If you practice NLP, it belongs in your library!.......2007-09-10
The book is a classical by the master itself. If you know something about inductions and hypnosys then you need this book as a reference book. No ifs, buts, then or so. You as book from a master by a master.
Formalization of Erickson's Technique.......2007-08-14
Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. Volume I is an attempt to formalize the verbal and non-verbal hypnotic techniques using transactional grammar. The sections detailing the cases of Erickson were quite useful and absorbing. The discussions of the techniques were very useful.
The sections where the techniques were formalized using transactional grammar were very heavy going and, I felt, added not very to the discussions of the techniques. The use of transactional grammar was quite interesting in that it pointed out that what not was said was as important as was said and how it was said. The transactional grammar sections were interesting in and of themselves as an extension of symbolic logic.
That said, I would recommend starting with another book if you are interested in hypnotic techniques or Dr. Erickson's techniques.
Must read.......2007-08-13
Rather cumbersome reading but, right on track. Very insightful. A must for anyone interested in mentalism/hypnotism.
So simple so effective.......2007-07-03
Amazingly simple to follow. Great investment. Really pleased I bought it. If you are into Hypno then it is a must.

There is no doubt in my mind that Erickson is one of the greatest therapists of all time. This book gives examples of his work and attempts to codify Erickson's processes. If your a linguist you will find it readable, if not it's still worth wading through the jargon for the gems.
I hope you find this review helpful.Thank you Russell Cunningham Australian Institute of Self Development

ASIN: 1583913653 |
Book Description
In this innovative and informative revision of their classic text, Havens and Walters provide a clear description of the hypnotic experience and a compelling explanation of its therapeutic potential within the clinical setting. The poetic and metaphorical communication patterns integrated into this hypnotic technique are designed to create therapeutic change efficiently and effectively while providing a healing relationship within which deeper personal meanings may be explored. Verbatim sample transcripts of various induction and therapeutic suggestion procedures offer an exhaustive range of possible applications.
This revised edition incorporates recent research and writings on the role of unconscious processes, wellness, and positive psychology along with new metaphor scripts for problems and disorders not included in the first edition. It also includes specific guidelines for creating one's own hypnotherapeutic inductions and metaphors, as well as a detailed explanation of the therapeutically efficientand effective Diagnostic Trance process.

Use it with every client.......2006-11-10
I use at least one of these scripts with every client that I have. I addition, the way the book is organized into induction scripts, direct & metaphor scripts, and a termination script, allows you to select different inductions from your own work or from another script book and still use the direct and termination scripts in this book that others do not have. I have yet to find a termination script as useful as this one.
Great "patter" revitalizer!!!.......2006-02-23
After 20 years as a hypnotherapist--to much of my induction and suggestion talk had become--automatic. This book has put new energy--new emotion into my sessions.
Expanded Edition - Much Bigger Than Original.......2004-10-27
This second edition of the book is about one third bigger than the original edition. It has all the contents the first book has, plus much more.
The book has a a variety of inductions, emerging scripts and scripts for dealing with assortment of situations a hypnotherapist may encounter in his practice. Most scripts contain metaphors which may work more effectively in one-on-one practice if they are adapted to the one's that may be more meaningful for the client.
Here's a sample script from this collection:
SWEET DREAMS SCRIPT
Tonight, perhaps tomorrow too,
your unconscious mind
can give you a dream,
a very special dream
that clarifies the problem
indicates the source perhaps,
but tells you quite clearly
how to solve that problem now.
And each night afterwards,
until you understand it,
until you decide to do it or not,
that dream can return to you
in one form or another.
And every day
as you go about your business,
your unconscious can find something,
some thought, perception, awareness,
a taste perhaps or a sensation,
or even a color,
that seems familiar
and reminds you of something,
reminds you fo what your unconscious mind
is trying to tell you,
until you fully understand
and use that understanding for you.
Book Description
"Demystification" has become an intellectual buzzword; finally, we have a book that accurately fits the definition. When most people think of "hypnosis" they imagine either a sinister, Mesmeresque figure declaring to his subject "you're getting sleepier and sleepier ... your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier, you vill go into trance," or an entertainer compelling a subject to "cluck like a chicken." In this comprehensive introduction to hypnosis based on the pioneering work of Milton H. Erickson, William O'Hanlon demystifies the concept of "trance" and "hypnosis." He goes to the heart of the subject by answering the question: "What is trance?" But be forewarned: This is no dry, formal discourse on trance induction techniques. Rather, readers are invited to share the experience of attending one of O'Hanlon's lively and popular two-day workshops on Ericksonian hypnosis. In an energetic and often humorous manner, O'Hanlon takes his audience through the basics of trance induction and explains the how, what, and why of hypnosis. Readers familiar with Erickson's work will be delighted at the author's Class of Problems/Class of Solutions approach, which deconstructs Ericksonian interventions and provides a powerful new tool in directing clients toward solution. Each individual element of trance induction is explained clearly, through the use of case examples, demonstrations, and audience participation exercises. The book's gradual approach takes readers through the hypnotic process in a step-by-step fashion, increasing their skills and confidence.
Customer Reviews:
Clear, direct, and to the point -- Erickson made easy........2002-09-13
I wish I had discovered this book sooner. Having read Rossi, Bandler, Grinder, Gilligan, etc., and struggled to get through their overyly analytical obfuscations of Erickson's methods, I was delighted with this simply written, clear, and easy to follow text. The reason I didn't buy it sooner was that I had read his other book "Taproots" and found it too abstract and disappointing. What a long way the author has come since he wrote Taproots! He presents Ericksonian ideas in a way that is delightful to read, down-to-earth, and effortless to follow. O'Hanlon is an excellent teacher, especially for those of us who are jargon-ically challenged. My only gripe is the high cost of this rather brief volume.
Fantastic Intro to Ericksonian hypnosis.......2000-01-10
This is an engaging and extremely readable introduction to Ericksonian Hypnotherapy. Profoundly less "technical manual" than the Grinder Bandler stuff, yet is certainly not dumbed down.
Written with humor and undertanding in the informal style of a seminar in a manner that anyone could learn from.
I would recommend this to anyone interested in Ericksonian Hypnosis.
Very useful: as intro textbook or handbook.......1998-11-15
Very good introduction to Ericksonian approach, useful for a beginner and helpful for an experienced practitioner.
A great intro to solution-oriented & ericksonian hypnosis.......1997-05-15
O'Hanlon's introduction to solution-oriented work and ericksonian hypnosis is top-rate, while managing to avoid excessively leaning on the purple coat-tails of Uncle Milty (Milton H. Erickson), or on anecdotes about how he was once hypnotized by Erickson himself and thus came to find the "true" path to therapeutic success.
The experienced practitioner of hypnosis or solution-oriented therapy will find it an enjoyable read for an introductory review. Those experienced in one or the other modality will find something of value in learning about the overlap between the two disciplines, and the way they can amplify each other.
For the curious reader interested in hypnosis, or the beginning student of either method, this is one of the best combinations of readable style and substance on the market
Book Description

Milton Erickson, Where are you now that I need you?.......2007-09-16
Extremely interesting portrait of Milton Erickson highlighted by many case studies that are fascinating. Very informative and enjoyable. For those of you who have an interest in psychology and are tired of reading variations of the same idea, give Dr. Erickson a shot. His methods at times are hilarious, yet effective. Entertaining, informative, enlightening. I hope he takes my insurance.
A Useful Book.......2007-08-14
Uncommon Therapy is a good survey of Dr. Milton Erickson's approach to therapy. The book consists of stories from Erickson's case files along with an explanation of the approach that Erickson took. This book is potentially useful for anyone who has problems and wishes to solve them as the techniques could be applied on a personal level. The people who should be interested in reading this book are the professionals who wish vary their and customize their approach to their patients.
My interest in the book was to find out more about Erickson and his therapeutic techniques that I could apply in my own life. It succeeded in satisfying both my aims. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
Early Roots Of Cognitive Therapy Still Relevant.......2007-06-20
Uncommon Therapy is an introduction to the therapy work of famed Medical Hypnotist Milton Erickson. It is more readable than many of Erickson's writings. Haley also adds some of his perspective to the art of therapy.
This book and others like it were written before Cognitive Behavioral Therapy became the dominant therapy in Psychology. They can still contribute insights to therapists seeking a broad background for practicing psychotherapy.
Graduate students and therapists in research settings should definitely read this book to help keep alive a more comprehensive approach to cognitive therapy than is promoted by formulaic cognitive and behavioral therapies that were largely forced on Clinicians by insurance companies pushing science-based, effective therapies; a good outcome for most consumers seeking psychotherapy in most settings.
Haley, using a family life cycle approach (e.g. courtship, weaning parents from children, the pain of old age) uses Erickson's case studies to illustrate Erickson's approach. Nowadays it comes across as proof by anecdote. Experienced therapist do however, have examples of cases that were resolved quickly when the client restructured his/her view,
Erickson's approach contibutes best by showing how a therapist can creatively propose an alternative constuction of a problem posed by the client and by inventing strategies for change. Erickson's own writings have many more detailed examples of cases.
Milton Erickson.......2007-02-05
A great reference to techniques of Milton Erickson by someone who spent a great deal of time working with him over the years.
Jay Haley is successful in showing just how amazing this man truly was and the impact he has on modern hypnosis and psychiatric techniques.
Uncommon Therapy: The Psychiatric Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. by .......2007-01-03
Hard to review a book like this, as it is a combination of biography and therapy tecnique. The author is not a Pulitzer Prize journalist but the subject is so intense and fascinating I could not put it down....if you are a therapist or in the healing arts you definately want to read this to see what one man can do, it is an inspiration as well as a text book.....lot of method given too....you can really learn from this book.

Book Description
Milton H. Erickson is known as the father of modern hypnosis as well as the source for many modern forms of family therapy and brief therapy (including the increasingly popular solution focused therapy).
This seminal book examines the major core strategies that are woven throughout Milton H. Erickson's work. Each strategic principle is broken down into several techniques that share a common function. To help bring to life these clinical strategies, this book contains numerous clinical examples from Erickson (many of these never before published) and others.
In addition, the overarching concepts have been paired with simple analogies, folk wisdom, and illustrations from other schools of psychotherapy. This framework not only helps the reader better understand the interventions and strategies employed by Erickson but more importantly points beyond the finite limits of Erickson's achievements to an ever expanding tradition of exploratory and innovative work by which he was characterized.
Because flexibility is an important hallmark of Erickson's approach to healing, it is clinical understanding rather than rigid rules that must drive the decision-making process. The idea that several different techniques can serve the same function, and the belief that every intervention should be carried out with careful intention comes directly from the teaching of Milton Erickson.
In reading Part I, Foundations of Healing and Health, the reader will be able to recognize fundamental dynamics of healing and of the clinical relationship. Part II, Clinical Strategies, provides a description of each strategy. These are introduced in a broad and simplistic manner, followed by a more elaborate and complex examination of the clinical techniques derived from a given strategy.
Erickson understood how to provide hope to those who no longer felt they could help themselves. He fostered resiliency in his patients through the strategic activation of latent abilities. He believed that all people have within them the answer to whatever challenges they face. Building on a framework of small successes, he reinforced resiliency within the individual by engaging immediate successes that reach into the future.
Milton H. Erickson will continue to be remembered for his determination, patient perseverance, humanity, and unending love of learning. From these he benefited personally while at the same time creating a broader spectrum for the field of psychotherapy and benefiting people around the world, decades after his death. This book will help others follow in his footsteps.
Customer Reviews:
What a system Short offers!.......2007-05-13
Dr. Dan Short has constructed a very cohesive system of describing Milton H. Erickson's therapeutic techniques, perhaps the best I have ever seen. Short's six therapeutic strategies of progression, partitioning, distraction, suggestion, reorientation and utilization are elegant constructs that I believe may well organize all human helping behavior.
This is a extremely well organized and easy to understand treatment of Erickson's ingenious methods and may inspire the reader interested in psychotherapy and other forms of human empowerment to consider the ways in which he or she is practicing the craft.
A non professional reader...enjoys........2007-04-03
All my qualification for reading this and reviewing this, is simply the amount of reading I've done in nearly two years now. Covering NLP, hypnosis, REBT and some other odds and ends. So professional, I am not.
The 6 strategies covered, I can see operate in a wider realm. The realm of social influence in fact. Having reread the book several times now, I can see in other therapy modalities these threads running through.
From my own limited understanding, this is certainly an addition to my library that goes way beyond techniques, cookbook formulas and "how-to's". Instead, you have a wider overarching set of concepts to inform therapy in a more flexible, responsive and creative way.
The 6 strategies (it is noted that these are *not* exhaustive, just the main ones to be discussed) are Distraction, Progression, Reframing, Suggestion, Partitioning and Utilisation. On later reflection, I realised where some of these apply to rapport building, persuasion as well as engineering social attitudes.
At the time I was reading Cialdini's Influence, and found that the two books together do give me a way to understand propoganda, advertising and sales. Yet this is certainly not the aim of the book in itself. Like any excellent work, it has wider applications than the authors discuss, or where perhaps consciously aware of at the time?
I highly recommend this to hypnotherapists and therapists of any stripe in actual fact. I also recommend it highly to any student of psychology, counselling, advertising (yes, it's way off the curriculum I'm sure) and any agent of influence.
This of course, is only my perspective as one criticism I've had is the sheer number of books I've read in only 2 years means that surely I can't have processed the skills in them properly. Quite right, but I've enjoyed trying :-).
Like Spending Time with Erickson.......2006-01-28
Hope and Resiliency. Understanding the Psychotherapeutic Strategies of Milton H. Erickson, M.D." is a wonderful book. I had the sense while reading it that I was in Erickson's office and just listening to him talk. This is a consequence of an informal narrative style wherein the book contains many case studies, comments by Erickson, and comments by his daughters and Short. I have not seen some of these studies and commentaries before, and they shed a new and continuingly interesting light on this remarkable man and his works. There are gems like, "Let patients know that they are going to be cured and that it will take place within them." And "Often in psychotherapy a change of reference is all that is needed." and "Erickson's philosophy of healing was characterized by his attention to the goodness of the patient's mind and body.
The heart of the book centers around organizing Erickson's contributions under the categories of: distraction, partitioning, progression, suggestion, reorientation, and utilization. Although it is next to impossible to characterize or systematize Erickson's work in simple packets, this organization does lend itself to an useful set of guidelines to the man and his work.
This book is highly recommended as it provides the reader with some unique perspectives on Erickson's work, his way of working, and many practical ideas.

Bringing light to the mystery.......2005-12-22
Two distinct models of psychotherapy are emerging in the 21st century: the empirically based, programmed models and the strategic, humanistic models. Hope and Resiliency will emerge as one of the texts that epitomize the emerging strategic humanistic movements.
In the Milton H. Erickson Foundation Newsletter interview with Scott Miller in the Winter 2005 issue (Vol. 24, No.3), Miller pointed out that techniques and procedures represent only a small percentage of the therapeutic impact in psychotherapy. Instead, it is the therapist's underlying rapport and conviction that makes the difference. Consistent with this strategic humanistic zeitgeist, Hope and Resiliency is more than a mere analysis of Erickson's strategies and techniques. It is a guide in understanding Erickson's perspective on what it means to be human and on what humans can become. Each chapter is a window into the complexity and miracle of what Erickson saw when he watched people interact with their environment and make conscious and unconscious decisions.
An implied assumption in Hope and Resiliency is that if a therapist's internal conviction is that the patient needs fixing, the patient views himself as being broken. If a therapist's internal conviction is that the patient needs curing, the patient views himself as being sick. If a therapist's internal conviction is that the patient already has everything inside that he needs with which to solve his own problem, the patient views himself as being a seeker.
This core section of the book presents strategies for clinical problem-solving. It builds on the core strategies using delightful case examples followed by explanations and elaborations. As one who has read everything about Erickson I can get my hands on, I was happy to discover many previously unpublished examples. As with the first part of the book, the second section is more than a set of how-to techniques. It is an exploration of the roots and branches of Erickson's philosophical tree as seen through concrete applications.
Each subsequent element is presented as though one were looking through a single multi-faceted window into the dynamic maelstrom of humanity. In this way, the authors have avoided having to choose between tactics or strategy by simultaneously presenting each element as both discrete and as an aspect of a larger whole.
I appreciate how the authors elegantly combined the easily readable philosophic elements with practical technique and strategy explanations. At the end of the book there is a summary of pragmatic guidelines that describe contraindications and caveats when applying the strategies with different populations or specific cases. Subsequently, there are concrete exercises that help the practitioner to internalize each of the six strategies.
In the introduction, the authors affirm that, "the content in these chapters is not meant to be memorized as a sort of stale doctrine but rather to serve as a spark for imagination and continued discovery." They are extremely successful in accomplishing their stated goal. It is impossible to read this book without one's mind immediately thinking of how to apply the learnings to one's own patients.
Most importantly, Hope and Resiliency helped me organize many of the learnings I previously internalized from Erickson but did not have pegs upon which to hang the concepts. This is a book I wish I had when I was just starting out. With it I would not have been as intimidated by the immense complexity of Erickson's worldview. To that end, I highly recommend Hope and Resiliency to anyone at any level who values both clarity and the joy of discovery.

Book Description
If one could ask Milton Erickson anything one wishes about how to change people, the result would be these conversations. The lively discussions are about the basic issues in the clinical field and are essential to the education of any therapist today. These conversations took place over a period of 17 years and were recorded as part of Gregory Bateson's project on communication and therapy. Bateson is involved in these conversations, which were primarily conducted by Jay Haley and John Weakland who were specializing in the study of Erickson's way of changing human beings. There are three volumes in this series. In this volume, these conversations describe Erickson's lively ways of doing therapy with children and presents his basic ideas about children and families.

A classic book!!.......2001-04-27
This series of conversations sets the stage for stratigic family therapy. Erickson is in classic form here, the wit, the insight, and the process of change are all laid out quite well here. What these series do it lay out the way Erickson worked, and the guiding principles that he used in therapy. These books were out of print for years, and it is great to see them back!!

Book Description
At last! This classic work on the experimental and clinical aspects of hypnotic time distortion is available once again. Here, Cooper and Erickson offer a truly original approach to a subject that jas intrigued physical scientists, psychologists and philosophers alike.
Time distortion, the difference between real time of an event and the perceived time of an event, and its non-therapeutic implications are discussed, investigated, and evaluated in the first half of this book by Dr. Cooper. The clinical phenomena involved, with specific reference to therapeutic implications are discussed and studied by Dr. Erickson, along with illustrative case material in the second half. Also included is a final section, "Subjective Time Condensation as Distinct from Time Expansion."
Customer Reviews:
Time Distortion - An Extremely Useful Hypnotic Phenomenon.......2003-05-01
The book explored time distortion phenomenon and provides lot of examples - some are interesting purely from investigative perspective as in being able to count in few minutes of hypnosis the number of cotton balls it would take to count in several hours of real time; others are very practical and useful as in accelerating learning or developing a skill - imagine in few hours of hypnosis you can develop an expertise it would take you years to develop in real time.
Even many new techniques from the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming such as Time-Lines provide very effective method for further exploring and enhancing effects of time distortion, this book is not only a classic, but also provides a great background in terms of research.
