Customer Reviews:
MENDELSOHN IS A MAVERICK, BUT DEAD ON CORRECT.......2007-09-29
Some of the most critical life-affecting decisions regarding your child occur while pregnant and during the first moments, months, and years of their lives--nutrition, breast feeding, vaccinations, etc. Too many parents blindly defer to their ObGyns & pediatricians, and are not truly informed about the choices they make. You can get the same tired establishment line about how thimerosal (mercury preservative in vaccines) doesn't cause Autism in children. But, why even inject one of the most toxic substances known to man into our children the first place?
Sure Mendelsohn is a maverick, but you owe it to yourself to know all sides of the issues regarding your children's health.
My wife's ObGyn lives a block away from us. I am a medical researcher. She dismissed my concerns and questions when my wife was pregnant, and adopted the "I'm the pro here and do what I tell you" attitude. We ignored here advice, and designed an nutritional and supplementation schedule based on scientific research.
Our baby was full-term and rated a perfect 10 on the Apgar rating at birth. Her child, born two months after ours, was born weeks premature, underweight, and very, very ill.
An M.D. isn't a license in omnipotence. You owe it to your baby to read this book to get "the other point of view."
A bit outdated........2007-09-02
I think the book was probibly great in 1984 when it was published. I was a bit disappointed about how outdated it was;it suggested giving a teaspoon of Whiskey for fever to an infant. I wish that the publication date was available to view before purchasing the book and if it was, to make it easier to find.
Times sure have changed in the last 23 years. The concepts are good but I think Dr. Mendelsohn needs to update the book and re-release it.
I'm sharing this with all the mothers I know!.......2007-07-03
I purchased this book for two reasons: 1.) I am a mother of two young children who has had bad experiences with a few pediatricians in our pediatric group, and 2.) I work in the mental health field and a lot of the research I do on autism references Dr. Mendeholsohn's book and his position on vaccines.
With my own children, I have often felt disappointed with my well baby visits and have left the doctors office feeling that my doctors didn't really hear what I was saying. This book is so empowering and gives parents the needed information that is not shared with us in most situations. This book has helped me to choose a better doctor for my children and makes me more confident in taking an active role in their health care decisions.
Also, anyone who questions administering vaccinations to their child should read this book. I am utterly shocked that more pediatricians do not share this research with parents! Because this was written in the early 80's, some of the information is slightly outdated but this does not damage the integrity of the book at all. I'm giving copies to all pregnant women I know as well as any other interested parent.
Bought this book in 1985 ...highly recommended reading!.......2007-06-11
I happened to be thinking about when I bought and read this book back in 1985 the year my daughter was born. I can't recall everything in this book this many years later, but I do remember the impact it had on me at the time, as I even wrote to Dr Mendelsohn to thank him for writing this highly informative as well as inspiring book. I was a first time mother and wanted to give my daughter the best start. I feel this book is one every new parent or every parent in general should read and pass along. He was a visionary in retrospect I would imagine, as I was just reading about the plight of parents with children that have autism and the vaccinations..this sparked my memory of this book and how I opted out of these vaccines..and am glad I did. I remember going to one "well baby" clinic when my child was a few months old and the nurse said to me" this is one of the healthiest babies I have ever seen"!!! and she has remained so. Her own friends throughout school always asked why she was hardly ever sick...well, read the book and pay attention to your instincts.
I had a homebirth with a midwife, breastfed until she was two yrs old, did not give her any food or cereal until 6 months, and then made all of her food homemade. I slept in bed with her from the moment she was born, and for the first few years. I did not allow pressure from others to vaccinate, especially with a childs immune system at infancy being so undeveloped. I took to heart the thought of anything that is introduced directly into the bloodstream as is most vaccinations, as opposed to the way we normally contract illnesses, through the mucous membranes. I see how to this day my own child at 22 is healthy and strong and has taken antibiotics maybe a few times in her life. When I was told she had a "slight" ear infection or redness..I would get into the car and crumble up the prescription for the antibiotic... and to this day they are overused.
The bottom line to me is that we should trust in nature and see that illness is not something we have to run to doctors for and get pumped up full of drugs, but to seek out less invasive ways to comfort and treat our children..like with herbs, homeopathics, or just plain rest and lots of loving care.
I see so many children that are sick alot today and are fed poorly, have had a lot of vaccinations, and antibiotics,, cold medicnes, etc..and are "ALWAYS" sick. Many of these children didn't even get the headstart of being breastfed with natures first line of defense for a childs immunities. Let's give this doctor the respect and praise he deserves in giving us this valuable information...and honesty. Not one person knows all there is to know, but we as parents do know our own children...and need to trust that birth, feeding, and the care and wellbeing of our children is a natural process, not one made in a laboratory.
A note: when I went to enroll my daughter in school they told me she could not attend without being vaccinated...so I went and got her at I think 4 yrs old, one shot of the then DPT, but asked to leave out the P pertusis part of it, due to controversies . After the one and only series of shots I found out that if I wrote a note to school saying" due to religious convictions I do not vaccinate my child" it was all I needed for her to continue on straight through high school without.
Proof is in the Pudding.......2007-03-14
This book has been my bible for raising healthy children for the past 18 years and it has never been wrong. None of my brood has been immunized and they are the healthiest kids at school. I birth them at home, even one breech, with ease. I nurse them until them they're toddlers at least and practice what is now called "attachment parenting" that is espoused in the book. It works well and seems so much more natural than what I see more traditional, doctor-led parents go through, much nonsense of which seems to be harmful to their kids instead of good.
I think this book is timeless and still is quite relevant, maybe even more so in our current culture of fear. Parental fear is quite compelling, sometimes leading us to make the wrong choices for our children, and this book helps to keep the fears in check.
Honoring the body's ability to heal itself without the need for drugs; shunning invasive unnecessary procedures like circumcision (none of my boys are circumcised and most of their friends aren't either), ear tubes and tonsillectomies; breastfeeding and putting off solid foods until later; letting fevers run their course naturally; even mostly avoiding hospitals and doctors including well child checkups; has worked so well for us that our kids are considered a phenomenon as am I who just birthed my latest at age 46 -- at home in water.
Read this book and heed its advice. This now-deceased doctor knew what he was talking about and his wisdom is timeless, drawing on medical common sense and trusting the body to heal itself in most circumstances. The book will save you unneeded trips to the hospital and doctor and also a LOT of worry.

Beginning with the "10 Greatest Lies About Pregnancy" (number 10: Lamaze works), and ending with postpartum dementia, Vicki Iovine's Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy has fast become the laywoman's mouthpiece for the American pregnancy experience. Iovine is irreverent, sassy, and incredibly reassuring as she exposes the "truths" of pregnancy and childbirth, from sex to cellulite to cesareans. Iovine birthed four kids in six years, none of them twins, which certainly qualifies her as an expert. The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy does reveal Iovine's particular cultural biases (pregnant or not, most of us don't have record-producer husbands, hang out with supermodels, or wear size-four pants) and philosophical beliefs (she's not a particularly strong proponent of natural childbirth or nursing), but, taken with a grain or two of salt, she provides many hilarious moments, acres of advice, and honest reassurance readers will find nowhere else. --Ericka Lutz

Hysterical!!!!.......2007-10-18
A must have for all mommys to be or anyone who wants to laugh out loud!!!!!
I'd recommend this. .......2007-10-13
I would definitely recommend this book for any mother-to-be. It was a light read, but very humorous and actually quite informative as well. I would definitely recommend that parents-to-be read some of the doctor-authored classics like What to Expect... but it was nice to read about pregnancy from a non-clinical point of view.
Sure she has a sense of humor, but a real GIRLFRIEND might present with some better advice.......2007-10-07
This book is full of biased anecdotes from a woman who, sure, has a blunt and sometimes refreshing sense of humor, but could do some of us Girlfriends a huge favor by not leading us down a road sure to be full of possibly dangerous interventions. I believe that us Mommy's should make informed decisions about how we care for ourselves in pregnancy and childbirth. If you want to feel better about your cellulite, and unsympathetic husband, Ms. Iovine is a good girlfriend, the kind that can make you feel better about it by saying "you're not the only one" and help out with a blow-it-off attitude and sarcastic humor. Do not however be swayed without your own research from confirming and practicing (or at least getting an educated and empowering birth team and trying) an unmedicated childbirth. For the sake of your own health and your new baby's, put away your Size 4 attitude, and realize that when you commit to pregnancy (and certainly 4 for that matter) it takes work, education and confidence in yourself... a few great girlfriends certainly help, for sure, but rely on the ones who know when to give you the facts and the ones who know when to lie to you to boost your self-confidence. They both certainly have their place and time, but Ms. Iovine has clearly shown which kind she is. For a good education, please do not rely on this book. For a few laughs... maybe.
Loved it!.......2007-10-07
Very funny and informative. I recommend for all moms-to-be. It will teach you while you laugh.
A Must Read!.......2007-10-05
A friend of mine purchased this book for me when I became pregnant and I can honestly say that it is by far my "go-to" pregnancy guide. Vicki's advice is honest, irreverant and hilarious! I think many other books out there on the market put unnecessary pressure on new moms-to-be to be perfect. This book reminds you that you are a human being, and it's okay to not be perfect when you're pregnant. For once in your life you should relax and focus on caring for that baby inside you (and to keep your sense of humor too!) Some of the other reviews state that this book tells you to eat whatever you want and not exercise for 9 months, but that's not the case. I think they are misreading the message. The message is to stop trying to be a "superwoman" when you are pregnant and to just be healthy and take care of yourself. In our skinny obsessed culture, it's refreshing to hear that it's okay to eat and to not devote your life to the gym when you're pregnant for pete's sake! You have the rest of your life to run on that treadmill, so I say (and I'm sure Vicki would agree) - take a walk, eat a cookie and feel beautiful!

just get tested.......2007-06-30
If you suspect you may have a thyroid problem, why not just get tested and find out?
IS YOUR THROID MAKING YOU FAT?.......2007-02-22
Easy to read and understand and very helpful and informative.
I bought 5 to send to my family and friends.
Also a must read under the same topic is "Living Well With Hyopthyroidism"
by Mary Shomom. The book is full of helpful websites and informtaion on how to find good doctors that practice alternative medicine in every region of the country.
Thyroid Making You Fat book.......2007-02-16
I just got this book out of storage to re-read and I realize it's wasted money. I am already on natural thyroid replacement and with that I have lost a lot of weight but to follow a 1000 calorie a day diet (in one place he says 800 per day) is impossible for me. My doctor wants me getting highly nutritous foods and there is no way on this amount. Plus, how many of us are willing to do this for not 1 week, not 2, but for 4 weeks! AND when I was doing aerobics religiously and following 1000 cal per day, I didn't lose weight but this is what he recommends. Never again.
I gave it 2 stars because it did convince me, a couple of years ago, to find a doctor who uses natural thyroid instead of just synthetics. If the synthetics work for you, hooray but they didn't for me.
No help.......2007-01-10
I didn't find this book of any help. I was also already diagnosed but hoped to find a way to lose weight after 15 years of gradual increase in weight due to an underactive thyroid (hashimoto's thyroiditis). I couldn't possibly stick to this diet and decided that it wasn't worth trying anyway, just to find out what I know already. I had hoped it would teach me a way to eat that would help me lose weight, but it does not. It might just be of use to people who haven't yet been diagnosed, but I doubt it, because if the doctor hasn't diagnosed you yet, he is not going to do so on the basis of a book.
A Great Book To Fill in the Gaps That Your Doc Doesn't.......2007-01-07
After struggling with a low thyroid condition for 9 years, this book gave me information that was very helpful in understanding the reasons that synthetic thyroid hormone was no longer working. This book taught me that my weight is more of a reflection of how my thyroid gland is working more than what I was eating. It also helped me to understand why, that while eating 600-800 healthy calories per day and exercising 1 hour per day...I still wasn't loosing weight. Wish I would have read it a year ago!

Customer Reviews:
Wish I'd gotten the updated version.......2007-08-07
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me. She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health. Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training. I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard. I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply.

Please note how old this edition is (1992!) and choose the updated edition Eat Well, Lose Weight, While Breastfeeding: The Complete Nutrition Book for Nursing Mothers. We've learned a lot about diet, nutrients, and bfing in the last 14+ years!
Well Written!.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. I found that it was really easy to read and it didn't take long to read the entire book. I really didn't want to "diet" while breastfeeding but was wanting information on how I should eat while breastfeeding. I found that when I started eating better by following the book's suggestions and began excercising regularly, I started losing half a pound a week. I am now proud to say that I weigh less than I did before I got pregnant and am still nursing my 7 month old daughter.
Are you kidding me...???.......2006-10-04
This book was such a disappointment to me! The majority of her information is completely inaccurate. I would have expected a little more coming from a dietician. The only thing I can say about this book on a positive note, is a few of the recipes are okay and she supports breastfeeding. I felt like this book was/is right with our culture...focused on how mom looks after having a baby. New mom's have enough on their plate worrying about how to adjust to this little person who's taken over their life. They don't need another book emphasizing how their body should look or perform. Every mom is different, I know. I just think mothers should be focused on breastfeeding successfully and loving their sweet baby, not trying to fit into prepregnancy pants 2 weeks postpartum. A lot has changed in 14 years and new mom's need to realize that as well...this book is 14 years old. Good luck.
Excellent Read!!.......2006-05-29
This book was the best. There is so much useful information inside that is easy to understand and written in such a way it reads guickly and you don't have to dwell over each page to grasp it. It had the information I couldn't find other places about the nutrients you need while breastfeeding and how to know that you can eat healthy and lose the weight without having to worry about depriving your child or yourself of the wonderful bond of breastfeeding.

The Yeast Syndrome.......2007-04-24
I walked around with a bloated painful stomach for a year. The fatigue was debilitating, and and I was always in a fog. I did the phase one diet for five days and it was as if the fatigue and fog just washed out of my body. The greatest feeling was the clarity of thinking returning. Even if you don't read anything in the book, the diet is more than helpful; I think that understanding of this diet is essential if you have this problem. It will make a difference; for me the difference felt life-saving.
Excelent!.......2006-03-16
Exclent book on the subject. Very thorough, very objective with a lot if hints.
I recomend it.
Beware of pseudoscience.......2005-11-28
It is very convenient to come up with a vague diagnosis for vague symptoms. There is very little hard evidence to support this diagnsosis. I am sure that there are people who are sensitive or allergic to yeast who feel much better when they avoid it. I think the problem is that anyone who doesn't feel good has symptoms that fit into those attributed to this problem. Testimonial benefits are worthless. Watch late night TV for diet products, hair growth products, etc... if you doubt that. I do agree that if we all ate a natural preservative free diet, exercised, etc.. that we'd all feel better. I am just not ready to attribute that all to yeast hypersensitivity and the authors have very little real evidence that this condition exists or is the cause of problems for so many.
Life saving!! Give it 10 stars!!.......2004-05-24
I am a health professional and in 1995 at the age of 39 I found myself on 9 prescription medications and my health was quickly failing. I had a severe sleep disorder, tender spots, terrible arthralgia, reflux disease, colitis, neuropathy, dizziness, and fibromyalgia syndrome. My sister-in-law suggested that I had yeast syndrome. Of course being a by the book RN I blew her off. One day in a book store I happened to spot this book and leafed through it. I started crying right there because my doctors couldn't help me anymore but here was my help. This book saved my life. When I went to the health food store for help with the herbals the owner found it hard to believe that I could still work and raise a family in my condition. My husband, co-workers and doctor couldn't believe the difference in just a few weeks of starting the program. My doctor asked me what happened and recommended the book to other patients. It was not a fast process but I am fully recovered and sleep like a baby when the kids let me. I no longer feel like my body is 50 years older than I am. I have told countless people about this book and am very grateful it is being reprinted as I loaned mine out and it was never returned. This book is much more detailed than The Yeast Connection and was much more helpful to me. Thank you Dr. Trowbridge for saving my life.
This book 's info WORKS!.......2004-04-15
As a caregiver who had to educate herself about candida overgrowth in order to help her father with systemic candida, I can vouch for this particular reference above all the others out there. The diet works, the supplement info is accurate, specific products named (toothpaste, gargle, natural antifungals)-all truly are correct and do work. I have most of the other candida books and cookbooks, but many of them contain inaccurate material. This one volume is a treasure.
Yes, you have to study for yourself, and yes, you have to change shopping and food prep habits, but it is all worth it!
(I followed the diet myself while dealing with my father's, and I felt well-fed and full of energy ). Every internist out there needs to read and study this book.

Just the book I needed........2007-05-14
Answers key questions about preventing and treating Acid Reflus and other gastrointestional problems.
My only complaint about the book is it should show some diagrams of the organs involved explanations.
Gastrointestinal Health by Miskovitz.......2005-04-03
This is an excellent medicinal reference on the workings of the
gastrointestinal system. The book is written from the perspective
of conventional medicine. It discusses classic gastrointestinal
issues; such as, difficulty in swallowing, gas, non-cardiac
discomfort, chest pain, nausea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and constipation. Abdominal pain on the left side is associated with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Pain on the right
side of the abdomen may be Crohns related. Diarrhea and rectal
bleeding are the classic symptoms of Crohns disease. The CT scan,
MRI, endoscopy and colorectal examinations are the classic
invasive techniques for detection. Non-invasive tests involve
analysis of the breath, blood tests, stool and fecal occult exams. Duodenal ulcers are caused by H-pylori. Standard treatments are H2 blockers, pepcid AC and proton pump inhibitors.
Prilosec is a classic proton inhibitor.
The work is a must for any health enthusiast. The problems
described are classic middle-age conditions encountered by
large portions of the population for a variety of reasons
ranging from genetics to junk food consumption. The work is
a solid investment for the price charged. Acquiring this volume will help you to discuss any of the symptomatology intelligently
with your primary care physician or medical specialist.
Book Description
In her first work of fiction in more than a decade, award-winning novelist Hilma Wolitzer brilliantly renders the intimate details of ordinary life and exposes a host of hidden truths. The Doctor’s Daughter is a haunting portrait of a woman coming to terms with her family history and the fallibility of memory.
One morning, Alice Brill awakes with a sudden awareness that something is wrong. There’s a hollowness in her chest, and a sensation of dread that she can’t identify or shake. Was it something she’s done, or forgotten to do? As she scours her mind for the source of her unease, she confronts an array of disturbing possibilities.
First, there is her marriage, a once vibrant relationship that now languishes stasis. Then there’s her idle, misdirected younger son, who always needs bailing out of some difficulty. Or perhaps Alice’s trepidation is caused by the loss of her career as an editor at a large publishing house, and the new path she’s paved for herself as a freelance book doctor. Or it might be the real doctor in her life: her father. Formerly one of New York’s top surgeons, he now rests in a nursing home, his mind gripped by dementia. And the Eden that was Alice’s childhood–the material benefits and reflected glory of being a successful doctor’s daughter, the romance of her parents’ famously perfect marriage–makes her own domestic life seem fatally flawed.
While struggling to find the root of her restlessness, Alice is buoyed by her discovery of a talented new writer, a man who works by day as a machinist in Michigan. Soon their interactions and feelings intensify, and Alice realizes that the mystery she’s been trying to solve lies not in the present, as she had assumed, but in the past–and in the secrets of a marriage that was never as perfect as it appeared.
Like the best works of Anne Tyler, Sue Miller, and Gail Godwin, The Doctor’s Daughter is private yet universal, luminous and revelatory–and marks the reemergence of a singular talent in American writing.
From the Hardcover edition.

worth the wait.......2007-06-07
Ms. Wolitzer has written a very good book about a woman who is trying to figure out which part of her life to heal first--her father's ailment, her marriage, her neglected spirit, her child's behavior issues. As we get to know her, we get to see ourselves and our own family's dynamics being laid before us.
Good Psychological Fiction.......2007-05-01
"The Doctor's Daughter" by Hilma Wolitzer is an intelligently written mystery of self-discovery. Ultimately, it is about a woman coming to terms with the person she has become.
In the beginning of the story, the protagonist, Alice Brill, has a strange, malignant feeling in her chest. The book takes us on a quest to find out what ails her. Is it breast cancer? Is it a failing in her marriage--a failing in her career? Why did her mother's literary career suddenly stop when she was a child? What seems to be dying inside her: Is it her body or her soul?
Both Alice and her husband are highly educated literary scholars who married with a lovely dream of supporting each other's successful literary career. But after more than two decades of marriage, Alice only sees herself as "a failed Scheherazade who couldn't keep anybody alive with her stories." Instead of creating literature, she earns her living as an editor, a book doctor. She buries her dream of creating her own works of fiction, instead she doctors others' works. Her husband also must bury his literary ambitions after the financial realities of their first child's birth make him take a position in his family's printing business.
The novel takes us on a journey of recollections through Alice's life. Along the way, we get to know her mother, the successful published poet who suddenly stops publishing. Why? We get to know her father, the brilliant, autocratic, narcissistic surgeon. All her life, Alice has a lived in the cocoon fiction of her parent's marital bliss. But is that true? She sees possibilities that all may not have been right with their marriage. Her father is now in a nursing home in the later stage of Alzheimer's, so he is little help in leading her toward the answers to her questions. There seems to be something important that happened back when she was a child that is somehow at the root of the blindingly white, bad feelings that keep reccurring. Along the path toward Alice's destiny with self-discovery, are subplots of therapy, lust, friendship, and marital infidelity.
"The Doctor's Daughter" is good, intelligent, psychological fiction. I look forward to reading more by Hilma Wolitzer. In my estimation, this author can rest assured that she is not, like her protagonist, "a failed Scheherazade."
I just don't get ..........2007-03-24
what happened with the mammogram? Must have had some meaning that went over my head - seemed like it had some importance but is never mentioned again after she misses her appointment. I enjoyed the book otherwise, although I agree with a previous reviewer that the timeline seems off.
Author should check a calendar before writing!.......2006-08-10
This book was just "all right" in my opinion. I had a nagging feeling in my chest, much like the main character, but for other reasons! The timeline did not make sense.
The character mentions finding an envelope postmarked November 18, 1963--her 10th birthday, meaning she was born in November 1953. Speed forward to the present where she is 51 years old and it's June. This would put us in June 2005. She mentions going to her mammography on Friday June 13th. This doesn't make sense to me because in 2005, June 13th was a Sunday!
It might be stupid to let this bother me, but I like novels to feel real. And this just left me unsettled, like the author didn't do her job to check dates.
Otherwise, this was an okay read.
Insulting to the reader.......2006-06-14
I must admit that I finished only 2/3 of this book, I just could not bear anymore, even as entertainment. It was that bad. But, from what I read, I advise that the plot is pointless and unrealistically laid down. The characters, especially the main character and her love interest, are very poorly developed. What is developed of the main character is unlikeable. The book has the tone of someone who is talking (i.e. writing), not because she has something to say (she doesn't), but because she likes the sound of her own voice. Wolitzer does know how to string words together well, but there is nothing upon which to hang those words, which is insulting to the reader.
I knew before I read the book jacket that Wolitzer much teach creative writing. It is obvious from the content of the book that she considers herself a literary giant and thinks that impressive. She should stick with that, her "novel" is beyond disappointing. I'm sorry but the comparison to Wolitzer to Anne Tyler is laughable.

Small and sweet. No wasted words and filler talk, just great information in an easy to read format.

I rate this one as Awesome. It is in my top 5 on nutrition books.
The Food Doctor.......2000-03-25
I have a lot of nutrition and healing books, but I like this one the best. The layout of the book is very colorful, and easy to read. The authors are concise and knowledgeable, and they make using the book very easy. There isn't a lot of confusing data or medical terms either. Instead the authors state everything very simply, and make it easy to understand for the average Joe or Jane. There is a list of the top 100 foods, and I have found it very helpful when changing my diet. This book also has yummy and easy to prepare recipies, as well as sections on various ailments and what foods to eat to help remedy them. I found this book to be a great information source in getting healthy and fit.

Wonderful Book to Read!!!.......2006-02-04
How do I even start...I found this book to be informative, but also to be the laughter that I've needed for months. The author uses a lot of humor and reality based writing for her readers. I think having had a child previously I was able to relate to her sense humor while pregnant and through delivery. Even if you do not find this book to be informative enough for you, I can promise it will be the laughter that you have needed for many months. I tried reading on my breaks at work and would laugh so hard that I had to stop. I would then try to explain to someone why I am laughing and would laugh so hard while trying to explain that tears would just role down my cheek. Thank you Dr. Rachel Franklin for the real life reading.
Much better books for twins are out there!.......2005-11-15
I have read several twin pregnancy books, and this one is the least informative by far. The author focuses on her own pregnancy, while putting a little too much emphasis on her opinion that almost all twin pregnancies result in preterm labor and time spent in the NICU for the babies. Though there is a greater risk of preterm issues, they shouldn't be the focus. I just recommend other twin books and there are GREAT ones out there!
A MUST HAVE for this amazing news.......2005-10-24
Expecting for the first time and learning it was going to be twins, I was very anxious about what to expect and how a twin pregnancy would be different from a "normal" pregnancy. This book covers with humor and medical knowledge the reality of twins and what to do to prepare both mentally and physically. Many books are out there, but this quick read is a reference you will pick up again and again.
THANK YOU!!!.......2005-06-16
Finally -- a book about multiples pregnancy that doesn't make you wish you'd joined a convent! I bought this book the day my husband and I discovered that we were expecting twins; thus far, it's the only resource I've found that presents the joys and potential problems of multiples pregnancy with a positive outlook and an even-handed approach.
Medical information is plentiful (as you would expect), but this book is anything but clinical in it's presentation. Think of it as the "girlfriend's guide" to multiples pregnancy. Overall, it's an excellent resource for anyone expecting more than one, and a godsend for couples like my husband and me, who will be first-time parents.

Book Description
Like other best-selling pregnancy books, this
The Fearless Pregnancy shares first-person information from a new mom, but what sets it apart from the other books is that it also includes helpful advice from both a doctor and a midwife.
Chapters include:
1. The Fear Factor -- the pregnancy\fear connection (how fear has been introduced into pregnancy over the past 30 years or so), what is fear, how does it serve and disserve us, how does it influence our thinking and feeling, how fear changes our biochemistry and how this relates to pregnancy.
2. Fearless First Trimester -- fears around early miscarriage, when it's "safe" to tell people, pregnancy sickness, dealing with other people's fearful reactions, conquering fears that come up when you're just accepting the news, etc.
3. Fearless Testing -- how to navigate the various and many tests (blood tests, amnio, genetic testing, etc.) and understand the risk, benefits and how to put them in perspective.
4. Fearless Diet, Fitness and Weight Gain -- the truth about food -- how risky are certain "taboo" foods, how concerned do you need to be about your nutrition, how safe/unsafe is moderate alcohol. It'll also discuss common sense exercise precautions and how to handle fear of weight gain.
5. Fearless Living -- How to go about your expectant mom life with the least amount of pregnancy-related stress and fear.
Other topics include:
- Sickness and Health-- what to do when there's something wrong with you (cold, flu, skin problems, urinary tract infections or more serious stuff like strep or a broken bone)
- Sex
- Travel
- Beauty treatments
- Sleeping
6. Fearless Environment -- from environmental health concerns like plastic containers and cleaning solutions to noise and stress problems, this section will discuss what's risky and what's not and how to control your environment when possible.
7. Fearless Delivery Prep -- from birthing classes to the fear of the actual birth (entire books have been written on this) to how to take advice from other moms.
8. Fearless Gear Guide -- how to grapple with the stuff you really need to be safe and comfortable with a newborn, such as bassinets, disposable diapers, nursing pumps, etc.
9. Fear-fighting Exercisesmeditation, writing and discussion exercises specifically targeted to addressing and putting into perspective a variety of pregnancy fears.

A book of personal opinions, not facts.......2007-05-10
I bought this book because I am prone to anxiety and thought it might help alleviate some of my pregnancy fears. This book basically gives instructions for how to be one of those parents who puts themselves first. Some of the advice given by this book: eat all the sushi you want, feel free to drink wine, make sure you keep getting your fake nails done (no harm in breathing THOSE chemicals), but when asked whether a pregnant woman should go camping? Well, this book basically says, "Why would you want to?!" I'm not interested in this recipe for a marginal child.
A Must-Have Pregnancy Book.......2007-03-26
This wonderful easy-to-read and reassuring book should be on every new mother's reading list. Written by a doctor, a midwife, and a mom, it provides a common sense AND scientifically supported perspective on pregnancy.
Most women are already deeply aware of the risks of pregnancy. We seem to hear no shortage of horror stories about the dangers of everything from caffeine to cats. If you already own the What to Expect book or any of the other tried and trusted pregnancy books, this book will provide a wonderful companion to those informative but scare-inducing tomes.
This book won't try to convince you that there are no risks. But it will help you to put the ones that do exist in perspective, and also dispel the false risks. I bought it in the very early stages of pregnancy and am since sleeping more peacefully, feeling happier, and generally "keeping it real."
Response to Dissatisfied Consumer H. Gilbeau "Jubalie" (USA) .......2006-04-27
Reviewer H. Gilbeau "Jubalie" (USA) wrote a review of this book titled "Great disservice to women everywhere!" on January 1, 2006. In her review, she asserts that this book is a disservice to women based on the opinion that the fears allayed in this book are petty compared to her personal child loss experience. Ladies and gentlemen, this book wasn't written as a guide to personal loss recovery. This book was written to cover common health concerns and fears of the average pregnant woman.
H. Gilbeau states: "There are hundreds of moms that will panic and will continue to worry until they get to bring a baby home alive, not if they should pump gas or use a cell phone while pregnant." In reality, questions as to day-to-day health and exposure risks (pumping gas, cell phone usage, VDTs, diet, OTC medications, bathing, aches and pains, hormones/depression, second-hand smoke, undercooked meat, cat feces, etc) are very important. They are important not only to assuage stressed out paernts-to-be, but also the health of the baby. The authors of this book are not asserting in any way the loss of YOUR baby, Mrs. Gilbeau, is unimportant, but they are trying to use experience, statistics, and facts to alleviate the panic and fear often experienced along with the barage of DOs and DON'Ts in a modern day pregnancy.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a book on dealing with loss, perhaps you should look elsewhere. However, if you're looking for a book that attempts to relieve pregnancy fears by putting them into prospective, this may be a good choice.
On a personal note:
Mrs. Gilbeau further has the audacity to state: "When I sit in my OB's office after my loss, I listen to the petty concerns of pregnant women that have not experienced a loss. They complain about their backs, having to get up to use the bathroom all night, that their husband doesn't have the nursery done, what sex the baby will be, when their baby shower is, etc. I just want to scream that NOT ALL BABIES COME HOME,..."
I'm sorry, what did you say? "The petty concerns of pregnant women... complain about their backs, having to get up to use the bathroom all night,... what sex the baby will be..." Right, that was it. But the consumers and authors of this book are the insensitive ones? These people don't need you to take out the pain of your loss on them. It's not the fault of pregnant women everywhere that you lost your child, and an understanding person wouldn't seek to demean the concerns of other mothers and mothers-to-be based upon their own pain and insecurity.
My advice is that you seek INTENSIVE psychotherapy and attempt to stay away from ALL other people, especially unsuspecting pregnancy women who may be concerned about maintaining a healthy pregnancy (HOW DARE THEY?!) until you get a grip.
Clearly not for everyone... Perfect for us........2006-04-21
When it comes to my wife and her health, the words "neurotic" and "obsessive" come to mind. She gets on WebMD every time she has so much as a sniffle, and has convinced herself that she has everything from cancer to SARS to a brain tumor.
My wife and I found out we were pregnant for the first time just a few days ago. So, as soon as we were prepared to deal with it, we headed to the bookstore and found this title. Within the first three chapters, the authors had addressed fears ranging from the biggest general health issues, to the tests which are available and why you may or may not want them (answering the question for her, "I'm 34 years old, why won't they give me an amniocentesis?"), to how to tell a close friend who has been trying (hard) to get pregnant for some time that this "just sorta happened" for us. It's like the authors were inside her head.
Every parent should be fully aware of the risks involved in pregnancy. Bad things do happen, and we all know someone (or know someone who knows someone) to whom the worst possible things have happened. But many of us need the encouragement of someone authoritative who can remind us that these things are rare exceptions, and that there are some things you can control and some things you can't. "Instead of obsessing about your pregnancy," the authors remind us, "consider obsessing over parenting. That situation lasts longer, and the payoff for being prepared will likely be greater."
Many of the critics of this book seem to be response to the premise of the title. Of course there is no such thing as a "fearless pregnancy" -- if one were to read as far as the first page of the book, one would find that the authors agree:
"The key is that the fear must be valid, and it must be used properly -- to inquire, explore, and act wisely."
By no means do I believe that this book is intended to be a comprehensive reference. Perhaps the book's subtitle more accurately reflects its content: "Wisdom and Reassurance From a Doctor, a Midwife and a Mom."
It's perfect for us because this is our first pregnancy, and it will not be the only pregnancy book on our shelves. It is true that this book does not address the devastating realities for those families who have experienced loss or complication (but by no means does it attempt to diminish or dismiss these experiences, either). If you have previously experienced a difficult pregnancy or loss, this book will most likely not address your fears about getting pregnant again.
Nonetheless, for anyone simply trying to get a grip on what can be one of the scariest things to happen to you for the first time, we highly recommend this book.
Great for worriers!.......2006-04-01
This is my favorite pregnancy book that I've read so far--and I've read quite a few. So many of the other books frightened me with all the things that could go wrong, even though those things are very rare. There's so much fear-mongering in the media these days, and with other pregnancy books, that this book was a delight and a comfort!
Thanks to the authors for a great, comforting pregnancy companion.
