Book Description

From the award-winning author of the best books on puberty — A completely new book written especially for 8-11-year-old girls, playfully illustrated in an appealing, two-color design.

Young girls before the onset of puberty have a curiosity about their soon-to-be changing bodies that needs addressing in a simpler way than for their older sisters. In the proven, trust-worthy, Madaras-friendly voice and style, this entirely new book now brings them the same kind of thoughtful, down-to-earth information—but at a reading and understanding level that's just right for them.

Responding throughout to real-life questions and observations from younger girls, Madaras explores the strange and thrilling changes that are happening, or about to happen, to them, including: the development of breasts, body hair, and body fat; the changes in their reproductive organs, both inside and out; their first period and all the complex feelings surrounding it; the unwelcome appearance of acne and new body odors; and, perhaps most important, how to respect and celebrate their unique bodies, even when the outside world is not always so accepting.

Lively cartoon drawings throughout make the book not only helpful, but fun to read, too.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction for "tweens".......2007-10-11

I bought this book (along with a stack of others) to begin a dialogue with my 9 year old about the facts of life. Of all the books I reviewed, this one most well suited my daughter, with its colorful (and playful) illustrations and conversational tone (she loved the "eew gross!" references!).

It adequately (and thoroughly) begins the discussion of how her young body is beginning to change, while avoiding any real (and not yet necessary) details about sex. Of course, it does reference the fact that all of these changes are ultimately happening to make her body ready for having babies....but spares her the gory details she is just not yet emotionally ready for.

We read much of the book together, and it is playful enough to foster a nice opening for dialogue on the changes she is about to go through. She has approached me several times while reading it on her own with questions, and has referred to it a couple of times when, for example, she was feeling some growing pains, and when she was trying to make healthier food choices while packing her own lunch, etc...

Overall, a winner. I'd highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Good As it Gets For Me.......2007-09-24

It was a very hard decision for me to choose a book and this ended up being the one I chose for my girl. Mainly because it has alot of information and fun graphics that help make this serious topic a little more light hearted. Some of the info is a bit much for my 9 1/2 yr old but I can see her referencing back to this book later. My important focus was for my DD to understand her menstrual cycle and what is happening. It's a bit detailed regarding the female reproductive organs which I think is just a bunch of big words for her now, but like I said can be something she can reference back to as she gets older. I did like it's recognition of how these changes can make you feel awkward but the author encourages her young readers to feel proud of themselves. This book could have been better if the author had explained intercourse but apparently she has a different book for that.

There were so many books and so many varying reader reviews from not enough info to porn for the same book! For example the reviews on the American Girl My Body book are glowing but for me there was no detailed explanation as to why a woman has her cycle, there was alot of fluff that was okay for younger girls but not a girl approaching puberty. I think that shows that this is a very individual choice for each family. My reccomendation is to browse here but go to your local library or a bookstore and look before you come back to Amazon to buy. I think the best book is the one you write yourself, but since that's not going to happen it's important you have a chance to look cover to cover for the book you know your child will be reading cover to cover several times over the next few years - good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Don't Forget Your Son!.......2007-09-15

I purchased this book for my 11 year old son so that he could have a better understanding of what makes girls tick. He already has a good bit of knowledge on boys body development and we wanted him to know more. This was a good general information book that explains the changes he is already seeing in some of his classmates.

5 out of 5 stars "Ready, Set, Grow: A What's Happening to my Body? Book for younger Girls.......2007-08-24

Great Book! Lots of good solid information for a younger girl of 8yrs.
We did not read the whole book because it was not information she needs right now.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book to start talking about growing up and changes.......2007-05-11

I notice some changes in my daughters appearance and I knew it was time to start to have some discussions. We have worked our way through two chapters reading together and talking about stuff. A heck of a lot more than I got when I was growing up. Hopefully this will help her get through these changing times

Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

Book Description

Who Moved My Cheese? Is a simple parable that reveals profound truths about change. It is an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a "Maze" and look for "Cheese" to nourish them and make them happy.

"Cheese" is a metaphor for what you want to have in life -- whether it is a good job, a loving relationship, money, a possession, health, or spiritual peace of mind. And "The Maze" is where you look for what you want -- the organization you work in, or the family or community you live in.

The characters are faced with unexpected change. Eventually, one of them deals with it successfully, and writes what he has learned from his experience on the maze walls.

When you come to see "The Handwriting on the Wall," you can discover for yourself how to deal with change, so that you can enjoy less stress and more success (however you define it) in your work and in your life.

Written for all ages, the story takes a little over an hour to listen to, but its unique insights can last a lifetime.

3 out of 5 stars Simplified change.......2007-10-15

Got an hour to fill? That's how long it'll take to read. As many have stated, company heads and consultant groups hand this book out to employees when there are about to be changes in the company. Basically, this is a very simplified parable on four different takes on how to deal with change. Of course at the end you are supposed to decide which of the characters you currently are. Sniff - you actively move about seeking change. Scurry - you move about and quickly adapt to the change to make things happen. And then there's Hem and Haw. Both resist change and stick to the old expecting it to return to the promised treasures. Eventually Haw decides that staying in one place with no rewards is not progressing so opts to go seek change on his struggling legs. The Hem remains obstinant and refuses to change and his fate fades away. Of course no one wants to claim they are Hem but most people are. One of my favorite bits in the book is the statement along the lines of "If you can't change, you may become extinct."

Overall this is a very simple take on how people can adapt to change in their personal and professional lives. Seems quite similar on how to change your personal attitude and outlook that is presented in Benjamin Hoff's "Tao of Pooh". If you're in a company that is about to use outside consulting, expect to get 'homework' to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-10-15

This is a fantastic book about reassessing your life and career. I've given it to friends after reading it myself.

3 out of 5 stars It's an OK book.......2007-10-04

Just like most of the people, I got this book from my employer (I hope it's not a sign of restructuring :)).
I'm afraid that I do a too good job of reviewing the book one would no longer need to buy it anymore. In essence, the whole book can be summarized in about 10 statements. In all fairness though, these are insightful and worth meditating on statements.
So, like I said... An OK book.

3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-10-03

The book is an easy and quick read but the story will put thoughts in your head that you will think about for years if not a lifetime. Life brings us all challenges so this book is for all of us... That is, unless your life is perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Genuinely Insulting..........2007-09-29

Genuinely insulting to the independent thinker. Yeah I know, it's been said countless times but I felt the need to reinforce that notion. If you're someone that's more comfortable being a follower and having your life and work environment structured for you then you're more likely to enjoy this book and find something meaningful in it. If you're someone that uses logic and reason to guide your decisions then don't waste your time or money on this rehashed brainwashing manual. This is a book written for unquestioning, mindless followers, not a book for leaders. But a tool that leaders would use to try and control their subordinates.

Every kid thinks about running away at one point or another; few get farther than the end of the block. Young Sam Gribley gets to the end of the block and keeps going--all the way to the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. There he sets up house in a huge hollowed-out tree, with a falcon and a weasel for companions and his wits as his tool for survival. In a spellbinding, touching, funny account, Sam learns to live off the land, and grows up a little in the process. Blizzards, hunters, loneliness, and fear all battle to drive Sam back to city life. But his desire for freedom, independence, and adventure is stronger. No reader will be immune to the compulsion to go right out and start whittling fishhooks and befriending raccoons.

Jean Craighead George, author of more than 80 children's books, including the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves, created another prizewinner with My Side of the Mountain--a Newbery Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book, and a Hans Christian Andersen Award Honor Book. Astonishingly, she wrote its sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, 30 years later, and a decade after that penned the final book in the trilogy, Frightful's Mountain, told from the falcon's point of view. George has no doubt shaped generations of young readers with her outdoor adventures of the mind and spirit. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars A Can't Put Down Book.......2007-10-21

When I first picked up this book,I just could not put it down! It's true there is no straightforward plot, but I really, really enjoyed it. After reading it(I also read the second book)I was more appreciative of nature and became very interested in trees and plants. I liked reading about what Sam did to live off the land. I wanted to run away and do the same! This was a spectacular book, yet I am still looking for a fictional survival book where the main character knows ABSOLUTELY nothing about surviving, and where he/she does not have luck as do many of the main charcters in other stories. But this was one of the best books I have ever read.

4 out of 5 stars Sam Gribley got so lucky in this book.......2007-10-07

I realize this book has already been anointed as a great children's book, and a great book for boys, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. My 14-year-old son loved this book when he read it in elementary school, and my 9-year-old daughter is loving it in fourth grade presently.

That being said, the people at Puffin dodged the issue of a child in the wilderness by making a cover where Sam looks like a teenager instead of the 11 or 12-year-old he looks like in Jean Craighead George's illustrations. There were numerous occasions in the book where Sam could have been seriously injured or killed, and George just blurbs or whooshes past them.

The back cover said Sam was terribly unhappy with living in New York City, but the book doesn't suggest that anywhere

I was impressed with the level of natural knowledge Sam possessed, and I was impressed that my children could come up with plausible ways that he acquired this knowledge. I considered the bit about hunger having an intelligence to be particularly clever.

Maybe the moral of the story is that as a parent, I could tell my kids without fear of contradiction that they are nowhere near as knowledgeable regarding the wild as Sam Gribley was, and that Sam was rather lucky in a few spots.

5 out of 5 stars By: Nicholas MB 5th grade My Side of the Mountain.......2007-09-26

My Side of the Mountain is a very catching book it had me jumping out of my seat the whole story!. It told you some facts about the wild and also it had a sad story of a kid living off the land. I learned alot of facts about the Catscill Mountains too. I think evrey outdoor kid should read this thrilling book. Its truth, fiction and wildlife mixed! This is truly one of my favorite books. READ THIS BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars Yeah for Sam Gribley.......2007-09-14

My Side of the Mountain is a great book. Jean Craighead George must have spent a lot of time in the forest. Her descriptions of the landscape and anecdotes regarding the animals are vivid. The only thing that doesn't ring true is the fact that a young kid goes and lives on his own in the wild and no adults appear to be concerned. A very enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars My Side of the Mountain 1959.......2007-08-15

Plot Kernel - A young boy runs off to live in the Catskill Mountain wilderness, taking nothing but a penknife, a ball of cord, an axe, $40, and some flint and steel. He fashions a home within a standing hemlock tree, makes clothing out of animal skins, and eats only what he can catch or harvest from the Earth. He trains a falcon to hunt, and lives with it for an entire year.

Though Mother Teresa's words may be spare, her good deeds are abundant. The messages in this lovely collection--directed at coworkers, sisters, and others eager to hear the words of someone who lived the challenge she presented to others--are sure to provide inspiration for anyone who reads them. The quotes, stories, and prayers are a testament to the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner's generosity and strength of spirit: "Good works are links that form a chain of love"; "I never will understand all the good that a simple smile can accomplish"; "Before judging the poor, we have to examine with sincerity our own conscience." Mother Teresa's words and deeds fortified and inspired the poor, the dying, and the suffering. These powerful messages, combined with black-and-white photos of this highly regarded woman doing the work she loved, make for a truly unforgettable book.

Book Description

The legendary Mother Teresa's work for—and among—the poor has become the yardstick by which the entire world measures compassion, generosity, and selflessness. Her words and actions have inspired millions of people from every race and religion and country to help the poor and needy, a legacy that is her gift to all mankind for generations to come.
From 1950, when she founded the order of Missionaries of Charity, to winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, and then, in 1985, being awarded the Medal of Freedom—the United States' highest civilian award—to her final days, Mother Teresa served the world as a beacon shedding the light of hope, comfort, and peace on all.
Mother Teresa: In My Own Words is a timeless testament to the power of her words. Here are the same quotes, stories, and prayers that helped strengthen and inspire the poor, the dying, the suffering, and the doubting who she met during her lifetime, and that will continue to strengthen and inspire all who read them.

5 out of 5 stars Actions Louder than Words.......2007-10-22

Even though this book is a very quick read, if you take the time to put yourself in her place through some of these short stories I think it will make you have a great respect for a person who did not write a book herself on how to make the world a better place, but rather inspired others to write about her ACTIONS, which no doubt affected countless numbers of people in one way or another. Overall, it is almost a prelude to learning more about her and, if you're so inclined to take her actions to heart, ask yourself why you aren't doing more good in the world yourself. Definetly would recommend, particularly as a companion to a biography.

3 out of 5 stars Mother Teresa, In My Own Words by Gonzalez-Balado - Review by an author.......2007-09-23

Mother Teresa - In My Own Words by Jose Luis Gonzalez-Balado
The legendary work among the poor by Mother Teresa has become the yardstick by which the world measures compassion and selflessness. She spent every hour of her life in service to others, even using the monetary gifts given to her by the church and the Nobel Peace Price to build yet more homes for the dying and homeless. She owned no material objects and did not allow those who worked with her to do so. She had very strong and sometimes quaint convictions, but as all crusaders do, made a statement to the world and has inspired many. This book was written by a journalist who knew Mother Teresa beginning in 1969. He was among the core of followers of the Missionaries of Charity. Mother Teresa herself never felt it necessary to write anything and you will not find any literary gems in an anthology of her thoughts. This book contains quotes, stories and prayers she used during her lifetime. Mother Teresa, who only spoke when necessary, was challenged at the young age of eighteen by the words of Jesus, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it unto me." One of the outstanding concepts found in the book is that at the moment of death we will not be judged according to the number of good deeds we have done or the awards we have received, but by the love we have put into our work.
Trish New, author of The Thrill of Hope, South State Street Journal, and Memory Flatlined.

5 out of 5 stars one of our current favorites.......2007-10-03

This, along with Something Special for Me have been top picks for our 3 1/2 year old for the last few months. She asks for them over and over. I love how this book tells a simple story yet illustrates wonderful family values without being preachy. I imagine this will be in the regular rotation at our house for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-05-11

THis is a book that I and my students thoroughly enjoyed. I love teh emphasis on hardwork and perseverance. Most children can relate to the notion of saving money to purchase something they really want to have. Written from the perspective of the child makes the story easy for children to identify with. The notion of harwork and perseverance is weaved through out the story. From the mother's long hours at the diner to the family's year of saving change in a jar. The Coldecott-winning illustrations allow the reader to feel the emotions the little girl is feeling and correspond beautifully with the text. The cover of the book is an outsiders view of the diner where the little girl's mother works. Ths vantage point lends to the perspective from which the story is told. I feel this is a story that can transcend time. There will always be the need for hard work and perseverance. There will always be hard times one has to overcome. The notion of earning and valuing material pocessions can cross all cultures.

5 out of 5 stars mom and grandma.......2007-03-13

A beautiful book, visually and story-wise. My children loved it, I loved it and now the grandchildren love it. It has drama and kindness and an appreciation for small things that make life rich.

1 out of 5 stars Another missing Dad.......2007-01-16

Where's the father in this story? With all the unfortunate divorcing going on in this world, I plan to inundate my child with stories about happy families with both a mom and a dad. If it doesn't work out for him when he grows up and gets married, at least I can say I tried my best. I'm tired of forcing the feminist agenda on our kids. They need to know that not having a GOOD husband/father at home is not a good thing. Also, I thought the book was boring and the chair was ugly.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for kids.......2006-09-29

I recently bought this book for my 7-year-old, and was really impressed by both the story and the beautiful illustrations. I felt it was a good story for my daughter to read as it told how the young girl, her mother and grandmother survived a fire that destroyed their home and built a life for themselves afterward. The reward to being able to buy a comfortable chair after all their hard work and savings drives home the point of how much we have and how little we may sometimes appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2007-06-08

Owning Sibs and other breeds over the years I laughed till I had tears reading about Caesar. What a great read. Not that I recommend it for the bathroom reading but that is the only place my hubby will read. I walked past the door one day and he was laughing hysterically. I just knocked on the dog and asked "Caesar?" He replied "Lived that one before!"
After having lived with so many characters over the years it is easy to see that they really are true stories. If you have a dog lover in your life this should be in their stocking.

Book arrived promptly and in the condition as advtised, actually it was better than I expected.

4 out of 5 stars Dog Stories.......2007-05-13

A good book for people of all ages who love dogs. Although, like many of Gary Paulsen's books it is geared toward teens, this is a quick read for anyone. Laughs and tears throughout!

5 out of 5 stars A Review by Bonnie.......2007-04-27

Reading this book, My Life in Dog Years was an OK book. You read all the different dogs' stories. What every dog's personality is, and what the dog does with him. Some stories are very interesting. It is an easy book to read. If you like reading about dogs, this book has all kinds of good stories.

4 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2007-03-27

My Life in Dog Years, written by Gary Paulsen was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Gary Paulsen has an extremely different way of writing from other authors. I have read a couple of his other books. This was probably not his best, but it was well written. I would highly recommend it for any dog lover.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worked!.......2007-09-19

This is one of two books that we used (along with the skittles candy each time my son went on his potty). Something worked :-). He really liked when I was reading this book to him in the bathroom.

5 out of 5 stars Great Potty Book.......2007-09-11

This is such a cute book, and it touches on some good potty training issues, like the fact that it takes some time & practice, and sometimes accidents happen. It's a little long, though; although my 2-year-olds usually hang in there, it tests their attention span at times. Overall, I think it's one of the better potty training books I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars A potty training book that actually deals with reality........2007-09-02

Unlike many potty training books, this one actually shows both a mother and a father working with a child through the entire experience of potty training: getting the potty chair, the mechanics of poo and pee, and transitioning from diapers to "big boy pants", all with the boy's parents there and helping with the mechanics as well as love and encouragement. If I had to do it over again, this would be a primary book in my potty training library.

5 out of 5 stars Son loves this book!.......2007-08-24

My son is learning about using the potty and he absolutely loves this book about "Michael" and how he learns to use the potty. He'll talk about it too and say "just like Michael." I think the book really helps him relate to the whole idea and that other kids are doing it too... "just like Michael."

4 out of 5 stars Good potty book.......2007-06-27

My 2 yr old likes this book. I appreciate that the little boy "Michael" in the book tries and tries but nothing happens (at first). The only thing I wasn't too keen on was that Michael's father taught him to urinate standing up the very next morning. I wished they could have saved this task until later in the book once Michael has mastered using the toliet.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to get siblings involved.......2007-10-14

I bought this for my 4 year old to fill out for he new baby brother. Some of the questions are hysterical and she loves filling out the information and tracing her feet and his feet. I'm sure both kids with treasure it when they're older to see what she thought of him when he was born.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect book for the younger, new big brother/sister.......2007-07-14

I bought this book for my 3 year old and it is perfect for her age level. With its large text, humorous check lists, and simple art and observational activities, it is perfect for the younger, new big brother or sister (3-6 yrs). This book allows the child to compare themselves to the baby which shows them how special they are, and how much care the baby needs.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!!!.......2007-07-09

This book is exactly what I was looking to get for my stepson. He is so excited about our new baby and this was just icing on the cake. He can't wait until the baby is born so he can start writing in his baby book just like me and Dad will in ours. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is either having another child or bringing a child into a blended family.

5 out of 5 stars Great older sibling baby gift.......2007-05-21

This is a terrific "big brother" or "big sister" gift to help the older sibling feel like they're not losing something having just had a baby. It's a really good quality book and good activity for a parent to do with the older sibling.

5 out of 5 stars great memories.......2007-05-18

This book is great for older siblings to fill out about the new baby. If they can't write yet you can also fill it out for them. Makes a great gift for the older child that might feel left out.

Book Description

Carol Gray's social stories have been used all over the world to teach social and life skills to children on the autism spectrum. Taking the form of short narratives, the stories in My Social Stories Book take children step-by-step through basic activities such as brushing your teeth, taking a bath and wearing a safety belt in the car. These stories are written for preschoolers aged 2-6 and form a useful primer for non-autistic as well as autistic children.

My Social Stories Book contains almost 200 stories, arranged in sets, and is illustrated throughout with line drawings by Sean McAndrew.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Social stories book.......2007-08-28

It is a great book to do with children that need that extra little help in how to deal with socialsituations

2 out of 5 stars Didn't live up to the Hype.......2007-06-05

I bought the book after reading heaps of info about Carol Gray and her social stories. Unfortunately the book could possibly benefit 3 year olds and young 4 year olds. Certainly children any older will not get any benefit from it. For me it was a complete waste of money and I have since donated the book to the local library.

4 out of 5 stars social stories carol grey.......2007-05-24

this book has relevant stories for the appropriate disorder and I expected it to be useful for the child in mind. However in my case it was the child who decided whether it was useful or not. He has no interest in them at all. They're boring is his comment--he's 5--and refuses to participate. what he would prefer is the 'real' book--far more colourful and exciting.Maybe some colour graphics would make them more appealing.I purchased them as they were recommended by our psychologist.
Jacinta O'Reilly

3 out of 5 stars School Use.......2006-11-10

The book itself was ok, but what I bought it for was to use it during school time and it didn't have much to use at school. What I needed was social stories I could use with my students at school situations. For home and outside of school there was some great social stories but not enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars Presicion through simplicity.......2003-06-03

As an individual unfamiliar with the nuances of AS, I found "My Social Stories Book" particularly effective in identifying, conveying and demystifying what is mundane for most people, but what can be overwhelming for those with AS. Sean McAndrew's brilliant translation of the text via child-friendly illustrations relevant to their respective scenarios are what make a publication like this one truly work. Much like crosswalk symbols, these illustrations must be absolutely simplistic in order to be unmistakeably understood. Much respect to McAndrew who rendered the abstract idea of divorce in such tender illustrative grace.
