5 out of 5 stars Simple yet Effective........2007-10-06

This is a book that should be read after or at the same time as reading The Guitar Fretboard workbook. This book expounds on scales and intervals, triads and arpeggios, but in theory. Helps with learning how to write staff, read staff, sightread, and play! A MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-09-30

An easy to understand guide in music theory as it relates to the guitar. I'm no wiz-bang when it comes to music. I constantly struggle with it, but despite that I recieve so much gratification from the effort. This book lays out the concepts in very easy and digestible chunks so that even a slow music learner as myself is able to grasp the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, intuitive guide for the guitarist wanting to understand theory..........2007-09-22

I have been a musician all of my life, since the age of 4, and a guitarist for a decade, since the age of sixteen. I was in high school orchestra and took guitar lessons for a few years, but at no time during any of this did any of my instructors really help me understand music theory. I tried learning a few times by myself, but that always ended in frustration.

Then I found this book. "Music Theory for Guitarists" is the most in-depth, intuitive, and well thought out book on the subject that I have ever come across. After reading this book and completing the exercises in it, I now feel confident in my grasp of music theory in a way I thought would never happen.

This book deftly guides the reader through the journey from the most basic of basics to much more complex topics, such as chord substitution and reharmonization. It also includes an entire chapter on learning to find the key center of songs, which is an incredibly useful skill to have. You can't always tell by ear what key you are in.

Perhaps the most in depth part of this book...the author analyzes the major and minor scales, and all of their modes, in depth. He gives each scale and mode its own section, discussing the nuances of what sets each apart from the others, and giving ideas for how and when to apply it in real world situations. He also goes into detail about building and identifying chords and harmonizing the major and minor scales (a section that has completely reinvented the way I look at writing music.)

I cannot say enough about this book. It has opened my eyes to a subject I thought I was too "stupid" to grasp, and showed me that I was only unable to learn because it had never been presented to me correctly. If you have any weaknesses in your knowledge of music theory, I would strongly recommend that you take advantage of the goldmine of information found in this book. You will likely find yourself, as I have, seeing the language of music in a completely different light, and for the first time really seeing how all Western music is connected at the root.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-09-17

Although some of the concepts can be a little tough at first, this book has become invaluable to me. It has enabled me to progress as a professional guitarist, not just someone who seeks to "self-learn" things on their own by playing songs of favorite bands.

I am very glad I got this book. It will teach you everything you need to know about music theory- which will greatly improve your guitar playing abilities in the long run.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-08-29

Ive reviewed alot of material on theory, and I really gained alot from this book. I dont have a guitar teacher, however, I do have a music theory instructor that I meet with weekly, and now that Ive completed a workbook in theory, and now reviewing with Music theory for guitarists, I feel that I am covering things as both review and newly applied to the guitar. There are great tips to understanding the guitar as well, which make me create my own music, and not just learn songs. Songs seem great for the once a year campfire, where everyone can sing along, but I play everyday, and without an audience. Sooner or later, youre going to discover that youre bored with other peoples songs, and youre ready to create your own music, of which this book gives you the keys to understanding this and take off on your own. Before this book, I was very frustrated with the fret board, now its user friendly in all positions.

Book Description

The “top journalist in America and the funniest” (Randi Rhodes, Air America), takes his previous New York Times bestseller a step further with hot undercover dispatches— hanging out the dirty underpants of the “armed and dangerous clowns that rule us.”

A White House spokesman said, “We hate that sonovabitch.” They're not alone: From corporate suites to Osama's cave, they fear what Britain's Guardian calls “investigations up there with Woodward and Bernstein—and a lot funnier.” But Greg Palast's fanatic following (nearly two million readers of his Web column) has made him “a cult fave among progressives” (Village Voice) who can't wait for his next release.

Palast's old-style gum-shoe detective work to dig out the info on the War on Terror, greed- dripping schemes to seize little nations with lots of oil, the hidden program to steal the 2008 election, and the media biases that keep it unreported are the meat and bones of this BBC television reporter's new book. Armed Madhouse is illustrated with dozens of documents marked “secret” and “confidential” that have walked out of file cabinets and fallen into Palast's hands.

You won't find Palast in The New York Times (except its bestseller list), but you will read his reports on the hottest Web sites worldwide, hear him regularly on Air America and the Pacifica radio networks, and see his stories reappearing as the basis for Eminem's hit video “Mosh,” Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, and sampled by a dozen of today's top platinum rock artists. a must read for every american and anyone who knows one or ever wants to! ha. ha.

3 out of 5 stars Read the book, avoid the audio version.......2007-10-10

The material presented seems to be meticulously researched, and clearly and systematically presented. The problem is -on the audio CD edition- the sarcasm with which the lines are spoken. The sneering, cloying sarcasm is so intense, so pervasive, and so grating that it detracts from the narrative. Is it really necessary to emulate Anne Coulter's style?

5 out of 5 stars The truth exponentially!.......2007-10-05

Greg Palast is the modern day Thomas Paine. Believe me when I say that that is not overstatement. This is the book that got a man tazed by his vociferous opining over one single chapter - in fact, the very chapter that is what makes this book so important to understanding the hijacking of an entire country and its Constitution by the Bush crime machine.

The very fact that Palast has to go to another country to speak his truth tells you that we are in serious danger of losing the fourth estate altogether if we don't pay attention and do something about it.

I heard Palast on progressive radio and started my quest for the facts by reading his online pieces, and then buying this book. I only wish more Americans had listened much earlier and perhaps we could have avoided the fiasco that began with the hanging chad fiasco of 2001 when the Supreme Court appointed King George. That horrific event began the decent into constitutional chaos and the monumental abyss of lies, torture, rendering, the attack on human rights in our country and more.

I am so glad there is a Greg Palast. Just as glad as Bush cronies hate everything this man represents. "Armed Madhouse" is a welcome addition to my reference library and historic archives. Read and become enlightened!

4 out of 5 stars Hostile Takeover.......2007-10-04

Greg Palast's Armed Madhouse documents the thesis of CW Mills' seminal 1956 book The Power Elite - that US politics is just a facade: A facade for a hostile corporate takeover of both governments and nations. Palast asserts and documents that the "war on terror" was conceived as an attempt to destroy OPEC, further impoverish the US middle class, and reap windfall corporate profits from rebuilding Iraq, whose "no-bid", cash cow rebuilding Palast calls "the biggest reconstruction project since the pyramids" [page 277]. Palast humorously remarks in passing that "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was originally dubbed Operation Iraqi Liberation ("O.I.L.") by White House spokesman Ari Fleischer.

"Conspiracy nuts think George Bush, from the moment he took office, had a secret plan to control Iraq's oil. They're wrong. Bush had two plans. Here they are: One crafted by the neoconservatives at the Pentagon, another fashioned by the State Department and Big Oil. This is the history of the secret cold war between these two power elites, which drives the hot war on the Tigris" [page 51].

"[This book] is about how they are taking these American rights away, stripping them off you one by one, from the Wage and Hour Law's 40-hour week to the Clayton Antitrust Law to the False Claims Act to the laws that keep your lights on and your pensions protected. Many are laws that you've probably never heard of, like the Public Utility Holding Company Act. But, take my word for it, you'll miss them when they're gone" [page 284].

Outstanding book.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Informative, Disturbingly Insightful.......2007-10-01

Palast uncovers advanced economic plots to make the rich richer and the poor their servants. First he discusses the oil economy as it relates to big businesses and the political systems of those countries in power. Although there are those who completely dispel Palast's notion that oil is in seemingly infinite supply (and I don't mean right-wingers, either... do a google), I don't think if Palast is wrong on this count that it destroys his theories on how the oil industry operates and prospers. Other keep-the-rich rich schemes include the stealing of elections, something I've already studied and yet, was completely horrified to learn further extent to this phenomenon. Other notable topics include China, our lack-luster education system, and how the working class is held down. Well worth the listen, but have your brain turned on and focused. You can't be day dreaming and get what the author is saying because there are a lot of details given and he talks rather quickly.

2 out of 5 stars a single man reviews this book.......2006-07-31

Awful. Some of it has some OK advice, but much of it is absurdly out of date and out of touch with the reality of being single in 2006.

Particularly egregious is the statement that a woman shouldn't sleep with a man she's dating until 3 months goes by, or 12 dates of once a week. Ladies: if your goal is to extremely piss off, confuse, and frustrate a man who you like, by all means follow this advice straight from 1940. Similarly, if you would really like to let your guy know you're a gold-digging flake, be sure to follow her 2nd date advice of picking the best restaurant in town and sticking him with a several hundred dollar bill.

It was no surprise to find out that not only is the author in her 40s, but "BBW".

5 out of 5 stars a helpful tool in dating.......2006-03-21

I found this book helpful in identifying what I was doing wrong as a woman, and in defining concretely how men think. I have read other dating books and it just seemed like the same repeated jargon or it was generally one sided, but never defined how to make both sides see eye to eye, or gain better understanding. This book cleared up alot of questions for me. Thus all things made perfectly good sense after evaluating where past experiences went wrong. Yes its a book of advice, but then again all self help books are. I will say that this was an easy read, and i didnt feel like i was reading a college literature book, and it didnt bore me. I recommend all women look into this one.

5 out of 5 stars No holds barred and tells it like it is.......2005-11-11

I wish I could give a copy of this book out to every woman friend past who has ever ruined their lives because of their boyfriends, or those who they thought were their boyfriends. If they actually follow it is another story, but this book is a full frontal attack mixed with humor and insight into others as well as ourselves.

I like the message she is pushing underneith it all, that women can be powerful. She encourages women to go for their MBAs and higher education, you don't have to settle to be a second class citizen. Don't ever let loneliness be your motivation to get involved with bad people on any level. To me many things go without saying, but it's important to tell gals who might be either a little neive or too desperate for attention and wanting to be liked otherwise. I don't know how many gals I've known who have ruined themselves financially, been abused (mentally, physically, or even sexually), have given up everything and moved to other cities or even cross country for some loser who could care less about them. We entertain ourselves as children with fairy tales about a handsome prince who comes riding in on a white horse to take us away to a fantasy world, and what do we do? We pick trolls who we have to mother and wait on hand and foot! They like to chip away at our self esteem because it makes them feel good about themselves. This is a how to for the woman who knows it's more than just looks and body, it's about self worth.

Some have accused this book of being too over the top or too frank about sex at different points. People, there are gals out there who have not watched enough cable TV and more that are the coldest of cold fish out there. You never know what goes on behind closed doors, and more often than not there is NOTHING going on behind those doors! So read books like this and give yourself some idea. Every little bit helps.

4 out of 5 stars Very good advice.......2005-10-23

Moore gives practical advice and helps women empower themselves. Women tend to invest too much of themselves too early. This is a good book for any woman who is tired of having her hopes dashed.

Americans are afraid of many things that shouldn't frighten them, writes Barry Glassner in this book devoted to exploding conventional wisdom. Thanks to opportunistic politicians, single-minded advocacy groups, and unscrupulous TV "newsmagazines," people must unlearn their many misperceptions about the world around them. The youth homicide rate, for instance, has dropped by as much as 30 percent in recent years, says Glassner--and up to three times as many people are struck dead by lightening than die by violence in schools. "False and overdrawn fears only cause hardship," he writes. In fact, one study shows that daughters of women with breast cancer are actually less likely to conduct self-examinations--probably because the campaign to increase awareness of the ailment also inadvertently heightens fears.

Although some sections are stronger than others, The Culture of Fear's examination of many nonproblems--such as "road rage," "Internet addiction," and airline safety--is very good. Glassner also has a sharp eye for what causes unnecessary goose bumps: "The use of poignant anecdotes in place of scientific evidence, the christening of isolated incidents as trends, depictions of entire categories of people as innately dangerous," and unknown scholars who masquerade as "experts." Although Glassner rejects the notion that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, he certainly shows we have much less to fear than we think. And isn't that sort of scary? --John J. Miller

Book Description

In late 2002, Barry Glassner appeared in Michael Moore's Academy Award-winning movie, Bowling for Columbine, to discuss The Culture of Fear. The reaction to Glassner's appearance, and the message of his book, were overwhelming.

As Glassner describes, the American public remains fascinated by the specter of fear in their lives. Be it the proverbial dark-faced bogeyman, or a more recent epidemic of child snatchings, Americans allow their lives to be affected by a perceived and recurrent onslaught of tragedy, death, and fear.

A national bestseller, The Culture of Fear explains why Americans are afraid, exposing the people and organizations that manipulate our perceptions and profit off our anxieties: politicians who attempt to win elections by heightening concerns about drug use and crime; advocacy groups that raise money by exaggerating the prevalence of particular diseases; and finally and perhaps most perniciously, the media that peddle new scares each week in desperate attempts to garner ratings.

Written in a vivid, entertaining style, The Culture of Fear does more than debunk prevalent myths of impending doom, it also asks us to reconsider our participation in the national charade of fear and suspicion which, according to Glassner, is eroding the trust necessary to truly ensure safety in the public square.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lacks Credibility and Debth.......2007-08-20

I initially had high hopes for this book but instead was completely disgusted. The author meticulously points out every flaw with the right wing or media studies. However, he disproves them using other studies that fit his theories but never offers any reason why his example studies are valid. Why, if the other studies were incorrect and poorly executed, should we believe that the studies he cites are any different? What makes them credible? It seems as if they are offered as correct and credible simply because they fit his liberal agenda. As someone who equally criticizes both liberals and conservatives, I need more explanation in order to believe his words. By not taking the extra time to explain, he loses all sense of credibility.

Furthermore, Mr. Glassner dissects every issue in his book, offering underlying explanations and motives to the fears. However, a gross lack of depth is shown when he says something such as "[i]t's the guns, stupid." What a shallow argument. He never offers any reasonable statement as to *why* it's the guns. He doesn't explore the reasons behind why people shoot others. He doesn't examine the motives, the societal influences or any other of the number of causes of gun violence. Instead, he blames it all on the guns, as if they simply shoot on their own. His focus on this issue has absolutely no depth of research or explanation and shows his greatest weakness: putting an agenda ahead of real study and examination. Instead of looking at the *reasons* why people commit violence and murder, such as mental instability, extreme religious beliefs, gangs, or whatever else, the author chalks it all up to the shallow argument that a tool, just a single tool, is responsible for all the ills of society. Obviously, as tragedies such as the Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11 have shown, guns are not the sole reason for evil, though by reading Glassner's work, you would never know that.

I expected much more from a respected sociologist. This book was possibly the worst I've read in years. It seems as if Mr. Glasner never learned the art of persuasive argument writing. You can only persuade one if your own information is credible and valid. His isn't.

Don't bother reading this book. I deeply regret buying it.

2 out of 5 stars Listless re-telling of what we already know... it's like a lecture in modern society with an edge towards fear.......2007-07-18

Being called "The Culture of Fear", it's only inevitable that subjects discussed could be disturbing, controversial, shocking, and sometimes depressing or terrifying.

Unfortunately, Barry Glassner, brilliant as he may be, just doesn't seem into the subject he has obviously put a lot of research into. It proudly delves into the depths of why Americans are afraid of the wrong things, and then goes about like a college professor lecturing to an apathetic class in the last years of his career with a big pension on the horizon.

He explains subjects methodically, then casually slips to the alter side of it, in such a way it sounds as if he were saying in a falsely lively tone, "Murders have gone down n%, HOWEVER murder coverage has gone up nnn%! Isn't that something?" or "Racism is a problem, as this 'n' report states, although the reverse is also true that n% of hate crimes has been about race as opposed to..."

It becomes lifeless, and loses its feel of a nonfiction work of research and more like hundreds of pages of statistics and numbers taped together and strung together with words so as to make it coherent. In all, it becomes a dull expose' which really, all in all, doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know.

2 out of 5 stars Falls victim himself.......2007-06-29

Glasser starts off with an interesting enough premise in the vein of Freakonomics. He makes the valid enough (in my opinion) point that there are those who would like us to fear (pick your issue) for various reasons. These can be to distract people from other issues, to curry power and favor, etc.

Unfortunately he then goes on to engage in the very tactics he decries in others.

For example: he starts by (accurately) stating how overblown the issue of child on child vioence has become, and quotes a criminologist (Vincent Schiraldi)'s statement that a child killing another at school is an "anomolous" event.

A few pages later he uses the same event to rail against gun ownership in the U.S.

I find it difficult to see how the same event can be used in one case to show how something is not worth worrying about and then in the same breath that it is an example of rampant gun problems and we should take immediate action.

He continues like this (engages in disparaging people for creating the "PC" label to diminish views they don't like -- but then disparages "conservative" views (which he thinks he has a handle on).

He is clearly a victim of his own preconceived ideas about what is a problem and what is not.

Too bad -- it could have been a good book.

1 out of 5 stars a primer of poor social science.......2007-05-15

All right, kids, it's time to learn specious reasoning and poor quantitative methods! You can find them both in Barry Glassner's SCARY expose:

Technique #1: Prove by speculation. As Glassner "shows" us how the Missing Children campaigns prey on our fears, he speculates on our feelings about the ads: "The photo of the missing child immediately elicits feelings of guilt, fear, and fascination." Really?

Technique #2: Prove by sketchy example. As we learn how fears about teenage pregnancies are overblown, Glassner gives the single example of two Kentucky teen mothers who had great GPAs but were denied membership in the National Honor Society. One counter-example, alas, does not a trend destroy. [My bad, Glassner also gives an example from the Ricki Lake Show. VERY convincing.]

Technique #3: Repeatedly use phrases like "studies show" and "researchers document" because if studies show it, it MUST be true! This is where Glassner departs sharply from such skilled writers as Malcolm Gladwell (The Tipping Point, Blink) or Steve Levitt and Stephen Dubner (Freakonomics). Whether or not you agree with their theses, they provide detailed descriptions of research in layperson's terms so that you can evaluate it yourself. Glassner expects you to merely believe it's true since some study showed it.

Technique #4: Accuse other studies of abusing statistics, then wait a few pages so readers forget and do the same thing yourself. On p70, Glassner writes, "If instead of percentages reporters concentrated either on the actual numbers of such crimes...they wouldn't have much of a story." Good point! Agreed! And on p73, we read, "studies find that young people incarcerated with adults are five times more likely to be sexually assaulted...than youth in juvenile facilities." Yes, but what are the numbers? We don't know!

When Glassner ISN'T trying to prove things with his super-special techniques, he actually makes a few good points. The media DO seem to blow many of these issues out of proportion (although early on he claims it isn't all the media's fault, the book makes it seem like MOSTLY the media's fault), and that has sometimes led to wildly inefficient policies or the rejection of scientific findings (without any convincing alternative findings). Glassner offers some interesting cultural hypotheses (for example, we focus on crack rather than powder cocaine because it lets us blame poor people for being poor). The book has some great anecdotes. Just don't expect to be convinced of anything you don't already believe.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-17

This book is a must-read for anyone who reads the newspaper, watches the news, or listens to the radio. It's also helpful if you are prone to modern-day anxiety attacks. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-20

Far more detailed than the How to Draw Cartoons book by this author. There are examples of heads, eyes, noses, mouth, hands, and many other elements in good detail.

5 out of 5 stars high quality.......2006-11-10

This a useful book for the artist (or developing artist) moving into cartoon drawing. The material is high quality, drawn and written by a professional with many years' work under his belt. You'll wish it were longer.

5 out of 5 stars Drawing on Inspiration.......2006-06-01

I bought this book so I can learn to draw cartoons with my 2.5-year-old daughter. Right around this time I had finished reading the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, and I was wondering how I might be able to start teaching my child about different emotions. Then on pages 18 and 19 of Hart's book I found a list of cartoon faces depicting emotions. We started drawing some of them. Currently we're concentrating on two: Happy and Laughing.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Hart Does It Again!.......2004-02-27

Without a doubt, Christopher Hart is one of the most prolific and talented cartoonist around. Having worked with companies such as Disney, his cartoon style is entertaining and stylic as well. It's got personality and it will make you want to engross yourself in the book. If you've not read any book by Chris Hart, this is one of his best. However, it is a wonderful book with lots of helpful ideas on becoming a cartoonist yourself.

It covers everything from how to place the features to costumes to animals. It would definitely be a useful starting (and ending) ground for anyone interested in this art.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent find!.......2003-08-23

This book is great! There are a ton of helpful tips and techniques that range from how to draw facial expressions and body types to how to draw ice cubes and water... and even how to convey wind or rain. The author, Christopher Hart, even explains why cartoon characters have only three fingers.

This book is very clear, very informative and very funny! I highly recommend this book!

If you’ve ever tried to tell your six-year-old how babies are made or your fourteen-year-old how condoms work, you know that grappling with telling your kids about sex can be a sweat-drenched exercise. But it doesn’t have to be. Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid They’d Ask) is a one-of-a-kind survival guide that will help you stay sane through every stage of your child’s sexual development. This indispensable guide covers all the bases, including:

• What to expect at each stage of your child’s development and how you can influence it from birth onward
• What to tell your kids at every age about sex and how to get the conversation going
• What to do when your five-year-old turns up naked with the girl next door, your toddler is rubbing on her teddy bear, or your six-year-old walks in on you having sex
• How to avoid unnecessary clashes with your middle-schooler while managing privacy, crushes, and what to wear
• How to encourage your teenager to use contraception without encouraging her to have sex, and how to help her choose the method that’s best for her

4 out of 5 stars Not for those who like to cut to the chase.......2007-08-17

While a good, solid resource by two learned academics, I was a bit disappointed w/ this read, which seemed to spend more time trying to be witty than actually getting to the "meat" of the info. Not meant for parents with "conservative" family values, this book is jam-packed w/ stories, some which seem exaggerated, in its attempt to be edgy (which to some may be read as crass). The authors clip over developmental changes of boys and girls at almost too fast a pace, making the work not as thoughtful as it could be. It also overly generalizes children's responses and behaviors. Overall, it's difficult for readers to pull out important info.

5 out of 5 stars Wildly entertaining for a "how to" book!.......2007-08-03

Half way through the first chapter, I was nodding, laughing and remembering. The author and editors are dead-on with their descriptions and stories. Their advice is absolutely bar none.

I put down the book after the first chapter and realized that it was so well written that I would have read it if it WASN'T recommended by the therapist who sees my two step-children who are currently in heat. I reported back to him with rave reviews.

A must read for anyone who has, or wants, kids. Period. It will make your life so much easier...

5 out of 5 stars not exhaustive, but very close.......2007-03-20

This book is lengthy and full of useful information, ranging from how to deal with your child's sexuality from baby to teen; masturbation; attraction; orientation; pregnancy; parenting; and everything in between. A very well written book.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy!.......2007-02-01

I read the book and wish I had read it sooner and then I gave it to my 15 year old to read as well.

Much better than A chicken's guide to talking turkey with your kids about sex (preachy at best, as in religious zealots).

I think books are a useful tool to open up lines of communication and purchased this author's book, Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids to Know About Sex with a copy of Dr. Ruth's Sex for Dummies for my older teen. I also read and shared, Human Sexuality by Roger R. Hock.

It is my personal feeling that providing your child with information about thier bodies will help them keep themselves healthy. It does not mean we give them our blessings to do whatever they want nor does it mean we have the right to make choices for them. We do as parents have the responsibilities of educating them.

As I have multiple children and liked her reasonable approach I also purchased Dr. Ruth Talks To Kids for my pre-teen. I also recommend the American Medical Association (Boy's/Girls) Guide To Becomming A Teen, and a copy of It's Perfectly Normal.

Copies of It's So Amazing and It's Not The Stork are also worth having kicking around the house but I did find the books to be rather long so don't be surprised if your active younger child does't want to go over them in one sitting.

Sexual development does begin in utero and it is time the average parent understood it better. That "talk" isn't just one talk you have with your child but a series of conversations in the car, at the supper table, when you are getting dressed in the changing room, changing diapers, in front of your best friend, at the doctor's office, and so on. If you are feeling a little shy about it- this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-11-10

What a wonderful book for mother's like me who are freaking out when our 6 year olds start asking about sex. It helps make the topic easy. Nice book.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-08-08

After reading the other reviews of this book I was really looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately, I found the book rather superficial and without much meaningful content. Some of the really important ideas, such as being able to welcome difficulties in life, the author just skims over. After reading the book, I felt that I was actual more in tune than the author herself without dedicating years on reflection and buddhist practice.

I don't think this book could change anyone life's although it may get someone interested in learning more about meditation and mental reflection.

5 out of 5 stars Appealing, honest, brave.......2007-07-30

This is an excellent book on Buddhism that weaves Susan's own stories and challenges into the fabric of a meditation practice.
I found it accessible, straightforward, and compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to Buddhism.......2007-07-13

Susan Piver's book is a wonderful introduction to Buddhism for the beginner. She explains the basic meditations of Buddhist practice with a fresh, light approach. Many Buddhist meditation texts are bogged down in background, and she skips the unnecessary details to cut to the chase. She is able to use references to the everyday situations most people encounter, and apply principles in the book.
This is my "go-to" book for my practice and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Coming in to yourself.......2007-04-28

When I read the title of this book I was a little taken aback--Afraid of my own life? Could I be? But Piver addresses issues and fears that are common themes in life--fears that are part of the human experience--and shows us in a methodically, and linear way, how to acknowledge and then diffuse those fears, by facing them head on. She disects some basic ideas in a very clear, direct, friendly and accessible way. It is as though Ms. Piver is sitting down to a cup of tea with you, to be that friend that listens and affirms all the crappy stuff that can happen to us, but then goes on to show us that by using the ancient practice of meditiation, ultimately, we can be ok with it. Or perhaps more accurately, it can be ok with us.

The meditation instructions are clear, specific and very accessible--and the 7 day meditation program looks like a great way take a committed practice of meditation to the next level. I'll say, it has inspired ME to get my butt to the cushion more, since reading the book.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Only personal accounts, no research........2007-10-15

I have heard it all before. This writer only judges people by the color of their skin. She seems to take pleasure pointing out how wrong white people are about everything. Most of the book is based on her personal experiences, so she uses them to generalize for the whole population with a lot of sterotyping thrown in. She fails to realize that some people truley do not base their opinions of others on the color of their skin. Many people are raised to just love people and treat them with respect without concern of skin color. I found very little useful information.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Answers I Was Looking For.......2007-05-30

This was a quick read, and very informative. It did include a lot of the author's personal experiences (making it quick), but didn't offer as much practical advice as I was hoping for. The book affirmed much of what I already know and do, but did not offer much in the way of new information. I do think I will try some of her other works that were referenced.

4 out of 5 stars No excuses!!!.......2007-05-25

The reason I like this book is because, even though it was written by an African American author, it offers NO EXCUSES. I am an Urban School, middle class, white male teacher, and I love my job and my students. The reality, however, is that (in the words of Malcolm X) "African Americans will never be respected and treated equally until they become educated and earn the respect of other races." A lot of books I have read on helping African American students have made excuses, blaming other races and living situations, and the system, etc. This writer offers no excuses and just explains why some children act the way that they do and how to then deal with them. It also offers suggestions how to counter-act their excuses and complaints to show them success. I love it!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love of Learning.......2007-03-14

This book would serve as a good reference for anyone teaching students of color. I have read many books on ways to teach minorities. This book is one that I refer to constantly.

5 out of 5 stars Walk a Mile in My Shoes.......2004-12-28

Through Ebony Eyes tackles a difficult subject with grace and truth. The author, a Black woman, has been a student, a classroom teacher, a college professor, and a teacher of teachers. She knows her subject intimately. As an educator, my goal is to teach all students to the best of my ability. Before I read this book, I would have said that I was a color-blind teacher, looking at all students the same. I had to come to grips with my own cultural identity and biases. Ms. Thompson doesn't condemn or belittle but believes that all teachers desire their students to learn and excel. This is a sociological study complete with research data, charts and graphs and case studies but is not intimidating to read. At the end she includes a program for educators to pursue to improve their teaching of children of color, and a list of books to read and reflect on. I want to empasize that this book is not a "preachy" book, but one I found revealing and extremely readable. I would recommend this book highly to anyone in the field of education, anyone thinking of becoming an educator, and to parents.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks from Bubba.......2007-10-03

I adopted a year old dog that had been rescued by a friend from a puppy mill. Bubba was scared of the world, cowering in his crate for the first week. He was afraid of every noise, scared of every person. I bought the book,"Help For Your Fearful Dog", and proceeded to follow the suggestions of Ms. Wilde. It was slow going at first, but as each day and week progressed Bubba began to make astonishing progress. As suggested in the book, we started to school together (Bubba is on his third class)and it has made all the difference in the world. This book and its gameplan for your fearful dog works. Just ask Bubba.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Owners of Fearful Dogs.......2007-06-24

This is one of my favorite dog behavior books in the last 5 years. As a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I have been recommending this book to my clients as a complement to their training programs. They love it! They are so glad to have a resource that they can share with family members and friends to help everyone better understand their dog. Nicole Wilde does an excellent job of presenting information in a way that is easy for the average dog owner to understand, but still keeps it interesting for the professional dog trainer.

I give it 5 stars and 4 Paws up!

5 out of 5 stars I Love "Help for Your Fearful Dog"!.......2007-05-28

As a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant I have to say this is a "must have" on every professional's bookshelf as well as many dogowner's. As have many of Nicole's books in the past, this one lived up to its name. Not only is it helpful but it is written in "plain English" and with a lot of humor to boot! I now make a habit of consulting the wonderful bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter before I finish my behavior treatment plans just to make sure I haven't forgotten another great suggestion that my clients will want to try out!

I also like how Nicole delves into complementary therapies such as TTouch, aromatherapy, Flower Essences and more.

This book is well worth the price!

Book Description

A beautiful woman glances at you, then looks away and doesn't notice you for the rest of the night. What did you do wrong? I'm about to tell you... and we'll fix it so it doesn't happen again. She could be a brilliant neurosurgeon, an accomplished jazz musician, or a compassionate listner.

When you first lay eyes on her sitting at the next table, your first impression is likely to be more on the lines of "Whoa-nice body!" Men's initial reactions are primal, simple, and to the point. Women are cool with that. That's why that neursurgeon gal is wearing the tube top/mini skirt. Therefore you need to understand that women's first impressions are anything but simple. She may look like she's casually glancing your way, but in reality her eyes are roving all over you like one of those bond-film mini-spy-cams, and her brain whirring like a high speed supercomputer. She's taking a complex head-to-toe inventory involving megabytes of clear and specific information that you had no idea you were revealing. No matter what the ads say, there simply isn't one perfect shirt, or pick-up line, or haircut,or cologne that will reel women in. All women are looking for the same basic qualities in men. The direct approach is the most productive way to break the ice with a beautiful woman. When approaching her, you look at her face-to-face and make direct eye contact only. The first thing that you must mentally show and prove to her is that you most importantly respect her as a human being,. This means look at her in high esteem. In this situation, the best way to obtain a friend is to be a friend.

She doesn't need to know that your checks bounce like a rubber ball in a handball tournament. Here are some free tips to exaggerate your wealth, even across a crowded room. First carry a money clip instead of a wallet. It's an accessory that show women you are financially secure enough to throw around money. Next, whatever else you have to skimp on, drop some money on the shoes. Women gauge other women's fiscal health by looking at their shoes.(It's generally easier to look good in inexpensive clothes than inexpensive shoes.) They will judge you the same way. Shoes that look pricier usually are made of smooth supple leather that doesn't crack over time, and thicker more substantial soles. Also note that a woman's subconcious mind toward your "resources" includes your education. Since studies show that women are least confident in the subjects of math and science, displaying confidence here will convince her you're Einstein across the board. So bone up on the Learning Channel.

When she passes you on the way to the powder room, the snippet she'll hear may sound like, "Although it lives in the sea, the horeshoe crab can actually drown if you turn it upside down and pour water over it." You see the human mind is motivated by one thing and one thing only. It is results. When your mind sees results it will do it again and again. It will take the success and automatically apply it to another situation and another and so on. We are leaders in the PRACTICAL APPLICATION of advanced technology guaranteed to produce immediate results that you and your brain instantly recognize. It is your great need for results that have motivated us to present you a manual that you will learn how to meet, date, marry, and raise a family with a beautiful woman in a normal, healthy, and functional manner.
