Amazon.com Reviews

Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone."

Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

Book Description

This new edition contains the basic diet and is enhanced by new explanations of the underlying theories. There are seven new chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Big Help.......2007-10-08

This diet has improved the quality of my life more than I can describe. I had gained nearly 50 pounds after two consecutive pregnancies, and couldn't seem to lose it no matter what diet I tried. This one helped me drop 14 in just the first 2 weeks. I'm now almost half way there at 25 lost, and thrilled. I eat more veggies than ever before, and drink more water and exercise too, so its really healthy.

5 out of 5 stars Worth Reading.......2007-09-24

Is there anyone who has had such a positive impact on American's ability to lose weight as Dr. Atkins? The science has, in fact, caught up with Atkins' assertions that sugar and excess carbohydrates are deadly. For a person who wants to know if they should take this book seriously, simply read through the success stories and testimonials here on Amazon! They really say it all. I think this book is worth reading, and if you need a bit of inspiration and some additional pointers for life long success, get The 3:00 PM Secret: Live Slim and Strong Live Your Dreams as a companion to Atkins! You won't regret reading these books!

5 out of 5 stars best diet ever........2007-09-15

NORA LUKAN :This is the most amazing diet i have ever been on. dr atkins is a saint. I have learned more about nutrition from this single book than I have from the other 20 diets I have already tried. This book teaches you facts that most nutritionists will only get to in 10 years from now. it is so progressive. thanks for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Saved My Life!!!!!!!.......2007-08-18

When I started the my new (Atkins Lifestyle)I was 5'2",375#. I had high blood pressure, bad Cholesterol levels, type II diabetes, congestive heart failure, and edema of the lower legs and feet. Doctors at Shane's hospital gave me 24 months to live if I did not lose at least 100#. That was 4 years, and 185# ago! I still need a little BP medication, but ALL other problems are gone. My doctor has been checking my Kidneys, and Liver functions for the last 3 1/2 years, and NO problems.

I am not suggesting you use this Lifestyle, just that it saved my Life!

1 out of 5 stars Worse than worthless.......2007-07-30

Mindless garbage for people completely uninformed about nutrion and content to stay that way. Ignorance is NOT bliss. Thankfully few can stay on this deadly diet for very long. If they could, society would ultimately have to foot the bill for the millions of cancer cases that would result. It's bad enough diabetes is going to cost the US billions. Why are people so willing to try everything EXCEPT healthy, natural eating?????!!!

Also it is a diet that is completely unsustainable ecologically. If this diet were to be adopted by the masses and meat/dairy consumption were to increase accordingly, we simply would not have enough farmland to raise all the cattle/poultry. Also the amount of fossil fuel wasted producing that much meat would be devastating. Let's not forget the massive amounts of pestcides, antibiotics and chemical fertilizers required to farm that much livestock, above and beyond what is already being used.

The dead author implies that this is a natural way of eating yet the diet requires you to suppliment vitamins, minerals, fiber etc. That doesn't sound very natural to me. A child could see that the diet is completely lacking many components of a healthy human diet.

1 out of 5 stars To Good To Be True.......2005-02-17

The Adkins diet works because decreasing your carb intake decreases your calorie intake and it also works by your body loosing significant fluids secondary to increased urine excretions of ketones (from fat burning) and nitrogen (from use of protein for energy rather than the body's first choice of glucose from carbs).

Problems related to this diet include:

* increased protein diets heavily burden the kidneys to excrete exessive amounts of nitrogen which has been shown to lead to loss of renal (kidney) function with aging.

*Inadequate carb intake compromises glycogen storage in liver and muscles (the body's 1st choice for energy source) risking fatigue and poor performance

*Protein in excess of need is used for energy (but if you are fatigued from lack of carbs you wont use the energy), the other protein is converted to fat, and its a well known health risk to have an increased body fat %

* Also, high protein is associated with increased urinary excretion of calcium, and may therefore contribute to osteoporosis.

* High intake of animal proteins are linked to atherosclerosis (related to saturated fat and cholesterol content) and to colon and prostate cancers.

Honestly this diet is not healthy for you at all. Eating a well balanced diet and regularly getting excercise will help you stay healthy and can remove you from the burden and cost that all of these fad diets offer. No matter how Mr. Adkins died doesn't matter... what matters is that you have a choice to make good decisions about your health and realize that sometimes these fad diets are too good to be true and we could be putting ourselves at risk by believing they are the answer to our problems.

5 out of 5 stars 50 lbs Lost, Off Insulin, Feel Great!.......2004-10-28

1. To start with, I am a Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse and "binky"'s comments were absolutely right about Atkin's death.....and the explanation of the fluid gain

2. I have been diabetic over 20 yrs, much of that time on insulin. Some yrs ago, I noticed that if I had a meeting at work that required my attention, I would skip meals. I was sluggish, tired all the time, massive yeast infections, and so many other problems. I told my mother that I thought food was killing me....I felt so much better without food! But it was the sneaky lil carbs making me so sick!

How excited I was to discover Dr. Atkins! So now after 7 yrs on Atkins, I maintain my weight with 20 gms carbs or less a day and I no longer crave carbs. I quit buying big bags of potatoes and loaves of bread! His Revolution and this diet book helped the most. I have adapted some of the recipes in the book to suit my taste.

My doctor will tell me the usual AMA garbage about this diet and then compliments me on all the progress! Hmmmmm. In the hospital, an 1800 ADA diet includes 5 starches a day and small amt of protein! Yuck! Boy, you should have seen the hospital dietician when my doctor let me be on a modified Atkins while hospitalized!
Hope this helps ya'll out there!

4 out of 5 stars The TRUTH about Dr. Atkins death.......2004-06-02

It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts:
* He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet.
* He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight.
* His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weight 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma.
* His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs.
* The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death.
* A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine."
* The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.

Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire? Keep an open mind and read the book.

As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system. The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book! Sheesh.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money and go to the Web site.......2004-02-17

I bought this cookbook before looking at the Atkins Web site. Big mistake. You can find these recipes, and in some cases updates of them, for free on the Web site. You can also find lots of low-carb recipes by searching with Google. This book also could have used the assistance of an experienced cookbook editor.

3 out of 5 stars good info...not so great recipes.......2003-10-27

I have been on the atkins diet for four months and have lost 56 pounds (and still going), so I can attest to the fact that this diet does work. I have never felt better or more energetic in my life.

The first part of this book talks about the basics of the diet. That's where the three stars came from. The second part of the book is the recipe section. No stars for it. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that I cannot find in normal grocery stores. It's really quite frustrating. Unless you live in an area with several health food stores, which I do not, I would recommend trying to find a different cook book with more practical recipes or coming up with your own.

Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution; the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isn't of much use by itself.

5 out of 5 stars A Handy Tool for Monitoring Net Carb Intake.......2007-08-30

This pocket-size book gives basic nutritional information, including total carbs and net carbs, on hundreds of foods. Most products round the number of grams of fiber to the closest whole number (or the closest higher whole number) on their labels, but Atkins lists fractional totals of grams of net carbs and fiber. There is also a modestly-sized listing of common fast foods.

In his section on vegetables, Atkins touts the value of cruciferous vegetables, garlic, etc. (p. 84). This alone should refute the silly myth of the Atkins diet being an all-meat diet. Atkins also includes a listing of "forbidden" high glycemic-impact foods. These should be enjoyed only occasionally, in very small portions, and then only by people on Lifetime Maintenance.

Portion size is important in weight control. But many conventionally-listed portions (e. g., in oz) are hard to visualize, and recommended portions are often much smaller than most people realize. For this reason, Dr. Atkins provides visual references (pp. 19-20). For example, a 3 oz serving of meat would be the size of a small pack of cigarettes.

5 out of 5 stars Counting carbs and fats.......2007-03-26

An indispensable quide for all those following the Atkins diet or anyone else wanting to count carbs and fats.

5 out of 5 stars Pocket book for the supermarket.......2005-10-21

This purse-size book is indespensible! It lists total carbs, fiber, net carbs, protein, fat, and calories to help you make the best choices, or even endulge a little while knowing how much you are doing so!

My copy is dog-eared and I carry it everywhere with me. When I think I might want something (like grapes, for example), I can look them up in the booklet right there in the supermarket and decide if they will fit into my diet plan or not. (The grapes were too high in carbs, in case you were wondering.)

The book also lists many common and name brand items, both high and low carb.

It is split into several sections such as beverages; milk, cream, butter, and yogurt; breads, muffins and crackers; fruit; pancakes, waffles, and breakfast pastries; poultry; sweeteners, jams, and syrups; etc.

It even has a section for "dining out" with tips on dining away from home, and a "fast food" section with counts for popular foods at fast food restaurants.

If you are watching either your fat or your carbs, you need this book!

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!.......2005-08-16

I was very pleased with this book! It made counting daily carbs and sticking to the Atkins' diet plan a lot easier. It also showed you how to eat real food, not just diet food, as well as restaurant and fast food. I would highly recommend this book to anyone counting carbs!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A LIFESTYLE CHANGE! THE ONLY "DIET" THAT WORKS!.......2007-08-28

In the past several years, I tried low fat diets and low calorie diet of about 1100 calories per day. Yes, I lost weight, but in a few months, gained it back and even more pounds to boot! Also, to me, these low fat and low calorie diets are hard to follow because you stay hungry and feel deprived all the time, hence, you go off them and gain the lost weight plus some. This is my second go around on this diet (in several years time) and I already lost some weight and feeling much better. And yes, I am an avid believer of the Dr Atkins low carb diet, I bought the newer cookbook for Atkins with his wife Veronica Atkins and because of this, I am able to STAY with the LOW CARB (Under 20 carbs a day) with no problem. I find I do have a lot of energy and I am losing weight very successfully with the Atkins Diet. I am still losing a lot of weight and am so pleased. In addition, I am making myself 2 low carb Whey Protein shakes per day (only 3 carbs per scoop and 25 grams of protien per serving) and this helps me with my continued weight loss. Also, I am walking each day for 25 minutes a day and doing light weight training for 10 minutes per day with 5 pound weights on each side. Hence I have already lost 4-5 pounds of fat loss per week, and I have gained more muscle mass. Another suggested book is Protien Power by Michael R. Eades and Mary Dan Eades, who are from my home state, Arkansas. (I just bought this book due to high reviews on Amazon). And, also, another great book is Drs. Eades newer book 30 Days of Low Carb by them also. Of course, my favoite low carb book is this one by the late and great Dr. Atkins. Hope my story helps you in your quest for weight loss and a healthy life style.

Please disregard the naysayers and try this plan. It works and the best thing is your not starving in the process. Throw away the refined garbage in your cupboards and eat real food. This isn't a diet, this is a lifestyle change.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting as history.......2006-01-04

After the publication of "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution," this older version seems to have been neglected. Mostly this is good because while it's a great book and I enjoyed reading it, Dr. Atkins' understanding of things has come a long way since he wrote it.

For example, the old version recommends almost zero carbohydrates and doesn't take fiber into account. The new book recommends no less than 20g of net carbohydrates, and fiber can be subtracted from the total count for any food since it doesn't raise blood sugar.

In the old version, the first phase was simply called "Phase 1" and lasted only one week; now it is called "Induction" and lasts 2 weeks. Since it includes more carbs, it can be adhered to for up to six months.

Dr. Atkins puts a big emphasis on ketone strips. The new program includes using them, but downplays them. Many people - like me - have trouble getting even light pink on our best days. I think downplaying, while still leaving the option there, is the best thing to do.

Other differences just have to do with the passage of time. 30 years ago Splenda wasn't on the market, so there is no mention of it. Same with cyclomates. Who today has heard of this sweetener? And the cure for constipation then was a mild laxative. Nowadays fiber supplements are on the market and are the recommended thing.

The only part of the book I skipped was the recipes, though if you are into cooking it would be a really awesome part to look through. It takes up significant space, so if you are looking for low carb recipes, the book might be worth the price just for that.

I loved the end of the book and wish that section had been included in the new one. It's Dr. Atkins' statement to the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition of Human Needs on April 12, 1973 (very early versions of the book do not include this). He does a wonderful job of defending his diet to the naysayers. I highly recommend reading this section of the book.

One last thing, the weight chart at the back of the book is not realistic in today's world. It's based on the old version of the Met Life charts. The new version allows people to weigh more, and I know my body just stalls out my weight loss at 145. On the old Met Life chart that was too much. On the new one it is a perfectly normal weight.

I recommend this book as a good history lesson in how the diet began, but to lose weight I recommend "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution," which has the advantage of 30 years' worth of learning that the doctor didn't have when he wrote the first book.

    5 out of 5 stars A nice approach..........2005-04-22

In the late 90's my weight ballooned to 205 pounds while I drank 1/2 a gallon of Coke a day.

The revelation that I was fat came when my students began calling me "Drew Carey" and my uncle called me butterball.

I started Atkins Thanksgiving 2000. By April 2001 my weight had gone from 205 to 165.

This diet, in conjunction with proper exercise, will probably enhance weightloss for many people, unlike any other apporach they have tried.

1 out of 5 stars About the book - not the diet.......2005-02-26

I'm assuming you're reading this because you want to know if this book is worth your money and time, and whether or not you should read it.

If this is not the case, you can skip the rest of this review, and read most of the others - which I have found to be largely testimonial, and will tell you what those reviewers think about the diet.

If you want to know something about the book: read on.

Firstly, I had a very difficult time reading this book - in fact, I skipped most of it, because a very large portion of the book is made up of extended testimonial-like cases. This made the book feel like marketing - and even if you're not as suspicious of marketing as I am, it wears on your nerves quite quickly if you approach the book wanting to learn something about the diet. Additionally, Mr. Atkins' tone made it sound like the diet was a religion or a cult. This made me want to try it even less.

Secondly, Mr. Atkins also seems to be encouraging a sedentary lifestyle. In the portion of the book that I read, he never once mentioned physical activity of any sort other than eating. This turned me off, as I believe that one of the major sources of obesity, especially in highly "industrialized" countries, is lack of physical activity. In short, he does not promote a balanced lifestyle any more than a balanced diet.

Thirdly, Mr. Atkins makes several factual and logical errors. He mentions our ancient hunter ancestors, but fails to mention that they were also gatherers: fruits, roots, nuts, seeds, honey ... all with lots of carbs. And people 200 years ago may have consumed much less sugar than we do now, but he doesn't think that perhaps they weren't obese because of their diet, but because of the amount of physical activity demanded of the large majority of the population just to stay alive.

Fourthly and finally, the book gave me no information I could not have found on the internet.

To sum up, is the book worth your time and money? You be the judge, but for me, it wasn't; I can recommend neither the book nor the diet.

5 out of 5 stars The Man Should Be Canonized!!!.......2003-11-05

I have been through everything.... low fat, Optifast, cabbage soup, the Dean Ornish plan, and I can say unequivocally, that Dr. Atkins' diet is the only one that has given me such dramatic results, with a minimum of pain and suffering.

I started Atkins about two months ago, weighing a huge amount (I'll never tell how much, but it was serious). I have stayed on induction for the past two months, pretty much without falling off. It's not that I have such great will power...I don't. But I really have absolutely no craving for carbohydrates or sweets, this from a convinced dessertophile. The net result is that in two months, I've shed about 34 lbs and gone down four pant sizes. My goal weight is still far off, but I feel better than I have in years.

For Atkins to work, you have to be pretty religious about it I think. I have not found induction at all restrictive, except that I do miss fruit, especially apples. I also have found that exercise is not an option with this diet...it's essential, as the Dr. claims. The combination is more effective than diet or exercise is alone. Between the two, the health benefits of this lifestyle have been enormous. I had a blood workup done about 6 weeks into the program and it was excellent. My cholesterol was down fewer than 200 for the first time in 12 years, my heart rate was a healthy 72, and my cardio health was excellent.

There are things to watch out for on this diet. The water-drinking requirement should not be taken lightly. It flushes out the kidneys, which is pretty important in a low carb diet. Also, forcing yourself not to cheat is also pretty important. The yoyo effect of a dessert on the weekend can be pretty tough...it's as if you are starting and stopping a diet over and over again and that's tough on your body. Supplements should be taken, especially vitamin D and C since the induction phase is particularly light in these vitamins. A fiber drink is essential for maintaining good bowel health. But if you can follow all of this, the plan is not too hard, nor is it too extreme...Dean Ornish...now THAT'S extreme! (I had good results on that as well, but it was too extreme for me to follow forever.)

One note about the food...the recipes in the book and on the Atkins website are excellent, truly gourmet. And there's a nice blend of fast meals and fancier meals. The desserts though are disappointing. I find that it's better for me just to avoid dessert altogether than to try a low carb substitute. There's still enough delicious food without the need for sweets, and if I get even a little hankering for something sweet, there's always sugar free jello. All in all, this has been, for me, an almost painless diet and one that I highly recommend people consider, with advice of course from a medical professional.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST LOW CARB COOKBOOK, IN FACT, MY FAVORITE COOKBOOK-BRAVO!!!.......2007-09-25

This book is my VERY FAVORITE COOKBOOK and I would love it even if I were not doing the Atkins diet! I have tried many of the recipes and the flavor now in my meals when I use this cookbook is so so so outstanding. Here are the best features in this LOW CARB COOKBOOK:
    1) Recipes are divided into Meats, Veggies, etc and using the table of contents, so easy to find.
    2) BEST FEATURE: The recipes give you the CARBS and PROTIEN. This is one of the features that sold me on this book.
    3) It shows you on each recipe what phase it is good for. For example, when I started phase one the induction, I was able to find enough recipes that would work in this phase and all were very low carbs.
    4) Each recipe that I have tried has tasted so wonderful, I forget that I am on the Atkins Diet - instead feel so wonderful and really enjoy each meal!
This is a PERFECT companion to the Atkins Diet Revolution Book! I highly recommend this book. Because I have followed the recipes in this book to the letter, I have lost 28 pounds in a short time and just have 12 more pounds to go and I am losing the weight I desire to each week! And I am still in the induction phase, but will move on to phase 2 very soon thanks to the help that this superb cookbook has given to me.

5 out of 5 stars Updated Carb counts and Phase indications.......2007-01-13

I like this new version. It tells which Phase the recipe would be appropriate for at the bottom. Atkin's cookbook recipes always work!

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.......2006-02-20

This book is a rip off. It gives recipes for foods that are already low in carbohydrates, and tells you very little about how to use alternative ingredients to make low carb dishes out of foods that would otherwise be high carb. The worst thing about the book is that the low carb ingredients recommended are all made by the Atkins company. Atkins emerged from bankruptcy in February of '06 with a new product line of 60 shakes and bars, and dropped the other 280 products they sold. Most of the recipes in this book are based on products that are no longer made or sold. It is, of course, possible to find or create other recipes. But to do that, you wouldn't need this book.

5 out of 5 stars This is what Atkins dieters have been looking for!.......2004-08-21

Easy-read, simple recipes. Short ingredient lists. A cookbook that's clearly organized into short chapters according to meat type. This is what I should have had when I started the Atkins' Diet last year.

Unlike its predecessor, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Cookbook, this Quick & Easy Diet Cookbook is very handy. It's just the thing after a long day when you don't want to get into an elaborate cooking session. I can pull some meat out of the fridge and look up a recipe; chances are, I will have everything I need stocked in my low-carb pantry and fridge. Most of the main dish recipes take under one half hour to prep and finish, and the ones I've tried are all taste-satisfying winners.

There is a beginning chapter that explains how to trim the carb content down if you're in the early Induction phase of the diet. Mostly, though, the meals are all low-carb enough for the Ongoing Weight Loss and Maintenance phases. I think dieters who are into other low carb diets will find it useful, too. There is no guesswork about how many carbs per serving when you measure your ingredients correctly and consult the carb, calorie, etc. counts at the bottom of the page.

Finally, I want to thank the team that finished this book after the Doctor's tragic accident last year. It's great that his "estate" is carrying on his good work to help this country and many more around the world learn how to get healthy and stay that way. Thank you all, and may God bless.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR THOSE ON ATKINS OR OTHER LOW CARB DIETS!.......2004-01-22

I've been following the Atkins diet for a short time and decided to buy this to save time preparing meals. This is just a great help in following the Atkins way of eating. The recipes truly are "quick and easy" and delicious. Another plus is that the book isn't overmelmingly long (not one of those "1,000 mouth watering recipes")! There are several recipes for each section (ie; beef, poultry, appetizers, seafood, desserts, etc.) - just enough to give you varied menu ideas but not overwelm you with decisions.
This is good eating even for those who are not dieting.

5 out of 5 stars This book is still the best one out there...........2006-03-29

I am a professional who has been reading and studying the field of supplements. This book is the best that I have come across. Not only is it the most complete, but the supplements in it were used in Dr. Atkin's clinical practice. This is were the rubber hits the road, and the concrete real life information that gives this book credibility. If I were to buy only one book on this subject, it would be this one, even over the encycolpedia type books.

5 out of 5 stars Helped my allegies and asthma.......2005-01-28

Because of my allergies and asthma, I was on Zyrtec, Advair, and had to carry an albuterol inhaler everywhere I went. I did the diet some years ago and it worked well. After seeing this book somewhere I decided to give it a try.

After reading this book I thought he Dr. Atikin's lost it this time. There are a lot of vitamins he wants you to take. Plus he started selling his own line of vitamins so I thought "ahhh, that's why." I talked to my doctor about it and he said it wouldn't work, you would just be wasting money because your body will piss it all away (literally). I was spending $150 on medications, the vitamins were about $20, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Well, I tried it, and it worked. I felt a lot better, and I didn't need to take the medications anymore.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy only one book on supplements.......2004-04-15

This is an excellent reference book on nutritional supplements. Far superior to any I have ever read. Page for page, you get relevant, researched information.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but disregard the conspiracy theory.......2003-06-11

This book has useful and helpful information about vitamins, minerals, amino acids and their role in the body. I couldn't be happier with the technical part, very well documented. However, a big con of this book is Dr. Atkins' huge ego and conspiracy theories. He almost claims that he started the vitamin hype and the nutrition-based approach to medicine. We know this is not true. Many others deserve so much more credit. Also, he goes down a path of silly and unfounded arguments about how the government is evil and doesn't want to raise the RDA of certain nutrients. This is silly. The RDA should be as low as it can be. Otherwise food manufacturers would be adding tons of unnecessary vitamins to food, more than the bare minimum to just prevent diseases. People would feel compelled to take mega doses of vitamins without proper information about them. It's up to us to raise our intake if we want to. RDA is not supposed to be the optimum amount for everyone, just the minimum to prevent simple deficiencies that could cause diseases. Also, he uses intricate reasoning to arrive at conclusions that vitamins are not more widespread because food manufacturers lobby against them. One could argue the opposite, that vitamins are becoming widespread because their manufacturers are lobbying for people to accept them. There's always a silly conspiracy theory for any subject. Dr. Atkins chose an absurd one and he stuck to it throughout his book. I suggest the reader takes his non-medical opinions (politics, RDA, etc) with a grain of salt. But not too much salt, because sodium is bad for you :-) Otherwise, the book is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!.......2003-01-11

This information on nutrition, like in all of Dr. Atkins' books, is well researched and well written. It's easy to understand and enables the reader to identify a condition then follow the instructions to alleviate it.

We all know now that Atkins has been on the right track all along, but I had no idea how much of a role nutrition played until I took advantage of the research and resolved a long standing debilitating physical problem of my own.

    Thank you Dr. Atkins!

4 out of 5 stars This is a good purchase if on the diet.......2004-04-20

If you are on the Atkins diet or your own version of it you should pick up this book. It is very helpful and the recipes are pretty good. Since I am not much of a cook I did not try most of the recipes but the ones I tried were all decent (some better than others). I do think a book like this helps you stay on the diet longer.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to accomplish, and proven to work!.......2004-01-10

Unlike fad diets and abstinence, this is a diet that does not require you to carry a scale, or a calculator to figure out if the food in front of you is what you should be eating. True, it helps if you love meat, but I have not met a fat vegetarian, so they should have nothing to worry about. The thought of being able to eat as much of the meat, and eggs that I want is heaven on earth. I no longer munch on pork rinds and feel guilty, but they are actually part of the diet.

There is, however, a misconception that the diet eliminates carbohydrates. This is specifically not the case. The diet allows a severe lowering of carbs, but the allowed total increases somewhat after a short period of time. I have not stopped eating at McDonalds, and other such places, but now I know that instead of a couple of quarter pound burgers, I can get a double burger and stay at my daily carb limit. Once you are at the limit for the day, then you stop the carbs for only that day. Therefore, I can also eat rice, bread, and pasta, but in limited servings. This is not always easy, but I lost 18 pounds within eight weeks.

I have not been as loyal to the diet since that loss, but I remain conscious about carbohydrates and this has kept me from regaining the weight after the last several months. The point is to know what will put on the weight and keep control. My wife and I add our own spices to the book's recipes so as to juice up the meals and to meet our taste needs. I do miss the big plate of spaghetti, but now I can better keep up with my children in play.

    3 out of 5 stars Usability.......2004-01-07

I just purchased the Atkins' New Diet Cookbook and have perused it briefly. However, without having started using the recipes, I have some suggestions to the author as to how to improve the usability.
    1. All recipes should be for the same number of servings. It is easy to double or triple for more servings.
    2. The page number should be included (rather than an asterisk indicating that the recipe is in the back of the book). I spent several hours locating the recipe and writing the page number by the meal plan. This before I even started considering cooking!
    3. Little effort was made to make the recipes cost effective. By that I mean, in the first two weeks, many ingredients are perishable but used only one time and small amounts required--such as 4 strawberries!
    5. Too much effort to make recipes exotic when more normal and available (also less expensive)ingredients would make the diet easier to manage and still maintain the low carbs.

5 out of 5 stars Lose Weight With Low Carbs - Delicious Tempting Recipes.......2003-10-27

In a motivated mood, I asked my doctor recently to give me a good diet plan so I could take off many unwanted pounds. He didn't skip a beat. He just said "try the Atkins' Diet." So, I did...and it is excellent! What a great way to lose weight, in a healthy manner, with a minimal amount of suffering. I am dropping pounds, not feeling hungry, and ready to experiment with low carbohydrate food recipes, as I have grown a little bored with broiled meats, fish, omelettes and plain salad.

I picked up a copy of "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Cookbook: With Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter," tried many of the recipes and have been thrilled with the gourmet results. All recipes follow the same high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet (including the complex carbohydrates). From appetizers, meat, poultry and fish dishes, to scrumptious desserts, the results are wonderful. The cheesecake is loaded with cream cheese, eggs, cream fraiche, uses a sugar substitute and is out of this world. My diet is much more varied now and food actually seems to taste better than before I began the diet. The carbohydrate counter included in the book is invaluable.

I also want to add that exercise is so important in the weight loss process. Even walking for a half hour everyday will help considerably. Dr. Atkins was scorned for many years for his weight loss program and healthy diet theories, but over time, with much research, he has been proven correct. I can't recommend his diet and this cookbook highly enough! Check with your doctor first, as I did. Good luck!

    1 out of 5 stars not healthy.......2007-03-08

Did not like the diet because i was having alot of stomach problems and was getting very dizzy at times. I now do the weight watchers diet and love it.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Atkins and God Bless You!.......2006-06-08

What can I add to all the glorious reviews below and above this one? Here's a man that was frowned upon for many years because he dared to oppose his peers. Unfortunately his diet was only officially recognized after death and as a result several similar diets have sprung up since, taking advantage and credit of his lifetime's work.

My husband and I started this diet almost 4 months ago and I have lost over 25 pounds and my husband has lost 23 (and all this without exercising which Dr. Atkins highly recommends and we intend to follow soon). I did my research on the diet and the man, and we decided to give it a try. It has worked all the way, as we were committed to loosing this weight (and still going strong). I have always been slim, working hard at it since I suffer from hypothyroidism, but gained a lot of weight during a miscarriage (stress and disappointment) and then a pregnancy 5 months later. The total weight gained was 78 pounds from which I had only managed to loose 37 pounds (through various diets) by the time my son was 28 months.
    .
Now I will fully admit that this diet is not for everyone, just like giving up smoking is not for everyone when you are not committed to the cause. I assure you if you do what you have to do and READ THE BOOK COVER TO COVER it will work for you. Dr. Atkins stresses how you should be taking multivitamins and also for example magnesium or potassium in our case, since we feel fatigued sometimes given the fact that we have stuck with Induction all this time to loose weight more rapidly. If you read the entire book you will see that Dr. Atkins gives solutions to any problems that may occur while on the diet, like for example how yeast can prevent some people from loosing weight (which as I found out was also my case). I followed his advice and started loosing weight once again.

This is a book that you need to refer to again and again to ensure that you are doing the right thing and following the diet correctly. It's for people that are serious about loosing weight. But then again, we didn't gain the weight overnight; who said it would be easy loosing it?

When we ordered this book we also ordered one of his recipe books "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Cookbook" and we have used some of the recipes, which were very tasty and most important they did not need much prep time. I will admit, since we have only used a few recipes I would not be honest enough if I said they were all great, but give them a try and decide for yourself.

Also, I would like to add that Dr. Atkins did not just give my husband and I a new diet. He gave us a way of life, as we fully intend to go through the other phases (after loosing all the weight we want to loose), and staying with the maintenance from there on.

Last but not least I would like to say THANK YOU DR. ATKINS AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU IN SPIRIT!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Best Weight Loss System!.......2004-12-15

I lost at least 30 lbs and kept it off! This diet has been around awhile. I knew it worked as had tried it many years ago. I like the "new" addition of a salad a day. This is a high protein, very low carbohydrate diet. I have felt good on this diet. The day I ate macaroni and cheese, I felt bloated and fat, not slim as on the other days. I am loosing weight, even with "slips" and my regular sweet coffee. "Caffeine stimulates an overproduction of insulin, which ultimately promotes weight gain. The biggest need is to stop a caffeine addiction. Once you go 2 weeks without caffeine, you may have it again as long as you don't become dependent on it for energy." I do not need coffee for energy. I just like the taste! Since muscle weighs more than fat, and I'm walking vigorously (at least 20 minutes every day on days that are not too cold or rainy), less weight loss is normal.

5 out of 5 stars Less carbs - better way to eat.......2004-06-04

On the induction phase of this diet plan I lost 10 lbs in one week, and it was easier than ever (and I've been on every diet). I continue to use what I learned in this book and I now weigh the lowest I've weighed in 7 and a half years!

The erroneous reports of him weighing 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death.

As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system (see below). The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book!
