My children enjoyed me reading this story to them. The illustrations are beautiful. I had to explain some of the terms in a little more detail, but the story held their attention. It is nice when you find books that also actually introduce a "real" history of what it was like many years ago.

I read this book to my 4 year old granddaughter, who loves books and is beginning to read now. The book held her interest well, and I loved the illustrations! It was great to be reading her a book that had an actually story, instead of the standard children's books. She loved the story, and in fact, after we read it, she wanted to start playing out her own version of the story...."Grandma! Pretend that you find a belt buckle in the sand, and I appear as the ghost of the boy who was given it to." She really got into being on a ship back in the days of big sailing ships, and had so much fun with it!
I love Mary Higgins Clark's books for myself, and loved being able to read my granddaughter one of her books that was written for children. I hope she'll write more.

This excellent account of the true story of Owen and Mzee will delight any young reader. The beautiful pictures of the animals and the park are perfectly complemented by the easy-to-read text making this book a wonderful story-time resource. Though young readers may be saddened when Owen loses his mother, his adoption by Mzee will soothe any lingering concerns while teaching a powerful lesson about acceptance. This book would be an inspiring addition to any family library.

I bought this book for my four year old neice. It is a great story of friendship with the added bonus of being a true story. There are a lot of great photos in the book and my neice really enjoyed talking about the pictures and she added some details to the book just my commenting on what she could see in the pictures. I think this is a good purchase.

We purchased this book for our four-year-old avid book lover. While the book gives way to much info to keep a four-year-old's attention (unless they really love books), the photos are amazing and it is easy to shorten the relatable information until the child is old enough to appreciate it. Great book for reading/looking through just before going to a zoo.

We have enjoyed reading this book about the unusual friendship between an orphaned baby hippo and a crusty old tortoise.
The quality of the paper used and the large photo-illustrations are appealing.
The story is delightful and raises many questions, some of which are answered. It both invites the reader to marvel at the mysteries that exist in nature, and educates the reader a little about the animals concerned and conservation in general.

I can almost see this book as a movie or mini series. The characters are so funny and so likeable. I laughed out loud too many times to count. Pick up this book if you want a quick, quirky read full of unforgettable characters.
ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE READ THIS YEAR. AMAZING BIT OF WRITING!.......2007-09-09
When Paula Wall published her first novel, The Rock Garden, I read it and loved it and felt it was by far one of the best novels of that year. I was quite fearful that Ms. Wall was one of those one novel wonders and thought "what a shame." Fortunately my fears were for naught! With this second offering I truly feel the author out did even her first work, which I have said, is one of the best. This is good stuff here folks!
At first glance, the author could quite well be classified as a regional author as her novels take place in a specific geographical area. But, like Ferrol Sams (Run with the Horsemen, the first of his wonderful trilogy), Ms. Wall transcends geography and produces a work that most people, if not all people, can relate to. She is simply an excellent, gifted writer and a true master story teller. If, after reading the first five pages, your sides are not hurting from laughter, then something has to be wrong with your sense of humor. This lady is funny. Her one liners are beyond a doubt some of the best I've read in years.
This is a novel of the depression south. It is not a "romance" novel, a "bodice ripper" nor is it a "historical romance." It is the story of a small town in the south during the depression years. Yes, there is an element of romance woven into the story, fear not, but this simply in not what this work is about. The author hangs her story on two sisters, which are great characters, but are only a small part of the novel as a whole. We meet page after page of vivid characters. The author has a skill which allows her to, in one paragraph, convince the reader that they have known a character all of their life. The twists and turns of this story are absolutely amazing and complicated, yet not so complicated that it does not all make perfect sense as you read on. Even though the story and plot are wonderful, they are almost over shadowed by the author's keen sense of character development. In this work we have probably at least a dozen story lines going and they are all wonderfully interlinked as are the quirky characters sprinkled here and there. The ending of this work...well, you just have to read that yourself, but trust me, it is great. Like another reviewer here, I recommend you go ahead and buy this one as you will no doubt want to give it a reread. I cannot wait for her next work to come out!

Impossible To Put Down!.......2007-07-02
After reading 'The Rock Orchard' and LOVING it, I was so excited for the next Paula Wall book to come out! When my local library didn't have this available, I knew couldn't wait, so I went to the store and bought it! Well let me tell you, this book sure didn't disappoint! Two nights in a row I was up till 3am...I kept telling myself 'One more chapter, then I'll go to sleep, for REAL this time!'...and I couldn't do it :)
The Wilde women of Tennessee sure have a lot of fire in them, but the girls aside, this book is also about an entire town. I was surprised by how many characters were in this story, but I just couldn't wait to know more about each and every one of them! I highly recommend this book, and if you haven't read 'The Rock Orchard' yet, then make that the next book you read. Ms. Walls novels are just dripping with southern sensuality, good gossip, and irresistible characters. I only wish she wrote faster, cause I'm already looking forward to the next one!
Fun, Unputdownable, Witty Summer Read!.......2007-06-14
The old South is alive and well and kickin' in Paula Wall's books.
I wouldn't call her books historical romances....(that sounds so dry and boring) more like hilarious, witty novels of the South. When Pearl catches her little sister, Kat, with her legs up in the air and her fiance on board for the ride in the well house, she skips town and vows revenge, no matter the cost. Thus begins this witty, fascinating, fun novel. It's one of my favorite reads from my Summer reading list.
Pearl and Kat come from a long line of Wilde women who tend to be fiercely independent, beautiful, hard-headed and hot-blooded. Even though this book sounds like an old-fashioned `bodice-ripper' romance, it's not. Paula Wall is the undisputed queen of the one-liner and had me holding my sides from laughing so hard at the quips her characters uttered. I've never seen so many bitter, old hags who learned valuable life lessons from a creative, enterprising whore.
I loved the surprise ending which wrapped the story up perfectly. And when the old broad who tried so blatantly and creatively to kill her husband (being a widow was much preferred over being a wife for many women) got her comeuppance, I laughed so hard I had tears running down my face. The chicken house scenes are worth the price of the book, for sure!
I borrowed this book from the library, but plan to buy my own copy as soon as it comes out in paper. This is a fabulous Summer read with characters who you won't soon forget.

Third grader, Amber Brown, and Justin Daniels have been best friends ever since preschool. They always know what the other is thinking, have created a giant ball of chewed gum that is their prized possession, and have the perfect way to eat Oreo cookies - Amber eats the cream filling, and Justin eats the chocolate cookie shell. Having known each other forever has only worked to help them survive school. After all, they're constantly sticking up for one another when someone decides to tease them about their names - "Amber Brown is not a crayon," "Justin Time" - they help each other out with homework - Justin is the math brainiac, while Amber's strong-point is spelling and penmanship - and they sit next to each other for all class activities. Which is why they both have a hard time accepting the fact that Justin is moving. As a dynamic duo, the two can't imagine being separated. I originally read AMBER BROWN IS NOT A CRAYON when I was in the fourth grade, and instantly fell in love with Amber. Paula Danziger has a magical way of meshing the fun (best friends, school projects) with the serious (moving away), to create a splendid work of fiction that really appeals to young readers. Her ability to bring real-life situations to the forefront, and shine a spotlight on them is inspiring, and will obviously win a place in the heart of readers who are experiencing similar situations. Danziger manages to put various lessons into such a compact book, from conflict resolution, to feeling comfortable enough to reveal your true emotions. Amber is a lovable character, whose sloppy, messy ways make her unique, and easy to relate to; while her friendship with Justin really illustrates just how strong the bond can be between children - even those as young as the two characters in this book. Justin, on the other hand, also brings a diversity to the story, and helps to highlight both his, and Amber's quirks. The two characters play off of one another marvelously, and truly bring their own unique voices to the tale. Step in to the feisty world of Amber Brown and friends!

I like the story Amber Brown is not a crayon. The best character was Amber Brown. I like Amber Brown because she is funny. The story was good because Amber was nice. I also liked the story because it was funny. I think you should read this story because it shows how to get back together when you breakup and be friends.

We are fans of the Amber Brown series which gives an Amber's-eye-view of life in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade. Since we've just moved continents, the theme of this one, in which Amber's best friend Justin moves away, was particularly revelant and interesting. The writing and language are accessible and familiar. 3rd grade reading level.

Woven throughout this memoir is her personal story of coming out as a lesbian and sharing her life for 20 years with her partner.
The book starts in Brazil covering the struggle of becoming an engineer despite society's limited ideas about what girls could achieve. Hitting the glass ceiling at age 23, she immigrates to America, works as a cleaning woman to survive until obtaining papers to work as an engineer.
Eventually her idea became the nucleus of Expedia when her disillusion with Microsoft makes her leave in 1998, as a millionaire.

This book touched my heart as soon as I read the first chapter.
It's easy to read with excellent continuity. Being in the IT field, I loved how it chronicled the technology. I also loved how it told the truth about the difficulty breaking the glass ceiling even when you're the smartest kid on the block.
This book is honest, moving, and triumphant. I can relate to all of Soraya's emotions - our circumstances may have been different, but the emotions are very much the same. I'm recommending it to all my friends.

I couldn't put book this down and as a rersult I read it until the wee hours. This wonderful book made me laugh and cry and left me longing for more.
Soraya overcame the imposed limitations of growing up in Brazil's male dominated society . She launched the first satellite in Brazil and became a famous Engineer. She came to America where she started all over by washing dishes. Soraya went to create and orchestrate one of the most successful websites for Microsoft.
Soraya is a brilliant visionary with a pioneers sense of adventure.
I wish there were more books of this caliber. I hope that Soraya continues to write more books.

I read a lot and it is rare that I find a book like this one. The story is engaging, easy to read, and really encouraging! It made me think on the many things I did not do for lack of courage and now I fell like I need to focus on those goals and just do them. If you are looking for a good read, read this one. It shows how is important to fight for what you beleive in!
