Book Description
Learn how to eat right after weight loss surgery.
In the past decade or so, there have been explosive increases in both the incidence of severe obesity and weight loss; bariatric-surgery. It has been shown that the incidence of bariatric surgical procedures has increased over 600% in the last decade. It is estimated that approximately 200,000 Americans - and another 200,000 adults world wide - will undergo a bariatric operation in 2006. This dramatic increase in operative cases is in part a testament to the safety and efficacy of the currently performed surgical procedures including the roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, and the biliopancreatic diversion - with or without duodenal switch.
Weight loss surgery is not a magic bullet, but with life-long positive lifestyle habits, including a healthy diet, you may be able to enjoy vibrant health you have never felt before. Once the surgery is over, there is a lifelong maintenance program to ensure not only that you keep the weight off, but that your body gets the right balance of nutrients. When you can only eat as much food as you can hold in your hand at a sitting, it is vital that you are eating the right foods and taking the correct supplements to nourish your body for life. What sets Recipes After Weight Loss-Surgery apart from previous cookbooks is the combined expertise of Margaret Furtado, MS, RD, LD-N and Lynette Schultz, a combination of almost 40 years' experience in clinical nutrition and the culinary arts, respectively. Together, they will help you navigate your way through the sometimes turbulent waters after your weight loss surgery, and will provide you with general clinical guidelines after your procedure, as well as helpful hints for easing your transition from surgery to your new, healthy lifestyle. With sections on home entertaining and eating-on-the-run, Ms. Furtado and Ms. Schultz will help you to feel like a person, rather than a patient, after your life-altering weight loss surgery.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for after WLS.......2007-10-17
I had Lap Band surgery and this book is incredible. It lists the different stages of surgery you can consume each recipe. They are not run of mill recipes or over the top. I have purchased two of these one for friend and one for myself.
Great Food Ideas.......2007-10-06
This is a great source of ideas for what to eat after Bariatric surgery. I highly recommend it
Where is the protein?.......2007-09-22
It should have tipped me off when the picture on the front of the book was toast with berries. Many of these dishes might be okay for well after surgery, but there was nothing that worked well for the weeks after. Overall, the recipes were too high in carbohydrates, and just didn't have enough protein. There are other cookbooks better designed for the specific needs that go along with this surgery.
Great Recipes.......2007-08-25
Not only does it give you great recipes but for me it helped give me lots of ideas for other things I could make.
Great for WLS Patients & their Families!.......2007-08-19
Love this book because I had the surgery and still like to cook but more so because non-WLS folks like my friends and family loved the food. I highly recommend this.
Book Description
The teachings of Taoism, China's great wisdom tradition, apply to every aspect of life, from the physical to the spiritualâand include instruction on everything from lifestyle (a life of simplicity and moderation is best) to the work of inner alchemy that is said to lead to longevity and immortality. Here, Eva Wong presents and explains three classic texts on understanding the Tao in the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of the body that provide an excellent overview of the three traditional levels of the Taoist teachingsâOuter, Inner, and Secret. The Outer teachings are concerned with understanding the Tao as manifested in nature and society. They are easily accessible to the layperson and consist of the Taoist philosophy of nature and humanity, advice on daily living, and a brief introduction to the beginning stages of Taoist meditation. The Inner teachings familiarize the practitioner with the energetic structure of the human body and introduce methods of stilling the mind and cultivating internal energy for health and longevity. The Secret teachings describe the highest level of internal-alchemical transformations within the body and mind for attaining immortality.
Book Description
Like many people, Kathleen Hall found that despite great success and material wealth, she had yet to identify purpose, meaning, and balance in her work and her life. She left her Wall Street firm and devoted herself to understanding the relationships between mind, body, and spirit, and between professional and personal fulfillment. Since then, she has studied with great spiritual leaders including the Dalai Lama, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and the exiled Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh. She has also learned from medical experts like Dr. Dean Ornish of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Dr. Herbert Benson at the Harvard Mind-Body Institute.
Inspired by those diverse influences, Dr. Hall has written A Life in Balance, a guided journey to joy, peace, and an intentional life grounded in the four roots of the SELF:
* Serenity. Find what brings us peace, and channel it into everything we do * Exercise. Align the body with energy and health through walking, yoga, martial arts, and more * Love. Build community and relationships that heal others as well as ourselves * Food. Pay attention not just to what we eat, but to what we experience through all our senses
Our lives pull us in many different directions; to find happiness, we must first create balance. Filled with wit, wisdom, and compassion, A Life in Balance will help any reader identify and stay true to his or her authentic self.
Customer Reviews:
Captured my Attention.......2006-10-26
Dr. Hall's book, "A Life in Balance", captured my attention within the first pages of the introduction.
On the first page of the introduction the author states:
"Our gas tanks are full, our bank accounts are full, and our closets are full, but we are running empty." I reflected on this statement, and with the exception of, "our bank accounts are full", I thought how true this statement resembled parts of my life and the lives of so many people I know.
Another example of the author's comments that caught my attention was:
"We have overstretched our personal boundaries and forgotten that true happiness comes from living an authentic life fueled with a sense of purpose and balance."
Dr. Hall shares her personal life experiences, and the experiences of others allowing you to see actual examples of what she is describing. She draws analogies from the seasons of the year and shows how the seasons of life are similar. She is able to use the example of a tree in pointing out how our life can hold the same balance by giving us the four roots of S.E.L.F..
We all know what stress is, but do we fully understand it? Dr. Hall explains stress, how stress affects our lives, and she provides suggestions for handling the stress in our lives.
At the end of each chapter the Dr. Hall helps you internalize what you have just read by giving you:
· Questions to ask yourself
· Suggestions to tell yourself
· Ideas to give yourself
In addition to sharing her training, education and experiences, Dr. Hall also provides many excellent resources including website addresses, and book references, plus she offers her own 25 Tips to a Life in Balance.
If you apply the techniques and practical suggestions found throughout the book, it will assist you in living "your life in balance of true happiness". I would recommend this book not only for people who feel their life is out of balance, but also for anyone who experiences stress in their day to day life. Truly an inspiring book on life!
Well-reasoned approach to work-life balance.......2006-08-07
Author Kathleen A. Hall explains how to develop strength, mental and physical flexibility, focus and happiness by nourishing what she calls the "roots of self." She offers a well-reasoned, well-researched approach to creating a harmonious work-life balance. Drawing from a broad range of disciplines, she makes the findings of mind-body medicine easy to understand, and shows that small, incremental changes easily within your grasp may add up to significant life changes. Though her style can be a tad repetitive, we recommend this book to stressed-out, overwhelmed workers and managers as a reliable, one-volume compendium of diverse health and happiness advice.
A pathway to getting things in perspective and balance.......2006-05-31
As one would surmise from the title, this is a book about establishing and keeping balance in your life. One of the better self-help books that I have read, it includes sections on Happiness and Health, Seasons of Your Life, Focusing Inward for Happiness, Stress and Stress Busting, Poisons that Kill the Roots of Your Happiness (fear, anger, hate, pessimism, apathy, greed, etc.), Establishing Serenity, Exercise and it's Gift to Your Body and Spirit, Love and Intimacy, and Nourishment. It is all about living life intentionally with purpose and balance. A Life in Balance is a recommended read.
A guide which blends in teachings from the world's great spiritual thinkers with insights on health and lasting happiness.......2006-04-05
Kathleen Hall found great success in her life but had yet to identify a real purpose and meaning to it: her survey of relationships between mind, body and spirit results in a guide which blends in teachings from the world's great spiritual thinkers with insights on health and lasting happiness. Chapters discuss how to create and foster calm and serenity in daily life, use exercise to restore health and energy, and understand the impact of food choices on mental and physical well-being.
The acorn already knows its purpose is to become an oak tree.......2006-04-03
Kathleen Hall is a brilliant writer who has the ability to distill and analyze exactly why most of us are in a constant state of emotional, psychological, spiritual, or physical turmoil. Her new book, "A Life In Balance", explains in plain and simple language how fear, stress, and being externally controlled by what is going on around us hinders our attainment of happiness and fulfillment. Through empirical research, observation, common sense and a candid peek into her own colorful life, Kathleen gently guides us to look inward and to evaluate how we're living. She helps us learn to eliminate debilitating fear and unhealthy lifestyles while we set new standards for discovering happiness and a true sense of purpose. Once you read her formula for achieving happiness and re-discovering passion in your life, the truth will set you free!
Book Description
Children Do Not Live by Macaroni and Cheese Alone.
As a parent, you have roughly eighteen years to imprint life’s basic lessons onto the heart of your child: from the need to put the milk back in the refrigerator to the value of turning in school assignments on time. Above all, you want your child to have a dynamic, living faith–a rock-solid belief system.
How does a parent ascend to such lofty heights while tethered to piles of laundry, unpaid bills, and a yapping dog? It’s easier than you may think. Just as Christ did with the disciples, parents impart crucial lessons in the midst of ordinary, everyday life. So, pull up a chair and discover how you can turn seemingly unremarkable, daily moments into opportunities to instill in your child a truly remarkable faith.
The Natural Way to Feed Your Child’s Spiritual Hunger.
Pass the Potatoes. Pass the Meatloaf. Pass the Faith.
Since your child was a tiny baby, you have been lovingly providing food for his or her body, stimulation for the mind, love for the heart, and truth for the spirit. Yet it is as you go about the familiar rituals of life–in the very holiness of the mundane–that you may best teach your child about God and His ways.
Using the memorable metaphor of the family dinner table–where napkins illustrate the power of forgiveness and placemats protect our tables as Scripture protects our children’s souls–author Lori Borgman illustrates how to make the most of the natural teaching times in daily life and find creative, enjoyable ways to interweave spiritual nurture with the struggles and joys of everyday living.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful and humorous all at once.......2006-05-06
What a delight! A Christian-based book that uses dinner table terms to help families share their faith with their children. Biblical verses provide a foundation for the text. But the writer includes laugh-out-loud examples that could be from your own home. A light, yet insightful read. A deep and inspiring guide. I want to give all my friends a copy, even the ones without children!!!
Lori's Latest Has Made Me a "Best Buyer".......2004-05-06
I've finally found the perfect gift. It works for expectant parents, parents of toddlers through parents of teenagers--not to mention proud new grandparents! I've purchased three dozen since the book was released this spring. Its publication has delivered me from guilt. I'm sending it to folks I've owed new baby gifts to for, well, years. Talk about the gift that keeps on giving! Lori Borgman is hysterically funny, shrewdly insightful, and packs a punch. She tells my recipients what I'd love to say, but more eloquently and enticingly. Read it yourself! Buy it for others! Trust me on this--my friends are loving "Pass the Faith, Please."
What a great visual!!.......2004-05-04
I loved reading this book, as I enjoy Lori's humor so much. But I also enjoy the life situations she always uses to teach moral truth to children. Being a visual learner, I associated well with the "placesetting" idea to help jog my memory for important points. Chapter 7 is a must read for any parent--cutting everyday problems into bite-size pieces. Wish I would have read something this applicable when my children were younger!
Kids deserve a good "meal".......2004-05-03
As a mother and a Christian who's responsible for passing on lessons of spirituality to my 10-year-old son, this book was a blessing in itself and is a helpful tool to guide parents in teaching their children about God and His love.
While the world seems an ugly place - violence, war and crime abound - parents don't have to solely rely on their own wisdom to come up with answers of logic and reason to share with their children. They can turn to the Lord for help.
But what's the best way to open the doors of humility, respect, humbleness and righteous living to your kids, without pounding their brows with the Bible and polishing a weekly sermon without sounding like last generation's Billy Graham?
Lori Borgman, mother of three and author of "Pass the Faith, Please: Nourishing Your Child's Soul in the Everyday Moments of Life," uses the visual metaphor of setting a dinner table as a vehicle for passing spiritual messages along to the next generation.
This is a must-read and all parents should own a copy! Bravo, Lori!

Help Your Child Develop a Healthy Relationship with Food and Her BOdy
Customer Reviews:
A life giving approach to food.......2002-01-30
I really appreciated the information in this book. It is easy to read, understand and apply. I do not have a daughter but found the information very helpful in understanding my own issues with eating. I have used the information many times over when I feel like eating but don't know why, when I should be full. It has helped to change the way I look at food and what and why I eat what I do. I would recommend it to any parent whether you feel there is a problem with a childs eating habits or not. It has helped to make food a pleasure and a friend not an enemy!
Parent's toolbox for daughter's weight and image concerns.......2001-09-16
I found this book to be filled with great ideas that helped me to communicate with my daughter about her image concerns, things that she struggles with at school as a teenager regarding relationships, and all kinds of mixed messages she gets through the media. The book is filled with lots of charts that help me to know what to say as a healing response to her fears that let her know I care and understand her feelings.
What a relief it is to have a guide book that helps me to know what to say and how to respond to her concerns, and to understand how important it is to be able to give her a space that she feels free to express herself and to not feel judged as she shares her feelings with me.
Great book!
