But Enough About Me..........2007-09-20

Having read the compelling Newsweek article that became the catalyst for the book, I was expecting much more than what was finally produced. As another reviewer mentioned, too much of the book was spent on CDR Jadick's personal history and trite stories about everyday life downrange. (Though the latrine story was pretty doggone funny...)
Perhaps it's difficult to produce a tome about one aspect of one battle - but others have managed. Those who have, however, are usually historians and not docs.
A bad book review should be understood for what it is. A book review. This is not a criticism of the author's valor or medical skill, which is worthy of every accolade that's been bestowed.

Mediocre at best.......2007-08-16

Does not deserve to share a shelf with medical accomplishments such as Atul Gawande's Better or Complications. The book is filled with trite sentences and tainted with the robotic marine mentality. Slow and reads like you yourself are in hell.

A Jewel of a Novel.......2007-07-01

having been in the Navy I found this book a fine read. His explanation of the Marine/Navy world was perfect. Corpmen are always highly respected by all. Beyond that it shows the great men and women and their beliefs toward our wonderful country. Soemtimes when we see the faults by politicians and others and we wonder how we will make it as a country all we have to do is look toward the fine men and women that serve us and our country. Let our hearts go out and let us in the future be ready to help them in all they will need.

On Call In Hell by Cdr. Richard Jadick.......2007-06-25

The book was riveting...hard to put down. I read it in two days, mainly because I wanted to experience what Marines and Navy Corpsmen experience in combat, and I certainly did and then some. My son's heroic rescue on Thanksgiving Day, 2004 was clearly documented, as was his death in combat the next day. Kudos to the corpsmen who literally go through the gates of hell to rescue a wounded Marine!

Too much sarcasm from start to finish. It's a far-left view of the Bush administration where author Frank Rich seems to be visibly upset at any Republican administration. He uses references to Jon Stewart's, The Daily Show along with Saturday Night Live numerous times to back his opinions on current political events. In my view, an author of his age background and experience should not have written this farcical, liberal montage of jabs at the office of the President of the United States. Better luck next time Frank.

BRAVO!! Succinct yet complete, and thoroughly absorbing........2007-08-23

By his piece-by-piece dismantling of the façade that is the Bush administration, Rich offers the most plausible and perhaps definitive explanation of Bush-Cheney-Rove & Co.'s rush to war, leaving an unparalleled trail of destruction - Manhattan, New Orleans, Iraq, our constitution and civil liberties, our treasury, our international prestige, and perhaps our way of life - so massive in scope we may never recover from the hubris, deception, cynicism, incompetence, and lawlessness wrought by this gang of crooks.

Approximately since LBJ, television has had the effect of focusing then magnifying the character flaws of our presidents, until, appropriately, professional actor Reagan came along and made the camera work for him. With personal guru Rove behind the curtain directing Bush's every move, word, and decision, W. shamelessly honed this skill to big-brother perfection, until the façade could no longer outpace the complete lack of substance - character, wisdom, intellect, ability - beneath. The consequences of Bush being so exceptionally unqualified for the ultimate responsibility he so unlikely attained became too much for even the Wizard to keep up the ruse. And it all came crashing down.

Rich also pays attention to the cultural context - our infinite indulgence for infotainment, the Enron values - that allowed these charlatans to lead us not just into temptation (endless wars, tax cuts and debt that will break us) but infernal damnation.

There's a case for impeachment and conviction on nearly every page. We can sit it out and pray that W. doesn't wreak more devastation before it's all over, or we can impeach him and Cheney now. That's assuming we can evict them both without them taking us down with them. More than Nixon and all the crooks before or since, these guys belong in prison.

Kudos to Rich for a thorough chronicle of our national nightmare since September 2001. Read it and weep for our country and all we've lost.

Hubris Without Limits.......2007-07-22

There can be little doubt that George W Bush is a lightweight. I can say this from a distance as I am not an American but simply an observer of events. It is a great shame that so many people judge America by his actions. This is most unfair. America is so much more than this simpleton.

I read "The Greatest Story Ever Sold" with keen expectations of gaining some insight to the machinations of American political life. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case. This book is very superficial. Even with the benefit of hindsight where we can see events with greater clarity than when they are actually unfolding, Frank Rich sheds little light on matters. This is unfortunate. He was working with such potentially great material.

We all know what a monumental error it was for Bush to land on an aircraft carrier with a "Mission Accomplished" sign in the background. This was hubris of immense proportions. A wiser head would never have been involved in such stupidity. I'm certain earlier presidents would have at least thought twice before going ahead. But not this man. His naivety is without bounds.

Where to now? Iraq seems like a giant vortex. Civil war has been unleashed and outsiders seem to hold no sway. Perhaps it is best to just stand back and let time determine an outcome.

Overall, Frank Rich's book has value only in so far as we are reminded of Bush's mendacity. But do we really need reminding? How could we forget?

Best Yet on Iraq and Bush.......2007-07-14

I've read one book after another in my effort to understand how America has gone so wrong so fast. This is the best, right up there with Fiasco and One Percent Doctrine. I look forward to Rich's next foray of book length and hope he will attack the most important and as yet unanswered question of this era --- in the face of a cheerleading national press corps, how did the American people nevertheless reject this war and its leaders even before Katrina,etc. had disclosed their utter incompetence, stupidity, and disdain for us all.....in the answer to this question lies the future of all that is decent in our nation.....

A Soldier is Surprised When He Wakes Up One Morning.......2007-06-20

Imagine if you were one of several soldiers wounded in the Iraqi war who woke up one morning to find that there was a letter to the editor in your newspaper that supported the war and had your signature on it, but you didn't write that letter, and knew nothing about it.. The letter was written by the PR team in your federal government. Or picture this: President Bush is standing at night in the now brilliantly lit Jackson square in New Orleans talking optimistically about the city. Well at least the square seems lit up nicely so we guess the electricity is back on. The speech ends, the flood lights go off, and the square is plunged into total darkness.

This is a book detailing how the government lied and created propaganda to further their cause in both the war, and in the aftermath of Katrina. It's a fascinating book because it follows a time line that shows clearly how the public comments made by public officials changed over time. In fact there is a 78 page time line appendix in the book that details these morphing statements date by date. The book tells about the fake reporters at press conferences, the fake news columnists, and the fake "news" articles that the government distributed to gullible media. As one government person stated, "we create our own reality." When Specialist Wilson asked Rumsfeld why he and his men didn't have adequate armor Rumsfeld said it was a matter of production and capability. That was a lie that was outed quickly when it was revealed that one supplier, ArmorWorks said it could quickly increase production by 100%. During the battle in Falluja we were told that there were 3000 Iraqi soldiers fighting the battle. Reporters on the scene said that the Iraqi soldiers showed up after the fighting was over, posed in their neat, clean uniforms and departed. Certainly you remember the frequent comments about the thousands of Iraqis that have been trained or are almost completely trained. Somehow they never seem to materialize.

You've probably heard a lot of this stuff, but Mr. Rich brings out the deceit of all the Washington shapeshifters in wonderful - or perhaps the word should be horrible - detail. You see the action flow, and learn about a lot of governmental skullduggery that will make you cringe. It's spellbinding reading.

This is a fascinating story about how the medical establishment did not detect a psycopath in their midst. Even after detection, they allowed him to continue as a doctor.

Even more upsetting was the failure of the faculty of the college of medicine at Southern Illinois University to detect and fail incompetent students. These students, including Michael Swango, were allowed to continue; even after episodes of total incompetence. If these policies are common at other medical schools, it offers an explanation for the large number of substandard physicians.

Great Book.......2007-01-09

Not only was this book a great read, it also displays the significant truth about the world of medicine. This type of behavior (ignoring what's in front of you) happens everyday in medicine. All credentialing personnel should be required to read this book.

Required reading for anyone who receives medical care.......2006-11-29

I was given "Blind Eye" when I first began working at a physician monitoring program as a clinician. At the time, I was under the impression that because physicians have so much responsibility to "do no harm," they would automatically report themselves or fellow physicians if they believed they were impaired mentally, physically or emotionally. How wrong I was!

"Blind Eye" represents the epitome of how our medical system supports physicians, even when they are dangerous to themselves and others. Through a painstaking and exhaustive review of the life and career of Dr. Michael Swango, James B. Stewart illustrates how easy it was for a medical doctor to manipulate nurses, colleagues, administrators, patients, and even his own family into believing that he was a competent physician. Stewart further demonstrates how the "good old boy" system is alive and well in America, in which doctors look the other way when something seems wrong, even when evidence to the contrary is right in front of them.

If I had not read this book, knowing it is a true story, I probably would not have believed that a physician could truly get away with murder; now I am truly convinced that this is, unfortunatly, the case. "Blind Eye" should be required reading for every person who works with or sees a personal physician.

terrific read....uh, except for............2006-08-29

Stewart's coverage of the l'affaire Swango is exemplary--one of the best true crime reads in the last ten years, this one....except...except for what I've found to be a common occurrence in books of this genre, namely, in this instance, that Michael Swango, not once, not twice, but probably 20 times, is described as "handsome": what's up with that? Swango looks like a cartoon horse, and in no sense of the word "handsome" is he, well, even slightly better than subpar in the looks department. Several b/w pix here document this guy's oversized choppers, narrow head, and so on. So why is this the case? Possibly to lure name actors into vying for the lead in a filming of this, and thus make the project more attractive in order to secure a better deal? That's the only thing I can think of and, as I say, this is a common problem in the true crime genre. SO: it's a five-star read, but docked a notch because, if the author continually overstates a major fact regarding the book's main character's appearance, the reader HAS to wonder, Hey, what other liberties are taken with the truth here? Be that as it may--a tip o' the hat to Stewart for his page-turning prose. Possibly the best book I've ever read about a poisoner, including the great works covering the infamous 19th and early 20th century cases, when poison was much in vogue.

SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR...!!!!.......2006-08-21

THIS BOOK IS A GREAT POWER PACKED STORY OF HOW A SERIAL KILLER DOCTOR COULD GET AWAY WITH HIS MURDERS FOR SO LONG, AND BE COVERED UP BY THE "DOCTORS PROFESSIONAL PROTECT EACH OTHER RULES" AGAIN AND AGAIN. IT IS VERY SCARY HOW U CAN NOT EVEN TRUST A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL WHEN IN THE HOSPITAL. IT CERTAINLY WILL MAKE ME QUESTION ANYTHING I AM GIVEN OR INJECTED WITH NEXT TIME I AM IN THE HOSPITAL. A MUST READ IF U HAVE WONDERED HOW MEDICAL "ACCIDENTS" HAPPEN!!

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Slow Start But Great Ending.......2007-10-09

If you can get past the parts of the story about the pink spoonbills, or whatever those birds are called, you will see that Doctor No is one of the best novels in the Fleming series. The story starts off slow, but really picks up when Bond arrives on Crab Key. This is just full of adventure, great dialogue and Bond goes through one of his worst beatings in the last chapters of the novel. If you enjoyed the movie, then you will definitely like this 100 times more since it expands and tells more than the movie does, even going into why his name is Doctor No (which isn't his birth name). This is just a really good book that you won't be able to put down once the real action gets started, just be warned that there is a slow beginning.

The first great Bond villain.......2007-10-07

Although Dr. No is the sixth book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series, it is also a first in a few key ways. From a cinematic standpoint, Dr. No was the first James Bond book adapted into a movie (with only a crude TV version of Casino Royale preceding it). In addition, it is the first of the Bond novels to feature the villain as a title character (to be followed by Goldfinger and The Man With the Golden Gun). Most significantly, perhaps, is that Dr. No is the first novel to feature the truly megalomanical villain; only Hugo Drax, in Moonraker, comes close, and even his ambitions fit more in the category of violent than power-hungry.

As Dr. No begins, John Strangways, Britain's man in Jamaica is killed along with his female assistant. With no bodies found, it is assumed the two ran away on a lover's tryst. In England, Bond is recovering from a near-death experience (which occurred at the conclusion of From Russia With Love). M, uncertain if Bond is up to full strength, assigns him to look into the disappearance, figuring that it will be more of a vacation than a real job. Bond is insulted, but takes on the assignment.

Bond, who last met Strangways in Live and Let Die, suspects the worst, a feeling that intensifies when people start following him and attempting to kill him. The only suspect is the mysterious Dr. No, a Chinese-German who owns most of Crab Key, an island around thirty miles from Jamaica. Before Strangways died, he had been investigating claims that Dr. No was disrupting a bird sanctuary. With the assistance of the local Quarrel (also last seen in Live and Let Die), Bond decides to sneak onto Crab Key for a closer look.

Once they get to the island, they encounter the beautiful shell-seeker Honey Rider (what would a Bond book be without a beautiful woman, usually psychologically scarred and in need of meeting the right man?); Honey will accidentally alert the guards of their presence, eventually leading to capture by Dr. No. Julius No is the epitome of a Bond villain: clever, resourceful, merciless and sadistic. Dr. No wants to have his own little kingdom and he isn't about to let Bond get in his way. Of course, he will carefully describe all his plans before leaving Bond in a deadly trap.

Yes, it is a little over-the-top and has its share of traits that would eventually become cliches of the genre, but for what it intends to be - a straightforward and simple adventure story - it succeeds well. Following on the heels of what is perhaps the best Bond book - From Russia With Love - Dr. No is Fleming continuing to be at the top of his writing game.

A Great Bond Tale.......2007-08-08

Years ago when I first read Ian Fleming's Doctor No, I loved it. Having read it again recently, I think it is still one of the best Bond stories. The characters are unforgettable - Bond's trusty companion Quarrel, the beautiful Honey Rider, and the nefarious Doctor No. The tale has a great Caribbean setting and possibly the best challenge for Bond to face, i.e., the obstacle tunnel designed by Doctor No so he can test the endurance of the human species. This is a Bond story that you should certainly not miss.

An Asian supervillain, this time. At the end of From Russia, With Love, Bond had been poisoned and fighting for his life. With some first aid from a friend, M has time to call in some specialists to help save his life.

He is sent to recover in Jamaica, and look into why one of their agents, whom he met in Live and Let Die, has vanished.

He meets a blonde babe beachcomber, and also Quarrel, again. They discover Dr. No is working for the Soviets to cause problems for the US military and their missiles.

Pulp, Good Pulp.......2007-04-13

I'm not a big Bond film fan, I like the occassional one, but I thought I would give one of Fleming's novels a read.
As my first Bond Novel I found Dr. No to be a pleasant surprise. It's a bit pulpish but it suits the story.

Glatt's Book Rules.......2007-07-01

Having read both John Glatt's and Ann Rule's books, I was truthfully surprised to find that I much preferred Glatt's version.

I found it to be more brutally honest, less biased, and much more compelling a read. He also goes into much more depth in many areas than Ann Rule did.

Rule's reputation may be excellent, but I feel her earlier works such as "Small Sacrifices" and "Every Breath You Take" are in a different league than her more recent.

Give this book a shot and you might find yourself surprised. (btw- the typos were not that glaringly obvious) Can't wait to read John Glatt's next book!

Let's Compare.......2007-06-18

I recently read Ann Rule's, Too Late To Say Goodbye, and now John Glatt's book, The Doctor's Wife. John Glatt told the same story in a quicker version without all the niceties. Even though he did not have access to the Barber/Tierney or Hearn families, it did not make his book any less compelling. He did have access to Edwina, Bart Corbin's sister-in-law who told her version of events, which to my untrained eye where a bit more disturbing. The Corbin family is culpable in many ways and it is clear they can not come to grip with their responsibilities. When your son, brother, or brother-in-law is involved with two women who have died by the same means, somewhere you have to start asking yourself some very hard questions about this individual versus going on blind faith. John Glatt answered one question that Ann Rule did not. Why? (The answer is disturbing in its simplicity causing the reader to want more of an interview with Bart Corbin which neither book covered.)

In John Glatt's book you will note he didn't play favorites in the retelling of events. He gave the ugly details where Ann chose to wash over them. Although her interviews with the families are interesting, heartbreaking, and very touching, I found her writing to be biased which is not what I expect from a true crime author. I am very fond of Ann Rule books but feel her latest account of this tragedy was not her best work and would recommend John Glatt's book over Ann's.

I will agree 100% with the review comments of S. McQueen regarding the book cover. I had the very comments regarding the front and back cover so I will not bore you making repeat statements, but will lead you to her review. In short, I felt the front and back cover was very poorly done to include the many typos within. Still, all-in-all a good read but with many questions left unanswered by both authors.

BOTH HAD SOMETHING TO HIDE.......2007-05-16

I just read John Glatt's excellent new true crime book, "The Doctors Wife" and found it a fascinating story about two people leading double lives. Both Dr. Bart Corbin and his wife Jennifer had something to hide. He: a suspicious and explosive past, and she: an obsession with "EverQuest", a cyber game which lead her to a compulsive trans-gendered lesbian affair, which would her enrage her husband. In the chapter titled "The Dentist from Hell", Glatt flawlessly captures the terror that patient, Sheila Shook must have felt during her ordeal in the dentist's chair watching the tightly wrapped dentist Dr. Corbin unravel into a foul mouthed out of control maniac. The description was a cinematic experience and I highly recommend this compelling story.

Glatt brings this case to life. I've read and enjoyed some of his other books and this one is every bit as fascinating...truly a chlling story.

True crime? No, true crap.......2007-04-29

This book is a hundred pages or so eulogy to the victims, and nothing else. The facts are poorly described, poorly detailed, and there is not even a slightest bit of an explanation of the offender's behavior made by a trained psychologist. Even if I fully understand the pain the victims family have been through, that's definitely not what I expect from a good true crime book. I wish I had not bought it...

Brain Fog Unfogged -- A Feat in Communication.......2007-07-30

Osborn does what is virtually impossible. She translates the fog of a damaged brain's function into vignettes that an undamaged brain can comprehend.

In her case, this translation is from experiences which were by definition wordless, disorganized, incomprehensible, frightening and often completely mindless to their opposites. The level of Dr. Osborn's skill in doing this may be best understood by readers who have some experience (as I do) in being with brain-injured people.

Whether one appreciates Osborn's achievement in communicating the uncommunicable is unimportant. What is valuable is that she succeeds so well in giving us insight into the "being" of at a subset of the injured.

Most of the incidents recorded in the book are too long to quote in illustration of my point. Their length is a necessary consequence of Osborn's wish to reveal her floundering. Nothing in her life was straightforward. A relatively short excerpt follows:

BEGIN EXCERPT (page 33)

"I left soon after for the bookstore, but with the force of old habit and despite Marcia's written reminder dangling from the dash, I drove directly to the hospital. And then home again. Three times.

"It was noon when I drove out of the hospital parking lot for the third time, I was determined it wouldn't happen again.

"Now, as I turned onto the main road, Marcia's note clutched in my hand, I chanted, "Book store, go to the bookstore.'

"I was still saying it thirty minutes later as I turned into our driveway.

"When I got into the house, I reread Marcia's note. Lord, the bookstore.

"Well, I would definitely get the book tomorrow. Right now, I could still do the second item on her list - water the lawn."

END EXCERPT (page 34)

Needless to say, Osborn forgot to water the lawn.

The book is also notable in illustrating the lack of insight (in regard to her limitations) that Osborn (as others) experienced for quite some time. Then, once insight was gained, she writes about her struggle with a sorrowed sense of lost self.

One incident that helped to her to understand the scope of her lost abilities (which apparently were exceptional) is recorded on pages 205-206. She was not able perform even so "simple" a cognitive exercise as making a telephone call to obtain a patient's medical information.

The book provides a generalized understanding of how rehabilitation is accomplished. This includes learning stratagems for partially replacing lost structural functions.

"Now my notes ordered me to [begin italics] really look in the mirror. Hair combed? Teeth cleaned? Collar straight? Earrings match? Expression alert, smiling? [end italics] It began to make a difference."

For the most part, the rehab portions of the book are most useful for providing a patient's view of rehabilitation. "Over My Head" certainly does not provide an overview of rehabilitation techniques. Osborn does, however, include a concise review of the generalized deficits that rehab and therapy have to address.

By the end of the book, Osborn manages to return to teaching medicine, but in a format and in situations where she can proceed more or less by rote and under controlled circumstances. Osborn emphasizes that adult brain injury generally imposes permanent limitations upon post-trauma performance. You will not be who you were. Part of the rehabilitation process requires coming to emotional grips with whom you have become.

I recommend "Over My Head" without reservation. It will be of most value to people new to dealing with brain trauma. It also has worth for those of us who lost figurative pieces of ourselves, but do not have brain trauma to blame. The "coping with loss and less" element of the book has universal appeal.

Throughout, Osborn shines as a human being.

polished and effective.......2007-06-28

The personal stories provide insight, compassion and humor but are over-polished in editing as if being prepared for a TV movie script. This loses a sense of real human connection with the author and her true feelings. I found myself saying "too cute" to some examples. Certainly effective in communication, but nothing in this is a "real life" documentation in the form that American audiences have come to expect in contemporary autobiographies. Still, this is the best publication on the topic of mild traumatic brain injury that conveys the day-to-day effect of even the mildest cases.

Dr. Osborn is a true teacher.......2007-06-08

I think I now can be a better friend and cousin to Jack who recently suffered a brain injury. Reading these memoirs has jolted me out of denial. I am very grateful for the wisdom in this book.

a lifering of a book.......2007-05-27

This is the definitive tell-all about head trauma.

It savages every concept of so-called professionalism
in the neuro rehab "biz." And yes, let's never forget
it is a business...Like the movie The Doctor, with William
Hurt, the expert doctor's ego is the last to fall. Ms.
Osborn admits this readily, to her credit.

Claudia found out just how much caregivers and
"pros" alike sugar coat the truth with lies, supposedly
to spare our feelings, but really because they are
unable to feel and empathize emotionally with some-
thing as unbelievably tragic as the very Loss of Self.

Or at least the appearance of it!

Don't ever believe you will lose your self if you have
a head injury, mild or severe. It is only an illusion.
There is a broad, overarching hint throughout this book
that faith in the Almighty will bring you through head
injury successfully. I suggest you dare to believe it.

TBI treatment is still scandalously poor out there, folks!
Only the truth can fix it. Don't discount the power of
nootropic smart supplements, homeopathic remedies,
hyperbaric oxygen and just eating fresh herbs and
veggies out of a home garden even years after the injury.
Starting up painting or playing an instrument can open
dormant circuits especially if they were never used
to begin with, pre-trauma. Gee, now THERE's a thought,
hunh?! The human body has a phenomenal capacity to
heal itself with just a little push start.

This book is crammed full of insights about how even
though we can become victims in a flash we can also
begin to bust out of it as we get our bearings. Please,
please read books like this to your relatives in a coma
or even if NOT mute, aphasic, or with "locked in
syndrome." It will allow them to process the emotions.
They need you to do that for them!

It starts with the Will, as the author clearly demonstrates
by literally writing her way back to life.

Completely accurate account on living with short-term memory loss.......2006-03-20

Ms. Osborn is a godsend to have created this book. I am a survivor of an illness which greatly affected my short-term memory, and although it is difficult for me to remember the details of the book overall, I could 100% relate to each and every sentence as I read it. If you are friend or family to one with short-term memory loss, or if you simply wish to understand life with virtually no short-term memory, read this book. You will have a completely different outlook on life once you do.

My Name is Deyaneira and I am 8 years old. My English teacher read this book to us in class and I thought this book was funny . My favorite part was when Dr. De Soto climbed in the fox's mouth. I recommend this book for everybody. I also like this book by Mo Willems: Edwina the Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct. I hope you will love this book.

This is a wonderful book! I purchased this for my 4 year old son and have given several copies as gifts to his friends. The story appeals to boys and girls. The author of this book wrote the original Shrek story as well as another book titled Boris and Amos. I highly recommend this book!

Doctor DeSoto book.......2006-03-27

You can call me StoryMaker. "Doctor DeSoto" is not my favorite book, and I especially don't like the end. I like how they are animal people, but are the size they are supposed to be. What I mean is, they are animals that talk, walk on 2 legs, and live in their own house, but unlike most people animals, they are the size they are in real life. It would probably be a book a young child would adore (probably most children ages 3-5) but I don't fall into the "Dr. DeSoto lovers" category or the "children ages 3-5" category. This book is where a mouse named Dr. DeSoto (a dentist) finds out a fox is seeking dental care. Dr. DeSoto never let an animal that might eat him come in before (that's where them being the size they are in real life is important), but the fox really wants that dental care so Dr. DeSoto's wife lets him in. The part I hate the most is the end when Dr. DeSoto gives the fox his so-called special treatment so he won't eat them. That so-called special treatment causes the fox to not be able to eat anything, even if it isn't a DeSoto family member at all. He could DIE if it dosen't ware off! I actually don't have a lot of complaints, but this book is not very exciting. Overall, perhaps you may like it, but if you like foxes, this book will not please you. Signed, StoryMaker. Little Critter Braves a Hospital Trip.......2005-12-19

It's 2005 and the "Little Critter" series is still going strong. This very new release (as of the writing of this review), part of the "New Adventures of Mercer Mayer's Little Critter" series is written and illustrated by Mercer Mayer and deals with Little Critter taking a trip to the hospital following a sports injury.

Little Critter is playing soccer. He scores the tie-breaking, winning goal, but hurts his leg. The call comes out for an ambulance and Little Critter is taken to the hospital.

This is a great book that will show kids what a trip to the hospital is like and that it really isn't something to be too afraid of. The characters are anthropomrphic, but fairly representative of real-life. The illustrations are, as usual, detailed, with plenty of things to read and observe at the hospital that Little Critter visits.

This "Little Critter" book comes with five adhesive bandages, a sure hit with Little Critter's littlest fans.

Confessions from one who never cared for Dr. Who........2007-02-16

I confess that I never cared for Dr. Who during its first twenty five years that ended fifteen years ago. It was only shown in segements on PBS in this area and frankly being a hard line Star Trek and science fiction fan there was nothing that appealed to me.

I once asked Englsih friends about this and they excused the show by saying "When Dr. Who began we didn't have Star Trek, Twilight Zone and all your great shows. It was all we had." I know there were big Dr. Who fans even then, in this country, and had students who dressed up as "The Doctor" at science fiction conventions.

Then a few months ago BBC-America began showing the first of the two new seasons and the Sci Fi Channel showed some from the second season. My wife, grandkids and I were blown away and I have since bought the DVDs from the two new years and eagerly await the third. I have even bought some of the new novelizations for the kids and myself as well as toys from England. A friend over there also secured for me an authentic Billie Piper autographed picture.

That brings us to this very excellent book, Dr. Who: The Inside Story. It is very well crafted with the story about how the show came about and has beautiful pictures. It also covers the first two seasons with details on each episode. The latter is so well done you will have to see the shows even if for the third time (as it will be in our case). The book has everything a fan would want and more.

I must mention that as a Christian and a teacher there is so much I can use from the DVDs and this book to teach some great lessons. That may not have been the purpose of those who put the show together, however as C.S. Lewis has advocated, writers do not have complete control over their art and God can find a way of using even the most offbeat material. C.S. Lewis himself wrote science fiction and fantasy and not just books on theology. J. R. R. Tolkein also was a theologian, but is best known for his Lord of the Rings series. Yes, there is a lot or religious significance in Dr. Who whether intended or not.

I highly recommend this book for all whether they have seen the show or not.

An enjoyable read, detailing the return of the legendary Doctor Who series to the small screen after a 15 year absence. Filled with behind the scenes info, pictures and artwork drawings, this is a good read for any Who fan.
