For the past forty years Beer and Johnston have been the uncontested leaders in the teaching of undergraduate engineering mechanics. Their careful presentation of content, unmatched levels of accuracy, and attention to detail have made their texts the standard for excellence. The revision of their classic Mechanics of Materials features an updated art and photo program as well as numerous new and revised homework problems.
The text's superior Online Learning Center (www.mhhe.com/beermom4e) includes an extensive Self-paced, Mechanics, Algorithmic, Review and Tutorial (S.M.A.R.T.), created by George Staab and Brooks Breeden of The Ohio State University, that provides students with additional help on key concepts. The custom website also features animations for each chapter, lecture powerpoints, and other online resources for both instructors and students.

Continues the tradition of needless and overpriced revisions........2007-07-07
The last new substantial advance in basic mechanics of materials (the concept of shear center) was 80 or so years ago. Buy this new overpriced edition of the textbook only if required to for school. Den Hartog's "Strength of Materials" or an earlier version of Beer & Johnson or Popov will save you money without sacrificing any content.
Mech Engineering.......2007-02-13
This book was required for my Mechanics of Materials course in my major of Mechanical Engineering. The readings and examples are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. SuperSaving shipping rocks!
Mechanics of Materials review.......2007-01-04
I needed another copy of this book and it has been helpful to have it in my library.
Poor answer key.......2006-02-09
The book explained the concepts of the subject well enough, but the number of typos in the problems and in the answer key led to many hours of frustration. I was often under the impression I was doing something wrong, only to find out the givens in a problem had incorrect prefixes, or some other error.
Good Coverage of Complex Material.......2006-02-01
This book provides the reader with a good basic understanding of the subject. I recommend it to the apprentice engineer or designer or technician wanting to gain a good understanding of the basics of how loads and materials affect the shape of structures and machine design.

Textbook.......2007-03-03
It has a clear organization, and interesting insets. For a textbook, it intrigues. The comic inserts are a tip of the hat to culture, and everything is up-to-date.
Careful..........2007-02-24
This is an okay book for note taking and has a lot of the terms identified, but please note THIS IS NOT THE TEXT BOOK!!! I'm not sure whose fault it was but when I went to buy it it only stated the tilte and cover of the textbook. I had to go back and buy the book elsewhere. Please be careful! As for the book itself it is a thin paperback notebook with key tearms (arbitrary as well as book terms) on the left side and a blank sheet to write notes on the left. The terms are pretty well chosen and helped me on a test. If this is all you want then get it but once agian be careful.
Great bookq.......2007-02-17
I love the book. I am using it for a communication class I am taking and it is extremely helpful and easy to read. It uses today's terminology and is very up to date in regards to examples used and the way that its worded. It is a great book to learn a lot about communication that we don't necessarily learn from day to day interaction.
Misleading Title.......2007-01-19
Was very disappointed when I received 'Cram101 Textbook Outlines' to accompany "Looking Out Looking In". I thought I had ordered the book "Looking Out Looking In". Very misleading when purchasing this. I don't know if something was listed wrong or not, but when ordering I usually type in the ISB # to find the book I need. Somehow I got the Looking Out... Textbook Outlines.
not the actual book.......2007-01-19
This is the Cram101 textbook outline, not the actual book. I was unpleasantly surprised by this when I received it in the mail after paying to have it expedited. The title that amazon puts is misleading, even the other customer reviews are misleading. The only place that mentions Cram101 is the publishers review - which I found only after I got this worthless book.
Book Description
Featuring an ideal balance of managerial issues and quantitative techniques, this new Fifth Edition of Russell and Taylor's comprehensive introduction to operations management keeps pace with current innovations and issues in the field, particularly those related to the impact of information technology and the global business environment on OM. The authors present the concepts clearly and logically, and help students see how OM relates to real business.
Russell and Taylor recognize that many students struggle with the quantitative material in their Operations Management course. That's why their text offers extensive collection of exercises and solved problems, along with outstanding problem-solving support, including eGrade Plus. eGrade Plus links problems from the book to relevant sections in an online version of the text, and provides opportunities for practice and a quantitative survival guide.

Highly recommended.......2007-09-28
I am half way through and I like it so far. Frankly I am puzzled by other reviewers complaining about "lack of real code examples", they clearly have not read the book carefully: it comes with tons of sample code (online) written in different languages, publishers/authors simply did not want to waste the precious real estate. The book is nearly a thousand pages already.
Otherwise this is a great CS book. Yes there is some math in it, but don't be scared - there is an appendix with all necessary mathematical background you'll need (and you don't need much). I was surprised to see so much historical references in this book, it teaches you not just about most major branches of AI, but also about how they started and where originated from in a "problem -> solution" form. For instance when they talk about genetic algorithms they actually go ahead and write a comprehensive comparison of analogies between biological evolution, genes and their computer-generated counterparts referencing the original work of Darwin and others.
If you're into AI, applied mathematics or computer science, I have no doubt you'll enjoy this book: it's not too focused on something specific (and something you'd need a PhD to understand) while not too shallow and covers fairly wide spectrum of AI problems, including (!) ethical and philosophical issues like "what happens if we succeed?"
Highly recommended.
Worth a million.......2007-09-26
An author of this book is said to have commented that its writing has made him a millionaire. It is used in over 1000 universities for a simple reason, it is good. The book uses the concept of an agent to unify the formerly fragmented field of AI and to link together concepts as diverse as logic programming and ethics. It is very easy to read and touches every area of modern research interest I can think of. The problems have a nice variety of difficulties (although there are no worked-out solutions in the book) and provide a mix between theory and practice, introducing the careful student to concepts and papers not developed in the main text of the chapter. The bibliography is well laid-out and provides useful depth (one of my current research interests was sparked by reading one of the referenced papers in the 2nd chapter).
My only complaint so far (not having finished the entire book) is that some of the definitions in chapter 17's whirlwind introduction to game theory were a little vague. But, a quick look at some other sources clarified things immensely.
It is rare to find a textbook as interesting and clear as this one. If a professor is requiring that you read it, consider yourself fortunate. If you are thinking of reading it yourself, you also are blessed. Look forward to many pleasant evenings.
Worthwhile.......2007-08-23
This book is very worthwhile if you are looking into AI with the purpose of understanding the various techniques, etc. It gives a really good background, and I find it useful. The only changes I would have made (for me, not everyone else) would be to include a few short chapters on second order logic, and the basic mathematics and math terms used in the book. It assumes more knowlege in math than I have. It would also be nice if it had a "recommended reading" page, listing those texts that would be useful for an AI beginner to review in order to understand the math and logic referred to. (My degree was in 79, and I only had a very basic calculus course...not too deep...I can diffentiate, but that is all).
It would just be nice if they could list reference books for people who are math nieve.
Thorough book.......2007-01-04
This book was very thorough in many facets of Artificial Intelligence. It was a tremendous help in the class I took and will be a great reference for future years.
Thick, informative & loads of diagrams.......2007-01-04
Useful book which at first explains in great detail the history, foundations for AI and the different approaches AI takes on. Your course will probably not use all the material in the book but still makes for interesting reading. Would recommend if you can pick up a copy cheap.
Customer Reviews:
must read.......2007-10-21
This is a topic that few of us know much about. My personal feeling is that the current crisis of pediatric obesity is due to glutamates. It would behoove us all to learn more about how the american food industry is enticing us to eat more of their products, while at the same time creating monumental health problems for their customers. Something must be done before we all have diabetes etc.
Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills .......2007-09-29
What you don't know CAN kill you! This is a must read, if you are pursuing good health, despite the FDA and Big Pharma desire to keep you chained until death.
I thought artificial additives were bad, now I *KNOW* how bad they are!.......2007-09-23
As a health enthusiast I was aware of the dangers of artificial sweeteners, MSG and other man made nasties but it was not until I came across Blaylock's Excitotoxins that I *UNDERSTOOD* just how big a factor they are.
Learn just how many different ways the industry hides excitotoxins under a conveniently confusing array of names. I am grateful for the extra choice Blaylock has empowered me with every time I purchase groceries.
I read that a minority feel that this book implies that excitotoxins are the only cause of the possible ailments / diseases. I did not get this impression at all. I felt their point of view was narrowed, and their logic too simple. Like saying you can drown in the ocean, therefore the ocean causes drownings. Yes the statement is true but you can also drown in fresh water, oil, or a big enough container of diet soda (excitotoxins included).
This is a great book. I am certain it has extended and increased the quality of my life.
What your eyes opened?.......2007-06-27
This has been a very helpful book and very easy to understand. I have several friends who have health problems and the doctors are unable to find a cause. After reading this book and seeing that allergies to many foods could be the cause I informed them about the glutamates in foods and they are now getting better by eating a diet that does not have additives. I suffer from psoriasis and it is clearing up since I changed my eating. This book has been a God send.
Everyone needs to read this book.......2007-05-14
The contents of this book are helpful to everyone. It contains information that will be helpful to all people that want to live healthier lives and protect their children from a disrupted future. We have been given choices in our life and this book will help you make better choices by the things that you eat. Know what you eat and what it is made of.

Since its publication in 1946, George Orwell's fable of a workers' revolution gone wrong has rivaled Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea as the Shortest Serious Novel It's OK to Write a Book Report About. (The latter is three pages longer and less fun to read.) Fueled by Orwell's intense disillusionment with Soviet Communism, Animal Farm is a nearly perfect piece of writing, both an engaging story and an allegory that actually works. When the downtrodden beasts of Manor Farm oust their drunken human master and take over management of the land, all are awash in collectivist zeal. Everyone willingly works overtime, productivity soars, and for one brief, glorious season, every belly is full. The animals' Seven Commandment credo is painted in big white letters on the barn. All animals are equal. No animal shall drink alcohol, wear clothes, sleep in a bed, or kill a fellow four-footed creature. Those that go upon four legs or wings are friends and the two-legged are, by definition, the enemy. Too soon, however, the pigs, who have styled themselves leaders by virtue of their intelligence, succumb to the temptations of privilege and power. "We pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and organisation of the farm depend on us. Day and night, we are watching over your welfare. It is for your sake that we drink that milk and eat those apples." While this swinish brotherhood sells out the revolution, cynically editing the Seven Commandments to excuse their violence and greed, the common animals are once again left hungry and exhausted, no better off than in the days when humans ran the farm. Satire Animal Farm may be, but it's a stony reader who remains unmoved when the stalwart workhorse, Boxer, having given his all to his comrades, is sold to the glue factory to buy booze for the pigs. Orwell's view of Communism is bleak indeed, but given the history of the Russian people since 1917, his pessimism has an air of prophecy. --Joyce Thompson
Book Description
Orwell's brilliant 1946 satire, chronicling a revolution staged by the animals on Mr. Jones's farm.

"Four Legs Good, Two Legs Bad.".......2007-10-15
Just before he dies, Old Major, an old pig, shares a dream he had with the animals of Manor Farm. In the dream, he saw a future where animals were no longer the servants of man but enjoyed the profits of their own labor.
His dream became reality much sooner then he imagined, however. Shortly after his death, the animals spontaneously revolt against the farm's owner, Jones, a mean drunk.
With the humans gone, the animals start working the farm together, anxious to enjoy the rewards. They also form their own government, a complete democracy where every animal has a say. They create seven commandments that they will all live by to make the newly renamed Animal Farm an even better place to live.
It isn't long, however, before the pigs begin to take a place of leadership because of their superior intelligence. Two in particular, Snowball and Napoleon, rise to the top and always take opposite sides on every issue.
The first year, things go smoothly. But the second year, things begin to fall apart and a leader emerges, slowly gaining more power. Will the other animals go along with the changes?
Having heard about this classic all my life, I finally decided it was time to become acquainted with it. I can see why everyone talks about it so much. It is a powerful allegory about the dangers of Socialism. And, while some of the commentary directed squarely at the USSR may be lost on today's readers, anyone familiar with the history of that country or the other communist countries in our history will certainly get the point. It's amazing how accurate George Orwell was years before things got bad in Russia.
While it did take me a few minutes to truly get the ending, it was very chilling.
The best part is, the book is fun, too. The story moves quickly and the animal characters are so well drawn it's hard not to get pulled in to the story. I was hooked and couldn't wait to see how it ended.
Some classics are boring and hard to get through. This isn't one of them. Don't fear the classic label, but pick this up and read it today. You'll be glad you did.
Amazed!.......2007-10-15
Having read Animal Farm in one sitting, i feel that it transcends the obvious allusions to communisms and the likes to something far more poetic. Human nature, it seems, has a very deceiving quality to it. Orwell made it clear that the book was parallel with real life (Russian Revolution and such) and similarities are easily made between characters in the book and real life people. Although i'd say the biggest lesson learned is the power of mind-manipulation and how few can control many through fear.
Simply put, you can call it a process... Bad people reign--good people overthrow bad people---hunger for power consumes a handful of the good people---manipulation/propaganda is instilled and WAHLA ---Once again Bad people reign... It's a sad cycle that this book has beautifully portrayed.
Definitely worth a read, especially if you are "into" politics.
Lucas.
A Brilliant Satire of Government Politics!!!.......2007-10-07
George Orwell was not only the author of 1984 but Animal Farm as well as written numerous essays, articles, etc. about his take on politics. In 1984, society was in the future under a totalitarian dictatorship where nothing was sacred or left to chance. In Animal Farm which I think it's more effective and definitely better reading material than 1984 is the story about a farm of animals who take over the farm against Jones, a drunken, abusive farmer and master of Manor Farm. At first, the rules were applied but slowly changed according to the leaders' rules. The animals in charge were symbolically pigs named Napoleon and his right-hand man, Snowball. Napoleon begins breaking the rules by sleeping in the main house and having parties with the other pigs. The rules or commandments are representative of Moses and the Jews when they were going to the promised land and received the ten commandments. Also, the rules begin to change when the pigs in charge become more like Jones by abusing alcohol and even killing other animals when they disobeyed. Slowly, the animals that were once united by their hatred towards Jones were becoming divided again amongst themselves. The story is quite a classic novel and better suited for younger readers than 1984.
The Rise of Totalitarianism.......2007-10-07
Animal Farm is a strong metaphor for the rise of tyranny using the model of a failing communism after the deliberate overthrow and subsequent breakdown of capitalism and democracy. In Orwell's story oppressed farm animals rebel against their masters only to find themselves falling prey to the inherent problem of an escalating despotism following emancipation that culminates in an even vaster gap of inequality between upper and lower classes with the wants of the very few outweighing the needs of a neglected majority that are slowly turned into isolated brainwashed slaves controlled by fear.
The ideology of equality is sound but in overthrowing the ruling elite who cannot say that yet another privileged will not emerge? An even stronger dictatorship that can control the masses with the intimidating thought that if the populace doesn't obey any order then the old ways can come back? What makes Animal Farm so good is that it explains how revolutions designed to close the differences in rank can be easily exploited. This is the inevitable dilemma faced by all civilizations that desire governed order and is especially true of socialism and communism. Nobody has captured the difficulty of the exploitation of trust and power any better than Orwell has done with Animal Farm.
Animal Farm doesn't answer any questions but makes lots of them and is all about awareness of these possibilities, a conundrum born out from our systemic need to consolidate power socially.
Orwell based his work on a combination of the Bolshevik revolutionaries and Stalinism but the overall message is a one of warning about how any system of political control can become corrupt if it is allowed run with carte blanche.
It is also a message about how awareness of one's own strength can suddenly change the balance and for this reason has been seen as subversive material. Animal Farm is often banned by most totalitarian regimes and even some governments had banned it because they didn't understand it or believed that its anti-communism message was considered too strong for public consumption.
A historical commentary.......2007-09-30
Best book ever written. It's important to note that it is not only about Russian Communism but equally about the French revolution. Orwell himself was a disillusioned socialist, so to view this book (as conservatives do) as a simple polemical against Communism is a distortion. Rather it is a tragedy about many years of history.
Orwell correctly never denies that Mr. Jones abused his animals. He correctly recognizes the socialist dream as exactly that. It's worth noting that the theme song of the revolution, "Beasts of England" is an exact parody of the old Socialist poem "Men of England" by Percy Shelley from the early 19th century. The character Napoleon the pig is both Napoleon Bonaparte and Stalin. Orwell's relentless cynicism portrays most of the animals as far too stupid to realize what's happening as the revolution betrays its original principles. The most sympathetic character is the old donkey who knows better, but can only watch helplessly as the dogs and pigs establish their tyranny. Its ending corresponds closely with Napoleon (Bonaparte) crowning himself king.
As far as advice, Orwell offers none. Figure it out yourself.

Cheryl Russell is articulate and specific in walking a person through the ropes of eBay from square one. She teaches how to do business, not just randomly sell (or try to sell) products. Her book covers details of recordkeeping and how to really grow a large, successful business. She methodically teaches the steps to success and helps the reader see the big picture of growing a business from scratch. Excellent resource!

Do Yourself a Favor and Read This Book.......2007-02-09
Let me tell you why this book is important:
1. Listing fees on ebay can eat you alive if you don't pay attention.
2. Security risks are high on ebay,as its success has brought every low-life in the world into its realm.
3. If you want to make a bunch of money buying and selling goods, ebay is a place to do it.
That said, I believe this book provides as good of an overview of the ebay business as any.

An Amazing Book.......2007-09-19
I cannot begin to express what a help this book and its program have been. I was mired in grief over losses going back into childhood, and absolutely devastated by a recent one which prompted me to order the book in the first place. This isn't something you just read. To affect a genuine recovery from grief you have to be willing to DO what the authors guide you to do, but it's absolutely worth the effort. Following through with the program doesn't cost a thing and can be done in the comfort of your own easychair. All you need is a pen or pencil and a few sheets of paper (a legal pad would be helpful but isn't necessary). I heartily recommend this to anyone who has suffered a loss, recently or in the past. It's a lifelong program that will help a person recover from loss, not just wait for time to heal (it doesn't!) or go around the loss by sticking it on an emotional shelf and forgetting it. An absolute must for anyone who really wants to RECOVER from a loss!

A lifetime tool..........2007-09-14
I was so impressed with this program that I got certified to facilitate it. It is a tool that can be used again and again as we hurdle the situations in life that might stop us in our tracks. If you are stuck in your grief, or are having trouble moving through a loss in your life, whether it be divorce or any other stress inducing change I highly recommend this book as well as the Grief Recovery Outreach Programs.
Based on an earlier edition.......2007-08-16
I read the earlier edition of this book, which deals with death only, and not other losses. I found it fascinating enough that I may try working through the steps outlined with a partner. Yet, I agree with some of the reviewers who feel that all these steps and the graphing of the highs and lows in a relationship may not be what is needed. I lost my husband of 30 years following a 2 1/2 year struggle with cancer, and I don't think regrets are a part of my grief. I miss him, and always will, even though I will eventually move on with my life. I'm not sure there is any such thing as recovery from the loss of one's life partner. There have been other deaths in my life: of parents, a stepchild, friends and lovers, but losing the person with whom I've shared every day (except for a few absences) is something I've never before experienced. I do agree with the premise of the book that our society just doesn't accept loss and grief, and doesn't know how to deal with it, other than to ignore it, or encourage people to get over it, or replace whatever or whomever has been lost. The book did strike me as highly prescriptive, and I can understand that this may bother some. I have done graphing of highs and lows in life in other contexts, however, and found it quite illuminating. So, I am willing to give this a try.
A Great Book for Moving Beyond Grief.......2007-08-01
This book is a great book for those who are grieving any type of loss. I recently lost my husband, and this book offered me insights into the grieving process and how to move beyond it.
Very good and popular resource... (review by personal coach).......2007-06-15
This book is an excellent resource for those who are grieving any kind of loss. It provides an action plan that is gentle and provides direction during a difficult, confusing and often disorienting time. I have used this resource with my clients and I know many other therapists who regard it highly and use it in their practices. If you get this, I would also recommend the classic On Grief and Grieving: Finding the Meaning of Grief Through the Five Stages of Loss. After a big loss of any kind, I think it is very important to take action, but also make sense of the loss. Both resources I mention in this review will help with making meaning out of the loss and getting reoriented.

BLess his Heart.......2007-02-13
Hibbeler is probably the most reliable author when it comes to Mechanics of Materials. A must have for Mechancial, Environmental, Civil and Materials Engineers. Explains everything in the easiest and most practical matter, without skipping anything of value.
Best textbook I've ever had.......2006-01-17
Simple, concise, great examples, great illustrations, great problems. The style is: present a topic briefly, derive equation(s) quickly, show 3-4 examples of using said equation(s), give a couple dozen problems, and move right on to the next topic. Thanks Mr. Hibbeler, for making engineering students' lives just a bit easier.
a first course in mechanics.......2004-12-25
Hibbeler offers an undergraduate text for the mechanical engineering student. The materials studied are solids, not fluids. The discussion starts with the simplest case of treating the bodies as totally rigid. Then we see a development of Newtonian mechanics, commencing with statics. No net velocities, in some obvious reference frame.
But even in this simple case, Hibbeler shows the student how to find the balance of forces in such archetypal instances as beams.
Later, he talks about how solids can to varying extents resist stresses. Be these longitudinal or torsional stresses. The resultant stress-strain relationships are a fundamental concept in mechanics, and the student should be able to follow the treatment quite adequately.
