5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......2006-07-15

I'm not one for exaggeration, but it is safe to say that I owe any future success in my relationships to God through His work in this book. It helped me to clearly see how to be the man that God wants me to be, and that Christian women really find attractive; it gave me tips on the kind of woman to avoid, and it just help to set me upon the right road in knowing God for myself and trusting Him to lead my search for the right woman. I have been passing this book and this author on to all of my friends whenever relationship topics are mentioned, and I recommend her work wholeheartedly. God has given her an anointing and you will NOT be sorry you brought this book, whether you are a single guy or a single girl.

The companion book for single women is virtually similar to this one; if you have the one, there is no need to purchase the other. I would suggest that you buy the one for your sex, even though they can both be appreciated by everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read for any Man of God.......2006-01-23

I purchased this book after being dumped by my woman friend of over 1 and 1/2 years. Ms. McKinney Hammond helped me understand God has a purpose-fulness for what happens to us whether we recognize it or not. I was so impressed by the writing that I've purchased the "Proverbs 31" book and am reading the "What Becomes of the Broken-Hearted". Outstanding author for men as well as women. I would hope Ms. McKinney Hammond writes more books for us brothers who want a committed, faith filled relationship with a Sister!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for MEN to read.......2005-12-31

I purchased this book for a male friend of mine who is a youth minister and has problems selecting the correct ladies to date. So anyway I anonymously dropped this book off on his car windshield. (LOL i know it is funny) This book is such a blessing to so many men that have already read it. I personally read it, the day I bought it, just so I could give this gift to my friend. I really do hope it helped him. It is filled with tips to detecting if the lady you are dating or thinking about dating is genuine or fake etc. It encourages our men to be attracted to inner beauty as well as outer beauty. That is what I loved so much about this book.

5 out of 5 stars A sistah for the mistahs!.......2005-04-03

When I was in seminary a couple years ago, my counseling teacher had to spend an extra day on marriage and relationships. This was due to the poor results on a relational test she administered to the class. She said that as Generations X and Y have grown up and entered seminary, the scores have gotten progressively worse! Issues such as codependence, self-centeredness, and self-protection have become much more prevalent in the last decade or so. Men are more passive, and women harbor father issues that taint their relations with men. With all this relational baggage, I wonder how Christian singles manage to get married, let alone remain that way.

Perhaps that's why there are so many Christian singles books on the market. Christian men and women are clamoring for ways to create as much certainty as possible in the most uncertain of things: romantic relationships. "Finding the Right Woman for You: One Woman's Advice to Men" is yet another entry into this crowded Christian genre. However, this is one of the few books for men that's written by a woman. As I can attest, guys tend to be somewhat clueless about what makes women tick. Michelle Hammond, a prolific writer on singleness, provides sisterly advice for men seeking a mate. She has opened a window into femininity and revealed what's going on in a woman's heart. I appreciated her insights into what women of character are looking for in a man. I was also encouraged by the candor she displayed about her own struggles as a single.

Ms. Hammond uses the Old Testament book of Ruth to illustrate what men need to know about women and how to woo them. For example, a man should look for a woman who demonstrates Ruth's "Five C's": Clear, Caring, Committed, Consistent, and Complete. Boaz is held up as a character example for men to emulate so they are worthy of a woman like Ruth. Supplementing each chapter are sections titled "The Facts on Women," with bullet points that reveal a woman's inner workings, desires, fears, motivations, and expectations when it comes to men. In addition, there are challenging "Consider This" questions, such as "How are you preparing yourself for marriage?" and "How will you be a blessing to a woman?" A running theme throughout this book is that men need to exemplify Proverbs 1-30 to deserve a Proverbs 31 woman.

Certain women may be upset that Ms. Hammond has given away their "secrets" and exposed them to potential manipulation by a wolf in sheep's clothing. Yes, Ms. Hammond does reveal the vulnerabilities of a woman's heart. But males should be good stewards of this knowledge and "play the man," treating women as "sisters and mothers" instead of objects and hormonal outlets. "Finding the Right Woman for You" is welcome advice to Christian men from a sistah who is for the mistahs.

5 out of 5 stars In the beginning God.......2007-06-10

This book tells it like it was. Because creation was finished on the 7th day, we can't know how, but we can see and study the results. It explains why the "very good" earth that God created is less than that now. Sin entered the world and death by sin. Fortunately our God is a compassionate God and provided an escape for us in Jesus Christ just as he provided an escape for Noah and his family before the Flood for a new beginning. Even then man rebelled and God gave them new languages and when people groups couldn't understand each other they separated and filled the earth as God had commanded after the Flood.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!.......2007-05-16

"Genesis: Finding Our Roots" provides an excellent overview of Sumerian culture, mythology, and linguistics with an emphasis on astronomy and biblical compatibility.

Dr. Beechick's research is top notch and fully documented. She demonstrates the absurdity of the word 'pre-historic' by showing that the origin accounts in the Bible DO pre-date those of ancient Sumer and Babylon.

A must read for anyone who is interested in accuracy and readability in the studies of ancient man.

As to David Moore's ignorant attack of Dr. Beechick's YEC credentials:

It's great to see someone defend YEC, but it is pathetic to witness someone bash a staunch scholar like Ruth Beechick.

Obviously, David Moore runs around amazon, cutting and pasting his diatribe wherever he suspects heresy, with no thought of reviewing something he actually read or caring about whom he is attacking.

Dr. Beechick warrants a great deal more respect as she corrects evolutionary time-lines (like datings of Egyptian Pharoahs) to conform to the more Biblically (and archeologically) accurate dates.

David Moore needs to read a little more and broadcast his ignorance a little less.

5 out of 5 stars This book promotes a literal 6 day creation.......2007-05-16

The reviewer below is very incorrect in his assessment! If you don't believe me, check out Ken Ham's "Answers in Genesis" website, where he promotes Ruth Beechick's "Finding our Roots."

Answers in Genesis is in support of the literal "6 day creation" belief, and so is Ruth Beechick. Ruth Beechick is not a theistic evolutionist. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

This is an excellent resource, Ruth Beechick is an excellent writer. Simple yet profound. I gained much from this book, and great resource for homeschoolers or anyone wanting to learn the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Karen from Fl.......2007-02-26

This is a great book. It shows you how to calculate your own time line for different events in the bible. I love the part about Noah and his family. I never realized they were on the ark a little over 1 year. I always thought it was 40 days. I was very wrong. This is a great book and can also be read to children.

1 out of 5 stars The true agenda : evolution not creation.......2007-02-14

Now listen to what the culture around us is trying to conform us to:

Theistic evolution is an attempt to accommodate God's Word to man's ideas. The theistic evolutionist says that God's method of creation was evolution, that He didn't create the world in six literal days but took millions, perhaps billions, of years to accomplish the feat.

To suggest that God relied on chance and time to create the universe is not only insulting to God's power, it makes Him a liar by contradicting His inspired written account of creation. To satisfy the theistic evolutionist, the first few chapters of Genesis would have to be rewritten. Ruth Beechick(4) suggests the ridiculous results below.

1. In the beginning God created masses of interstellar gas and dust, and after billions of years there
were formed from these masses many solar systems and in one a planet, Earth.

2. Now this planet was without form and covered with waters.

3. And God said, Let the process of orogenesis work in the earth. After a sufficient time had elapsed the waters were gathered together and dry land appeared: and it was so.

4. And God called the dry land earth; and the gathering together of the waters called He seas: and God saw that it was good.

5. And God said, Let elements in the waters come together in chance formations. And a chain of highly improbable chances brought together a true protoplasm. God called the protoplasm life.

6. And God said to the living protoplasm, keep making more protoplasm and form into cells of different kinds, and ever better and more complex groupings so you can evolve into many kinds of water creatures. And let some of the fish bring forth wings. And after millions of years God saw that it was good.

7. And God blessed them, saying, be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

8. And God had also said, let some of the fish begin to crawl on the earth, and let every creature bring forth some other kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth, each after some other kind: and it was so.

9. And when the living creatures could not evolve into all the kinds God wanted, then God made some more creatures from time to time. These creatures also made new kinds upon the earth: and God saw that it was good.'

10. And God said to the primate kind, Stand upright and begin to use tools. This will develop your brain and you can have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

11. And after many generations the upright primate could do all the things God told him to do. God called him Man, and Man was the image of Him.

12. And God blessed Man and said, Be fruitful, and subdue the earth. I have given you everything in it.

13. And God saw every thing that He had made, and behold it was very good. And millions and billions of years had passed.

14. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

15. And after God ended His work which He had made, God rested on one day from all His work which He had made.

16. And God blessed that one day, and sanctified it: because in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.

17. Therefore, remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

18. Many years shalt thou labor and do all thy work:

19. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work.

20. For in millions and billions of years the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested one day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

Some of the ancient manuscripts omit this verse.

DO YOU REALLY WANT THIS WOMEN TO TEACH YOUR KIDS???

Can we really take the liberty to alter the very Word of God like that? If we do so in Genesis 1-2 where else can we make it suit the current scientific, moral, cultural drift away from God?

In other words, no book of the Scriptures matters more because EVERY BOOK OF THE BIBLE RESTS ON THIS ONE! The book of Genesis is the foundation for the doctrines that follow.

Everything you base your eternal destiny upon starts in Genesis:

A. INSPIRATION: The Creator in Genesis WROTE the Scriptures! Hebrews 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by [ His] Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (NKJV)

B. DEITY OF CHRIST: The Creator in Genesis is the One who DIED for you and me! Hebrews 1:3 who being the brightness of [His] glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, (NKJV) John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (NKJV)

C. FINAL JUDGMENT: The CREATOR in Genesis is the ONE we will all someday face to enter Heaven or Hell! Acts 17:24, 31 "God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. 31 "because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead." (NKJV)

D. SALVATION: The CREATOR of Genesis is the ONLY ONE who can die in your place on the Cross! Romans 5:12-15 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned -- 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift [is] not like the offense. For if by the one man's offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. (NKJV)

E. TRUSTWORTHINESS OF CHRIST: The CREATOR in Genesis is the ONLY ONE who knows what happened at that event! Mark 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation, God 'made them male and female.(NKJV)

F. THE WHOLE MESSAGE OF THE BIBLE: The CREATOR in Genesis is the ONLY ONE able to send a message like we have in the SCRIPTURES! Colossians 1:15-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. (NKJV)

All attempts to compromise the Scriptures should be resisted. There are some popular views some Christians hold that are very dangerous:
a. Evolution is the Satanic religion of the Fall, Cain, Babel, idolatry, paganism, humanism and all
other evils. Even the Darwinism of Evolution has been proven in a legal setting to be devoid of
scientific support. As Dr. Phillip Johnson says in his book Darwinism on Trial, "at every step I, what
I found was a failure of the evidence to be in accord with the theory. . . the fossil record is
something the Darwinists must explain away because it records sudden appearance of
organisms that exhibit no trace of step-by-step development from earlier forms. And once these
organisms exist, they remain fundamentally unchanged . . . " (5)
b. Gap Theory destroys Adam's original sin. Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin
entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned --
(NKJV) It puts him at the head of a creation that sits atop a multi-billion year old graveyard of
fossils. This monument to sin, death and destruction before Adam is incongruous to the Word of God.
c. Age Day Theory destroys the reliability of the text. It is repeatedly stated and believed by the
Scripture writers that the account of Gen. 1 is true. The Age Day Theory states the sun had to come before the fourth epoch. So the Scriptures can't be trusted.

So what should we trust about the CREATOR we meet in the book of Genesis?

1. LISTEN TO YOUR CREATOR

Gen. 1 is His account and He says He did it in six literal, solar, calendar days! "evening and morning" is a designation for a rotation of the Earth, a solar, 24-hour day. In fact the word used in Genesis 1-2 for day is always used for a literal day
The word "day" (Hebrew yom) can have a variety of meanings. A solar day, daylight, indefinite period of time.
Occurring 2291 times in the Old Testament, it almost always means a literal day.
When used in the plural form yamim (845 times), it always refers to a literal day.
When modified by numeral or ordinal in historical narrative (359 times in the Old Testament outside of Genesis 1); it always means a literal day.
When modified by "evening and/or morning" (38 times outside of Genesis 1) it always means a literal day.
Context of Genesis 1 is a tight chronology.
Forms basis for our workweek of 6 literal days (Exodus 20:11).
Proper interpretation is a solar day, not an indefinite time period.
Gen. 2 is His origin of man and woman is the account of Adam and Eve, and it was instantaneous creation!
Exodus 20 was actually inscribed by the very finger of God into stone. What do the only words that God actually wrote on an object say? Exodus 20:9-11 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day [is] the Sabbath of the LORD your God. [In it] you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who [is] within your gates. 11 For [in] six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that [is] in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (NKJV) is His explanation of the timing and it is six solar days!
Mark 10 is His placement of mankind in relation to the universe! Mark 10:6 "But from the beginning of the creation, God 'made them male and female.' (NKJV)
2. TRUST YOUR CREATOR

Hebrews 1:10 And: You, LORD, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands. (NKJV) Hebrews 11:3-6 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible. But without faith [it is] impossible to please [Him,] for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and [that] He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (NKJV

Book Description

Ruthie Hammond had a dream.  After high school she was moving to a big city...anywhere but Brewster.  Surely God had a plan for her, and it wasn’t in this small, nowhere town.

Twenty years later she’s back in Brewster working at a failing radio station with her boyfriend Jack.  She’s given up on God and if she wants to get out of town, she’ll have to do it solo. But when her first love, Paul, moves back, Ruthie wonders if happiness really does lie beyond this podunk town.

In this second novel in the Coming Home to Brewster series, Roxanne Henke offers another wonderful story about relationships, choices, and spiritual growth.

5 out of 5 stars Another by Henke................YIPEEEE!.......2005-02-11

I am a very avid women's fiction reader and I had
never read inspirational fiction before last week.
When a friend actually introduced me to Roxanne Henke.
I have already finished "After Anne" and am now finishing
"Finding Ruth". It seems I can relate to everyone of
the characters at some time or another. I adore Henke's
first person writing style so much. I think In the
last week I have introduced this fabulous series to AT LEAST 15 of my friends. I lost my Dad 5 years ago (when I was 29) to colon
cancer and Henke's vivid description of Anne and her struggles
are so true. Her feelings were my Dad's feelings. Now I see myself in Ruthie (in "Finding Ruth") as a very successful yet scared woman in a small town. Is it fear or comfort, I am not sure? What I am sure of is that this author has given me some peace at the end of my busy days and
for that I thank her. Bravo to Roxanne Henke and the little town of Brewster, North Dakkota!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Finding a Great Book.......2004-10-01

Henke's first book, After Anne, was an all time great. I couldn't wait to read her next book, Finding Ruth. I love Henke's writing style. She pulls you into the story and makes it easy to identify with the characters. Sometimes it's hard to find a really good book, but when you do, it's so much fun. You'll never be disappointed with Henke. Her books are the best I've read.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book!.......2004-05-25

This book is about a woman, Ruth, who is dying to pursue her dream of leaving her small town. But she is bound by a radio
station that is about to go under. She is also confronted by her past in the form of her ex-boyfriend, Paul.

The book was a very well-written and enjoyable book. I really liked the "be content wherever you are" theme. I think that
we can all learn something from that verse in the Bible. The book also did a great job with the development of the
characters, and explaining the past history with Ruth and Paul.
And the stress that Ruthie felt in keeping her radio station afloat came out so good.

This is the first book by Henke that I have read. I look forward to reading more of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Great books with a message........2003-03-13

Roxanne Henkes' books are very good and very hard to put down. She has the gift of telling her story from different view points, and I like this style a lot. Living in a small town in North Dakota made the book Finding Ruth even more of a delight for me to read. Besides being entertained by Roxanne's books, she includes insights that make one think about their own life. Keep the books coming Roxanne! They are definitely winners!

5 out of 5 stars Another winner!.......2003-01-26

Henke's compelling first book, After Anne, was such a page-turner that I wondered if she could possibly repeat her success. In Finding Ruth, the reader has all the components for a delightful read: fast-paced story, believeable characters, interesting dialogue, heart-wrenching moments, touching romance, and plenty of take-away. I couldn't put it down.

Ruthie struggles with years of unfulfilled dreams that sour her view of small town Brewster. Tough circumstances early in life are part of the problem, years of bad decisions don't help. When Paul, her highschool sweetheart, returns to town, Ruthie's life takes a new twist.

Roxanne Henke has the wonderful ability to engage the reader as if one is sitting across the kitchen table listening to "girl-talk." When I open her books, I feel like she is saying, "Now let me tell you about Ruthie!" And I pull up my chair, pour myself a cup of tea, and listen.

Precious Solitude, an intimate little book for women, begins with a letter to its readers from the author, personally inviting us to "go within"; granting us the permission we need to seek sanctuary from a world that is crushing with the pressures of responsibility. Therapist and retreat and workshop leader Ruth Fishel explores the concept of being alone and helps the reader consider the many obstacles--real and imagined--to gaining the stress-reducing peace of mind found in simple solitude. Concepts such as esteem, patience, happiness, and mindfulness are interlaced with inspirational quotes and affirmations--Fishel welcomes us into the shelter of our own souls with a variety of simple techniques for just being there. The particularly attractive typographical design of this trade paperback makes it a pleasure to gaze upon, and the short (often only one page) chapters make for a stress-reducing read moments before retiring, or at any time of day when a quick break makes all the difference in the world. --Randall Cohan

        5 out of 5 stars Precious Solitude.......1999-12-29

A book with an inviting title that delivers what it promises. Precious Solitude is a perfect retreat companion, but provides an extensive menu of ideas for how to relax, refuel, and rejuvenate even with our everyday lives swirling madly around us. Adopt just a handful of suggestions from Ruth Fishel's latest and relearn the meaning of the word "calm." You'll be glad you did -- and honestly, so will those around you. Incidentally, if you're tempted to dismiss the notion of solitude as an unimaginable luxury, then you need this book even more than most of us!

5 out of 5 stars Finding our True Selves..........1999-12-09

This is one book that you will keep by your bedside, carry with you to the beach or to the office. In these stressful times being alone is often suspect, considered, somehow, a failure. Ruth Fishel gently takes us through our days, our fears and our longings and offers a means, through solitude, to find our true Selves. "Precious Solitudes" is a loving companion, reminding us daily that we are precious and our time alone is precious.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to use solitude as a tool for personal growth........1999-09-26

I've always had a problem with being quiet and alone with my thoughts. Ruth book includes the thoughts and feelings of a diverse background of people toward the subject of solitude. I found that I'm not alone! Precious Solitude frees the reader to transform any negative feelings toward solitude to something positive and productive.

I found a personal message in the chapter titled "Walking". I'm working on loosing weight and my doctor told me I have to walk 1-hour a day. No skipping - no excuses! I've been ignoring his directive for two weeks now. I just couldn't find anything productive about walking alone an hour each day. I've put all of my energy into not doing it and complaining about how hard it's going to be. "Walking" changed my perspective on the entire situation. Now I'm looking forward to my 1-hour walks. I'll have time to myself to think, plan, enjoy nature, get centered, focused and loose weight! I learned that solitude can be a very productive time!

Precious Solitude is written in small vignettes and is very easy to read. Excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars A great book to remind yourself how important you are.......1999-09-07

If you have been looking for a book to make you feel good about being good to yourself, this is the one to read.

Enjoyable, inspiring and easy reading for those of us who put "us" off.

            Book Description

"I went out full and the Lord hath brought me home empty again." —Ruth 1:21a

As in Naomi's case in the Bible's book of Ruth, today there will likely be times when every believer arrives at a desolate place in the heart, truly crushed in spirit for whatever reason. Finding Fullness Again by Pastor Ralph Douglas West takes an encouraging look at the story of Naomi and Ruth to remind readers that they too can keep pressing forward—not just running on empty—despite the weight of their cares.

With God all things are possible, even a brand new start in life. "Let the old things pass away," Douglas says. "Let everything that God wants for you become new."

4 out of 5 stars Great to Share with Others .......2006-07-09

This book begins with wonderful illustrations and you find yourself a part of the story of Ruth whether you have read the story before or for the first time. The idea that God provides us with an opportunity to start over again is resounded throughout the pages of the book.
The book covered some touchy issues, but did not leave anyone out who should, needs to, wants to start over again! It dealt with the heart of issues that so many people face. I can't think of a group that was left out! Share this with someone who needs to see the story of Ruth in this light.
            What a refreshing read!

5 out of 5 stars A book to enjoy in all seasons .......2006-07-06

Such a fabulous book for Bible readers and future Bible readers! If you don't find yourself in the first category, you will find yourself in the latter before finishing "Finding Fullness Again".

Whether we consider ourselves on an upswing or downswing in life, we will find ourselves throughout the pages of "Finding Fullness Again". I found myself smiling and at the same time reflecting while enjoying "Finding Fullness Again".

"Finding Fullness Again" encouraged me to appreciate the words God uses to lift the lives of our relatives from the pages.

"Finding Fullness Again" encourages me again and again not only to know it is okay to start over again and again, but to appreciate the new starts. It also encourages me to help others who are starting fresh again. God lets us start over again and again each time we confess and He forgives us. He grants us new mercies each day. That speaks volumes about the value of starting over again and again AND again. We couldn't have a better example!

            Thank you Ralph Douglas West!!!
