources, plus an extensive bibliography.

beyond the usual seed catalog business.......2002-10-03
as an organic farmer of 8 years i strongly recommend this reading to all professionals whose selection is bound to a few seed sources. the book will infuse new knowledge in plant varieties and allow to improve your farming altogether. 2 examples are the mention of a vining watermelon which will allow treillising for better yield and the use of malabar spinach as superior in taste and ease of cultivation to all true spinaches..
Very informational and enjoyable reading.......1998-01-19
This book will inspire the successful return
of heirloom cultivars to many home gardens. A very good resource book for garden club
or school science projects.
Outstanding book helps gardeners choose heirloom varieties.......1997-11-10
Heirloom Vegetable Gardening by W.W.Weaver provides detailed descriptions of cultivation and cooking of hundreds of varieties of old and ancient food plants. His narratives are wonderful, and make very interesting reading. His tips on cultivation, though primarily focused on his region of the country, are complete and helpful. Altogether a throroughly enjoyable book, that provides insight and tremendous expertise in an area that is vitally important.

An Outstanding Addition to Any Masonic Library!.......2007-09-30
When I was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason, this was the volume upon which I took my sacred vows and thus obligated myself, and the volume which my Worshipful Master presented to me as his gift for my becoming the newest Master Mason in our Lodge. I've previewed through this sacred volume and as a Bible-believer, it is a special set of Scriptures with unique Masonic history in it that is both beneficial to both the new Master Mason and those who are non-Masons and are interested in our humble Craft. I should hope every new Mason should be given a copy, and if not, should seek to obtain one. We truly are members of the greatest Fraternity in existence and for those who are not yet Masons but are interested in becoming one, remember, 2B1 ASK1!
The perfect new members gift: Masonic Bible.......2007-05-18
This is the perfect gift for the newmember to our Fraternity. It has places for all the dates of the candidates degree's, registars for both officers of the Lodge and Bretheren present at his Raising. I give this as a gift to all my candidates.
Masonic Bible.......2007-05-16
Purchased this as a gift and a brief review of the Bible proved I make a good choice. The Masonic information was very concise but complete and informative. I am sure my son will cherish it when his work is completed and I make the presentation.
A Presentation-Quality Bible with Historical References.......2001-03-27
When I was made a Master Mason on march 22, 1999, I was presented with this edition of the Heirloom Bible. Not only is it a beautiful edition with many customary features for a deluxe edition of the bible but its wealth of Masonic references brought Freemasonry alive through the use of a book which I had used as a reference work throughout my life.

This is a book for the true tomato snob who is not content with the ordinary red beefsteak weighing heavily on the vine at the end of summer. Yellow, pink, green, and orange tomatoes are all part of this guide to heirloom varieties, many of which are only available through catalogs or through an organization called the Seed Savers Exchange.
Author Carolyn Male favors heirlooms that have been passed down through families, not commercially created hybrids. She does not hesitate to be critical, calling some varieties mealy or bland, while others send her into epiphanies. Although she makes gestures toward guiding the novice, this is a book for either food fanatics or experts who move in the subculture of truly obsessed gardeners catering to gourmet cooks and specialty markets. Throughout the book, enticing photographs of freshly picked heirlooms remind the reader that grocery store tomatoes aren't really tomatoes at all, sitting sadly under fluorescent lights, losing their flavor and color. If only they had been born in a tomato snob's garden; then they would have been treated like royalty. --Emily White
Book Description
Preserved by families, collected by seed savers, passed around among farmers, heirloom tomatoes are now being sought out by more and more home gardeners as an alternative to the bland sameness of commercial hybrids. And happily, these growers are discovering that heirlooms are not only vastly more flavorful, but are just as hardy and easy to cultivate as the hybrids.
Dr. Carolyn J. Male, who has raised more than a thousand heirloom tomatoes, here presents 100 consistently top-performing varieties for North American gardeners. There are red tomatoes, yellow tomatoes, green, orange, purple, and even black tomatoes--like Black from Tula, with green shoulders and a dusky rose-black coloring. There are cherry tomatoes, too--try Martino's Roma, a paste with spectacular yield and built-in tolerance of blossom end rot. For every gardener, no matter how experienced, here's everything you need to know to grow and harvest tomatoes with real taste.
Customer Reviews:
Will inspire you to grow tomatoes.......2007-06-13
I received this book as a gift, after my small 4-plant tomato plot fared disastrously last summer. 1 of the 4 plants produced decent tomatoes, while the rest died unceremoniously. This year, following the recommendations in this book, my 4 plants are all doing great, and I already have little tomatoes-to-be on 3 of the 4. For that reason alone I would recommend this book. I wish some of the planting and tending suggestions were a little clearer; you have to piece some of them together for yourself. Nevertheless, just two of the express recommendations on their own have made a world of difference for me.
The photographs and descriptions of the different heirloom varieties are fantastic, and will inspire you to pick out some different and unusual tomatoes for your garden. You don't have to be a tomato fanatic to enjoy and learn from this book.
100 Heirloom Tomatoes.......2007-05-27
Wonderful book written by Dr Carolyn Male. If you don't own or have not read this book, then you really are found lacking in life!
Great Book.......2006-08-20
Enjoyed the book enough to buy another to give to my tomato-growing son. Also hooked me to the point of buying three other tomato books from Amazon. The author posts regularly on various tomato websites. Great photographs. For the price that Amazon sells this book - you cannot go wrong.
Emily White knows "snob" quite well.......2006-01-15
After reading Miss Emily Whites "editorial" comments...it would seem that "snob" is a term that Miss White throws about because of close association with the same.
If you've ever wasted a summer growing crappy tomatoes, or would like to avoid wasting a summer growing crappy tomatoes, BUY AND READ this book.
100 is not enough!.......2005-09-12
This is a great book. I especially love the pictures with cross-sections of each tomato so you can see the meatiness before you buy. I also appriciate that the taste of each one is described in detail. My only complaint is that a lot of great tomatoes are missing from this book. I hope the next volume has about 500 varieties to truley reflect the unique color, taste and shape variations in heirloom tomatoes.

Best yet book on making flowers from ribbon!.......2007-05-07
The instructions in this book on making beautiful flowers out of ribbon, are clear and easy to follow. I have other similar books, but this one is by far the best! Truly worth the money!
Fantastic.......2006-07-16
This is a great book on ribbon flowers. The author explains how to make the flowers so it is easy to follow and you have a flower like hers when you finish. I highly recommend this book.
book + practice = nice ribbon flowers.......2006-03-15
I've had this book for about 4 weeks and have tried making a couple types of roses and, just last night, tried making a pansy. The directions are easy to follow and, after some practice, the reader is able to make some nice looking flowers. The particular projects in the book don't appeal to me, but I could see that they would be of interest to those who like the frills and complexity of Victorian-inspired objects. The author does provide a variety of ideas for using ribbon flowers that the reader can adjust to her or his taste.
Good, but not great........2005-09-22
I have to say I was very interested in this book, but it was not exactly what I wanted. I have yet to find a ribbonwork book that is set up as clearly as possible and is really designed for a beginner. The Artful Ribbon, by Candace Kling is a treasure for those seeking old fashioned ribbonwork and is still the best reference I have found. Overall, if you are looking for how to make very realistic Roses (esp. Tea Roses) you will be absolutely thrilled with Helen Gibbs's book. Also, if you are looking for a book to teach you how to make flowers that look as realistic as possible, this is for you. Bear in mind that you are only taught how to make the flowers in the book (Pansies, violets, sweet peas, poppies, canterbury bells, bluebells, hollyhocks, fuchias, chrysanthemums, delphiniums, carnations, peonies, and gardenias). Actually, the gardenias alone may be worth the price of the book! Spectacular! You will also be taught to make only specific sizes and flowers are mostly done on stems, which makes them hard to use as embellishments on clothing. The projects in the book are not as appealing to me as playing on my own. I am still seeking the definitive book on using silk bias ribbon and, while Helen uses it when she's on the Carol Duvall show, she doesn't have many examples in this book. This is a crying shame, since I have a bunch I bought from The Store on the Corner in San Diego. I've also seen Helen's last two books and they seem to contain basically the same material. Another book to check would be A Passion for Ribbonry by Camela Nitschke.
A history, a guide, and lovely flowers, too!.......2005-05-27
Wow, what can I say? I love this book. There's a great introduction to crafting ribbon flowers which includes a history as well. The instructions are so easy to follow it's a wonder that this hobby/craft is on the brink of vanishing for good! Not only that, but it's such a beautiful craft, too. I've used the book's techniques to embellish pillows, curtains, dresses, purses... you name it! Here's the great thing: I'm usually not even good at crafts! All it takes is to buy a cute little unadorned girls' dress from, say, Target, make a few ribbon flowers to attach to the dress and you have an instant artful creation. The things I have made (or embellished) have been such a hit with my family and friends. Also, Helen Gibb is an amazing person. I've seen her a few times on HGTV (which inspired me to get this book). I went to her website and sent an e-mail saying I enjoyed her segments on HGTV and she wrote me back a letter of thanks! It wasn't a canned response, either. Great lady, great book, great craft, so go get it!
