Book Description

This is the first in-depth study of relations between the Anglican Church and other faiths in the Prison Service Chaplaincy. It examines the increasingly controversial role of Anglican chaplains in facilitating the religious and pastoral care of the increasing population of prisoners from non-Christian backgrounds. Drawing useful contrasts with the situation in the United States, it shows how the struggle for equal opportunities in a multi-faith society is politicizing relations among the Church, the state and religious minorities in England.

4 out of 5 stars SOCIOLOGICAL THOUGHT WITH THEOLOGICAL INSIGHT.......2002-07-02

The authors are sociologists with theological insight. To my mind, as a theologian, this is the strength of the book. Beckford and Gilliat present a clear understanding of muti-faith and multicultural as terms which define their area of investigation within the context of the United Kingdom. But their inquiry is very useful to prison chaplaincy services outside the U.K. as well as to government ministries of health and social services. To my mind, it is significant that the authors discuss religious activity in terms of "religious and pastoral care" throughout the book except in Chapter 7, Prison Chaplaincy in the United States, where they discuss "religious and spiritual care." The introduction of a "spiritual" notion seems to be a North American phenomenon. Within an historical perspective the authors remind us of the unique Christian contribution to role of chaplaincy in a prison setting. They suggest, however, that future models of governance will need to take into account an increasingly multi-faith and multicultural context in setting terms of reference for religious and spiritual care in prisons. I would make the same argument for all government regulated health facilities. Their last chapter, Conclusion: State, Church and Diversity, they make the interesting observation that non-Christian religious leaders appreciate the efforts made by the established Church of England on their behalf. They write that "the evidence from our study shows that leading representatives of some faith traditions would like the opportunity to speak for themselves and to be heard in the corridors of power without wishing to appear ungrateful for all offers of Anglican support or mediation. For the same reason it may be true that members of other faith communities prefer to live in a country where at least one religious organisation is established in law, even if it does not represent their particular faith, rather than to be citizens of a secular state" (p. 218). In a loosely parallel context Bradley, in his book, "God Save the Queen: The Spiritual Dimensions of the Monarchy", has noted a similar attitude. "It is interesting that just as some of the most enthusiastic proponents of church establishment are to be found among the non-Christian faith communities...so the supreme governorship has found some of its most fervent defenders among non-Anglicans..." (Bradley, Ian. 2002:177).

3 out of 5 stars Better for a Brit.......2001-10-24

As its jacket describes, this book is "the first examination of relations between the Church of England and other faiths in the Prison Service Chaplaincy." Basically, the book describes how prisoners of non-Christian backgrounds (which is a growing group) are dependent upon "Anglican 'brokering' of their access to the prison chaplaincy." The book is fairly well-referenced, draws on a wealth of new data, and adds political insight to the issues. I was disappointed with the book b/c I did not know when I purchased it that it was almost solely focused on the correctional system in the U.K. Moreover, I was disappointed with the single chapter on prison chaplaincy in the U.S. The chapter was largely based on Federal Bureau of Prisons documents describing the intended structure and functioning of chaplaincy programs in federal and state prisons along with some anecdotal information (interviews with a few federal and state prison chaplains). Less than a handful of studies were cited.
At any rate, for British ministers or other individuals interested in religious practice and service in the U.K. prison system, this is a thoughtful and sometimes controversial treatment of the subject.

Book Description

Telling the Stories of Life through Guided Autobiography Groups, based on James Birren's 25 years of conducting autobiography groups, discusses all the topics an organizer faces while developing a program for adults who want to recall and write down their life histories. This book is ideal for adult education programs, church groups, social workers, psychologists, gerontologists, and others who work with adults who might be interested in exploring, recording, or sharing their personal histories. It helps professionals and trained workshop leaders at community centers, senior centers, schools and other settings guide group participants in exploring major themes of their lives so that they can organize and write their stories and share them in a group with others on the same journey. This exercise is rewarding for adults of any age in a period of transition or with interest in gaining insight from their own stories. Personal development and a feeling of connection to other participants and their stories is a natural outcome of this process. This book provides background material and detailed lesson plans for those who wish to develop and lead an autobiography group.

The authors explain the concept of guided autobiography, discuss the benefits to the group participants, and provide logistical information on how to plan, organize, and set up a group. An appendix provides exercises, handouts, and suggested adaptations for specific groups. The book also explains a systematic method of priming memories, including the history of family and of one's life work, the role of money, health and the body, and ideas about death.

At a time when rapid change has created a widespread yearning to write down and exchange personal accounts, sharing life stories can reveal a great deal about how we have come to be the persons we are. Telling the Stories of Life through Guided Autobiography Groups shows how to organize, record, and share life experiences through a proven and effective technique.

Telling the Stories of Life Through Guided Autobiography Groups
James E. Birren and Kathryn Cochran

I have led Guided Autobiography groups using, Telling the Stories of Life Through Guided Autobiography Groups, as my guide. The manual has proven to be the ticket to success!.
Guided Autobiography is an ordered, logical process of sequential steps that assist in writing one's life story. Each of the ten week sessions focuses on a theme that explores the important aspects of life and provides sensitizing questions as a guide to uncover the true life story. The purpose is an exploration of one's own life in a meaningful way that is
self-enriching and can also be left as a legacy for family members. The group process supports this end and provides the security and encouragement for self-exploration.
James Birren and Kathryn Cochran have provided guidelines to lead groups from the initial steps of recruiting group members to the final wrap-up session and saying good bye. Complete lesson plans are included that cover every feature of the weekly session. Each of the ten-week sessions includes a specific checklist, e.g., reminders to bring name tags, roster sheet, paper, pens, etc. to ensure success. The sensitzing questions, one of the keys to the Guided Autobiography process, are
included for each life theme. Furthermore, there are additional
suggestions and techniques for each session to stimulate creative writing skills, use of metaphor, and prompts to prime memories among others.
Having the training manual when running Guided Autobiography groups is like having a professional pack your suitcase when you embark on an extended ten week journey; nothing has been forgotten, the proper clothes for each occasion and all weather conditions have been anticipated, everything is mixed and matched perfectly, and all that's left is for you to enjoy the trip.
Telling the Stories of Life Through Guided Autobiography Groups does all that and more. Having the training manual frees you to fully engage yourself in the exciting Guided Autobiography process and grow along with your fellow travelers.

Book Description

With the acute need for affordable housing—a national crisis—we need workable solutions. In the U.S. there are an estimated 3.5 million homeless men, women and children each year. One in four U.S. households reported spending more on their housing than is considered affordable (30 percent of household income according to the federal government). This crisis affects very low- to middle-income households and companies unable to pay salaries that adequately cover housing costs—and therefore cannot recruit and retain their brightest and best employees.

Churches are effectively addressing the housing crisis from Washington State—where the largest apple producer has built 150 single-family homes for their employees— to New York City—where an alliance of 60 churches has now built 4,000 homes. In New York, the investment of low-income homeowners has transformed Brooklyn and South Bronx, dramatically decreasing crime, recreating the kind community pride that continues to infuse health and vitality to all sectors of those communities—public schools, local businesses, and thriving congregations.

The national affordable housing crisis is something congregations and faith-based groups often want to address, yet feel powerless to do so in the face of this daunting and confusing problem. Making Housing Happen provides workable solutions illustrated by true stories that inspire as well as provide a theological basis for a housing ministry. Each story features a different model of how affordability was achieved, a different denomination, and different geographic locations that span the United States. This book is about vision and faith—trusting God to do more than any church imagined in meeting the needs of homeless families, the working poor, and even middle-income earners such as teachers and police officers, who cannot afford to live in the city they serve. Its three parts, "The Foundation," "The Tangible Structures," and "The Intangible Structures" motivate the reader to action.

5 out of 5 stars What we've been waiting for.......2007-01-14

Jill integrates the stories of people across the nation who are looking beyond their own interests to engage through the challenges on behalf of those less fortunate. This is such a timely work in light of our escalating housing crisis. She brings to light those who refuse to "look the other way" who go beyond, "isn't it a good idea" or "someone ought to. . ." to partner with Christ's mandate to remember "the least of these."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for examples.......2007-01-06

In this day of pontification, this book is a welcome relief with real examples. It's practical and informative. It's a worthwhile read!

5 out of 5 stars Safe and Sanitary Housing.......2006-12-30

Wayne Lusvardi rating seems to be based on his disagreement with Jill's philosophy, and is not a review of the book itself. He is more concerned about the loss of his property values than with the squalor that the poor and lower middle class experience. He blames migrants, who cannot afford the $1300 monthly rents and $2600 deposits for driving up those rents.

The chapters in Jill's book illustrate the approaches used around the country that have worked and have made it possible for many to people to have access to safe and sanitary housing, something most of us take for granted.

The book should be read by everyone who is interested in affordable housing, even those who think that the Protestant work ethic and American Capitalism are in the Bible. It might spark an idea that is consistent with your own philosophy.

1 out of 5 stars Worldly-based housing affordability models.......2006-12-28

Through her new book, Jill Shook, a housing activist in Pasadena, California, has become the de facto spokesperson of the Evangelical Left's new social movement to combat the so-called "affordable housing crisis." The book jacket contains endorsements by many leaders of the Evangelical Left - Tony Campolo, Ronald J. Sider, and oddly has a preface by Dr. John Perkins, who doesn't fit the label. I found Shook's book problematic on both empirical and theological grounds.

In Shook's hometown of Pasadena the reality of housing affordability is the reverse of what Shook portrays. One-third of the population by the U.S. Census is low income, mostly migrants from Mexico (God bless them). If there truly was an "affordable housing crisis" for the poor, how could one third of the populous afford housing in such an upscale suburban community? By doubling-up in housing and gobbling up the lowest rungs on the housing affordability ladder, migrants have driven up rents, driven the working class out of affordable housing and driven the homeless out of former flophouses.

Contra Shook's notion that scattered gentrification drives the poor out of affordable housing, California court decisions, urban riots partly fomented by those on the political Left, anti-landlord enforcement of eviction and relocation laws, and rent control have made migrants into a protected class in the first concentric ring of neighborhoods surrounding Los Angeles. Moreover, Shook has no comprehension that her advocacy of inclusionary housing, "smart-growth," rent control, landlord divestiture of properties to the poor, and her opposition to gentrification actually will worsen the affordable housing crisis rather than lessen it.

Many of the housing projects described in Shook's book entailed the removal of older, "affordable" housing units at lower densities and replacement with luxury housing at higher densities, with some units set aside for low income occupants subsidized by the rents of other tenants. Since when do we consider the entitlement to luxury housing (or a luxury car or gourmet food) a religious or Christian obligation? Shook and her co-authors fail to tell readers that nearly all of the "faith-based" affordable housing case studies in her book relied on government funding.

Theologically problematic is Shook's disguising of the neo-Marxist advocacy model of Saul Alinsky and the Industrial Areas Foundation as what she calls the Biblical "Nehemiah Strategy" (Chap.15). The theological underpinning for her cafeteria of affordable housing models is mostly based on the Old Testament concept of "justice," by which she means wealth redistribution by coercive government. The highly selective use of Christian scripture in the book to support secular political methods and agendas is problematic.

Shook is oblivious to Jesus' observation that "man does not live by bread (or housing) alone." As such she doesn't recognize that religiosity (i.e., Max Weber's Protestant Work Ethic) can be conducive to affording housing in a capitalist society.

Her advocacy of compulsory "inclusionary housing," which diminishes the value of land of small property owners (not real estate developers) without "just" compensation, is contrary to the commandment "thou shall not steal." Even Shook's Biblical preference for homeless migrants runs against the moral of the scriptural story of King David confiscating a sheep from a rich man to give to a traveler in II Samuel 12.

The short chapter by Millard Fuller on Habitat for Humanity is worthwhile.

A Christian approach to such a complex issue as housing affordability in a modern technological society should entail the necessity of economic and sociological competency; but also an understanding that even our best efforts may lead to unintended consequences for which we need humility, grace and repentance not moral superiority and works righteousness.

    Book Description

Traditional approaches to vocational rehabilitation, such as skills training classes, job clubs, and sheltered employment, have not been successful in helping people with severe mental illness gain competitive employment. Supported employment, in which clients are placed in jobs and then trained by on-site coaches, is a radically new conceptual approach to vocational rehabilitation designed for people with developmental disabilities. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) method utilizes the supported employment concept, but modifies it for use with the severely mentally ill. It is the only approach that has a strong empirical research base: rates of competitive employment are 40% or more in IPS programs, compared to 15% in traditional mental health programs. The third volume in the Innovations in Practice and Service Delivery with Vulnerable Populations series, this will be extremely useful to students in psychiatric rehabilitation programs and social work classes dealing with the severely mentally ill, as well as to practitioners in the field.

      Book Description

The Cancer Survivor's Guide is the first book to offer a proven step-by-step healthcare program for life after cancer. Dr. Feuerstein knows firsthand what life after cancer truly means and his 7-step self-management system is a result of personal experience as well as extensive research, resulting in a program that's rooted in very pragmatic sensibility coupled with a sense of "realistic optimism."

As medical understanding of cancer improves, more people are surviving this frightening disease; yet survivors face many challenges long after their treatments have ended. They must strike a delicate balance between maintaining a positive attitude and being realistic about their health. This revolutionary program drastically improves the length and quality of life for cancer survivors, helping them to manage the variety of physical, emotional, and spiritual issues they face.

Cancer survivors can learn how to evaluate their condition, assess their relationships with healthcare providers, research their illness and treatment options, handle finances, seek alternative therapies when necessary, improve overall health habits, tend to their emotional well-being, and continue to monitor the long-term success of their survivorship program.

This book offers hope—and a game plan—for cancer patients and their loved ones as they look forward to the life ahead.

Not only is this a great book to give support and affirmation to those post-cancer survival, but it's also a realistic wake-up call for those that think they can go back to any self-destructive ways. Easy to read and recommended to ANYONE that has been diagnosed. Time to start anew!

The Cancer Survivor's Guide is an outstanding resource for patients, family members and friends who want to understand "what next?" I have used this book in a survivorship support group and the group members unanimously have agreed that Drs. Feuerstein and Findley have provided a thoughtful and practical guide for moving past and on to a healthier future.

5 out of 5 stars Useful tool for Survivors and Clinicians.......2006-10-30

This book, co-authored by a cancer survivor, is an extremely useful tool to help guide survivors (or clinicians working with survivors) through the months and years following a cancer diagnosis. I have used this book as the guideline for a cancer survivorship therapy group and it has been received very well by the group members. One survivor stated that this book "provids the how-to steps" for moving on after cancer. Step-by-step, practical tips make this book a welcome addition to the body of cancer surivorship work.

      Book Description

As anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer knows, surviving cancer is more than just killing cancer cells and getting through treatment. Patients must deal with the emotional, social, spiritual, and financial fallout of a cancer diagnosis. By helping survivors understand that they can't go back to where they were before cancer, Dr. Wendy Harpham liberates them to move forward to a different, "new normal." In a reader-friendly, question-and-answer format, Dr. Harpham (herself a cancer survivor) addresses a wide range of issues. Among them are understanding the medicine of reevaluation, follow-up, and prevention after treatment; dealing with the most common physical aftereffects of treatment; learning how to make decisions about work and school; relating to friends and family; helping children deal with parents' cancer; and coping with the practicalities of living wills and insurance.

5 out of 5 stars Support and Guidance.......2007-01-11

I purchased two of these books, one for my mother and one for myself as my mother had recently been through a cancer operation and radiation therapy and was given an initial good prognosis going ahead. Her cancer counsellor recommended the book for her to read.

My mother has found the book very helpful in helping her dealing with moving ahead after a life threatening experience. I have found the book helpful in trying to know how to act, what to do and say to assist my mother during her ordeal.

It is a very worthwhile book.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough but conventional.......2005-10-28

This book took on a huge topic: the period after cancer. There is too much in this topic to cover in one book. Dr Harpham did a thorough job with the areas that she focused on. Her question-and-answer format made the book easy to flip through-- it does not require cover-to-cover reading, which is excellent for slow readers like me.

Rather than using dozens of heart-warming examples of survivorship as in other books, Dr Harpham gives the information in a more linear, factual way. This is good for people who don't want gloss but just the straight facts (I personally would have enjoyed more stories and to hear her own voice come through). She touches on many real-life issues that most other books don't address such as radiation-related tooth cavities and risks of potential birth problems in pregnant cancer survivors. For this information alone the book is worth the purchase.

My only issue is that the book sticks with the popular, conventional, let's-not-rock-the-boat approach of the American Cancer Society. Such as when she puts "avoid sun exposure" at the top of a prevention recommendations list, without acknowledging the tremendous cancer-protective effects of vitamin D and the fundamental fact that all life comes from sunlight. Complementary/Alternative medicine is quickly presented with warnings of how dangerous it is, while the horrible toxicities and lethal side effects of conventional medicine are addressed with an assumption of acceptance.

To cover both conventional and CAM topics in one book would make an exceptionally thick book. If you are looking for information beyond the conventional medical model, you would do better with books by Patrick Quillin or Ralph Moss. But if you trust the conventional system, then this book is an excellent resource to get you through the after cancer period.

      3 out of 5 stars Time for a revamp.......2005-08-31

This book has some very good insight and suggestions for making life easier after chemo. But, with all the new therapies and drugs, this book needs a good update.

5 out of 5 stars the most helpful cancer book.......2005-08-18

Everyone with cancer or loved ones with cancer must read this excellent book! It answers all those thousands of questions you have about what life is like after cancer!

5 out of 5 stars I Found This Book Very Helpful.......2003-04-08

I found it very helpful to have a resource such as this book by Wendy Harpham when I finished my cancer treatments. The book helped me understand what I was feeling and why. I am now 3 years out and have just finished rereading the book. It has helped me, again, in my "new life" after cancer. I found that the book accurately explained the emotions I had been confronting. I highly recommend the book and believe that her book is a must read for any cancer survivor who has finished treatment, especially if you have just completed treatment, but even if it was years ago.

I took a chance when ordering this book but it turned out the very best book on the subject. This book has both order and a extremely well thought out plan. Both Scientific and reaches to common sense, which Barbara courageously enters into. I don't care what type of rehabilitaion you offer, this book will help. By all means.
